Abstract:Green-grey infrastructures' implementation has progressed significantly in cities around the globe for sustainable stormwater management. This review study conducted on green-grey infrastructures' optimization represented recent research trends, existing research status, possible study gaps, and future research directions and recommendations needed for further improvements. The findings show that the research on green-grey infrastructures has got significant attention recently (after 2012) because of accessibility to computational resources and the development of hydrological-hydraulic models and optimization algorithms. Furthermore, research on green-grey infrastructures is mostly conducted in ten countries including China, USA and Iran ranked in the first three places, respectively, delivering their advantages to other countries with the essential awareness and knowledge. Most previous studies considered particular quantitative and qualitative optimization objectives and these studies were conducted at smaller retrofitting scales, therefore, future studies need to expand their scope towards socio-ecological objectives with consideration of larger study areas or multi-stage planning, designing, and implementation. Moreover, future research is recommended to consider stakeholders’ participation in preliminary planning and designing stages for the successful implementation of sustainable stormwater management approaches. Lastly, the surrogate-based optimization approaches instead of traditional optimization methods can overcome the burden of computational time and resources in future. Abstract:Green Infrastructure (GI) is considered to be an innovative stormwater management approach that offers numerous other environmental benefits including reduction in air pollution and climate change mitigation compared with conventional gray infrastructures, and it has been gradually accepted and used worldwide. This review mainly focuses on the hydrological aspect of GI and provides a of the knowledge about GI as a stormwater management alternative. In this review, we discuss the operating mechanisms of a few widely-used GIs in the aspect of stormwater management. We critically examine policies for promoting GI implementation in some countries, including the sponge city in China and water sensitive urban design (WSUD) in Australia, and review the effectiveness of GI on treating stormwater quantity in real world applications. In addition, we also used Bibliometrics to analyze the GI research trends and found GI has been popular in an increasing number of countries and regions, which China has the greatest future growth potential in GIs research. Moreover, many barriers impeding the further development of GI and strategies to overcome these barriers are also summarized. This review gathers knowledge from many sources to provide an overview of GI to better understand its mechanisms and applications, and to highlight the areas that require future study.

Abstract:In the early 21st century, high-intensity human activities have led to the rapid development and expansion of urban areas in many countries, and these have had several adverse impacts upon the water environment. In particular, urban runoff quantity and quality control have emerged as key concerns for municipal officials. China, as one of the countries with rapid urbanization, faces many challenges in this process. Since the year 2000, China has been promoting the protection of its urban water environment using ecological construction. Use of green infrastructure (GI) to solve urban stormwater issues have become the priority of urban green and sustainable development. The Sponge City (SPC) approach was proposed to emphasize the comprehensive construction of multi-objective stormwater drainage and flood mitigation systems, and to consider water ecology, public safety, environmental protection, and preservation of water resources. The goal of GI is to achieve storm runoff quality enhancement and pollution control, which is similar to the sustainable development concept of SPC. According to its major functions, GI can be divided into infiltration and retention GI, regulation GI, transmission GI, pollution interception and treatment GI. GI should be planned and designed according to the long-term runoff volume capture ratio, which is determined by the annual rainfall depth and the level of catchment development at the project site. Different structural layer materials and spatial layout of GI have significant impact on their effects. Upon the completion of a project, long-term monitoring is recommended for evaluating its effectiveness. In order to ensure the continuous efficiency of GI, it is necessary to carry out regular maintenance. Different types of GI demand various maintenance methods and frequencies. Appropriate maintenance methods can effectively extend the service life of GI.
Urban Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Development: A Review

Abstract:Urban green infrastructure (UGI) can alleviate many of the problems that the growing urban population is facing. This study performed a literature review about UGI and sustainable development (SD) using the Web of Science (WoS) and the software VOSviewer. Of 195 papers selected, 89 are qualitative, focusing on theoretical approaches and design; equally, 89 are quantitative, dealing with metrics and spatial analysis and 17 combined both approaches. A high connectivity between “green infrastructure”, “ecosystem services”, “urban planning” and “sustainable development” was observed. Only 39 of the documents embrace environmental, social and economic aspects. Most of the papers are related to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, “to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” and SDG 15, “protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems”. Further research integrating the three pillars of sustainability and relating UGI to all the SDGs is recommended.

