Abstract:Objective. We aimed to examine the current research trends published by the International Orthopaedics (INOR) journal using bibliometric analysis. Design/Methodology/Approach. Using the Scopus database, we have retrieved all articles published by the International Orthopaedics journal from 1977 to 2022. The key players, such as countries, institutes, and authors, were identified, and their collaborative linkages were analyzed using MS Excel and VOSviewer software. Results/Discussion. We identified 7645 publications from 107 countries, of which 40 were from Europe and 32 from Asia. The most contributing countries were China, Germany, and France. The Netherlands, Canada, and Switzerland were the most impactful countries regarding citations. Hospital Henri Mondor (France) and IRCCS Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (Italy) were the most productive organizations. The most cited organizations were Harvard Medical School (USA) and Klinikum der Universität München (Germany). The most productive authors were Hernigou P (n=91) and Scarlat MM (n=56), and the most cited ones were Mont MA and Rouard H. The most active research areas were “Fracture Fixation” (n=1189), “Hip Arthroplasty” (n=1129), and “Osteosynthesis” (n=754). Hip received the most attention (n=2008), followed by Knee (n=1548), Spine (n=775), and Shoulder (n=517). 128 (1.67%) papers received >100 citations (high-cited papers or HCP) with an average of 150.11 citations per paper (CPP). Giannoudis PV and Mont MA published the maximum number of HCP. Conclusion. INOR has become a popular destination for global Orthopaedic researchers and is publishing their research from all the continents. The total number of publications in it has been progressively increasing and is receiving a more significant number of citations, thus helping to improve the journal's ranking and reputation.

Abstract:Bibliometric analysis plays a crucial role in elucidating publication trends and aids scholars in gauging the reach of prospective journals for their research dissemination. Concerns with impact factor (IF) have led us to examine the trends in IF, corrected IF (cIF), and Citescore in orthopaedic journals from 2016 to 2021 and compare them with internal medicine and general surgery journals. Journal IF and cIF were obtained from Journal Citation Reports and Citescore data from the Elsevier Scopus database for the years 2016 to 2021. Orthopaedic journals were categorized, and 10 medicine and surgery journals were selected for comparison. Mean values were analyzed to identify trends. The study included 52 orthopaedic journals, evenly split between the United States and the rest of the world, predominantly publishing in English. Mean IF in orthopaedic journals increased from 1.93 (2016) to 2.78 (2021), with similar rises in cIF and Citescore. These trends were consistent in specialty and general orthopaedic journals. No significant differences were found in mean IF between these categories. Medicine and surgery journals also experienced significant IF increases. Orthopaedic journals have experienced growing esteem and extent from 2016 to 2021. Specialty and general orthopaedic journals showed parallel growth. Researchers can utilize this analysis for informed publishing decisions, potentially expanding their readership. Bibliometric Study of the Orthopaedic Publications from China

Abstract:Purpose We aimed to investigate the status quo of orthopaedic publications from China and characterize the most-cited articles to provide valuable insights for orthopaedists. Methods PubMed and Embase databases were used to search for Chinese orthopaedic publications from 1997 to 2017 to determine the growing pattern of Chinese research globally. Then Web of Science database was searched for articles with most citations in all journals included in the Journal Citation Report 2016 under the category of “orthopaedics” for the last five years, and the total numbers of articles in the last three respective years were also analyzed. Results The number of publications published in PubMed and Embase during the last 20 years ranged from 218 to 6836, and year 2002 had the biggest growth rate of 59.15% and 2014 had the biggest growth value of 1203, comparing with previous years. Fifty-three articles were selected as the most-cited ones for the last five years. European Spine Journal and West China Hospital are the journal and institution that published the most high-impact articles. Majority of the articles (47%) were meta-analysis, and 6 RCTs were identified in a total of 11 clinical articles. Most high-cited clinical articles or meta-analyses were classified as level of evidence of I (41.67%).A total of 1238 articles, 1264 articles, and 1225 articles in the field of orthopedics from China were included in SCI for the last three years. Conclusion The Chinese orthopaedic research grew rapidly in terms of number of publications in the last decades, and the quality of publications also improved in recent years.

