Abstract:Background The number of publications on the subject of diversity, equity, and inclusion has surged in the last 5 years. However, a systematic review of this topic has not been published. Method Six top plastic surgery journals were queried from 2018 to 2023 using the search term “diversity.” Methods, conclusions, and recommendations were tabulated. Results A total of 138 publications were identified; 68 studies presented data suitable for analysis. All studies were retrospective. Currently, over 40% of plastic surgery residency applicants are women. The proportion of women in integrated plastic surgery residents is now 43%. In 2021 and 2022, the percentage of female first-year residents exceeded men. The percentage of female presenters at meetings (34%) is double the number in the workforce (17%). Twenty-five percent of academic faculty positions and 22% of program director positions are now held by women. Underrepresented minorities account for fewer than 10% of applicants to integrated plastic surgery residencies. Discussion The proportion of Black and Hispanic applicants to integrated plastic surgery residencies (6% and 8%, respectively) mirrors the proportion of Black and Hispanic medical students (7% and 6%, respectively). Numerous recommendations have been made to increase the proportion of underrepresented minorities in plastic surgery programs. Conclusions The representation of women in plastic surgery has increased dramatically. A lack of Hispanics and Blacks reflects a small pool of applicants, as opposed to a “leaky pipeline.”

Abstract:BACKGROUND As the US demographic evolves, surgical fields must adapt to ensure equitable healthcare. Healthcare disparities notably affect minority populations, with communities of color often facing physician shortages and higher rates of diseases such as coronary disease, stroke, and cancer. Research shows that minority physicians significantly improve patient satisfaction and outcomes in underserved communities, highlighting the need for increased physician diversity to enhance cultural competency and patient centered care. Data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) reveals minimal increases in underrepresented minorities (URM) in surgical residency and academic careers over the past thirty-six years, with little change URM applicants and matriculants in the nine surgical specialties recognized by the American College of Surgeons from 2010 to 2018. OBJECTIVE This review aims to critically evaluate the current landscape of racial and gender diversity in six out of the nine defined surgical specialties (general surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and vascular surgery) in the US. DESIGN We conducted a comprehensive literature review to assess of the state of diversity within surgical specialties in the United States. By analyzing the benefits of diversity in surgical fields, evaluating the effectiveness of various diversity programs and initiatives, examining the comparative diversity between surgical subspecialties, and assessing the impact of diversity on patient outcomes, our aim is to highlight the critical importance of enhancing diversity in surgical fields. RESULTS While nuances in representation and diversity vary across surgical specialties, all fields persistently exhibit underrepresentation of certain racial/ethnic groups and persistent gender disparities. These disparities manifest throughout various phases, including in residency, and in the recruitment and retention of URM individuals in surgery and surgical subspecialties. While interventions over the past decade have contributed to improving diversity in surgical fields, significant disparities persist. Limitations include the time required for recent interventions to show significant impacts and the inability of established interventions to eliminate disparities. CONCLUSIONS Despite the clear benefits, diversity within surgical specialties remains an uphill battle. Addressing the diversity gap in surgical fields is crucial for improving patient outcomes, healthcare access, and workplace environments, requiring strategies such as targeted recruitment, mentorship programs, and addressing systemic biases. This review highlights the undeniable imperative for change and serve a call to action.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The lack of diversity among applicants successfully matching into integrated plastic surgery residency continues to be a topic of significant discussion, yet substantial improvements in representation remain elusive. This article aims to highlight the systemic barriers contributing to the decline in diverse plastic surgery trainees. DESIGN This perspective summarizes current and existing challenges in improving recruitment efforts of underrepresented in medicine (URiM) trainees and those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. CONCLUSIONS While acknowledging current DEI initiatives, the authors point out those underappreciated modifiable and nonmodifiable obstacles that perpetuate the lack of equity and inclusivity in the match process. We emphasize the importance of continued commitment from program directors and chairs to these initiatives and its generational augmentative effects on achieving true and lasting diversity and equity.

