Abstract:IntroductionPrimary thyroid leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare soft tissue sarcoma, characterized by high malignancy and poor prognosis. Currently, only 13 cases of primary thyroid leiomyosarcoma have been described in the medical literature (limited to English).Case presentationA 76-year-old female presented with a giant neck mass. Physical examination revealed a large, firm mass in the left thyroid gland. No symptoms such as hoarseness or dysphagia were noted at the time of presentation. The patient underwent unilateral thyroidectomy and cervical lymph node dissection.Clinical discussionPathologic findings revealed a low-grade sarcoma with spindle-shaped tumor cells in an interwoven, sheet-like distribution. Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for desmin, SMMHC, STAT6, CK19, and Galectin3, but negativity for S-100, MyoD1, CD34, CK (AE1/AE3), CD117, and CD56. The findings were consistent with thyroid leiomyosarcoma.ConclusionThe treatment of primary thyroid LMS presents challenges due to its atypical symptoms and high malignance, highlighting the imperative for further exploration of therapeutic strategies to improve the outcomes.
A Primary Myeloid Sarcoma Involving the Small Intestine and Mesentery: Case Report and Literature Review.

Abstract:Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare, extramedullary hematological malignant tumor. MS, which is shown to precede acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and in which bone marrow aspiration or biopsy finds no hematological disorder, is classified as primary or isolated MS. Primary MS with no evidence of the cancer in the blood is rare. Herein, we report a case of a primary MS involved the small intestine and mesentery. A 40-year-old man with intermittent upper vague abdominal pain for 1 month was admitted to the hospital on October 20th, 2017. The pain was obviously aggravated after food ingestion, but he had no nausea or vomiting. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed a soft tissue density mass in the mesenteric region and a wall thickening of the jejunum. Positron emission tomography (PET)-CT imaging with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) showed a significant uptake inmesenteric regional mass (7.6 cm × 4.1 cm) and jejunum wall. The patient underwent a laparotomy, and the involved part of the small intestine along with the mesentery was resected. Histological examination and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining determined the pathological diagnosis was MS. Clinical laboratory tests and a bone marrow biopsy were used to rule out systemic AML. The patient had been treated with a combination of pirarubicin and cytarabine. A follow-up CT scan and necessary clinical laboratory tests were performed after the surgery and no abnormalities were found. To date, the patient continues to be in complete remission. In conclusion, primary MS is a rare disease, yet the diagnosis of MS should be considered when any mass with diffusely infiltrating tumor cells is observed.
A new approach in restorative treatment of external root resorption. A case report.

Abstract:This case report describes the treatment of an external root resorption with extensive loss of tooth structure and bone at the labial surface of an upper left central incisor. The area of bone loss and root resorption was surgically exposed and an impression was taken using curing silicone. An individual ceramic insert was fabricated, allowing endodontic retreatment through an artificial root canal. The insert was incorporated using a dentin bonding system and a dual curing luting composite. Following endodontic retreatment and internal bleaching, a ceramic veneer was bonded to the tooth to obtain good esthetics and to improve stability. Twenty months after surgical treatment no further root resorption could be detected radiographically. A shallow residual pocket but no bleeding on probing was found.
A rare case of small bowel leiomyosarcoma presenting with acute gastro-intestinal bleeding

Abstract:A 62-year-old Turkish female was admitted to our hospital with acute, progressive melena. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy could not reveal the cause of the melena. Subsequent CT angiography demonstrated a large, exophytic mass in the ileocecal junction as a source of the haemorrhage, leading to urgent laparotomy and resection. Histopathology revealed a low grade leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and confirmatory immunological staining. Primary LMS of the small bowel is an extremely rare gastrointestinal (GI) malignancy. Presentation with acute GI bleeding is even more exceptional, since LMS is a mainly intramural, exophytic tumour of the bowel wall. Immunohistochemistry plays a crucial role in differentiating LMS from GI stromal tumour. The work up of occult small bowel neoplasms currently consists of MRI enterography or enteroclysis and wireless capsule endoscopy. Treatment is surgical resection. This case highlights the non-specific imaging features of ileal LMS and highlights the management of acute GI bleed.
Primary breast myeloid sarcoma: A case report and literature review