Abstract:The first part of this series provided a brief overview of how antimicrobials, the “silver bullets” of modern medicine, are designed to target specific agents of infection. The second part addressed several classes of antibacterials: bacterial cell wall inhibitors (penicillins, cephalosporins), protein synthesis inhibitors (macrolides, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides), and nucleic acid inhibitors (sulfonamides and quinolones). This third section focus on those drugs used to treat mycobacterial infections (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), fungal infections (Candida species, Aspergillus species), and viral infections (herpes, hepatitis, and influenza). Selected agents in each classification are identified, with a look at the specific use, action, and potential for adverse effects. A brief comment about the challenges for future development of antimicrobials is included.
Global research status and trends in orthopaedic surgical robotics: a bibliometric and visualisation analysis study

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate and summarise the current state of research and trends in orthopaedic surgical robots. Data on publicly available publications related to orthopaedic surgical robots were extracted by abstract searches of the Web of Science Core Collection database. A bibliometric analysis and detailed reading of the publications were then carried out and the information was visualised using co-authorship analysis, coupling analysis, co-citation analysis and co-occurrence analysis in VOSviewer. With 436 publications included in the study from 1993 to 2022, the overall contribution of publications to the world showed an increasing trend year by year, with a particularly pronounced after 2017, and a geographical trend of predominantly East Asia, North America, and Western Europe. Of these, China was the largest contributor ( n = 128). Overall, the UK affiliates and their scholars were leaders in the field, with a high number of publications, total citations, average citations per article and H-index. The most published institutions and authors were Imperial College London ( n = 21) and Professor Fares Sahi Haddad of University College London ( n = 12), respectively. Journals with a high overall impact on robotic orthopaedic surgery were the Journal of Arthroplasty, Bone Joint Journal, International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery. Keyword co-occurrence network analysis revealed four main clusters: robot-assisted knee, hip arthroplasty, spine surgery, and robotic technology research and development. The top three most common sites for robot-assisted surgery use were the knee, hip and spine. The most used robot types were the knee and spine, with Mako and Arobot being the most used robots for the knee and TiRobot for the spine. This study comprehensively reveals the current status and trends of global research on orthopaedic surgical robots, covering countries, institutions, authors, journals, research hotspots, robot types and surgical sites, providing directional guidance and research ideas for further research on the technological development and clinical evaluation of orthopaedic surgical robots.

Abstract:AimWe performed a bibliometric analysis of top 100 systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analyses (MA) in orthopaedic literature and also evaluated articles with maximum average citation per year, which were unable to make up in the present top 100 cited list, but may have a promising future in the world of citations.MethodsThis bibliometric study was performed by searching Web of Science database according to a specific search strategy by two independent authors according to eligibility criteria of the studies. Articles with more than 100 citations were eligible for analysis and were evaluated for following parameters: number of citations, journal name, publication date and year, first author, the total number of authors, average citations per year, methodological design of the study, geographic origin and institute associated. Inter-rater reliability was evaluated using Kappa coefficient.ResultsThe number of citations ranged from 1073 to 198 with a total citation count of 30,589. Inter-rater reliability came to out in the good agreement (Kappa value—0.8). There was visible up-gradation of the research from the 2000 year till today. Spine journal had the maximum articles (26) followed by Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery—America (12 articles). The topics "Spine" and "Sports Medicine" were the most frequently cited topics with 41 and 20 articles, respectively. USA has the maximum articles in the top 100 cited SR and MA. Based on the maximum average citations per year, 34 old articles were replaced in the list with the latest articles that have a bright future ahead and can be predicted to be in the top 100 cited SR and MA of Orthopaedics soon.ConclusionThis study recognizes those articles that have contributed significantly to the growth of knowledge and influenced clinical practices in orthopaedics. We believe that this will facilitate and encourage researchers and clinicians in their future research.
The orthopedics and sports medicine research in India from 2013 to 2022: Comparison with South Asia, European Union, China, and USA

