Abstract:After being for a long time disregarded, marine plastic pollution is now a growing topic among scholars, industry and government. It represents an enormous pressing threat to the integrity of the marine ecosystem, influencing its ability to provide socio-economic benefits on which human well-being is based [1] . The need to react is clear: the annual discharge of plastic into the ocean is estimated to be 11 million tons [2] . Projections indicate that by 2040, plastic leakage into the ocean will nearly triple [2] . This article aims to perform a systematic literature review on marine plastic pollution, approaching it from a problem-solving perspective. The study provides readers with an overview of how the issue is generally perceived and the potential solutions implemented and proposed thus far. Indeed, as a multi-sectoral problem, marine plastic pollution does not have a single solution. An appropriate approach to the problem should involve several levels of action: governmental (at local and global levels) and community-based (consumer and industry commitment and local initiatives). To conduct our systematic review, we decided to narrow our research to three aspects essential for effectively addressing the issue: consumer perception of marine plastic pollution, best local practices of plastic pollution management and global governance of marine plastic. Consumer perception of the issue is crucial in the fight against marine plastic pollution. In this regard, many authors highlight the important role that the general public can play in influencing patterns of industrial and government choice of actions. Sharing knowledge and raising the level of awareness about the issue appears essential. Many authors also stress the importance of bottom-up approaches to implement sustainable waste management. In this sense, local management of marine plastic debris can be seen as an opportunity for communities to drive economic development based on innovative use and disposal of plastic waste. As for the governance level, this study tries to collect research on marine plastics devoted to the study of the ongoing and future possible actions that global decision-makers can take to address the issue. Notwithstanding the high relevance of local governance of marine plastic pollution, we have decided to focus our attention on the global governance level. Indeed, marine plastic pollution, as a global problem, necessarily needs a coordinated international response. Despite the optimistic expectations stemming from the ongoing negotiations for a global plastics-binding treaty since March 2022, the reviewed authors denounce the current international marine plastic legal framework as incomplete and fragmented, characterised by a shortage of effective and binding instruments to reduce marine plastic pollution. Overall, from the analysis of our selected articles, it is possible to observe a rising widespread consensus on the urgency for transitioning from the current linear take–make–dispose approach to a more circular model.

Abstract:Plastics are very useful materials and present numerous advantages in the daily life of individuals and society. However, plastics are accumulating in the environment and due to their low biodegradability rate, this problem will persist for centuries. Until recently, oceans were treated as places to dispose of litter, thus the persistent substances are causing serious pollution issues. Plastic and microplastic waste has a negative environmental, social, and economic impact, e.g., causing injury/death to marine organisms and entering the food chain, which leads to health problems. The development of solutions and methods to mitigate marine (micro)plastic pollution is in high demand. There is a knowledge gap in this field, reason why research on this thematic is increasing. Recent studies reported the biodegradation of some types of polymers using different bacteria, biofilm forming bacteria, bacterial consortia, and fungi. Biodegradation is influenced by several factors, from the type of microorganism to the type of polymers, their physicochemical properties, and the environment conditions (e.g., temperature, pH, UV radiation). Currently, green environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic made from renewable feedstocks are starting to enter the market. This review covers the period from 1964 to April 2020 and comprehensively gathers investigation on marine plastic and microplastic pollution, negative consequences of plastic use, and bioplastic production. It lists the most useful methods for plastic degradation and recycling valorization, including degradation mediated by microorganisms (biodegradation) and the methods used to detect and analyze the biodegradation.

