Abstract:Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the practice of physical activities in the four domains (leisure time, transportation, household, and work) and the prevalence of depressive symptoms in Brazilian adults, in general and stratified by sex, schooling level, and having or not a self-reported diagnosis of depression. This is a cross-sectional study with data from 88,531 individuals aged 18 years or older, who responded to the Brazilian National Health Survey in 2019. The depressive symptoms were evaluated by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Those who practice physical activities at least once a week in a given domain were considered physically active. Additionally, the calculation of physical activities duration was conducted and later divided into quartiles for each domain. For the association analyses, the crude odds ratio (crudeOR) and adjusted odds ratio (adjustedOR) were calculated for the total and stratified analyses. Individuals who are physically active during leisure time showed a lower chance of presenting depressive symptoms, in total (adjustedOR = 0.74; 95%CI: 0.64-0.86) and in all stratifications, except for individuals with self-reported depression. The associations of leisure-time physical activity were most frequent in those who practice from 121 to 360 minutes/week. The individuals who were active in the transportation, household, and work domains had a higher chance of presenting depressive symptoms in some groups, with more consistent results for household physical activities. The results showed that the relationship between physical activities and depression among Brazilians varies according to domain and duration, and that the concept that “every move counts” seemed to be correct only for the leisure-time domain.

Abstract:We investigated the longitudinal association between physical activity (PA) and symptoms of depression and anxiety in people with depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used data from baseline (June 2020) to wave 3 (June 2021) of the PAMPA Cohort, an ambispective cohort with adults in south Brazil. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale assessed depressive and anxiety symptoms in all waves. Participants reported frequency (minutes), type (aerobic, strength, combined), and place (out of home, at home) of physical activity at baseline. Generalized linear models were used to investigate the interaction between time and PA, adjusting for possible confounding variables. Subjective memory decline was assessed using multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models to obtain adjusted hazard ratio (HR) and respective 95% confidence interval (CI). Participants (n=424) with self-reported clinically diagnosed depression were included. We observed a non-linear increase trajectory of depression during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. PA was associated with a slower trajectory of depressive (slope: -1.89; 95%CI: -3.34, -0.43 points) but not anxiety (slope: -1.33; 95%CI: -2.93, 0.25 points) symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants who continued physically active from pre-pandemic in wave 1 showed a lower risk of subjective memory decline during follow-up than those who persisted inactive in the same period (HR: 0.52; 95%CI: 0.30, 0.89). PA attenuated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on depressive symptoms in adults living with depression in south Brazil. Regularity of physical activity was associated with fewer depression and anxiety symptoms and a lower risk of subjective memory decline.

Abstract:The number of depression sufferers is rising globally. In the United States, 8% of adults over 20 years of age suffer from it, making it the most prevalent mental disorder in the country. Some lifestyle habits have been shown to favor or prevent the onset of depression; for instance, physical inactivity is associated with an increased likelihood of suffering depression, whilst multiple benefits have been attributed to performing physical activity (PA). This study aims to test whether there is a dependence between the prevalence of depression and PA, age, gender and educational level. The secondary objective was to identify the differentiating variables for depression and non-depression. This cross-sectional study is based on data from the NHANES 2013–2014, 2015–2016 and 2017–2018 editions. Some of the items in this survey were taken from preexisting questionnaires: the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depression screening and the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) for the PA groups. The final sample was formed of 15,574 United States residents over 18 years old. After testing the data normality (p < 0.001), a descriptive analysis and the non-parametric chi-square test was conducted, as well as discriminant analysis. The results showed that there was an association between depression prevalence and PA (p < 0.001) in the general population and for both genders. Inactive participants had the highest prevalence of major depression and other depressive disorders. The discriminant analysis identified PA group (0.527), education level (0.761) and gender (−0.505) as significant variables that differentiate between participants with and without depression. The results of this research confirmed that a dependency relationship between PA group according to the GPAQ and depression prevalence according to the PHQ-9 existed in the United States adult population, and that PA group is a relevant variable to differentiate between depression sufferers and non-sufferers.

