Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites allow the synthesis of high-quality, nanostructured semiconducting films via easily accessible solution-based techniques. This has allowed tremendous development in optoelectronic applications, primarily solar cells and light-emitting diodes. Allowed by the ease of access to nanostructure, chirality has recently been introduced in semiconducting perovskites as a promising way to obtain advanced control of charge and spin and for developing circularly polarized light sources. Circular polarization of photoluminescence (CPL) is a powerful tool to probe the electronic structure of materials. However, CPL in chiral perovskites has been scarcely investigated, and a study in bulk thin films and at room temperature is still missing. In this work, we fabricate bromine-based chiral perovskites by using a bulky chiral organic cation mixed with CsBr, resulting in Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite thin films. We measure CPL on these films at room temperature and, by using unpolarized photoexcitation, we record a degree of circular polarization of photoluminescence in the order of 10(-3) and provide a full spectral characterization of CPL. Our results show that chirality is imparted on the electronic structure of the semiconductor; we hypothesize that the excess in polarization of emitted light originates from the charge in the photogenerated Wannier exciton describing an orbit in a symmetry-broken environment. Furthermore, our experiments allow the direct measurement of the magnetic dipole moment of the optical transition, which we estimate to be >= 0.1 mu(B). Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings on the development of chiral semiconducting perovskites as sources of circularly polarized light.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic metal halide perovskites have recently demonstrated outstanding efficiencies in photovoltaics as well as highly promising performances for a wide range of optoelectronic applications such as lasing, light emission, optical detectors, and even for radiation detection. Key to the realization of functional perovskite micro/nanosystems on the ubiquitous silicon optoelectronics platform is through sophisticated lithography. Despite the rapid progress made in halide perovskite lasing, direct lithographic patterning of perovskite films to form optical cavities on conventional substrates remains extremely challenging. This study realizes room‐temperature high‐quality factor whispering‐gallery‐mode lasing ( Q ≈ 1210) from patterned lead halide perovskite microplatelets fabricated in periodic arrays on silicon substrate with micropatterned BN film as the buffer layer. By varying the size of the platelets, modal selectivity for single mode lasing can be achieved with different cavity sizes or by simply breaking the structural symmetry of the cavity through designing the pattern. Importantly, this work demonstrates a straightforward, versatile bottom‐up scalable strategy to realize high‐quality periodic perovskite arrays with variable cavity sizes for large‐area light‐emitting and optical gain applications.
Exceptionally High- glum Circularly Polarized Lasers Empowered by Strong 2D-Chiroptical Response in a Host-Guest Supramolecular Microcrystal

Abstract:Circularly polarized (CP) lasers hold tremendous potential for advancing spin information communication and display technologies. Organic materials are emerging candidates for high-performance CP lasers because of their abundant chiral structures and excellent gain characteristics. However, their dissymmetry factor (glum) in CP emission is typically low due to the weak chiral light matter interactions. Here, we presented an effective approach to significantly amplifying glum by leveraging the intrinsic 2D-chiroptical response of an anisotropic organic supramolecular crystal. The organic complex microcrystal was designed to exhibit large 2D-chiroptical activities through strong coupling interactions between their remarkable linear birefringence (LB) and high degree of fluorescence linear polarization. Such 2D-chiroptical response can be further enhanced by the stimulated emission resulted from an increased degree of linear polarization, yielding a nearly pure CP laser with an exceptionally high glum of up to 1.78. Moreover, exploiting the extreme susceptibility of LB to temperature, we demonstrate a prototype of temperature-controlled chiroptical switches. These findings offer valuable insights for harnessing organic crystals to facilitate the development of high-performance CP lasers and other chiroptical devices.

