Abstract:Non-Hermitian wave system has attracted intense attentions in the past decade since it reveals interesting physics and generates various counterintuitive effects. However, in the diffusive system that is inherently non-Hermitian with natural dissipation, the robust control of heat flow is hitherto still a challenge. Here we introduce the skin effect into diffusive systems. Different from the skin effect in wave systems, where asymmetric couplings were enabled by dynamic modulations or judicious gain/loss engineering, asymmetric couplings of the temperature fields in diffusive systems can be realized by directly contacted metamaterial channels. Topological heat funneling is further presented, where the temperature field automatically concentrates towards a designated position and shows a strong immunity against the defects. Our work indicates that the diffusive system can provide a distinctive platform for exploring non-Hermitian physics as well as thermal topology. Non-Hermitian systems can house a range of unusual physical phenomena such as the skin-effect which has been typically observed in optical lattices and electrical circuits. Here, the authors show the non-Hermitian skin effect in thermal transport, demonstrating that the topologically protected heat flow can be realized by using thermal metamaterials.
Can Scaling Analysis Be Used to Interpret the Anti-Parity-time Symmetry in Heat Transfer?

Abstract:In a previous work (Li et al. Science 364, 170) [1], we proposed a heat transfer system that preserves the anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry, and observe the rest-to-motion phase transition during the symmetry breaking. Recently, it was suggested (Zhao et al. arXiv:1906.08431) [2] that the behaviours of the system can be understood using scaling analysis based on the Péclet and Nusselt numbers (Pe and Nu). It was further proposed that there exists a third regime in the phase diagram in addition to the symmetric and symmetry broken phases. Although we appreciate the proposal to characterize the contributions of coupling, diffusion, and advection with dimensionless numbers, here we show that they do not help to predict or interpret the behaviours of the APT system. The dimensionless numbers do not provide enough details about the system to conclude that there is a motionless phase, a phase transition, to find the critical point, or to give the correct phase diagram with only two regimes.

Abstract:Making heat stand still Dissipative oscillating systems (waves) can be described mathematically in terms of non-Hermitian physics. When parity-time symmetric systems have dissipative components, the interplay between gain and loss can lead to unusual and exotic behavior. Li et al. show theoretically and demonstrate experimentally that such behavior need not be limited to wave systems. Looking at the diffusion of heat, they devised an experimental setup comprising two thermally coupled disks rotating in opposite directions. The thermal energy transported by each disk is strongly coupled to the disk rotating in the opposite direction, providing a return path for the heat wave. For a particular rotation rate, there is an exceptional point where thermal coupling and counterrotating motion balance, resulting in the thermal energy profile being stationary over time. Abstract:Exceptional point (EP) has been captivated as a concept of interpreting eigenvalue degeneracy and eigenstate exchange in non-Hermitian physics. The chirality in the vicinity of EP is intrinsically preserved and usually immune to external bias or perturbation, resulting in the robustness of asymmetric backscattering and directional emission in classical wave fields. Despite recent progress in non-Hermitian thermal diffusion, all state-of-the-art approaches fail to exhibit chiral states or directional robustness in heat transport. Here we report the first discovery of chiral heat transport, which is manifested only in the vicinity of EP but suppressed at the EP of a thermal system. The chiral heat transport demonstrates significant robustness against drastically varying advections and thermal perturbations imposed. Our results reveal the chirality in heat transport process and provide a novel strategy for manipulating mass, charge, and diffusive light.
Nonlinear Transformation Thermotics: from Switchable Thermal Cloaks to Macro Thermal Diodes

Abstract:The macroscopic control of ubiquitous heat flow remains poorly explored due to the lack of a fundamental theoretical method. Here, by establishing temperature-dependent transformation thermotics for treating materials whose conductivity depends on temperature, we show analytical and simulation evidence for switchable thermal cloaking and a macroscopic thermal diode based on the cloaking. The latter allows heat flow in one direction but prohibits the flow in the opposite direction, which is also confirmed by our experiments. Our results suggest that the temperature-dependent transformation thermotics could be a fundamental theoretical method for achieving macroscopic heat rectification, and provide guidance both for macroscopic control of heat flow and for the design of the counterparts of switchable thermal cloaks or macroscopic thermal diodes in other fields like seismology, acoustics, electromagnetics, or matter waves.
Observing parity-time symmetry in diffusive systems

