Abstract:Purpose of reviewThe long-lived viral reservoir is a major obstacle to achieving a cure for HIV. Therapeutic strategies, such as early antiretroviral therapy (ART), may be a prerequisite to achieving long-term control of viral replication upon ART withdrawal. Recent findingsHIV persistence is established early in acute HIV infection (AHI) with infection in long-lived memory CD4+ T cells. Studies conducted in nonhuman primates have suggested that this could occur as early as 3 days postinfection; however, the timing in humans is uncertain. ART during AHI significantly restricts the HIV reservoirs as compared with later treatment. Early ART, particularly prior to the detection of HIV immunoglobulin M, may also reduce the contribution of the long-lived central memory CD4+ T cells to the total HIV reservoir, a profile observed in individuals who naturally control HIV without ART. SummaryIt is clear that early ART has a greater impact in limiting the HIV reservoirs than later treatment. However, latently infected long-lived memory CD4+ T cells persist in most early treated individuals. Therefore, additional interventions will likely be required to eliminate all cells capable of producing replication-competent virus but treatment in AHI may be the critical first step in containing the HIV reservoirs.
Different Functional Alteration in Attention‐deficit/hyperactivity Disorder Across Developmental Age Groups: A Meta‐analysis and an Independent Validation of Resting‐state Functional Connectivity Studies

Abstract:AbstractBackgroundAttention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly complex and heterogeneous disorder. Abnormal brain connectivity in ADHD might be influenced by developmental ages which might lead to the lacking of significant spatial convergence across studies. However, the developmental patterns and mechanisms of ADHD brain connectivity remain to be fully uncovered.MethodsIn the present study, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase for seed‐based whole‐brain resting‐state functional connectivity studies of ADHD published through October 12th, 2020. The seeds meeting inclusion criteria were categorized into the cortex group and subcortex group, as previous studies suggested that the cortex and subcortex have different temporal patterns of development. Activation likelihood estimation meta‐analysis was performed to investigate the abnormal connectivity in different age groups (all‐age group, younger: <12 years, older: ≥12 years). Moreover, significant convergence of reported foci was used as seeds for validation with our independent dataset.ResultsAs with previous studies, scarce results were found in the all‐age group. However, we found that the younger group consistently exhibited hyper‐connectivity between different parts of the cortex and left middle frontal gyrus, and hypo‐connectivity between different parts of the cortex and left putamen/pallidus/amygdala. Whereas, the older group (mainly for adults) showed hyper‐connectivity between the cortex and right precuneus/sub‐gyral/cingulate gyrus. Besides, the abnormal cortico‐cortical and cortico‐subcortical functional connectivity in children, and the abnormal cortico‐cortical functional connectivity in adults were verified in our independent dataset.ConclusionOur study emphasizes the importance of developmental age effects on the study of brain networks in ADHD. Further, we proposed that cortico‐cortical and cortico‐subcortical connectivity might play an important role in the pathophysiology of children with ADHD, while abnormal cortico‐cortical connections were more important for adults with ADHD. This work provided a potential new insight to understand the neurodevelopmental mechanisms and possible clinical application of ADHD.
Functional connectivity in ADHD children doing Go/No-Go tasks: An fMRI systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders diagnosed in childhood. Two common features of ADHD are impaired behavioural inhibition and sustained attention. The Go/No-Go experimental paradigm with concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning has previously revealed important neurobiological correlates of ADHD such as the supplementary motor area and the prefrontal cortex. The coordinate-based meta-analysis combined with quantitative techniques, such as activation likelihood estimate (ALE) generation, provides an unbiased and objective method of summarising these data to understand the brain network architecture and connectivity in ADHD children. Go/No-Go task-based fMRI studies involving children and adolescent subjects were selected. Coordinates indicating foci of activation were collected to generate ALEs using threshold values (voxel-level: p < 0.001; cluster-level: p < 0.05). ALEs were matched to one of seven canonical brain networks based on the cortical parcellation scheme derived from the Human Connectome Project. Fourteen studies involving 457 children met the eligibility criteria. No significant convergence of Go/No-Go related brain activation was found for ADHD groups. Three significant ALE clusters were detected for brain activation relating to controls or ADHD < controls. Significant clusters were related to specific areas of the default mode network (DMN). Network-based analysis revealed less extensive DMN, dorsal attention network, and limbic network activation in ADHD children compared to controls. The presence of significant ALE clusters may be due to reduced homogeneity in the selected sample demographic and experimental paradigm. Further investigations regarding hemispheric asymmetry in ADHD subjects would be beneficial.

