Abstract:Cr(VI) has been a carcinogen for organisms and a hazard to human health throughout the food chain. To explore a cost-effective and efficient method for removing Cr(VI), a Cr-resistant strain named LBA108 was isolated from the soil of a molybdenum-lead mining area. It was identified as Microbacterium through biochemical tests and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Following 48 hours of incubation in LB culture medium containing 60 mg L-1 Cr(VI), the LBA108 strain exhibited reduction and adsorption rates for Cr(VI) at 96.64% and 15.86%, respectively. The removal mechanism was subsequently confirmed through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. In an experimental setup, radish seedlings were cultivated as test crops under varying levels of Cr stress (ranging from 0 to 7 mg L-1) in a hydroponic experiment. With the inoculation of the LBA108 strain, the fresh weight of radish seedlings increased by 2.05 times and plant length increased by 34.5% under 7 mg L-1 Cr stress. In addition, the plant produced more antioxidant enzymes/enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase and catalase to prevent oxidative stress. Under Cr stress (6 mg L-1), the accumulation of Cr in rhizomes of radish seedlings increased compared to the control group by 91.44%, while the absorption of Cr by leaves decreased by 52.10%. These findings suggest that the LBA108 strain possesses bioremediation capabilities as a microbial-phytoremediation option for Cr-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Oxalic acid is the most abundant low molecular weight organic acid (LMWOA) in many environments and offers enormous prospects for treating Cr(VI) contamination. In this study, laboratory batch experiments were conducted to estimate the roles of oxalic acid in Cr(VI) removal by Penicillium oxalicum SL2. Oxalic acid changed the initial pH and provided a suitable condition for the growth of strain SL2 when the penicillium was applied to bioremediation of Cr(VI) contamination in alkaline soil. Gompertz model analysis indicated that initial pH affected the lag time of the growth curve of strain SL2. Scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy analysis showed strain SL2 sufficiently contacted with contaminated soil and reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the hyphae. The results suggested that oxalic acid could enhance the bioremediation efficiency of strain SL2 though improving chromium bioleaching from the contaminated soil and strengthening Cr(VI) removal in the leaching solution. This study provided oxalic acid as a green reagent for stimulating Cr(VI) removal by strain SL2 and would expand knowledge on the roles of LMWOA in Cr(VI) bioremediation.
Isolation and Characterization of Chromium(vi)-Reducing Bacillus Sp. FY1 and Arthrobacter Sp. WZ2 and Their Bioremediation Potential

Abstract:Two native bacterial strains, FY1 and WZ2, that showed high chromium(VI)-reducing ability were respectively isolated from electroplating and tannery effluent-contaminated sites and identified as Bacillus and Arthrobacter. The objective of the present study was to evaluate their potential for future application in soil bioremediation. The results showed that both Bacillus sp. FY1 and Arthrobacter sp. WZ2 were tolerant to 1000mg L-1 Cr(VI) and capable of reducing 78-85% and 75-82% of Cr(VI) (100-200mg L-1) within 24h, respectively. The Cr(VI) reduction rate decreased with increasing levels of Cr(VI) concentration (200-1000mg L-1). The optimum pH, temperature, and inoculum concentration for Cr(VI) reduction were found to be between pH 7.0 and 8.0; 30 and 35 degrees C; and 1x 10(8) cells ml(-1), respectively. Further evidence for the bioremediation potential of Bacillus sp. FY1 and Arthrobacter sp. WZ2 was provided by the high capacity to reduce 100, 200, and 500mg kg(-1) Cr(VI) in contaminated soil by 83-91%, 78-85%, and 71-78% within 7days, respectively. These findings demonstrated the high potential of Bacillus sp. FY1 and Arthrobacter sp. WZ2 for application in future soil bioremediation.

