Abstract:Four cases (2 children and 2 adults) of spontaneous occlusion of the circle of Willis were studied using EEG, somatosensory evoked potential (SEP), cerebral angiography and CT scan. The following results were obtained. 1) Among the above described parameters, SEP was the most useful to detect the ischemic change in the thalamus when the obstruction of the posterior part of the circle of Willis extends, even before a low density lesion of the thalamus appears on CT. 2) In child cases, a decrease in the amplitude N3 of SEP was observed after hyperventilation. It was speculated that this finding of SEP might be correlated with the mild cortical ischemia due to vasoconstriction and "rebuild up" phenomenon in EEG after hyperventilation.

Abstract:Angiotensin I (ANG I) was isolated from incubates of plasma and kidney extracts of the river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis, using eel vasopressor activity as an assay during purification. Its sequence was Asn-Arg-Val-Tyr-Val-His-Pro-Phe-Thr-Leu as determined by the sequence analysis and mass spec-trometry. The sequence was confirmed by identity of the elution profile with the synthetic peptide in two different reverse-phase columns of high-performance liquid chromatography. Lamprey ANG I produced dorsal-aortic pressor responses in L. fluviatilis but the rise was very small in comparison to that produced by angiotensin II. Angiotensin III produced an even bigger increase. It was not possible to demonstrate a difference in response to Asn1 (lamprey) ANG I and Asp1 (human) ANG I. The present study directly demonstrated the presence and biological activity of the renin-angiotensin system in the most primitive extant vertebrates, the cyclostomes. Thus the renin-angiotensin system is a phylogenetically old hormonal system that is present throughout the vertebrates.

Abstract:Hydrogels are a versatile category of biomaterials that have been widely applied in the fields of biomedicine for the last several decades. The three-dimensional polymeric crosslinked hydrophilic structures of the hydrogel can proficiently hold drugs, nanoparticles, and cells, making them a potential delivery system. However, disadvantages like low mechanical strength, poor biocompatibility, and unusual in-vivo biodegradation are associated with conventional hydrogels. To overcome these hurdles, hybrid hydrogels are designed using two or more structurally different polymeric units. Polysaccharides, characterized by their innate biocompatibility, biodegradability, and abundance, establish an ideal foundation for the development of these hybrid hydrogels. This review aims to discuss the studies that have utilized naturally occurring polysaccharides to prepare hybrid systems, which were aimed for various biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, bone and cartilage regeneration, wound healing, skin cancer treatment, antimicrobial therapy, osteoarthritis treatment, and drug delivery. Furthermore, this review extensively examines the properties of the employed polysaccharides within hydrogel matrices, emphasizing the advantageous characteristics that make them a preferred choice. Furthermore, the challenges associated with the commercial implementation of these systems are explored alongside an assessment of the current patent landscape.

Abstract:Hydrogels are defined as three-dimensional cross-linked (either physically or chemically) polymeric network which have tendency to retain a good quantity of liquid/fluid. In this study, we explore the exceptional properties of polysaccharides that render them invaluable for biomedical applications, particularly in the development of hydrogels. Hydrogels based on chitosan-, guar gum-, dextran-, cellulose-, and starch-based hydrogel exhibit a remarkable capacity for water absorption, providing a biocompatible and hydrated environment conducive for cell growth and tissue regeneration. Furthermore, their inherent biodegradability, non-toxicity, and low immunogenicity make them ideal candidates for sustained drug delivery systems. Additionally, the tunable chemical structure of chitosan, guar gum, dextran, cellulose, and starch allows for customization to meet specific therapeutic requirements. These distinctive attributes position chitosan, guar gum, dextran, cellulose, and starch as a promising material in the advancement of hydrogel-based biomedical technologies, offering significant potential for a wide range of clinical applications. Abstract:Some bioactive ingredients in foods are unstable and easily degraded during processing, storage, transportation and digestion. To enhance the stability and bioavailability, some food hydrogels have been developed to encapsulate these unstable compounds. In this paper, the preparation methods, formation mechanisms, physicochemical and functional properties of some protein hydrogels, polysaccharide hydrogels and protein-polysaccharide composite hydrogels were comprehensively summarized. Since the hydrogels have the ability to control the release and enhance the bioavailability of bioactive ingredients, the encapsulation and release mechanisms of polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins and probiotics by hydrogels were further discussed. This review will provide a comprehensive reference for the deep application of polysaccharide/protein hydrogels in food industry.

