Abstract:Mercury, a highly toxic metal and pollutant, poses a significant risk to human health and the environment. This study describes the synthesis of a new nitrogen-doped heteroaromatic hyper-crosslinked polyamine (HCPA) via the polycondensation of 2,6-diaminopyrazine and tris(4-formylphenyl)amine for the efficient removal of mercury ions from aqueous solutions. The HCPA polymer was characterized by solid-state 13C-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. A powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the polymer was semicrystalline in nature and stable up to 500 °C. Adsorption isotherms indicated that mercury adsorption occurred via mono- and multilayer adsorption by HCPA, as depicted by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of qm = 333.3 mg/g. Adsorption kinetic models suggested that the adsorption process was fast and effective, reaching equilibrium within 20 min. Thermodynamics of the adsorption process revealed that it was endothermic and spontaneous in nature due to the positive ΔH0 of 48 kJ/mol and negative ΔG0 values of -4.5 kJ/mol at 293 K. Wastewater treatment revealed 98% removal of mercury indicating the selective nature of HCPA. Finally, HCPA exhibited excellent performance and regeneration up to three cycles, demonstrating its great potential as an adsorbent for environmental remediation applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply the multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) and asymmetrical support vector machine to improve the performance of an iris recognition system. We utilize the collarette region instead of using the complete information of iris region for recognition purpose. The deterministic feature sequence extracted from the iris images using the 2-D Gabor wavelets is applied to train the support vector machine (SVM). We use the MOGA to optimize the features and also to increase the overall recognition accuracy based on the matching performance of the tuned SVM. The traditional SVM is modified to an asymmetrical SVM to treat the cases of the False Accept and the False Reject differently and also to handle the unbalanced data of a specific class with respect to the other classes. The proposed technique is computationally effective with recognition rates of 97.70% and 95.60% on the ICE (Iris Challenge Evaluation) and the WVU (West Virginia University) iris datasets respectively.
Porosity Design on Conjugated Microporous Poly(Aniline)S for Exceptional Mercury(II) Removal

Abstract:The use of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) in practical wastewater treatment demands further design on the pore structure, otherwise their adsorption capacities toward heavy-metal ions were moderate. Here, we report a rational design approach, which produces hybrid molecular pores in conjugated microporous poly(aniline)s (CMPAs) for mercury removal. It is achieved through a delicate interval introduction of linkers with differential molecular lengths during polymerization, acquiring both diffusion channels and storage pores for radical enhancement of mass transfer and adsorption storage. The resulting CMPA-M featured a large adsorption capacity of 975 mg g-1 and rapid kinetics that could remove 94.8% of 50 mg g-1 of mercury(II) within a very short contact time of 48 s, with a promising initial adsorption rate h as high as 113 mg g-1 min-1, which was 2.54-fold larger in the adsorption capacity and 45.2-fold faster in the adsorption efficiency compared with the undeveloped CMPAs. More importantly, our CMPA-M-2, with robust stability and easy reusability, was able to scavenge over 99.9% of mercury(II) from the actual wastewater in a harsh condition with a very low pH of 0.77, extremely high salinity of 53,157 mg L-1, and complex impurities, featuring exceptional selectivity that allows us to extract and recycle a high purity of 99.1% of mercury from the wastewater. These outcomes demonstrate the unprecedented potential of CMPs for environmental remediation and real-world mercury extraction and present benchmarks for CMP-based mercury adsorbents.

