Abstract:Numerous clinical studies have suggested that the greater risk for oral bone loss in females may be correlated with osteoporosis after menopause. Knowledge of trabecular changes in edentulous bedding bone in animals with loss of ovarian function may be beneficial in the planning and treating of dental implants in postmenopausal women. The purpose of this study was to evaluate trabeculae changes in edentulous bedding bone for dental implantation in ovariectomized rabbits. Twelve adult female Japanese white rabbits were examined. The mandibular incisors were initially extracted to simulate the edentulous bedding bone for dental implants. Six animals were bilaterally ovariectomized and the other 6 were sham-ovariectomized 12 weeks after tooth extraction. The edentulous parts of distal mandibular bodies were processed undecalcified 12 weeks after ovariectomy or sham-ovariectomy and examined by quantitative trabecular bone histomorphometry. In ovariectomized rabbits, there were significant increases in trabecular separation, osteoid volume, osteoid thickness, osteoid width, eroded surface, and mineral appositional rate, and a significant decrease in trabeculae number. The results of sparser trabecular structure, more trabecular osteoid, and increased trabecular bone turnover demonstrate bone loss of mandibular edentulous trabeculae in ovariectomized rabbits and suggest that the same loss may occur in postmenopausal women.
The Effect of Astragalus Extractive on Alveolar Bone Rebuilding Progress of Tooth Extracted Socket of Ovariectomied Rats.

Abstract:Background: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) is an estrogen deficiency condition that causes severe loss of bone mass in the vertebrae and long bones. We explored the effect and the possible underlying mechanism of the extracts of Astragalus (AE) on the tooth alveolar bone rebuilding progress of postmenopausal osteoporosis of PMO animal models.Material and methods: The PMO models were acquired by ovariectomy. After 8 weeks the first left maxillary molars of the rats were extracted and AE was administered orally for 8 weeks. Then the histological morphology and the transcription and expression of TGF-beta 1 and TNF-alpha in the tooth extracted socket were detected by HE dying, QRT-PCR and ELISA.Results: The results showed that the new bone volume and TGF-beta 1 was significantly lower in PMO group than the control group and AE group at the observing period. At the same time TNF-alpha in PMO group was significantly higher than the other two groups. Moreover AE group had no significant differences with the control group in all data at the observing period.Conclusion: AE has positive effect on alveolar bone rebuilding progress of tooth extracted socket of PMO rats. AE also has the potential to enhance the expression of TGF-beta 1 and decrease the expression of TNF-alpha of the rebuilding tooth extracted socket.
Appliance-induced osteopenia of dentoalveolar bone in the rat: effect of reduced bone strains on serum bone markers and the multifunctional hormone leptin.

Abstract:To understand, in greater detail, the molecular mechanisms regulating the complex relationship between mechanical strain and alveolar bone metabolism during orthodontic treatment, passive cross-arch palatal springs were bonded to the maxillary molars of 6-wk-old rats, which were killed after 4 and 8 d. Outcome measures included serum assays for markers of bone formation and resorption and for the multifunctional hormone leptin, and histomorphometry of the inter-radicular bone. The concentration of the bone-formation marker alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was significantly reduced at both time points in the appliance group, accompanied by a 50% reduction in inter-radicular bone volume; however, osteocalcin (bone Gla protein) levels remained unaffected. Bone collagen deoxypyridinoline (DPD) crosslinks increased 2.3-fold at 4 d only, indicating a transient increase in bone resorption; in contrast, the level of the osteoclast-specific marker, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP 5b), was unchanged. Leptin levels closely paralleled ALP reductions at both time points, suggesting an important role in the mechanostat negative-feedback loop required to normalize bone mass. These data suggest that an orthodontic appliance, in addition to remodeling the periodontal ligament (PDL)-bone interface, may exert unexpected side-effects on the tooth-supporting alveolar bone, and highlights the importance of recognizing that bone strains can have negative, as well as positive, effects on bone mass.
Effect of Ovariectomy and Alendronate on Implant Osseointegration in Rat Maxillary Bone.