Abstract:Objective: This study investigated the associations of occupational physical activity and active transport with depressive symptoms, stratified by income range, among Brazilian working adults. Study design: This cross-sectional study drew on data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. Methods: We used the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to assess depressive symptoms in working adults aged 18-65 years, with physical activities (occupational physical activity and active transport) self-reported through a specially developed questionnaire. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were fitted. Results: Individuals at the highest level of occupational physical activity (odds ratio [OR] 1.35; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.19-1.53) and at the moderate level of active transport to work (OR 1.66; 95% CI 1.24-2.22) returned increased odds of depressive symptoms as compared with those who were inactive in these domains. Stratified by income group, light active transport to work (OR 0.57; 95% CI 0.34-0.95) in the lower income group (Range 1) was associated with lower odds of depressive symptoms. On the other hand, individuals at the highest level of active transport to work returned higher odds of depressive symptoms in the low- and intermediate-income groups, Ranges 3 and 4 (OR 1.92; 95% CI 1.22-3.00 and OR 2.91; 95% CI 1.71-4.95, respectively). Conclusion: Our results suggest that occupational physical activity and active transport may be a risk factor for depressive symptoms. They also point to differences in this relationship by income range. Further studies are needed to pursue the analysis of how specific domains of physical activity contribute to depressive symptoms.
Physical Activity Participation Decreases the Risk of Depression in Older Adults: The ATHLOS Population-Based Cohort Study

Abstract:Abstract Background To which extent physical activity is associated with depression independent of older adults’ physical and cognitive functioning is largely unknown. This cohort study using harmonised data by the EU Ageing Trajectories of Health: Longitudinal Opportunities and Synergies consortium, including over 20 countries, to evaluate the longitudinal association of physical activity (light-to-moderate or vigorous intensity) with depression in older adults (aged ≥ 50 years). Results We evaluated 56,818 participants (light-to-moderate models; 52.7% females, age 50–102 years) and 62,656 participants (vigorous models; 52.7% females, age 50–105 years). Compared to never, light-to-moderate or vigorous physical activity was associated with a lower incidence rate ratio (IRR) of depression (light-to-moderate model: once/week: 0.632, 95% CI 0.602–0.663; twice or more/week: 0.488, 95% CI 0.468–0.510; vigorous model: once/week: 0.652, 95% CI 0.623–0.683; twice or more/week: 0.591, 95% CI 0.566–0.616). Physical activity remained associated with depression after adjustment for the healthy ageing scale, which is a scale that incorporated 41 items of physical and cognitive functioning (light-to-moderate model: once/week: 0.787, 95% CI 0.752–0.824; twice or more/week: 0.711, 95% CI 0.682–0.742; vigorous model: once/week: 0.828, 95% CI 0.792–0.866; twice or more/week: 0.820, 95% CI 0.786–0.856). Conclusions Physical activity, of any intensity and weekly frequency, was a strong protective factor against depression, independent of physical and mental functioning. Health policies could stimulate the incorporation of lower physical activity intensity to protect against depression, which might be more feasible at the population level.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To verify the association between physical activity (PA) and mental health among health professionals in southern Brazil. Methods Cross-sectional study with 101 workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health and PA were assessed using the questionnaires. The association of PA with stress was tested by linear regression, and anxiety and depressive symptoms by Poisson regression. Results The stress was inversely associated with individuals who performed some PA (β:-3.53;95% CI:-6.63;-0.44) and who met the PA recommendations (active) (β:-6.84;95% CI:-12.44;-1.24). Workers who performed some PA (PR:0.76;95% CI:0.67;0.86) and were active (PR:0.75;95% CI:0.60;0.93) were less likely to have severe symptoms of anxiety. For depression, workers who performed some PA (PR:0.81;95% CI:0.71;0.92) and were active (PR:0.69;95% CI:0.54;0.88), the probability was also smaller. Conclusions The practice of PA was inversely associated with symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety.

