Abstract:In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the addition of Disease X, a hypothetical infectious threat, to its blueprint list of priority diseases. In the construction of discourse that circulated following this announcement, conceptions of Disease X intersected with representations of Africa. In our article, we share a broad strokes analysis of internet narratives about Disease X and Africa in the six months before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (July–December 2019) and during its first six months (January–June 2020). Our analysis focuses on how the scientific concept of Disease X was applied by ‘non-experts’ to make meaning from risk, uncertainty, and response. These non-experts drew in parallel upon more general representations of power, fear, and danger. This research is particularly relevant at the time of writing, as online narratives about COVID-19 vaccination are shaping vaccine anxiety throughout the world by drawing upon similar conceptions of agency and inequality. Because Disease X in Africa still looms as a perceived future threat, considering the narratives presented in this paper can provide insight into how people create meaning when faced with a scientific concept, a global health crisis, and the idea that there are other crises yet to come.

Abstract:We are in the middle of an unprecedented pandemic named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO) which is caused by a novel coronavirus. The novelty of the virus and its disease is so new that the entire world is experiencing its consequences on various aspects. The pandemic is still unfolding and creating some new patterns around us. Besides the buzzword, that is, the vaccine is far from our sight. So naturally, we have to look for existing solutions if they can be implemented until the vaccine arrives. From Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to Bacillus Calmette Guèrin (BCG) all are being used in trials whether they can be pre-vaccine medicine or not. The variable effect on individual sections of the population has to be studied to deliver a targeted response, especially in resource lacking countries. In addition to these medical problems like social distress and quarantine measures which are taking a toll on people's minds, another unwarranted problem of Infodemic has struck us. So, this paper will review the ongoing steps and challenges and how we can efficiently respond to them to conquer this pandemic.

Abstract:Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical need for comprehensive preparedness strategies for future pandemics, particularly those caused by unknown pathogens, or Disease X. Study Design: Our systematic review examined current literature on COVID-19 risk factors, identifying significant gaps and inconsistencies in data reporting. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted including all English language published retrospective and prospective observational studies which documented clinical outcomes of COVID-19 in adult patients, on Ovid MEDLINE(R) and Epub databases (December 2019 to March 2023). Results: The search yielded 440 articles of which 29 were included in the systematic review. We identified major risk factors for severe outcomes. However, inconsistencies in reporting comorbidities, age, disease control levels, medication use, vaccination status, and variant type, limited our analysis. In many publications, this information was not included. Additionally, variations in public attitudes, knowledge, and behaviours regarding COVID-19 vaccines further complicated resource distribution. We propose the CLARITY model to address these gaps by standardizing risk factor reporting, encompassing detailed comorbidity profiles, disease control metrics, age analyses, medication and vaccination data, and variant-specific information. Conclusions: Implementing the CLARITY model could improve preparedness and response strategies for Disease X, enabling healthcare professionals and systems to allocate resources more effectively and mitigate the impact of future pandemics. This review underscores the necessity for a coordinated global effort to enhance pandemic preparedness through improved data reporting and risk stratification.

Abstract:Infectious diseases cause more than 13 million deaths a year, worldwide. Globalization, urbanization, climate change, and ecological pressures have significantly increased the risk of a global pandemic. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic-the first since the H1N1 outbreak more than a decade ago and the worst since the 1918 influenza pandemic-illustrates these matters vividly. More than 47M confirmed infections and 1M deaths have been reported worldwide as of November 4, 2020 and the global markets have lost trillions of dollars. The pandemic will continue to have significant disruptive impacts upon the United States and the world for years; its secondary and tertiary impacts might be felt for more than a decade. An effective strategy to reduce the national and global burden of pandemics must: 1) detect timing and location of occurrence, taking into account the many interdependent driving factors; 2) anticipate public reaction to an outbreak, including panic behaviors that obstruct responders and spread contagion; 3) and develop actionable policies that enable targeted and effective responses.

Abstract:COVID-19 has disrupted everyday life worldwide and is the first disease event since the 1918 H1N1 Spanish influenza (flu) pandemic to demand an urgent global healthcare response. There has been much debate on whether the damage of COVID-19 is due predominantly to the pathogen itself or our response to it. We compare SARS-CoV-2 against three other major pandemics (1347 Black Death, 1520's new world smallpox outbreaks, and 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic) over the course of 700 years to unearth similarities and differences in pathogen, social and medical context, human response and behavior, and long-term social and economic impact that should be used to shape COVID-19 decision-making. We conclude that <100 years ago, pandemic disease events were still largely uncontrolled and unexplained. The extensive damage wreaked by historical pandemics on health, economy, and society was a function of pathogen characteristics and lack of public health resources. Though there remain many similarities in patterns of disease spread and response from 1300 onwards, the major risks posed by COVID-19 arise not from the pathogen, but from indirect effects of control measures on health and core societal activities. Our understanding of the epidemiology and effective treatment of this virus has rapidly improved and attention is shifting toward the identification of long-term control strategies that balance consideration of health in at risk populations, societal behavior, and economic impact. Policymakers should use lessons from previous pandemics to develop appropriate risk assessments and control plans for now-endemic COVID-19, and for future pandemics.
COVID-19: an 'extraterrestrial' disease?