Abstract:Hydrogels from biopolymers are readily synthesized, can possess various characteristics for different applications, and have been widely used in biomedicine to help with patient treatments and outcomes. Polysaccharides, polypeptides, and nucleic acids can be produced into hydrogels, each for unique purposes depending on their qualities. Examples of polypeptide hydrogels include collagen, gelatin, and elastin, and polysaccharide hydrogels include alginate, cellulose, and glycosaminoglycan. Many different theories have been formulated to research hydrogels, which include Flory-Rehner theory, Rubber Elasticity Theory, and the calculation of porosity and pore size. All these theories take into consideration enthalpy, entropy, and other thermodynamic variables so that the structure and pore sizes of hydrogels can be formulated. Hydrogels can be fabricated in a straightforward process using a homogeneous mixture of different chemicals, depending on the intended purpose of the gel. Different types of hydrogels exist which include pH-sensitive gels, thermogels, electro-sensitive gels, and light-sensitive gels and each has its unique biomedical applications including structural capabilities, regenerative repair, or drug delivery. Major biopolymer-based hydrogels used for cell delivery include encapsulated skeletal muscle cells, osteochondral muscle cells, and stem cells being delivered to desired locations for tissue regeneration. Some examples of hydrogels used for drug and biomolecule delivery include insulin encapsulated hydrogels and hydrogels that encompass cancer drugs for desired controlled release. This review summarizes these newly developed biopolymer-based hydrogel materials that have been mainly made since 2015 and have shown to work and present more avenues for advanced medical applications.

Abstract:Hydrogels are ideal for various food applications because of their softness, elasticity, absorbent nature, flexibility, and hygroscopic nature. Polysaccharide hydrogels are particularly suitable because of the hydrophilic nature, their food compatibility, and their non-immunogenic character. Such hydrogels offer a wide range of successful applications such as food preservation, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and food packaging. Additionally, polysaccharide hydrogels have proven to play a significant role in the formulation of food flavor carrier systems, thus diversifying the horizons of newer developments in food processing sector. Polysaccharide hydrogels are comprised of natural polymers such as alginate, chitosan, starch, pectin and hyaluronic acid when crosslinked physically or chemically. Hydrogels with interchangeable, antimicrobial and barrier properties are referred to as smart hydrogels. This review brings together the recent and relevant polysaccharide research in these polysaccharide hydrogel applications areas and seeks to point the way forward for future research and interventions. Applications in carrying out the process of flavor carrier system directly through their incorporation in food matrices, broadening the domain for food application innovations. The classification and important features of polysaccharide-based hydrogels in food processing are the topics of the current review study.

Abstract:The results of a recently reported consumer survey were further examined by means of a factor analysis. Two factors emerged: the major one reflecting the general perceived helpfulness of the day hospital, and a secondary one which correlated positively with the rated helpfulness of talking to nurses and negatively with the helpfulness of medication. Day attenders who rated talking with nurses as more helpful showed a greater tendency to be married with children.

Abstract:Polysaccharide-based hydrogels (PBHs) offer several advantages over their synthetic counterparts. Their natural origin contributes to their nontoxicity, high biocompatibility, and in vivo biodegradability. Their properties can be tuned finely to obtain hydrogels with desired mechanical, structural, and chemical properties. Such versatile characteristics have potentiated the use of PBHs for the delivery of drugs, vaccines, protein and peptide therapeutics, genes, cells, probiotics, bacteriophages, and other therapeutic agents. Recent advances in hydrogel-based formulations such as nanogels, microgels, microneedles, hydrogel beads, nanocarrier-loaded hydrogels, and complexation hydrogels have enabled the precise delivery of a wide range of therapeutics. This review aims to give a holistic overview of hydrogels in the delivery of a variety of therapeutics through different routes. PBHs have been used to enable the oral delivery of vaccines and other biologicals, thereby allowing self-administration of life-saving vaccines during public health emergencies. There is a lack of commercialized wound dressings for the treatment of chronic wounds. PBH-based wound dressings, especially those based on chitosan and loaded with actives and growth factors, have the potential to help in the long-term treatment of such wounds. Abstract:Over the last years of research on drug delivery systems (DDSs), natural polymer-based hydrogels have shown many scientific advances due to their intrinsic properties and a wide variety of potential applications. While drug efficacy and cytotoxicity play a key role, adopting a proper DDS is crucial to preserve the drug along the route of administration and possess desired therapeutic effect at the targeted site. Thus, drug delivery technology can be used to overcome the difficulties of maintaining drugs at a physiologically related serum concentration for prolonged periods. Due to their outstanding biocompatibility, polysaccharides have been thoroughly researched as a biological material for DDS advancement. To formulate a modified DDS, polysaccharides can cross-link with different molecules, resulting in hydrogels. According to our recent findings, targeted drug delivery at a certain spot occurs due to external stimulation such as temperature, pH, glucose, or light. As an adjustable biomedical device, the hydrogel has tremendous potential for nanotech applications in involved health areas such as pharmaceutical and biomedical engineering. An overview of hydrogel characteristics and functionalities is provided in this review. We focus on discussing the various kinds of hydrogel-based systems on their potential for effectively delivering drugs that are made of polysaccharides.