Methods: We included and analyzed 31,221 participants (aged ≥18 years) from the cross-sectional 2007-2018 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The PA domains were assessed by a self-report questionnaire and categorized based on the PA guidelines. Depressive symptoms were measured by the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire. Results: Participants achieving PA guidelines (≥150 min/week) were 26% (odds ratio [OR] 0.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.68-0.80) and 43% (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.51-0.62) less likely to have depressive symptoms depending on total PA and LTPA, respectively, while OPA or TPA did not demonstrate lower risks of depressive symptoms. LTPA at levels of 1-149, 150-299, and ≥300 min/week was associated with 31% (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.60-0.78), 43% (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.49-0.67), and 51% (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.43-0.55) lower odds of depressive symptoms, respectively. Conclusion: LTPA, but not OPA or TPA, was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms at any amount, suggesting that significant mental health would benefit from increased PA, even at levels below the recommendation.

Abstract:Physical activity has been recommended to general population for preventing depressive symptoms. However, only few prospective studies focused on the association between the domain-specific physical activity levels and risk of depressive symptoms. PURPOSE: To investigate the prospective association between domain-specific physical activity and depressive symptoms among Japanese older people. METHODS: In this study, participants comprised 365 (169 men) community-dwelling older individuals aged ≥70 years, who were living in the Tsurugaya area of Sendai, Japan. These participants did not have depressive symptoms at baseline. Depressive state was evaluated by a short version of Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), and a GDS-15 score ≥6 was defined as depressive symptoms. Furthermore, a valid questionnaire was used to assess domain-specific physical activity. Leisure-time physical activity levels by estimating metabolic equivalents (METs) hours/day based on frequency and duration of walking, brisk walking, moderate exercise, and strenuous exercise. METs of physical activity in other domains (occupational, domestic, commuting) were calculated based on the numbers of hours spent at different levels of intensity (sitting, standing, walking, strenuous work). Associations between physical activity and depressive symptoms were examined by multiple regression analysis. Covariates included sex, age, body mass index, educational levels, living status, smoking status, drinking status, sleep duration, and cognitive function. Data were expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed that tertiles of leisure-time physical activity were inversely associated with depressive symptoms during 10-years follow-up period (OR [95% CI]: T2, 0.97 [0.54−1.76]; T3, 0.42 [0.21−0.85]; P for trend = 0.019). Similarly, high levels of physical activity in other domains were also associated with decreased incidence of depressive symptoms (OR [95% CI]: T2, 0.73 [0.40−1.36]; T3, 0.52 [0.27−0.99]; P for trend = 0.045). CONCLUSION: This long-term prospective study demonstrated that the both leisure-time and non-leisure-time (occupational, domestic, commuting) physical activity may be preventive factors for depressive symptoms in older adults.

Abstract:Aim: This study aimed to investigate the association between physical activity (PA), lifestyle, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out using an online questionnaire. PA (International Physical Activity Questionnaire), lifestyle (Short Multidimensional Inventory Lifestyle Evaluation), and mental health (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21) were assessed. Mean scores were compared between groups of physically active and inactive participants, controlling for gender, education, and income. Furthermore, associations were made between the variables, and individual network analyses were carried out for each mental health domain. The sample consisted of 353 individuals (age = 33.8 [12.2], 59.2% women). Results: In network analyses, PA was indirectly related to depression and stress through the relationship with other lifestyle domains such as diet and nutrition or through stress management and social support. The same path was observed for anxiety; however, a direct partial correlation was also observed between PA and anxiety, suggesting that PA seems to intervene more directly in this aspect of mental health. Conclusion: It is concluded that PA is indirectly (via stress management, diet and nutrition, and social support) associated with depression and stress and has direct and indirect associations (via stress management and social support) with anxiety.

