Abstract:Abstract Purpose. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) face various physical and mental limitations resulting from different renal replacement therapy (RRT) modalities. Renal transplantation (Tx) is considered as the treatment that impacts most on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This study aimed to analyze and compare the HRQOL and depression levels of patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) and Tx.Methods. A single-center cross-sectional sample of 112 HD patients, 68 PD patients and 97 Tx patients participated in our questionnaire survey. The HRQOL and depression levels were assessed through the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Mental Health Inventory (MHI-5), respectively. The multiple linear regression model was performed to examine the factors associated with each of the HRQOL scale scores. Results. The SF-36 HRQOL of Tx patients differed significantly from that in HD and PD groups in all eight dimensions and two components (all P<0.001). More than 45% of patients in each group were facing depressive symptoms. HD patients (63.4%) and PD (67.6%) patients were more depressive compared with Tx patients (45.4%, P =0.006). Depression in ESRD patients contributed to a worse quality of life (P<0.001). Patients ranging in age from 31 to 50, having full-time jobs, receiving Tx and without depression were associated with better HRQOL in the domain of Physical Component Scores (PCS). Patients with unemployment, dismissal or being looking for a job, receiving Tx and without depression were associated with better HRQOL in the domain of Mental Component Scores (MCS).Conclusions. Tx patients had better HRQOL and less depressive symptoms than HD and PD patients. Depression was related to an impaired HRQOL, which was common in ESRD patients. The severity of depression in ESRD patients and the effectiveness of Tx on HRQOL improvement need to be underscored.

Abstract:Background: Despite the growing concern worldwide regarding the quality of life (QoL) and mental well-being among chronic kidney disease (CKD), a few research has been done to address this issue. The study aims to measure depression, anxiety, and QoL prevalence among Jordanian patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis and how all of these variables are correlated. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, interview-based study on patients at the Jordan University Hospital (JUH) dialysis unit. Sociodemographic factors were collected, and the prevalence of depression, anxiety disorder, and QOL was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ9), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD7), and the WHOQOL-BREF, respectively. Results: In a study of 66 patients, 92.4% had depression, and 83.3% had generalised anxiety disorder. Females had significantly higher depression scores than males (mean = 6.2 ± 3.77 vs 2.9 ± 2.8, p < 0.001), and single patients had significantly higher anxiety scores than married patients (mean = 6.1 ± 6 vs 2.9 ± 3.5, p = 0.03). Age was positively correlated with depression scores (rs= 0.269, p = 0.03), and QOL domains showed an indirect correlation with GAD7 and PHQ9 scores. Males had higher physical functioning scores than females (mean = 64.82 vs 58.87, p = 0.016), and patients who studied in universities had higher physical functioning scores than those with only school education (mean of College/University = 78.81 vs mean of School Education = 66.46, p = 0.046). Patients taking <5 medications had higher scores in the environmental domain (p = 0.025). Conclusion: The high prevalence of depression, GAD, and low QOL in ESRD patients on dialysis highlights the need for caregivers to provide psychological support and counselling for these patients and their families. This can promote psychological health and prevent the onset of psychological disorders.

Abstract:Abstract Background Hemodialysis has been shown to have an adverse impact on the emotional status of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Common associated psychological problems include depression, anxiety, fatigue, decreased quality of life, and an increased risk for suicide. This cross-sectional study aims to psychiatric assessment of ESRD patients on dialysis and patients’ quality of life (QOL). One hundred and seventeen patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis aged from 26 years to 77 years were enrolled from the Dialysis Unit at Shebin El Kom Teaching Hospital and Menoufia University Hospital and were approved by the local medical ethical committee. Cases were selected during the study period from October 2018 till May 2019. A semi-structured interview, clinical psychiatric assessment, psychometric test measuring psychiatric disorders, and psychometric test measuring QOL were measured. Results A reduction in scores of all domains of QOL was observed in ESRD patients with depression compared with patients without depression. There was a statistically significant correlation between QOL and presence of clinical illness either diabetes or hypertension among ESRD patients ( P < 0.05). It was found that there was a reduction in all domains of QOL in patients with clinical illness compared with patients without. Conclusions Incidence of psychiatric illness among end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis is high. The most prevalent psychiatric disorders among these patients are depression and anxiety disorders. Poor quality of life (QOL) was also observed in ESRD patients.
Symptom Prevalence and the Negative Emotional States in End-Stage Renal Disease Patients with or without Renal Replacement Therapy: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