Abstract:Background: Since the beginning of the pandemic, COVID-19 has been regarded as an exceptional disease. Control measures have exclusively focused on 'the virus', while failing to account for other biological and social factors that determine severe forms of the disease. Aim: We argue that although COVID-19 was initially considered a new challenge, justifying extraordinary response measures, this situation has changed - and so should our response. Main arguments: We now know that COVID-19 shares many features of common infectious respiratory diseases, and can now ascertain that SARS-CoV-2 has not suddenly presented new problems. Instead, it has exposed and exacerbated existing problems in health systems and the underlying health of the population. COVID-19 is evidently not an 'extraterrestrial' disease. It is a complex zoonotic disease, and it needs to be managed as such, following long-proven principles of medicine and public health. Conclusion: A complex disease cannot be solved through a simple, magic-bullet cure or vaccine. The heterogeneity of population profiles susceptible to developing a severe form of COVID-19 suggests the need to adopt varying, targeted measures that are able to address risk profiles in an appropriate way. The critical role of comorbidities in disease severity calls for short-term, virus-targeted interventions to be complemented with medium-term policies aimed at reducing the burden of comorbidities, as well as mitigating the risk of transition from infection to disease. Strategies required include upstream prevention, early treatment, and consolidation of the health system.

Abstract:Infectious diseases manifesting in the form of epidemics or pandemics do not only cause devastating impacts on public health systems but also disrupt the functioning of the socio-economic structure. Further, risks associated with pandemics and epidemics become exacerbated with coincident compound hazards. This study aims to develop a framework that captures key elements and components of epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response systems, focusing on a multi-hazard context. A systematic literature review was used to collect data through peer-reviewed journal articles using three electronic databases, and 17 experts were involved in the validation. Epidemiological surveillance and early detection, risk and vulnerability assessments, preparedness, prediction and decision making, alerts and early warning, preventive strategies, control and mitigation, response, and elimination were identified as key elements associated with epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response systems in a multi-hazard context. All elements appear integrated within three interventional phases: upstream, interface, and downstream. A holistic approach focusing on all interventional phases is required for preparedness and response to pandemics and epidemics to counter their cascading and systemic effects. Further, a paradigm shift in the preparedness for multi-hazards during an epidemic or pandemic is essential due to the multiple challenges posed by concurrent hazards.

Abstract:Background and aims: Disease X represents the possibility that an unidentified infection may spread globally and start a pandemic. This study explored various aspects of emerging non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) as a possible source of "Disease X," an enigmatic agent declared by the World Health Organization, and discussed the potential impact of NPEVs on global public health. Methods: In this perspective article, we collected information from publicly available sources such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. We used NPEVs, viral diseases, pandemics, and zoonotic diseases as keywords. We extracted information from the most relevant articles. Results: Notable outbreaks caused by NPEVs include enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) and enterovirus A71 (EV-A71), among many others. With a focus on therapeutic and preventative components, alternate modes of therapy, and the development of broad-spectrum antivirals, this analysis looks at the origin, epidemiology, genetic alterations, transmission dynamics, and disease pathophysiology of NPEVs. The information presented in the review indicates the current risk assessment of NPEVs, taking into account the following factors: the need for research and therapeutic interventions, the diversity of clinical manifestations, the impact of genetic variability on virulence, the persistence of emergence despite vaccination efforts, recurrent outbreaks, and the global impact of these viruses. Conclusion: There is a possibility that NPEVs could trigger global pandemics based on their zoonotic origins and urges for complete readiness, continuous research, cooperation, and a comprehensive strategy to combat emerging infectious diseases in a constantly changing global environment. It is peak time to acknowledge how important it is to abide by safety and health laws to prevent these illnesses.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Infectious diseases are emerging and re-emerging far more frequently than many appreciate. In the past two decades alone, there have been numerous outbreaks (e.g., Ebola, chikungunya, Zika, and Mpox) and pandemics (i.e., swine flu and coronavirus disease 2019) with profound effects to public health, the economy, and society at large. Rather than view these in isolation, there are important lessons pertaining to how best to contend with future outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases. Those lessons span definition (i.e., what constitutes a pandemic), through deficiencies in surveillance, data collection and reporting, the execution of research in a rapidly changing environment, the nuances of study design and hierarchy of clinical evidence, triage according to clinical need as supply chains become overwhelmed, and the challenges surrounding forecasting of outbreaks. Understanding those lessons and drawing on both the successes and failures of the past are imperative if we are to overcome the challenges of outbreak/pandemic responsiveness.