Abstract:Bisphosphonates such as alendronate (ALD), although controversial, are worthy of investigation for the enhancement of implant osseointegration in patients with low bone mass who are already taking bisphosphonates for osteoporosis. These patients may receive additional benefits and be acceptable candidates for dental implants without needing to change their medication regimen and possibly as a result of their medication regimen. The purpose of this study was to compare implant osseointegration in maxillary bone of normal rats with a rat model of postmenopausal estrogen deficiency (ovariectomized [OVX]), with and without ALD. An experimental group of 32 rats was divided in 4 groups: ALD-OVX (n=8 OVX with ALD), OVX (n=8 OVX without ALD), ALD (n=8 normal rats with ALD), and control (n=8 normal rats). All rats received one titanium microscrew implant in the left edentulous region of the maxillary arch. The ALD-OVX and ALD groups received subcutaneous injections of ALD 3 times a week. On the fourth week after ALD administration, an implant was placed in all 32 rats. The maxilla of each rat was radiographed 4 times: at 0, 7, 14, and 28 days. On day 28 after implant placement, all rats were killed, and the peri-implant tissue was embedded in plastic or paraffin for histological examination. The X rays were used for a chronologic calculation of the contact ratio between implant and bone surfaces. Radiographic bone density was determined at 3 points: mesial, apical, and distal. The results show that osseointegration of the implants was impaired in the estrogen-deficient OVX rats compared with the ALD-OVX rats. Fifty percent of the implants were lost at 2 weeks in the OVX group. Radiographic evidence suggested that none of the implants in the OVX group osseointegrated. In the histologic examination more bone was observed around implants from the ALD-OVX and ALD groups than around implants from the OVX group. The OVX group presented a dramatic reduction in implant bone contact at 2 weeks and a significant 13% reduction at 4 weeks vs day of implant (P = .006). The ALD-OVX group presented 50% more bone density than the OVX group (P = .0003). Both ALD groups (ALD and ALD-OVX) had significantly higher radiographic bone density than the other groups (P < .01 for each comparison). In conclusion, osseointegration of implants was enhanced by ALD. Radiographic bone density and contact ratio improved with ALD administration. Implant osseointegration was impaired by estrogen deficiency in the OVX group.
Ovariectomy-Associated Changes In Bone Mineral Density And Bone Marrow Haematopoiesis In Rats

Abstract:P>The relationship between the bone mass loss and bone marrow haematopoiesis in osteoporosis remains obscure. We selected 3-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats and randomly divided them into six groups. Three groups were ovariectomized (OVX), while the other three groups were sham operated (Sham). Four, 8 and 12 weeks after the surgical procedure, the rats were euthanized and sampled. The left femur was used for measurement of bone mineral density (BMD). The right femur distal metaphysic cancellous bone was processed for morphological evaluation. Our results showed that the femur BMD in the 4-week OVX group was not significantly decreased compared with that of the 4-week Sham group, but that the volume of adipose tissue in the bone marrow was markedly increased. The femur BMD in the 8-week OVX group was decreased significantly compared with that of the 8-week Sham group (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the volume of haematopoietic tissue decreased and the volume of adipose tissue increased. The number of megakaryocytes was decreased (P < 0.05). Interestingly, the osteoclasts and mast cells were increased in number in the 8-week OVX group (P < 0.05). These changes became obvious in the 12-week OVX rats, in contrast to the Sham groups. The volume of trabecular bone and the number of osteoblasts in the 12-week OVX group decreased significantly. Increased reticulin fibres were observed only in the 12-week OVX group. Our studies demonstrated a reciprocal correlation between bone-forming osteoblasts and marrow adipose tissue and suggest that OVX rats may be valuable as an animal model to study hypohaemopoiesis.
Effects of Sequential Treatment with Intermittent Parathyroid Hormone and Zoledronic Acid on Particle-Induced Implant Loosening: Evidence from a Rat Model