Abstract:Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary tumor originating from immature bone marrow cells. MS of the breast is an extremely uncommon disease with non‐specific clinical and radiological features. The present case report describes a distinctive case of MS of the breast, which posed diagnostic challenges due to the absence of typical imaging characteristics at the time of presentation. The patient was a 58‐year‐old woman who presented with a breast mass. Further examination and testing confirmed the diagnosis of MS in the right breast, with metastases to the right iliac, pubic and ischial regions. Immunohistochemical analysis identified metastatic tumors distinguished by the expression of a number of markers, including Ki‐67, myeloperoxidase and cluster of differentiation 43. The patient underwent six cycles of chemotherapy with a regimen comprising etoposide, methylprednisolone, cytarabine and cisplatin, and 28 cycles (56 cGy each) of consolidation radiotherapy. Extensive examination and long‐term follow‐up revealed no further tumor recurrence or metastasis. Myeloid sarcomas of the breast typically manifest as palpable masses requiring diagnostic imaging. However, due to the rarity of MS of the breast without any signs of leukemia, its diagnosis and treatment are challenging. The present case report highlights the importance of maintaining high clinical, radiological and pathological standards when diagnosing this disease. Additionally, a comprehensive review of the literature on breast MS is provided. This highlights the necessity for clinicians to consider this rare diagnosis in patients presenting with a breast mass, to facilitate the appropriate treatment and prevent unnecessary procedures such as mastectomies.

Abstract:Rationale: Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the small intestine is an exceedingly rare and aggressive malignancy, often diagnosed at advanced stages with a poor prognosis. This study documents a detailed case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the small intestine, highlighting the diagnostic challenges and treatment approaches, underscored by a comprehensive review of related literature. Given the rarity of this condition, our report aims to enrich the existing diagnostic and treatment frameworks for this malignancy, emphasizing the necessity for early detection and intervention strategies. By presenting this case in conjunction with a literature review, we seek to shed light on the elusive nature of sarcomatoid carcinoma in the small intestine and propose avenues for improving patient outcomes. Patient concerns: Case presentation A 61-year-old male patient initially presented with recurrent abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms. Initial abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans and gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed only inflammatory and hyperplastic changes in the duodenum and jejunum, with a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction. Two years later, due to gastrointestinal perforation, the patient was hospitalized again. Diagnoses: CT scans and other examinations revealed small intestinal lesions. Four small intestinal lesions were surgically removed, and pathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed sarcomatoid carcinoma of the small intestine. A short time later, enhanced CT scans revealed metastatic lesions in the hepatic portal and adrenal glands. Interventions: After surgery, the gastrointestinal function gradually recovered, and the patient was discharged from the hospital on a semiliquid diet. No further treatment such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy was administered postoperatively. Outcomes: Five months after the surgery, the patient died due to brain metastasis. Lessons: The study outcomes reveal the aggressive nature of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the small intestine, characterized by rapid progression and poor prognosis despite surgical interventions. The patient condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to metastasis and death within 5 months postsurgery. These findings underscore the critical need for early detection and possibly innovative treatment approaches to improve survival rates. This case also highlights the potential for gastrointestinal sarcomatoid carcinoma to metastasize to distant organs, including the brain, suggesting a propensity for hematogenous spread.

Abstract:Journal of International Medical Research, Volume 52, Issue 9, September 2024. Primary ovarian sarcoma is a rare malignancy, with primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma being even rarer because of the lack of smooth muscle in the ovaries. We herein report a case of primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma in a woman in her late 50s who presented with a 6-month history of abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a pelvic mass. The patient underwent surgery and was diagnosed with ovarian leiomyosarcoma. One month postoperatively, she began gemcitabine and docetaxel chemotherapy and continued this treatment for 6 months. Eight months postoperatively, however, recurrence was detected in the pelvic cavity. This case is reported with the aim of raising awareness about this rare disease.

Abstract:The incidence of leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is about 4–5/100,000 individuals per year. LMSs occurring in the small bowel are even rarer, and their preoperative diagnosis is very difficult. We described two patients with pathologically confirmed small bowel LMS and analyzed their clinical and medical imaging features. Similar cases reported in English in Pubmed database over the past decade were reviewed and summarized. These tumors were categorized by the growth direction and relationship with the intestinal lumen into three types: intraluminal (n = 10), intermural (n = 3), and extraluminal (n = 7). Notably, among the three types of LMS, the intramural leiomyosarcoma stands out as a noteworthy subtype. Emerging evidence suggests that smaller tumor size (< 5 cm) and the intraluminal type may serve as favorable prognostic indicators, while the extraluminal type is associated with relatively poor prognosis. Furthermore, the integration of imaging features with CA125 and LDH biomarkers holds promise for potential diagnostic value in LMS.