Reduced level of physical activity during COVID-19 pandemic is associated with depression and anxiety levels: an internet-based survey

Abstract:Abstract Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in a strong negative impact on economic and social life worldwide. It has also negatively influenced people’s general health and quality of life . The aim of the present study was to study the impact of social distancing on physical activity level, and the association between mood state (depression and anxiety level) or sex with actual physical activity levels, the change in physical activity caused by social distancing period, the adhesion level to social distancing, the adoption time of social distancing, family income and age. Methods A self-administered questionnaire with personal, quarantine, physical activity, and mood state disorders information’s was answered by 2140 Brazilians of both sex who were recruited through online advertising. Results The physical activity level adopted during the period of social distancing (2.9 ± 1.1) was lower than that adopted prior to the pandemic period (3.5 ± 0.8, p < 0.001). Thirty percent of the participants presented symptoms of moderate/severe depression and 23.3% displayed moderate/severe anxiety symptoms. A greater presence of symptoms related to anxiety and depression were associated with low physical activity levels, low family monthly income, and younger age. A higher percentage of men who had no mood disorders was observed among those who were very active than among those less active. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has a negative impact on physical activity. Those who reduced their level of physical activity had the highest levels of mood disorders. Therefore, physical activity programs should be encouraged, while respecting the necessary social distancing to prevent the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the independent and joint associations of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour with depressive symptoms. A population-based cross-sectional study conducted in China included 17,861 adults. PA and sedentary behaviour were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Depressive symptoms were determined by the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire score ≥10. Logistic regression models were used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The prevalence of depressive symptoms among all participants was 20.6% (3679/17861). Higher levels of PA were inversely associated with depressive symptoms, whereas prolonged sedentary behaviour was associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms. The positive associations between sedentary behaviour and depressive symptoms remained significant, regardless of PA levels. In joint analyses, the depressive symptoms OR comparing adults who reported low level of PA with the highest tertile of sedentary behaviour to those reporting high level of PA with the lowest tertile of sedentary behaviour was 1.99 (95% CI 1.64 to 2.40). This study indicated that high level of PA may not offset the increased risk of depressive symptoms associated with high amounts of sedentary behaviour, and therefore these behaviours should be considered jointly to obtain optimal prevention effects.

Abstract:Objectives: This study investigates the mediating role of moderate physical activity (MPA), vigorous physical activity (VPA), and self-rated health (SRH) in the association between depression and quality of life (QoL) in a large sample of Europeans aged 50 and over, differentiated by sex. Methods: Data from the 2017 Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were analyzed, including 11,986 individuals (6843 women) aged 50 and older. All information was collected through face-to-face interviews: sociodemographic data, SRH, physical activity levels, depression (EURO-D scale), and QoL (CASP-12). Results: Comparatively, women reported a higher prevalence of depression, a lower perception of QoL, and slightly lower levels of SRH, MPA, and VPA. Parallel mediation models revealed, for both sexes, that an increase in VPA levels was more effective in benefiting SRH; and MPA proved to be a better promoter of QoL. When comparing sexes, only the path depression → VPA → QoL showed a significant difference (p < 0.001). Conclusions: These results provide valuable insights for developing physical activity interventions capable of improving mental health and promoting QoL in older European adults.

Abstract:Perceptual and Motor Skills, Ahead of Print. We investigated whether mood and lifestyle-related indicators of physical health are differentially expressed according to self-reported levels of depressive symptoms among young adults with a current episode of major depression. In a cross-sectional study, we recruited 94 young adults (females = 67, 71.3%; males = 27, 28.7%; aged 18–35 years) with a current episode of major depression. We assessed their mood with the Profile of Mood States (POMS), and Beck Anxiety Inventory-(BAI), sleep with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), physical activity with the Simple Physical Activity Questionnaire (SIMPAQ), and their cardiorespiratory fitness. Participants' depression levels were classified as follows using established cut-points: (a) Mild Depressive Symptoms (MIDS, BDI-II 14-19 points, n = 17), (b) Moderate Depressive Symptoms (MODS, BDI-II 20–28 points, n = 37) or (c) Severe Depressive Symptoms (SEDS, BDI-II 29–63 points, n = 40). As expected, we found that young adults with SEDS, when compared to those with MODS and MIDS, showed higher depressive mood on the POMS, and they exhibited greater anxiety symptoms, lower reported 'vigor' on physical activity measures, worse sleep quality as expressed by their global score sleep; daytime dysfunction; and sleep disturbance, and they showed lower cardiorespiratory fitness. Those with moderate depressive symptoms only differed from those with mild symptoms with respect to hostility, fatigue and mood disturbance. Although there was a gradient whereby worse mental and physical health indicators were more closely related to the SEDS depression categorization, while healthier indicators were associated with the MIDS category, some parameters were not different between the MDD severity groups, particularly when comparing MIDS and MODS. Clinicians treating patients with MDD should consider these factors when designing lifestyle-based interventions.

