Abstract:Pain is a universal human experience,yet no two individuals experience and respond to pain exactly the same way and also pain is the predominant complaint patients have after surgery. Anxiety is an emotional state characterized by feelings of apprehension, discomfort, restlessness, or worry. Music therapy is one of the non-pharmacological interventions to reduce postoperative pain and anxiety.AIM: To assess the effectiveness of music therapy in controlling postoperative pain and anxiety among surgical patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Quasi-experimental design Time series with multiple institutions of treatment) was adopted. A total of 40 patients 20 in experimental and 20 in control group chosen by convenient sampling technique. The instrument consisted of two sections: First section comprises of demographic and clinical variables of the patient. Second section was Speilberger State-Trait Anxiety Scale Form Y-1 and Numerical Pain Rating Scale.Reiki instrumental music was selected for intervention. Music therapy was provided through head phone on second and third postoperative day to the experimental group in two sessions in each day totaling four sessions lasting for 30 minutes each. Assessment was done periodically for two sessions at a interval of 2 hours per day after music therapy. RESULTS: The postoperative pain intensity score of the experimental group was significantly reduced from severe to mild level,where as in the control group pain intensity score was reduced from moderate to mild level. (p< 0.001).The postoperative anxiety level reduction for experimental group was from moderate to mild level, where as in the control group anxiety level remained constantly at moderate level. (p< 0.001). There was no significant association between preoperative anxiety with previous experience of surgery. CONCLUSION:Music therapy is a simple,safe and effective method for reducing postoperative pain and anxiety
Effect of Music Therapy on Pain, Anxiety, and Use of Opioids Among Patients Underwent Orthopedic Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background of the topic revealed that orthopedic surgery is one of the most painful surgeries in which music therapy is found to be effective for reducing pain and anxiety. This study aimed to examine the effect of music therapy on pain, anxiety, and the use of opioids among patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. Methods include a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Ovid, Clinical Key, and Google Scholar for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies published until December 2020 in the English language regarding music therapy in comparison to standard care on pain, anxiety, and opioid use among postoperative orthopedic patients. Results of the study included 13 studies, having a total of 778 patients included in a systematic review comprising ten RCTs and three quasi-experimental studies. Meta-analysis was performed on ten RCTs. The results showed a significant difference between the two groups regarding the use of music therapy in reducing the pain [standard mean difference (SMD) = -0.27; <i>p</i> = 0.002] and anxiety (SMD = -0.40; <i>p</i> = 0.0009). No statistically significant difference was found in the use of opioids and physiological variables between the two groups. Conclusion of the current evidence demonstrated that music therapy significantly reduces pain and anxiety among postoperative orthopedic patients. Researchers recommended using it in the routine care of orthopedic patients for managing their subjective feelings like pain and anxiety. Musical intervention timing, duration, and type of music can be changed according to specific clinical settings and medical teams.
Impact of Music Therapy on Pain, Stress, and Physiological Parameters Among Postoperative Patients

Abstract:Introduction: Post-surgery acute pain is often uncontrolled, causing significant harm to patients, despite improvements in pain management. Music therapy can help to reduce physiological and psychological stress, making it a valuable tool for stress and pain Alleviation. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of music therapy on pain, stress, and physiological parameters among postoperative patients. Methods: With 60 samples that matched the inclusion criteria, a quasi-experimental pretest and posttest study methodology was used. Before the music intervention, after the postoperative day 0, and after the intervention on the 7th postoperative day, the physiological parameters for both groups were collected together with the pain score and stress level using a Numerical Rating scale (NRS) and Perceived Stress Scale. Both descriptive and inferential statistics have been used for the data. Result: In comparison to the control group, there was a significant decrease in the study group's mean scores for pain and stress, and found significant changes in physiological variables such as pulse rate, SPO2, respiration rate, and systolic and diastolic BP. Conclusion: Among postoperative patients, music was found to have positive effects on pain, stress, and physiological markers.