Abstract:Green Infrastructure (GI) offers a contemporary approach for mitigating flood risk, improving water quality and managing urban storm water for sustainable use. Green Infrastructure promotes landscape planning in urban resilience to enhance sustainable development. Moreover, the present literature is lacking in ensuring the comprehensive assessment of Green Infrastructure performance in terms of ecosystem function and considering serviceability for social, ecological and economical system resilience. In this study, robust indicator is proposed to set fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) for quantitative and qualitative analysis for sustainable water management to assess the capacity of urban resilience. Green Infrastructure urban resilience water management system (GIUR-WMS) helps in decision-making for Green Infrastructure planning by comparing scenario generation to ensure urban resilience capacity index. To demonstrate the GIUR-WMS, we develop five alternatives/scenarios in five sectors of Chandigarh (12, 26, 14, 17 and 34) to test common type of GI (rain barrel, rain gardens, detention basins, porous pavements and open spaces). Result shows that the open spaces achieve highest Green Infrastructure urban resilience index of 4.22/5. To implement the open space scenario in urban sites, suitable vacant can be converted to green spaces (for example forest, low impact recreation areas and detention basins); GIUR-WMS is easy to replicate, customize and apply to cities of different sizes to assess environmental, social and ecological dimensions.

Abstract:With the rapid adoption of green infrastructure and nature-based solutions for a low-impact development, much consideration is given to ecosystem services and the ecological enhancement in modern planning of urban spaces. Artificial landscape water bodies have, in recent years, been utilized to enhance the ecological quality of urban environments. As an environmentally friendly measure, the water source of these waters has predominantly been adopting reclaimed water (treated wastewater). As a result, landscape water bodies are often eutrophic, exhibiting poor hydrodynamics, with lengthy water change cycles, creating the ideal environment for algal blooms that negatively impact the aesthetic appeal of these landscape waters. Based on the existing literature, this paper summarizes the treatment techniques and strategies employed in enhancing the quality of urban artificial landscape water bodies and providing integrated design solutions in the urban environment.

Abstract:Climate change represents a paramount challenge for humanity in the 21st century. Green infrastructure (GI), due to its myriad environmental and societal benefits, has emerged as an essential natural life support system and a pivotal strategy to combat climate change-induced risks. Consequently, GI has garnered considerable global interest. As of now, comprehensive and systematic environmental impact assessments of GI are underway worldwide. Nonetheless, there remains a conspicuous scarcity of life-cycle approaches to delineate the evolutionary trajectory of this domain. Employing three bibliometric software tools—the R language “Bibliometrix” package (version 4.0.1), CiteSpace (version 6.2.R2 Basic), and “VOSviewer” (version 1.6.18)—this study scrutinizes the progression of the GI paradigm until 2022. An exhaustive review of 1124 documents published on the Web of Science between 1995 and 2022 facilitates an overarching evaluation of GI, encompassing environmental, economic, and social facets from a life-cycle standpoint. The analysis results reveal that (1) the majority of current studies accentuate the economic and environmental efficacy of GI throughout its life cycle, with the social performance receiving comparatively less focus, potentially due to the difficulties in formulating a social life-cycle-assessment database; (2) contemporary research predominantly concentrates on the life-cycle carbon footprint of GI, warranting further exploration into its water and carbon footprints; and (3) multi-objective optimization emerges as a promising avenue for future GI investigations. This review thus furnishes a comprehensive understanding of the performance of GI from a life-cycle perspective.

Abstract:Urban areas such as megacities (those with populations greater than 10 million) are hotspots of global water use and thus face intense water management challenges. Urban areas are influenced by local interactions between human and natural systems and interact with distant systems through flows of water, food, energy, people, information, and capital. However, analyses of water sustainability and the management of water flows in urban areas are often fragmented. There is a strong need to apply integrated frameworks to systematically analyze urban water dynamics and factors that influence these dynamics. We apply the framework of telecoupling (socioeconomic and environmental interactions over distances) to analyze urban water issues, using Beijing as a demonstration megacity. Beijing exemplifies the global water sustainability challenge for urban settings. Like many other cities, Beijing has experienced drastic reductions in quantity and quality of both surface water and groundwater over the past several decades; it relies on the import of real and virtual water from sending systems to meet its demand for clean water, and releases polluted water to other systems (spillover systems). The integrative framework we present demonstrates the importance of considering socioeconomic and environmental interactions across telecoupled human and natural systems, which include not only Beijing (the water-receiving system) but also water-sending systems and spillover systems. This framework helps integrate important components of local and distant human-nature interactions and incorporates a wide range of local couplings and telecouplings that affect water dynamics, which in turn generate significant socioeconomic and environmental consequences, including feedback effects. The application of the framework to Beijing reveals many research gaps and management needs. We also provide a foundation to apply the telecoupling framework to better understand and manage water sustainability in other cities around the world.