Abstract:Abstract The worldwide increase in life expectancy has resulted in a significant aging of the population. The physiological and functional changes that result from the aging process, changes in sleep patterns, and the prevalence of chronic diseases affect the health and well-being of individuals aged over 60. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between levels of physical activity (PA) and sleep quality in community-dwelling older adults. Methods This is a cross-sectional study, with the participants randomly recruited according to the region and street in which they live. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied to assess sleep quality, the Modified Baecke Questionnaire for the Elderly (MBQ-E) to assess PA levels, as well as questionnaires to obtain social, demographic and anthropometric data. Multivariable regression analyses were conducted with PA activity as the independent variable and sleep quality as the dependent variable of interest, while also considering all potential covariates. Results A total of 503 older adults were analyzed, of whom 377 (75%) were classified as inactive and only 126 (25%) as active. Among the participants, 344 (68.4%) had poor sleep quality, 86 (17.1%) had symptoms of insomnia, and 57 (11.5%) reported complaints of excessive daytime sleepiness. We found that 128 participants (25.4%) consumed alcohol and 41 (8.2%) were current smokers. Multivariate regression results showed an inverse association between PA levels and sleep (Beta coefficient = −0.67 ([95% confidence interval = −1.29 to −0.04]). Conclusions The results of the study indicate that being physically inactive is associated with poor sleep quality.

Abstract:Objectives: The primary aim of this study is to assess the relationship between different aspects of physical activity (PA) and dementia occurrence in older adults from Brazil. Methods: It is a secondary analysis of the first wave data derived from the ELSI-Brazil study, a longitudinal study of aging in Brazil with a representative sample of Brazilians aged 50 years and older (n = 9,412). We employed two distinct approaches to assess PA. First, participants' levels of PA were classified in low, moderate and high based on their reported physical exertion over the preceding seven days at the time of interview. Also, PA was classified as sufficient or not sufficient, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation. Dementia was defined as those who were 60 years and older, had a cognitive performance ≤1.5 z-score compared to a sub- sample defined as control-group, and also had an impairment in instrumental activity of daily living. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between physical activity and dementia (crude and adjusted for age, gender, schooling, marital status, smoking and alcoholconsumption). Results: After excluding those younger than 60 years old and had missing data to any of the variables analyzed, our sample was composed by 4,994 individuals (table 1), with a mean age of 69.7 (SD = 7 .5), 4.7 years of schooling (SD = 4.3) and 214 (4.1%) classified as living with dementia. We also found that higher levels of PA were associated with lower occurrences of dementia (table 2) (moderate OR 0.57 95% CI 0.37 –0 .90, p < 0.05; high OR 0.32 95% CI 0.19 –0.56, p < 0.001). Also, practicing the level of PA recommended by WHO had an inverse association with dementia (table 3) (OR 0.49 95% CI 0.30 – 0.79, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The main limitation of our study is its cross-sectional nature. Therefore, we cannot determine the direction of relationships between variables. Our findings show a significant inverse association between levels of PA and dementia occurrence. Additionally, adherence to the WHO's recommendation for PA also showed a significant inverse association with dementia occurrence. These results underscore the importance of promoting regular physical activity as a potential preventive measure against dementia among older Brazilian adults.