Abstract:Objectives: In the present study, we explored the research progress in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine within India and South Asia from 2013 to 2022. Materials and Methods: In November 2023, the data were retrieved from Scopus databases. Key indicators such as the number of publications, citations, citations per paper, field-weighted citation impact (FWCI), and distribution across journal quartiles were analyzed. Results: While India demonstrated a substantial contribution to the field, comparative analysis revealed it lags behind China, Europe, and the USA in both quantity and quality of research output. Specifically, India (6,498) and South Asia (6,983) exhibit lower scholarly outputs as compared with China (30,350), European Union (EU) (105,228), and the USA (100,041). Citations per publication reveal gaps, with the USA leading (17), followed by the EU (15.5), China (7.7), and India (7.6). FWCI placed the USA at 1.22, EU at 1.2, and lower values were noted for South Asia (0.74), India (0.70), and China (0.69). Conclusion: The distribution across quartiles indicated that India and South Asia's comparatively lower emphasis on Q1 (21.30% and 21.72%, respectively), while the EU, China, and the USA demonstrated higher proportions (49.29%, 27.07%, and 53.05%). Conversely, in Q4, India and South Asia (15.04% and 14.87%) have higher concentrations, signaling a potential area for improving research quality. Recommendations include increased funding, interdisciplinary collaboration, investment in advanced technologies, and a focus on high-impact journals.

Abstract:Over the past 10 years, hip arthroscopy has been increasingly employed to effectively diagnose and safely treat a range of hip pathologies. With research related to hip arthroscopy continually expanding, the number of articles connected with hip arthroscopy has also consistently grown. We aimed to investigate trends and hotspots in hip arthroscopy-related research, and analyze the top 100 most-cited articles on hip arthroscopy. We searched for ("hip arthroscopy") AND ("article" OR "review") AND "English" in the Web of Science database from 1900 to 2022, which was used to obtain all publications relating to hip arthroscopy. Distribution of country, affiliated institution, journal, authors, citation frequency and keywords were analyzed using VOSviewer. A total of 1094 articles were selected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) from 1900 to 2022. The number of publications concerning hip arthroscopy displayed an ascending trend over time. Among the countries, the United States emerged as the largest contributor to the number of articles. The highest prolific institution was American Hip Institute. Among the journals, the highest-ranking journal was "Arthroscopy-the Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery," with 8316 citation counts and 262 articles. The area of greatest research interest was diagnosis and therapy in the field. The scientific articles on the subject of hip arthroscopy have risen continuously in recent years. The United States was the most influential country and made the most significant contributions to this field globally. We identified the research direction and trend for the first time and provided the most recent bibliometric analysis on hip arthroscopy, which may assist researchers in conducting studies on hip arthroscopy.

Abstract:Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a dramatic impact on global health, with orthopedics among the most affected specialties. An increasing number of COVID-19-related orthopedic studies have been published. The purpose of this study was to analyze the orthopedic literature published during the COVID-19 pandemic to guide future research. Methods: The Scopus database was searched for relevant literature published between 2020 and 2022. The keywords used in the retrieval process were ("COVID-19" OR "Coronavirus" OR "2019-nCoV" OR "SARS-CoV-2" OR "Betacoronavirus" OR "novel coronavirus 2019" OR "novel coronavirus" OR "coronavirus-19" OR "COVID 19" OR "nCOV" OR "COVID-2019" OR "COVID 2019") and ("orthopedic" OR "orthopedics" OR "orthopedic" OR "orthopedical" OR "orthopedical" OR "orthopedics"). Spreadsheet software (Excel, Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA) was used to analyze the top 10 cited authors, countries, journals, and articles. The top 5 publication types were also analyzed. VOSviewer (Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden, Netherlands) was used to network and visualize the literature. Results: A total of 1619 publications relevant to COVID-19 and orthopedics were reviewed. Among these publications, the most active country, author, and publication type included the United States, Vaishya R, and original articles, respectively. The most frequently used keywords were human, coronavirus disease-2019, pandemic, and orthopedics. The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery American Volume was the most cited journal, whereas the greatest number of articles was published in the Journal of Clinical Orthopedics and Trauma. Conclusions: This study provides a perspective on the development of orthopedic publications during the COVID-19 pandemic and evidence for researchers worldwide to strengthen global cooperation in fighting the epidemic.