Abstract:Background: Music-based intervention has been advocated as a nonpharmacologic approach for the perioperative control of pain and anxiety in surgical patients. However, its impact on patients with preoperative anxiety has not been clearly established. Our study aimed to examine the impact of music-based intervention administered before, during, and after surgery on postoperative opioid consumption and pain levels, as well as preoperative anxiety, depression, and pain catastrophizing. We hypothesized that, compared to a control group, music-based intervention would be effective in reducing opioid requirements and mood disorders. Methods: This study was a single-center, prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial. Inclusion criteria isame-day or observation surgery. Exclusion criteria included American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status IV, use of spinal anesthesia, PROMIS Anxiety T-scores ≤ 57.4 and ≥74.1, preoperative chronic opioid use, transgender surgery, and history of drug or alcohol abuse. Music-based intervention was developed by a certified music therapist. Each patient was randomized to receive standard of care (SC) or SC plus music-based intervention before, during, and after surgery. The primary end point was postoperative oral morphine equivalents (OMEs) over 5 days following surgery using the area under the curve (AUC)Secondary end points were PROMIS Anxiety, PROMIS Depression scores Pain Catastrophizing Scale scores, postoperative nausea and vomiting, time of hospital discharge, and patient satisfaction (0 = totally unsatisfied to 10 = completely satisfied). Results: A total of 75 patients were randomized to a music-based intervention (n = 33) or control (n = 42) group. Patients in the music-based intervention group consumed 56.7% less opioids than those in the control group (AUC was 2.8 in the music-based intervention group vs. 6.4 in the control group, absolute standardized mean difference (aSMD) = 0.34 (−0.17, 0.85)). No difference in pain scores was recorded between groups. Music-based intervention also reduced anxiety on postoperative day (POD)2 (aSMD = 0.38 (−0.16, 0.91)), depression on POD2 (aSMD = 0.31 (−0.23, 0.84)) and POD4 (aSMD = 0.24 (−0.29, 0.77)), and pain catastrophizing on POD1 (aSMD = 0.24 (−0.3, 0.77)). Conclusions: Our data support the use of music-based intervention to reduce postoperative opioid requirements. Music-based intervention may also reduce anxiety, depression, and pain catastrophizing.

Abstract:Objectives Previous studies have reported beneficial effects of perioperative music on patients’ anxiety and pain. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials investigating music interventions in cardiac surgery. Methods Five electronic databases were systematically searched. Primary outcomes were patients’ postoperative anxiety and pain. Secondary outcomes were hospital length of stay, opioid use, vital parameters and time on mechanical ventilation. PRISMA guidelines were followed and PROSPERO database registration was completed (CRD42020149733). A meta-analysis was performed using random effects models and pooled standardised mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results Twenty studies were included for qualitative analysis (1169 patients) and 16 (987 patients) for meta-analysis. The first postoperative music session was associated with significantly reduced postoperative anxiety (SMD = –0.50 (95% CI –0.67 to –0.32), p<0.01) and pain (SMD = –0.51 (95% CI –0.84 to –0.19), p<0.01). This is equal to a reduction of 4.00 points (95% CI 2.56 to 5.36) and 1.05 points (95% CI 0.67 to 1.41) on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)/Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), respectively, for anxiety, and 1.26 points (95% CI 0.47 to 2.07) on the VAS/NRS for pain. Multiple days of music intervention reduced anxiety until 8 days postoperatively (SMD = –0.39 (95% CI –0.64 to –0.15), p<0.01). Conclusions Offering recorded music is associated with a significant reduction in postoperative anxiety and pain in cardiac surgery. Unlike pharmacological interventions, music is without side effects so is promising in this population.