Connectome-wide association analysis identified significant brain functional alteration in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Abstract:Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as an extreme-phenotype of ADHD, is still facing problems of inconsistency and undeciphered mechanisms for its neuropathology. To address this matter, our present study performed connecotome-wide voxel-based analyses with the resting-state fMRI data of 84 adults with ADHD and 89 healthy controls. We found that functional connectivity patterns of the left precuneus and the left middle temporal significantly altered in ADHD populations serving as potential neural biomarkers to distinguish ADHD with healthy controls, with subsequent seed-based analysis revealing the dysfunction of functional connections both intra- and inter-default mode and attention networks, among which middle temporal gyrus plays the key role of ‘bridge’ linking the default mode and attention networks. After cognitive behavioral therapy, two of these ADHD-altered functional connections ameliorated accompanied with improvement of ADHD core symptoms. Additionally, imaging genetic analyses also revealed close relationships between the observed brain functional alterations and ADHD-risk genes. Taken together, our findings suggested the interference of default mode on attention networks in adults with ADHD, which would be severing as a potential biomarker for both ADHD pathogenesis and treatment effects. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

Abstract:AbstractDeficits in task-related attentional engagement in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been hypothesised to be due to altered interrelationships between attention, default mode and salience networks. We examined the intrinsic connectivity during rest within and between these networks. Six-minute resting-state scans were obtained. Using a network-based approach, connectivity within and between the dorsal and ventral attention, the default mode and the salience networks was compared between the ADHD and control group. The ADHD group displayed hyperconnectivity between the two attention networks and within the default mode and ventral attention network. The salience network was hypoconnected to the dorsal attention network. There were trends towards hyperconnectivity within the dorsal attention network and between the salience and ventral attention network in ADHD. Connectivity within and between other networks was unrelated to ADHD. Our findings highlight the altered connectivity within and between attention networks, and between them and the salience network in ADHD. One hypothesis to be tested in future studies is that individuals with ADHD are affected by an imbalance between ventral and dorsal attention systems with the former playing a dominant role during task engagement, making individuals with ADHD highly susceptible to distraction by salient task-irrelevant stimuli.

Abstract:In the last two decades, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has emerged as one of the most effective technologies in clinical research of the human brain. fMRI allows researchers to study healthy and pathological brains while they perform various neuropsychological functions. Beyond task-related activations, the human brain has some intrinsic activity at a task-negative (resting) state that surprisingly consumes a lot of energy to support communication among neurons. Recent neuroimaging research has also seen an increase in modeling and analyzing brain activity in terms of a graph or network. Since graph models facilitate a systems-theoretic explanation of the brain, they have become increasingly relevant with advances in network science and the popularization of complex systems theory. The purpose of this study is to look into the abnormalities in resting brain functions in adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The primary goal is to investigate resting-state functional connectivity (FC), which can be construed as a significant temporal coincidence in blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signals between functionally related brain regions in the absence of any stimulus or task. When compared to healthy controls, ADHD patients have lower average connectivity in the Supramarginal Gyrus and Superior Parietal Lobule, but higher connectivity in the Lateral Occipital Cortex and Inferior Temporal Gyrus. We also hypothesize that the network organization of default mode and dorsal attention regions is abnormal in ADHD patients.
Altered neural circuits related to sustained attention and executive control in children with ADHD: An event-related fMRI study