Abstract:ABSTRACTParticle‐induced implant loosening is a major challenge to long‐term survival of joint prostheses. Administration of intermittent parathyroid hormone (PTH) has shown potential in the treatment of cases of early‐stage periprosthetic osteolysis, while sequential administration of intermittent PTH (iPTH) and bisphosphonates (Bps) has achieved significant effects on treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The objective of this study was to determine whether sequential treatment could preserve bone mass and implant fixation during a pathological course of peri‐implant osteolysis in a rat model. Ninety male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into nine groups, four of which were used for confirmation of establishment of the peri‐implant osteolysis model at two time points, while the other five were used to determine the efficiency of the sequential treatment on peri‐implant osteolysis. Implant fixation and peri‐implant bone mass were evaluated using biomechanical testing, micro‐CT analysis, and histology at 6 and 12 weeks postoperative. The biomechanical test demonstrated that the maximum loading force during a push‐out test was significantly elevated in the sequential treatment group compared to the osteolysis group and iPTH withdrawal group at 12 weeks. Peri‐implant bone morphology also indicated a robust increase in bone volume in the sequential treatment group. Sequential administration of iPTH and Bps was effective in preventing experimental peri‐implant osteolysis, resulting in improved implant fixation and increased peri‐implant bone volume. Clinical significance: The innovative application of sequential treatment in peri‐implant osteolysis could be used clinically to improve the prognosis of patients with early‐stage periprosthetic osteolysis. © 2019 Orthopaedic Research Society. Effect of Raloxifene on Bone Formation Around Implants in the Osteoporotic Rat Maxilla: Histomorphometric and Microcomputed Tomographic Analysis

Abstract:Purpose: Raloxifene, an antiresorptive drug, prevents bone loss and promotes bone formation by secondary anabolic action. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of raloxifene on the osseointegration of implants in the rat model of the osteoporotic maxilla. Materials and methods: Thirty Sprague-Dawley female rats aged 10 weeks were randomly assigned to the following groups: (1) raloxifene (RAL) group (n = 10), (2) ovariectomized (OVX) group (n = 10), and (3) control group (sham-operated, n = 10). Both ovaries were removed to induce osteoporosis, and the maxillary right molar was extracted. After 4 weeks, an implant was placed on the same edentulous area. Raloxifene 1 mg/kg/day was administered to the experimental animals in the RAL group, while those in the ovariectomized group and sham-operated group were given the same amount. All experimental animals were sacrificed at 4 weeks after implants were placed. Histomorphometric measurements of the bone area ratio (BA, %) and bone-to-implant contact ratio (BIC, %) around the implant were performed. Three-dimensional (3D) microcomputed tomographic (micro-CT) analysis of peri-implant bone microarchitecture was also performed and statistically analyzed. Results: In the histomorphometric analysis, the BA ratio of the implant in the RAL group was higher than that in the OVX group (53.3% ± 7.2% vs 38.2% ± 11.7%, P = .024). BIC around the implant in the RAL group did not show a statistical difference compared with that in the OVX group (42.7% ± 15.0% vs 34.5% ± 16.2%, P > .05). In microstructural analysis, the RAL group showed a significant increase of trabecular thickness compared with the OVX group (0.09 ± 0.02 mm vs 0.06 ± 0.01 mm, P = .013). However, raloxifene did not show convincing differences between the groups in other micro-CT parameters (P > .05). Conclusion: The results show that raloxifene administration demonstrated enhanced new peri-implant bone formation in the osteoporotic rat maxilla. Further research is needed to reveal the effect of raloxifene on the clinical outcome of patients with poor bone quality who undergo dental implant treatment.
OPG gene-modified adipose-derived stem cells improve bone formation around implants in osteoporotic rat maxillae