Abstract:Abstract Abstract 4377 Background: Myeloid Sarcoma (MS) is a rare neoplasm composed of immature myeloid cells occurring in any extramedullary organ most commonly in the skin, bone and lymph node. It may develop independently or concurrently with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myeloproliferative disorder (MPD) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Some reports have described MS while most of them were one case report. In this study we retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics, treatment approaches and prognosis of 18 MS patients in our single center. Methods: between January 2003 and March 2010, eighteen MS patients were included in this study. The diagnosis depends on histological features and immunohistochemical results. All pathology specimens were routinely processed and examined by morphology. Immunohistochemical stains were performed on paraffin-embedded sections with monoclonal antibodies including MPO, CD3, CD20, CD79a, CD45, CD34, CD117, CD43. At the same time bone marrow aspiration were routinely examined. Disease morphology was determined according to the French-American – British(FAB) classification. After patients had comfirmed diagnosis with MS, they received cytarabine plus idarubicin or homoharringtonine for induction and consolidation chemotherapy. All the statistical analyses were performed using Kaplan-Meier. Results: among the 18 patients, the proportion of male and female was 1:1. Median age at diagnosis was 31.5 years (range 18–67). The usual involvement sites were skin (25%), lymph node (20%), breast (15%), uterus and cervix (15%). In total ten of the eighteen patients (55.6%) preceded AML without abnormality in peripheral blood and bone marrow while five patients concurrently developed AML-M2 and three (22.2%) were initially misdiagnosed as two were mistaken for Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and the other for myeloma. In total 14 of 18 patients were examined by immunohistochemistry. The positive rate of MPO was 92.9% and other myeloid related markers were also strongly positive whereas lymphoid related markers were negative which were accord with biologic properties of myeloid cells. All the patients received chemotherapy. 10 patients without bone marrow involvement achieved complete disappearance of MS. Of these, 5 (50%) patients still kept complete remission after 1 year, 3 progressed to AML after six, eight and sixty-two months respectively; 2 died after two months after definite diagnoses of AML. As for the 6 patients with bone-marrow involvement undgone chemotherapy, 5 (83.3%) achieved complete bone-marrow remission but 3 of them relapsed at the points of seven,eleven and eighteen months, respectively. 4-year EFS and OS were longer in non-leukemic MS patients than in MS cases with bone-marrow involvement using Kaplan-Meier analyses. Conclusion: this study showed myeloid sarcoma could develop in various kinds of populations with easy misdiagnosis. Non-leukemic MS should be the beginning stage of AML. It is necessary to treat patients who have non-leukemic MS by classic chemical therapy for AML as early as possible. As such a study is limited by relatively small sample size, more clinical prospective trials in multiple centers should be carried out worldwide. Primary Colonic Melanoma Presenting As Ileocecal Intussusception: Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract:Primary malignant melanoma originating in the colon is an extremely rare disease. Herein, we report a case of primary melanoma of the ascending colon. The patient was a 57-year-old male who was admitted to our hospital for persistent abdominal pain and episodes of bloody stool, nausea and vomiting. A computed tomography scan revealed lower intestinal intussusception and enlarged lymph nodes in the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum. During laparoscopic operation, multiple enlarged lymph nodes were found. Several segments of the proximal small intestine were incarcerated into the distal small intestine, forming an internal hernia and obstruction. The necrotic terminal ileum was invaginated into the ascending cecum. Subsequently, adhesive internal hernia reduction and palliative right hemicolectomy were performed. Pathologic examination of the excised specimen revealed a polypoid mass in the ascending colon. Histological examination showed epithelioid and spindle tumor cells with obvious cytoplasmic melanin deposition. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that the tumor cells were positive for S-100, HMB-45 and vimentin, confirming the diagnosis of melanoma. The patient history and a thorough postoperative investigation excluded the preexistence or coexistence of a primary lesion elsewhere in the skin, anus or oculus or at other sites. Thus, we consider our case to represent an aggressive primary colon melanoma presenting as ileocecal intussusception and intestinal obstruction.
Laparoscopic resection of a metastatic myxoid liposarcoma in the mesentery of the small intestine: a case report