Abstract:In this work, the use of chemical reduction combined with microbial stabilization to remediate Cr(VI) in contaminated soil was systematically investigated. The effectiveness, phytotoxicity and microbial diversity resulting from the combination of ferrous sulfate with microbial stabilization by biogas solid residue (BSR) were determined. The stabilization experiments showed that the optimum Cr(VI) conversion rate of 99.92% was achieved with an Fe (II)/Cr(VI) molar ratio of 3:1, a BSR dose of 5.2% (wt), and a water content of 40%. Under these conditions, the residual Cr(VI) content was 0.80 mg/kg, which satisfied the risk screening value (≤ 5.7 mg/kg) for soil contamination of land for general development in China. The remaining Cr(VI) level was stable for 90 days during the chemical reduction and biogenic stabilization process. Moreover, Zucconi test analysis suggested that the soil phytotoxicity to Brassica campestris L. disappeared. The results of microbial diversity analysis indicated that the bacterial community changed significantly during chemical reduction and microbial stabilization processes, and Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Psychrobacter may participate in the reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III).

Abstract:Bioremediation of Cr(VI) contamination using microorganisms is a promising method for reducing its environmental risks. The objective of this study was to clarify Cr(VI) removal by Penicillium oxalicum SL2 in terms of indirect Cr(VI) reduction by metabolites, interaction sites, and form transformation of chromium. Strain SL2 could sequentially remove Cr(VI) in the bioreactor. Oxalic acid produced by the fungus contributed to Cr(VI) reduction. Scanning transmissiony X-ray microscop (STXM) analysis suggested strain SL2 could partly reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the cell. Amine, carboxyl, and phosphate groups were related to Cr(VI) removal. Chromium Kedge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis implied Cr(III)-Cys potentially acted as an intermediate for the formation of chromium oxalate complexes during the process of treatment. Bioreduction of hexavalent chromium via Bacillus subtilis SL-44 enhanced by humic acid: An effective strategy for detoxification and immobilization of chromium.

Abstract:As an organic macromolecule, humic acid (HA) has been extensively used as the protectant for bacteria applied in Cr(VI) microbial remediation. However, the effect of the structural properties of HA on the reduction rate of bacteria and the respective contribution of bacteria and HA to soil Cr(VI) management remained uncertain. In this paper, the structural differences between two kinds of humic acid (AL-HA and MA-HA) were explored by means of spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization, and the potential influence of MA-HA on Cr(VI) reduction rate and physiological characteristics of bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, SL-44) also were analyzed. The results showed that the phenolic groups and carboxyl on the surface of HA are firstly complex with Cr(VI) ions, and the fluorescent component with more п-п conjugate structure in HA is the most sensitive species. Compared with single bacteria, the application of SL-44 and MA-HA complex (SL-MA) not only enhanced the reduction of 100 mg/L Cr(VI) to 39.8 % within 72 h and formation rate of intermediate Cr(V), but also reduced the electrochemical impedance. Moreover, the addition of 300 mg/L MA-HA also relieved the Cr(VI) toxicity and decreased the accumulation of glutathione to 94.51 % in bacterial extracellular polymeric substance, furthermore down-regulated the gene expression related to amino acid metabolism and polyhydroxybutyric acid (PHB) hydrolysis in SL-44. Finally, the application of SL-MA also enhanced the stability of chromium in soil and decreased its phytoavailability to 86.09 %, which further reduced chromium enrichment in cabbage organs. These findings provide new insights into Cr(VI) removal, which is also critical for evaluating the application potential of HA for enhancing Cr(VI) bio-reduction.

Abstract:Groundwater contaminated by Cr(VI) requires effective remediation to prevent adverse environmental impacts. The biodegradation of Cr(VI) has been documented for several decades, but little remains known about the removal fate of chromium, including the main species of reductase (sites) and functional genes involved in Cr(VI) reduction in mixed bacterial consortium. Cr(VI) reduction in this study was verified to be an enzyme-mediated process. Meanwhile, Cr(VI) reduction of different cell components demonstrated that the extracellular enzyme was the main active substance, and the distribution of Cr after experiment was quantified using mass balance calculation. Furthermore, the optimal pH for reduction was 8.0, with the reduction rate decreasing with increasing initial Cr(VI) concentrations. The co-existing oxyanions had little effect on Cr(VI) reduction, while the presence of other heavy metals had a relatively significant influence. The evolutionary behavior of microbial community structure and functional genes affected by Cr(VI) were also analyzed, which provided new insights on the underlying mechanisms involved in bioreduction in this study. These results generated new understanding of the reduction mechanisms on the Cr-relevant bacterial species and genes, which would be helpful in designing strategies for the bioremediation of Cr(VI) contaminated water.
Enhanced phytoremediation of hexavalent chromium contamination in phosphate mining wasteland by a phosphate solubilizing bacterium