Abstract:In this article, we examine the 60-year history of diversity efforts within the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan (UofM) in the context of national trends. We describe the experiences of pioneering Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) and female graduates of the program. James Norris, MD, and Christine Sullivan, MD, were the first URiM and female graduates from UofM in 1974 and 1989, respectively. Currently, women constitute over one-half the plastic surgery trainees at UofM, but URiM trainee representation remains limited. Dr. Adeyiza Momoh and Dr. Amy Alderman were the first URiM and female faculty members hired in 2011 and 2004, respectively. At present, there are four URiM and seven female faculty members in the Section. With a shared vision, supportive leadership, and motivation to change, faculty diversity has increased substantially. Additional strategies, including ongoing pipeline programs in medicine and science for URiM and women, are needed to further increase workforce diversity in plastic surgery. Abstract:Background: The racial diversity portrayed in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) media is an important indicator of an inclusive environment for potential patients. To evaluate the degree to which PRS websites demonstrate inclusivity, we assessed the racial composition of both patients and plastic surgeons depicted on the most visited academic and private PRS websites to determine the extent to which racial diversity is represented. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in September 2023. The 10 most visited websites in each state were identified. Sociodemographic characteristics including race and sex of patients and plastic surgeons, as well as the type of practice, were collected. Race was classified according to individuals' Fitzpatrick Phototypes into White and non-White. Differences in patient and surgeon representation were compared to the 2020 US Census and the 2020 ASPS demographics using χ 2 tests. Subgroup analyses were conducted to identify differences by type of practice and region. Results: We analyzed a total of 2,752 patients from 462 websites belonging to 930 plastic surgeons. PRS websites were predominantly from private practices (93%). Regarding patient representation, 92.6% were female, 7.4% were male, 87.6% were White, and 12.4% were non-White. The surgeon population on the studied webpages was 75.1% male, 92.1% White, and 7.8% non-White. Statistically significant differences were found in the patient population when compared to the 2020 national ( P < 0.001) and regional ( P < 0.001) US Census demographics and the 2020 ASPS Statistics Report ( P < 0.001). Although minority representation was significantly higher on academic websites compared to private practice (22.9% vs. 12.1%; P = 0.007), both were significantly lower than the percentage of minority patients undergoing PRS. Conclusions: This study illuminates racial disparities in the representation of racial groups among patients and plastic surgeons in the most frequented plastic surgery websites. Moreover, it underscores the imperative to bolster racial diversity within the digital content of both private and academic PRS websites. Greater racial representation can foster a more inclusive perception of the plastic surgery field, which may potentially broaden access to care and enrich the professional landscape.

Abstract:In 1993, the National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act mandated increasing minority and women enrollment in clinical trials (CTs). This study aimed to investigate trends in race and ethnicity enrollment and reporting in US plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) CT.METHODS: A comprehensive systematic review was performed. All CTs in PRS from 2012 to 2022 were included. To assess racial and ethnic representation within CTs, a random-effects meta-analysis of proportion was conducted to pool the prevalence of the binomial data.RESULTS: A total of 3609 studies were initially identified in the search strategy, with 154 later classified as CTs in PRS. Only 36 met the eligibility criteria for reporting race and ethnicity and were included in the analysis. A total of 7281 participants were included: 446 (6.1%) males and 6835 (93.9%) females. From CTs that correctly reported race, the pooled prevalence of races were as follows: Whites 78% (95% confidence interval [CI] 73-82%), Black or African Americans 8% (95% CI 5-11%), Asians 1% (95% CI <1-2%), American Indians <1% (95% CI <1-<1%), and Pacific Islanders <1% (95% CI <1-<1%). From the studies that reported ethnicity correctly, the pooled prevalence of Hispanics was 7% (95% CI 5-9%), and Non-Hispanics was 12% (<1-38%).CONCLUSIONS: Disparities in minority representation were present among PRS CTs. This suggests clear limitations in generalizing PRS CT results to the population. Efforts to decrease the gap in minority enrollment and accurately report race and ethnicity are needed in all fields, including plastic surgery.