Abstract:Background: Osteoporosis is a significant barrier to the use of dental implants in the elderly for the treatment of tooth defects. Adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) have demonstrated extensive potential for tissue repair and regeneration. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of ADSCs engineered to express high levels of osteoprotegerin (OPG) for the treatment of bone loss in implant dentistry caused by estrogen deficiency. Methods: A rat model of osteoporosis was established through double oophorectomy, and the rats were treated by gene modified cells Adv-OPG-ADSCs. The effects of the treatment on maxilla tissue changes were evaluated using HE staining and micro-CT. Additionally, ALP and TRAP staining were used to assess osteoblast and osteoclast alterations. Finally, the changes in related osteoblast and osteoclast indicators were measured by RT-qPCR, Western blot, and ELISA. Results: The successfully generated high-OPG-expressing ADSCs led to increase of cell viability, proliferation, and osteoblast differentiation. Treatment with Adv-OPG-ADSCs significantly ameliorated maxillary morphology, trabecular volume reduction, and bone mineral density decline in the model of estrogen-deficient maxillary implant dentistry. Furthermore, the treatment was beneficial to promoting the generation of osteoblasts and inhibiting the generation of osteoclast. Adv-OPG-ADSCs increased OPG, ALP, OCN, and Runx-2 expressions in the maxilla while suppressing RANKL expression, and also increased the concentration of COL I and PINP, as well as decreased the concentration of CTX-1. Conclusion: Adv-OPG-ADSCs promote the formation of osteoblasts and inhibit the generation of osteoclasts, thereby inhibiting bone absorption, facilitating bone formation, and promoting the repair of maxillary bone after dental implantation in the presence of osteoporosis-related complications, especially in the setting of estrogen deficiency, providing scientific basis for the application of Adv-OPG-ADSCs in the treatment of implant related osteoporosis.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the effect of estrogen replacement therapy on bone healing around titanium implants in ovariectomized rats. Method: Thirty six 32-week-old female SD rats were randomly divided into three groups, an ovariectomized group, a sham-operated group and an estrogen-replacement-therapy group. Pure screw titanium implants were placed in the proximal metaphyses of the tibiae 12 weeks after ovariectomy surgery, and the rats in estrogen group were prescribed benzyl estradiol . The tibiae were examined hisotologically by undecalcified sections with bone histomorphometric method and by scanning electron microscope at intervals of 4 and 12 weeks after implant surgery. Results: At 4 and 12 weeks after implant surgery, all the bone histomorphometric paremeters except cortical implant-bone contact rate at 12 weeks, were significantly increased in estrogen group compared with ovariectomized group. While compared with sham-operated group, all above parameters except bone mineralization rate and density of trabecular bone around implants at 4 weeks , which were significantly different, did not show any apparent changes in the estrogen group. Conclusion:Estrogen replacement therapy promotes bone healing around titanium implants in ovariectomized rats, and it may also play a similar role in osseointegration of dental implants in postmenopausal ostoeporotic patients.
Alveolar Bone Remodeling with or without Collagen Filling of the Extraction Socket: A High-Resolution X-ray Tomography Animal Study

Abstract:The healing process of the tooth extraction socket often leads to significant resorption of the alveolar bone, eventually causing clinical difficulties for future implant-supported rehabilitations. The aim of the present animal study was to evaluate alveolar bone remodeling after tooth extraction in a rabbit model, either with or without the use of a plain collagen plug inside the socket, by means of micro-computed tomography. The study included the micro-tomography analysis of 36 rabbits’ incisor extraction sockets, either left empty or filled with a collagen plug. All animals were euthanized in a staggered manner, in order to address molecular, histologic, and radiographic analyses at different time-points, up to 90 days after surgery. The three-dimensional evaluation was carried out using micro-computed tomography technology on excised bone blocks including the alveolus and the contralateral bone. Both linear and volumetric measures were recorded: the percentage of bone volume change (ΔBV) within the region of interest was considered the primary endpoint of the study. The micro-CT analysis revealed mean volumetric changes of −58.1% ± from baseline to 3 months for the control group, and almost no bone loss for the test group, −4.6%. The sockets treated with the collagen plug showed significantly less dimensional resorption, while the natural-healing group showed an evident collapse of the alveolar bone three months after extraction surgery.

Improvement of Peri-Implant Repair in Estrogen-Deficient Rats Fed a Cafeteria Diet and Treated with Risedronate Sodium

Abstract:(1) Background: Postmenopausal osteoporosis combined with an unhealthy lifestyle can lead to the development of metabolic syndrome, a common condition in individuals requiring oral rehabilitation. Bisphosphonates are used to increase bone mineral density. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the action of this drug on the bone repair process in the jaws. The aim of this study was to evaluate the peri-implant repair of rats with estrogen deficiency and metabolic syndrome treated with risedronate sodium. (2) Methods: Twenty-four female Wistar rats were divided into three groups: SHAM: sham surgery; OVX/SM: ovariectomy combined with a cafeteria diet; OVX/SM/RIS: ovariectomy associated with a cafeteria diet and treatment with sodium risedronate. After 30 days, the animals underwent extraction of the upper first molars. Thirty days after the extraction, an implant was installed in the same region. Sixty days after the implant was installed, the animals were euthanized for biomechanical analysis and confocal microscopic analysis. After confirming the normal distribution of the sample data, a one-way ANOVA test was performed, followed by Tukey's post-test, with a 5% significance level. (3) Results: Significant bone preservation was observed in the risedronate-treated group. Higher removal torque values were obtained by the risedronate-treated group. (4) Conclusions: Better biomechanical performance of the implants installed in the animals treated with risedronate sodium was observed.
Is the Jaw Bone Micro-Structure Altered in Response to Osteoporosis and Bisphosphonate Treatment? A Micro-CT Analysis

