Abstract:Background: The Sustainable Development Goal Three has prioritised reducing maternal, under-5 and neonatal mortalities as core global health policy objectives. The place, where expectant mothers choose to deliver their babies has a direct effect on maternal health outcomes. In sub-Saharan Africa, existing literature has shown that some women attend antenatal care during pregnancy but choose to deliver their babies at home. Using the Andersen and Newman Behavioural Model, this study explored the institutional and socio-cultural factors motivating women to deliver at home after attending antenatal care. Methods: A qualitative, exploratory, cross-sectional design was deployed. Data were collected from a purposive sample of 23 women, who attended antenatal care during pregnancy but delivered their babies at home, 10 health workers and 17 other community-level stakeholders. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, which were audio-recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed. Results: In line with the Andersen and Newman Model, the study discovered that traditional and religious belief systems about marital fidelity and the role of the gods in childbirth, myths about consequences of facility-based delivery, illiteracy, and weak women's autonomy in healthcare decision-making, predisposed women to home delivery. Home delivery was also enabled by inadequate midwives at health facilities, the unfriendly attitude of health workers, hidden charges for facility-based delivery, and long distances to healthcare facilities. The fear of caesarean section, also created the need for women who attended antenatal care to deliver at home. Conclusion: The study has established that socio-cultural and institutional level factors influenced women's decisions to deliver at home. We recommend a general improvement in the service delivery capacity of health facilities, and the implementation of collaborative educational and women empowerment programmes by stakeholders, to strengthen women's autonomy and reshape existing traditional and religious beliefs facilitating home delivery.
Women's Choice to Deliver at Home: Understanding the Psychosocial and Cultural Factors Influencing Birthing Choices for Unskilled Home Delivery among Women in Southwestern Uganda

Abstract:Background: Utilization of perinatal services in Uganda remains low, with correspondingly high rates of unskilled home deliveries, which can be life-threatening. We explored psychosocial and cultural factors influencing birthing choices for unskilled home delivery among postpartum women in rural southwestern Uganda. Methods: We conducted in-depth qualitative face-to-face interviews with 30 purposively selected women between December 2018 and March 2019 to include adult women who delivered from their homes and health facility within the past three months. Women were recruited from 10 villages within 20 km from a referral hospital. Using the constructs of the Health Utilization Model (HUM), interview topics were developed. Interviews were conducted and digitally recorded in a private setting by a native speaker to elicit choices and experiences during pregnancy and childbirth. Translated transcripts were generated and coded. Coded data were iteratively reviewed and sorted to derive categories using inductive content analytic approach. Results: Eighteen women (60%) preferred to deliver from home. Women's referent birth location was largely intentional. Overall, the data suggest women choose home delivery (1) because of their financial dependency and expectation for a "natural" and normal childbirth, affecting their ability and need to seek skilled facility delivery; (2) as a means of controlling their own birth processes; (3) out of dissatisfaction with facility-based care; (4) out of strong belief in fate regarding birth outcomes; (5) because they have access to alternative sources of birthing help within their communities, perceived as "affordable," "supportive," and "convenient"; and (6) as a result of existing gender and traditional norms that limit their ability and freedom to make family or health decisions as women. Conclusion: Women's psychosocial and cultural understandings of pregnancy and child birth, their established traditions, birth expectations, and perceptions of control, need, and quality of maternity care at a particular birthing location influenced their past and future decisions to pursue home delivery. Interventions to address barriers to healthcare utilization through a multipronged approach could help to debunk misconceptions, increase perceived need, and motivate women to seek facility delivery.

Abstract:Becoming a mother should be an exciting experience in woman's life. No mother should have to endure adverse encounters. while seeking healthcare in any maternal services facility. this is a phenomenon occurring globally. Delivery of these maternal healthcare services has a bearing on the obstetrical outcomes of mothers from preconception until six weeks after delivery. The study aims to understand the experiences of perinatal women regarding maternal healthcare services in the public hospitals of Gauteng province in South Africa. This study followed an exploratory and descriptive qualitative approach using a purposive sampling method. The study was conducted in three selected public hospitals representing different levels of care namely, district, tertiary provincial, and academic in the Gauteng province. A total of forty-six perinatal women were selected to take part in six focus groups. Data were thematically analysed following the six steps given by Braun and Clarke (2013). Three themes emerged as follows: 1) individual 2) interpersonal reasons and 3) impact of poor complaints procedure on maternal healthcare. The study showed that maternity services rendered to perinatal women in the three selected public hospitals are affected by several factors, such as midwives' attitudes, knowledge and skills, professional ethics, communication, and delayed maternal healthcare. These findings demonstrate an urgent need for practice and policy interventions that go beyond just a routine service but quality and organised maternal healthcare services provided in public hospitals, for improved healthcare outcomes at the point of service.