Abstract:Soil chromium (Cr) contamination poses a significant threat to the environment and public health. A phosphate solubilizing bacterial strain Bacillus megaterium PMW-03 was used to enhance the phytoremediation of Cr(VI) contamination by Pteris vittata in phosphate mining wasteland in this study. The results showed that the strain PMW-03 could promote the solubilization of phosphate rock (PR) and the removal of Cr(VI) by Pteris vittata in the phosphate mining wasteland. Compared with the groups not inoculated with PMW-03, the available phosphate content in the rhizosphere soil of the inoculated groups increased by 17.6% and 24.9%, respectively (in the group with Cr(VI) added and the group with Cr(VI) and PR added), and the available Cr(VI) content decreased by 28.2%, 25.2% and 33.4%, respectively. In addition, the strain PMW-03 also promoted the growth of Pteris vittata by secreting indole acetic acid (IAA) and siderophore, promoting Pteris vittata to produce chlorophyll, increasing the concentration of soluble phosphate and reducing the concentration of Cr(VI) in root and shoot. The results of metagenomic analysis showed that changes in biological community structure, enrichment of related functional abundances, and activation of genes (FTH1, FTL, HSP90A, glgP, htpG, glnA, and GLUD1_2) located in microbes contributed to the microbial-phytoremediation of Cr(VI) contamination. These results provide a reference for future research on the microbial-phytoremediation of Cr(VI) contamination in phosphate mining wasteland.

Abstract:To the Editor. —Dr Johansson and colleagues 1 present data from Orebro County in Sweden with a very favorable 15-year outcome for untreated prostate cancer which, if they are correct, would have tremendous effects on the treatment of localized prostate cancer. However, the study suffers from a bias of unknown nature resulting in a survival twice as high as expected. Because of good access to health care in Sweden, almost all patients who later die from prostate cancer are diagnosed during their lifetime; ie, they emerge with clinical disease in different stages before death. A high diagnostic activity can be expected to diagnose more patients in early clinical stages while a low diagnostic activity leads to diagnosis of more advanced tumors. When curative treatment is not practiced, the absolute number of patients who die from prostate cancer within 1 geographic area is largely independent of the diagnostic activity. From official

Abstract:Baiyin city, which is located upstream of the Yellow River and in the central part of Gansu province, China, is severely contaminated by heavy metals such as chromium. A Gram-positive bacterium BYCr-1 capable of reducing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) to trivalent (Cr(III)) aerobically was isolated from a rare-earth ore in Baiyin, Gansu, China. 16S rRNA analysis revealed that it was closely related to Bacillus subtilis. It can reduce 0.2 mM Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in M9 medium after 48 h incubation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image showed that Cr(III) precipitates were located both inside and outside the cells. An nfrA gene was upregulated by 53 folds upon Cr(VI) treatment Furthermore, E. coli-NfrA demonstrated elevated chromate-reducing ability. Our results indicate that BYCr-1 is able to resist and reduce high concentrations of Cr(VI), which makes it a potentially suitable candidate for bioremediation of Cr(VI) contamination. A novel method of domestication combined with ARTP to improve the reduction ability of Bacillus velezensis to Cr(VI)

