Abstract:Aqueous Zn-metal batteries open up promising prospects for large-scale energy storage due to the advantages of ample components, cost-effectiveness, and safety features. However, the notorious dendritic development and unavoidable hydrogen evolution reaction of Zn have grown to be one of the main barriers inhibiting its further commercialization. Despite substantial studies, the mechanism of nucleation and deposition of Zn2+ ions on zinc layer surfaces remains elusive. Here, inspired by additive, the SnCl2 additive is introduced to initiate the in-situ formation of the ZnS-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the Zn anode, which creates a protective "shielding effect" that hinders direct contact between water and the zinc surface, suppressing the random growth of Zn dendrites in the whole process. The mechanism of Zn nucleation was revealed by employing high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, consecutive electron diffraction coupled with finite element method (FEM) simulations. Moreover, spontaneously formed 3D architecture consists of micorsized hemispherical Sn particles not only suppresses the Zn dendrite growth by reducing the local current density, but also enables the lateral growth of Zn crystals by increasing the average surface energy. Such an electrolyte enables a long cycle life of over 2000 h in the Zn||Zn cell. Importantly, the assembled Zn||MnVO full cells with SnCl2 electrolyte also delivers substantial capacity (171.1mA h g-1 at 1 A h g-1), presenting a promising application. These discoveries not only deepen the comprehension of fundamental scientific knowledge regarding the microscopic reaction mechanism of the Zn anode but also offer significant insights for optimizing performance.

Abstract:Graphite was reported by J.O. Besenhard as the reservoir for alkali ions in 1974. The booming period of lithium-ion batteries arrived after the graphite patent issued by Sony Co. in 1991. The flourish development is due to the address of lithium dendrite issue through the substitution from lithium metal to graphite. Currently, the zinc dendrite formation in zinc-ion batteries is one of the major issues. Herein, we fabricate a zinc-ion full battery by replacing zinc metal with organic quinone, which is a zinc dendrite free material. This novel zinc-ion full battery exhibits excellent cycling stability with capacity retention of 94.4% and high specific capacity of 189.5 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles. Ascribed to the low cost of quinone and long cycle performance, this work could inaugurate a new era for rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Metallic zinc is an ideal anode material for aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) owing to its high capacity in theory, low redox potential, high security and low cost. However, metallic zinc anodes suffer from an inferior long-term cycling stability, due to zinc dendrite growth, zinc corrosion and other factors. Elucidating potential reasons for these issues is desperately needed for large-scale applications of metallic zinc anodes. Herein, we aim to parse zinc stripping/plating behaviors and dendrite growth in various aqueous electrolytes and explore the mechanism of failure process of metallic zinc electrodes by combining an operando transmission electron microscope (TEM) technique, electrochemical analysis and theoretical calculation. Besides, effects and acting mechanism of Mn2+ and CF3SO3 − in zinc-salt aqueous electrolytes on zinc plating/stripping behavior were investigated. The results demonstrated that adding Mn2+ could suppressed zinc dendrite growth by forming manganese-based compounds clusters around zinc electrodes during zinc plating process. In addition, dendrite-free anode was garnered when Zn(CF3SO3)2 was employed as electrolyte, enabling the superior stability and excellent reversibility of Zn/Zn symmetric cell. This work not only reports a deep understanding of zinc stripping/plating behaviors in aqueous electrolytes, but also provides effective strategies to achieve long-term stable zinc anodes and ZIBs.