Abstract:Background: Limited comparative data are available on the symptom severity and burden of dialyzed versus nondialyzed end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients and their association with negative emotional states. Objective: To investigate the prevalence of symptom burden and severity of ESRD patients and correlate the findings with their psychological status. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of dialyzed (N = 87) and nondialyzed (N = 100) patients. The symptom burden and severity were determined using the Dialysis Symptom Index (DSI) and the psychological assessment using Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21). Results: Symptom severity evaluated using the DSI was comparable in both groups with fatigue as the most common symptom (n = 141, 75.4%), followed by sleep-related, sexual dysfunction, and dry skin problems. The symptom burden for worrying, dry skin and mouth, decreased appetite, numbness, and leg swelling were significant in not dialyzed group (p < 0.05).The DASS-21 scores revealed that 11% of patients were depressed, 21.8% were stressed, and 15.6% were anxious (p < 0.030). The prevalence of psychological disturbances was associated with high symptom burden regardless of their treatment options (p < 0.005). Dialyzed patients showed a positive psychological status trend on DASS-21 assessment. The not dialyzed group consisted of 34% from comprehensive conservative group, 26% of choice-restricted conservative care, and 40% with no definitive future plan. Conclusions: There was no difference in the prevalence of symptom burden and severity, irrespective of the type of treatment. Psychological disturbances were associated with higher symptom burden and severity and, therefore, should be screened thoroughly to achieve optimal ESRD management.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:This study aimed to identify the association of factors and poorer mental health status and examinate the correlation between mental health status and quality of life (QOL) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.METHODS:A total of 190 patients were included in this observational, cross-sectional study. Psychological states of ESRD patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis were evaluated by the Chinese version symptom checklist-90 (SCL-90) and QOL was assessed using the Chinese Version Kidney Disease Quality of Life-Short Form (KDQOL-SF).RESULTS:A total of 190 patients with a mean age of 61.68 (13.39) years were included in this study. Multiple stepwise linear regression analyses suggested that when controlling for the confounding variables, prealbumin had the significant influence on average positive factors (Coef., -0.647; 95% CI: -1.314, 0.020; P=0.057), somatization (Coef., -1.334; 95% CI: -2.451, -0.217; P=0.020), obsessive-compulsive (Coef., -1.396; 95% CI: -2.255, -0.537; P=0.002), depression (Coef., -1.241; 95% CI: -2.252, -0.229; P=0.017), phobic anxiety (Coef., -2.576; 95% CI: -3.786, -1.367; P<0.001). In the correlation analysis, the score of average positive factors was significantly correlated with the score of the overall health rating (Coef., -0.343; P<0.001), symptom/problem (Coef., -0.337; P<0.001), effects of kidney disease on daily life (Coef., -0.198; P=0.006), burden of kidney disease (Coef., -0.233; P=0.001), cognitive function (Coef., 0.363; P<0.001), quality of social interaction (Coef., 0.292; P<0.001), social support (Coef., 0.237; P=0.001), physical functioning (Coef., -0.339; P<0.001), pain (Coef., 0.362; P<0.001), general health (Coef., -0.332; P<0.001), mental health (Coef., -0.537; P<0.001), social functioning (Coef., 0.202; P=0.005), vitality (Coef., -0.478; P<0.001), respectively.CONCLUSIONS:In our study, prealbumin, type 2 diabetes mellitus, heart rate, educational level, duration of hemodialysis, coronary artery disease, heart failure, marital status, hemoglobin A1C, hemoglobin were significantly associated with poorer mental health status of ESRD patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis, and patients with poorer psychological states were more significantly associated with decreased QOL. The results may help clinicians to adopt an effective treatment for early interventions, thus improving the QOL in such population.

