Abstract:Multimedia processing is becoming increasingly important with a range of applications. Existing approaches for processing multimedia data can be broadly classified into two categories, namely: (i) microprocessors with extended media processing capabilities; and (ii) dedicated implementations (ASICs). The complexity, variety of techniques and tools associated with multimedia processing points to the opportunities for reconfigurable computing devices which will be able to adapt the underlying hardware dynamically in response to changes in the input data or processing environment. The paper proposes a novel approach to design a dynamically reconfigurable processor by performing hardware software co-design for a media processing application. As an example, the analysis of the shape coding module of MPEG-4 is chosen to demonstrate the potential for reconfigurability.

Abstract:SO2 emission has become an important issue due to its harmful impact on human health and the ecological environment. Adsorption separation is an energy-efficient technology to capture SO2, but it suffers from competitive adsorption of CO2. Here, we present a strategy to improve the separation performance of porous adsorbents through the fabrication of mixed-matrix adsorbents. By the introduction of a perm-selective polymer (P-(D-[VImC(6)]-Br)) as the matrix to enclose anion-pillared microporous materials (SIFSIX-3-Ni), CO2 molecules were selectively blocked, while the SO2 molecules could still permeate the polymer matrix and access the porous particles of SIFSIX-3-Ni. As a result, a high SO2 (0.2%)/CO2 (10%) uptake ratio of 32 at 298 K and 1 bar and a high SO2 uptake capacity of 0.67 mmol g(-1) at 0.002 bar were achieved for the mixed-matrix adsorbents of SIFSIX-3-Ni@PIL-1/1. The strategy for fabricating a perm-selective matrix around the porous adsorbent particles to improve the adsorption performance is generally applicable to other porous adsorbents.
High‐throughput Computational Screening of Porous Polymer Networks for Natural Gas Sweetening Based on a Neural Network

Abstract:The capture and storage of toxic industrial chemicals such as H2S using porous polymer networks (PPNs) has shown promising application because of their high porosity, high surface area, high stability, low-cost and lightweight. In this work, 17,846 PPNs with the diamond-like topology were computationally screened to identify the optimal adsorbents for the removal of H2S and CO2 from humid natural gas based on the combination of molecular simulation and machine learning algorithms. The top-performing PPNs such as hPAFs-0201 with the highest adsorption performance scores (APS) were evaluated and identified based on their adsorption capacities and selectivity for H2S and CO2. The strong affinity between water molecules and the framework atoms in a few PPNs has a significant impact on the adsorption selectivity of acid gases. Based on decision tree analysis, we found two main design paths of the optimal PPNs for natural gas sweetening, which are the PPNs with LCD <= 4.648 angstrom, V-f <= 0.035, and PLD <= 3.889 angstrom, and those with 4.648 angstrom <= LCD <= 5.959 angstrom, rho <= 837 kg m(-3). In addition, we constructed different machine learning models, particularly artificial neural network, available to accurately predict the APS of PPNs. 2D projection map of geometrical properties of PPNs using the t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) method shows that the screened 390 samples exhibit the similar structures. Among the top-23 PPNs with the highest APS, hPAFs-0201 has enhanced natural gas sweetening performance due to its strong affinity between the N-rich organic linkers and acid gases. hPAFs-0752 shows the highest isosteric adsorption heat of H2S and CO2 (Q degrees(st) = 49.84 kJ mol(-1)), resulting in its second-highest APS as well as high hydrophilicity. Based on the combination of molecular simulation and machine learning, comprehensive insights into the high-throughput screening of PPNs in this work will provide new ideas for the design of high-performance PPNs for gas separation.