Understanding and Controlling the Nucleation and Growth of Zn Electrodeposits for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZBs) have been proposed as one of the most promising electrical energy-storage systems due to their low cost, high safety, environmental friendliness, and high energy density. However, their application is impeded by the Zn dendrite growth, which may puncture the separator, causing an internal short circuit. Although numerous efforts have been devoted to alleviating dendrite issues by structural design, surface modification, or electrolyte optimization, there are few works focusing on the fundamental research to understand the formation of Zn dendrites, which is critical to address the dendrites issue. In this work, we have systematically investigated the nucleation and growth behaviors of Zn on a stainless steel substrate. We reveal the dependence of Zn growth morphology on cycling conditions (current density and areal capacity) and further elucidate the intricate correlation with cycle life. It is observed that higher current density corresponds to higher nuclei density with a smaller size of zinc deposits and lower areal capacity render smaller zinc flakes, which contributes to the long cycle life of Zn-ion batteries. Based on these findings, a seeding protocol is then proposed to improve the uniformity and compaction of the Zn electrode. Abstract:The previously disregarded problem of pit formation, which arises from uncontrolled Zn dissolution, has been successfully resolved by manipulating the dissolution energies. Conjugated adsorbents effectively modulate the charge distribution at the electrode–electrolyte interface, engineering dissolution energies and facilitating uniform morphological evolution. The commercialization of aqueous Zn‐ion batteries (AZIBs) for power‐grid energy storage systems is hindered by the safety concerns arising from the Zn dendrite growth. The primary approach in addressing this issue is to induce planar depositions. However, modulating the Zn dissolution process which directly reshapes surface morphology and reserves growth sites has long been overlooked. Herein, by utilizing ester compounds as an illustration, it is revealed that engineering the dissolution energy barrier is a pivotal factor in promoting homogeneous Zn dissolution. Ester adsorbents effectively redistribute charge densities at the electrode–electrolyte interface due to the presence of zincophilic ester functional group and conductive π‐conjugation structure. This effect eventually facilitates Zn dissolution across the surface, transforming the potholed and defective dissolution morphology into a smooth and consistent form. Thus, enhanced cycling stability can be achieved in both half‐cells and full‐cells, offering an extensive lifespan of thousands of hours for the dissolution and deposition cycles. This work provides a principle for the selection of Zn dissolution improvers to suppress Zn metal dendrite growth by regulating Zn dissolution behavior.

Abstract:The bifunctional acetylacetone additive modulates the primary solvation structure of Zn2+ and reconfigures the electrode–electrolyte interface by leveraging the strong polarity of the carbonyl functional group. This effectively inhibits side reactions and dendrite growth, resulting in the achievement of a highly reversible zinc metal anode and durable zinc ion batteries. Aqueous Zn ion batteries are appealing systems owing to their safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness; however, their practical applicability is impeded by the growth of Zn dendrites and side reactions. Herein, a dual‐functional electrolyte additive, namely acetylacetone (AT) is utilized for the simultaneous regulation of the solventized structure and anode–electrolyte interface (AEI) to achieve a durable, dendrite‐free Zn anode. Theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations reveal that the AT molecule can be adsorbed onto Zn metal surface to reconstruct the AEI and allow for the primordial desolvation of [Zn(H2O)6]2+ at locations away from the surface of the Zn anode during deposition, which is attributed to the strong polarity of the carbonyl functional group. In addition, the two carbonyls of AT can replace two H2O molecules in the primary solventized structure of Zn2+ to reduce the number of active H2O molecules, efficiently suppressing Zn dendrite growth and detrimental reactions. As a proof of concept, a Zn//Cu cell is constructed in ZnSO4 containing 3 vol.% AT electrolyte, delivering stable cycling over 1800 cycles while maintaining a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.74%. This study provides a practical approach for inhibiting dendrite growth and side reactions by harnessing carbonyl chemistry.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) are low cost with a promising theoretical capacity and inherent safety, and thus have drawn increasing attention as prospective energy storage devices in large‐scale energy storage systems. However, severe dendrite growth and side reaction problems hinder the practical application of ZIBs. Here, molecular sieves with ordered mesoporous channels are constructed to tailor the local electrolyte solvation structure on the zinc surface. Different high‐concentration solvation structures can be realized by adjusting the pore diameter of the molecular sieve, and the optimal pore geometry is a mesoporous channel with a diameter of 2.5 nm that induces the formation of a locally concentrated electrolyte and affords a lower Zn2+ de‐solvation energy in Mobil composition of matter number 41 (MCM41). The resulting MCM41‐Zn anode exhibits high cycling stability for Zn stripping/plating under different current densities (over 1800 h at 1 mA cm–2, 1 mAh cm–2, and 2200 h at 5 mA cm–2, 1 mAh cm–2). Moreover, the CaV8O20·nH2O//MCM41‐Zn full cell shows a high capacity of 274.2 mAh g−1 and a long lifespan (no capacity decay after 1000 cycles at 4 A g–1). Inspired by the “solvent‐in‐salt” concept, a molecular sieve with ordered mesoporous channels are coated on the zinc anode, which can successfully tailor local electrolyte solvation structure and form a highly concentrated electrolyte at the interface. In addition, much lower energy consumption for Zn2+ plating can be realized via the ordered channels, facilitating uniform Zn deposition and showing promise in dendrite‐free zinc batteries.