Abstract:Background: In the aftermath of COVID-19, the residency application process has largely remained in the virtual space, introducing a new challenge to prospective integrated plastic surgery residents. Many programs enhanced their online presence to address this challenge, but both programs and applicants are still limited to a virtual snapshot when determining "fit." An important influence of fit is the ability to racially, ethnically, and/or culturally identify with the program. The aims of this study are to: (1) better understand the online information that residency programs are making available to prospective applicants, (2) characterize the racial diversity of programs, and (3) investigate the effect of program leadership on racial diversity. Methods: A cross-sectional study of US integrated plastic surgery residency programs was performed in August 2022. Data on race were collected for residency program directors and resident cohorts and compared with self-reported data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Relationships between these groups were analyzed. Results: Racial data were collected on 82 program directors and their corresponding residency cohorts, representing a total of 1174 individuals. These data closely matched the AAMC data on race/ethnicity in plastic surgery programs. By race, the smallest percentage of resident groups are Black/African American (3.4%) and Hispanic (4.2%). Though not statistically significant, more residents of a given race are in programs with a director of the same race. Conclusions: Online information about residency programs and their cohorts is robust. The racial diversity of a residency cohort is positively associated with racial diversity of program directors.

Abstract:Orthopaedic surgery has historically been one of the least diverse fields in medicine in the U.S. Despite having been declared a critical issue by the American Orthopaedic Association, a lack of diversity and inclusion across all metrics remains a persistent problem. In order to balance representation within orthopaedic surgery, a multiyear and multilevel approach should be considered across the life cycle of a surgeon. Talented individuals from diverse backgrounds must be identified and given early exposure to orthopaedic surgery. They must be nurtured, mentored, and retained. Representation at the medical student, resident, and faculty level is vital to ensuring diversity across the next generation of surgeons.We cannot alter representation within orthopaedics unless we broaden the candidate selection pool. Medical school classes provide the selection pool for residency, residency provides the candidates for fellowship, fellowships provide the candidates for employment, and employment provides the pool for promotion to leadership positions. Through each progression, there is a loss of underrepresented applicants, which leads to a lack of balanced representation in orthopaedic surgery. With stronger efforts to identify and retain individuals at each phase of a surgeon's career, we hope to mitigate the loss of talented and diverse individuals from this field.We challenge the paradigm of increasing diversity that focuses only on the resident selection level. Instead, efforts must begin at the medical student level. Efforts for early and meaningful exposure to the field through a musculoskeletal curriculum and rotations as well as connection through mentorship and sponsorship are vital for retention. At each ascending level of education, reinvestment in each individual is critical. Exposure, mentorship, retention, and promotion should lead to a more diverse and rich future. To achieve this, deliberate and longitudinal action should be instituted to increase diversity within orthopaedics.

Abstract:Synthetic GH-RH-1-44 was administered in a dose of 1 mcg/1 Kg to 3 normal adolescents with short stature and to 17 patients with GHD (hGH response to ITT and clonidine < 2 ng/ml). In the normal subjects the peak response of plasma hGH to GH-RH was 100, 20 and 19 ng/ml. In the GHD patients 3 patterns of response were observed: a) Good response (n=5), 18±1.9 ng/ml, i.e. GHD of hypothalamic origin; b) Partial response (n=4), 4.25±0.4 ng/ml, i.e. GHD of hypothalamic origin, possibly with a pituitary component; c) No response (n=8), 1.3±0.3 ng/ml, i.e. GHD of pituitary origin. It remains to be established whether a partial response of GH to one bolus of GH-RH may in certain patients be due to a longstanding GH-RH deficiency, with the possibility of its unmasking following repeated injections and the consequent synthesis of sufficient GH for its release.

Abstract:Background Increasing the diversity of plastic surgery trainees is an important step in providing optimal care for our increasingly diverse patient populations. Given that information presented on residency programs' websites can strongly influence applicants' decisions to apply to or rank a program, demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) on program websites may aid in recruiting applicants with URM background. Methods Using 8 DEI-related criteria, we evaluated the websites of 103 plastic surgery residency programs for the presence of DEI-related content during the month of June 2022. Each program was evaluated by 2 individual graders. We analyzed the data with confirmatory factor analysis in R using the Lavaan package. Results On average, programs fulfilled 2.1 ± 1.6 of the metrics with a range of 0–7 fulfilled per program. Our model revealed that the criteria were a high-quality ( P < 0.0001) measure of DEI-related metrics. There was a significant association between program size and presence of DEI-related criteria (linear 0.039; quadratic −0.005; both P < 0.01), such that mid-sized programs (16–18 residents) had the highest quality of DEI advertising compared to both small and large programs. Programs associated with a USNWR Top 20 Hospital were less likely to achieve high level of DEI-related criteria than other programs ( P < 0.0001). Conclusion Mid-sized programs had greater DEI quality on their websites, while smaller and larger programs similarly had poorer assessed quality. There is room for all programs to improve the presence of DEI-related material on their websites, especially related to care of transgender populations.

