Abstract:The KiSS - 1 and GPR54 genes were studied as candidate genes for the prolificacy in sheep. Four pairs of primers were designed to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms of exon 1 of KiSS - 1 gene and exon 1, exon 2 and partial exon 5 of GPR54 gene in high fecundity breeds (Small Tail Han and Hu sheep) and low fecundity breeds (Dorset, Texel and Corriedale sheep) by PCR-SSCP. Polymorphisms in exon 1 of KiSS - 1 gene were detected in prolific Small Tail Han sheep ( AA , AB and BB genotypes) and Hu sheep ( AA and CC genotypes), no polymorphism was found in low fecundity sheep breeds (only AA genotype). Polymorphisms in exon 2 of GPR54 gene were detected in prolific Hu sheep ( DD and EE genotypes) and no polymorphism was found in prolific Small Tail Han sheep and low fecundity sheep breeds (only DD genotype). No polymorphism was detected in exon 1 and partial exon 5 of GPR54 gene in five sheep breeds. The polymorphic genotypes were sequenced. While compared the BB genotype with the AA genotype, one nucleotide mutation (G1035A) was detected, which resulted in amino acid change, Val25Met. Five nucleotide mutations were detected from AA to CC genotype (C981T, C996T, T997C, C1034G, C1039T), and among them four caused amino acid changes, that is, Arg7Trp, Phe12Leu, Asn24Lys, Ala26Val. While compared the EE genotype with the DD genotype, two nucleotide mutations (T2360C, A2411C) were detected, which gave rise to amino acid changes, Met90Thr and Asp107Ala, respectively. Genotype frequencies of AA , BB and AB were 0.62, 0.05 and 0.33 in Small Tail Han sheep, respectively. The Small Tail Han sheep ewes with genotype BB or AB had 0.88 ( P < 0.05) or 0.51 ( P < 0.05) lambs more than those with genotype AA ; the Small Tail Han sheep ewes with genotype BB had 0.37 ( P > 0.05) lambs more than those with genotype AB . These results preliminarily indicated that the KiSS - 1 gene may have some association with prolificacy in sheep.
Genetic and phenotypic parameters for growth and lamb survival traits of Farta and their crosses with Washera sheep in northwest Ethiopia: Inputs to design of breeding programs

Abstract:Genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated for various traits of Farta and their crosses with Washera sheep in northwest Ethiopia. Data collected from 2015 to 2020 on 4318 lambs were used. A number of models were evaluated, all contained the direct additive animal genetic effect and then, either the maternal genetic or permanent environment or both effects. The estimates of direct heritability for birth weight, weaning weight, pre-weaning daily gain, six-month weight, yearling weight and pre-weaning lamb survival were 0.08 ± 0.03, 0.20 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.05, 0.24 ± 0.06, 0.29 ± 0.14 and 0.14 ± 0.04, respectively. The maternal heritabilities were 0.29 ± 0.05, 0.31 ± 0.05, 0.40 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.57 and 0.02 ± 0.15 for weaning weight, pre-weaning daily gain, six-month weight, yearling weight and pre-weaning lamb survival, respectively. Genetic correlation between birth weight and pre-weaning lamb survival was negative (−0.36 ± 0.22), implying heavier lambs have low pre-weaning survival. For the other pairs of traits, genetic correlations ranging from 0.10 ± 0.16 between yearling weight and pre-weaning lamb survival to 0.98 ± 0.01 between weaning weight and pre-weaning daily gain were estimated. Overall, the present study showed that heritability is more likely to be overestimated if the maternal genetic and permanent environment effects are not taken into account. Parameters estimated in the current study can be used to design sheep breeding programs.