Abstract:Mercury, as a heavy metal pollutant, severely threatens human health and the environment. In this work, a novel porous polymeric material, MMP (melamine polymer), was prepared using melamine as a precursor to removing Hg2+ from aqueous solutions. The characterization of the material showed that the MMP exhibited a two-dimensional folded sheet structure with a high specific surface area and pore size and was amorphous. FT-IR spectra showed the presence of amide bonds, which proved that the MMP was successfully synthesized and had good stability. The reaction kinetics and proposed secondary kinetics of the system after different adsorption times of MMP in mercury nitrate solution found that the adsorption rate of MMP could reach more than 90% at a concentration lower than 2000 mg·L−1. The removal capacity of saturated mercury ions was 2018.1 mg·g−1. Furthermore, it had good adsorption performance for mercury ions in a wide range of pH. The MMP has a high adsorption capacity and high adsorption rate for mercury ions, which is well demonstrated. The development of the material has a specific guiding effect on the existing treatment technology of mercury waste liquid. It provides a new method to solve the problem of mercury waste liquid pollution in functional factories.

Abstract:The primary challenge in materials design and synthesis is achieving the balance between performance and economy for real-world application. This issue is addressed by creating a thiol functionalized porous organic polymer (POP) using simple free radical polymerization techniques to prepare a cost-effective material with a high density of chelating sites designed for mercury capture and therefore environmental remediation. The resulting POP is able to remove aqueous and airborne mercury with uptake capacities of 1216 and 630 mg g(-1), respectively. The material demonstrates rapid kinetics, capable of dropping the mercury concentration from 5 ppm to 1 ppb, lower than the US Environmental Protection Agency's drinking water limit (2 ppb), within 10 min. Furthermore, the material has the added benefits of recyclability, stability in a broad pH range, and selectivity for toxic metals. These results are attributed to the material's physical properties, which include hierarchical porosity, a high density of chelating sites, and the material's robustness, which improve the thiol availability to bind with mercury as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure studies. The work provides promising results for POPs as an economical material for multiple environmental remediation applications.
Cellulose-based adsorbent using in mercury detection and removal from water via an efficient grafting strategy of fluorometric sensors by click reaction

Abstract:Mercury pollution in waters attracts lots of attention due to its serious toxicity and high bioenrichment and many efforts have been devoted in the development of adsorbents for mercury detection and removal. Herein, a cellulose-based adsorbent Cell-TriA-HQ is functionalized with quinoline fluorophore by covalent immobilization through "Click reaction" with high yield. In addition to the admirable adsorptive performance, the prepared adsorbent exhibits excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg (II) in water that the detection limit for Hg (II) is determined to be as low as 1.92 × 10-7 M. The sensitive fluorescence enhancement response is considered to be resulted from the inhibition of photo-induced electron transfer between triazole and quinoline groups and the reinforcement of structural rigidity. The easy manipulation along with excellent performance of adsorption capacity, detective ability and reusability for the multifunctional adsorbent makes it potential in mercury monitoring and removal from aqueous solutions in the field of water treatment.

Abstract:Post-synthetic modification (PSM) technique is employed on the optimization of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) composites. In this work, a new Zr-MOF derived from UiO-66 is prepared and used as efficient adsorbents for mercury removal from water and able to detect mercury ions with excellent selectivity. It is observed that the fluorescence intensity of UiO-66-An exhibits good linearity across the concentration range of 0.5–2.5 μM and the detection limit of mercury is calculated to be as low as 2.67 × 10 -8 M which is below the effluent standard declared by WHO. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of UiO-66-An for Hg (II) can still maintain 64.8 % after 5 cycles of adsorption–desorption process. In addition, the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent is determined to be as high as 303.03 mg/g for mercury, indicating the successful integration of adsorptive and detective functions together on a single adsorbent material which is beneficial for practical application in mercury management