Abstract:In today's world, departments of anesthesiology and professional organizations are rightfully expected to have racial, ethnic, and gender diversity. Diversity and inclusiveness are considered important contributors to an effective and collaborative work environment by promoting excellence in patient care, education, and research. This has been re-emphasized in the racial reckoning in the summer of 2020, and the ongoing health care disparities manifested by the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Moreover, the negative consequences of a lack of diversity and inclusion in health care have been shown to impact recruitment, retention, and the economic well-being of academic departments. In the present article, we review the current state of diversity in anesthesiology departments and professional organizations in the United States. We discuss strategies and important approaches to further enhance diversity to promote an inclusive perioperative work environment.

Diversity Within the Field of Orthopedic Sports Medicine: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Orthopedic surgery is among the least diverse specialties in medicine. This systematic review analyzes gender, racial, and ethnic diversity within orthopedic sports medicine and aims to raise awareness and provide guidance for future strategies that support underrepresented minorities in medicine (URMs) and women in joining the orthopedic sports medicine workforce. We hypothesize that at all tiers of training, there is a lack of gender, racial, and ethnic parity in academic rank, leadership positions, and research productivity. Methods: A search of all published literature in the English language from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Scopus databases, between January 1, 2010, and August 18, 2023, was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Included studies presented demographics regarding diversity within orthopedic sports medicine and provided trends in applicants, attendings, leadership, and/or research. Bias was assessed using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) study checklist. Results: Thirteen studies published between 2016 and 2023 with STROBE scores 15.5 to 21.5 (70.5% to 97.7%) met criteria, and pertinent data were extracted. The percent of female orthopedic sports medicine surgeons from 2010 to 2019 increased from 5% (n = 138) to 6% (n = 206) with a compound annual growth rate of 0.2% (r2 = 0.97; p < 0.001). Females and URMs are underrepresented at the highest levels of orthopedic sports medicine leadership including department chair (female: 0% [n = 0]), division chief (female: 4% [n = 4]; URM: 3% [n = 3]), and fellowship director (female: 3.3% [n = 3]; URM: 4.4% [n = 4]). Studies from prominent orthopedic sports medicine journals (American Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Sports Health) show a 12.1% increase in female involvement in orthopedic sports medicine research from 1972 to 2018; however, this increase captures 59.3% (n = 2,953) females with degrees other than an MD. Conclusions: Although increasingly more females and underrepresented minorities are joining orthopedic sports medicine, the rate of diversification remains slow and current involvement in leadership and research is minimal. Targeted efforts aimed at increasing research opportunities and inspiring interest through mentorship for URMs and females in orthopedics is essential to drive change toward parity. Abstract:Background: Although diversity has improved across certain orthopaedic subspecialties, enhancing diversity within spine surgery has remained a challenge. We aimed to investigate the current state of sex, racial, and ethnic diversity among academic orthopaedic spine surgeons in the United States. Methods: In January 2024, a cross-sectional analysis of orthopaedic spine surgery faculty in the United States was conducted using the Doximity database to identify eligible surgeons. Fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeons (professor, associate professor, and assistant professor) who graduated residency between 1990 and 2022 were included. Race, sex, academic rank, residency year of graduation, and H-Index scores were recorded using publicly available information from faculty profile pages and the Doximity database. Results: Four hundred fifty-two spine faculty were included in the analysis: 95.1% men and 4.84% women. Across race and ethnicity, 315 surgeons (69.7%) were White, 111 (24.6%) Asian, 15 (3.32%) Black or African American, and 11 (2.43%) Hispanic or Latino or of Spanish origin. Of the 101 professor-level surgeons, 3 (2.97%) were Black men. Among female professors, none were Black, Asian, or Hispanic/Latino. No Hispanic or Latino female professors, associate professors, or assistant professors were identified. The sex and race/ethnicity demographics that have increased in percentage over time include White women (0.92% to 6.08%), Asian men (11.0% to 26.5%), Asian women (0% to 1.66%), and Hispanic/Latino men (1.83% to 3.87%). The surgeon demographic groups that demonstrated minimal fluctuations over time included Black men, Black women, and Hispanic/Latino women. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that underrepresentation among academic spine surgeons remains an ongoing challenge that warrants increased attention. Enhancing the representation of Black and Hispanic men, as well as Black, Asian, and Hispanic women, in spine surgery requires a deliberate effort at every level of orthopaedic training.
How Do Plastic Surgery Program's Websites Feature Diversity and Inclusion Elements? An Analysis of 89 Integrated Plastic Surgery Programs' Websites