Abstract:Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a significant impact on the life of patients undergoing chronic periodic hemodialysis. It negatively affects their social, economic and family status, and particularly their psychological well-being. The aim of this study was to investigate the perception of the quality of life (QoL) and psychological burden of patients undergoing hemodialysis. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 63 patients. Τhe majority were men (63.5%), and the mean age of the patients was 66.7 years (±12.9) with 61.9% aged 65–89 years. Data collection was performed in 2021 using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Kidney Disease and Quality of Life-Short Form (KDQOL-SFTM) research tools, and their relationships were assessed using parametric and non-parametric methods. Moderate to mild levels of Anxiety and Depression were found. Physical and Mental Composite Scores were mild to moderate, with the Mental Composite Score being significantly higher (p < 0.05). Anxiety and Depression were significantly correlated with lower QoL (p < 0.05), while a higher educational level was correlated with lower Depression Symptom Levels and higher QoL for Disease Symptoms, Disease Effects, Physical Functioning, Vitality and Overall Health (p < 0.05). A higher number of years of hemodialysis was correlated with lower levels of Anxiety and higher levels of Quality of Sleep (p < 0.05). Ease of Access to the Hemodialysis Unit was correlated with lower levels of Social Support (p < 0.05). The highest Mental Composite Scores were also correlated with a higher level of education, with patients living in urban areas, and with a higher monthly income (p < 0.05). Patients with moderate or severe levels of Anxiety and Depression had a lower QoL in the Physical and Mental Composite Scores, indicating their dependence on the appropriate medical, nursing and social environment in order to attain higher levels of well-being, leading to the improvement of patients’ health. This study was not registered.

We aimed to investigate the prevalences of depression and anxiety among patients undergoing renal replacement therapy. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. METHODS: Patients' depression and anxiety levels were assessed using the Beck Inventory. The independent variables were the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Charlson Comorbidity Index and Global Subjective Assessment, along with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: 205 patients were included. Depression and anxiety symptoms were detected in 41.7% and 32.3% of dialysis patients and 13.3% and 20.3% of transplantation patients, respectively. Lower SF-36 mental summary scores were associated with depression among transplantation patients (odds ratio, OR: 0.923; 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.85-0.99; P = 0.03) and dialysis patients (OR: 0.882; 95% CI: 0.83-0.93; P ≤ 0.001). Physical component summary was associated with depression among dialysis patients (OR: 0.906; 95% CI: 0.85-0.96; P = 0.001). Loss of vascular access (OR: 3.672; 95% CI: 1.05-12.78; P = 0.04), comorbidities (OR: 1.578; 95% CI: 1.09-2.27; P = 0.01) and poorer SF-36 mental (OR: 0.928; 95% CI: 0.88-0.97; P = 0.002) and physical (OR: 0.943; 95% CI: 0.89-0.99; P = 0.03) summary scores were associated with anxiety among dialysis patients. CONCLUSIONS: Depression and anxiety symptoms occurred more frequently among patients undergoing dialysis. Quality of life, comorbidities and loss of vascular access were associated factors.

Abstract:BackgroundPatients with terminal chronic kidney disease (CKDT) requiring renal replacement therapies (RRT) undergo important changes in living habits and frequently need caregiving. These patients and their caregivers are risk groups for the development of physical and psychological symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anxiety, depression, stress, fatigue, social support, and quality of life in patients with CKD and their caregivers.MethodThis cross sectional study was conducted with 21 patients and their caregivers, from January to September 2015. We included patients aged over 18 years, with at least 6 months on dialysis treatment, and caregivers who were family members. The participants’ social, demographic, clinical, laboratory, and psychological variables were evaluated. A descriptive analysis and an examination of the association between patients and caregivers were performed.ResultsAmong patients, we observed that 38.1% had symptoms that indicated anxiety and depression. The average score for practical social support was 3.15 ± 0.769 and that for emotional social support was 3.16 ± 0.79. As for fatigue, 14.3% of patients reported being ‘extremely tired’ and 14.3% reported that they engaged in all the activities they usually performed before the illness. Further, 57.1% presented stress, and of these, 66.7% were at the resistance stage, with predominance of psychological symptoms in 60.0%. The quality of life domain in terms of functional capacity (FC) presented a correlation with haemoglobin level (r = 0.581, p = 0.006) and non-anaemic patients presented better FC. Among caregivers, we observed symptoms that indicated anxiety and depression in 33.3% of the sample. Caregivers exhibited an average score of 2.88 ± 0.77 for practical social support and 3.0 ± 0.72 for emotional social support. Further, 14.3% reported being ‘extremely tired’ and 28.8% reported that they engaged in all activities that they usually performed before the patient’s illness. When comparing the two groups (patients vs. caregivers), we observed that they presented similar results for the presence of anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Caregivers received less social support than patients did. Both groups presented similar predominance of stress levels; however, patients presented more predominance of psychological symptoms. With reference to quality of life, patients and caregivers presented similar results on the social aspects, vitality, mental health, and mental domains.ConclusionThe mental health characteristics of patients and caregivers were similar, and within the context of dialysis for renal disease, both must undergo specific interventions.