Abstract:Plastic pollution is generated by the unsustainable use and disposal of plastic products in modern society, threatening economies, ecosystems, and human health. Current clean-up strategies have attempted to mitigate the negative effects of plastic pollution but are unable to compete with increasing quantities of plastic entering the environment. Thus, reducing inputs of plastic to the environment must be prioritized through a global multidisciplinary approach. Mismanaged waste is a major land-based source of plastic pollution that can be reduced through improvements in the life-cycle of plastics, especially in production, consumption, and disposal, through an Integrated Waste Management System. In this review paper, we discuss current practices to improve life cycle and waste management of plastics that can be implemented to reduce health and environmental impacts of plastics and reduce plastics pollution. Ten recommendations for stakeholders to reduce plastic pollution include (1) regulation of production and consumption; (2) eco-design; (3) increasing the demand for recycled plastics; (4) reducing the use of plastics; (5) use of renewable energy for recycling; (6) extended producer responsibility over waste; (7) improvements in waste collection systems; (8) prioritization of recycling; (9) use of bio-based and biodegradable plastics; and (10) improvement in recyclability of e-waste.

Abstract:The issue of marine plastic litter pollution is multifaceted, cross-sectoral, and ongoing in the absence of appropriate management measures. This study analysed the issue of marine plastic litter pollution in the context of the Descriptor 10 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and Good Environmental Status of the oceans and seas. The Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) framework was used to assess the causes, effects, and management measures to changes in the marine environment resulting from marine plastics pollution. We noted that less than 10 peer-reviewed publications have applied the Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model to the issue of marine plastics pollution. Some basic needs such as food security, movement of goods and services, and shelter are also some of the major drivers of marine plastic pollution. The use of plastics is linked to multiple economic sectors (fisheries, agriculture, transport, packaging, construction) and other human activities. A significant amount of the resulting pressures came from the economic sectors for packaging and construction. State changes occurred at the environmental (contamination and bioaccumulation), ecosystem (ingestion of plastics, ghost fishing) and ecosystem service levels (supply of sea food, salt and cultural benefits), with possible loss of jobs and income being some of the observed impacts on human welfare. Responses as management measures, which are tailored to meet each component of the DPSIR framework, were identified. These included policies, regulations, technological advancement and behavioural change. The research acknowledges the issue of marine plastics pollution as a global environmental problem and recommends a trans-disciplinary approach, involving all types of stakeholders. Future research and analysis applying the DPSIR framework will be useful to provide the information necessary for the effective, adaptive management of litter pollution by marine plastics.

Abstract:Threats emerging from microplastic pollution in the marine environment have received much global attention. This review assessed sources, fate, and impacts of microplastics in marine ecosystems and identified gaps. Most studies document the ubiquity of microplastics and associated environmental effects. Effects include impacts to marine ecosystems, risks to biodiversity, and threats to human health. Microplastic leakage into marine ecosystems arises from plastic waste mismanagement and a lack of effective mitigative strategies. This review identified a scarcity of microplastics’ mitigation strategies from different stakeholders. Lack of community involvement in microplastic monitoring or ecosystem conservation exists due to limited existence of citizen science and stakeholder co-management initiatives. Although some management strategies exist for controlling effects of microplastics (often implemented by local and global environmental groups), a standardized management strategy to mitigate microplastics in coastal areas is urgently required. There is a need to review policy interventions aimed at plastic reduction in or near coastal ecosystems and evaluate their effectiveness. There is also a need to identify focal causes of microplastic pollution in the marine environment through further environmental research and governance approaches. These would extend to creating more effective policies as well as harmonized and extended efforts of educational campaigns and incentives for plastic waste reduction while mandating stringent penalties to help reduce microplastic leakage into the marine environment.

