Abstract:The short time dynamic behavior of the second-order phase transition in the two-dimensional fully frustrated XY model with nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) couplings is investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. When x< 12 (x is the ratio between NNN and NN couplings), the transition temperature T-c and the dynamic and static critical exponents z, 2 beta/nu, and nu are estimated using the short-time dynamic scaling analysis. Except x close to the critical value 1/root2, the critical exponents 2 beta/nu and nu are found to be almost independent of the NNN coupling, indicating that the second-order phase transitions in the FFXY model, with or without NNN coupling. are in the same universality class. When x > 1/root2, the short-time dynamic study suggests that there is no second-order phase transition, in agreement with the previous result.
Universal finite-size scaling in the extraordinary-log boundary phase of 3d $O(N)$ model

Abstract:Recent advances in boundary critical phenomena have led to the discovery of a new surface universality class in the three-dimensional $O(N)$ model. The newly found "extraordinary-log" phase can be realized on a two-dimensional surface for $N< N_c$, with $N_c>3$, and on a plane defect embedded into a three-dimensional system, for any $N$. One of the key features of the extraordinary-log phase is the presence of logarithmic violations of standard finite-size scaling. In this work we study finite-size scaling in the extraordinary-log universality class by means of Monte Carlo simulations of an improved lattice model. We simulate the model with open boundary conditions, realizing the extraordinary-log phase on the surface for $N=2,3$, as well as with fully periodic boundary conditions and in the presence of a plane defect for $N=2,3,4$. In line with theory predictions, renormalization-group invariant observables studied here exhibit a logarithmic dependence on the size of the system. We numerically access not only the leading term in the $\beta$-function governing these logarithmic violations, but also the subleading term, which controls the evolution of the boundary phase diagram as a function of $N$.

A test of first order scaling in Nf=2 QCD

Abstract:We complete our analysis of Nf=2 QCD based on the lattice staggered fermion formulation. Using a series of Monte Carlo simulations at fixed (amq*Ls^yh) one is able to test the universality class with given critical exponent yh. This strategy has been used to test the O(4) universality class and it has been presented at the previous Lattice conferences. No agreement was found with simulations in the mass range amq=[0.01335,0.15] using lattices with Ls=16 up to 32 and Lt=4. With the same strategy, we now investigate the possibility of a first order transition using a new set of Monte Carlo data corresponding to yh=3 in the same mass and volume range as the one used for O(4). A substantial agreement is observed both in the specific heat scaling and in the scaling of the chiral condensate, while the chiral susceptibilities still presents visible deviation from scaling in the mass range explored.

Abstract:We study the effects of quenched disorder on the first-order phase transition in the two-dimensional three-color Ashkin-Teller model by means of large-scaleMonte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the first-order phase transition is rounded by the disorder and turns into a continuous one. Using a careful finite-size-scaling analysis, we provide strong evidence for the emerging critical behavior of the disordered Ashkin-Teller model to be in the clean two-dimensional Ising universality class, accompanied by universal logarithmic corrections. This agrees with perturbative renormalization-group predictions by Cardy. As a byproduct, we also provide support for the strong-universality scenario for the critical behavior of the two-dimensional disordered Ising model. We discuss consequences of our results for the classification of disordered phase transitions as well as generalizations to other systems.

Abstract:The second-order phase transition in the two-dimensional (2D) classical Coulomb gas of half-integer charges on a square lattice is investigated by using Monte Carlo simulations. Based on the finite-size scaling analysis, we estimate the second-order phase transition temperature T-c and the static critical exponents beta and nu with a new numerical analysis method. More precise critical temperature T-c = 0.1311(2) and critical exponents beta/nu = 0.1152(12) and nu = 0.857(15) are obtained. The estimated value of nu indicates that the charge lattice melting transition is different from the pure 2D Ising transition.
The effect of quenched bond disorder on first-order phase transitions

Abstract:We investigate the effect of quenched bond disorder on the two-dimensional three-color Ashkin-Teller model, which undergoes a first-order phase transition in the absence of impurities. This is one of the simplest and striking models in which quantitative numerical simulations can be carried out to investigate emergent criticality due to disorder rounding of first-order transition. Utilizing extensive cluster Monte Carlo simulations on large lattice sizes of up to $128 \times 128$ spins, each of which is represented by three colors taking values $\pm 1$, we show that the rounding of the first-order phase transition is an emergent criticality. We further calculate the correlation length critical exponent, $\nu$, and the magnetization critical exponent, $\beta$, from finite size scaling analysis. We find that the critical exponents, $\nu$ and $\beta$, change as the strength of disorder or the four-spin coupling varies, and we show that the critical exponents appear not to be in the Ising universality class. We know of no analytical approaches that can explain our non-perturbative results. However our results should inspire further work on this important problem, either numerical or analytical.

Abstract:We present a new unified theory of critical finite-size scaling for lattice statistical mechanical models with periodic boundary conditions above the upper critical dimension. The universal finite-size scaling is inherited from the scaling of the system unwrapped to the infinite lattice. A Wilsonian renormalisation group analysis determines a universal profile for the susceptibility and two-point function plateau. Our theory is based on recent mathematically rigorous results for linear and branched polymers, multi-component spin systems, and percolation. Both short-range and long-range interactions are included. With free boundary conditions, the universal scaling applies at a pseudocritical point.