Abstract:Pollen tubes transport two immotile sperm cells in their cytoplasm during growth through the pistil, delivering one to the egg cell to form the zygote and one to the central cell to create the endosperm. Pollen tubes grow through the pistil’s complex extracellular environment and target ovules by following a gradient of small protein attractants, which are secreted by two specialized synergid cells within the ovule. This image shows Arabidopsis thaliana pollen tubes growing in vitro, and illustrates how pollen tubes gain the capacity to locate and enter ovules only after interaction with the pistil tissue. When pollen grains expressing red fluorescent protein (bottom) are placed directly on media in vitro, they exhibit random growth and are unable to target ovules (shown in white; middle). In contrast, when pollen expressing green fluorescent protein (top) is grown through an explant of stigma and style, pollen tubes grow more rapidly and efficiently target and enter ovules. Pollen transcriptional programs are rapidly induced during growth through the pistil, which prepares the pollen tube for interaction with the synergid cells. The molecular components that allow perception of the chemoattractants, which are similarly transcriptionally regulated, are beginning to be identified. Pollen growth in the pistil initiates pollen tube differentiation, maximizing the capacity of pollen to deliver sperm.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Music therapy (MT) research has demonstrated positive effects on fatigue, depressed mood, anxiety, and pain in perioperative care areas. However, there has been limited research on the effects of MT for surgical patients on orthopaedic units. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of MT sessions on post-elective orthopaedic surgery patients' pain, mood, nausea, anxiety, use of narcotics and antiemetics, and length of stay. METHODS: This was a randomized controlled study with an experimental arm (MT sessions) and a control arm (standard medical care). Patients received MT within 24 hours of admission to the unit, as well as every day of their stay. Same-day pre- and postdata were collected 30 minutes apart for both arms, including patient self-reported mood, pain, anxiety, and nausea. Use of medications and length of stay were gleaned from the electronic medical record. RESULTS: Data were obtained for 163 patients, age 60.5 ± 11.1 years, 56% of whom were male. Joints targeted by surgeries were hips (54%), knees (42%), and shoulders (4%). There were significantly greater changes favoring the MT group on Day 1 (pain, anxiety, and mood), Day 2 (pain, anxiety, mood, and nausea), and Day 3 (pain, anxiety, and mood). Among participants with a pre–pain score of 2 or more on Day 1, a decrease of at least 2 points was noted in 36% of the MT group and 10% of the control group (P < .001). Overall, 73% of MT patients versus 41% of control patients reported improved pain (P < .001). No significant between-group differences in medications or length of stay were noted. CONCLUSIONS: We observed greater same-day improvements of pain, emotional status, and nausea with MT sessions, compared to usual care, in patients hospitalized after elective orthopaedic surgeries. Effects on narcotic and antiemetic usage, as well as length of stay, were not observed. More research needs to be conducted to better understand the benefits of MT pre- and post-elective orthopaedic surgery.

The former is applicable to the study of common slight injuries, the latter to the study of rare severe injuries. The author describes two case-control studies carried out in Finland and outlines the principles underlying the design of accident research methods. Details are given of the sample size, classification of injury mechanism and severity (medical intervention, hospital admission, death), eligibility criteria for case selection, selection of controls, control of confounding in case-control data, and analysis of case-control data. Abstract:Aim Patients undergoing surgery experience perioperative anxiety and pain. Music has been shown to reduce perioperative anxiety, pain and medication requirement. This study assessed the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing a perioperative music intervention. Method A prospective pre‐ and post‐implementation pilot study was conducted to assess adherence to the intervention and the initial effect of music on postoperative pain scores (Numerical Rating Scale, 0–10) compared to a control group. Secondary outcomes encompassed pain scores throughout hospital admission, anxiety levels, medication usage, complications and hospital stay length. Results Adherence to the music intervention was preoperative 95.2%, intraoperative 95.7%, postoperative 31.9% and overall 29.7%. The intervention did influence postoperative pain. Patient's willingness to receive music was high (73%), they appreciated the intervention (median 8.0, interquartile range 7.0–9.0) and healthcare professionals were willing to apply the intervention. Music significantly reduced postoperative anxiety (2.0 vs. 3.0, p = 0.02) and the consumption of benzodiazepines on the first postoperative day (number of patients: zero [0%] vs. five [10%], p = 0.04). Conclusion Implementation of music resulted in reduced postoperative anxiety and decreased consumption of benzodiazepines, and the strategy was feasible, but adjustments are needed to improve postoperative adherence. Both patients and healthcare professionals had a positive attitude towards the intervention.