Interface Engineering via Ti3C2Tx MXene Electrolyte Additive toward Dendrite-Free Zinc Deposition

Abstract:Abstract Zinc metal batteries have been considered as a promising candidate for next-generation batteries due to their high safety and low cost. However, their practical applications are severely hampered by the poor cyclability that caused by the undesired dendrite growth of metallic Zn. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was first used as electrolyte additive to facilitate the uniform Zn deposition by controlling the nucleation and growth process of Zn. Such MXene additives can not only be absorbed on Zn foil to induce uniform initial Zn deposition via providing abundant zincophilic-O groups and subsequently participate in the formation of robust solid-electrolyte interface film, but also accelerate ion transportation by reducing the Zn 2+ concentration gradient at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Consequently, MXene-containing electrolyte realizes dendrite-free Zn plating/striping with high Coulombic efficiency (99.7%) and superior reversibility (stably up to 1180 cycles). When applied in full cell, the Zn-V 2 O 5 cell also delivers significantly improved cycling performances. This work provides a facile yet effective method for developing reversible zinc metal batteries.

Abstract:A "dual‐layer" coating is fabricated via an in situ conversion strategy, consisting of a VSe2/ZnSe outer layer with low lattice mismatch and a nano metallic V inner layer with corrosion resistance. This design not only facilitates interfacial ion transfer and electric field homogenization but also enables planar deposition, thereby achieving reversible and uniform zinc deposition. Owing to the considerable capacity, high safety, and abundant zinc resources, zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) have been garnering much attention. Nonetheless, the unsatisfactory cyclic lifespan and poor reversibility originate from side reactions and dendrite obstacles to their practical applications. In addition to inhibiting the corrosion of aqueous electrolytes, regulating planar deposition is a key strategy to enhance their long‐term stability. Herein, an in situ conversion strategy is reported to construct a protective "dual‐layer" structure (VZSe/V@Zn) on zinc metal, consisting of the VSe2‐ZnSe outer layer with low lattice mismatch to Zn (002) plane, and corrosion‐resistant nanometallic V inner layer. Such design integrates superior interfacial ionic/electronic transfer, corrosion resistance, and unique planar deposition regulation capability. The as‐prepared VZSe/V@Zn demonstrates remarkable durability of 238 h at 50 mA cm−2 with a high depth of discharge (68.3% DOD) in the Zn||Zn symmetric cell. Even in the anode‐free system, the as‐prepared protective layer can extend the cycle life up to 2000 cycles, with an outstanding capacity retention of 93.1% and ultra‐high average coulombic efficiency of 99.998%. This work delineates an effective strategy for fabricating lattice‐matching protective layers, with profound implications for elucidating zinc deposition mechanisms and paving the way for the development of high‐performance zinc batteries.