Abstract:<span><br/>We aimed in this study to assess the quality of life for kidney-ill patients using Kidney Disease Quality of Life Instrument-SF36 (KDQOL-SF36) and the impact of other demographic, clinical, and social factors on patients' QOL. The quality of life was assessed using an Arabic version of KDQOL-36. The KDQOL-36 subscales Physical Component Summary (PCS), Mental Component Summary (MCS), Burden of Kidney Disease, and Effects of Kidney Disease were calculated. The effect of sex, diabetic status, diabetes mellitus, marital and status employment status, etc. on these subscales was evaluated. Reliability was determined by calculating Cronbach's alpha. A total of 254 patients were enrolled. The mean age was 58.2 (standard deviation 18.2) years; 61% were male, 56.7% diabetic and 20.1% were employed. The mean domain scores on the PCS, MCS, burden of kidney disease, and effects of kidney disease subscales were 49.4, 38.7, 52.6, and 37.2, respectively. Afternoon shift patients score highest among all shifts in MCS and PCS (<i>P</i> = 0.0001). The MCS score (38.7 ± 28.7) was significantly lower than PCS (49.4 ± 16.5) (<i>P</i> = 0.0001). The "effect of kidney disease" subscale was higher in males (<i>P</i> = 0.02), employed patients (<i>P</i> = 0.02), in the afternoon dialysis shift (0.0001). For PCS higher scores were seen in males (<i>P</i> = 0.0001), in non-diabetics (compared to diabetics) (<i>P</i> = 0,006), in the employed patients (<i>P</i> = 0.02). The highest score was seen in the "burden of kidney disease" subscale and the lowest in the "effects of kidney disease" subscale. Higher scores were seen in males, in nondiabetics, in the employed patients.<br/></span>

Abstract:BACKGROUND The impact of haemodialysis (HD) and kidney transplantation on quality of life (QoL) is often underestimated due to a lack of comparative studies with other patient groups. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional cohort study in 168 patients including HD patients, kidney transplant recipients (KTR), patients with a haematological malignancy either receiving chemotherapy or in remission and healthy controls. All participants completed the 36-item short form survey of health-related quality of life, the Checklist Individual Strength and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale questionnaire. RESULTS HD patients and haematological patients undergoing chemotherapy were more frequently severely fatigued (53.3% and 50% of cases) compared with KTR (33.3%), haematological patients in remission (23.3%) and healthy controls (12.1%, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in anxiety rates. HD patients and haematological patients undergoing chemotherapy were most likely to be depressed (33.3% and 25%), compared with 16.7% of KTR, 20% of haematological patients in remission and 8.6% of healthy controls (P = 0.066). KTR reported the largest positive health change (+27%, P < 0.001), but still had a lower overall QoL than healthy controls, comparable to haematological patients in remission. HD and chemotherapy patients reported the lowest QoL scores. CONCLUSIONS Fatigue and depression are common in HD patients, resulting in a low QoL, comparable to haematological patients receiving chemotherapy. KTR do better, with scores similar to patients with a haematological malignancy in remission, but still have a lower QoL than healthy controls.