Global Research Trends and Hotspots in Lateral Epicondylitis During the Past 30 Years: A Bibliometric and Visualization Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND Lateral epicondylitis is a common clinical disease characterized by lateral elbow pain, seriously affecting patients' daily life and work. There is a lack of comprehensive and systematic visual analysis of the literature in this field. Therefore, we analyzed the literature on lateral epicondylitis in the past 30 years and summarized the hot spots and frontiers of research in this field to provide ideas and references for subsequent researchers. MATERIAL AND METHODS CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R-Bibliometrix tools were primarily used to collect, visualize, and analyze data from the literature on lateral epicondylitis in the Web of Science database's core dataset from 1990 to 2022. RESULTS There were altogether 1556 items in the literature. Recent years have seen a noticeable development trend in the volume of pertinent literature that is published annually. The United States took first place with 447 papers. Univ Queensland ranked first with 42 papers. Vicenzino B, an academic at the University of Queensland, Australia, ranked first, with 48 papers. CONCLUSIONS Yearly volumes and forecasts suggest the USA will continue to lead the world in publications on lateral epicondylitis, with extensive collaboration among authors. More collaboration is still needed in various nations and organizations, according to an analysis of the research literature from the previous 30 years. The mechanism of action of different injectable preparations, such as corticosteroids for the treatment of LE is still unclear, as well as the cellular transduction pathways through which PRP affects LE.
A Bibliometric Analysis of the Field of Computer-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery during 2002–2021

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of research articles and research trends in computer-assisted orthopedic surgery (CAOS) by conducting bibliometric analyses.Methods: CAOS-related research articles published in international journals from 2002 to 2021 were collected using the PubMed database and analyzed using the bibliometric method. Their publication year, journal name, corresponding author's country name, and the number of citations of all collected articles were noted. Contents of the articles were analyzed to evaluate the time point and anatomical site at which the digital technique was applied. Further, the 20-year period was divided into two halves of 10 years each to analyze the research trends.Results: A total of 639 CAOS-related articles were identified. An average of 32.0 CAOS-related articles were published annually, with an average of 20.6 and 43.3 published in the first half and second half, respectively. Of all articles, 47.6% were published in the top 10 journals, and 81.2% were written in the top 10 countries. The total numbers of citations were 11.7 and 6.3 in the first and second halves, respectively, but the average annual number of citations was higher in the second half than in the first one. Articles on application of digital techniques during surgery were 62.3% and those on pre-surgery application were 36.9%. Further, articles in the knee (39.0%), spine (28.5%), and hip and pelvis (21.5%) fields accounted for 89.0% of the total publications. But the increase in publications in the said period was highest in the fields of the hand and wrist (+1,300.0%), ankle (+466.7%), and shoulder (+366.7%).Conclusions: Over the last 20 years, the publication of CAOS-related research articles in international journals has grown steadily. Although the knee, spine, hip, and pelvis fields account for most CAOS-related research, research in new fields is also increasing. This study analyzed the types of articles and trends in CAOS-related research and provided useful information for future research in the field of CAOS.
Publication trends and knowledge mapping in 3D printing in orthopaedics