Abstract:Introduction: Non-pharmacological interventions are considered as successful adjuncts to manage pain. We are studying the comparative effects of listening to prayer recitation and music therapy intraoperatively as non-pharmacological interventions on postoperative pain and intraoperative haemodynamics. Materials and Methods: Seventy two muslim patients with acute appendicitis requiring open, emergency appendicectomies under general anaesthesia were recruited and randomised into three groups: Group A: patients who listened to prayer recitation, Group B: patients who listened to music, Group C: control group - patients who did not listen to any prayer or music. Intraoperative blood pressure, heart rate and postoperative pain scores were monitored. Results: The demographic data, pre- and post-headphones application haemodynamics were compared. There were significantly lower heart rates at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 minutes for Group A and at 50 and 60 minutes for Group B patients when compared to Group C. Significant reduction in postoperative pain scores were seen in Group A patients at 30 minutes and 8 hours as compared to Group C patients. No significant differences in pain scores were seen between Group B and C patients. No significant differences in additional analgesic requirements postoperatively were seen in all three groups. Conclusion: Listening to prayer recitation or music intraoperatively significantly lowered intraoperative heart rates, however only prayer recitation significantly reduced postoperative pain scores as compared to the control group.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Music interventions are widely used, but have not yet gained a place in guidelines for pediatric surgery or pediatric anesthesia. In this systematic review and meta-analysis we examined the effects of music interventions on pain, anxiety and distress in children undergoing invasive surgery.DATA SOURCES: We searched 25 electronic databases from their first available date until October 2014.STUDY SELECTION: Included were all randomized controlled trials with a parallel group, crossover or cluster design that included pediatric patients from 1 month to 18 years old undergoing minimally invasive or invasive surgical procedures, and receiving either live music therapy or recorded music.DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: 4846 records were retrieved from the searches, 26 full text reports were evaluated and data was extracted by two independent investigators.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pain was measured with the Visual Analogue Scale, the Coloured Analogue Scale and the Facial Pain Scale. Anxiety and distress were measured with an emotional index scale (not validated), the Spielberger short State Trait Anxiety Inventory and a Facial Affective Scale.RESULTS: Three RCTs were eligible for inclusion encompassing 196 orthopedic, cardiac and day surgery patients (age of 1 day to 18 years) receiving either live music therapy or recorded music. Overall a statistically significant positive effect was demonstrated on postoperative pain (SMD -1.07; 95%CI-2.08; -0.07) and on anxiety and distress (SMD -0.34 95% CI -0.66; -0.01 and SMD -0.50; 95% CI -0.84; - 0.16.CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This systematic review and meta-analysis indicates that music interventions may have a statistically significant effect in reducing post-operative pain, anxiety and distress in children undergoing a surgical procedure. Evidence from this review and other reviews suggests music therapy may be considered for clinical use.

Abstract:Music therapy has been used with promising results to reduce pain and anxiety in surgical specialties. It is suggested to reduce anxiety and pain perception during dental surgeries and thereby improving clinical outcomes. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine whether listening to music during trans-alveolar mandibular third molar extraction reduces pain perception and anxiety. Methods: One hundred and forty-six adult participants were randomized into music and non-music groups, with each group comprising seventy-three participants. Each participant had trans-alveolar third molar extraction with or without music intervention depending on the group randomly assigned. Pain scores of participants were measured at one minute after consent, during and after administration of local anaesthetic, during osteotomy, after tooth delivery, and one minute after flap closure. Postoperative pain scores were recorded at one-hour, 3-hour, 6-hour, 24-hour and 48-hour after the last stitch. Pre- and post-operative anxiety scores were also recorded. Descriptive statistics was used to describe sociodemographic data. Student t-test was used to compare the mean of quantitative variables between the groups while chi-square test was used to compare proportions and to investigate association between categorical variables. The statistical significance was defined at p<0.05. Results: The study showed similar sociodemographic characteristics, baseline clinical features and duration of surgery between groups. Pain score peaked during local anaesthetic administration (p = 0.254) and at 3 hours after surgery (p = 0.170) but no statistically significant difference was observed in the mean pain score. The mean anxiety scores also revealed no statistically significant differences. Conclusion: Music was found to add no significant anxiolytic and adjunctive analgesic benefit to participants who underwent third molar surgeries in this study.

Abstract:The most effective approach to managing patients' pain in the immediate postoperative period may include a combination of pharmacologic agents and noninvasive, nonpharmacologic interventions. In this study, nurse researchers evaluated the effect of music on pain and anxiety levels and selected physiologic parameters of two groups of patients who were emerging and recovering from anesthesia. Patients in the treatment group listened to music through head-phones during the last 30 minutes of their surgical procedures and during the first hour in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). Patients in the control group had identical surgical procedures, received the same preoperative medications, and were managed with the same anesthesia protocol but did not listen to music in the OR or PACU. No differences existed between the two patient groups in the variables measured; however, patients in the treatment group stated that music helped them relax and functioned as a distracter.

