Abstract:The Conway–Maxwell–Poisson distribution can be used to model under‐dispersed or over‐dispersed count data. This study proposes a flexible and generalized attribute exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA), namely GEWMA, control chart for monitoring count data. The proposed EWMA chart is based on the Conway–Maxwell–Poisson distribution. The performance of the proposed chart is evaluated in terms of run length (RL) characteristics such as average RL, median RL, and standard deviation of the RL distribution. The average RL of the proposed GEWMA chart is compared with Sellers chart. The sensitivity of the standard Poisson EWMA (PEWMA) chart is also studied and compared with the proposed GEWMA chart for under‐dispersed or over‐dispersed data. It has been observed that the PEWMA chart is very sensitive for under‐dispersed or over‐dispersed data while the proposed GEWMA is very robust. Finally, the generalization of the proposed chart to the Bernoulli EWMA, PEWMA, and geometric EWMA charts is also studied using someone simulated data sets. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The geometric-Poisson exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart has been shown to be more effective than the Poisson EWMA chart in monitoring the number of defects in the production processes. In these applications, it is assumed that the process parameters are known or have been accurately estimated. However, in practice, the process parameters are rarely known and must be estimated from reference sample to construct the geometric-Poisson EWMA chart. The performance of the given chart, due to variability in the parameter estimation, might differ from known parameters' case. This article explored the effect of estimated parameters on the conditional and marginal performance of the geometric-Poisson EWMA chart. The run length characteristics are calculated using a Markov chain approach and the effect of estimation on the performance of the given chart is shown to be significant. Recommendations about the proposer choice of sample size, smoothing constant, and dispersion parameter are made. Results of this study highlight the practical implications of estimation error, and to offer advice to practitioners when constructing/analyzing a phase-I sample.

Abstract:The control chart based on the compound Poisson distribution (the negative binomial exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart) has been shown to be more effective than the c‐chart to monitor the wafer nonconformities in semiconductor production process. The performance of the negative binomial EWMA chart is generally evaluated with the assumption that the process parameters are known. However, in many control chart applications, the process parameters are usually unknown and are required to be estimated. For an accurate parameter estimate, a very large sample size may be required, which is seldom available in the applications. This article investigates the effect of parameter estimation on the run length properties of the negative binomial EWMA charts. Using a Markov chain approach, we show that the performance of the negative binomial EWMA chart is affected when parameters are estimated compared with the known‐parameter case. We also provide recommendations regarding phase I sample sizes, smoothing constant and clustering parameter. The sample size must be quite large for the in‐control chart performance to be close to that for the known‐parameter case. Finally, a wafer process example has been used to highlight the practical implications of estimation error and to offer advice to practitioners when constructing/analysing a phase I sample. Abstract:The statistical performance of traditional control charts for monitoring the process shifts is doubtful if the underlying process will not follow a normal distribution. So, in this situation, the use of a nonparametric control charts is considered to be an efficient alternative. In this paper, a nonparametric exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart is developed based on Wilcoxon signed‐rank statistic using ranked set sampling. The average run length and some other associated characteristics were used as the performance evaluation of the proposed chart. A major advantage of the proposed nonparametric EWMA signed‐rank chart is the robustness of its in‐control run length distribution. Moreover, it has been observed that the proposed version of the EWMA signed‐rank chart using ranked set sampling shows better detection ability than some of the competing counterparts including EWMA sign chart, EWMA signed‐rank chart, and the usual EWMA control chart using simple random sampling scheme. Abstract:In many modern industrial scenarios, measurements of the quality characteristics of interest are often required to be represented as functional data or profiles. This motivates the growing interest in extending traditional univariate statistical process monitoring (SPM) schemes to the functional data setting. This article proposes a new SPM scheme, which is referred to as adaptive multivariate functional EWMA (AMFEWMA), to extend the well-known exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart from the univariate scalar to the multivariate functional setting. The proposed method distinguishes itself by adaptively selecting the weighting parameter in the calculation of the EWMA statistic to enhance the sensitivity of the AMFEWMA control chart across a spectrum of potential out-of-control scenarios. Such adaptability is essential in industrial processes, where multivariate functional quality characteristics are also subject to varying degrees of change. The favorable performance of the AMFEWMA control chart over existing methods is assessed via an extensive Monte Carlo simulation. Its practical applicability is demonstrated through a case study in monitoring the quality of a resistance spot welding (RSW) process in the automotive industry through online observations of dynamic resistance curves, which are associated with multiple spot welds on the same car body and are recognized as highly representative of the RSW process quality. The proposed method is implemented in the R package funcharts, available online on CRAN.