Abstract:Cities are facing more challenges in the way they manage water, especially under rapid urbanisation and climate change. One of the solutions for our cities is to adopt green, vegetated infrastructure into water systems, i.e., so called ‘Blue-Green Systems’. ‘Blue’ here stands for water, while ‘green’ refers to resource and energy efficient, recovery and reuse water systems. They are distributed treatment systems labelled as nature friendly engineered approaches, ranging from, but not limited to, constructed wetlands, ponds, large bioretentions, and swales to porous pavements, infiltration trenches and small raingardens, etc. They are not new and have been increasingly adopted in urban areas under various concepts all over the world, e.g., water sensitive urban design (WSUD) in Australia, nature-based solutions (NBS) in Europe, sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) in UK, low impact developments (LIDs) in the USA, and more recently, sponge cities (SCs) in China. Such Blue-Green Systems are ecologically beneficial and already valued for their beautifying presence and are highly utilised design features in the cities. Abstract:The green infrastructure (GI)/low impact development (LID) facilities aim to control the runoff and its associated pollutants in the context of climate change and accelerated urbanization, so as to make the urban development areas as close as possible to the natural hydrological cycle. Compared with the fragmented facilities construction and research, the large-scale LID planning require deep-going understanding of the impact of LID spatial allocation on surface–subsurface hydrologic dynamics, and the stability of performance for these facilities with the extension of operation time. Based on the analysis of eco-hydrological effects brought by urbanization, the water-soil–plant continuum (WSPC) system for rainfall runoff under the concept of sponge city is proposed. Current technical challenges about parameter optimization, continuous operation, coupling simulation for bioretention facilities are identified and recommendations to overcome them are provided. This new concept points out that source, form and species of non-point source pollutants (NSP). In particular, heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and micro plastics in runoff and their risks to bioretention soil media (BSM). In addition, mulch, litter and their decomposition process under the influence of weather and rainfall conditions; media modification technologies based on solid waste recycling; cumulative effects of pollutants and its ecological risks to soil and groundwater; simulation and optimization of the structural parameters according to local conditions, these four aspects are the bottlenecks of the application for such facilities. The current review critically points out future research directions about the attenuation process for infiltration function, ecological risk for pollutant accumulation, surface-soil-underground coupling simulation. Among them, the runoff-soil-groundwater vertical coupling simulation consists of the following three parts: surface runoff and confluence model, soil pollutant migration and fate model, groundwater simulation model, and their water-balance and energy-balance. This study will contribute to a greater understanding and key knowledge gaps in the optimization and long-term operation for GI/LID system.

Abstract:Green infrastructure (GI), as a concept and as a tool for environmental land-use planning at various scales, has burst onto the academic, political, and policy-making scenes in the last two decades. This tool, associated with strategic planning, offers integrated solutions for improving the ecological connectivity and urban resilience of open spaces, especially those affected by processes of urban sprawl, the abandonment of agriculture, and the territorial fragmentation of habitats and traditional agricultural landscapes. In spite of the advantages of GI, its design and implementation face a range of challenges and limitations. In this context, this paper has two objectives: Firstly, to address a critical review of recent literature on the subject, which, among other things, highlights the lack of references to the role of peri-urban agriculture in GI planning, and the positive contribution made by peri-urban agriculture to the local food supply and other regulatory and cultural services. Secondly, to propose a methodology to contribute to integrating practical GI planning in metropolitan regions to maximize the activation of traditional agricultural landscapes and the improvement of landscape connectivity in metropolitan regions for the reconnection of rural-urban relationships.

A lack of focus on data sharing, stakeholders, and economic benefits in current global green infrastructure planning

Abstract:Green infrastructure (GI) is increasingly popular in solving urban environmental challenges and enhancing ecosystem services. Yet the research status and challenges of GI planning have not been comprehensively benchmarked to date. We explored the GI types, actions, goals, and spatiotemporal characteristics of GI planning cases worldwide based on the available literature. The challenges of GI planning were also investigated by the cases included in this manuscript. Additionally, the urban governance solutions to address these challenges were proposed. We found that multi-type GI planning is the most popular. Data sharing, stakeholder participation, economic benefits and research funding for GI planning research were generally inadequate, although they have improved trend over time. Multiple-goal GI planning frequently has higher levels of data sharing, stakeholder participation and economic benefits than GI planning that just takes into account one purpose. We conclude that the future transformation of GI planning requires efficient data sharing mechanisms, effective co-design among stakeholders, systematic business models, and available research funding.