Abstract:As the economic level of individuals rises, so too does the demand for mutton. Enhancing the breeds of mutton sheep not only boosts production efficiency and economic benefits but also fosters the sustainable growth of the mutton sheep breeding industry. Thus, this study examines the early growth and reproductive traits of Tianmu Sainuo sheep, analyzing the genetic interactions among these traits to furnish a theoretical foundation for refining breeding strategies and expediting the genetic advancement of this breed. The investigation compiled 29,966 data entries, involving 111 sires for birth weight (BWT) and 113 for other metrics. The data encompassed 10,415 BWT records from 1,633 dams, 12,753 weaning weight (WWT) records from 1,570 dams, 12,793 average daily gain (ADG) records from 1,597 dams, and 13,594 litter size (LS) records from 1,499 dams. Utilizing the GLM procedure in SAS 9.2 software, the study analyzed the non-genetic influences on lamb BWT, WWT, ADG, and LS. Concurrently, DMU software estimated the variance components across various animal models for each trait. Employing the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and likelihood ratio test (LRT), six models were tested, incorporating or excluding maternal inheritance and environmental impacts, to identify the optimal model for deriving genetic parameters. The findings reveal that birth year (BY), birth quarter (BQ), birth type (BT), age of mother (AM), and birth sex (BS) exerted significant impacts on BWT, WWT, and ADG ( p < 0.01). Additionally, BQ and AM significantly influenced LS ( p < 0.01). The most accurate genetic evaluation model determined the heritability of BWT, WWT, ADG, and LS to be 0.0695, 0.0849, 0.0777, and 0.1252, respectively.

Abstract:The aim of present study was to estimate the genetic and phenotypic parameters for average daily gain traits of Sonadi sheep. Records of lambs were collected over a period of four years from Sonadi unit maintained at CVAS Navania (Rajasthan) under Mega Sheep Seed Project. Traits included for the study were ADG-1 from birth to weaning, ADG-2 from weaning to 6 month of age and ADG-3 from 6month to 12 month of age. Low estimates of heritability were observed for all average Daily Gain traits. However, estimates of genetic parameter with high sampling error do not agree with empirical results. The direct maternal genetic correlation (ram) was negative for all average daily gain traits. A negative estimate of σam resulted in increase in direct and maternal heritability pointing towards cross substitution effect in the partitioning of total variation. The estimates of Phenotypic correlation was observed as 0.13 ± 0.09, 0.13 ± 0.09 and -0.16 ± 0.08 between ADG1-ADG2, ADG1-ADG3 and ADG2-ADG3, respectively. All genetic and phenotypic correlation between daily gain traits showed weak association-ship.

Phenotypic relationships among early life traits and lifetime ewe production efficiency

Abstract:In least-squares analyses of variance, 10 ewe lamb traits were used, singly and in various combinations, to predict lifetime production efficiency. Ewes belonged to eight crossbred groups and were raised on two management systems for either 4 or 5 yr of production. Lifetime production efficiency components were total feed and ewe ownership cost, gross income and net revenue. A ewe lamb's type of birth, actual and adjusted weaning weight (WWt and AWWt), postweaning weight (PWWt) and first year gross income (FGROS) were significantly phenotypically related to one or more components of lifetime production efficiency. While triplets were better than either of the other two birth types, single-born ewes were better than twin-born ewes for lifetime production efficiency. Any of the three ewe lamb weights (AWWt, WWt or PWWt) appeared to be an accurate estimator of lifetime production efficiency. The effect of first year productivity was largely a part-whole relationship with lifetime production because the regression coefficients of subsequent lifetime production efficiency (not including first year production) on first year productivity were near zero. Postweaning average daily gain, ewe age at first estrus and date of first lambing (at approximately 12 mo of age) did not have significant relationships with lifetime production efficiency. When type of birth, date of birth, weaning weight and first year gross income were analyzed simultaneously, weaning weight and FGROS had the greatest effect on lifetime production efficiency. When AWWt and type of birth were considered simultaneously, both had significant relationships with lifetime production efficiency.