Abstract:IntroductionMaternal delivery at home without skilled care at birth is a major public health issue. The current study aimed to assess the various contributing and eliminating factors of maternal delivery at home in India. The reasons for not delivering at healthcare facilities were also explored.MethodsThe study used the National Family Health Surveys (NFHS)-4 (2015–2016) data from states and union territories of India for analysis. A national representative sample of 699,686 women of reproductive age group (15–49 years) was used. Cross-tabulation and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed.ResultsThe prevalence of home delivery in India was 22%, among which 34% of women believed that institutional delivery was not a necessity. Financial constraints, lack of proper transportation facilities, non-accessibility of healthcare institutions and not getting permission from family members were the main reasons cited by the women for delivering at home. The proportion of home deliveries was much higher among women from more disadvantaged socioeconomic areas than women from less disadvantaged socioeconomic areas. Domestic violence and partner control were essential factors contributing to the prevalence of home delivery. However, the women who owned mobile phones and used a short message service (SMS) facility delivered at home less often.ConclusionPolicymakers should focus more on the women living in disadvantaged socioeconomic areas and other marginalised populations with less education and low economic levels to provide them with optimum delivery care utilisation. Strengthening of public healthcare facilities and more effective use of skilled birth attendents and their networking are essential steps. Electronic and economic empowerment of women should be emphasised to bring about a significant reduction in the proportion of home deliveries in India.

Abstract:Introduction: Most new-born babies are born at home in rural communities which is not new phenomenon due to lack of access to primary healthcare services and trained skilled health attendants, exposing mothers and children to a high risk of labour complications. The purpose of this study was to better understand factors influence rural women's access to primary health care and skilled delivery services as well as their reasons for using or not using maternal health care and skilled delivery services. Methods: The study employed a social survey design with a quantitative approach to data analysis. Cluster Sampling was used, possibly based on rural communities, to efficiently collect data from different geographic locations. Simple random sampling individuals from each cluster ensures that all eligible individuals have an equal chance of being included in the study. This enhances the representativity of the sample. A total of 366 mothers were selected from four rural communities in the North East Region of Ghana. The choice of sample size considered factors like the study's objectives, available resources, and the desired level of statistical power. Data was primarily gathered through the administration of a questionnaire to the respondents. Factors considered for achieving representativity include, geographic representation, accessibility, healthcare infrastructure and healthcare professionals' attitudes. Findings: The study found that distance to health centres limits women's access to skilled delivery services. Lack of primary health facilities in the rural communities hamper maternal and child care services delivery. The attitude of health care professionals determines a mother's utilisation of maternal health care and skilled delivery services. Conclusion: The study contributes to the limited research on maternal health services and their impact on mother and child health in the study area. This study is one of the first to investigate into maternal health care as a key predictor of mother and child health in the study area. The study's theoretical lens was the Andersen and Newman Health Behavioural Model theory, which supports the explanation of distance, lack of primary health centres, attitudes and lack of skilled personnel to the non-utilisation of maternal and health services in rural communities. The study recommended that primary healthcare facilities and trained health professionals should be a priority of government in rural communities to promote maternal and child healthcare.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Midwives are essential to timely, effective, family-centred care. In South Africa, patients have often expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of midwifery care. Negative interpersonal relationships with caregivers, lack of information, neglect and abandonment were consistent complaints. Less is known about how midwives experience providing care.AIM: This research explored and described the experiences of midwives in providing care to labouring women in varied healthcare settings.SETTING: Midwives practicing in the Gauteng province, South Africa, in one of three settings: private hospitals, public hospitals or independent maternity hospital.METHODS: A convenience sample of midwives (N = 10) were interviewed. An exploratory and descriptive design, with individual semi-structured interviews conducted, asked a primary question: 'How is it for you to be a midwife in South Africa?' Transcribed interviews were analysed using thematic coding.RESULTS: Five themes were found: proud to be a midwife, regulations and independent function, resource availability, work burden and image of the midwife.CONCLUSION: Midwives struggle within systems that fail to allow independent functioning, disallowing a voice in making decisions and creating change. Regardless of practice setting, midwives expressed frustration with policies that prevented utilisation consistent with scope of practice, as well as an inability to practice the midwifery model of care. Those in public settings expressed concern with restricted resource appropriation. Similarly, there is clear need to upscale midwifery education and to establish care competencies to be met in providing clinical services.CONTRIBUTION: This research provides evidence of the midwifery experience with implications for needed health policy change.
Motivations for and experiences of childbirth abroad amongst Nigerian women: A qualitative study