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the neural basis of sustained attention, executive processing, and cognitive control in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).METHODS: Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to compare brain activation of 28 medication-naïve children with ADHD aged 7-12 years and 31 healthy controls during a cued continuous performance task (AX-CPT) in three stimulus context conditions (Go, NoGo, Lure).RESULTS: The children with ADHD showed increased activation in the left middle frontal gyrus, bilateral middle temporal gyrus, left precuneus and right cerebellum posterior lobe under the Lure condition compared to the controls. In the Lure condition, in contrast to the NoGo condition, an increased activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus, right medial frontal gyrus and right inferior parietal gyrus was observed in ADHD children.CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrate that medication-naïve ADHD children show spatial and temporal abnormalities in neural activities involved in sustained attention and executive control.SIGNIFICANCE: These findings show that there are distinct alternations in neural circuits related to sustained attention and executive control in children with ADHD, and further improve our understanding of the neural substrates of cognitive impairment in children with ADHD.

Abstract:Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric, neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral disorders occurring in the childhood of human. The typical symptoms are characterized as excessive inattention, hyperactivity/impulsiveness or their combination. Traditionally, it has been thought to be a partial dysfunction caused by prefrontal-striatal circuits. Recent studies, however, indicate the involvement of other brain regions, including the occipital cortex and temporal cortex. Though researchers have already realized the importance of evaluation for the whole brain and multiple structural/functional networks, it is still very challenging to achieve consistent and comparable results across different labs. In the present paper, through the predefined cortical landmarks which possess group-wise structural consistency and intrinsic correspondence, we have the opportunity to access the whole brain and to reveal large-scale structural/functional connectomics abnormalities in ADHD. Our results not only confirmed that the major white matter (WM) alterations occurred at the anterior and posterior regions, but also indicate that hyper-interactions mainly exist between the emotion network and memory related networks. Our results also showed that hypo-interactions are found between the emotion and execution/attention networks. Hence, we hypothesize that the abnormal interactions associated with emotion network contribute to the dysfunction within the ADHD brain.
Evaluation of potential alterations related to ADHD in the effective connectivity between the default mode network and cerebellum, hippocampus, thalamus, and primary visual cortex

Abstract:Hyperactivity in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) leads to restlessness and impulse-control impairments. Nevertheless, the relation between ADHD symptoms and brain regions interactions remains unclear. We focused on dynamic causal modeling to study the effective connectivity in a fully connected network comprised of four regions of the default mode network (DMN) (linked to response control behaviors) and four other regions with previously-reported structural alterations due to ADHD. Then, via the parametric empirical Bayes analysis, the most significant connections, with the highest correlation to the covariates ADHD/control, age, and sex were extracted. Our results demonstrated a positive correlation between ADHD and effective connectivity between the right cerebellum and three DMN nodes (intrinsically inhibitory connections). Therefore, an increase in the effective connectivity leads to more inhibition imposition from the right cerebellum to DMN that reduces this network activation. The lower DMN activity makes leaving the resting-state easier, which may be involved in the restlessness symptom. Furthermore, our results indicated a negative correlation between age and these connections. We showed that the difference between the average of effective connectivities of ADHD and control groups in the age-range of 7-11 years disappeared after 14 years-old. Therefore, aging tends to alleviate ADHD-specific symptoms.

Abstract:AIMS:Functional brain abnormalities, including altered cerebral perfusion and functional connectivities, have been illustrated in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (aADHD). The present study attempted to explore the alterations of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) simultaneously to understand the neural mechanisms for adults with ADHD comprehensively.METHODS:Resting-state arterial spin labeling (ASL) and blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were acquired for 69 male aADHD and 69 matched healthy controls (HCs). The altered CBFs associated with aADHD were explored based on both categorical (aADHD vs HCs) and dimensional (correlation with aADHD core symptoms) perspectives. Then, the seed-based RSFC analyses were developed for the regions showing significant alterations of CBF.RESULTS:Significantly decreased CBF in the large-scale resting-state networks regions (eg, ventral attentional network, somatomotor network, limbic network) and subcortical regions was indicated in aADHD compared with HCs. The correlation analyses indicated that the hypoperfusion in left putamen/global pallidum and left amygdala/hippocampus was correlated with ADHD inattentive and total symptoms, respectively. Further, weaker negative functional connectivity between left amygdala and bilateral supplementary motor area, bilateral superior frontal gyrus, and left medial frontal gyrus was found in adults with ADHD.CONCLUSION:The present findings suggested alterations of both cerebral perfusion and functional connectivity for the left amygdala in aADHD. The combination of CBF and RSFCs may help to interpret the neuropathogenesis of ADHD more comprehensively.