Abstract:The coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which originated at Wuhan, China in December 2019, has been named as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the perspective of the author and many others, it is much more than a health crisis. In addition to its impact on human health, it also can be characterized as an issue having several aspects including social, political, economic, human rights, logistical and global peace and security. The outbreak affects all segments of the population and is particularly damaging to the vulnerable groups including poor, immunosuppressed, with terminal illnesses, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions, persons with disabilities, elderly living alone and displaced people. Evidence indicates that the health and economic impacts of the outbreak are being borne disproportionately by poor and many in middle class with their misery compounded by the strict actions taken by the governments in good faith. It is also becoming clear that the effect of COVID-19 upon systems brings an enormous challenge, since in many situations the systems do not have organized plan to face a pandemic of this nature, but it can be expected the resilient human race to come up with various innovations, mainly technological to face the current challenge despite apocalyptical predictions.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic raised the need to prepare for the possibility of a new pandemic stemming from an unknown "Disease X." The extent to which an epidemic will spread depends on the complex interplay of various human and environmental factors. Previous studies focused on analyzing the effects of individual parameters on disease transmission. Based on empirical COVID-19 data from South Korea, we develop a comprehensive modeling framework incorporating the population density, inter-city human mobility, the location of the initial outbreak, social distancing, and mass gathering events, with the primary goal to assess the transmission risks at a quantitative level. Systematic computations reveal the emergence of a group structure among all possible spreading scenarios: they are organized into three distinct groups with well-defined boundaries. This group structure underscores the importance of individualized risk assessment strategies for cities based on their unique characteristics, leading to intervention policies tailored to their specific circumstances.

Abstract:Background: The pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a timely reminder of the nature and impact of Public Health Emergencies of International Concern. As of 12 January 2022, there were over 314 million cases and over 5.5 million deaths notified since the start of the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic takes variable shapes and forms, in terms of cases and deaths, in different regions and countries of the world. The objective of this study is to analyse the variable expression of COVID-19 pandemic so that lessons can be learned towards an effective public health emergency response. Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods study to understand the heterogeneity of cases and deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Correlation analysis and scatter plot were employed for the quantitative data. We used Spearman's correlation analysis to determine relationship strength between cases and deaths and socio-economic and health systems. We organized qualitative information from the literature and conducted a thematic analysis to recognize patterns of cases and deaths and explain the findings from the quantitative data. Results: We have found that regions and countries with high human development index have higher cases and deaths per million population due to COVID-19. This is due to international connectedness and mobility of their population related to trade and tourism, and their vulnerability related to older populations and higher rates of non-communicable diseases. We have also identified that the burden of the pandemic is also variable among high- and middle-income countries due to differences in the governance of the pandemic, fragmentation of health systems, and socio-economic inequities. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates that every country remains vulnerable to public health emergencies. The aspiration towards a healthier and safer society requires that countries develop and implement a coherent and context-specific national strategy, improve governance of public health emergencies, build the capacity of their (public) health systems, minimize fragmentation, and tackle upstream structural issues, including socio-economic inequities. This is possible through a primary health care approach, which ensures provision of universal and equitable promotive, preventive and curative services, through whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has been characterized by unprecedented rates of spatio-temporal spread. Here, we summarize the main events in the pandemic's timeline and evaluate what has been learnt by the public health community. We also discuss the implications for future public health policy and, specifically, the practice of epidemic control. We critically analyze this ongoing pandemic's timeline and contrast it with the 2002–2003 SARS outbreak. We identify specific areas (e.g., pathogen identification and initial reporting) wherein the international community learnt valuable lessons from the SARS outbreak. However, we also identify the key areas where international public health policy failed leading to the exponential spread of the pandemic. We outline a clear agenda for improved pandemic control in the future.