Abstract:Birth tourism, the practice of a woman travelling out of her country of residence to another country to give birth, is common globally. Despite this, there is limited literature on the motivations and experiences of women who gave birth abroad. This study aims to address this gap by seeking to understand the motivations for and experiences of childbirth abroad among Nigerian women. Using purposive and snowball sampling, 27 Nigerian women who had children abroad were recruited via social media platforms. In-depth interviews were conducted remotely, audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed thematically. Braun and Clarke's six-step thematic analysis was used, which included data familiarisation, code generation, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining themes, and producing the report. We found that motivations for seeking childbirth abroad varied based on the mother's desires for their children, needs, and circumstances. These motivations were formed at different times before and after pregnancy and evolved over time. The experience of childbirth abroad is mostly good. However, there are also bad experiences, with some women feeling like they were treated differently because they were "self-paying" patients, "black", or not country residents. The cost of care is deemed exorbitant, but most pay their bills. Support of loved ones around childbirth abroad was considered crucial, although not always available. Through it all, realising the expected and collateral benefits of childbirth abroad made it all worth it. In conclusion, motivation for childbirth abroad varies and evolves. While globalisation, broken health systems, and ongoing sustained economic challenges in Nigeria and similar settings continue to motivate women to seek childbirth abroad, their experiences of childbirth abroad suggest that though it might be greener on the other side, it is not necessarily dark green. Systems are needed to elevate their voices in the public discourse and safeguard them from bad experiences of childbirth abroad.
Where, why and who delivers our babies? Examining the perspectives of women on utilization of antenatal and delivery services in a developing country

Abstract:Background: The differences in maternal mortality between developed and developing countries is due to differences in use of antenatal and delivery services. The study was designed to determine the views of women on utilization of antenatal and delivery services in urban and rural communities of Ebonyi state, Nigeria. Methods: Community based descriptive exploratory study design was employed. Qualitative data was collected through use of pre-tested focus group discussion (FGD) guide. Eight FGDs were conducted among women who were pregnant and others who have delivered babies one year prior to the study. Four FGDs each were conducted in urban and rural communities. QDA Miner Lite v2.0.6 was used in the analysis of the data. Results: Most of the participants in urban and rural areas prefer the man and woman deciding on where to receive antenatal and deliver care. All the participants in urban and rural communities wish for the support of their husbands when pregnant. Perceived quality of care is the major reason the women choose a facility for antenatal and delivery services. Others reasons included cost of services and proximity to a facility. Participants in rural communities were of the opinion that traditional birth attendants deliver unique services including helping women to achieve conception. For participants in urban, traditional birth attendants are very friendly and perhaps on divine assignment. These reasons explain why women still patronize their services. The major criticism of services of traditional birth attendants is their inability to manage complications associated with pregnancy and delivery. The major reasons why women delivery at home included poverty and cultural beliefs. Conclusions: All efforts should be made to reduce the huge maternal death burden in Nigeria. This may necessitate the involvement of men and by extension communities in antenatal and delivery matters. There is need to train health workers in orthodox health facilities on delivery of quality healthcare. Public enlightenment on importance of health facility delivery will be of essence. Encouraging women to deliver in health facilities should be prioritized. This may entail the provision of free or subsidized delivery services. The deficiencies of primary health centers especially in rural communities should be addressed.