Abstract:Nowadays, food hydrogels are widely applied in food processing and can be utilized to deliver various functional components. Mesona chinensis Benth polysaccharides (MCBP), the major compounds of Mesona chinensis Benth, have been successfully developed as stabilizers, coagulants and binders in the food industry. However, due to the insufficient viscosity of single MCBP solution, MCBP need to interact with other biomacromolecules to form hydrogels. In recent years, a series of novel composite hydrogels were prepared by various research teams based on the interactions of MCBP with different polysaccharides. Therefore, we aimed to summarize the research progress in the physicochemical properties of MCBP-polysaccharide hydrogels for the first time. It was shown that MCBP were able to form gels with wheat, maize, pea, sweet potato, tapioca, rice, potato, chestnut, hyacinth bean starches and chitosan. The addition of these polysaccharides could significantly influence the pasting, gelling, textural, rheological, morphological, thermal, retrogradation, color, optical and in vitro digestible properties of MCBP. Notably, the decrease in the digestibility of starches from different sources after interacting with MCBP was usually associated with the effects of MCBP on their structural properties. Besides, the physicochemical properties of composite hydrogels were greatly affected by heat, urea, alkali and salt ion treatments, which was probably attributed to their impacts on the electrostatic interactions and/or hydrogen bonds between two polysaccharides. Taken together, MCBP were of great potential to be utilized in the fabrication of novel functional hydrogels in the future.

Abstract:Polysaccharides are a class of natural biopolymers that have attracted significant attention due to their unique properties, which make them attractive for use in a wide range of applications. These biopolymers have an important role in our daily life, and designing biomaterials for biomedical applications requires careful consideration of factors such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, renewability, affordability, and availability, all of which can be achieved with polysaccharides. This review paper focuses on the use of polysaccharides in biomedical applications and provides an in‐depth analysis of the potential applications of arabinoxylan, a type of hemicellulose, in various fields, including drug delivery, infection control, tissue engineering, wound healing, and others. Arabinoxylan, which is derived from plants, is the most abundant and important class of hemicellulose and has a diverse role as a catalyst due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and renewable nature. Polysaccharide‐based biopolymers have applications in tissue engineering, wound covers, drug delivery systems, food preservation, and biocomposite films, making them an emerging excipient in pharmaceutical research. This review paper highlights the potential of polysaccharide‐based biopolymers in biomedical science and suggests that continued research and development will lead to broader and more innovative applications in the field. The use of polysaccharide‐based biopolymers has the potential to significantly advance healthcare and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract:Hydrogels prepared from natural polymer have attracted extensive attention in biomedical fields such as drug delivery, wound healing, and regenerative medicine due to their good biocompatibility, degradability, and flexibility. This review outlines the commonly used natural polymer in hydrogel preparation, including cellulose, chitosan, collagen/gelatin, alginate, hyaluronic acid, starch, guar gum, agarose, and dextran. The polymeric structure and process/synthesis of natural polymers are illustrated, and natural polymer-based hydrogels including the hydrogel formation and properties are elaborated. Subsequently, the biomedical applications of hydrogels based on natural polymer in drug delivery, tissue regeneration, wound healing, and other biomedical fields are summarized. Finally, the future perspectives of natural polymers and hydrogels based on them are discussed. For natural polymers, novel technologies such as enzymatic and biological methods have been developed to improve their structural properties, and the development of new natural-based polymers or natural polymer derivatives with high performance is still very important and challenging. For natural polymer-based hydrogels, novel hydrogel materials, like double-network hydrogel, multifunctional composite hydrogels, and hydrogel microrobots have been designed to meet the advanced requirements in biomedical applications, and new strategies such as dual-cross-linking, microfluidic chip, micropatterning, and 3D/4D bioprinting have been explored to fabricate advanced hydrogel materials with designed properties for biomedical applications. Overall, natural polymeric hydrogels have attracted increasing interest in biomedical applications, and the development of novel natural polymer-based materials and new strategies/methods for hydrogel fabrication are highly desirable and still challenging.