Abstract:Abstract Background Myxoid liposarcoma (MLS), with its risk factors, tends to spread to the lungs and extraperitoneally, with intraperitoneal metastases occurring rarely. We present an unusual case of a myxoid liposarcoma that metastasized to the abdominal organs. Case presentation A 60-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for the evaluation of a right upper limb tumor that had been growing for 7 years. The patient refused surgery, and during follow-up, tumor hemorrhage resulted in hemorrhagic shock. The patient’s right upper limb was immediately amputated. MLS was diagnosed histopathologically. Subsequently, the patient underwent adjuvant chemotherapy. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a right buttock mass, a pelvic mass, and left cardiophrenic angle lymph nodes 3 years after the initial surgery. Contrast-enhanced abdominal CT revealed a relatively low-density, lobulated pelvic tumor. Contrast-enhanced pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a low-intensity, lobulated mass on T1-weighted images and a high-intensity mass on T2-weighted images. The pelvic mass showed no significant fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography (PET)-CT. On clinical examination, gynecological malignancies were ruled out as the origin of the pelvic lesions. After resection of the right buttock mass, pelvic mass, and left cardiophrenic angle lymph nodes, the patient underwent laparoscopic surgery for a preoperative diagnosis of small intestinal mesenteric metastasis of MLS. A tumor was found in the mesentery of the small intestine and removed with a margin of 5 cm on both the proximal and distal sides. The specimen measured 10 × 8 × 5 cm and contained a multifocal mass. The tumor was found in the mesentery of the small intestine, with no mucosal or submucosal invasion. The patient was diagnosed with MLS with small mesenteric intestinal metastases. On postoperative day 8, the patient was discharged after an uneventful postoperative course. Twelve months after the surgery, there was no evidence of local or distant recurrence. Conclusions Small intestinal mesenteric metastases of MLSs are rare. Moreover, there are few reports on laparoscopic resection. In this case, the laparoscopic approach was useful in detecting the tumor location and determining the range of resection.
Acute Small Bowel Obstruction: a Rare Initial Presentation for the Metastasis of the Large-Cell Carcinoma of the Lung.

Abstract:We present one case with symptom of paroxysmal abdominal pain for over 20 days. Abdominal computerized tomography (CT) scan revealed intestinal obstruction and a mass of 6.0 cm × 6.0 cm in size located at the left adrenal. Chest CT scan showed a lobulated mass of 2.7 cm × 2.7 cm in size at the upper left lung. Core needle biopsy of the lung mass confirmed the diagnosis of large cell carcinoma. The patient underwent an emergency abdominal laparotomy and received a chemotherapy regimen that consisted of pemetrexed and cisplatin postoperatively. In addition, we made a review of the literature of the occurrence, diagnosis and outcome of this manifestation.
Case Report: Colon malignant tumor caused by retroperitoneal small round cell undifferentiated sarcoma

Abstract:Small round cell undifferentiated sarcoma is a rare and highly invasive group of malignant bone and soft tissue tumors, often associated with a high misdiagnosis rate. The patient in this case was a 34-year-old male who presented with a two-month history of abdominal pain that worsened over the past two weeks. Elevated levels of tumor markers CA19-9 and CA72-4 were observed. Imaging revealed a substantial, well-vascularized mass in the lower left abdomen, located in the posterior abdominal cavity, invading the descending colon and the root of the small mesentery, and infiltrating the serous layer. The lesion was extensively resected without any postoperative complications. Microscopic examination indicated a combination of mucinous adenocarcinoma (approximately 30%) and small round cell undifferentiated sarcoma (approximately 70%). The patient was followed up for six months, and one month after surgery, a recurrence of the tumor was observed in the left paracolonic sulcus area, with metastases to the abdominal wall, peritoneum, and medial iliac muscles. Chemotherapy and targeted therapy were administered, and the patient currently survives with the presence of tumors. Small round cell undifferentiated sarcoma is an uncommon and highly invasive tumor, and clinical surgeons need to raise their awareness and realize to the maximum extent possible that this disease can be described through a multi-modal combination of immunohistochemistry and genetic test to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce missed diagnoses. Further research in the field of biology is necessary to explore targeted drugs specifically suitable for this disease.
Incomplete Intestinal Obstruction Caused by a Rare Epithelioid Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Sarcoma of the Colon: A Case Report.