Abstract:The advent of plastic to the social situation has suppressed a series of demands from both the industry and the population, due to cost, durability and disposal. Because they can be rigid, malleable, opaque, translucent, easy or difficult to melt by the action of fire, some make them capable of serving as raw material for various products on the market, including those widely used in the food industry. In view of the above, the present study aims at a bibliographical review on the topic of microplastics, where the search will be to verify the primary and secondary steps necessary for the formation of the compound, its direct and indirect influence on food production, the physical-chemical processes through which compounds are obtained and the presence or absence of regulation regarding this environmental liability. The present study aims to analyze as a basis the search for knowledge of the primary and secondary formation of microplastics. Subsequently, together with its main objective, this study aims to search for the physico-chemical and thermodynamic phenomena involved in the process of formation and obtaining of microplastics, the polluting potential and, like all waste, its implications for human health. A study horizon was established covering the years 2015 to 2023, where 3,750 articles were found and after applying open access filters, duplication of publication, words present only in the abstract and not in the text, 49 articles remained that are the object of this study. The direct implications of microplastic pollution are already a relevant reason for discussion and subsequent regulation by managers, researchers, international organizations and society in general. Public health problems that can transform into microplastics, containment and adsorption mechanisms of these compounds in living organisms, are points to be pursued by academia as a whole. Contamination by these compounds was found in bottled mineral water, human milk, processed foods, seafood, showing the extent of contamination of this material.

Abstract:The recalcitrance of modern plastics is a key driver of the accretion of plastics in both waste management streams and the environment. As a result, the management of plastic waste has become a focal point of both research and public policy. The following review summarises the effectiveness of widespread approaches to plastic management, before exploring recent developments in the use of both naturally derived products and plastic-degrading organisms to reduce the burden of plastic wastes, including the potential value of symbiotic relationships between plastic-degrading organisms in the biodegradation of plastics in the environment. To date, plastic management strategies have typically focused on interventions to influence both plastic production and consumer behaviour, improvements in effective waste management systems and increased circularity of materials, and changes to the product design to increase the lifespan of the product and its suitability for preferred waste streams. However, the relative success of these measures has been mixed. Complementary to these established approaches is the increasing exploitation of biological and biochemical processes and natural products, including the identification of organisms and enzymes which are able to biodegrade different plastics at meaningful rates. This recent research frequently focuses on microbes from soil and marine environments, identifying numerous enzymes capable of acting on polymers or specific functional groups. While questions remain as to their effectiveness outside of laboratory conditions, the distribution of identified species and their apparent effectiveness indicates the potential benefits of these microbes both individually or in symbiosis with an appropriate host species.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution is a significant environmental issue caused by unsustainable plastic use and disposal. These tiny plastic particles (<5 mm) have been found in virtually every environmental compartment, and their environmental removal is currently deemed unfeasible. Microplastics have received a lot of attention over the past decade due to concerns over their ecological and health effects. However, limited research has been done on the management of microplastics. Microplastic pollution is directly related to total plastic pollution, so reducing environmental plastic waste is crucial for reducing microplastics. Overall plastic pollution can be reduced by different strategies including, effective plastic waste management encompassing the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover) along with upcycling, implementing policies that govern the entire lifecycle of plastics promoting a circular economy for plastics, enhancing treatment technologies and clean-up, creating public awareness and developing sustainable alternatives. However, the multifaceted nature of microplastic contamination cannot be properly addressed by employing these strategies independently, leading to the limited effectiveness of these strategies. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach integrating the above strategies to limit the environmental plastic input and reduces the plastic waste already accumulated is crucial. This manuscript provides a framework for effective management of microplastics and provides comprehensive discussions of each strategy within the framework including the potential measures by governments, international organizations and the public to reduce plastic waste. Moreover, it provides recommendations for improving the legislative framework and identifies the research gaps in the microplastic clean-up technologies and sustainable plastic alternatives that need to be addressed to improve management of environmental microplastics.