Abstract:Separation of autosomal and sex-linked direct additive genetic effects has significant role in sheep breeding programs. Hence, this study was conducted to determine the genetic parameters of autosomal and sex-linked effects for growth traits of Zandi sheep. The data set used in this study contained 7571 Zandi lambs, descendent of 220 sires and 1481 dams, which were collected from Zandi sheep breeding Station at Khojir, Tehran, Iran from 1992 to 2011. The fixed effects included of year (20 classes), season (winter and spring), sex (male or female), birth type (single or twin), and the age of dam (seven classes, 2–8 years old). The data were analyzed using REML methodology by WOMBAT software. In the most appropriate fitted model, based on Akaike's information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC), the values of direct autosomal heritabilities of birth weight (BW), kleiber ratio at weaning (KR), 6-month weight (6MW), and 9-month weight (9MW) were 0.12 ± 0.03, 0.29 ± 0.05, 0.14 ± 0.04, and 0.15 ± 0.04, respectively. Furthermore, weaning weight (WW), average daily gain from birth to weaning (ADG), and 12-month weight (12 MW) showed the values of 0.19 ± 0.03 and 0.22 ± 0.03, 0.13 ± 0.05 and 0.15 ± 0.03, and 0.15 ± 0.05 and 0.18 ± 0.05, respectively. Based on the best models through all traits, estimates of the direct sex-linked heritability ranged from 0.0 (WW, ADG, KR, and 6MW) to 0.02 ± 0.03 (12MW). The average of autosomal and sex-linked breeding values (BVs) of body growth traits except KR (for autosomal) and 9MW and 12MW (for sex-linked) were greater than zero. The Pearson's/Spearman's correlation coefficients varied between 0.344 and 0.599/0.30 and 0.61 for autosomal and sex-linked BVs. Direct autosomal and sex-linked additive correlations for growth traits were ranged from − 0.02 (BW-KR) to 0.98 (WW-ADG) and 0.04 (KR-9 MW) to 0.99 (WW-ADG), respectively. Our results revealed that the genetic parameters related to growth traits in Zandi sheep could be more useful in selection strategies.

Abstract:A total of 5 505 litter records of reproductive traits of Landrace,Yorkshire and Duroc sows were collected at Shanghai Xiangxin Swine Breeding Company from 2001 to 2006.Based on the fixed effect model,the least squares means of the total number borns,the number born alive,the litter weight at birth and the litter weight adjusted to 21-day-old were estimated to analyze the effect of parity,season and breed on reproductive performance.The result showed that the fixed effects of parity,season and breed on the four reproductive traits were extremely significant(P0.01).

Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine early reproductive traits and assess genetic parameters associated with them in Harnali crossbred ewes through Bayesian inference. The dataset encompasses 555 reproduction records spanning 24 years from 1998 to 2021. The traits under investigation include age at first lambing (AFL), weight at first lambing (WFL), and first lambing interval (FLI). First, least-squares modeling was conducted, incorporating fixed effects such as the period of birth and the dam's weight at lambing for the targeted traits. Subsequently, Bayesian estimation involved a series of animal models that accounted for direct additive effects, with or without maternal effects, along with significant fixed effects. The overall least-squares mean for AFL, WFL and FLI was observed as 851.49 ± 12.20 days, 27.5 ± 0.16 kg, 455.04 ± 10.66 days, respectively. The period of birth significantly influenced AFL and WFL, while the dam's weight at lambing showed a significant association with WFL only. Bayesian estimates revealed low direct heritability for AFL, WFL, and FLI, ranging from 0.12, 0.16 and 0.04, suggesting limited potential for improvement through selection. However, maternal effects accounted for a proportion of phenotypic variance ranging from 0.04 to 0.14 across these traits. It was concluded that enhancing reproductive efficiency in Harnali ewes would require a greater focus on management aspects, particularly feeding and breeding practices, while also considering maternal influences within the existing breeding plan.