Abstract:The efficient removal of low-concentration SO2is of great significancebut challenging due to the competitive adsorption of CO2. Herein, we report theefficient capture of low-concentration SO2with high selectivity over CO2by Mn(INA)2(INA = isonicotinate) with a designed pore structure. Notably, the channels ofMn(INA)2exhibit large cavities and narrow bottlenecks, leading to the exclusion of thelarger molecules of N2and CH4. An interesting phenomenon was observed throughsingle-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments where SO2"opened"the bottlenecks andentered the cavities via the rotation of the pyridine ring (12.2 degrees) to enlarge the cavitiesto accommodate SO2molecules. These responsive properties of Mn(INA)2to SO2molecules afford high SO2/CO2separation selectivity. In addition,first-principlesdispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) calculations elucidate that thehigh-density host-guest interactions including duple S delta+middotmiddotmiddotO delta-electrostatic inter-actions, multiple H delta+middotmiddotmiddotO delta-dipole-dipole interactions, and guest-guest interactionsbetween SO2molecules are responsible for the sensitive response of the material toward low-concentration SO2(2000 ppm). Theefficient SO2capture properties of Mn(INA)2are further demonstrated by the breakthrough experiments. Abstract:The fabrication of nanoporous organic polymers (NOPs) for the highly efficient capture of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) through the self-polymerization of an AB2 monomer presents significant challenges. In this study, two triphenylamine-based NOPs (ANOP-3 and ANOP-4) were synthesized via the self-condensation of 4-(N, N-diphenylamino) benzaldehyde and 4'-(diphenylamino) biphenyl-4-carbaldehyde. The resultant polymers exhibited a large BET surface area of up to 1016 m2·g-1 and a small pore size of ~ 0.7 nm. ANOP-4 demonstrated an SO2 adsorption uptake of 21.9 mmol·g-1 at 273 K and 100 kPa. At 298 K and 100 kPa, ANOP-3 and ANOP-4 exhibited remarkable SO2/CO2 selectivities of up to 64.7 and 50.5, respectively, when applying the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST). The exceptional adsorption and separation performance of the ANOP polymers can be attributed to the ultramicroporous structure and the strong affinity between the adsorbents and polymers. This robust affinity has been revealed by theoretical simulations. This study presents a novel building block for the development of highly efficient SO2 sorbents.

Abstract:Porous ionic polymers with unique features have exhibited high performance in various applications. However, the fabrication of functional porous ionic polymers with custom functionality and porosity for efficient removal of low-concentration SO2 remains challenging. Herein, a novel nitrogen-enriched porous ionic polymer NH2Py-PIP is prepared featuring high-content nitrogen sites (15.9 wt.%), adequate ionic sites (1.22 mmol g-1), and a hierarchical porous structure. The proposed construction pathway relies on a tailored nitrogen-functionalized cross-linker NH2Py, which effectively introduces abundant functional sites and improves the porosity of porous ionic polymers. NH2Py-PIP with a well-engineered SO2-affinity environment achieves excellent SO2/CO2 selectivity (1165) and high SO2 adsorption capacity (1.13 mmol g-1 at 0.002 bar), as well as enables highly efficient and reversible dynamic separation performance. Modeling studies further elucidate that the nitrogen sites and bromide anions collaboratively promote preferential adsorption of SO2. The unique design in this work provides new insights into constructing functional porous ionic polymers for high-efficiency separations.
A robust triphenylamine-based monolithic polymer network for selective sieving of CO2 and PM from flue gas