Abstract:We reported on 1 case of epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma (EIMS) that occurred in the colon and resulted in an incomplete intestinal obstruction.A 65-year-old male patient presented with abdominal pain without any obvious predisposing cause. He reported a paroxysmal dull pain. Hematochezia occurred occasionally. The symptoms appeared repeatedly and became progressively more aggravated. The patient sought medical advice in our hospital, and his enteroscopy showed colon tumors and an incomplete colonic obstruction. The laboratory examination indicated mild anemia. Plain and enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans showed a large, dumbbell-shaped, soft-tissue mass of 4.1 cm × 9.3 cm in the curved lumen of the descending colon near the spleen. After enhancement, the lesion presented with progressive and uneven enhancement. The boundary between the lesion and parts of the left kidney and spleen was obscured. A small amount of exudation was observed around the lumen, and a slightly enlarged lymph node shadow was observed in the mesangial gap.After each preoperative examination was completed, the tumors invading the spleen and left kidney were excised. Based on the surgical specimen pathological histology and immunohistochemistry, epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma was diagnosed. Tumor recurrence occurred a short time after excision.EIMS in the abdominal cavity could occur on the intestinal wall, occasionally manifesting as large masses that expand to the inside and the outside of the cavity. It needs to be distinguished from other tumors. Tumor recurrence can easily occur after surgery. Anaplasticlymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitors are a potential alternative treatment option.
Myeloid Sarcoma of the Colon Initially Presenting as a Paracolic Abscess in a Patient with Relapsed Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Abstract:Myeloid sarcoma, a rare extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), can occur in various anatomic sites but seldom involves the gastrointestinal tract. We report the unusual case of a 49-year-old man with a history of AML who initially presented with abdominal pain and imaging findings suggestive of a paracolic abscess. However, the lesion rapidly progressed to a large descending colon mass with peritoneal involvement over five weeks. Surgical resection and histopathological examination confirmed a diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma. This case highlights the potential of myeloid sarcoma to mimic an inflammatory colonic process at initial presentation prior to manifesting as an overt mass lesion. Although exceedingly rare, myeloid sarcoma should be considered in patients with a history of AML presenting with colon lesions, particularly in those with an aggressive clinical course. Early recognition may expedite appropriate treatment and prevent unnecessary procedures. This report also underscores the importance of correlating imaging findings with clinical history and histopathology findings to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Myeloid Sarcoma Derived from the Gastrointestinal Tract: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract:Myeloid sarcoma is a type of malignant neoplasm composed of myeloblasts that locates extramedullary. The present study reports the case of a 31-year-old female who presented with upper abdominal pain, melena, vomiting and jaundice. The abdominal computed tomography revealed a mass in gastric antrum area and possible infiltration of the duodenum, gallbladder and head of the pancreas, with possible retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis. The tumor grew quickly and led to serious obstructive jaundice. New masses developed in the bilateral orbits and left breast within 2 months of admission. The pathological results of the gastroscopic biopsy and the fine-needle biopsy of the breast revealed myeloid sarcoma. Transhepatic cholangial drainage, radiotherapy and chemotherapy were administered, but the disease reoccurred and became resistant to chemotherapy, so salvage allogenetic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation was performed. The disease relapsed at 5 months posttransplantation, and chemotherapy and donor lymphocytes transfusions were then administered. The patient declined further treatment and succumbed to disease on May 19, 2015. The present study could improve the understanding of myeloid sarcoma and provide a reference for standardized and individualized treatments for this disease.
Huge intermediate-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma in the retroperitoneum revealed by 18F-FDG PET/CT: a case report

Abstract:Myofibroblastic sarcoma (MS) is a relatively rare malignant bone and soft tissue tumor, which originates from myofibroblasts, with some characteristics of both smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts. It can develop in individuals at any age and can affect various regions, especially the head and neck; however, it is rarely reported retroperitoneally. Generally, this type of sarcoma is considered a low-grade malignancy, and cases classified as moderate and high-grade malignancy are rare. In this study, we describe a case of intermediate-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (IGMS) originating from the retroperitoneum, which was confirmed through pathological diagnosis. The 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a large, borderless mass located retroperitoneally with a significantly increased 18 F-FDG uptake, accompanied by adjacent visceral and soft tissue infiltration and peripheral lymph node metastasis. The patient received chemotherapy for 3 weeks; however, the tumor did not shrink significantly. Therefore, the patient discontinued the treatment. After 5 months, his condition gradually deteriorated, which eventually led to death. Through this case report, the diagnosis and treatment of moderate malignant retroperitoneal myofibroblastoma were discussed, aiming to increase clinicians' understanding of this disease.