Abstract:Background Working memory (WM) deficits are among the most prominent cognitive impairments in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While functional connectivity is a prevailing approach in brain imaging of ADHD, alterations in WM-related functional brain networks and their malleability by cognitive training are not well known. We examined whole-brain functional connectivity differences between adults with and without ADHD during n -back WM tasks and rest at pretest, as well as the effects of WM training on functional and structural brain connectivity in the ADHD group. Methods Forty-two adults with ADHD and 36 neurotypical controls performed visuospatial and verbal n -back tasks during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In addition, seven-minute resting state fMRI data and diffusion-weighted MR images were collected from all participants. The adults with ADHD continued into a 5-week randomized controlled WM training trial (experimental group training on a dual n -back task, n = 21; active control group training on Bejeweled II video game, n = 21), followed by a posttraining MRI. Brain connectivity was examined with Network-Based Statistic. Results At the pretest, adults with ADHD had decreased functional connectivity compared with the neurotypical controls during both n -back tasks in networks encompassing fronto-parietal, temporal, occipital, cerebellar, and subcortical brain regions. Furthermore, WM-related connectivity in widespread networks was associated with performance accuracy in a continuous performance test. Regarding resting state connectivity, no group differences or associations with task performance were observed. WM training did not modulate functional or structural connectivity compared with the active controls. Conclusion Our results indicate large-scale abnormalities in functional brain networks underlying deficits in verbal and visuospatial WM commonly faced in ADHD. Training-induced plasticity in these networks may be limited

Abstract:Introduction Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric condition that frequently originates in early development and is associated with a variety of functional impairments. Despite a large functional neuroimaging literature on ADHD, our understanding of the neural basis of this disorder remains limited, and existing primary studies on the topic include somewhat divergent results. Objectives The present meta-analysis aims to advance our understanding of the neural basis of ADHD by identifying the most statistically robust patterns of abnormal neural activation throughout the whole-brain in individuals diagnosed with ADHD compared to age-matched healthy controls. Methods We conducted a meta-analysis of task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activation studies of ADHD. This included, according to PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive PubMed search and predetermined inclusion criteria as well as two independent coding teams who evaluated studies and included all task-based, whole-brain, fMRI activation studies that compared participants diagnosed with ADHD to age-matched healthy controls. We then performed multilevel kernel density analysis (MKDA) a well-established, whole-brain, voxelwise approach that quantitatively combines existing primary fMRI studies, with ensemble thresholding (p<0.05-0.0001) and multiple comparisons correction. Results Participants diagnosed with ADHD (N=1,550), relative to age-matched healthy controls (N=1,340), exhibited statistically significant (p<0.05-0.0001; FWE-corrected) patterns of abnormal activation in multiple brains of the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia across a variety of cognitive control tasks. Conclusions This study advances our understanding of the neural basis of ADHD and may aid in the development of new brain-based clinical interventions as well as diagnostic tools and treatment matching protocols for patients with ADHD. Future studies should also investigate the similarities and differences in neural signatures between ADHD and other highly comorbid psychiatric disorders. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Functional Connectivity and Temporal Variability of Brain Connections in Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Bipolar Disorder