Abstract:To prospectively investigate the effect of music therapy on patient's anxiety and pain level during retrograde intrarenal surgery under spinal anesthesia. 286 patients aged above 18 years, who underwent Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) under spinal anesthesia for renal or ureteral calculi were evaluated between January 2023 and June 2023 by a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical protocol. Patients were randomized into 2 groups. Group 1 included patients, who listened to music, and Group 2 was comprised of patients, who were not allowed to listen to music. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) results and pain sensation, anxiety level, together with the results of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), a self-reported anxiety inventory, were captured. The number of patients, who were randomized to the music group (Group 1) and non-music group (Group 2) was 144 and 142, respectively. Mean heart rate in Group 1 and Group 2 was 60 ± 4.19 and 70 ± 8.36, respectively ( p = 0.02), indicative of the fact that mean heart rate was significantly lower in the music group. Heart rate measured post-operatively within the first hour subsequent to the procedure was similar in both groups ( p < 0.05). The VAS score was significantly lower in Group 1. STAI score in Group 1 and Group 2 was 45.51 ± 2.968 and 49.16 ± 1.88, respectively. Therefore, there was a statistically significant difference ( p < 0.001). Music therapy during the RIRS procedure under spinal anesthesia was associated with a significantly decrease in pain and anxiety scores in patients.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy, toxicity and safety of an new domestic docetaxel in the treatment of pretreated advanced breast cancer. METHODS Fourty-four breast cancer patients who had failed in first-line chemotherapy were included in this trial. They received docetaxel as the second-line chemotherapy. Docetaxel was administered alone at a dose of 70 mg/m2 every 3 weeks. The use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor to prevent granulocytopenia was not permitted. The response rate and toxicity were evaluated by World Health Organization toxicity scale and performance status by Karnofsky scale. RESULTS Of the 41 evaluable patients, 4 achieved complete response and 14 partial remission, with a response rate and clinical benefit rate of 43.9% and 85.4%, respectively. Grade 3 or grade 4 neutropenia developed in 42.9%, alopecia in 7.1% and vomiting in 4.8% of these patients. Fluid retention was not observed in this series. CONCLUSION Three-week administration of docetaxel alone at a dose of 70 mg/m2 is effective and tolerable. It provides an alternative for the pretreated advanced breast cancer patients.
Effects of Soothing Music on the Intraoperative Management of Patients Undergoing Tension-Free Herniorrhaphy: A Retrospective Study

Abstract:Background: Noise pollution in the operating room can have adverse effects on the physical and mental well-being of patients. Since the mid-20th century, music therapy has been increasingly used in clinical practice. Soothing music has a beneficial effect in maintaining the efficacy of intraoperative sedation and regulating patients' emotions. Objective: To investigate the effects of soothing music on the intraoperative management of patients undergoing tension-free herniorrhaphy. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 244 patients who underwent open tension-free herniorrhaphy under local anesthesia at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from June 2019 to May 2021. According to the different included time periods, the hospital implemented soothing music management from June 2020 to May 2021, and 110 patients admitted during this period were classified as the study group. One hundred thirty-four patients who underwent clinical routine management from June 2019 to May 2020 were classified as the control group. The patients in the two groups received corresponding management modes during surgery. The perioperative indicators, stress response, anxiety, depression, and clinical efficacy of the two groups were analyzed. Results: No significant differences in the operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative off-bed activity time, and hospitalization time between the two groups (P > 0.05). The study group exhibited lower postoperative cortisol (213.30 (203.40, 229.00) nmol/L) and anxiety (9.00 (7.00, 12.00) points) levels than the control group (246.85 (230.50, 258.40) nmol/L; 14.00 (12.00, 15.00) points) (P < 0.001). Moreover, no significant differences were noted in the norepinephrine and depression levels and the severity of illness, global improvement, and efficacy index scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Soothing music therapy, as a clinical auxiliary method, has a positive impact on the intraoperative management of patients undergoing open tension-free herniorrhaphy, leading to reduced cortisol levels and alleviation of anxiety.