Abstract:In this study, the Cr(VI)-resistant bacterium LYB-23 was isolated from waste chromium residues in Sichuan and identified as Bacillus velezensis . The chromium tolerance of LYB-23 was improved by domestication (continuously increasing the chromium concentration in the medium from 60 to 200 mg/L). Subsequently, we screened a mutant strain, B. velezensis SA-23, using atmospheric pressure room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutagenesis for 90 s based on the domesticated strain. The minimum inhibitory concentration of B. velezensis on chromium increased from 80 mg/L for the original strain to 200 mg/L for the domesticated strain and to 400 mg/L for the mutant strain. The Cr(VI) reduction experiment results show that SA-23 can completely reduce 100 mg/L Cr(VI) within 24 h, and the reduction rate of 200 mg/L Cr(VI) reached 78.45% within 72 h. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that ARTP mutagenesis did not change the type of functional groups on the surface of bacteria after reductive adsorption of Cr(VI) and the crystalline state of Cr(III); however, mutagenesis changed the biological morphology of bacteria and greatly enhanced the role of phosphate groups in the process of adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI). This experiment for the first time used the combined domestication and ARTP mutagenesis to effectively improve the tolerance of bacteria to Cr(VI) and their reduction adsorption efficiency, which proved to be an efficient method for the breeding of environmental remediation engineering bacteria and for promoting the application of microbial remediation.

Abstract:Most current researches focus solely on reducing soil chromium availability. It is difficult to reduce soil Cr(VI) concentration below 5.0 mg kg -1 using single remediation technology. This study introduced a sustainable soil Cr (VI) reduction and stabilization system, Penicillium oxalicum SL2 -nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), and investigated its effect on Cr(VI) reduction efficiency and microbial ecology. Results showed that P. oxalicum SL2 -nZVI effectively reduced soil total Cr(VI) concentration from 187.1 to 3.4 mg kg -1 within 180 d, and remained relatively stable at 360 d. The growth curve of P. oxalicum SL2 and microbial community results indicated that gamma-ray irradiation shortened the adaptation time of P. oxalicum SL2 and facilitated its colonization in soil. P. oxalicum SL2 colonization activated nZVI and its derivatives, and increased soil iron bioavailability. After restoration, the negative effect of Cr(VI) on soil microorganisms was markedly alleviated. Cr(VI), Fe(II), bioavailable Cr/Fe, Eh, EC and urease (SUE) were the key environmental factors of soil microbiota. Notably, Penicillium significantly stimulated the growth of urease-positive bacteria, Arthrobacter , Pseudarthrobacter , and Microvirga , synergistically reducing soil chromium availability. The combination of P. oxalicum SL2 and nZVI is expected to form a green, economical and long-lasting Cr(VI) reduction stabilization strategy.

Abstract:Microbial remediation, utilizing reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), is considered a promising method for lowering toxic environmental chromium levels. In this study, a Cr(VI)-resistant fungal strain, Fusarium proliferatum S4 ( F. proliferatum ), was isolated from seriously chromium-polluted soil at Haibei Chemical Plant, China. This strain for treatment chromium-containing solution resulted in 100.00%, 93%, and 74% removal at initial concentrations of 10, 30, and 50 mg L −1 Cr(VI), respectively, after 12 days of treatment in a batch mode. Contributions of different cell fractions to Cr(VI) removal were explored. The Cr(VI) removal capacity of various cell components from strong to weak was as follows: cytoplasm, cell secretions, and cell debris. Observations obtained by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that not only the cell surfaces but also the intracellular contents were involved Cr through adsorption, reduction, or accumulation. Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that a large number of functional groups (amino, carbonyl, carboxyl, and phosphate groups) participated in chromium binding on the cell surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of Cr on the cell surface only as Cr(III). The results have important implications for an in-depth understanding of microbial chromate reduction by F. proliferatum . This study provides an insight into the microbial Cr(VI) bioreduction efficiency, and mechanisms in the chromium-contaminated environment.

[Comparison of granisetron alone and granisetron plus hydroxyzine hydrochloride for the prophylactic treatment of emesis induced by cisplatin-containing chemotherapy].

Abstract:In this study, the utility and safety of granisetron alone (Group G) and granisetron plus hydroxyzine hydrochloride (Group G/H) for nausea and vomiting were evaluated in patients with head and neck cancer treated by cisplatin-containing chemotherapy. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the severity of nausea or frequency of vomiting, although all patients in the G/H group showed complete response (no nausea or vomiting) from the fifth day after cisplatin administration. The clinical utility rate was higher in Group G/H than in Group G. The only side effect observed was headache in one patient from Group G. No drug-related abnormality in laboratory tests was observed. These results demonstrate that the antiemetic efficacy of granisetron can be augmented by the addition of hydroxyzine hydrochloride, providing superior control of emesis induced by cisplatin-containing chemotherapy.