Abstract:In this work we analyze the universal scaling functions and the critical exponents at the upper critical dimension of a continuous phase transition. The consideration of the universal scaling behavior yields a decisive check of the value of the upper critical dimension. We apply our method to a non-equilibrium continuous phase transition. But focusing on the equation of state of the phase transition it is easy to extend our analysis to all equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase transitions observed numerically or experimentally.

Abstract:The eigenvalue distribution of a Wilson loop operator of fixed shape undergoes a transition under scaling at infinite N. We derive a large N scaling function in a double scaling limit of the average characteristic polynomial associated with the Wilson loop operator in two dimensional QCD. We hypothesize that the transition in three and four dimensional large N QCD are also in the same universality class and provide a numerical test for our hypothesis in three dimensions.

Probing phase transitions with correlations in configuration space

Abstract:In principle, the probability of configurations, determined by the system's partition function or wave function, encapsulates essential information about phases and phase transitions. Despite the exponentially large configuration space, we show that the generic correlation of distances between configurations, with a degree of freedom proportional to the lattice size, can probe phase transitions using importance sampling procedures like Monte Carlo simulations. The distribution of sampled distances varies significantly across different phases, suggesting universal critical behavior for uncertainty and participation entropy. For various classical spin models with different phases and transitions, finite-size analysis based on these quantities accurately identifies phase transitions and critical points. Notably, in all cases, the critical exponent derived from the uncertainty of distances equals the anomalous dimension governing real-space correlation decay. Thus, configuration space correlations, defined by distance uncertainties, share the same decay ratio as real-space correlations, determining the universality class of phase transitions. This work applies to diverse lattice models with different local degrees of freedom, e.g., two levels for Ising-like models, discrete multi-levels for q-state clock models, and continuous local levels for the XY model, offering a robust, alternative method for understanding complex phases and transitions.

Abstract:Phase transitions and critical phenomena are among the most intriguing phenomena in nature and society. They are classified as first-order phase transitions (FOPTs) and continuous ones. While the latter shows marvelous phenomena of scaling and universality, whether the former behaves similarly is a long-standing controversial issue. Here we definitely demonstrate complete universal scaling in field driven FOPTs for Langevin equations in both zero and two spatial dimensions by rescaling all parameters and subtracting nonuniversal contributions with singular dimensions from an effective temperature and a special field according to an effective theory. This offers a perspective different from the usual nucleation and growth but conforming to continuous phase transitions to study FOPTs.

Abstract:Recent lattice QCD calculations show strong indications that the crossover of QCD at zero baryon chemical potential ($\mu_B$) is a remnant of the second order chiral phase transition. The non-universal parameters needed to map temperature $T$ and $\mu_B$ to the universal properties of the second order chiral phase transition were determined by lattice QCD calculations. Motivated by these advances, first, we discuss the analytic structure of the partition function -- the so-called Yang-Lee edge singularity -- in the QCD crossover regime, solely based on universal properties. Then, utilizing the lattice calculated non-universal parameters, we map this singularity to the real $T$ and complex $\mu_B$ plane, in order to find the radius of convergence for a Taylor series expansion of QCD partition function around $\mu_B=0$ in the QCD crossover regime. Our most important findings are: (i) An universality-based estimate of the radius of convergence around $\mu_B=0$; (ii) Universality and lattice QCD based constraints on the location of the QCD critical point in the $T-\mu_B$ plane.

Abstract:One of the most impressive features of continuous phase transitions is the concept of universality, that allows to group the great variety of different critical phenomena into a small number of universality classes. All systems belonging to a given universality class have the same critical exponents, and certain scaling functions become identical near the critical point. It is the aim of this work to demonstrate the usefulness of universal scaling functions for the analysis of non-equilibrium phase transitions. In order to limit the coverage of this article, we focus on a particular class of non-equilibrium critical phenomena, the so-called absorbing phase transitions. These phase transitions arise from a competition of opposing processes, usually creation and annihilation processes. The transition point separates an active phase and an absorbing phase in which the dynamics is frozen. A systematic analysis of universal scaling functions of absorbing phase transitions is presented, including static, dynamical, and finite-size scaling measurements. As a result a picture gallery of universal scaling functions is presented which allows to identify and to distinguish universality classes.

Abstract:The phase diagram of QCD at finite temperature and density and the existence of a critical point are currently very actively researched topics. Although tremendous progress has been made, in the case of two light quark flavors even the order of the phase transition at zero density is still under discussion. Finite-size scaling is a powerful method for the analysis of phase transitions in lattice QCD simulations. From the scaling behavior, critical exponents can be tested and the order as well as the universality class of a phase transition can be established. This requires knowledge of the critical exponents and the scaling behavior. We use a non-perturbative Renormalization Group method to obtain critical exponents and the finite-size scaling functions for the O(4) universality class in three dimensions. These results are useful for a comparison to the actual scaling behavior in lattice QCD simulations with two flavors, as well as for an estimate of the size of the scaling region and the deviations from the expected scaling behavior.