Abstract:The unregulated use of pesticides which constitutes organophosphates demands their continuous monitoring from a human health perspective. The development of efficient, reliable, and affordable methods for effective quantification, removal, and detoxification of pesticides is indeed a significant issue in the fields of agriculture, environmental science and public health. Herein, we have designed a simple approach for construction of functionalised electrochemical material which consist of (i) cation-π induced non-covalent functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with organic cation IL, (ii) complexation of IL@MWCNTs with Hg2+ accelerate electron transfer, apparently enhance the response of Hg/ IL@MWCNTs towards azinphos-methyl as revealed by cyclic voltammetry. The Hg/IL@MWCNTs/GCE exhibit electrocatalytic behaviour towards azinphos-methyl (AZM) with low detection limit 1.10 μM and wide linear range (0.20-180 μM). The degradation of AZM pesticide was supported by 31P NMR titration and mass spectrometry which confirm the conversion of AZM into its non-toxic products. Taking cognizance of aforementioned findings for practical application, the functionalised IL@MWCNTs composite fabricated into ultrathin polyamide layer on the PES support membrane via interfacial polymerisation. The developed nano-composite membrane removes Hg2+ metal ion and azinphos-methyl pesticide from contaminated water with removal efficiency of 95% and 90% respectively.

Abstract:Mercury pollution in aqueous solutions is a severe problem in environmental protection and the contaminated water may cause serious risks to human health. Based on the constant development of adsorptive materials, adsorption technique is widely applied as an efficient and convenient approach to eliminate mercury species from waters. In this work, we report a one-pot procedure to prepare a bis-Schiff base cellulosic adsorbent to integrate the advantages of large adsorptive capacity and excellent fluorescent recognition towards mercury ions. The adsorption experiments demonstrate that sulfydryl-contained cellulosic nanocrystals exhibit specific affinity with mercury species and the adsorption capacity reaches as high as 624.8 mg/g at room temperature. Besides, the introduction of rhodamine moiety endows the material a 19 times enhancement of selective "off-on" fluorescent sensing while exposed to mercury. Additionally, the bifunctional adsorbent material shows high sensitivity towards mercury ions in aqueous solution with detection limits of as low as 8.29 × 10 −8 M for fluorescence and 5.9 × 10 −9 M for UV–vis spectrum, respectively. The fitting results of the adsorption models indicate a monolayer adsorption during the uptake of mercury ions and the removal process follows the pseudo-second order kinetics. Moreover, density functional theory studies are employed to further understand the adsorptive and responsive mechanisms.

Abstract:Mercury metal ions are very toxic, the presence of this metal and its derivatives, which are harmful even in very small amounts to the health of all organisms, was found in the study area. The purpose of this study is determination and elimination of Hg (II) ions from drinking water and aqueous environments. Modified and activated carbon produced from local plantain bark has been considered to be suitable and environmentally friendly material for mercury (II) ions removal in water treatments. 85% phosphoric acid chemical activator was used, It is then heated to 450°C for 5 h to carry out carbonization. The absorbent was characterized by SEM. Removal was performed by passing water containing ions through a column containing the adsorbent The prepared adsorbent well removed mercury ions from the aqueous solution, measuring of concentration mercury ions in samples from the inlet and outlet of the column was performed by two different methods, spectrophotometric determination at 492 nm with dithizone and atomic absorption (equipped with cold vaper apparatus) spectroscopy CVAAS, the results were almost the same. The various parameters such as pH, with (6–8), contact time (0.5, 1, 2, and 3 h), concentrations of metal ions entering the system (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 ppm), and agitation speed were investigated on adsorption effect. The efficiency of this absorbent for removal of Hg (II) ions is 87%. It can be used several times, which shows that this is a good adsorbent for elimination of mercury ions of real samples such as drinking water and industrial wastewaters, due to its ease of use, low cost and relatively good performance. Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) have high reaction rate and atom utilization with respect to pollutants in aqueous environments. However, the aggregation and instability in acidic solution limit their practical applications. Mercury removed from acidic solution are still a big problem. In this study, we used a tunable porous covalent organic framework (COF) material as a support for in situ growth of Ag NPs via a one-step solution infiltration method, to enhance the spatial dispersion of NPs and their stability in acidic solution, and for the first time studying the mercury adsorption performance. More importantly, the Ag NPs@COF composite exhibited high removal rate (99 %), ultrahigh Ag atom utilization (150 %), high selectivity and stability, and reusability for Hg(II) removal from acidic aqueous solutions. Meantime, through common characterizations and density functional theory calculations verifying the microscopic adsorption process, we found COF material played an important role in the entire purification process because it provided some electrons to Hg(II) ions via Ag NPs, finally generating an amalgam. Therefore, the present work not only provides a COF-supported Ag NPs material for Hg(II) ions removal from acidic waste water but also opens a new field of design of functionalized COFs material for applications in environmental pollutions control.