Abstract:<p>The Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) hasn't seen the dawn since its emergence, however waxing and waning has resulted in the emergence of deadly variants. The effects of pandemic have not been limited to its virulence, but have rather conferred multiple collateral effects, especially in developing countries; thereby, designating it as a SYNDEMIC. The same culminated in neglect of non-COVID-19 conditions like tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Besides being the prognostic factor for severe COVID-19, these infections in hidden pockets served as reservoir for emergence of the deadly Omicron. Another significant impact of this juxtaposition was on the delivery of healthcare services for TB and HIV. <p> The unanticipated COVID-19 pandemic turned the path of ongoing progress of elimination programs. Direct consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic were pronounced on diagnosis, treatment, and services for patients with TB and HIV. Essential TB services were reallocated to the COVID-19 rapid response task force. However, despite escalating the tribulations, this triple burden has simultaneously taught lessons to escalate the progress of halted programs. The pandemic has catalyzed an unusual level of collaboration among scientists, which can be exploited for TB and HIV. Fast-track diagnostics, digitalization, contact tracing, and vaccine development have enabled world to envision the same for TB/HIV.</p>.

Abstract:Just when the world started to adapt to the 'new normal' amid the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID‐19) pandemic, the world is witnessing the wrath of another viral disease, the monkeypox virus (MPXV). The virus is endemic to African countries, where several outbreaks have been reported in the past. However, the present cases have been reported in non‐endemic countries worldwide. Although MPX is considered to be a self‐limiting disease, recent reports on its incidence have proved otherwise. The 2022 multi‐country MPX outbreak has drawn the attention of global surveillance organizations and epidemiologists to trace its origin, however, there are existing gaps regarding the animal reservoirs, biological implications, and management of MPX. In view of the recent events, the World Health Organization (WHO) has also declared the ongoing MPX outbreak a global health emergency. Hence, the geographically expanding MPXV poses a significant threat to human health and public safety. In this review, the latest insights into the biology of MPXV have been provided by discussing its biological implications on human health, changing epidemiological footprint, and presently available intervention strategies. Abstract:The emergence and spread of infectious diseases with pandemic potential occurred regularly throughout history. Major pandemics and epidemics such as plague, cholera, flu, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have already afflicted humanity. The world is now facing the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Many infectious diseases leading to pandemics are caused by zoonotic pathogens that were transmitted to humans due to increased contacts with animals through breeding, hunting and global trade activities. The understanding of the mechanisms of transmission of pathogens to humans allowed the establishment of methods to prevent and control infections. During centuries, implementation of public health measures such as isolation, quarantine and border control helped to contain the spread of infectious diseases and maintain the structure of the society. In the absence of pharmaceutical interventions, these containment methods have still been used nowadays to control COVID-19 pandemic. Global surveillance programs of water-borne pathogens, vector-borne diseases and zoonotic spillovers at the animal-human interface are of prime importance to rapidly detect the emergence of infectious threats. Novel technologies for rapid diagnostic testing, contact tracing, drug repurposing, biomarkers of disease severity as well as new platforms for the development and production of vaccines are needed for an effective response in case of pandemics.

Abstract:The world is threatened with a novel corona virus (COVID-19) which has posed an unpredictable challenge to the public health workforce. It originated from the Wuhan City of China and spread across the globe creating havoc among the public and healthcare workers which led to WHO declaring it to be pandemic. Transmission of this virus is through symptomatic and asymptomatic patients in the form of fomites produced while coughing or sneezing. This has led to a global crisis subsequently leading to the scarce availability of health care resources such as personal protective equipment, ventilators, ICU beds, medication. Healthcare workers have been a vital human resource in providing treatment and assistance to the infected patients though they were facing a high risk of themselves getting infected by the coronavirus. They suffered from fatigue, physical, and psychological violence as they tend to work for longer hours. Detection of infected patients was implemented, as the widely used RT- PCR method was accurate but took more time for the definite results. Hence, for quick results and to detect more number of infected patients, the rapid antigen test was conducted. Therefore, this virus has resulted in a greater impact on the economy and social development and this article of many infected countries.

Abstract:Epidemics and pandemics have ravaged human life since time. To combat these, novel ideas have always been created and deployed by humanity, with varying degrees of success. At this very moment, the COVID-19 pandemic is the singular global health crisis. Now, perhaps for the first time in human history, almost the whole of humanity is experiencing some form of hardship as a result of one invisible pathogen. This once again entails novel ideas for quick eradication, healing and recovery, whether it is healthcare, banking, travel, education or any other. For efficient policy-making, clear trends of past, present and future are vital for policy-makers. With the global impacts of COVID-19 so severe, equally important is the analysis of correlations between disease spread and various socio-economic and environmental factors. Furthermore, all of these need to be presented in an integrated manner in real-time to facilitate efficient policy making. To address these issues, in this study, we report results on our development and deployment of a web-based integrated real-time operational dashboard as an important decision support system for COVID-19. In our study, we conducted data-driven analysis based on available data from diverse authenticated sources to predict upcoming consequences of the pandemic through rigorous modeling and statistical analyses. We also explored correlations between pandemic spread and important socio-economic and environmental factors. Furthermore, we also present how outcomes of our work can facilitate efficient policy making in this critical hour.