Abstract:Marine ecosystems are the final sinks for plastic debris and microplastics (MPs) arising from inland sources. Despite the findings from research studies, the overall MPs in all oceans are not completely illustrated. This review summarizes MPs' data (2015–2023) from 2068 locations in all five oceans, including bays/gulfs, seas, mid-oceans, and 202 marine fish species. Varying concentrations were recorded in the surface waters and mainly the gastrointestinal tract of the fishes, with sizes mostly from 0.1 to 5 mm. Polyethylene (PE; 30.3%), polypropylene (PP; 18.7%), and PE terephthalate (PET; 11.8%) were the major polymers, whereas fragments (41%) and fibers (38%) were the dominant shapes in water. Fishes were mainly documented with PE (36%), PP (17.6%), and polyamide (PA; 8%), which were in the form of fibers (55.5%) and fragments (30%). These MPs are considered to be a threat to the biota and must be controlled at the source. Strategies such as wetlands to reduce the flow of storm waters, the addition of clumping agents/algae in wastewater treatment plants to trap MPs, and the replacement of plastic goods with biodegradable or sustainable products are discussed in this review that can significantly reduce the accumulation of inland MPs in the seawaters. Relatively, challenges in the path of plastic waste and MPs' management are analyzed to direct future research and policies. This review may help illustrate their migratory and distribution patterns from the coastal areas to the mid-ocean. It will further provide a consistent data set for marine plastic waste management.

Abstract:Plastic usage increases year by year, and the growing trend is projected to continue. However as of 2017, only 9% of the 9 billion tons of plastic ever produced had been recycled leaving large amounts of plastics to contaminate the environment, resulting in important negative health and economic impacts. Curbing this trend is a major challenge that requires urgent and multifaceted action. Based on scientific and gray literature mainly published during the last 10 years, this review summarizes key solutions currently in use globally that have the potential to address at scale the plastic and microplastic contaminations from source to sea. They include technologies to control plastics in solid wastes (i.e. mechanical and chemical plastic recycling or incineration), in-stream (i.e. booms and clean-up boats, trash racks, and sea bins), and microplastics (i.e. stormwater, municipal wastewater and drinking water treatment), as well as general policy measures (i.e. measures to support the informal sector, bans, enforcement of levies, voluntary measures, extended producer responsibility, measures to enhance recycling and guidelines, standards and protocols to guide activities and interventions) to reduce use, reuse, and recycle plastics and microplastics in support of the technological options. The review discusses the effectiveness, capital expenditure, and operation and maintenance costs of the different technologies, the cost of implementation of policy measures, and the suitability of each solution under various conditions. This guidance is expected to help policymakers and practitioners address, in a sustainable and cost-efficient way, the plastic and microplastic management problem using technologies and policy instruments suitable in their local context.

Abstract:Plastics offer versatility, durability and low production costs, but they also pose environmental and health risks due to improper disposal, accumulation in water bodies, low recycling rates and temporal action that causes physicochemical changes in plastics and the release of toxic products to animal health and nature. Some microorganisms may play crucial roles in improving plastic waste management in the future. Cunningamella echinulata has been identified as a promising candidate that remains viable for long periods and produces a cutinase that is capable of degrading plastic. Other recent approaches involving the use of microorganisms are discussed in this review. However, there does not seem to be a single science that is efficient or most appropriate for solving the problem of plastic pollution on the planet at present. Regulations, especially the implementation of different laws that address the entire plastic cycle in different countries, such as Brazil, the USA, China and the European Union, play important roles in the management of this waste and can contribute to reducing this problem. In the context of the transversality of the information compiled here, the current limitations are discussed, and an effective plan is proposed to reduce plastic pollution. Although it is challenging, it involves implementing legislation, promoting sustainable alternatives, improving collection and recycling systems, encouraging reuse, supporting research and technological innovation, promoting corporate responsibility, collaborating globally, raising public awareness, optimizing waste management and, above all, continuously monitoring the progress of actions based on measurable metrics.