Abstract:Measurement error (M.E) can have a substantial impact on quality control applications, diminishing the sensitivity to detect changes in the mean or variance of quality characteristics. To monitor shifts in process mean and dispersion, Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) and Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) control charts are commonly employed. In our research, we investigated the influence of M.E on the Triple Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (TEWMA) control chart. We assessed the performance of the control chart using Average Run Length (ARL) as the evaluation metric. To compute the ARL properties, we adopted the Monte-Carlo simulation method. A comparison section has been made to check the performance efficiency of the control chart with the existing EWMA control chart. The implementation of a control chart on a real data set is also presented.

Abstract:Control charts are widely used to identify changes in a production process. Nonparametric or distribution-free charts can be useful when there is a lack of underlying process distribution. A nonparametric exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart based on sign test using ranked set sampling (RSS) is proposed to monitor the possible small shifts in the process mean. The performance of the proposed chart is evaluated in terms of average run length, median run length, and standard deviation of the run length distribution. It has been observed that the proposed version of the EWMA sign chart, using RSS shows better detection ability than that version of the EWMA sign chart and the parametric EWMA control chart using simple random sampling scheme. An application with real data-set is also provided to explain the proposal for practical considerations.

Abstract:Control charts are widely used to monitor the process parameters. Proper design structure and implementation of a control chart requires its in-control robustness, otherwise, its performance cannot be fairly observed. It is important to know whether a chart is sensitive to disturbances to the model (e.g. normality under which it is developed) or not. This study, explores the robustness of Mixed EWMA-CUSUM (MEC) control chart for location parameter under different non-normal and contaminated environments and compares it with its counterparts. The robustness of the MEC scheme and counterparts is evaluated by using the run length distributions, and for better assessment not only is in-control average run length (ARL) used, but also standard deviation of run length (SDRL) and different percentiles – that is, 5th, 50th and 95th– are considered. A careful insight is necessary in selection and application of control charts in non-normal and contaminated environments. It is observed that the in-control robustness performance of the MEC scheme is quite good in the case of normal, non-normal and contaminated normal distributions as compared with its competitor’s schemes.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on using memory-type control charts to detect small to moderate shifts in the process mean, particularly when the underlying distribution deviates from normal assumptions. To address this, robust estimators based on modified maximum likelihood estimation (MMLE) and Lloyd's BLUE estimators using generalized least square estimation (GLSE) are proposed. The proposed estimators utilize auxiliary information to enhance sensitivity against abrupt changes in the mean. Additionally, they play a crucial role in refining the precision of the estimated mean, contributing to a more accurate and nuanced estimation of the true mean. The efficiency and robustness of these estimators are compared with conventional ones from the literature. The proposed robust estimators are integrated into the design of the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart. Performance evaluation is based on average run lengths (ARLs), standard deviation, and percentiles of the run lengths. A real-life example illustrates the significance of the proposed estimators over conventional ones for non-normal distributions. The results demonstrate that the EWMA control chart with proposed estimators outperforms competitors in terms of ARLs, SDRLs, and percentiles. This study offers insights into using robust estimators to enhance memory-type control charts' performance for non-normal distributions.

Abstract:Control charts are important tools to monitor quality of products. One of useful applications is to monitor the proportion of non-conforming products. However, in practical applications, measurement error is ubiquitous and may occur due to false records or misclassification, which makes the observed proportion different from the underlying true proportion. It is also well-known that ignoring measurement error effects provides biases, and is expected that the resulting control charts may incur wrong detection. In this paper, we study this important problem and propose a valid method to correct for measurement error effects and obtain error-eliminated control chart for the proportion of non-conforming products. In addition, unlike traditional approaches, the corrected EWMA $p$-control chart provides asymmetric control limits and is flexible to handle the data with small sample size. Numerical results are conducted to justify the validity of the corrected EWMA $p$-control chart and verify the necessity of measurement error correction.