Abstract:Phase modulation has scarcely been mentioned in diffusive systems since the diffusion process does not carry momentum like waves. Recently, the non-Hermitian physics provides a new perspective for understanding diffusion and shows prospects in the phase regulation of heat flow, for example, the discovery of anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry in diffusive systems. The precise control of thermal phase however remains elusive hitherto and can hardly be realized in APT-symmetric thermal systems due to the existence of phase oscillation. Here we construct the counterpart of APT-symmetric diffusive systems, i.e., PT-symmetric diffusive systems, which can achieve complete suppression of thermal phase oscillation. We find the real coupling of diffusive fields can be readily established through a strong convective background, where the decay-rate detuning is enabled by thermal metamaterial design. Moreover, we observe phase transition of PT symmetry breaking in diffusive systems with the symmetry-determined amplitude distribution and phase regulation of coupled temperature fields. Our work uncovers the existence of PT-symmetry in dissipative energy exchanges and provides a unique approach for harnessing the mass transfer of particles, the wave propagation in strongly scattering systems as well as thermal conduction.

High-Order Exceptional Points in Diffusive Systems: Robust APT Symmetry 2 Against Perturbation and Phase Oscillation at APT Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:In non-Hermitian systems with the Hamiltonians obeying parity-time (PT) symmetry, exploring the counterintuitive physics induced by degeneracies known as exceptional points (EPs) provides unprecedented ways to control energy flow.Recently, there are growing interests in bridging wave systems and diffusive systems, where anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry is demonstrated in diffusive systems.In this work, we start from the thermal energy transfer in a four-channel coupling model with the background flow velocities in adjacent channels opposite.A third order EP exists in this system, where temperature profiles in the moving channels are static in the APT symmetric phase (flow velocities below a threshold v EP at the EP), and the profiles begin to dynamically evolve in the APT broken phase (> v EP ).By introducing a velocity perturbation into the background flow at the third order EP (v EP ± ∆v), we find APT symmetry keeps robust with the phases of temperature profiles in adjacent channels relatively static or locked.When ∆v is increased above a threshold (another EP), the APT symmetry is breaking with a transition from phase locking to phase oscillation, regardless of initial conditions.This work unveils rich physics in convectively coupled diffusive systems and offers us new prospects for the control of complex thermal fields.

Abstract:The explorations of the quantum-inspired symmetries in optical and photonic systems have witnessed immense research interests both fundamentally and technologically in a wide range of subjects of physics and engineering. One of the principal emerging fields in this context is non-Hermitian physics based on parity-time symmetry, originally proposed in the studies pertaining to quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, recently ramified into diverse set of areas, particularly in optics and photonics. The intriguing physical effects enabled by non-Hermitian physics and PT symmetry have enhanced significant applications prospects and engineering of novel materials. In addition, it has observed increasing research interests in many emerging directions beyond optics and photonics. This Review paper attempts to bring together the state of the art developments in the field of complex non-Hermitian physics based on PT symmetry in various physical settings along with elucidating key concepts and background and a detailed perspective on new emerging directions. It can be anticipated that this trendy field of interest can be indispensable in providing new perspectives in maneuvering the flow of light in the diverse physical platforms in optics, photonics, condensed matter, opto-electronics and beyond, and offer distinctive applications prospects in novel functional materials.

Non-Hermitian scattering symmetry revealed by diffusive channels

Abstract:The Hamiltonian interprets how the system evolves, while the scattering coefficients describe how the system responds to inputs. Recent studies on non-Hermitian physics have revealed many unconventional effects. However, in all cases, the non-Hermiticity such as material loss is only considered for the Hamiltonian, even when studying scattering properties. Another important component-the scattering channel, is always assumed to be lossless and time-reversal symmetric. This assumption hinders the exploration on the more general and fundamental properties of non-Hermitian scattering. Here, we identify a novel kind of scattering channel that obeys time-reversal anti-symmetry. Such diffusive scattering channels overturn the conventional understanding about scattering symmetry by linking the positive and negative frequencies. By probing non-Hermitian systems with the diffusive channels, we reveal a hidden anti-parity-time (APT) scattering symmetry, which is distinct from the APT symmetry of Hamiltonians studied before. The symmetric and symmetry broken scattering phases are observed for the first time as the collapse and revival of temperature oscillation. Our work highlights the overlooked role of scattering channels in the symmetry and phase transition of non-Hermitian systems, thereby gives the diffusion the new life as a signal carrier. Our findings can be utilized to the analysis and control of strongly dissipative phenomena such as heat transfer and charge diffusion.