Abstract:The aim of the study was to quantify the micro-architectural changes of the jaw bone in response to ovariectomy, exposed or not to bisphosphonate treatment. A total of 47 Wistar rats were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated (shOVX) and exposed to osteoporosis preventive treatment for eight weeks either with bisphosphonates (alendronate, ALN; group OVX-ALN) three days/week at a dose of 2 mg/kg or with saline solution (untreated control condition; group OVX). The bone morphometric parameters of the trabecular jaw bone were assessed using ex vivo micro-computed tomography. The regions of interest investigated in the maxilla were the inter-radicular septum of the second molar and the tuber. The regions quantified in the mandible included the three molar regions and the condyle. A one-way analysis of variance followed by pairwise comparison using Tukey's HSD and the Games-Howell test was conducted to explore significant differences between the groups. In the maxilla, OVX decreased the bone volume in the inter-radicular septum of the second molar. Bisphosphonate treatment was able to prevent this deterioration of the jaw bone. The other investigated maxillary regions were not affected by (un)treated ovariectomy. In the mandible, OVX had a significant negative impact on the jaw bone in the buccal region of the first molar and the inter-radicular region of the third molar. Treatment with ALN was able to prevent this jaw bone loss. At the condyle site, OVX significantly deteriorated the trabecular connectivity and shape, whereas preventive bisphosphonate treatment showed a positive effect on this trabecular bone region. No significant results between the groups were observed for the remaining regions of interest. In summary, our results showed that the effects of ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis are manifested at selected jaw bone regions and that bisphosphonate treatment is capable to prevent these oral bone changes.

Abstract:In addition to post-extraction bleeding, pronounced alveolar bone resorption is a very common complication after tooth extraction in patients undergoing anticoagulation therapy. The novel, biodegenerative, polyurethane adhesive VIVO has shown a positive effect on soft tissue regeneration and hemostasis. However, the regenerative potential of VIVO in terms of bone regeneration has not yet been explored. The present rodent study compared the post-extraction bone healing of a collagen sponge (COSP) and VIVO in the context of ongoing anticoagulation therapy. According to a split-mouth design, a total of 178 extraction sockets were generated under rivaroxaban treatment, of which 89 extraction sockets were treated with VIVO and 89 with COSP. Post-extraction bone analysis was conducted via in vivo micro-computed tomography (μCT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) after 5, 10, and 90 days. During the observation time of 90 days, μCT analysis revealed that VIVO and COSP led to significant increases in both bone volume and bone density (p ≤ 0.001). SEM images of the extraction sockets treated with either VIVO or COSP showed bone regeneration in the form of lamellar bone mass. Ratios of Ca/C and Ca/P observed via EDX indicated newly formed bone matrixes in both treatments after 90 days. There were no statistical differences between treatment with VIVO or COSP. The hemostatic agents VIVO and COSP were both able to prevent pronounced bone loss, and both demonstrated a strong positive influence on the bone regeneration of the alveolar ridge post-extraction.

Abstract:Bisphosphonates reverse the negative effects of ovariectomy on bone, but they have also been associated with adverse processes in human jawbone. The molecular events determining bone regeneration and implant integration in osteoporotic conditions, with and without bisphosphonate treatment, are unclear. In this study, ovariectomised rats, to which a single dose of saline (NaCl) or zoledronic acid (Zol) was administered, received titanium alloy implants in their tibiae and mandibles. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, gene expression analysis and histomorphometry were performed. The results show that ovariectomy, per se, upregulated the expression of genes denoting bone formation in the tibia, bone remodelling in the mandible and apoptosis in the tibia and mandible. Zoledronic acid administration resulted in lower levels of a remodelling marker in serum and downregulated gene expression for inflammation, bone formation, angiogenesis and apoptosis, mainly in the mandible, after 28 d of healing. Histomorphometry revealed improved bone-to-implant contact in the tibia, while the opposite was observed in the mandible. The present data show that a systemic single dose of zoledronic acid, in ovariectomised animals, results in site-specific differences in the regulation of genes involved in bone healing and regeneration in association with implant installation. These events occur in parallel with site-specific differences in the rate of osseointegration, indicating diverse tissue responses in the tibia and mandible after zoledronic acid treatment. The zoledronic acid effect on gene expression, during the late phase of healing in the mandible, suggests negative effects by the anti-resorptive agent on osseointegration at that particular site.