A rare multiple primary sarcomatoid carcinoma (SCA) of small intestine harboring driver gene mutations: a case report and a literature review

Abstract:Primary sarcomatoid carcinoma (SCA) is a type of rare tumor consisting of both malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Only 32 cases of SCA of the small bowel have been reported in the literature to date. Due to its rarity and complexity, this cancer has not been genetically studied and its diagnosis and treatment remain difficult. Here we report a 54-year-old male underwent emergency surgical resection in the small intestine due to severe obstruction and was diagnosed with multiple SCA based on postoperative pathological examination. Over 100 polypoid tumors scattered along his whole jejunum and proximal ileum. Chemotherapy (IFO+Epirubicin) was performed after surgery while the patient died two months after the surgery due to severe malnutrition. Whole-exome sequencing was performed for the tumor tissue with normal tissue as the control. Important cancer-related gene mutations, including KRAS (c.37G>T, p.G13C), TP53 (c.871A>T, p.K291*), EGFR (c.1351C>T, p.R451C), and CDKN2A (c.104_138del, p.G35fs), were found among 286 nonsynonymous somatic mutations (SNV and Indel). Copy-number amplified genes mainly gathered in chromosome 6, 7, 16 and 20. Mutation clustering analysis showed that main genetic abnormalities included DNA methylation, DNA alkylation, cellular homeostasis, and shared similarities with melanoma, glioma, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer. In summary, the genomic features of the small intestine SCA were explored at whole-exome level for the first time, and over 200 somatic mutations were identified in the tumor tissue. Key tumor driver gene mutations were revealed, as well as several aberrant functional pathways. These results contribute to further understanding of the pathogenesis and molecular mechanism of this rare tumor.
Case Report: Ileocecal Intussusception Secondary to a Metastatic Malignant Melanoma From the Scalp

Abstract:Adult intussusception is an unusual condition that is infrequently associated with malignancy. We experienced a rare occurrence of ileocecal intussusception in a 31-year-old male, secondary to metastatic melanoma. The patient, with a medical history of scalp malignant melanoma treated surgically and with chemotherapy, presented with persistent lower abdominal pain. Diagnostic modalities, including computed tomography (CT) and colonoscopy, revealed ileocecal intussusception. Subsequent laparoscopic surgery and pathological examination identified metastatic melanoma as the etiological factor for the intussusception, leading to the surgical resection of the involved bowel segment. The postoperative period was marked by a smooth recovery with no complications. This case shows the importance of considering malignancy in the differential diagnosis of adult intussusception and underscores the urgency of surgical intervention in the management of such cases.

Abstract:The effect of the constant illumination on the development of spontaneous tumors in female 129/Sv mice was investigated. Forty-six female 129/Sv mice starting from the age of 2 mo were kept under standard light/dark regimen [12 h light (70 lx):12hr dark; LD, control group], and 46 of 129/Sv mice were kept under constant illumination (24 h a day, 2,500 lx, LL) from the age of 5 mo until to natural death. The exposure to the LL regimen significantly accelerated body weight gain, increased body temperature as well as acceleration of age-related disturbances in estrous function, followed by significant acceleration of the development of the spontaneous uterine tumors in female 129/Sv mice. Total tumor incidence as well as a total number of total or malignant tumors was similar in LL and LD group (p > 0.05). The mice from the LL groups survived less than those from the LD group (χ2 = 8.5; p = 0.00351, log-rank test). According to the estimated parameters of the Cox’s regression model, constant light regimen increased the relative risk of death in female mice compared with the control (LD) group (p = 0.0041). The data demonstrate in the first time that the exposure to constant illumination was followed by the acceleration of aging and spontaneous uterine tumorigenesis in female 129/Sv mice.