Abstract:The correlation functions related to topological phase transitions in inversion-symmetric lattice models described by $2\times 2$ Dirac Hamiltonians are discussed. In one dimension, the correlation function measures the charge-polarization correlation between Wannier states at different positions, while in two dimensions it measures the itinerant-circulation correlation between Wannier states. The correlation function is nonzero in both the topologically trivial and nontrivial states, and allows to extract a correlation length that diverges at topological phase transitions. The correlation length and the curvature function that defines the topological invariants are shown to have universal critical exponents, allowing the notion of universality classes to be introduced. Particularly in two dimensions, the universality class is determined by the orbital symmetry of the Dirac model. The scaling laws that constrain the critical exponents are revealed, and are predicted to be satisfied even in interacting systems, as demonstrated in an interacting topological Kondo Insulator.

Abstract:The hunt for exotic quantum phase transitions described by emergent fractionalized degrees of freedom coupled to gauge fields requires a precise determination of the fixed point structure from the field theoretical side, and an extreme sensitivity to weak first-order transitions from the numerical side. Addressing the latter, we revive the classic definition of the order parameter in the limit of a vanishing external field at the transition. We demonstrate that this widely understood, yet so far unused approach provides a diagnostic test for first-order versus continuous behavior that is distinctly more sensitive than current methods. We first apply it to the family of $Q$-state Potts models, where the nature of the transition is continuous for $Q\leq4$ and turns (weakly) first order for $Q>4$, using an infinite system matrix product state implementation. We then employ this new approach to address the unsettled question of deconfined quantum criticality in the $S=1/2$ Néel to valence bond solid transition in two dimensions, focusing on the square lattice $J$-$Q$ model. Our quantum Monte Carlo simulations reveal that both order parameters remain finite at the transition, directly confirming a first-order scenario with wide reaching implications in condensed matter and quantum field theory.

Scale-invariant phase transition of disordered bosons in one dimension

Abstract:The disorder-induced quantum phase transition between superfluid and non-superfluid states of bosonic particles in one dimension is generally expected to be of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type. Here, we show that hard-core lattice bosons with integrable power-law hopping decaying with distance as $1/r^\alpha$ - corresponding in spin language to a $XY$ model with power-law couplings - undergo a non-BKT continuous phase transition instead. We use exact quantum Monte-Carlo methods to determine the phase diagram for different values of the exponent $\alpha$, focusing on the regime $\alpha > 2$. We find that the scaling of the superfluid stiffness with the system size is scale-invariant at the transition point for any $\alpha\leq 3$ - a behavior incompatible with the BKT scenario and typical of continuous phase transitions in higher dimension. By scaling analysis near the transition point, we find that our data are consistent with a correlation length exponent satisfying the Harris bound $\nu \geq 2$ and demonstrate a new universal behavior of disordered bosons in one dimension. For $\alpha>3$ our data are consistent with a BKT scenario where the liquid is pinned by infinitesimal disorder.

First-order bulk transitions in large-$N$ lattice Yang--Mills theories using the density of states

Abstract:We use the Logarithmic Linear Relaxation (LLR) density of states algorithm to study the bulk phase transitions of pure-gauge SU($N$) lattice Yang--Mills theories with $4 \leq N \leq 8$. This approach avoids super-critical slowing down at such transitions, which poses a problem for traditional importance sampling Monte-Carlo methods. We analyse the effect of different updating strategies within the LLR algorithm, different reconstruction techniques of the density of states and different lattice volumes. By comparing our results for the weakly first-order SU(5) bulk phase transition against those for the stronger transitions with $N \geq 6$, we demonstrate the advantages of the LLR method for analyses of strong transitions with large latent heat.

$ϕ^4$ lattice model with cubic symmetry in three dimensions: RG-flow and first order phase transitions

Abstract:We study the $3$-component $\phi^4$ model on the simple cubic lattice in presence of a cubic perturbation. To this end, we perform Monte Carlo simulations in conjunction with a finite size scaling analysis of the data. The analysis of the renormalization group (RG)-flow of a dimensionless quantity provides us with the accurate estimate $Y_4 - \omega_2 =0.00081(7)$ for the difference of the RG-eigenvalue $Y_4$ at the $O(3)$-symmetric fixed point and the correction exponent $\omega_2$ at the cubic fixed point. We determine an effective exponent $\nu_{eff}$ of the correlation length that depends on the strength of the breaking of the $O(3)$ symmetry. Field theory predicts that depending on the sign of the cubic perturbation, the RG-flow is attracted by the cubic fixed point, or runs to an ever increasing amplitude, indicating a fluctuation induced first order phase transition. We demonstrate directly the first order nature of the phase transition for a sufficiently strong breaking of the $O(3)$ symmetry. We obtain accurate results for the latent heat, the correlation length in the disordered phase at the transition temperature and the interface tension for interfaces between one of the ordered phases and the disordered phase. We study how these quantities scale with the RG-flow, allowing quantitative predictions for weaker breaking of the $O(3)$ symmetry.