Abstract:Zinc metal-based aqueous batteries (ZABs) offer a sustainable, affordable, and safe energy storage alternative to lithium, yet inevitable dendrite formation impedes their wide use, especially under long-term and high-rate cycles. How the battery can survive after dendrite formation remains an open question. Here, we pivot from conventional Zn dendrite growth suppression strategies, introducing proactive dendrite-digesting chemistry via a mesoporous Ti3C2 MXene (MesoTi(3)C(2))-wrapped polypropylene separator. Spectroscopic characterizations and electrochemical evaluation demonstrate that MesoTi(3)C(2), acting as an oxidant, can revive the formed dead Zn-0 dendrites into electroactive Zn2+ ions through a spontaneous redox process. Density functional theory reveals that the abundant edge-Ti-O sites in our MesoTi(3)C(2) facilitate high oxidizability and electron transfer from Zn-0 dendrites compared to their in-plane counterparts. The resultant asymmetrical cell demonstrates remarkable ultralong cycle life of 2200 h at a practical current of 5 mA cm(-2) with a low overpotential (<50 mV). The study reveals the unexpected edge effect of mesoporous MXenes and uncovers a new proactive dendrite-digesting chemistry to survive ZABs, albeit with inevitable dendrite formation.

Abstract:A competitive solvation structure strategy is proposed to further immobilize free water molecules and construct an organic/anion‐derived solid electrolyte interphase for dendrite‐free and long lifespan zinc ion batteries, providing an emerging strategy toward practical energy storage systems. Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are troubled by the severe Zn dendrite growth and side reactions, manifesting as low coulombic efficiency and poor cyclic stability. Electrolyte engineering is regarded as an efficient method to improve Zn metal reversibility. Herein, a distinctive electrolyte regulation strategy is demonstrated for long‐lasting ZIBs through the construction of competitive solvation structures. In the composite aqueous system, the insoluble LiNO3 in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is introduced to outwit active water dissociation from Zn2+ coordination environment, and the organic/anion‐enriched solvation structure enables the formation of a stable interface to effectively restrain adverse reactions. Distinctly, the Zn metal anode exhibits inhibited dendrite growth with high reversibility of plating/stripping processes over 1600 h with an exceptional cumulative capacity over 16 Ah cm−2, an ultra‐long lifespan over high‐temperature (50 °C), and high discharge of depth (65%). Furthermore, the Zn || V2O5 full battery can operate stably over 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1. This work points a direction to effectively solve the major challenges of ZIBs through the collaborative construction of a regulated electrolyte environment and interfacial chemistry.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion battery is a potential energy storage device due to their environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Nonetheless, the reduced reversibility of Zn anode arising from continuous parasitic reactions (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and corrosion) and random dendrite growth has a significant impact on their life and performance. Herein, organic small-molecule formamide (FA) is proposed as an additive to the aqueous ZnSO4 electrolyte and realizes a dendrite-free and highly reversible Zn anode by regulating the solvation structure. Through theoretical calculation, physicochemical and electrochemical characterization, it is evidenced that FA additive shows the following characteries: 1) replace part of H2O molecules in the solvation structure to participate in the solvation structure of Zn2+, and significantly inhibit the HER, 2) break the original hydrogen bonding network, resulting in the improvement of the low temperature performance of the battery, 3) preferentially adsorb on the Zn surface to regulate the charge distribution at the Zn anode/electrolyte interface and inhibit Zn corrosion during the initial cycling process, 3) contribute to the formation of inorganic-organic double-layer solid electrolyte interface (SEI) for dendrite-free uniform zinc deposition. Benefiting from these advantages, Zn||Cu asymmetric batteries assembled with this electrolyte show more than 1600 highly reversible zinc plating/stripping cycles, and the average Coulomb efficiency achieves 99.32%. Zn||Zn symmetric batteries survive more than 1600 h of stable cycle at 1 mA cm-2, 0.5 mAh cm-2. As a proof of concept, the Zn||MnO2 full cells provide excellent cycle performance over 2000 cycles at the current density of 4 A g-1, and maintain a high capacity retention of 85.1%.