Abstract:The concept “treat to target” in rheumatology was first developed for rheumatoid arthritis. A similar attempt to develop such an approach for spondyloarthritis was unsuccessful because the assessment tools and target of therapy had not been developed. In psoriatic arthritis (PsA), composite indices to assess disease activity, disease state, and responsiveness have been developed and can be used as targets. There are a number of definitions for remission, but none are widely accepted. However, a state of minimal disease activity has been defined. There is evidence now that the treat-to-target approach is feasible, using the minimal disease activity state as a target and devising a tight control approach, which is superior to standard of care. Further work will determine the best target and the best approach to reach it.

Abstract:Abstract Background The North Eastern region in Kenya experiences challenges in the utilization of maternal and newborn health services. In this region, culture and religion play a major role in influencing healthcare seeking behaviour of the community. This study was conducted to (i) understand key inherent barriers to health facility delivery in the Somali community of North Eastern Kenya and (ii) inform interventions on specific needs of this community. Methods The study was conducted among community members of Garissa sub-County as part of a baseline assessment before the implementation of an intervention package aimed at creating demand and increasing utilization of maternal and newborn services. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews were conducted with clan leaders, Imams, health managers, member of the county assembly, and service users (women and men) in three locations of Garissa sub-County. Data were analysed through content analysis, by coding recurrent themes and pre-established themes. Results Using health facility for delivery was widely acceptable and most respondents acknowledged the advantages and benefits of skilled birth delivery. However, a commonly cited barrier in using health facility delivery was the issue of male nurses and doctors attending to women in labour. According to participants, it is against their culture and thus a key disincentive to using maternity services. Living far from the health facility and lack of a proper and reliable means of transportation was also highlighted as a reason for home delivery. At the health facility level, respondents complained about the poor attitude of health care providers, especially female nurses being disrespectful; and the limited availability of healthcare workers, equipment and supplies. Lack of awareness and information on the importance of skilled birth attendance was also noted. Conclusion To increase health facility delivery, interventions need to offer services that take into consideration the sociocultural aspect of the recipients. Culturally acceptable and sensitive services, and awareness on the benefits of skilled birth attendance among the community members are likely to attract more women to use maternity services and thus reduce adverse maternal and newborn health outcomes.

A qualitative study of women's experiences of home birth in Sweden

Abstract:Objective: to illuminate the experiences of women who have given birth at home. Methods: a descriptive design with a qualitative approach based on interviews with 12 women. The text was analysed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic method. Findings: giving birth at home meant preserved authority and autonomy whereby the women themselves ruled the situation. The women's experiences of giving birth at home can be divided into three themes, with internal variations viewed as sub-themes. The main themes were as follows: 'having faith in one's own competence'; 'choosing support on one's own terms'; and 'being at home'. The experience embraced an earthly dimension, represented by reliance on inherent natural forces, and an existential, spiritual dimension, represented by faith in life itself, expressed in terms of the sacredness of giving birth, a heavenly experience, and wisdom about life itself. Conclusion: the experience of giving birth at home seems to differ from findings of studies focusing on the experience of giving birth in hospital. A reasonable goal for maternity care in hospital could, however, be that all women should have the opportunity to give birth on their own terms in a supportive and calm environment, surrounded by people who can assist if needed.
Childbirth Preparation: Knowledge of the Use of Non-Pharmacological Pain Relief Methods during Childbirth in Tshwane District, South Africa: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Effective management of labour pain is an essential aspect of care provided to women during childbirth. The aim of this study was to assess pregnant women's knowledge of using non-pharmacological pain relief methods during childbirth. Methods: This quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at four hospitals in the Tshwane District of South Africa. The sample consisted of 384 pregnant women. Results: The results show that (n = 200, 52.1%) pregnant women lack knowledge regarding non-pharmacological pain relief methods, while a minority (n = 101, 26.3%) had some knowledge, some (n = 73, 19%) were uncertain about these methods and others (n = 10, 2.6%) did not comment. Additionally, most respondents (n = 232, 60%) never received education about the various methods available to manage pain during labour at antenatal care, while others (n = 131, 34%) agreed that they received such education. A significant relationship between the level of education and knowledge about non-pharmacological pain relief methods was noted (p = 0.0082). In conclusion, respondents knew methods such as massage, breathing exercises, movements and birth positions. However, they lacked knowledge of birth companionship, acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), aromatherapy and music. The overall findings revealed that antenatal care services provided by midwives are not effectively preparing pregnant women for pain relief during childbirth.