Abstract:AIM: The present investigation was to study genetic characteristics of Harnali sheep with respect to growth performance and to estimate genetic parameters.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 22 years (1992-2013) data of growth traits of a 1603 synthetic population of Harnali sheep maintained at Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Hisar, was utilized for this study. A mixed methodology with regression on their dam's weight was used to study the effect of non-genetic factors on growth traits. Heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated using paternal half-sib analysis for body weight at various ages and average daily gain (ADG) for different growth periods.RESULT: The overall least squares mean of body weights recorded for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), six months body weight (SMW), one yearling body weight (YBW), average daily gain from birth to 3 months (ADG1) and average daily gain from 3 to 12 months (ADG2) were 3.35±0.05 kg, 12.41±0.08 kg, 16.30±0.12 kg, 21.88±0.08 kg, 100.66±0.86 g/day and 35.07±0.39 g/day, respectively. The effects of year of birth significantly (p<0.01) influenced the BW, WW, SMW, YWB, ADG1 and ADG2. The effects of sex of lamb significantly (p<0.01) influenced the BW, WW SMW, YWB, ADG1 and ADG2. The effects of dam's weight at lambing significantly (p<0.01) influenced BW, WW, SMW, YWB, ADG1 and ADG2. No definite trend was observed over the years for the averages of body weight and gain. The heritability estimates of BW, WW, SMW, YBW, ADG1 and ADG2 were 0.40±0.05, 0.38±0.05, 0.45±0.06, 0.29±0.05, 0.40±0.06 and 0.33±0.02, respectively. The male lambs were significantly heavier than females at all stages of growth. The heritability estimates were moderate for all the growth traits and high genetic correlations of BW and WW with SMW were found.CONCLUSION: Due to high heritability and positive correlations of SMW with other body weights and daily gain, it was concluded that selection on the basis of SMW would be the best approach to improve growth performance in Harnali sheep.

Abstract:We report a case of a 72-year-old male that underwent two sets of transrectal prostatic needle biopsy (TPNB) within 9 month period. Pathology showed unremarkable benign prostatic tissues in the first group of biopsies while extensive diffuse inflammation with the characteristic features of malakoplakia in the second set. Three cores in the repeat biopsy contained foci of prostatic adenocarcinoma as well. Occurrence of malakoplakia several months after TPNB in our case suggests that microorganisms may have been inoculated to the prostate during the biopsy procedure. We believe that malakoplakia must be added to the list of complications after TPNB.

Abstract:Context Despite the increased economic importance of reproductive rate in Australian Merinos, there have been low genetic improvements in reproductive performance over the past several decades. Genetically improving reproductive traits through direct selection is restricted by low heritability, low selection intensity directly on reproductive traits, high recording costs and lack of accurate maternal pedigrees in the majority of industry breeding programs. However, indirect selection via correlated traits may be useful as a supplement to direct selection or even on its own where reproduction records are not collected. Aims The aims of the present study were to determine whether various production and quality traits have the potential to be used as indirect selection criteria for genetically improving lifetime reproductive rate, but also whether their selection could be detrimental to reproduction via unfavourable correlations. Methods Reproductive traits studied included pregnancy rate (ewes scanned pregnant per ewe joined), fetal number (number of fetuses scanned per ewe joined), number of lambs born (per ewe joined), number of lambs weaned (per ewe joined) and ewe rearing ability (number of lambs weaned per fetuses scanned). Using data from the SA Selection Demonstration Flocks project (1997–2005), reproductive traits were modelled against various visual and production traits to estimate correlations. Key results Favourable genetic correlations with reproductive traits were estimated with adult ewe bodyweight (0.37–0.50), hogget eye muscle depth (HEMD, 0.40–0.57), fat depth (HFAT, 0.27–0.48) and hogget body (HBWS) and neck wrinkle scores (–0.13 to –0.50). However, the estimates for genetic correlations with hogget eye muscle depth and fat depth were lower when bodyweight was fitted as a covariate, being 0.11–0.35 and 0.17–0.32 respectively. Genetic correlations with ewe rearing ability were generally unfavourable (except those with hogget body and neck wrinkle scores, which were –0.24 and –0.15 respectively), but were either negligible (adult ewe bodyweight, hogget eye muscle depth, fibre diameter and fleece weight) or low in magnitude(fat depth). Unfavourable genetic correlations were observed between fibre diameter and reproductive traits (0.13–0.33). Fleece weight had negligible genetic correlations with all reproductive traits studied (–0.08 to 0.10). Predictions of response to index selection using indirect criteria of one or more of yearling weight, HBWS, HEMD and HFAT measurements projected substantial genetic gains in the number of lambs weaned per ewe joined (NLW). Without reproduction records on the dams of candidates for selection, indirect selection using all four indirect criteria (yearling weight, HBWS, HEMD and HFAT) was predicted to achieve 112–168% of the genetic gains of direct selection for NLW. When all indirect and direct criteria for NLW are combined as part of index selection, even larger gains for NLW are predicted (from 164–215% of direct NLW genetic gains). Conclusions Findings from the present study suggest that bodyweight, HEMD and HFAT and HBWS could be potentially beneficial as indirect selection criteria for lifetime reproductive rate. Selection for reduced fibre diameter is potentially detrimental to reproductive performance; however, selection for improved fleece weight is unlikely to have any effect on genetic gain for reproductive traits. Implications Use of indirect selection for lifetime reproductive could allow for genetic gain when either used with or without the direct selection criteria of reproduction records.