Abstract:Food hydrogels are effective materials of great interest to scientists because they are safe and beneficial to the environment. Hydrogels are widely used in the food industry due to their three-dimensional crosslinked networks. They have also attracted a considerable amount of attention because they can be used in many different ways in the food industry, for example, as fat replacers, target delivery vehicles, encapsulating agents, etc. Gels—particularly proteins and polysaccharides—have attracted the attention of food scientists due to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, nutritional properties, and edibility. Thus, this review is focused on the nutritional importance, microstructure, mechanical characteristics, and food hydrogel applications of gels. This review also focuses on the structural configuration of hydrogels, which implies future potential applications in the food industry. The findings of this review confirm the application of different plant- and animal-based polysaccharide and protein sources as gelling agents. Gel network structure is improved by incorporating polysaccharides for encapsulation of bioactive compounds. Different hydrogel-based formulations are widely used for the encapsulation of bioactive compounds, food texture perception, risk monitoring, and food packaging applications.

Abstract:Inulin, a natural polysaccharide, has emerged as a promising precursor for the preparation of hydrogels due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and structural versatility. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent progress in the preparation, characterization, and diverse applications of inulin-based hydrogels. Different synthesis strategies, including physical methods (thermal induction and non-thermal induction), chemical methods (free-radical polymerization and chemical crosslinking), and enzymatic approaches, are discussed in detail. The unique properties of inulin-based hydrogels, such as stimuli-responsiveness, antibacterial activity, and their potential as fat replacers, are highlighted. Special emphasis is given to their promising applications in drug delivery systems, especially for colon-targeted delivery, due to the selective degradation of inulin via colonic microflora. The ability to incorporate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs further expands their therapeutic potential. In addition, the applications of inulin-based hydrogels in responsive materials, the food industry, wound dressings, and tissue engineering are discussed. While significant progress has been achieved, challenges and prospects in optimizing synthesis, improving mechanical properties, and exploring new functionalities are discussed. Overall, this review highlights the remarkable properties of inulin-based hydrogels as a promising class of biomaterials with immense potential in the biomedical, pharmaceutical, and materials science fields.

Abstract:The review presents the recent progresses in the design and synthesis of a series of polysaccharide‐based (i.e., cellulose, alginate, chitosan, and CDs) hydrogels as well as their potential applications in self‐healing hydrogels, sensors, energy storage and conversion as well as biomedical fields over the past decade.Hydrogels are three‐dimensional (3D) crosslinked hydrophilic polymer networks that have garnered tremendous interests in many fields, including water treatment, energy storage, and regenerative medicine. However, conventional synthetic polymer hydrogels have poor biocompatibility. In this context, polysaccharides, a class of renewable natural materials with biocompatible and biodegradable properties, have been utilized as building blocks to yield polysaccharide‐based hydrogels through physical and/or chemical crosslinking of polysaccharides via a variety of monomers or ions. These polysaccharide‐derived hydrogels exhibit peculiar physicochemical properties and excellent mechanical properties due to their unique structures and abundant functional groups. This review focuses on recent advances in synthesis and applications of polysaccharide‐based hydrogels by capitalizing on a set of biocompatible and biodegradable polysaccharides (i.e., cellulose, alginate, chitosan, and cyclodextrins [CDs]). First, we introduce the design and synthesis principles for crafting polysaccharide‐based hydrogels. Second, polysaccharide‐based hydrogels that are interconnected via various crosslinking strategies (e.g., physical crosslinking, chemical crosslinking, and double networking) are summarized. In particular, the introduction of noncovalent and/or dynamic covalent interactions imparts polysaccharide‐based hydrogels with a myriad of intriguing performances (e.g., stimuli–response and self‐recovery). Third, the diverse applications of polysaccharide‐based hydrogels in self‐healing, sensory, supercapacitor, battery, drug delivery, wound healing, tissues engineering, and bioimaging fields are discussed. Finally, the perspectives of polysaccharide‐based hydrogels that promote their future design to enable new functions and applications are outlined.