Abstract:The increasingly urgent issue of climate change is driving the development of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and separation technologies in flue gas after combustion. The monolithic adsorbent stands out in practical adsorption applications for its simplified powder compaction process while maintaining the inherent balance between energy consumption for regeneration and selectivity for adsorption. However, optimizing the adsorption capacity and selectivity of CO2 separation materials remains a significant challenge. Herein, we synthesized monolithic polymer networks (N-CMPs) with triphenylamine adsorption sites, acid-base environment tolerance, and precise narrow microchannel pore systems for the selective sieving of CO2 and particulate matter (PM) in flue gas. The inherent continuous covalent bonding of N-CMPs, along with their highly delocalized π-π conjugated porous framework, ensures the stability of the monolithic polymer network's adsorption and separation capabilities under wet and acid-base conditions. Specifically, under the conditions of 1 bar at 273 K, the CO2 adsorption capacity of N-CMP-1 is 3.35 mmol/g. Attributed to the highly polar environment generated by triphenylamine and the inherent high micropore/mesopore ratio, N-CMPs exhibit an excellent ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity for CO2/N2 under simulated flue gas conditions (CO2/N2 = 15:85). Dynamic breakthrough experiments further visualize the high separation efficiency of N-CMPs in practical adsorption applications. Moreover, under acid-base conditions, N-CMPs achieve a capture efficiency exceeding 99.76 % for PM0.3, enabling the selective separation of CO2 and PM in flue gas. In fact, the combined capture of hazardous PM and CO2 from the exhaust gases produced by the combustion of fossil fuels will play a pivotal role in mitigating climate change and environmental issues until low-carbon and alternative energy technologies are widely adopted.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) as an absorbent can effectively absorb SO2 in flue gas.Unlike other absorbents,polyaniline has high thermal stability.Because of polyaniline's aggregate structure,the particles can mutually fuse in the process of desulfurization,resulting in a decrease in the adsorption efficiency.This study uses polyaniline composite absorbents that are respectively made of attapulgite,diatomite,vermiculite,and aniline to absorb SO2 in flue gas,which can effectively reduce the contact of polyaniline particles with each other and avoid the fusion of particles in the process of desulfurization.The experimental results show that the polyaniline composite absorbents can absorb SO2 because of the presence of polyaniline in composite absorbents.The principle of adsorption is mainly chemical adsorption.When the temperature of adsorption is 100 ～ 180 ℃,the polyaniline had a better effect.The adsorbent can be recycled and maintain its good adsorbing capacity.The composites doped with attapulgite,vermiculite,and diatomite had better excellent adsorption effects for SO2 than those of PANI modified with nothing.
Enhanced Tolerance to Flue Gas Contaminants on Carbon Dioxide Capture Using Amine-Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:The adsorption behavior of adsorbents for carbon dioxide can be significantly affected by flue gas contaminants. In this work, we examined the performance of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) impregnated industrial grade multiwalled carbon nanotubes (IG-MWCNTs) in trace amounts of flue gas contaminants such as H2O, NO, and SO2. It was observed that H2O and NO had a minimal impact on CO2 adsorption capacity, while the effect of SO2 on CO2 adsorption was influenced by adsorption temperature and SO2 concentration. Compared with silica-based adsorbents, i.e., TEPA-impregnated MCM-41, amine-functionalized IG-MWCNTs show significantly better tolerance to H2O and SO2. In addition, we examined the variation of CO2 adsorption with and without SO2 with various experimental methods (N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry analysis) and molecular simulation. Experimental results show that irreversible sulfate/sulphite species deposited into the adsorbent contributes to the decrease on CO2 adsorption, while the results from simulation studies reveal that the enthalpy difference between the isolated TEPA with SO2 and TEPA center dot center dot center dot SO2 (Delta H(TEPA center dot center dot center dot SO2)) is larger than that of CO2 (Delta H(TEPA center dot center dot center dot CO2)), indicating that SO2 has a stronger reaction activity with TEPA than CO2. The increase of the ratio of Delta H(TEPA center dot center dot center dot SO2)/Delta H(TEPA center dot center dot center dot CO2) with increasing temperature illustrates that the difference of CO2 adsorption capacity with and without SO2 increases with elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Flue gas from coal-fired power plants often contains SO2 even after desulfurization, the existence of which can dramatically reduce the adsorption of CO2 with amine-based solid sorbents. To tackle this challenge, a new sorbent, polyamine-based protic ionic liquid-functionalized mesoporous silica, was developed by doping nitrate into triethylenetetramine. The dynamic CO2 adsorption/desorption experiments under 500 ppm SO2 show that the CO2 adsorption capacities of the nitrate-containing sorbent almost remain invariant after 11 adsorption/desorption cycles, but the adsorption capacities of the sorbent without nitrate decrease by 50.9%. The significant improvement in SO2 resistance of the nitrate-containing sorbent was further explained with density functional theory calculation, which reveals the binding energy and net charge transfer amounts between SO2 and the secondary amine -N(2)H decrease by 6.3 and 22.1%, respectively. In addition, the experimental results from Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that nitrate inhibits the reaction between amine groups and SO2 to form sulfonamides.