Abstract:A key challenge in environmental remediation is the design of adsorbents bearing an abundance of accessible chelating sites with high affinity, to achieve both rapid uptake and high capacity for the contaminants. Herein, we demonstrate how two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with well-defined mesopore structures display the right combination of properties to serve as a scaffold for decorating coordination sites to create ideal adsorbents. The proof-of-concept design is illustrated by modifying sulfur derivatives on a newly designed vinyl-functionalized mesoporous COF (COF-V) via thiol-ene "click" reaction. Representatively, the material (COF-S-SH) synthesized by treating COF-V with 1,2-ethanedithiol exhibits high efficiency in removing mercury from aqueous solutions and the air, affording Hg2+ and Hg0 capacities of 1350 and 863 mg g-1, respectively, surpassing all those of thiol and thioether functionalized materials reported thus far. More significantly, COF-S-SH demonstrates an ultrahigh distribution coefficient value (Kd) of 2.3 × 109 mL g-1, which allows it to rapidly reduce the Hg2+ concentration from 5 ppm to less than 0.1 ppb, well below the acceptable limit in drinking water (2 ppb). We attribute the impressive performance to the synergistic effects arising from densely populated chelating groups with a strong binding ability within ordered mesopores that allow rapid diffusion of mercury species throughout the material. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopic studies revealed that each Hg is bound exclusively by two S via intramolecular cooperativity in COF-S-SH, further interpreting its excellent affinity. The results presented here thus reveal the exceptional potential of COFs for high-performance environmental remediation.

Abstract:The current scenario of environmental pollution attributed to industrial ecotoxicants envisages the imperative necessity not just to detect highly toxic heavy metal ions but also to concurrently eliminate them, to ensure the sustainable safeguard of the environment. However, the contemporaneous detection and removal of mercury ions is seldom reported. Herein, a triazine-based porous organic polymer, POP CCAD, consisting of nitrogen-rich binding sites, has been designed and synthesized via a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction using cyanuric chloride and adenine as the starting materials. POP CCAD could achieve its application as a bifunctional material for the fluorescence sensing of Hg2+ with a detection limit of 8.4 nM and a removal capacity of 460 mg g–1. This work reveals the capability of porous organic polymers, serving not only as fluorescent sensors for mercury ions but also as molecular sieves for their separation.

Multifunctional Binding Strategy on Nonconjugated Polymer Nanoparticles for Ratiometric Detection and Effective Removal of Mercury Ions