Abstract:Polysaccharides-based hydrogel has many advantages such as biocompatibility, self-repair property, and biodegradability. It has been widely applied in various fields and has attracted great attention of researchers. The natural polysaccharides involved in this review include fenugreek gum, guar gum, locust bean gum, gellan gum, sodium alginate, agarose, and konjac glucomannan etc. Borax is a highly effective crosslinking agent for cis-ortho-hydroxyl polysaccharides. This paper focused on the synthesis mechanism, functional additives, characteristics, and applications of borax crosslinked cis-ortho-hydroxyl polysaccharides hydrogels (BHs). Moreover, the factors affecting BHs performance such as temperature, pH, and media were analyzed. Its mechanical and self-repair properties are enhanced by the dynamic and reversible borate/di-diol, which play a significant role in sensors, biomedicine, and tissue engineering. This review summarizes the research progress of BHs for the first time. Additionally, hoping to contribute to the development of this field, the review analyzes the correlation of performance through the SPSS 26 software.

Abstract:Hydrogels have outstanding research and application prospects in the field of product design. Among them, the design and preparation of cellulose-based functional hydrogels derived from bamboo have attracted increasing research interest. Cellulose-based hydrogels not only have the skeleton function of hydrogels, but also retain excellent specificity, smart structural design, precise molecular recognition ability, and superior biocompatibility. Cellulose-based hydrogels show important application prospects in various fields, such as environmental protection, biomedicine, and energy. What's more, they are potentially viable for application in food packaging and plant agriculture, such as fertilizers release and crop production. Recently, researchers have extracted cellulose from bamboo and generated a variety of cellulose-based functional hydrogels with excellent properties by various cross-linking methods. In addition, a variety of multifunctional hybrid cellulose-based hydrogels have been constructed by introducing functional components or combining them with other functional materials, thus expanding the breadth and depth of their applications. Herein, we elaborate on advances in the field of cellulose-based hydrogels and highlight their applications in food packaging and plant agriculture. Meanwhile, the existing problems and prospects are summarized. The review provides a reference for the further development of cellulose-based hydrogels.

Abstract:Hydrogels, polymeric network materials, are capable of swelling and holding the bulk of water in their three-dimensional structures upon swelling. In recent years, hydrogels have witnessed increased attention in food and biomedical applications. In this paper, the available literature related to the design concepts, types, functionalities, and applications of hydrogels with special emphasis on food applications was reviewed. Hydrogels from natural polymers are preferred over synthetic hydrogels. They are predominantly used in diverse food applications for example in encapsulation, drug delivery, packaging, and more recently for the fabrication of structured foods. Natural polymeric hydrogels offer immense benefits due to their extraordinary biocompatible nature. Hydrogels based on natural/edible polymers, for example, those from polysaccharides and proteins, can serve as prospective alternatives to synthetic polymer-based hydrogels. The utilization of hydrogels has so far been limited, despite their prospects to address various issues in the food industries. More research is needed to develop biomimetic hydrogels, which can imitate the biological characteristics in addition to the physicochemical properties of natural materials for different food applications.

Abstract:The combination of fiber and hydrogel in a system can provide substantial benefits for both components, including the development of three-dimensional structures for the fiber, followed by modifications in the rheological and mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Despite a large increase in the use of fiber-hydrogel composites (FHCs) in various sciences and industries such as biomedicine, tissue engineering, cosmetics, automotive, textile, and agriculture, there is limited information about FHCs in the realm of food application. In this regard, this study reviews the mechanism of FHCs. The force transmission between fiber and hydrogel, which depends on the interactions between them during loading, is the main reason to enhance the mechanical properties of FHCs. Moreover, articles about such FHCs that have the potential for foods or food industries have been described. Additionally, the information gaps about edible FHCs were highlighted for further research. Finally, the methods of fiber formation have been summarized.