Abstract:Electrically responsive photonic crystals represent one of the most promising intelligent material candidates for technological applications in optoelectronics. In this research, dye-doped polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals（PSCLCs） with negative dielectric anisotropy were fabricated, and mirrorless lasing with an electrically tunable wavelength was successfully achieved. Unlike conventional liquid-crystal lasers, the proposed laser aided in tuning the emission wavelength through controlling the reflection bandwidth based on gradient pitch distribution. The principal advantage of the electrically controlled dye-doped PSCLC laser is that the electric field is applied parallel to the helical axis, which changes the pitch gradient instead of rotating the helix axis, thus keeping the heliconical structure intact during lasing. The broad tuning range（～110 nm） of PSCLC lasers,coupled with their stable emission performance, continuous tunability, and easy fabrication, leads to its numerous potential applications in intelligent optoelectronic devices, such as sensing, medicine, and display.

Abstract:Circularly polarized emission of high dissymmetry (glum ≈ 0.56) is achieved from perovskite halide nanocrystals by depositing them on arrays of prefabricated resonant 2D gammadions. By using different materials, a hybrid photonic structure is managed to design with TiO2 and Au materials, in order to obtain resonances in the whole visible spectrum demonstrating the generation of multi‐wavelength circularly polarised light. Chiral nano‐emitters have recently received great research attention due to their technological applications and the need for a fundamental scientific understanding of the structure‐property nexus of these nanoscale materials. Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) with many interesting optical properties have anticipated great promise for generating chiral emission. However, inducing high anisotropy chiral emission from achiral perovskite NCs remains challenging. Although chiral ligands have been used to induce chirality, their anisotropy factors (glum) are low [10−3 to 10−2]. Herein, the generation of high anisotropy circularly polarized photoluminescence (CPL) from LHP NCs is demonstrated using chiral metasurfaces by depositing nanocrystals on top of prefabricated resonant photonic structures (2D gammadion arrays). This scalable approach results in CPL with glum to a record high of 0.56 for perovskite NCs. Furthermore, the differences between high‐index dielectric chiral metasurfaces and metallic ones are explored for inducing chiral emission. More importantly, the generation of simultaneous multi‐wavelength circularly polarized light is demonstrated by combining dielectric and metallic chiral metasurfaces.

Abstract:Wavelength‐tunable nano/microlasers are essential components for various highly integrated and multifunctional photonic devices. Based on the different band gap/composition of inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite materials, broad band light absorption and emission devices can be achieved. Herein, a vapor–liquid–solid route for growing cesium lead halide perovskite (CsPbX 3 , X = Cl, Br, I) microcrystal structures is demonstrated. These square‐shaped microstructures exhibit strong blue, green, and red photoluminescence, indicating that their band gaps can be engineered to cover the entire visible range. Optically pumped red–green–blue whispering‐gallery mode lasers based on the controlled composition of these microcrystals are successfully realized at room temperature. Moreover, rationally designed white‐light‐emitting chips with high brightness are fabricated utilizing these metal halide perovskite microstructures grown on sapphire. All these results evidently suggest a feasible route to the design of red–green–blue lasers and white‐light emitters for potential applications in full‐color displays as well as photonic devices.
Towards Chiral Lasing from All‐Solution Processed Flexible Perovskite Nanocrystal‐Liquid Crystal Membrane