Abstract:Temporal interfaces introduced by abrupt switching of the constitutive parameters of unbounded media enable unusual wave phenomena. So far, their explorations have been mostly limited to lossless media. Yet, non-Hermitian phenomena leveraging material loss and gain, and their balanced combination in parity-time (PT)-symmetric systems, have been opening new vistas in photonics. Here, we unveil the role that temporal interfaces offer in non-Hermitian physics, introducing the dual of PT symmetry for temporal boundaries. Our findings reveal unexplored interference mechanisms enabling extreme energy manipulation, and open new scenarios for time-switched metamaterials, connecting them with the broad opportunities offered by non-Hermitian phenomena.

Abstract:Abstract Non‐Hermitian Hamiltonians may still possess real eigenvalues in case of the existence of parity‐time (PT) symmetry. Exceptional points (EPs) occur at the phase transition from real to complex eigenvalues due to PT‐symmetry breaking in the parameter space. Magnonic devices use magnons to carry, transport, and process information, which have the advantages of low energy dissipation, wave‐based computing, and nonlinear data processing. The combination of PT‐symmetry and magnonics may lead to novel physics as well as unprecedented functional device applications. Recently, the research of PT‐symmetry in magnetism has developed rapidly. In this review, the theoretical predictions as well as experimental findings of PT‐symmetry in magnetism are summarized. First, a brief introduction to PT symmetry, EPs, and anti‐PT symmetry is presented. Second, the theoretical and experimental progress of magnonic PT symmetry are summarized. Third, the theoretical predictions of higher‐order EPs and anti‐PT symmetry in magnonic systems are given. Finally, the study concludes by discussing the future challenges and research prospects in magnonic PT‐symmetry, and proposals for experimental observations of magnonic higher‐order EPs and anti‐PT symmetry are suggested.

Abstract:The recent experimental progress in parity-time (PT) symmetry has attracted great interest. However, compared with PT symmetry, there are only a few reported results on its counterpart, anti-PT symmetry, which would lead to new insights and applications. Experimentally simulating and demonstrating the properties of anti-PT symmetry is of particular interest. Here, we present experimental research for simulating the dynamics of bosonic Bogoliubov quasi-particles with anti-PT symmetry based on single photons generated from a point defect in a gallium nitride film. The dynamical evolution under a non-unitary operator is a continuous complex Lorentz transformation in a complex Minkowski space. The evolved states are located on hyperbolic curves, depending on the values of the new defined inner product, which remain invariant during the evolution. Three types of state, space-like, light-like, and time-like, which are analogous to those predicted by the special relativity, are demonstrated. The results of our work could be helpful to investigate the dynamics of quasi-particles in diverse systems and promote deep understanding of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics in open systems.
Geometric heat pump: Controlling thermal transport with time-dependent modulations

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The second law of thermodynamics dictates that heat simultaneously flows from the hot to cold bath on average. To go beyond this picture, a range of works in the past decade show that, other than the average dynamical heat flux determined by instantaneous thermal bias, a non-trivial flux contribution of intrinsic geometric origin is generally present in temporally driven systems. This additional heat flux provides a free lunch for the pumped heat and could even drive heat against the bias. We review here the emergence and development of this so called "geometric heat pump", originating from the topological geometric phase effect, and cover various quantum and classical transport systems with different internal dynamics. The generalization from the adiabatic to the non-adiabatic regime and the application of control theory are also discussed. Then, we briefly discuss the symmetry restriction on the heat pump effect, such as duality, supersymmetry and time-reversal symmetry. Finally, we examine open problems concerning the geometric heat pump process and elucidate their prospective significance in devising thermal machines with high performance.</p>