Abstract:Developing a multifunctional platform for the selective detection and effective removal of toxic ions is a major challenge when addressing heavy metal contamination in environmental science. Herein, novel nonconjugated polymer nanoparticles (PNPs) called mercaptosuccinic acid-thiosemicarbazide PNPs (MT-PNPs) with appealing fluorescence and stability are synthesized via facile one-step hydrothermal treatment for attractive sensing and simultaneous removal of mercury(II). Interestingly, aggregation-induced fluorescence switch-off and scattering enhancement are found upon the addition of Hg2+, rendering MT-PNPs as a ratiometric sensor for selective and accurate Hg2+ monitoring. A wide linear range (0.1–1471 μM) and a low detection limit (95 nM) are obtained. This dual-signal opposite responses triggered by Hg2+ originate from the formation of MT-PNP-Hg2+ congeries via the multisite binding between S,N,O-containing groups of MT-PNPs and mercury. Meanwhile, target-induced aggregation renders an effective Hg2+ separation from contaminative aqueous media by MT-PNPs, which exhibits a satisfactory absorption efficiency of 90.42% within 50 min. Upon the simple Na2S treatment, the MT-PNPs can be regenerated and reused. Abstract:A surface-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle containing dimercaprol monomers was created utilizing the sol–gel condensation process, using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source and poloxamer as the structure directing agent. To accomplish this synthesis, 3-glycidoxypropyl triethoxysilane (GPTS, 20 mol%) was incorporated into the silica walls during the sol–gel condensation process, along with TEOS. Furthermore, dimercaprol (DM) monomers were incorporated onto silica surfaces by a ring-opening reaction between GPTS epoxy groups, and dimercaprol hydroxyl groups. The prepared dimercaprol-modified silica adsorbent (MSN-DT NPs) material has been studied using a variety of instruments, including XRD, FT-IR, N 2 adsorption–desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and zeta potential analysis. The MSN-DT NPs material selectively adsorbs mercury ions, with a high adsorption amount of 125 mg/g and a removal capability of roughly ~ 90% from the original metal ion mixture comprising other competing metals such as Pb 2+ , Ni 2+ , Fe 2+ , and Zn 2+ . The MSN-DT NPs adsorbent shows recyclable qualities for up to five cycles when treated with an acidic aqueous solution (0.1 M HCl). As a result, the MSN-DT NPs adsorbent may be regenerated and reused up to five times without losing its adsorption effectiveness. The experimental findings showed that the MSN-DT NPs adsorbent may be employed to selectively remove hazardous Hg 2+ ions from an aqueous solution.

Involvement of CN Sites in Solvothermally Engineered Metal‐Free Carbon Material From Weed Lantana camara for the Detection of Mercury Ions: Experimental and DFT Insights

Abstract:Metal‐free sensor for detection of mercury in water using weed Lantana camara: hitting two birds with one stone for attaining sustainability. Fluorescence spectroscopy reveals the presence of various active sites within the material, highlighting the significance of the CN sites confirmed through multiple experimental techniques. DFT calculations validate the existence and contribution of the CN site, providing a comprehensive understanding of its behavior and importance. Embarking on a journey to decipher the role of active sites in the detection and removal of toxic mercury(II) ions from polluted water, the surface of thermally engineered biomass derived carbon matrix NC‐180 was customized with nitrogen atoms. The HR‐TEM and XRD analyses revealed the amorphous nature of Lantana camara derived carbon material with small spherical flakes embedded in it. XPS analysis indicated the presence of pyrrolic, pyridinic, and graphitic N atoms, which was further confirmed by FT‐IR analysis. The material shows quenching effect in presence of Hg2+ ions resulting in the "turn off" effect with a detection limit of 7.2 nM. The activity of NC‐180 was recovered through "turn on" effect in the presence of L‐cysteine. Furthermore, the mystery of binding of mercury(II) ions with N‐sites is clarified through its comparison with other materials bearing sulfur and oxygen functional groups designated as AC‐180, SC‐180, and NSC‐180. The conclusive evidence for efficient binding of nitrogen sites in NC‐180 with mercury(II) ions is derived from various analyses, including 1H‐NMR, FT‐IR, XPS, and density functional theory. Notably, sustainability is achieved through utilization of toxic weed L. camara for the preparation of this selective carbon material for detection and adsorption of mercury(II) ions.