Abstract:Objectives: The measurement of language development in hearing-impaired children is an important step in assessing the appropriateness of an intervention. We proposed a set of language tests (the Assessment Package for Language Development in Japanese Hearing-Impaired Children [ALADJIN]) to evaluate the development of practical communication skills. This package consisted of communication skills (TQAID), comprehensive (PVT-R and SCTAW) and productive vocabulary (WFT), comprehensive and productive syntax (STA), and the STRAW. Methods: A total of 638 children with greater than 70-dB hearing impairment were subjected to this set of language tests. Additional tests, including the PARS, the RCPM, and parental questionnaires, were administered to assess the backgrounds of the children. Results: A trimodal distribution was observed among hearing-impaired children by the histogram-based analysis of each test. Conclusions: The ALADJIN is a useful Japanese-language evaluation kit for hearing-impaired children.

Abstract:Abstract Formycin, 2-aminopurine ribonucleoside, and 2,6-diaminopurine ribonucleoside are analogues of adenosine in base pairing and in a wide variety of enzymatic reactions. These chromophores, in contrast to adenine and other naturally occurring bases, are fluorescent under physiological conditions. Another noteworthy feature of these analogues is that they can be selectively excited in the presence of normal bases because their absorption bands occur at longer wave lengths. The fluorescence properties of these compounds, and of their phosphorylated derivatives, over a wide range of temperature, pH, and ionic strength, are reported here. Incorporation of formycin or 2-aminopurine into a perfectly alternating ribocopolymer results in a 100-fold reduction of the quantum yield of fluorescence. The residual fluorescence comes from chromophores at the ends of the polymer. Thermal denaturation of the helical structure is accompanied by a 3- to 10-fold increase in quantum yield. The pH and temperature dependence of the fluorescence of transfer RNA with formycin residue in place of the terminal adenosine indicates that the terminal formycin residue interacts with other parts of the transfer RNA molecule. Some potential applications of these analogues in studies of the structure and function of nucleic acids and proteins are: analysis of protein-nucleic acid interaction, polynucleotide conformation and conformational transitions, enzyme-coenzyme interaction, and nuclease assay.

Abstract:<h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> BACKGROUND</h3><p>Cardiovascular disease‐associated morbidity and mortality are reportedly higher in hemodialysis (HD) patients compared with peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. However, few studies have estimated changes in state of depression and cognitive impairment in patients undergoing HD and PD. The present study evaluated the impact of HD or PD on patients' quality of life (QoL), cognitive impairment, and depression status over two years.</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> METHODS</h3><p>This 24‐month observational, prospective study included 45 HD and 30 PD patients. Patients were assessed before and every 12 months after starting dialysis for 24 months. Measurements included QoL [36‐Item Short‐Form Health Survey (SF‐36)], cognitive impairment [Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE)], depressive state [Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES‐D)], grip strength, and 24‐h urine volume (UV).</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> RESULTS</h3><p>Physical and social component scores of the SF‐36 significantly improved in PD patients at 24 months compared with those observed at baseline (42.8 vs. 39.4; <i>P</i> < 0.05 and 46.4 vs. 37.3; <i>P</i> < 0.05, respectively); however, scores remained unchanged in HD patients. MMSE scores were significantly decreased at 12 and 24 months in HD patients (<b>29.0 vs. 26.0, 25.0</b>; <i>P</i> < 0.05), but remained unchanged in PD patients. Moreover, CES‐D scores significantly worsened at 24 months in HD patients (12.8 vs. 16.5), but remained unchanged in PD. Preservation of UV and grip strength was associated with SF‐36, CES‐D, and MMSE scores. </p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> CONCLUSIONS</h3><p>Our findings indicate that PD is associated with higher QoL and recovery from cognitive failure compared with HD.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and renal transplantation on the quality of life of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and analyze the influencing factors. METHODS A total of 162 ESRD patients who received maintenance hemodialysis, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, and renal transplantation from February 2017 to March 2018 in our hospital were divided into a hemodialysis group, a peritoneal dialysis group, and a renal transplantation group. The baseline clinical data, serum indices, as well as environmental factors such as education level, marital status, work, residential pattern, household income, and expenditure were recorded. The quality of life was assessed using the short-form 36-item (SF-36) scale reflecting the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and the Mental Component Summary (MCS). One-way analysis of variance and logistic stepwise multiple regression analysis were performed to analyze the factors influencing the quality of life. RESULTS The renal transplantation group had the highest average scores for all dimensions of the SF-36 scale. The PCS and MCS scores of this group were higher than those of the hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis groups. The peritoneal dialysis group had higher scores for physical functioning, physical role, bodily pain, general health, mental health, PCS, and MCS than those of the hemodialysis group. Age, HGB, GLU, and ALP were the main factors influencing PCS. Age, education level, residential pattern, medication expenditure, and monthly per capita income mainly affected MCS. CONCLUSION In terms of quality of life, renal transplantation is superior to peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.