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To assess brain functional connectivity and variability in adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or euthymic bipolar disorder (BD) relative to a control (CT) group.METHODS: Electroencephalography (EEG) was measured in 35 participants (BD = 11; ADHD = 9; CT = 15) during an eyes-closed 10-min rest period, and connectivity and graph theory metrics were computed. A coefficient of variation (CV) computed also the connectivity's temporal variability of EEG. Multivariate associations between functional connectivity and clinical and neuropsychological profiles were evaluated.RESULTS: An enhancement of functional connectivity was observed in the ADHD (fronto-occipital connections) and BD (diffuse connections) groups. However, compared with CTs, intrinsic variability (CV) was enhanced in the ADHD group and reduced in the BD group. Graph theory metrics confirmed the existence of several abnormal network features in both affected groups. Significant associations of connectivity with symptoms were also observed. In the ADHD group, temporal variability of functional connections was associated with executive function and memory deficits. Depression, hyperactivity and impulsivity levels in the ADHD group were associated with abnormal intrinsic connectivity. In the BD group, levels of anxiety and depression were related to abnormal frontotemporal connectivity.CONCLUSIONS: In the ADHD group, we found that intrinsic variability was associated with deficits in cognitive performance and that connectivity abnormalities were related to ADHD symptomatology. The BD group exhibited less intrinsic variability and more diffuse long-range brain connections, and those abnormalities were related to interindividual differences in depression and anxiety. These preliminary results are relevant for neurocognitive models of abnormal brain connectivity in both disorders.

Abstract:Background The pathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by atypical brain network organization and dynamics. Although functional brain networks adaptively reconfigure across cognitive contexts, previous studies have largely focused on network dysfunction during the resting-state. This preliminary study examined how functional brain network organization and dynamics flexibly reconfigure across rest and two cognitive control tasks with different cognitive demands in 30 children with ADHD and 36 typically developing (TD) children (8-12 years). Methods We leveraged graph theoretical analyses to interrogate the segregation (modularity, within-module degree) and integration (global efficiency, node dissociation index) of fronto-parietal, cingulo-opercular/salience, default mode, somatomotor, and visual networks. We also conducted edge timeseries analyses to quantify connectivity dynamics within and between these networks. Results Across resting and task-based states, children with ADHD demonstrated significantly lower whole-graph modularity and greater node dissociation index between default mode and visual networks. Further, a significant task-by-diagnosis interaction was observed for fronto-parietal network within-module degree, which decreased from rest to task in children with ADHD but increased in TD children. Finally, children with ADHD displayed significantly more dynamic connectivity within and across cingulo-opercular/salience, default mode, and somatomotor networks, especially during task performance. Exploratory analyses revealed associations between network dynamics, cognitive performance, and ADHD symptoms. Conclusions By integrating static and dynamic network analyses across changing cognitive demands, this study provides novel insight into how context-specific, context-general, and timescale-dependent network connectivity is altered in children with ADHD. Our findings highlight the involvement and clinical relevance of both association and sensory/motor systems in ADHD.

Abstract:Background Numerous neuroimaging studies utilizing resting-state functional imaging and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) have identified variations in distinct brain regions among individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the results have been inconsistent. Methods A comprehensive voxel-wise meta-analysis was performed on studies employing resting-state functional imaging and gray matter volume (GMV), examining discrepancies between individuals with ADHD and neurotypical controls (NCs). The analysis utilized the Seed-based d Mapping software. Results A systematic review of the literature identified 21 functional imaging studies (595 ADHD and 564 controls) and 50 GMV studies (1907 ADHD and 1611 controls). In general, individuals with ADHD exhibited increased resting-state functional activity in the right parahippocampal gyrus and bilateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), as well as decreased resting-state functional activity in the bilateral cingulate cortex (including the posterior cingulate cortex [PCC], median cingulate cortex [MCC], and anterior cingulate cortex [ACC]). The VBM meta-analysis revealed decreased GMV in the bilateral OFC, right putamen (extending to right superior temporal gyrus [STG]), left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), right superior frontal gyrus (SFG), ACC, and precentral gyrus among individuals with ADHD. Conclusions The multimodal meta-analyses indicated that individuals with ADHD exhibit abnormalities in both function and structure in the bilateral OFC. In addition, a few regions exhibited only functional or only structural abnormalities in ADHD, such as in the limbic, prefrontal, primary sensorimotor regions.