Abstract:Introduction: Plastic surgery residency programs leverage their websites as platforms for promoting their commitment to diversity and inclusion to potential candidates. Medical students who are seeking residency positions, including individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, place significant importance on the alignment of program culture and diversity. The authors assessed how these programs showcased diversity and inclusion efforts on their websites. Methods: The authors analyzed 89 plastic surgery integrated residency program websites for the presence of 12 elements, (1) nondiscrimination, (2) diversity and inclusion statement, (3) community resources, (4) extended resident biographies, (5) faculty biographies, (6) faculty photos, (7) resident photos, (8) additional financial resources for trainees, (9) wellness, (10) mental health resources, (11) health disparities/community engagement, and (12) presence of a diversity council. Additionally, we examined the presence of these 12 elements by geographic region (West, Midwest, South, and Northeast). Our analyzed use chi-squared, t-tests, and Mann-Whitney U; significance level was p = 0.005. The independent plastic surgery programs were excluded, considering their websites were combined with the integrated-residency programs. Results: We reviewed 89 websites from February 9, 2024 until February 24, 2024 and on average had 6.32 ± 1.1 diversity and inclusion elements. Resident photos (n = 84, 94.4%), community resources (n = 55, 61.8%), faculty photos (n = 63, 70.8%), and additional financial resources for trainees (n = 56, 62.9%) were the most common. The least common diversity and inclusion elements were diversity councils (n = 12, 13.5%), wellness resources (n = 36, 40.4%), and diversity and inclusion statements (n = 42, 47.2%). The primary analysis revealed that programs with higher number of incoming positions (3 or more) (5.2 ± 1.8) had a significantly higher diversity and inclusion scores when compared to programs with lower number of incoming positions (3.6 ± 2.1) (p = 0.002). Furthermore, based on the geographic regions from the U.S. Census, there was no significant difference between geographic regions. Conclusions: Characterizing the number of program websites and quantifying the number of diversity elements on each site provide an opportunity for more residency programs to further commit to diversity and inclusion. Displaying different diversity and inclusive initiatives on program websites may attract more diverse applicants, particularly individuals from underrepresented populations in medicine.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Multiple investigations in the past 50 years have documented a lack of racial/ethnic and gender diversity in the orthopaedic surgery workforce when compared with other specialties. Studies in other industries suggest that diversification of leadership can help diversify the underlying workforce. This study investigates changes in racial/ethnic and gender diversity of orthopaedic surgery leadership from 2007 to 2019 and compares leadership diversity to that of other surgical and nonsurgical specialties, specifically in terms of chairpersons and program directors.METHODS: Demographic data were collected from The Journal of the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges. Aggregate data were utilized to determine the racial, ethnic, and gender composition of academic leadership for 8 surgical and nonsurgical specialties in 2007 and 2019. Comparative analysis was conducted to identify changes in diversity among chairpersons between the 2 years. Furthermore, current levels of diversity in orthopaedic leadership were compared with those of other specialties.RESULTS: A comparative analysis of diversity among program directors revealed that orthopaedic surgery had significantly lower minority representation (20.5%) when compared with the nonsurgical specialties (adjusted p < 0.01 for all) and, with the exception of neurological surgery, had the lowest proportion of female program directors overall, at 9.0% (adjusted p < 0.001 for all). From 2007 to 2019, orthopaedic surgery experienced no change in minority representation among chairpersons (adjusted p = 0.73) but a significant increase in female representation among chairpersons, from 0.0% (0 of 102) to 4.1% (5 of 122) (adjusted p = 0.04). Lastly, a significant decrease in minority and female representation was observed when comparing the diversity of 2019 orthopaedic faculty to orthopaedic leadership in 2019/2020 (p < 0.05 for all).CONCLUSIONS: Diversity in orthopaedic surgery leadership has improved on some key fronts, specifically in gender diversity among chairpersons. However, a significant decrease in minority and gender representation was observed between 2019 orthopaedic faculty and 2019/2020 orthopaedic leadership (p < 0.05), which was a trend shared by other specialties. These findings may suggest a more pervasive problem in diversity of medical leadership that is not only limited to orthopaedic surgery.