Abstract:Neurosurgery has been on the rise, with a yearly estimate of 13.8 million patients suffering from neurological disorders or injuries and require surgery. Psychological distress is relatively frequent in neurosurgical patients due numerous threats and challenges faced therefore, the main objective of this review is to understand the efficiency of music therapy on neurosurgical patients in reducing psychological distress. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalyses (PRISMA) framework was used to guide the methodology of this systematic review. The PICO format was used as a search strategy in terms of specifying search terms and clarifying limits in relation to the population or intervention studied in this review. Databases like SCOPUS, MEDLINE and OVID, The Cochrane Library was utilized to search for relevant records. A total of 48 studies were identified through the databases search. After the removal of duplicates, 39 studies’ titles and abstracts were screened. Through a process of assessing eligibility, 5 studies were consequently included in the review. The year limits for the articles reviewed were 2015 to present, to highlight the more recent findings on the subject. The studies included in this review encompass different countries of origin such as USA, Canada and in Asia, Taiwan, China and India. The findings of this review show that music therapy is an effective intervention in reducing psychological distress, especially anxiety, in neurosurgical patients. Music therapy is also effective as an adjunct therapy for neurosurgical procedures. The cultural aspects infused in music therapy were also discussed in this paper

Abstract:Purpose: Pain is a common occurrence after orthopedic surgery. Patients need additional resources to manage their pain. The purpose of this study was to determine if listening to music has a positive effect on pain scores and satisfaction in the postoperative adult orthopedic patient. There are limited studies demonstrating statistically significant decreases in postoperative pain in this group. A secondary purpose was to expose nurses on a standard medical-surgical unit to an intervention, supported by the holistic nursing model that they could use in their care. Design and Method: This study was a descriptive, comparative, quasi-experimental design. Patients listened to prerecorded music on individual CD players and recorded pre–post pain scores with the intervention. A satisfactory survey was completed at discharge. Findings: Results demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in patients’ pain scores after listening to music. Length of listening time had no effect. Patients expressed overall satisfaction, and 100% of participants would recommend this intervention to others. Conclusions: Listening to music is beneficial as an adjunct to pain medication and contributes to increased patient satisfaction. It is hoped that the information gained from this study will lead to an enhancement in the standard of care for postoperative patients.

Abstract:BackgroundThe effect of music in the operating room is not fully understood. Through a systematic review the authors aim to give a conceptual presentation of the effect that music has on the pre- and postoperative course of surgical patients and on the effectiveness of the surgical work performed by both physicians and staff.MethodsThe search was conducted both on the basis of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) tree and as a text search using the Medline database (1946 to December 2011). The main search heading was “music in operating room” with the accessory keyword “surgery.” The selection criteria specified the English language and the availability of abstracts or full-text articles. From 85 articles listed with the corresponding search, 28 were relevant and enrolled for the review.ResultsPatients exhibit lower anxiety levels before and during surgery when hearing music and a significant reduction in analgesia and sedation requirements has been observed. Music was found to reduce the heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle effort of surgeons while at the same time increasing the accuracy of surgical tasks. Surgeons who played a musical instrument were found to perform surgical tasks faster. On the other hand, anesthesiologists report that music is associated with difficulties communicating and offering a stable level of sedation. The most appropriate music in the operating room seems to be the classical type.ConclusionsMusic in the operating room can have beneficial effects on patients by decreasing stress, anxiety, and the demand for analgesic and anesthetic drugs. For the surgical staff, music is considered to be distracting. For the surgeon, music can increase the speed and accuracy of task performance.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Previous studies have examined music therapy (MT) as a potential modality to relieve negative postoperative symptoms such as pain. This randomized control trial examined the use of MT on patient satisfaction in the postanesthesia care unit.DESIGN: Fifty patients undergoing outpatient orthopaedic surgery were enrolled and randomized into two groups, those receiving MT postoperatively and a control group who did not.METHODS: After hospital discharge, subjects were assessed with two validated outcome measurements for overall patient satisfaction, the visual analog satisfaction scale and the Patient Judgment of Hospital Quality survey.FINDINGS: The results showed no statistically significant differences between the MT and control group on the Patient Judgment of Hospital Quality survey (MT = 3.42, standard therapy = 3.41, P = .94) and the visual analog satisfaction scale (MT = 91.20, standard therapy = 91.65, P = .88).CONCLUSIONS: MT given in the postoperative setting has no impact on overall patient satisfaction.