Abstract:Increasingly frequent urban floods strain the traditional grey infrastructure, overwhelming the capacity of drainage networks and causing challenges in managing stormwater. The heavy precipitation leads to flooding and damage to drainage systems. Consequently, efficient mitigation strategies for flooding have been researched deeply. Green infrastructure (GI) has proved to be effective in responding the increasing risk of flood and alleviate pressure on drainage systems. However, as the primary infrastructure of stormwater management, there is still a lack of attention to the dynamic operation feature of urban sewer systems during precipitation events. To fill this gap, we proposed a novel approach that integrates hydraulic characteristics and the topological structure of a sewer network system. This approach aims to identify influential nodes, which contribute to the connectivity of the sewer network amidst dynamic changes in inflow during precipitation events. Furthermore, we adopted rain barrels to serve as exemplars of GI, and 14 GI layout schemes are produced based on the different ranks of influential nodes. Implementing GI measures on both poorly performing and well-performing nodes can yield distinct benefits in mitigating node flooding. This approach provides a new perspective for stormwater management, establishing effective synergy between GI and the drainage system.

Abstract:Urban green infrastructure (GI) has been widely used in sponge city construction to manage hydrological processes. While studies on environmental benefits of GI from the perspective of whole life cycle assessment (LCA) have been reported in recent years, few have explored and compared the environmental performance of different GIs within a single catchment, which is directly linked to catchment-scale hydrological control. This study focuses on a Sponge City pilot project in Shenzhen, China, including three typical types of GI: permeable pavement, green roof, and sunken green space. By collecting hydrological data, land use, and life cycle inventory of GI and employing SWMM (Storm Water Management Model)-based stormwater modelling, we have revealed the environmental impacts at different stages of the life cycle of the GI scenario and three GIs through comparative and sensitivity analyses. Notably, we have disclosed, for the first time, the effect of the runoff coefficient in LCA. Our findings indicate that over the 30-year life cycle, the total environmental impact of the GI scenario is 24 % smaller than that of the hypothetical grey scenario. Permeable pavement exhibits the largest environmental impact per unit area, being 1.8 times and 7.6 times greater than that of the green roof and sunken green space, respectively. The operation stage of the three GIs significantly mitigates eutrophication and climate change. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis demonstrates that an increase in surface runoff undermines the environmental benefits of GIs. These results highlight the importance of embedding stormwater modelling into LCA, enabling catchment-scale integrated evaluation and equivalent assessment of different GIs within a single catchment whereby the influence of external factors such as climate change can be described, which aids in understanding the dynamic environmental performance of GIs. The proposed research framework and results are anticipated to provide valuable guidance for future GI construction and carbon-neutral policies.

Abstract:A series of eco-environmental problems have generated with the urbanization, which lead the urbanization reform in China into a critical period. While the conventional Grey Stormwater Infrastructure, which is pollution intensive and ecological functions absent, fails to support the urban ecological construction, Green Stormwater Infrastructure, as the key part of urban drainage system, plays a vital role in restoring and establishing a healthy hydrological cycle and preserving the ecological environment. This paper states the significant relationship among rainwater, water cycle and urban development and gives a brief introduction on the concept and the composition of stormwater infrastructure, followed by a explanation of the hydrological principles of establishing a healthy urban hydrological cycle based on the Green Stormwater Intrastructure. It then puts forward the idea of establishing a Green Stormwater Infrastructure based sustainable urban stromwater system, and explains the applications of Green Stromwater Infrastructure Planning and Design with practical cases.

Abstract:Green infrastructure (GI) has become an important tool to achieve sustainability and resilience in cities because of its various benefits, including stormwater management, urban heat island mitigation, air quality improvement, and carbon storage. Most existing studies have often focused on a single aspect, while few studies have incorporated the results of GI analysis into the planning process. To address this gap, we propose a planning framework to prepare the GI intervention solutions, aimed at identifying the priority actions, hubs to extract maximum multifunctionality, and preference types at the regional scale. We applied the planning framework to Wuhan city as a case study, and found an overall significant multifunctional potential. Two-thirds of the benefit pair (including spatial autocorrelation and bivariate spatial autocorrelation for benefits) relationships were found to be positive, and block areas approximately 15% of the total area were recommended as hubs to lay out the GI. Warnings should be received for evidence, revealing that industrial areas have higher requirements for GI that can alleviate the thermal environment and improve air quality. Strong positive correlations between various benefits were found in this area, especially based on a relatively large proportion of existing natural land. Further, we classified the types of GI preference by SOM (Self-organizing map neural network), and found that differentiated GI planning and strategy formulation are required by different types of regions. The planning framework provides intuitive guidance for GI intervention solution making, which can provide planners and government officials a deeper understanding of GI discourse based on clearly explained answers of important decision-making questions.