Abstract:Purpose: Three dimensional (3D) printing, also called 'rapid prototyping' and 'additive manufacturing' is considered as a "second industrial revolution." With this rapidly emerging technology, CT or MR images are used for the creation of graspable objects from 3D reconstituted images. Patient-specific anatomical models can be, therefore, manufactured efficiently. These can enhance surgeon's understanding of their patients' patho-anatomy and also help in precise preoperative planning. The 3D printed patient-specific guides can also help in achieving accurate bony cuts, precise implant placement, and nice surgical results. Customized implants, casts, orthoses and prosthetics can be created to match an individual patient's anatomy. The 3D printing of individualized artificial cartilage scaffolds and 3D bioprinting are some other areas of growing interest. We aim to study the publication trends in 3D printing as applied to the field of orthopaedics. Materials and methods: A literature search was performed to extract all papers related to 3D printing applications in orthopaedics and allied sciences on the Pubmed, Web of Science and SCOPUS databases. Suitable keywords and boolean operators ("3D Printing" OR "3-dimensional printing" OR "3D printed" OR "additive manufacturing" OR "rapid prototyping") AND (''Orthopaedics" OR "Orthopaedics'') were used, in May 2018. Search was attempted in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Database of Abstracts of Review of Effectiveness (DARE) databases, using keywords 3d printing orthopaedics. A similar search was repeated in pubmed and SCOPUS to get more specific papers.No limits were set on the period or evidence level, as 3D printing in orthopaedics is relatively new and evidence available is usually limited to low-level studies. Trends in a publication on these topics were analyzed, focussing on publications, type of research (basic science or clinical), type of publication, authors, institution, and country. Some citations received by these papers were also analyzed in SCOPUS and Web of Science. MS Excel (2008 - Mac version) and VOS Viewer1.6.8 (2018- Mac version) software were used to analyze the search results and for citation mapping respectively. We also identified top 10 most cited articles in the field. Results: An increasing trend in publications in 3D printing-related work in orthopedic surgery and related fields was observed in the recent past. A search on Pubmed using the above strategy revealed 389 documents. A similar search revealed 653 documents on SCOPUS, many (314) of which were from an engineering background and only 271 were related to medicine. No papers were found in the Cochrane database. Search on TRIP database revealed 195 papers. A similar search revealed 237 papers on orthopedic applications on Pubmed and 269 documents on SCOPUS, whereas a search on Web of Science revealed only 23 papers. Publication trends were then analyzed on data derived from SCOPUS database. Overall, most papers were published from China, followed by United States, United Kingdom, and India. Conclusion: There has been an upsurge of interest in 3D printing in orthopedic surgery, as is evident by an increasing trend in research and publications in this area in the recent years. Presently, 3D printing is in a primitive stage in the field of orthopedic surgery as our knowledge is still insufficient, and costs and learning curve are somewhat high. However, looking at latest publication trends, we are enthusiastic that it holds the key to future in orthopaedics and trauma cases.
Use of Google Scholar public profiles in orthopedics

Abstract:Introduction: The purpose of this study was to survey the growth of Google Scholar public profiles in orthopedics over a 12-month period and to investigate global patterns. Methods: Data was prospectively acquired from June 2013 to June 2014. Google Scholar queries specific to orthopedic surgery were performed at 90-day intervals. Demographic aspects of each user were also compiled, including gender, current location, and primary interests. To determine differences between the growth of Google Scholar public profile registrations and citation counts, as well as differences in growth in different regions, repeated measures of analysis of variance (RMANOVA) were used. Results: RMANOVA revealed statistically significant differences ( p = 0.0001) for regional growth. The largest growth was observed in the United Kingdom ( p = 0.009, 289%), followed by the Asia-Pacific region ( p = 0.004, 177%) and “Other” ( p = 0.006, 172%). The mean growth per 90-day interval is 19.9% ( p = 0.003) and the mean 12-month growth is 107% ( p = 0.05). Statistically significant differences between gender (male vs. female) and basic and clinical sciences ( χ 2 = 22.4, p = 0.0001) were observed. Conclusion: This study suggests an exponential growth in the number of authors in the field of orthopedic surgery creating a Google Scholar public profile, and at the current rate participation doubles every 10.6 months.