Abstract:Poly(m-phenylenediamine) (PmPD) microspheres were productively and sustainably synthesized by a facile one-step chemical oxidative polymerization of m-phenylenediamine with ammonium persulfate in pure water without any acid or alkali. A comprehensive characterization of the structures, morphology, and nature of PmPD microspheres suggested that they exhibited highly chemical/thermal resistance and strong Hg(II) adsorbability. The batch static sorption/desorption of mercury ions were systematically optimized by adjusting the sorption/desorption time and temperature, mercury-ion concentration, sorbent dosage, and the species, concentration and dose of desorbents. The microparticles exhibit high Hg(II) sorption capacity up to 1499.2 mg/g at an initial Hg(II) concentration of 1986 mg/L, high Hg(II) partition coefficient up to 5040 mg/(g.μM) at an initial Hg(II) concentration of 20 mg/L, and high initial sorption rate up to 763.3 mg/(g.min). The dynamic sorption results suggest that the breakthrough and saturation times of the column loaded with the microparticles toward 1.99 mM Hg(II) solution at the flow rate of 1 mL/min are 19.8 h and 58.0 h, respectively. After 5 dynamic sorption-desorption cycles, the column efficiency is still high, indicating good reusability. A sorption mechanism including the first reduction from mercury-ion to mercurous-ion by amino and imino groups, and the second complexation and ion exchange of mercurous-ions is proposed. Without the pollution caused by the preparation or part solubility of sorbents themselves, the PmPD microspheres are cost-effectively and eco-benignly applicable to elimination and recovery of mercury ions in wastewater. This generates a unique solution to sustainable problems of sorbents themselves.

Abstract:Flexible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with the gate opening feature can optimize the removal efficiency on the adsorption behavior by accommodating to the specific target molecules. In this study, a flexible MOF denoted as NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) was investigated to remove Hg(II) from water, in which the adsorption capacities of large-pore NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) (NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)-LP) for Hg(II) reached 433.20 mg/g, which is about 4 times higher than narrow-pore NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) (112.75 mg/g). Further, the kinetic experiment also revealed that nearly 90 % Hg(II) can be captured within 60 min for NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)-LP. Advanced characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the strong coordination of the amino and oxygen centers on NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)-LP to Hg(II). Importantly, molecular dynamic simulation verified the gate opening effect of NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)-LP, as the faster diffusivity of Hg(II) ions in NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)-LP was observed. This work provides another opportunity in designing the pore geometry of porous materials for water remediation.

Abstract:Polyacrylonitrile fiber was successfully modified with triazine-based dendrimer via grafting method as a promising adsorbent for removal of mercury species from aqueous media. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by elemental analysis, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, porous structure analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, providing the evidence of successful fabrication. The adsorption conditions were found via varying pH, dosage, coexisting substances, contact time, temperature and concentration. Adsorption performance, described better by the pseudo-second-order kinetics with intraparticle diffusion as rate controlling step and Langmuir isotherm model, indicated a chemisorption process with the maximum Langmuir adsorption amount of 227.64 mg g−1 for mercury ions. Thermodynamically, adsorption of mercury ions was spontaneous and endothermic. Desorption and regeneration experiments demonstrated that it could be reused in five successive adsorption cycles without significant loss of its original performance. Experimental data and density functional theory calculation disclosed the coordination geometries and chelating mechanism between the adsorbent and mercury ions. The proposed study would provide a new prospect for the purification of mercury in aqueous system by functionalizing commercial polyacrylonitrile fiber with dendrimers.

Abstract:This study describes the development of a fast and cost-effective method for the detection and removal of Hg2+ ions from aqueous media, consisting of hydrogels incorporating chelating agents and a rhodamine derivative (to afford a qualitative evaluation of the heavy metal entrapment inside the 3D polymeric matrix). These hydrogels, designed for the simultaneous detection and entrapment of mercury, were obtained through the photopolymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPSA) and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), utilizing N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinker, in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a rhodamine B derivative, and one of the following chelating agents: phytic acid, 1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane-tetraacetic acid, triethylenetetramine-hexaacetic acid, or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt. The rhodamine derivative had a dual purpose in this study: firstly, it was incorporated into the hydrogel to allow the qualitative evaluation of mercury entrapment through its fluorogenic switch-off abilities when sensing Hg2+ ions; secondly, it was used to quantitatively evaluate the level of residual mercury from the decontaminated aqueous solutions, via the UV-Vis technique. The ICP-MS analysis of the hydrogels also confirmed the successful entrapment of mercury inside the hydrogels and a good correlation with the UV-Vis method.