Abstract:Memory-type control charts are widely used for monitoring small to moderate shifts in the process parameter(s). In the present article, we present an exponentiated exponentially weighted moving average (Exp-EWMA) control chart that weights the past observations of a process using an exponentiated function. We evaluated the run-length characteristics of the Exp-EWMA chart via Monte Carlo simulations. A comparison study versus the CUSUM, EWMA and extended EWMA (EEWMA) charts under similar in-control (IC) run-length properties demonstrates that the Exp-EWMA chart is more effective for detecting small and, under certain circumstances, moderate shifts for both the zero-state and steady-state cases. Moreover, the Exp-EWMA chart has better zero-state out-of-control (OOC) performance than an EWMA chart with smoothing parameter equal to the limit to the infinity of the exponentiated function, while the two charts perform similarly for the steady-state case. Finally, it is shown that the Exp-EWMA chart is more IC robust than its competitors under several non-normal distributions. Abstract:In the context of big data-driven smart manufacturing, data is often characterized by high dimensionality, numerous variables, and complex associations. As a result, mixed continuous and categorical data are increasingly common. In the case of data that consist of a combination of continuous and categorical variables with unknown distributions, the application of traditional parametric control charts for monitoring purposes becomes challenging. Therefore, a novel nonparametric adaptive exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart using a self-starting strategy is proposed in this paper. First, the process of converting continuous data into categorical data is conducted using the data categorization method. The log-linear modeling is subsequently employed to investigate the relationships between various variables. Next, a nonparametric adaptive EWMA statistic is constructed to monitor mixed continuous and categorical data, and the self-starting strategy is employed to gradually expand the size of the in-control (IC) dataset and to update the parameters in real time. Then, a numerical simulation is conducted to compare the IC and out-of-control (OC) performance of the proposed chart with other control charts. According to the simulation result, it can be concluded that the proposed chart offers a more effective means of detecting shifts in the production process. Finally, a concrete illustration of an authentic dataset regarding red wine quality is provided to further clarify the effectiveness of the proposed control chart in monitoring mixed continuous and categorical data.

Abstract:The classical memory Exponential Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) and Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) control charts (CCs) are important to detect small‐to‐moderate sizes of shift in the process location and/or dispersion parameters. To make the memory control chart (CC) more efficient for broad range of shift, the score functions in particular Huber and Bi‐square functions are incorporated in the classical memory CCs. These score functions help to formulate the parameters of memory CCs and are called Adaptive EWMA (AEWMA) and Adaptive CUSUM (ACUSUM). The AEWMA and ACUSUM are capable to handle various sizes (i.e., small, moderate, and large) of shift. The aim of this study is to utilize Hampel function as the alternative of the mentioned score functions, and propose a new AEWMA CC, symbolized as AEWMAHample. To develop the proposed AEWMAHample CC, the standard EWMA statistic and Hampel function are incorporated in the classical EWMA CC structure. The proposed AEWMAHample CC is also efficient to handle certain sizes of shift in the process location parameter. Performance evaluation procedures, like average run length is considered for a particular shift. Similarly, the performance comparison index, relative average run length, and extra quadratic loss function are estimated over a range of shift. All these performance measures are calculated from run length (RL) characteristic of the proposed control chart. An algorithm in MATLAB is developed based on Monte Carlo simulation procedure to generate the RLs. Some existing control charts including EWMA, CUSUM, MEC, MCE, ACUSUMc(1) , ACUSUMc(2) , IACCUSUM, AEWMA∅hu , and AEWMA∅bs are taken for comparison reason. For specific sizes of shift, the proposed AEWMAHample CC reveals the superiority. Besides, to address the practical significance for practitioners and quality engineers, the real‐life and simulated data examples are considered.

Abstract:Statistical process control (SPC) methods are useful for improving or maintaining a manufacturing or service process in a stable and satisfactory state. Nowadays, in many industrial applications, it is necessary to simultaneously monitor more than two related quality variables of a process. Multivariate control charts are thus becoming an important research area. Using separate control charts to monitor related quality variables independently is very unreasonable and misleading. The problem of monitoring multivariate statistical process (MSPC) for several related quality variables is of current interest. So far in the literature, a few papers have discussed monitoring process dispersion for cases in which the process has a multivariate normal or non‐normal distribution. A new EWMA dispersion control chart is proposed to monitor the process covariance matrix. Moreover, the proposed new EWMA dispersion control chart is independent of the out‐of‐control process mean vector. It overcomes the problem in many existing covariance matrix control charts of assuming that there are no shifts in the process mean vector which, depending on the existence of shifts in mean, can lead to an increased false alarm rate. The derivation of the new EWMA dispersion control chart is illustrated and its out‐of‐control detection performance investigated. The proposed new EWMA dispersion control chart performs better than the existing control charts for detecting out‐of‐control process variances whether the covariances change or not. An example involving semi‐conductor data is adopted to demonstrate the application of the proposed new EWMA dispersion control chart.

Abstract:Control charts have been used to monitor product manufacturing processes for decades. The exponential distribution is commonly used to fit data in research related to healthcare and product lifetime. This study proposes an exponentially weighted moving average control chart with a variable sampling interval scheme to monitor the exponential process, denoted as a VSIEWMA-exp chart. The performance measures are investigated using the Markov chain method. In addition, an algorithm to obtain the optimal parameters of the model is proposed. We compared the proposed control chart with other competitors, and the results showed that our proposed method outperformed other competitors. Finally, an illustrative example with the data concerning urinary tract infections is presented.