Abstract:As a typical corrosive and toxic exhaust gas, the effective elimination of sulfur dioxide is of great importance for flue gas desulfurization. Yet the facile synthesis of adsorbents with high capture capacity (especially at low partial pressures) as well as excellent stability remains a challenge. Herein, we reported the preparation of N-functionalized ordered mesoporous carbons through a solvent-free self-assembly strategy for selective capture and separation of SO2 via enhanced base-acid host–guest interaction. The N-doped ordered mesoporous carbons were synthesized using Pluronic F127, terephthalaldehyde, and m-aminophenol as raw materials, then followed by activation with KOH. The synthesized N-OMC-T samples are found to exhibit large specific surface areas (∼1191 m2/g) and multifunctional nitrogen base sites. The synthesized K-N-OMC-T samples show excellent SO2 capacity with 13.15 mmol/g at 1.0 bar and 25 °C, and the corresponding IAST selectivities for SO2/N2 and SO2/CO2 reach up to 195.8 and 16.4 (25 °C), respectively. The breakthrough tests further demonstrate the impressive elimination of SO2 from SO2/CO2/N2 gasmixture by K-N-OMC-T samples.Thus, it is believed that the possibility for selective SO2 capture from flue gas is for K-N-OMC-T samples.

Abstract:Developing new technologies for the reduction of SO2 emission is highly demanded. In this work, a meso-macroporous polymer was synthesized by one-step solvothermal polymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB). The synthesized polymer−polydivinylbenzene (PDVB) also has considerably large pore volume. Given these features, a series of composite sorbents with a polytertiary amine (PTA) physically immobilized in PDVB were then synthesized, and subsequently characterized and investigated for the capture of SO2 in details. The PTA loadings of composite sorbents range from 1.00 to 2.35 g/g, which are dense in the functionalization of tertiary amine groups that enable Lewis base-acid interaction with SO2. As a result, the composite sorbents exhibit excellent efficiency for SO2 capture, especially at extremely low pressures. The SO2 adsorption capacities of composite sorbents have the values of 3.86∼6.88 mmol/g of SO2 at 25 °C and 0.002 bar. The composite sorbents are also excellent for the selective separation of SO2 from CO2 and N2, as well as the excellent reversibility for the adsorption of SO2.

Abstract:The quest for effective technologies to reduce SO 2 pollution is crucial due to its adverse effects on the environment and human health. Markedly, removing a ppm level of SO 2 from CO 2 -containing waste gas is a persistent challenge, and current technologies suffer from low SO 2 /CO 2 selectivity and energy-intensive regeneration processes. Here using the molecular building blocks approach and theoretical calculation, we constructed two porous organic polymers (POPs) encompassing pocket-like structures with exposed imidazole groups, promoting preferential interactions with SO 2 from CO 2 -containing streams. Markedly, the evaluated POPs offer outstanding SO 2 /CO 2 selectivity, high SO 2 capacity, and an easy regeneration process, making it one of the best materials for SO 2 capture. To gain better structural insights into the notable SO 2 selectivity of the POPs, we used dynamic nuclear polarization NMR spectroscopy (DNP) and molecular modelling to probe the interactions between SO 2 and POP adsorbents. The newly developed materials are poised to offer an energy-efficient and environment-friendly SO 2 separation process while we are obliged to use fossil fuels for our energy needs.