Abstract:Bioreduction of Cr(VI) is an efficient and environmentally friendly remediation method. In this study, we isolated and screened a strain of Penicillium rubens LR6 that could tolerate to Cr(VI) and investigated its mechanism for removing Cr(VI). We ascertained the factors affecting the ability of strain to remove Cr(VI) through batch experiments. The results revealed that the strain could effectively remove high concentrations of Cr(VI) and exhibit excellent removal efficiency under different environmental conditions. The removal of Cr(VI) by the strain could be accurately explained by the exponential decay equation, where approximately 9.45% of the Cr was immobilized on the microorganisms. We further investigated the ability of different cell fractions to remove Cr(VI) and found that bioreduction was the primary mechanism involved. This was supported by SEM and TEM analyses, which showed the presence of Cr on the surface and inside the cells. Additionally, XPS analysis confirmed the presence of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) on the cell surface, and FTIR analysis suggested the involvement of amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups in the reduction and fixation of Cr(VI) on the cell surface. The findings offer a novel technique for bioremediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater in weakly acidic to weakly alkaline and high salinity environments, providing potential solutions for remediating chromium-contaminated environments.

Reduction Remediation of Hexavalent Chromium by Bacterial Flora in Cr(Vi) Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Chromium(VI) is a priority pollutant in soils and wastewaters and reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) is a solution to this problem. In this study a low-cost method was proposed to adapt indigenous bacteria and use them to reduce Cr(VI) in solutions. The experiment results show that Cr(VI) could be efficiently reduced by indigenous bacteria under anaerobic and pH-unadjusted conditions. After about 24 h the concentration of Cr(VI) could be reduced from 21.74 mg/L to below 0.5 mg/L. The observed Cr(VI) reduction rates were affected by temperature and pH. Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions could be reduced to Cr(III) completely and partly be incepted by the organisms. Cr(VI) reduction was enzyme-mediated. It was not an energy-conserving process but a detoxification reaction. This method could be used in an anaerobic reactor to treat low-concentration wastewater or industrial water as the last step.
Bioremediation Potential of Cr(VI) by Lysinibacillus Cavernae CR-2 Isolated from Chromite-Polluted Soil: A Promising Approach for Cr(VI) Detoxification

Abstract:The present study focuses on an efficient Cr(VI)-reducing bacterial strain (CR-2) isolated from an abandoned chromate plant in Qinghai Province, China. CR-2 was confirmed as Lysinibacillus cavernae using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. CR-2 could survive at 500 mg L-1 Cr(VI) and effectively reduce Cr(VI) at concentrations of <50 mg L-1, a pH of 5-9, a temperature of 20-40 & DEG;C, and a salinity of 5-15 g L-1. According to the Box-Behnken experimental design, the maximum Cr(VI) removal efficiency by L. cavernae CR-2 was 76.21% under optimum conditions, which comprised a pH of 6.68, a temperature of 28.90 & DEG;C, and a salinity of 9.85 g L-1. With regard to Cr(VI) reduction mediated by L. cavernae CR-2, enhancement in efficiency was observed in the presence of Cu2+ and Ca2+, while significant inhibition in the reduction capacity occurred upon exposure to Mg2+, Ba2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, or Cd2+. Moreover, L. cavernae CR-2 tends to use glucose as an electron donor for the reduction of Cr(VI). Results of cell fraction separation and degeneration indicated that the Cr(VI) removal was primarily due to the reduction of Cr(VI) via chromium reductase in the cytoplasm. In addition, bioanalysis of L. cavernae CR-2 by SEM-EDS and TEM-EDS suggested that Cr was distributed both on the surface and in the cell cytoplasm. FT-IR analyses established that multiple functional groups (hydroxyl, carbonyl, amide, amino, and aldehyde groups) participated in the Cr(VI) biosorption on the cell surface. XPS and HPLC also showed that the Cr(III) end-products could be present as Cr(III) hydroxides or as organic-Cr(III) complexes. This study yields insights into the Cr(VI) bioreduction mechanism of L. cavernae CR-2.