A bibliometric analysis of orthopaedic education research based on Web of Science

Abstract:Objective:To analyse the main features and hotspots of orthopaedic education research over a century.Methods:The orthopaedic education research literatures up to December 2021 were searched from the Web of Science core collection and analysed using HistCite software.Results:A total of 2 104 orthopaedic education papers that met the search criteria were distributed across 498 journals and 2 725 research institutions from 96 countries. Studies were broadly divided into three phases: start-up, rise and rapid development. Residency selection and assessment and surgical simulation training were the two main research topics. Orthopaedics, residency, arthroscopy, examination and simulator were the main MeSH terms.Conclusions:Orthopaedic education research is receiving increasing attention from scholars, and residency training remains a current research hotspot, with research frontiers focusing on cross-disciplinary areas such as emerging educational technologies.

Abstract:Background The use of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in treatment of chronic degenerative pathologies of the knee has boasted of an experience of 50 years. The aim of this bibliometric and visualized study is to comprehensively examine the current status and global trends of TKA research. Methods Publications related to TKA research from 2010 to 2019 were retrieved from Web of Science (WoS) and Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) database and then analyzed through bibliometric methodology. As for the visualized study, the software VOS viewer was utilized for bibliographic coupling, coauthorship, cocitation, and co-occurrence analysis, along with further simulation of publication trends in this field. Results A total of 8631 publications were eventually included. The number of publications tends to increase annually worldwide. The USA was the pioneer which has made tremendous contributions, with the most publications and citations, as well as the highest H-index. The Journal of Arthroplasty has published the most papers, while Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research has the highest citation frequency. The Hospital for Special Surgery has made the greatest contribution when total publication number and coauthorship were taken together. Studies could be divided into five clusters: "alignment study", "revision TKA study", "complication study", "rehabilitation study", and "perioperative management study", which have a trend of balanced development in this field. Conclusions There will be an increasing number of publications on TKA research according to the current global trends, and the USA maintained the leadership in this area. Additionally, a trend of balanced development may exist in the field of TKA research, accompanied with inherent changes of hotspots in each cluster.
The Global State of Research in Nonsurgical Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis: a Bibliometric and Visualized Study.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder among elderly individuals. Nonsurgical treatment plays an important role in treating knee OA. The aim of the present study was to investigate the trends and research status about nonsurgical treatment of knee OA.METHODS:Publications about the nonsurgical treatment of knee OA from 1994 to 2018 were searched from the Web of Science (WoS) database. The data were analyzed by using bibliometric methodology. The software VOSviewer was used for bibliographic coupling, coauthorship, cocitation, co-occurrence analysis and to investigate the publication trends in nonsurgical treatment of knee OA.RESULTS:In total, 8512 articles were included. The number of publications increased annually worldwide. The United States has made the largest contribution to this field, with the most publications, citations and the highest H-index. The most contributive institutions were Harvard University, the University of California system and Assistance Publique Hopitaux Paris (APHP). The journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage published the most relative articles. Studies could be classified into five clusters: articular cartilage study, biomechanics study, physiotherapy study, oral pharmacologic study and intra-articular injection study. Articular cartilage and physiotherapy were predicted as the next hot topics in this field.CONCLUSIONS:There will be an increasing number of publications on the nonsurgical treatment of knee OA based on current global trends. The United States made the largest contribution to this field. More focus will be placed on cartilage-related and physiotherapy research, which may be the next popular topics in the nonsurgical treatment of knee OA.
Clinical application of robotic orthopedic surgery: a bibliometric study