Abstract:Dendrite growth and side reactions are culprits leading to the short lifespan and low Coulombic effi-ciency in aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Electrolyte engineering has been considered as the most facile and efficient strategy to overcome the above issues. Herein, introducing trace zinc gluconate to adjust the content of the strong H-bond in a conventional ZnSO4 electrolyte is proposed to achieve a stable Zn anode. Experimental measurements demonstrate that the solvation configuration around Zn ions has been evidently reconstructed due to the intensive coordination ability of gluconate anions. At the same time, gluconate anions electrostatically adsorb on the Zn metal surface, forming a new solid-liquid interface. As such, side reactions with water molecules and the self-corrosion of Zn metal have been significantly suppressed due to the newly formed solvation structure and interface, restraining the growth of dendrites. Impressively, the cycling life of the Zn||Zn symmetric cell in the modified electrolyte is able to sustain as long as 1500 h even at 5.0 mA cm(-2). The as-assembled NH4V4O10||Zn full cell also realizes 1000 cycles with only 0.0049% capacity decay per cycle. Abstract:Aqueous zinc (Zn) battery has shown its great promise as intrinsically safe battery technology. However, Zn batteries are still far from practical use, mainly due to Zn dendrite growth and side reactions. We propose a U-shaped deposition configuration to address the dendrite issue of Zn anode, which is achieved within a nanoarray of 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) flakes grown on the Zn anode. Rich zincophilic sites of the flakes enable uniform pre-seeding of Zn ions, followed by lateral deposition of Zn metal onto the MOF flakes and bottom-up plating from the anode surface, finally achieving a U-shaped deposition. The U-shaped deposition configuration is well demonstrated by simulation results in which the ion concentration and current distribution are regulated by the MOF arrays. This procedure combining pre-seeding and bottom-up deposition naturally eliminates the “tip effect” and inhibits Zn dendrite. Together with the ideal suppression of the hydrogen evolution reaction, the Zn metal anode features long cycling stability up to 1880 h at a current density of 5 mA cm−2 and extends the long lifespan to full cells. This study demonstrates a renewed understanding of controlling Zn deposition in practical batteries and paves a new avenue toward dendrite-free metal anodes.

Abstract:Dendrite growth and by-products in aqueous Zn ion batteries have been impeded their rapid development as energy storage devices. Here we utilized a concentric-ring like additive, hexaoxacyclooctadecane (18-crown-6, 18C6), into typical ZnSO4 electrolytes to hook the Zn ion on surface by confinement effects during the electrochemical process. Combining experimental characterization and theoretical calculations, the dynamics were systematically investigated to offer a deceleration Zn deposition, in which a low charge transfer barrier and a high desolvation barrier were harvested simultaneously with 18C6. It regulated the solventized structure of Zn ions and held the steady hydrophobic interface during the electrochemistry process. The by-products yield was extremely low. Zn symmetric cells be cycled over 2400 h at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2. These studies provided an effective strategy to reach the dendrite-free and high-density Zn energy storage devices.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc metal batteries are emerging as a promising alternative for energy storage due to their high safety and low cost. However, their development is hindered by the formation of Zn dendrites and side reactions. Herein, a macromolecular crowding electrolyte (MCE40) is prepared by incorporating polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) into the aqueous solutions, exhibiting an enlarged electrochemical stability window and anti-freezing properties. Notably, through electrochemical measurements and characterizations, it is discovered that the mass transfer limitation near the electrode surface within the MCE40 electrolyte inhibits the (002) facets. This leads to the crystallographic reorientation of Zn deposition to expose the (100) and (101) textures, which undergo a "nucleation-merge-growth" process to form a uniform and compact Zn deposition. Consequently, the MCE40 enables highly reversible and stable Zn plating/stripping in Zn/Cu half cells over 600 cycles and in Zn/Zn symmetric cells for over 3000 hours at 1 mA cm−2. Furthermore, Na0.33V2O5/Zn and MnO2/Zn full cells display promising capacity and sustained stability over 500 cycles at room and sub-zero temperatures. This study highlights a novel electrochemical mechanism for achieving preferential Zn deposition, introducing a unique strategy for fabricating dendrite-free zinc metal batteries.