Abstract:Abstract Current literature demonstrates a lack of racial diversity in plastic surgery media. However, to our knowledge, no study has yet examined the racial diversity of Webpage content as if from a patient-search perspective. The objective of this study is to determine if there is a racial discrepancy between the US Census, American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics, and the media featuring implied patients on US plastic surgeons' Webpages from a patient-focused approach. A Google search was completed using the term “(state) plastic surgeon.” The first 10 relevant Web sites were collected for each state, and homepages were analyzed. In line with previous studies, the implied patients in media were classified into 1 of 6 skin tone categories: I, ivory; II, beige; III, light brown; IV, olive; V, brown; and VI, dark brown. These correlate to Fitzpatrick phototypes; however, the Fitzpatrick scale measures skin's response to UV exposure. Skin tone was used as a guide to measure racial representation in the media, with the caveat that skin tone does not absolutely correlate to racial identity. Categories I–III were further classified as “white” and IV–VI as “nonwhite.” These data were compared with the 2020 ASPS demographics report and US Census. Four thousand eighty individuals were analyzed from 504 Webpages, the majority of which were those of private practice physicians. A total of 91.62% of individuals were classified as “white” and 8.38% “nonwhite.” The distribution by category was as follows: I = 265, II = 847, III = 2626, IV = 266, V = 71, and VI = 5. Using χ 2 analyses, a statistically significant difference was found between the racial representation within this sample and that of the 2020 US Census nationally ( P < 0.001), regionally ( P < 0.001), and subregionally ( P < 0.001); the 2020 ASPS Cosmetic Summary Data ( P < 0.001); and the 2020 ASPS Reconstructive Summary Data ( P < 0.001). This study highlights the significant difference between racial representation on plastic surgeons' Webpages and the demographics of patients they serve. Further analyses should identify the impact of these representational disparities on patient care and clinical outcomes, as well as examine how best to measure racial diversity and disparities in patient-oriented media.

Abstract:Abstract Only 20% of the current plastic surgery workforce is female, but since 2022 most matched applicants in integrated plastic surgery programs have been women. The aim of this study was to examine current practice models among female plastic surgeons, including those outside of academia, as the field continues to evolve. In this study we surveyed female plastic surgeons in different practice models to elicit perspectives, career path advice, characterize and project trends, and provide recommendations for success. A 37-question survey focusing on demographics, practice models, career paths, desire for practice changes, and advice for women trainees was emailed to 1342 members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Aesthetic Society. Chi square analyses compared practice type characteristics (academia, employed roles, private practice), at a significance level of .05. Response rate was 53%. Most respondents were age 35-45, in solo practice, trained in traditional pathways, without fellowships, and lacked female mentors. Private practice surgeons were very satisfied in their career, employed surgeons were moderately satisfied, and academic surgeons were mildly satisfied. Academic surgeons reported a higher number of working hours (>60) and cases per month (20-30) than employed or private practice surgeons. Recommendations for success included seeking female mentorship and enhancing business skills and building a social media platform during training. Results highlight the importance of female mentorship and acquiring business skills, and indicate private practice leads to greater career satisfaction. Training programs should consider accounting for these factors to better promote women's success and improve equity in academic practice.