Abstract:Abstract Objectives The present study aimed to evaluate the status and trends of robotic orthopedic surgery in a clinical setting using bibliometrics. Methods All relevant publications on the clinical use of robotic surgery in orthopedics were searched from the Web of Science database. Subsequently, data were analyzed using bibliometrics. Visualizing data of bibliographic coupling, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis were performed using VOSviewer. Results In total, 224 clinical studies met the included standards between 2000 to 2019. Global publications presented an increasing annual trend, with the United States found to have the largest number of publications and robotic companies active in the field ( n = 99), followed by China ( n = 38), and the United Kingdom ( n = 27). The institution with the most contributions was the Beijing Jishuitan Hospital in China ( n = 15). The most productive scholars were Tian Wei and Mont Michael A, with 14 publications each. The top 30 most cited papers list showed 29 publications to be cited on more than 40 occassions. The journal with the most related and influential publications on robotic orthopedic surgery was the Journal of Arthroplasty. Fourteen types of robots were used, with the majority applied in knee and spinal surgery. MAKO was the most widely used robot in hip and knee surgery and Mazor in spinal surgery. Most studies were small sample populations of low-quality in this field. The top 20 most frequently used keywords were identified from 950 author keywords. Research on orthopedic robots were classified into two clusters by co-occurrence networks: spinal-related robotic surgery and joint-related robotic surgery. Conclusions The present bibliometric study summarizes the clinical research of orthopedic robots on study type, sample size, type of surgery, robot information, surgical site, most popular keywords, most cited papers, journals, authors, institutions, and countries. These findings may assist the scholars better understand the current status and research trends to guide future practice and directions.

Scientific research output in orthopaedics from China and other top-ranking countries: a 10-year survey of the literature

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Orthopaedics-related diseases and conditions are a significant burden worldwide. In this study, we aimed to compare the quantity and quality of research output in the field of orthopaedics from Mainland China (MC), USA, UK, Japan and Germany.SETTING: The USA, UK, Japan, Germany and MC.PARTICIPANTS: We selected orthopaedics journals from the subject category 'orthopedics' from the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE).OUTCOME MEASURES: The number of publications, the number of publications in the surveyed publication types, impact factor (IF) and citations from the corresponding country from 2005 to 2014 were collected for quantity and quality comparisons.RESULTS: A total of 128 895 articles were published worldwide in orthopaedics-related journals from 2005 to 2014. The USA contributed the largest proportion (31 190 (24.20%)), followed by the UK (6703 (5.20%)), Japan (5718 (4.41%)), Germany (4701 (3.66%)) and MC (3389 (2.63%)). Publications from MC represented the fewest, but this quantity is rapidly increasing. The quantity of annual publications from MC has exceeded that of Germany since 2012. The USA plays a predominant role in all kinds of publication types under investigation in the study, except in the category of meta-analysis. MC was in the last place for cumulative IFs, and the average IF actually decreased from the beginning of the study. For total and average citations, MC still lags behind the other countries in the study.CONCLUSIONS: The USA has occupied the dominant place in orthopaedics-related research for the last 10 years. Although MC has made great progress in the number of published works in the field of orthopaedics over the last 10 years, the quality of these publishing efforts needs further improvement.

Abstract:Public Health Informatics (PHI) education began at the University of Washington (UW) with a Summer Institute in 1995. The Biomedical and Health Informatics graduate program, which is housed in the School of Medicine, is an interdisciplinary, multi-school program. It demonstrates the UW's cooperative efforts in advancing informatics, encompassing the schools of public health, medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, information and graduate schools in computer science. This article provides an overview of the developmental milestones related to activities in PHI and describes the evaluation strategy and assessment plan for PHI training at the UW (http://phig.washington.edu).
Orthopaedic Academic Activity in the United States: Bibliometric Analysis of Publications by City and State

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of orthopaedic academic output in the United States. Methods: Publications based on city and state origin, corrected for population size, median household income, total number of surgeons, and the number of various subspecialties were evaluated. The 15 highest-ranked orthopaedic journals were audited from 2010 to 2014 and then subdivided into anatomic regions and 14 subspecialties. Results: A total of 8,100 articles were published during the study period. Most originated from New York, California, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Minnesota. New York published the greatest number by city, followed by Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, and Rochester. When adjusted for the number of publications per city, surgeons per population, publications per surgeon population, publications per population, and publications per median income per capita, Vail and New York led in two and Stanford in one of the metrics. Conclusions: New York was the leader for the total publications, greatest activity within subspecialties, and publications per surgeon/population and per median income/capita. Vail was the leader for publications/surgeon and population. The top four cities of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago were responsible for 28% of the academic output over the 5-year study period.