Abstract:Objective To explore healthcare workers' and women's experiences of providing and seeking childbirth care in a busy urban maternity facility in Tanzania. Design A qualitative study with observations, in-depth interviews, and informal conversations, using thematic network analysis. Setting This study was conducted in a busy urban maternity unit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania which is a low-resource setting with a need to improve childbirth care. Participants Six frontline healthcare providers and four hospital managers from the facility, along with six postpartum women who gave birth at the facility. Findings Delays were observed throughout the childbirth care cascade, encompassing various stages. During antenatal care, timely provision of care was hindered by a high patientto-provider ratio, resulting in inadequate monitoring of risk factors. At the onset of labor, women delayed seeking care, sometimes, attempting a trial of labor after a previous Caesarean section. Within the facility, delays in care decision-making and patient management were evident due to insufficient resources. The accumulation of these delays over time influenced the quality of care provided and challenged the management of obstetric emergencies at the study facility. Key conclusions The study findings show that delays are prevalent throughout the entire childbirth care cascade. The accumulation of these delays over time has influenced the quality of care provided at the facility and increased the vulnerability of women experiencing obstetric emergencies. To effectively address the imperative of reducing maternal mortality in low-resource settings, it is essential to develop appropriate interventions that span the entire spectrum of childbirth care. Additionally, further research is needed to delve into the complexities of care decision-making and the quality of care delivered within urban maternal facilities. Implications for practice Our findings stress the need for comprehensive childbirth interventions and contextspecific guidelines to address challenges across the care cascade, particularly in lowresource settings. Urgent attention is required to prioritize care during patient triage and address systemic challenges within the healthcare system to improve birth outcomes and ensure effective facility-based care provision. Abstract:Objectives We assessed the knowledge and attitude of registered midwives towards collaborating with traditional birth attendants for maternal and neonatal healthcare services in rural communities. Design A descriptive cross-sectional survey was followed in this study. Participants Registered midwives in selected clinics in the City of Tshwane Municipality. Participants were recruited by stratified random sampling. Data was collected at the Thirty-four primary healthcare facilities in Gauteng province, South Africa. Measurement and results A self-assessment questionnaire was administered to 304 registered midwives. Two-hundred and sixty respondents returned the questionnaire representing a response rate of 86.6% which was statistically significant. The majority of Midwives in South Africa displayed a low level of knowledge (mean = 41.8, SD=1.7) on the role and practices of traditional birth attendants). Only 30.8% (n = 80) of midwives knew of the roles of traditional birth attendants for maternal and neonatal healthcare (MNH) services. With respect to knowledge, there was significant associated with the Professional category (p<0.015). In terms of attitude, registered midwives displayed negative attitudes towards collaborating with traditional birth attendants (mean = 46.8, SD=2.1). Approximately half (54.2%, n = 140) of midwives were amenable towards collaborating in the provision of antenatal care, and 70.4% (n = 183) of midwives agreed to collaborate with traditional birth attendants for extended roles such as accompanying women to health facilities. Association of demographic data and level of attitude showed there was significant relationship (p < 0.05) between registered midwives' level of education and their attitude towards collaboration. Key conclusions Midwives demonstrated positive attitude towards collaborating with traditional birth attendants at the antenatal care level only. Midwives were not amenable to collaboration at the level of intrapartum and postpartum care. Implications for practice Based on our results, collaboration should be at antenatal care level to allow for early detection, treatment, and prevention of antenatal complications thus reducing maternal mortality.

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to clarify the perceptions of rural women about their decisions on where to give birth in Gabon. Method This study used a qualitative descriptive design using semi‐structured interviews. Study participants were women at least 20 years old and had given birth within the past 2 years. The study area was approximately 25–30 km from the capital of Gabon. Data collection was conducted between May and mid‐July 2023. The interview guide was based on the Ottawa Decision Support Framework (ODSF) 2020 model. The data obtained were analyzed using content analysis for "perceptions in deciding the place of birth." Results A total of 18 women participated in the study. Six categories of reasons were identified for women's choice of birth location: (1) childbirth environment with physical safety; (2) childbirth environment with psychological safety; (3) physical accessibility; (4) affordable health facilities; (5) concerns about homebirth risks; and (6) unpleasant aspects of the hospital. Items (1)–(4) were the reasons for actively choosing the hospital as a birth location, whereas items (5) and (6) were the reasons for avoiding a place to give birth. Conclusions Women positively perceived and chose facilities that offer physical and mental safety, geographic accessibility, and affordable costs. Conversely, an environment where the safety of the mother and the child is threatened and the lack of respectful maternity care by the medical staff served as deterrents to facility use.