Interference of default mode on attention networks in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and its association with genetic variants and treatment outcomes

Abstract:Aims: Altered brain functional connectivity has been proposed as the neurobiological underpinnings of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the default mode interference hypothesis is one of the most popular neuropsychological models. Here, we explored whether this hypothesis is supported in adults with ADHD and the association with high-risk genetic variants and treatment outcomes. Methods: Voxel-based whole-brain connectome analysis was conducted on resting-state functional MRI data from 84 adults with ADHD and 89 healthy controls to identify functional connectivity substrates corresponding to ADHD-related alterations. The candidate genetic variants and 12-week cognitive behavioral therapy data were leveraged from the same population to assess these associations. Results: We detected breakdowns of functional connectivity in the precuneus and left middle temporal gyrus in adults with ADHD, with exact contributions from decreased connectivity within the default mode, dorsal and ventral attention networks, as well as increased connectivity among them with the middle temporal gyrus serving as a crucial 'bridge'. Additionally, significant associations between the altered functional connectivity and genetic variants in both MAOA and MAOB were detected. Treatment restored brain function, with the amelioration of connectivity of the middle temporal gyrus, accompanied by improvements in ADHD core symptoms. Conclusions: These findings support the interference of default mode on attention in adults with ADHD and its association with genetic risk variants and clinical management, providing insights into the underlying pathogenesis of ADHD and potential biomarkers for treatment evaluation.

Abstract:BackgroundAttention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental condition that profoundly affects quality of life. Although mounting evidence now suggests uncontrolled mind-wandering as a core aspect of the attentional problems associated with ADHD, the neural mechanisms underpinning this deficit remains unclear. To that extent, competing views argue for (i) excessive generation of task-unrelated mental content, or (ii) deficiency in the control of task-relevant cognition.MethodsIn a cross-sectional investigation of a large neurotypical cohort (n = 184), we examined alterations in the intrinsic brain functional connectivity architecture of the default mode (DMN) and frontoparietal (FPN) networks during resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging in relation to ADHD symptomatology, which could potentially underlie changes in ongoing thought within variable environmental contexts.ResultsThe results illustrated that ADHD symptoms were linked to lower levels of detail in ongoing thought while the participants made more difficult, memory based decisions. Moreover, greater ADHD scores were associated with lower levels of connectivity between the DMN and right sensorimotor cortex, and between the FPN and right ventral visual cortex. Finally, a combination of high levels of ADHD symptomology with reduced FPN connectivity to the visual cortex was associated with reduced levels of detail in thought.ConclusionsThe results of our study suggest that the frequent mind-wandering observed in ADHD may be an indirect consequence of the deficient control of ongoing cognition in response to increasing environmental demands, and that this may partly arise from dysfunctions in the intrinsic organisation of the FPN at rest.
An exploratory study on promoting students' critical thinking by using weblogs

Abstract:Critical thinking becomes an essential competency for people in the new information age. The purpose of this research is to investigate to what extent writing online reflections using weblogs can promote students' critical thinking. This research is conducted in a secondary school. After completing 3 weblogs, a focus group interview was conducted to collect their feedback on the design and implementation of the research. The results showed that the students liked the way of writing online reflections. They attempted to make the weblogs interesting, convincing and logical. Also, they liked to view others' reflections and to give comments. This paper presents the formative evaluation processes and results of the research.

Abstract:Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children and is characterised by inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. While several studies have analysed the static functional connectivity in the resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) of ADHD patients, detailed investigations are required to characterize the connectivity dynamics in the brain. In an attempt to establish a link between attention instability and the dynamic properties of Functional Connectivity (FC), we investigated the differences in temporal variability of FC between 40 children with ADHD and 40 Typically Developing (TD) children. Using a sliding-window method to segment the rs-fMRI scans in time, we employed seed-to-voxel correlation analysis for each window to obtain time-evolving seed connectivity maps for seeds placed in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). For each subject, the standard deviation of the voxel connectivity time series was used as a measure of the temporal variability of FC. Results showed that ADHD patients exhibited significantly higher variability in dFC than TD children in the cingulo-temporal, cingulo-parietal, fronto-temporal, and fronto-parietal networks ($p_{FWE} < 0.05$). Atypical temporal variability was observed in the left and right temporal gyri, the anterior cingulate cortex, and lateral regions of the right parietal cortex. The observations are consistent with visual attention issues, executive control deficit, and rightward parietal dysfunction reported in ADHD, respectively. These results help in understanding the disorder with a fresh perspective linking behavioural inattention with instability in FC in the brain.