Abstract:The objectives of the current study were to estimate the genetic parameters and genetic trends for growth traits, and to assess inbreeding levels of Abera sheep under community-based breeding programs (CBBPs) in Ethiopia. General linear model consisting of the fixed effects of sex, breeder cooperative, season and birth type was used to analyze growth traits. Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated within each breeder cooperative following univariate animal model based on the restricted maximum likelihood method. All fixed effects influenced ( P < 0.05) the growth traits. Multivariate analysis was also employed to compute correlation estimates among growth traits. Based on the best fitted models, the direct heritability for weaning weight (WWT) and six-month weight (SMWT) in the six breeder cooperatives were in the ranges of 0.12 ± 0.12–0.38 ± 0.17 and 0.20 ± 0.10–0.49 ± 0.01, respectively. Range of positive genetic progress in WWT (0.15–0.44 kg) and SMWT (0.21–0.57 kg) was achieved in Abera sheep breeder cooperatives during selection years.

Abstract:This research aimed to assess the genetic polymorphism of the BMP15 gene concerning sex hormone levels and birth type in Awassi ewes. The genome DNA of 138 Awassi ewes was isolated (52 ewes produced a singleton and 86 produced twins). The BMP15 gene exon-2 was amplifiable by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), so two genotypes were identified based on 141 bp amplicons: TT and TA. A sequencing reaction revealed a novel mutation, c.50980646T>A, in the TA genotype. This single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) showed a high association (P≤0.01) with sex hormone levels and litter size, sheep containing this SNP had higher levels of sex hormones and larger litter sizes than sheep without it. Ewes with the TA genotype had a 1.89 litter size than their TT counterparts. Logistic regression confirmed that the c.50980646T>A SNP increased litter size. In conclusion, the c.50980646T>A SNP appears to be significantly related to reproductive traits (especially sex hormone levels and litter size) in Awassi sheep. With these results, mutations of the BMP15 gene are suitable for developing marker-assisted selection programs to increase Awassi sheep litter size.

Abstract:Maternal behaviour is important for lamb survival, as ewes perform many behaviours that affect the chances of a lamb surviving. Collecting maternal behaviour data directly at lambing is time-consuming and not considered suitable for acquiring the large volumes of data that would be required for using as selection criteria within commercial breeding flocks. The aim of this study was to investigate if a simple scoring system is heritable and assesses the expression of behaviours that reduce the probability of lamb mortality. Ewe behaviour was scored on a 3-point Maternal Assistance Score (MAS): (1) the ewe shows a high level of maternal interest (assumed if no intervention required); (2) the ewe shows limited interest in her lamb; and (3) the ewe shows no interest in her lamb. A total of 19 453 MAS were collected over 12 years, across 24 farms (including both indoor and outdoor lambing systems) and 12 different breed lines that make up the Innovis breeding programme. Ewe parity, breed, number of lambs carried, flock, lambing batch, lambing day within flock and pre-mating weight all had a significant effect on MAS (P < 0.05). The maternal assistance score was shown to be heritable (h2 = 0.05) and repeatable (0.10), positively genetically correlated to lambing difficulty (rg = 0.29) and amount of assistance the lamb required to suckle from the ewe (rg = 0.88), and negatively genetically correlated with the number of lambs successfully reared (rg = 0.49). This study shows that an easy-to-measure score can be used by shepherds with large breeding flocks, based on whether the ewe requires further assistance to support her lamb rearing. The score could be used in breeding programmes to select for lamb rearing ability in the future and potentially lead to an improvement in lamb welfare through a reduction in mortality.
Meta‐analysis of genetic parameters for growth traits in meat, wool and dual‐purpose sheep breeds in the world using a random‐effects model