Depression, anxiety and adjustment in renal replacement therapy: a quality of life assessment

Abstract:Objectives: To measure the quality of life (QOL) of patients on RRT with regard to depression, anxiety, and adjustment to illness. Material: The study was conducted between 1996 and 1998 at a teaching hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The study population included 125 patients (transplant n = 64, hemodialysis n = 42 and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis [CAPD] n = 19). Methods: The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS) were used for patient assessment. Results were analyzed using the Kruskall-Wallis, Mann-Whitney and ANOVA tests. Results: Depression scores were higher for hemodialysis patients compared with transplant patients (H = 15.22; p < 0.005). CAPD patients had intermediate scores (no statistical difference). As far as anxiety was concerned, no statistical difference was observed when the groups were compared. In terms of adjustment to illness, hemodialysis patients were significantly less well adjusted than transplant patients (H = 23.34; p < 0.001). Patients on CAPD had intermediate scores, with no significant difference compared with the other two groups. Conclusion: The overall quality of life of transplant patients is higher than that of hemodialysis patients.

Abstract:Aim and background: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) in end-stage kidney disease (ESRD) patients on maintenance hemodialysis through the Missoula-Vitas Quality of Life Index-15 (MVQOLI-15) to identify factors affecting their well-being. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Dialysis Unit of the Nephrology Department, Nishtar Hospital Multan. Over six months, 140 eligible patients were enrolled using non-probability consecutive sampling. Participants aged 18-80 years on maintenance hemodialysis for at least six months were evaluated using the MVQOLI-15 questionnaire assessing symptoms, function, interpersonal, well-being, and transcendence dimensions of QoL. Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26 (Released 2019; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York). Inferential statistical tests, including the t-test for comparing two groups and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for comparing multiple groups, were utilized to determine the significance of differences in QoL scores among different demographic and clinical categories. P-values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The study analyzed 140 hemodialysis patients, with a mean age of 52.41 ± 16.31 years and an average hemodialysis duration of 4.55 ± 2.46 years. Most participants were aged 61-80 years (35.7%), had secondary education (44.3%), and were married (67.1%). QoL scores, measured using the MVQOLI, indicated mean values for symptoms at 4.51 ± 10.71, function at 5.77 ± 8.04, interpersonal at 7.49 ± 13.67, well-being at -13.60 ± 7.11, transcendence at 8.24 ± 13.12, and a total score of 16.24 ± 2.75. Significant findings include the following: females had higher symptom scores (p=0.001) and lower well-being scores (p=0.000); younger patients (<30 years) had higher function scores (p=0.054); patients on hemodialysis three times per week had higher function scores (p=0.006); patients taking 1 to 3 pills per day had higher transcendence scores (p=0.000); unmarried patients had higher symptoms scores (p=0.064) and lower well-being scores (p=0.004); and illiterate patients had higher symptoms (p=0.005) and transcendence scores (p=0.034). In total score, patients on hemodialysis once per week reported significantly better scores (p=0.011). Conclusion: This study highlights varied QoL experiences among hemodialysis patients, with transcendence scoring the highest and well-being, the lowest. Demographic factors such as age, gender, and education level significantly impact the QoL dimensions. Understanding these findings can guide personalized interventions to improve the well-being of hemodialysis patients.