Abstract:Circularly polarized (CP) coherent light sources are of great potential for various advanced optical applications spanning from display/imaging to data processing/encryption and quantum communication. Here we report the first demonstration of CP amplified spontaneous emission (ASE)/lasing from a free‐standing and flexible membrane device consisting of perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) and cholesteric liquid crystal layers sandwiched within a Fabry‐Perot cavity architecture. The chiral liquid crystal cavity enables the generation of CP light from the device. The device is completely solution‐processable, and displays CP ASE with record dissymmetry factor (glum) as high as 1.4, which is 3 orders of magnitude higher as compared with glum of CP luminescence of chiral ligand‐capped colloidal PNCs. The device exhibits ultra‐flexibility as the ASE intensity remains unchanged after repeated 100 bending cycles and it is stable for more than 3 months with 80% of its original intensity. Furthermore, the ultra‐flexibility enabled the generation of ASE from various objects of different geometric surfaces covered with the flexible perovskite membrane device. This work not only demonstrates the first CP ASE from PNCs membrane with extremely high glum but also opens the door toward the fabrication of ultra‐flexible, extremely stable, and all solution‐processable perovskite chiral laser devices. Abstract:Hybrid perovskite semiconductor materials are predicted to lock chirality into place and encode asymmetry into their electronic states, while softness of their crystal lattice accommodates lattice strain to maintain high crystal quality with low defect densities, necessary for high luminescence yields. We report photoluminescence quantum efficiencies as high as 39% and degrees of circularly polarized photoluminescence of up to 52%, at room temperature, in the chiral layered hybrid lead-halide perovskites (R/S/Rac)-3BrMBA 2 PbI 4 [3BrMBA = 1-(3-bromphenyl)-ethylamine]. Using transient chiroptical spectroscopy, we explain the excellent photoluminescence yields from suppression of nonradiative loss channels and high rates of radiative recombination. We further find that photoexcitations show polarization lifetimes that exceed the time scales of radiative decays, which rationalize the high degrees of polarized luminescence. Our findings pave the way toward high-performance solution-processed photonic systems for chiroptical applications and chiral-spintronic logic at room temperature.

Abstract:Semiconducting chiral photonic crystals possessing tunable electronic and photonic band gaps are fabricated with caesium lead halide perovskites, where the coupling between emission and cavity resonance frequencies can be easily established at a specific wavelength in the visible region, thus enabling circularly polarized luminescence with a red, green, or blue color. The generation and detection of circularly polarized light (CPL) are of importance in many modern technologies such as digital communications, machine vision, bio‐imaging, and 3D displays. In this study, inspired by the fact that various species of plants and animals can efficiently produce and/or perceive CPL with chiral photonic crystal structures, efforts are made to fabricate luminescent chiral photonic crystals with caesium lead halide perovskites, a class of solution‐processable semiconductors that have excellent luminescence properties and readily tunable electronic band gaps. Coupling between the emission frequency of the perovskite and the cavity resonance frequency of the photonic crystal structure can be established at any desired point in the visible region, giving rise to CPL output with a dissymmetry factor up to −0.34. These results suggest a new approach to chiral light‐emitting materials and may contribute to the development of semiconductors with ordered microstructures.

Abstract:The versatile hybrid perovskite nanocrystals are one of the most promising materials for optoelectronics in virtue of their tunable bandgaps and high photoluminescence quantum yields. However, their inherent crystalline chemical structure limits the chiroptical properties achievable with the material. The production of chiral perovskites has become an active field of research for its promising applications in optics, chemistry or biology. Typically, chiral halide perovskites are obtained by the incorporation of different chiral moieties in the material. Unfortunately, these chemically modified perovskites have demonstrated moderate values of chiral photoluminescence so far. Here we introduce a general and scalable approach to produce chiral photoluminescence from arbitrary nano‐emitters assembled into 2D‐chiral metasurfaces. The fabrication via nanoimprinting lithography employs elastomeric molds engraved with chiral motifs covering millimeter areas that are used to pattern two types of unmodified colloidal perovskite nanocrystal inks: green‐emissive CsPbBr3 and red‐emissive CsPbBr1I2. The perovskite 2D‐metasurfaces exhibit remarkable photoluminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) of 0.16 that can be further improved up to glum of 0.3 by adding a high refractive index coating on the metasurfaces. This scalable approach to produce chiral photoluminescent thin films paves the way for the seamless production of bright chiral light sources for upcoming optoelectronic applications. Abstract:Cesium lead halide perovskites have shown great potential applications in photoelectric devices because of their high quantum efficiency, good stability, and tunable bandgap. Herein, we prepared CsPbBr3 microwires with a high crystal quality, smooth surface, and rectangular cross section via the solution method. The as-prepared microwires presented a high quality whispering gallery mode lasing with a low threshold of 9.1 μJ cm−2 and a high quality factor of ∼3000. Furthermore, we obtained the alloys of CsPbClxBr3−x (0 < x < 2) microwires through the gas-phase anion exchange method and realized the wavelength tunable single-mode lasing emission ranging from ∼546.8 nm to ∼468.0 nm. This work will expand the practical application of lead halide perovskites in spectrograph, optical communication, and in-chip photoelectric devices.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite based micro- and nano- lasers have been widely studied in past two years. Due to their long carrier diffusion length and high external quantum efficiency, lead halide perovskites have been considered to have bright future in optoelectronic devices, especially in the "green gap" wavelength region. However, the quality (Q) factors of perovskite lasers are unspectacular compared to conventional microdisk lasers. The record value of full width at half maximum (FWHM) at threshold is still around 0.22 nm. Herein we synthesized solution-processed, single-crystalline CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite microrods and studied their lasing actions. In contrast to entirely pumping a microrod on substrate, we partially excited the microrods that were hanging in the air. Consequently, single-mode or few-mode laser emissions have been successfully obtained from the whispering-gallery like diamond modes, which are confined by total internal reflection within the transverse plane. Owning to the better light confinement and high crystal quality, the FWHM at threshold have been significantly improved. The smallest FWHM at threshold is around 0.1 nm, giving a Q factor over 5000.
Chiral Perovskite Nanoplatelets with Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence in the Strong Confinement Regime