Abstract:BACKGROUND: There is large variation in genetic parameters in literature for growth traits in sheep. Reliable estimation of genetic parameters is required for developing breeding programmes.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to aggregate results of different studies by meta-analysis to improve reliability of estimated parameters.METHODS: In the current study, 221 papers that have been published between 1995 and 2021 were reviewed. Using a random-effects model in the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, direct and maternal heritabilities, as well as, genetic and phenotypic correlations between growth traits were estimated in meat (M), wool (W) and dual-purpose (D) sheep breeds. The growth traits in this study were birth weight, 3-month weight, 6-month weight, 9-month weight and yearling weight.RESULTS: The combined direct heritability was the lowest for birth weight (0.190 ± 0.004, 0.198 ± 0.003 and 0.196 ± 0.004 for M, W and D breeds, respectively) and the highest for yearling weight (0.264 ± 0.010, 0.304 ± 0.005 and 0.285 ± 0.020 for M, W and D breeds, respectively). The maternal heritability was the lowest for yearling weight (0.085 ± 0.003, 0.055 ± 0.002 and 0.052 ± 0.005 for M, W and D breeds, respectively) and the highest for 6-month weight (0.240 ± 0.088, 0.164 ± 0.001 and 0.162 ± 0.006 for M, W and D breeds, respectively). The phenotypic and genetic correlations were lower between the weights measured at more distant intervals. The lowest genetic correlation was observed between birth weight and yearling weight (0.290 ± 0.051 for W breeds).CONCLUSIONS: The small standard errors could indicate that the aggregation of results from different studies improved the reliability of estimated parameters and reduced range of 95% confidence intervals. Hence, the results could be used with greater level of confidence in sheep breeding programmes.

Abstract:Body weight is an important economic trait for sheep meat production, and its genetic improvement is considered one of the main goals in the sheep breeding program. Identifying genomic regions that are associated with growth-related traits accelerates the process of animal breeding through marker-assisted selection, which leads to increased response to selection. In this study, we conducted a weighted single-step genome-wide association study (WssGWAS) to identify potential candidate genes for direct and maternal genetic effects associated with birth weight (BW) and weaning weight (WW) in Baluchi sheep. The data used in this research included 13,408 birth and 13,170 weaning records collected at Abbas-Abad Baluchi Sheep Breeding Station, Mashhad-Iran. Genotypic data of 94 lambs genotyped by Illumina 50K SNP BeadChip for 54,241 markers were used. The proportion of variance explained by genomic windows was calculated by summing the variance of SNPs within 1 megabase (Mb). The top 10 window genomic regions explaining the highest percentages of additive and maternal genetic variances were selected as candidate window genomic regions associated with body weights. Our findings showed that for BW, the top-ranked genomic regions (1 Mb windows) explained 4.30 and 4.92% of the direct additive and maternal genetic variances, respectively. The direct additive genetic variance explained by the genomic window regions varied from 0.31 on chromosome 1 to 0.59 on chromosome 8. The highest (0.84%) and lowest (0.32%) maternal genetic variances were explained by genomic windows on chromosome 10 and 17, respectively. For WW, the top 10 genomic regions explained 6.38 and 5.76% of the direct additive and maternal genetic variances, respectively. The highest and lowest contribution of direct additive genetic variances were 1.37% and 0.42%, respectively, both explained by genomic regions on chromosome 2. For maternal effects on WW, the highest (1.38%) and lowest (0.41%) genetic variances were explained by genomic windows on chromosome 2. Further investigation of these regions identified several possible candidate genes associated with body weight. Gene ontology analysis using the DAVID database identified several functional terms, such as translation repressor activity, nucleic acid binding, dehydroascorbic acid transporter activity, growth factor activity and SH2 domain binding.