Abstract:This systematic review represents one of the first attempts to compare the efficacy of the full suite of management interventions developed to control (prevent or remove) microplastics (MPs) in freshwater bodies, both man-made and natural. The review also traces the evolution of research on the topic in relation to the timing of key policy and regulatory events and investigates whether interventions are being applied within regions and freshwater bodies that represent concerns in terms of MP pollution. The review incorporated bibliometric analysis and meta-analysis of 124 original research articles published on the topic between 2012 and April 2023. To supplement the key findings, data were extracted from 129 review articles on the major knowledge gaps and recommendations. The number of articles on the topic increased with each year, coinciding with a range of global policy commitments to sustainability and mitigating plastic pollution. The majority of the studies focused on MPs in general, rather than any particular particle shape or polymer type, and were conducted at wastewater/sludge treatment plants. Upstream interventions accounted for the majority of studies reviewed (91.1%). A smaller proportion (4.8%) of studies involved reduction in production and physical removal at the point of production (1.6%); treatment-related objectives such as removal through filtration and separation and the combination of these with other technologies in hybrid systems were dominant. Of the physical, chemical and biological methods/technologies (and combinations thereof) employed, physical types (particularly membrane filtration) were most common. The majority of the studies within the wastewater/sludge, stormwater and in situ water/sediment categories exhibited removal efficacies >90%. Although new interventions are constantly being developed under laboratory conditions, their scalability and suitability across different settings are uncertain. Downstream interventions lack sustainability without effective upstream interventions. Though in situ methods are technically achievable, they may not be feasible in resource-limited settings.

[Assessment of cerebral infarction by MRI--particularly fogging effect].

Abstract:Fogging effect in cerebral infarction was studied by MRI in a 51-year-old male patient. Initial symptoms consisted of mild disturbance of consciousness and left hemiparesis. MRI examination was performed 2, 13 and 22 days after onset and the results were compared with CT findings during the same period. CT on day 2 revealed a wide of infarction in the region of the middle cerebral artery including the basal ganglia. The presence of a fogging effect was seen by CT on day 12 and MRI revealed a high signal intensity in the region of the basal ganglia in T 1 image, a high signal intensity in the peripheral region and a low signal intensity in the center in T 2 image. It was possible to define the lesion as the ordinary infarcted lesion by the subsequent CT and MRI. MRI indicated the infarct lesion was to be a high signal intensity in T1 image and a high signal intensity in the periphery and a low signal intensity in the center in T 2 image. It was concluded that these findings indicated hemorrhage, strongly suggesting that the cause of the fogging effect was hemorrhagic infarction.

Abstract:The growing trend of using plastics and the accumulation of plastic waste in nature have caused many concerns. The fragmentation of plastic waste causes the formation of microplastics. Microfiber plastics (a subset of microplastics) enter the marine environment, then, after entering the food chain, cause damage to organisms. In this review article, sources of microplastic waste in aquatic environments and the use of biodegradable plastics as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics are investigated. As a result, biodegradable plastics cannot reduce pollution to zero. Hence, there is a need for complementary mechanisms in this field. More sustainable mechanisms are needed to reduce pollution. Therefore, the potential of implementing a circular economy to reduce plastic waste into marine environments has been investigated, and effective measures and ideas have been expressed as a way to achieve environmental goals along with economic and political aspects. On-site recycling, plastic waste reuse, long-term policies, economic justification, equipment and product modification, financial incentives, etc. are all complementary mechanisms proposed. More attention to research and development units is also necessary.

Abstract:Marine plastic pollution is a well-recognised and debated issue affecting most marine ecosystems. Despite this, the threat of plastic pollution on seagrasses has not received significant scientific attention compared to other marine species and habitats. The present review aims to summarise the scientific data published in the last decade (January 2012–2023), concerning the evaluation of plastic pollution, of all sizes and types, including bio-based polymers, on several seagrass species worldwide. To achieve this goal, a comprehensive and critical review of 26 scientific papers has been carried out, taking into consideration the investigated areas, the seagrass species and the plant parts considered, the experimental design and the type of polymers analysed, both in field monitoring and in laboratory-controlled experiments. The outcomes of the present review clearly showed that the dynamics and effects of plastic pollution in seagrass are still under-explored. Most data emerged from Europe, with little or no data on plastic pollution in North and South America, Australia, Africa and Antarctica. Most of the studies were devoted to microplastics, with limited studies dedicated to macroplastics and only one to nanoplastics. The methodological approach (in terms of experimental design and polymer physico-chemical characterisation) should be carefully standardised, beside the use of a model species, such as Zostera marina , and further laboratory experiments. All these knowledge gaps must be urgently fulfilled, since valuable and reliable scientific knowledge is necessary to improve seagrass habitat protection measures against the current plastic pollution crisis.