Abstract:Chiral inorganic lead halide perovskite nanoplatelets with tunable circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence are synthesized by a ligand exchange reaction. Combined with large‐scale first‐principles calculations, the chirality transfer mechanism is revealed as the surface distortion which induces the symmetry breaking of the perovskite lattice. This work provides design principles for chiral excitonic nanocrystals for photonic applications. Chiral perovskite nanocrystals have emerged as an interesting chiral excitonic platform that combines both structural flexibility and superior optoelectronic properties. Despite several recent demonstrations of optical activity in various chiral perovskite nanocrystals, efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with tunable energies remains a challenge. The chirality imprinting mechanism as a function of perovskite nanocrystal dimensionality remains elusive. Here, atomically thin inorganic perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) are synthesized with precise control of layer thickness and are functionalized by chiral surface ligands, serving as a unique platform to probe the chirality transfer mechanism at the organic/perovskite interface. It is found that chirality is successfully imprinted into mono‐, bi‐, and tri‐layer inorganic perovskite NPLs, exhibiting tunable circular dichroism (CD) and CPL responses. However, chirality transfer decreases in thicker NPLs, resulting in decreased CD and CPL dissymmetry factors for thicker NPLs. Aided by large‐scale first‐principles calculations, it is proposed that chirality transfer is mainly mediated through a surface distortion rather than a hybridization of electronic states, giving rise to symmetry breaking in the perovskite lattice and spin‐split conduction bands. The findings described here provide an in‐depth understanding of chirality transfer and design principles for distorted‐surface perovskites for chiral photonic applications.

Abstract:Semiconductor micro/nano-cavities with high quality factor (Q) and small modal volume provide critical platforms for exploring strong light-matter interactions and quantum optics, enabling further development of coherent and quantum photonic devices. Constrained by exciton binding energy and thermal fluctuation, only a handful of wide-band semiconductors such as ZnO and GaN have stable excitons at room temperature. Metal halide perovskite with cubic lattice and well-controlled exciton may provide solutions. In this work, high-quality single-crystalline cesium lead halide CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities are synthesized by vapor-phase van der Waals epitaxy method. The as-grown perovskites show strong emission and stable exciton at room temperature over the whole visible spectra range. By varying the halide composition, multi-color (400-700 nm). WGM excitonic lasing is achieved at room temperature with low threshold (similar to 2.0 mu J cm(-2)) and high spectra coherence (similar to 0.14-0.15 nm). The results advocate the promise of inorganic perovskites towards development of opto-electronic devices and strong light-matter coupling in quantum optics.