Abstract:This study aims to estimate genetic parameters and genetic trends for early growth and reproductive traits of Doyogena sheep. Data used in the study were collected over 6 years (2013–2018). Studied traits were birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT), 6-month weight (SMWT), average daily gains from birth to weaning (ADG0-3), average daily gains from weaning to 6-month age (ADG3-6), average daily gain from birth to 6-month age (ADG0-6), litter size (LS), lambing interval (LI), age at first lambing (AFL), and annual reproductive rate (ARR). (Co) variance components and genetic parameters were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML). The analyses were carried out using WOMBAT program. Univariate analysis was applied to estimate genetic parameters. Six different animal models were fitted by including or excluding maternal effects. The direct heritability estimates for BWT, WWT, SMWT, ADG0-3, ADG3-6 and ADG0-6 were 0.33 ± 0.06, 0.31 ± 0.06, 0.14 ± 0.06, 0.13 ± 0.04, 0.11 ± 0.07, and 0.02 ± 0.05 respectively. Direct heritability for LS, LI, and AFL were 0.28 ± 0.12, 0.20 ± 0.5, and 0.001 ± 0.3, respectively. The maternal heritability estimates for BWT, WWT, and LS were 0.24 ± 0.12, 0.60 ± 0.07, and 0.24 ± 0.08, respectively. The genetic correlation between BWT with WWT and BWT with SMWT were 0.21 ± 0.07 and 0.21 ± 0.09, respectively. Genetic progress for most of the studied traits has shown promising improvements. Thus, continuation of selection, therefore, suggested for more improvements in the performance of Doyogena sheep. Direct heritability estimates decrease as lamb age increases and selection based on earlier body weight will be more efficient.
Identification of Genes Targeted in South African Merino and Afrino Sheep Populations Under Long-Term Selection for Reproduction and Body Weight

Abstract:Abstract Background: Reproductive performance and body weight are of the utmost economic importance in determining the efficiency of sheep production. Simultaneous selection for increased reproductive performance and early growth traits is a common strategy in many flocks, but ambiguous results regarding the relationship between reproduction and body weight have been reported. The objective of this study was to perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in two South African Merino flocks and an Afrino sheep flock that were selected for both reproduction and body weight over decades. The GWAS aimed to identify SNPs associated with genes affecting the traits number of lambs born (NLB), number of lambs weaned (NLW), total weight of lamb weaned (TWW) and body weight (BW) and thus to ascertain which genes were targeted through directional selection. Results: In the GWAS, 16 SNP markers associated with reproductive traits were identified among the three populations, while 15 SNPs were associated with body weight. These SNPs were linked respectively to 26 and 21 documented genes in the sheep genome. Most of these genes were previously associated in literature with reproduction related, as well as with growth related traits in various farm animal species. This study, supported by results from previous studies performed on sheep and cattle, identified the following genes that warrant further investigation as to their functions and processes relating to growth and reproduction in sheep: MAP7D1, TRAPPC3, THRAP3, TRMP8 , SPP2 , HDAC9, ZFHX3, SIX6, C14orf39, TAF4B, TRSP1 EYA2 , RBMS3, STL38L, BSPH1, LIG1, CABP5 and ELSPBP1. Conclusions: Long-term selection in the flocks for both body weight and reproductive traits, and especially on the composite trait TWW, have favoured genes with pleiotropic effects influencing both groups of traits. SNPs associated with these pleiotropic genes were detected in the association analyses for the various traits.