Abstract:Introduction: Poverty poses a significant barrier to accessing healthcare globally, particularly in relation to antenatal care (ANC) visits and the use of childbirth facilities, both of which are crucial for women's health and fetal well-being. In Somaliland, only 47% of pregnant women attend healthcare facilities for ANC, with a mere 33% receiving care from skilled birth attendants. Despite this, no previous studies have examined the relationship between poverty and maternal healthcare utilization in Somaliland. This study aims to investigate the effect of poverty on maternal healthcare utilization with focus on ANC visits and the choice of place of birth in Somaliland. Method: Utilizing data from the 2020 Somaliland Demographic Health Survey, a cross-sectional study design was employed, analyzing a nationally representative sample. The sample size used in this study was 3,183 women of reproductive age. Descriptive analysis, negative binomial regression, and multinomial logistic regression were conducted using Stata version 18.0. Diagnostic tests, including Chi-square - 2log likelihood statistic, Akaike Information Criterion, and Bayesian Information Criterion, were employed to evaluate model fit. Results: Poverty, as indicated by wealth quintile, was associated with reduced ANC visits (adjusted incidence rate ratio (aIRR) = 0.884, 95% CI: 0.791-0.987) among women in poorer households compared to those in richer households. Women in Togdheer, Sool, and Sanaag regions had lower ANC visit rates compared to Maroodi Jeex region (aIRR = 0.803, 95% CI: 0.687-0.939; aIRR = 0.710, 95% CI: 0.601-0.839; aIRR = 0.654, 95% CI: 0.558-0.768, respectively). Women from poorer households had lower probabilities of opting for public health facilities (adjusted relative risk ratio (aRRR) = 0.457, 95% CI: 0.352-0.593) and private health facilities (aRRR = 0.195, 95% CI: 0.111-0.341) over home births compared to women in richer households. Women in Togdheer, Sool, and Sanaag regions had lower probabilities of choosing public (aRRR range: 0.331-0.175) and private (aRRR range: 0.350-0.084) health facilities for delivery over home births compared to women in Maroodi Jeex region. Conclusion: Poverty significantly impedes maternal healthcare utilization, contributing to lower ANC attendance and preference for home births over public or private health facility births. Addressing these disparities requires initiatives to eliminate financial barriers, such as user fees, and enhance equitable access through community-based health insurance and improved healthcare infrastructure.

Abstract:Introduction: The rates of home birth have been increasing; reliance on social media as a source of medical advice and support for patients has also been increasing. This is the first study that directly evaluates birthing people's perceptions, attitudes, and advice about planned home births expressed in public posts and comments on two popular social media platforms - Reddit and TikTok. Methods: Posts on each platform were searched from January 2017 through July 2022 using the terms "home birth" and "home vs. hospital birth". Included posts were from the United States written in English, with at least 10 comments and 10 upvotes or likes. Up to five themes were collected per post or comment and were categorized as supportive, opposing, or neutral. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) determined that the project did not include human subjects. Results: Collectively, 777 posts and 47,452 comments were evaluated for inclusion; 257 posts and 2,408 comments met the inclusion criteria for analysis. In posts, 69% supported, 20% opposed, and 11% were neutral toward home birth (n = 257). Similarly, in comments, 53% supported, 28% opposed, and 19% were neutral (n = 2,408). Supportive themes included concerns about the safety of hospital delivery and reassurance about home birth safety, enhanced patient control with home deliveries, positive personal stories reinforcing home birth, concerns about excessive interventions in hospital birth, and advice about preparing for home birth. Opposing themes included concerns about risks of home birth, negligence of those attempting it, reassurance that hospital birth does offer women control, greater financial costs of home birth and that medical interventions can be lifesaving. Conclusion: These results can help physicians recognize some of the women's concerns about hospital births and what information they may find on social media guiding them as they formulate their birth plans. Overall, this information helps with the goal of balancing patient safety with the need to respect patient autonomy.