Abstract:ObjectivesTo investigate anxiety, depression, and related factors in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving maintenance hemodialysis and provide a reference for the establishment of a healthier life for such patients.MethodsA total of 81 patients were enrolled in the study. Qualified participants filled out self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and depression self-assessment scale (SDS) questionnaires as well as assessments of health knowledge and health self-efficacy. Linear regression analysis was performed to relate demographic factors, lifestyle habits, and nutrition parameters to SDS and SAS score indices.ResultsThe mean SAS and SDS score indices for the 81 patients were 52.96 and 46.71, respectively; 56 patients (69.1 %) had a depressive disorder (SDS score ≥ 50), and 31 patients (36.9 %) had anxiety symptoms (SAS score ≥ 50). SAS score index correlated with gender (p < .05) and history of alcohol use (p < .01), whereas SDS score index correlated with administration of erythropoietin (EPO) (p < .05) as well as gender and history of alcohol use.ConclusionHistory of alcohol consumption may predict less depressive symptoms and more anxiety among Chinese patients living in a northeastern Chinese city with ESRD. EPO administration may reduce anxiety in patients with ESRD. Female patients were more prone to anxiety, whereas males were more likely to show symptoms of depression. These factors should be evaluated by nephrologists treating patients with ESRD.

Abstract:Introduction: In chronic diseases, QoL depends on several factors such as the type and duration of the disease, its treatment and side effects, the severity of symptoms, medication effects, patient age, limitations and self-care capacity. In chronic kidney disease it has also become a measure of health outcome.Objective: assess the association between QoL and socioeconomic, lifestyle and clinical factors of patients on HD.Methods: This is a cross-sectional epidemiological census, carried out among 1,024 patients on hemodialysis from all hemodialysis units at the metropolitan region in the Espirito Santo's, Brazil . Sociodemographic, lifestyle and clinical characteristics data were used. QoL was assessed using the Short-Form health Survey-36 (SF-36). Data were analysed by multiple linear regression.Results: The best QoL was represented by mental health (72.16) and the worst QoL by the physical aspect (26.78). After multiple linear regression, predictors of QoL were identified, with emphasis on males, a predictor of better QoL for 5 of the 8 domains and the summaries of the physical and mental components. Education, associated with 5 domains, gives greater reference to income. Physical activity was a predictor of 7 of the 8 QoL domains and the summary of the physical component. Among the clinical variables, the number of complications is associated with 7 of the 8 domains and summaries of the physical and mental components.Conclusion: Male sex is highlighted as a predictor of better physical and mental health and elderly people with better mental health, despite the impairment in physical health. The absence of physical activity is associated with worse physical and mental health. Clinically, having 3 or more intradialytic complications was associated with worse physical and mental QoL.

Abstract:Background: Patients who are on hemodialysis (HD) and are waiting for kidney transplantation encounter various psychological issues. Objective: The current research aimed to compare the effectiveness of regular nursing care with that of nursing care coupled with dedicated psychological counseling in patients who were on HD before they underwent kidney transplantation. Methods: Baseline data were collected 1 month before kidney transplantation in patients of both the control (patients who received general nursing care between August 2011 and June 2015) and intervention (patients who received nursing care and psychological counseling between June 2015 and July 2018) groups. The Mental Status Scale in Non-Psychiatric Settings (MSSNS) was administered to assess and record the psychological status. Clinicodemographic and end-stage renal disease (ESRD)-related details, including duration of dialysis, causes for ESRD, the number of dialysis sessions performed before transplantation, and MSSNS scores, were recorded and compared between the groups. Results: A total of 37 patients were enrolled, including 19 in the control group and 18 in the intervention group. The number of dialysis sessions performed before transplantation was 143 (26, 564) and 227.5 (39, 767), and dialysis duration was 20.4 ± 14.5 and 14.4 ± 12.1 months in the intervention and control groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in baseline negative emotions between the two groups ( P > 0.05). The psychological intervention group reported significantly lower anxiety, depression, anger, and loneliness scores than the control group ( P < 0.05). Conclusion: Psychological counseling before kidney transplantation in patients on HD could reduce their negative emotions and enhance mental well-being.