Abstract:A novel structure of Reconfigurable Orthogonal Antenna Array (ROAA) constructed with separated feeding network by air gap technique is introduced in this paper. In contrast to conventional antennas producing fixed directional radiation patterns, the ROAA studied here is able to scan the beam over 360° in the horizontal plane. The structures are consists of four Reconfigurable Planar Antenna Arrays (RPAA) operating around 5.8GHz. The main objective of this work is to design and analyze ROAA with its active feeding network (based on PIN diode switches) so as to steer beam at the resonant frequency. The integration of PIN diode switches with antenna enables to steer the antenna beams to the desired direction. This can be done by changing the switch state to either on or off mode for each RPAA. In this work, a number of parasitic elements have been proposed, namely reflector, placed between the patches to increase the beam steering angle. With such configuration, the main beam radiated by the array can be tilted due to the effect of mutual coupling between the driven elements and the parasitic elements (reflectors). The switches are used to select the port at feed network and supply the RF signal to the antenna for the purpose of changing the aperture's function during operation. The 16-PIC power controller output is used to control and supply the DC voltage to activate the RF switches mode. The antenna radiation characteristics have been determined using CST Microwave Studio. These results confirm that the main beam directions can be pointed in the following directions depending on the states of the PIN diodes: 0°, 20°, 70°, 90°, 110°, 160°, 180°, 200°, 250°, 270°, 290° and 340°. The experimental results of RPAA are represented. These results clearly show that the main beam for the antenna can be steered by changing the switch configuration.

Abstract:Aims: Bone defect repair in osteoporosis remains a tremendous challenge for clinicians due to increased bone metabolism resulted from estrogen deficiency. This study aims to investigate the effect of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) combined with fibrin glue (FG) in the extraction socket healing process of osteoporosis rats, as well as estimate the role of estrogen receptors (ERs) played in BMSCs differentiation in vitro and in the alveolar bone reconstruction process in vivo. Main methods: Forty rats were randomly divided into four groups, under general anesthesia, three groups underwent bilateral ovariectomy(OVX) and one group with the sham operation. Three months later, the osteogenic ability of BMSCs, isolated from healthy and osteoporosis rats, respectively, was tested. The ERα and ERβ mRNA expression in BMSCs was also evaluated by RT-PCR analysis. In vivo experiment, Micro-CT detection, histological and immunofluorescent analysis, tissue PCR was conducted up to 2, 4 and 6 weeks after transplantation of BMSCs/FG to assess the newly formed bone in the extraction socket. Key findings: The BMSCs from osteoporosis rats displayed weaker osteogenic potential and lower ERs expression compared with the BMSCs from healthy rats. Newly formed bone tissue filled the socket defect in BMSCs/FG treated VOX rats after six weeks, which was comparable to the sham group, while reduced ERs expression was found in the regenerated bone of the OVX group. Significance: The BMSCs seeded within FG might provide an alternative therapeutic method for repairing the extraction socket defect in osteoporosis condition.

Abstract:Bisphosphonates are widely used for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis; however, they cause several long-term side effects, necessitating the investigation of local ways to improve osseointegration in compromised bone tissue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate peri-implant bone repair using implants functionalized with zoledronic acid alone (OVX ZOL group, n = 11), zoledronic acid + teriparatide (OVX ZOL + TERI group, n = 11), and zoledronic acid + ruterpy (OVX ZOL + TERPY group, n = 11) compared to the control group (OVX CONV, n = 11). Analyses included computer-assisted microtomography, qualitative histologic analysis, and real-time PCR analysis. Histologically, all functionalized surfaces improved peri-implant repair, with the OVX ZOL + TERI group standing out. Similar results were found in computerized microtomography analysis. In real-time PCR analysis, however, the OVX ZOL and OVX ZOL + TERPY groups showed better results for bone formation, with the OVX ZOL + TERPY group standing out, while there were no statistical differences between the OVX CONV and OVX ZOL + TERI groups for the genes studied at 28 postoperative days. Nevertheless, all functionalized groups showed a reduced rate of bone resorption. In short, all surface functionalization groups outperformed the control group, with overall better results for the OVX ZOL + TERI group.