Abstract:The physics of systems that cannot be described by a Hermitian Hamiltonian, has been attracting a great deal of attention in recent years, motivated by their nontrivial responses and by a plethora of applications for sensing, lasing, energy transfer/harvesting, topology and quantum networks. Electromagnetics is an inherently non-Hermitian research area because all materials are lossy, loss and gain distributions can be controlled with various mechanisms, and the underlying systems are open to radiation. Therefore, the recent developments in non-Hermitian physics offer exciting opportunities for a broad range of basic research and engineering applications relevant to the antennas and propagation community. In this work, we offer a tutorial geared at introducing the unusual electromagnetic phenomena emerging in non-Hermitian systems, with particular emphasis on a sub-class of these systems that obey parity-time (PT) symmetry. We discuss the basic concepts behind this topic and explore their implications for various phenomena. We first discuss the basic features of P, T and PT operators applied to electromagnetic and quantum mechanical phenomena. We then discuss the exotic response of PT-symmetric electromagnetic structures and their opportunities, with particular attention to singularities, known as exceptional points, emerging in these systems, and their unusual scattering response.

Abstract:In standard quantum mechanics, the Hamiltonian describing the physical system is generally Hermitian, so as to ensure that the system has real energy spectra and that the system’s evolution is unitary. In recent years, it has been found that non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with parity-time (\begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document}) symmetry also have real energy spectra, and there is a novel non-Hermitian exceptional point between \begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document}-symmetric phase and \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document}-symmetry-broken phase, which is unique to non-Hermitian systems. Recently, people have realized \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetric and anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document} symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in various physical systems and demonstrated novel quantum phenomena, which not only deepened our understanding of the basic laws of quantum physics, but also promoted the breakthrough of application technology. This review will introduce the basic physical principles of \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetry and anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document} symmetry, summarize the schemes to realize \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetry and anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetry in optical and atomic systems systematically, including the observation of \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document}-symmetry transitions by engineering time-periodic dissipation and coupling in ultracold atoms and single trapped ion, the realization of anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetry in dissipative optical system by indirect coupling, and realizing anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document}-symmetry through fast atomic coherent transmission in flying atoms. Finally, we review the research on precision sensing using non-Hermitian exceptional points of \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document}-symmetric systems. Near the exceptional points, the eigenfrequency splitting follows an \begin{document}${\varepsilon }^{\tfrac{1}{N}}$\end{document}-dependence, where the \begin{document}$\varepsilon$\end{document} is the perturbation and \begin{document}$ N $\end{document} is the order of the exceptional point. We review the \begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document}-symmetric system composed of three equidistant micro-ring cavities and enhanced sensitivity at third-order exceptional points. Abstract:Abstract The reciprocity principle governs the symmetry in transmission of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, as well as the diffusion of heat between two points in space, with important consequences for thermal management and energy harvesting. There has been significant recent interest in materials with time-modulated properties, which have been shown to efficiently break reciprocity for light, sound, and even charge diffusion. However, time modulation may not be a plausible approach to break thermal reciprocity, in contrast to the usual perception. We establish a theoretical framework to accurately describe the behavior of diffusive processes under time modulation, and prove that thermal reciprocity in dynamic materials is generally preserved by the continuity equation, unless some external bias or special material is considered. We then experimentally demonstrate reciprocal heat transfer in a time-modulated device. Our findings correct previous misconceptions regarding reciprocity breaking for thermal diffusion, revealing the generality of symmetry constraints in heat transfer, and clarifying its differences from other transport processes in what concerns the principles of reciprocity and microscopic reversibility.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian physics and topological phenomena are two hot topics attracted much attention in condensed matter physics and artificial metamaterials. Thermal metamaterials are one type of metamaterials that can manipulate heat on one's own. Recently, it has been found that non-Hermitian physics and topological phenomena can be implemented in purely diffusive systems. However, conduction alone is not omnipotent due to the missing of degrees of freedom. Heat convection, accompanying with conduction, is capable of realizing a large number of phases. In this review, we will present some important works on non-Hermitian and topological convective thermal metamaterials. In non-Hermitian physics, we will first discuss the implementation of exceptional point (EP) in thermal diffusion, followed by high-order EP and dynamic encirclement of EP. We then discuss two works on the extensions of EP in diffusion systems, namely, the chiral thermal behavior in the vicinity of EP and the Weyl exceptional ring. For topological phases, we will discuss two examples: a one-dimensional topological insulator and a two-dimensional quadrupole topological insulator. Finally, we will make a conclusion and present a promising outlook in this area. Besides the scientific values, non-Hermitian and topological convective thermal metamaterials have great potentials for industrial applications.