Abstract:Development of on-chip coherent light sources with desired single-mode operation and straightforward spectral tunability has attracted intense interest due to ever-increasing demand for photonic devices and optoelectronic integration, but still faces serious challenges. Herein, we propose a facile method to synthesize cesium lead halide (CsPbX3 ) microstructures with well-defined morphologies, sizes, and constituent element gradient. The scheme is conducted using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which is subsequently associated with annealing-assisted solid-solid anion exchange. For the plate-shaped structures, the controllability on the cross-sectional dimension enables to precisely modulate the lasing modes, thus achieving single-mode operation; while tuning the stoichiometric of the halogen anion components in the plate-shaped CsPbIx Br3-x alloy samples, the lasing wavelengths are straightforwardly varied to span the entire visible spectrum. By comparison, the experimental scheme on synthesizing alloyed CsPbIx Br3-x perovskites is conducted using an in-situ approach, thereby achieving precise modulation of bandgap-controlled microlasers by controlling the reaction time. Such laser properties like controllable microcavity modes and broad stoichiometry-dependent tunability of light-emitting/lasing colors, associated with the facile synthesizing method of monocrystalline CsPbIx Br3-x structures, make lead halide perovskites ideal materials for the development of wavelength-controlled microlasers toward practical photonic integration. Abstract:Bottom-up synthesized single-crystalline micro- and nanolasers have been intensively studied in past decades. While the potential of single-crystalline lasers in integrated photonics has been seriously considered for years, their device performances are restricted by the scattering loss. Here, in contrast to the utilization of Q-factor or laser linewidth, the ultrasmooth surfaces of lead halide perovskite microplate lasers are exploited and their potential in subdiffraction limit imaging is explored for the first time. The nanostructures on the surface of the microplate can effectively scatter the evanescent waves and make the corresponding subwavelength spatial information detectable at far field. With the assistance of perovskite microlasers, a 41 nm nanogap and complex nanostructures are resolved with a conventional microscope. Meanwhile, more than 1000 determinants within the lasing are imaged simultaneously and the image contrast is further improved by the amplification of perovskite microlasers. This work shall revolutionize the applications of single-crystalline microlasers and subdiffraction limit imaging techniques.

Abstract:Chiral supramolecular aggregates have the potential to explore circularly polarized lasing with large dissymmetry factors. However, the controllable assembly of chiral superstructures towards deterministic circularly polarized laser emission remains elusive. Here, we design a pair of chiral organic molecules capable of stacking into a pair of definite helical superstructures in microcrystals, which enables circularly polarized lasing with deterministic chirality and high dissymmetry factors. The microcrystals function as optical cavities and gain media simultaneously for laser oscillations, while the supramolecular helices endow the laser emission with strong and opposite chirality. As a result, the microcrystals of two enantiomers allow for circularly polarized laser emission with opposite chirality and high dissymmetry factors up to ~1.0. This work demonstrates the chiral supramolecular assemblies as an excellent platform for high-performance circularly polarized lasers.

Abstract:Abstract Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as attractive gain materials for solution-processed microlasers. Despite the recent surge of reports in this field, it is still challenging to develop low-cost perovskite NC-based microlasers with high performance. Herein, we demonstrate low-threshold, spectrally tunable lasing from ensembles of CsPbBr 3 NCs deposited on silica microspheres. Multiple whispering-gallery-mode lasing is achieved from individual NC/microspheres with a low threshold of ∼3.1 μ J cm −2 and cavity quality factor of ∼1193. Through time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, electron–hole plasma recombination is elucidated as the lasing mechanism. By tuning the microsphere diameter, the desirable single-mode lasing is successfully achieved. Remarkably, the CsPbBr 3 NCs display durable room-temperature lasing under ∼10 7 shots of pulsed laser excitation, substantially exceeding the stability of conventional colloidal NCs. These CsPbBr 3 NC-based microlasers can be potentially useful in photonic applications.