Abstract:Severe growth of zinc dendrites induced by uniform deposition and rampant side reactions remain key factors limiting the application of ZIBs.The side reactions integrating hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), corrosion, and passivation involve free water molecules from Zn2+−6 H2O primary solvation sheath (PSS) in bulk electrolyte and the unstable phase interface between Zn metal and electrolyte. Sodium benzaldehyde 2,4‐disulfonate (B24DADS) featuring various blocks of polar sulfonate group, Lewis basic aldehyde groups and hydrophobic benzene ring can built an stable phase interface thus suppressing interfacial side reactions and guiding uniform Zn deposition by simultaneously regulating the solvation structure of Zn2+ and constructing a H2O‐poor and zincophilic dual electric layer structure, and creating an inorganic‐organic hybrid SEI layer. Based on the above advantages, long‐term cycling stability with low retarding voltage is achieved in Zn//Zn batteries. Even under critical testing conditions (20 mA cm−2/20 mAh cm−2), the zinc anode can provide a 3700 h ultra‐long cycle life and with lower voltage polarization. The inferior reversibility of Zn metal anode caused by undesired Zn dendrite and severe interfacial side reactions has to be addressed for the commercial application of Zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). Here, a multiple functional sodium benzaldehyde 2,4‐disulfonate(B24DADS) additives with various blocks of polar sulfonate group, Lewis basic aldehyde groups, and hydrophobic benzene ring is proposed to regulate the solvation structure of Zn2+, construct an H2O‐poor and zincophilic dual electric layer structure, and create a passive SEI on the Zn anode surface, thus restaining dendrite growth and interfacial side reactions. Furthermore, uniform deposition mechanics of the Zn are revealed by the synergistic effect of induced deposition, additive‐derived SEI formation, and texture regulation. In addition, Na+ can also limit the growth of zinc dendrites based on electrostatic shielding mechanisms. Therefore, the multifunctional B24DADS additive grants the anode to deliver remarkable electrochemical performance. Under critical test conditions (20 mA cm−2/20 mAh cm−2), the zinc provides superior long cycling (3700 h) with a low polarization voltage (0.02 V). B24DADS containing electrolyte is well matched with manganese dioxide cathode. This effort renders a promising way to explore advanced additives with unique molecular structures for addressing zinc dendrite growth and rampant side effects.

Abstract:Uncontrolled dendrites, corrosion and passivation of Zn metal seriously limit the development of Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs). Electrolyte engineering with various additives is a promising approach due to its high operability and significant effects. Herein, we report a low-cost and high-effective cysteamine (CS) as the additive to achieve dendrite-free ZIBs. Dendrite-free ZIBs with CS as the organic additive can prevent direct contact of Zn with water through a dynamic adsorption layer and desolvation of [Zn(H2O)6]2+. The optimized electrolyte also shows advantages in re-regulating the Zn ion fluxes and holding the steady hydrophobic interface during the electrochemical process to alleviate water decomposition and anode corrosion during cycling. CS employed as the additive enables stable Zn plating and stripping over 1360 h at the current density of 1 mA cm−2 and the capacity of 1 mAh cm−2. The Zn/diquinoxalino [2,3-a:2′,3′-c] phenazine (HATN) and Zn/Mn-doped V2O5 (MVO) full cells with CS as the additive exhibits ultra-high Coulombic efficiency (CE, 100 ± 0.3%) as well as long cycling performance at the current density of 1 A g−1. This work will provide a novel experimental approach in understanding the dendrite-suppression mechanism and pave a way to construct electrolyte engineering for ZIBs.