Abstract:This review provides a critical analysis of all the available literature on plastic pollution in Morocco's marine environment between 2014 and 2023. It discusses the abundance, composition, and sources of plastic litter, the adopted sampling methods, and characterizations, as well as the impact on the biota and ecosystem services. Moreover, it also covers national marine litter management policies. Our analysis reveals that, up to this point, there have been limited studies conducted and a noticeable scarcity of data, particularly pertaining to the prevalence of microplastics in marine biota, sediment and water. While many of the studies have been conducted in diverse coastal regions of the Mediterranean (60 %), the Atlantic coasts remain largely unexplored (40 %). Data from various studies indicate that plastic litter persists as a significant issue along Moroccan coasts (53–94 % of total litter collected), with reported litter (0.58 items/m2) and microplastic densities (7680 MPs/kg to 34,200 MPs/kg) generally surpassing those in neighboring countries. Plastic litter poses a considerable threat to Moroccan biodiversity, primarily through ingestion (16 species) and entanglement (18 species). This review can serve as a valuable resource to inform strategies aimed at reducing the leakage of plastic litter into aquatic environments, as well as to guide future research.

Abstract:Plastic is a ubiquitous material used across the globe. It is easily transported to various habitats and can then be ingested by animals, with the potential to bioaccumulate up the food chain further. Although classified as solid waste, some plastics can be considered hazardous waste due to the chemicals used in the production process and those that can be adsorbed, such as hydrophobic pollutants in seawater. Plastics can break down into secondary particulate plastics, or be microscopically primary plastics, smaller than 5 mm. Marine organisms of all sizes can mistake plastic for food or consume prey with microplastics. This can cause detrimental toxic effects at a cellular, biochemical, and muscular level. This research uses a systematic quantitative literature review (SQLR) method to determine the most common polymers, hazardous chemicals, and marine organisms to ingest microplastic and incur ecotoxicological consequences. The results indicated polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) to be the topmost common polymers, with sizes between 1 and 100 μm. Plastic was observed to be a sink for non-additive pollutants more than a vector. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were the most common pollutants found. Biological impacts and side effects included mortality, reproductive effects, genotoxicity, accumulation, and behavioral effects. Further research is needed regarding the interrelationship of plastic polymers, additives, and non-additives combined for inducing toxic effects.

Abstract:Microplastic contamination has rapidly become a serious environmental issue, threatening marine ecosystems and human health. This review aims to not only understand the distribution, impacts, and transfer mechanisms of microplastic contamination but also to explore potential solutions for mitigating its widespread impact. This review encompasses the categorisation, origins, and worldwide prevalence of microplastics and methodically navigates the complicated structure of microplastics. Understanding the sources of minute plastic particles infiltrating water bodies worldwide is critical for successful removal. The presence and accumulation of microplastics has far reaching negative impacts on various marine creatures, eventually extending its implications to human health. Microplastics are known to affect the metabolic activities and the survival of microbial communities, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fauna present in marine environments. Moreover, these microplastics cause developmental abnormalities, endocrine disruption, and several metabolic disorders in humans. These microplastics accumulates in aquatic environments through trophic transfer mechanisms and biomagnification, thereby disrupting the delicate balance of these ecosystems. The review also addresses the tactics for minimising the widespread impact of microplastics by suggesting practical alternatives. These include increasing public awareness, fostering international cooperation, developing novel cleanup solutions, and encouraging the use of environment-friendly materials. In conclusion, this review examines the sources and prevalence of microplastic contamination in marine environment, its impacts on living organisms and ecosystems. It also proposes various sustainable strategies to mitigate the problem of microplastics pollution. Also, the current challenges associated with the mitigation of these pollutants have been discussed and addressing these challenges require immediate and collective action for restoring the balance in marine ecosystems.