Abstract:Abstract Cities are incorporating smart and green infrastructure components in their urban design policies, adapting existing and new infrastructure systems to integrate technological advances to mitigate extreme weather due to climate change. Research has illustrated that smart green infrastructure (SGI) provides not only climate change resilience but also many health and wellbeing benefits that improve the quality of life of citizens. With the growing demand for smart technology, a series of problems and challenges, including governance, privacy, and security, must be addressed. This paper explores the potential to transition from grey, green, or smart silos to work with nature-based solutions and smart technology to help change cities to achieve considerable environmental and socio-economic benefits. The concepts of grey, green, and smart infrastructure are presented, and the needs, benefits, and applications are investigated. Moreover, the advantages of using integrated smart, green nature-based solutions are discussed. A comprehensive literature review is undertaken with keyword searches, including journal papers, stakeholder and case study reports, and local authority action plans. The methodology adopts multimethod qualitative information review, including literature, case studies, expert interviews, and documentary analysis. Published data and information are analysed to capture the key concepts in implementing SGI systems, such as storm-water control, flood and coastal defense, urban waste management, transportation, recreation, and asset management. The paper investigates the elimination of silo approaches and the alleviation of the destructions caused by extreme weather events using these interdependent SGI systems supported by novel data-driven platforms to provide nature-based solutions to boost the health and wellbeing of the residents.

Abstract:Management of urban hydrologic processes using green infrastructure (GI) has largely focused on stormwater management. Thus, design and implementation of GI usually rely on physical site characteristics and local rainfall patterns, and do not typically account for human or social dimensions. This traditional approach leads to highly centralized stormwater management in a disconnected urban landscape, and can deemphasize additional benefits that GI offers, such as increased property value, greenspace aesthetics, heat island amelioration, carbon sequestration, and habitat for biodiversity. We propose a Framework for Adaptive Socio-Hydrology (FrASH) in which GI planning and implementation moves from a purely hydrology-driven perspective to an integrated socio-hydrological approach. This allows for an iterative, multifaceted decision-making process that would enable a network of stakeholders to collaboratively set a dynamic, context-guided project plan for the installation of GI, rather than a 'one-size-fits-all' installation. We explain how different sectors (e.g., governance, non-governmental organizations, academia, and industry) can create a connected network of organizations that work towards a common goal. Through a graphical Chambered Nautilus model, FrASH is experimentally applied to contrasting GI case studies and shows that this multi-stakeholder, connected, de-centralized network with a co-evolving decision-making project plan results in enhanced multi-functionality, potentially allowing for the management of resilience in urban systems at multiple scales.

Abstract:Increasing urbanization and the associated sealing of areas and the use of storm sewer systems for drainage not only increase the risk of flooding but also reduce water quality in streams into which stormwater is discharged. Green infrastructure (GI) measures are applied with the aim of managing this stormwater sustainably and reducing the associated risks. To this end, a quantitative–qualitative approach was developed to simulate GI—namely, rain gardens, bioretention cells, and vegetative bioswales—at the urban catchment scale. The findings highlight the potential of applying GI measures to managing stormwater more effectively in urban environments and mitigating its negative pollution-related impacts. For the housing estate analyzed, a simulated implementation of GI resulted in a reduction in pollution, measured as total nitrogen (N; 9–52%), nitrate-N (5–30%), total phosphorus (11–59%), chemical oxygen demand (8–46%), total suspended solids (13–73%), copper (12–64%), zinc (Zn; 16–87%), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (16–91%), and the hydrocarbon oil index (HOI; 15–85%). Reducing the concentrations of pollutants minimizes the risk to human health determined via the HOI from a low-risk level to zero risk and reduces the ecological risk in terms of Zn pollution from a significant risk to a low risk of adverse effects. The modeling conducted clearly shows that the GI solutions implemented facilitated a quantitative reduction and a qualitative improvement in stormwater, which is crucial from an environmental perspective and ensures a sustainable approach to stormwater management. Lowering the levels of stormwater pollution through the implementation of GI will consequently lower the environmental burden of pollutants in urban areas.