Abstract:In high-quality processes, events related to non-quality rarely occur and the times between these events (TBE) is likely to follow a skewed distribution like the gamma distribution. In order to monitor TBE data, an Adaptive Exponential Weighted Moving Average (AEWMA) control chart is proposed in this paper. This chart is designed to perform well over a range of shifts instead of being only efficient for a particular shift. An extensive performance analysis shows that, for most shifts, the Average Run Length (ARL) of the proposed chart performs better than other already existing control charts. In order to help the quality practitioner, some guidelines for choosing the most effective scheme in practice are provided. Finally, an illustrative example of the proposed scheme is also presented. Abstract:In any manufacturing or service industry, substantial effort is made to keep a process under control. However, factors such as measurement error are bound to create distortions. Many researchers have studied the effect of measurement error on various types of control charts including the EWMA control chart. In this paper, we study the effect of measurement error on the competency of the extended EWMA control chart. We examine the performance of the chart in the case of a shift in mean taking into account the model with linear covariates. The consequence of making multiple measurements on each sampled unit is also investigated. Last but not the least, we examine the case of linearly increasing variance. Through a simulation study, we demonstrate that the performance of the chart for detecting a shift in the mean is substantially reduced in the presence of measurement error. The important finding, however, is that, in spite of the existence of measurement error, the EEWMA control chart performs better than the EWMA control chart. A practical example is provided to elucidate this finding.

Abstract:Multivariate time-between-events-and-amplitude (TBEA) data, which includes the time interval between two consecutive occurrences of the event as well as their amplitudes, is a common data type in manufacturing and service operations. Designing control charts to monitor TBEA data is of great significance to improve product quality. However, most TBEA control charts are typically constructed under the assumption that the data distribution is known. The monitoring performance of these parametric TBEA control charts may become less reliable when the assumed data distribution is unknown. To address this issue, we propose a nonparametric adaptive TBEA (NATBEA) control chart based on the antirank method and adaptive strategy. Firstly, a nonparametric monitoring statistic is constructed by using the antirank method. With using the adaptive strategy, a nonparametric adaptive EWMA control chart is designed to monitor TBEA data, and the monitoring performance of various shifts is improved. Then, we compare the monitoring performance of the NATBEA control chart and other TBEA control charts, and the numerical simulation results show that the NATBEA control chart has superior monitoring performance for various mean shifts with different data distributions. Finally, an example of a company's production failure demonstrates that the developed NATBEA control chart outperforms various conventional TBEA control charts by providing rapid alarms when the process is out of control.

Abstract:When the direction of a potential mean shift can be anticipated, the one-sided exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) X ̄ control chart using the truncation method (namely, the one-sided TEWMA X ̄ chart) is more efficient than those conventional one- and two-sided EWMA X ̄ schemes for process monitoring. Although attractive, there are no studies on designing the one-sided TEWMA X ̄ chart by taking measurement errors into account. In this context, we investigate the effect of measurement errors on the performance of the one-sided TEWMA X ̄ chart based on the linear covariate error model. Additionally, a Markov chain model is established to evaluate the run length properties of the scheme in the presence of measurement errors. Then, an optimal design procedure is developed for searching the optimal design parameters of the scheme. Based on these mentioned studies, several tables and figures are presented to evaluate the detecting performance of the scheme under different parameters of the linear covariate error model, and then a conventional one-sided EWMA X ̄ chart with reflecting boundary is introduced to further study the effect of the presence and absence of measurement errors on control chart comparison studies. Simulation results show that although the detecting performance of the proposed scheme is significantly affected by measurement errors, its performance is still superior to the classic competing chart under the same comparison conditions. Finally, an illustrative example is given to show the implementation of the recommended scheme.

In this article, we examined the effect of measurement error on an adaptive exponentially weighted moving average (AEWMA) control chart by using simple random sampling (SRS) and ranked set sampling (RSS) schemes. The linear covariate model is used to evaluate the control chart in the presence of measurement error. The case of multiple measurements and linear increasing variance is also investigated in the presence of measurement error. The average run length (<i>ARL</i>) and the standard deviation of run length (<i>SDRL</i>) are used as the performance measurement tool. Our results from the simulations and real data application demonstrated that measurement error affects the performance of control charts and multiple measurements are recommended to be used to avoid the effects of measurement error.