Abstract:The governance of sulfur dioxide emissions in the atmosphere is a global challenge. Herein, a three-dimensional ultramicroporous porous organic framework named TAM-POF with high surface areas, abundant accessible N sites and suitable pore size was synthesized for elimination of SO2 in flue gases and aromatic sulfides in liquid fuels. The adsorption and separation performance of TAM-POF is investigated by equilibrium gas adsorption, instant adsorption rates and column breakthrough experiments. A record-high SO2 dynamic adsorption capacity of 2.92 mmol g−1 in ternary gas mixture (0.5/10/89.5, v/v/v, SO2/CO2/N2) and SO2/CO2 (1 2 4) and 3-methylthiophene/n-octane (42) selectivities were achieved in TAM-POF. The strong interaction between adsorbents and TAM-POF, as well as appropriate pore apertures are the main reason for their excellent desulfurization performance, which are also evidenced by theory simulation.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics B, Ahead of Print. To control the emission of SO2 from flue gas into the atmosphere while considering the capture and collection of greenhouse gas CO2, the adsorption behavior of a binary mixture of SO2 and other gases in flue gas (O2/N2/H2O/CO[math] in (10, 10) carbon nanotube (CNT) was simulated using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation. The adsorption and separation performance of SO2 in CNTs with a diameter range of 0.81–1.63 nm for the five-component mixture gas was also analyzed. The findings suggest that the adsorption and separation of SO2 are primarily influenced by CO2 (reduction of adsorption capacity by about 50%, separation coefficient of SO2/CO2 is lowest) with this effect being more pronounced under high pressure. Meanwhile, it was observed that CNTs with larger pipe diameters exhibit higher SO2 adsorption capacity, but relatively lower SO2/CO2 selectivity and lower stability. On the other hand, CNTs with smaller diameters have relatively lower adsorption capacity for SO2, but exhibit good selectivity and stability (under different pressure) for SO2/CO2. Based on the statistical analysis of SO2 adsorption capacity and SO2/CO2 selectivity, it was determined that (6, 6) CNT with a diameter of 0.81[math]nm can exhibit excellent SO2 adsorption and separation performance at atmospheric pressure, while appropriate large diameter CNTs should be selected for flue gas treatment under high pressure.

Abstract:In the present study, to insert the Cu nanoparticles (NPs) into mesoporous carbon aerogels and first applied it to remove H2S efficiently. This desulfurizer was made based on the dimensional policy by inserting the Cu NPs on mesoporous carbon aerogels to overcome the sintering problem and improve the activity, which has potential performance at high-temperature catalysis. The obtained desulfurizer was employed for H2S removal at middle temperature conditions (optimal H2S adsorption at 550 degrees C). We explored the optimum doping amount of CuOx, optimum temperature conditions, and the influence of textural parameters of carbon aerogels. The desulfurizers were characterized by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), N-2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), and Raman spectra techniques. The results confirmed that the presence of H-2 was unfavorable for sulfidation and obviously shortened the breakthrough time. However, the existence of CO had little impact on the desulfurization and sulfur capacity. In a nutshell, this work could provide a new synthetic route to prepare Cu NPs deep into the lattice of carbon aerogels structure of desulfurizers and understand the desulfurization mechanism.
High-performance Electrospun Polystyrene-Based Nanofiber Membrane for Efficient SO2 Capture

Abstract:It is essential to design a stable membrane material to solve the pollution produced by SO2 emissions. This study aims to fabricate polystyrene (PS) nanofiber membranes, which are applied for flue gas desulfurization. PS nanofiber membranes are fabricated via electrospinning with porous polypropylene (PP) membrane as the support and high hydrophobic PS as the main membrane material. The modified membranes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, true color confocal microscopy and other analytical methods, and the effects of mixed solvent ratio and polymer concentration on the desulfurization performance and on the stability of PS nanofiber membranes are investigated. The results suggest that an optimum hydrophobicity of PS nanofiber membrane is obtained with a water contact angle of 145 degrees, when the polymer concentration is 5 %. The average pore size of PS nanofiber membrane is 1.56 mu m, and the liquid entry pressure of water (LEPw) is 0.26 bar and the roughness of membrane is 5.674 mu m. The desulfurization performance of the PS nanofiber membrane is better than that of the PP membrane. The SO2 absorption flux of the modified membranes keeps at 7.2 x 10-4 to 7.6 x 10-4 mol center dot m- 2 center dot s- 1 during 5 h operating, and SO2 removal efficiency is up to 50 %, which potentially makes contributions to air pollution reduction.