Association Between Physical Activity and Risk of Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract:Importance: Depression is the leading cause of mental health-related disease burden and may be reduced by physical activity, but the dose-response relationship between activity and depression is uncertain. Objective: To systematically review and meta-analyze the dose-response association between physical activity and incident depression from published prospective studies of adults. Data sources: PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and the reference lists of systematic reviews retrieved by a systematic search up to December 11, 2020, with no language limits. The date of the search was November 12, 2020. Study selection: We included prospective cohort studies reporting physical activity at 3 or more exposure levels and risk estimates for depression with 3000 or more adults and 3 years or longer of follow-up. Data extraction and synthesis: Data extraction was completed independently by 2 extractors and cross-checked for errors. A 2-stage random-effects dose-response meta-analysis was used to synthesize data. Study-specific associations were estimated using generalized least-squares regression and the pooled association was estimated by combining the study-specific coefficients using restricted maximum likelihood. Main outcomes and measures: The outcome of interest was depression, including (1) presence of major depressive disorder indicated by self-report of physician diagnosis, registry data, or diagnostic interviews and (2) elevated depressive symptoms established using validated cutoffs for a depressive screening instrument. Results: Fifteen studies comprising 191 130 participants and 2 110 588 person-years were included. An inverse curvilinear dose-response association between physical activity and depression was observed, with steeper association gradients at lower activity volumes; heterogeneity was large and significant (I2 = 74%; P < .001). Relative to adults not reporting any activity, those accumulating half the recommended volume of physical activity (4.4 marginal metabolic equivalent task hours per week [mMET-h/wk]) had 18% (95% CI, 13%-23%) lower risk of depression. Adults accumulating the recommended volume of 8.8 mMET hours per week had 25% (95% CI, 18%-32%) lower risk with diminishing potential benefits and higher uncertainty observed beyond that exposure level. There were diminishing additional potential benefits and greater uncertainty at higher volumes of physical activity. Based on an estimate of exposure prevalences among included cohorts, if less active adults had achieved the current physical activity recommendations, 11.5% (95% CI, 7.7%-15.4%) of depression cases could have been prevented. Conclusions and relevance: This systematic review and meta-analysis of associations between physical activity and depression suggests significant mental health benefits from being physically active, even at levels below the public health recommendations. Health practitioners should therefore encourage any increase in physical activity to improve mental health.

Abstract:Background: Regular physical activity (PA) offers numerous benefits, decreasing all-cause mortality (ACM) among the general population. However, its impact on individuals with depression remains unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between various PA levels and ACM among adult patients with depression in the United States. Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2018, as well as relevant mortality data up to December 31, 2018 were extracted. 4850 adults with depression were incorporated into this cohort study. PA level was quantified based on weekly metabolic equivalent of task (MET-min/week) and categorized into four groups according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Weighted Cox proportional-hazards models were leveraged to assess the association of different PA levels with ACM among adults with depression, and adjustments were made for various sociodemographic and health factors. Results: Among the 4850 patients with depression, 503 deaths were noted over a median follow-up of 6.6 years. The weighted Cox regression analysis showed that participants with high-level PA (>1200 MET-min/week) had a markedly lower risk of ACM (HR = 0.48, 95 % CI 0.33 to 0.68) compared to those with no PA (0 MET-min/week). The benefit conferred by the high-level PA group (HR = 0.65, 95CI 0.45 to 0.94) remained significant (p < 0.05) after adjustment for other confounders. Limitations: PA and some covariates were assessed through self-reported questionnaires. Conclusion: High-level PA has the most pronounced effect on reducing ACM among adult patients with depression, which should be recognized in clinical and public health guidelines.

Abstract:The present study investigates whether dissatisfaction with body image, obesity and central obesity are independently associated with physical activity (PA) and if such association differ among men and women. 13,286 participants of ELSA‐Brasil cohort, aged‐35‐65 years. PA assessed by IPAQ and categorized as low, moderate and intense. Nutritional status assessed by body mass index and waist to height ratio. Body image dissatisfaction was defined by the difference between self‐reported body image and ideal body image using a validated silhouette scale. Multinomial logistic regression used to investigate whether body image dissatisfaction, obesity and central obesity are independently associated with PA, after controlling for age, schooling, income and common mental disorder. Prevalence of moderate and intense PA was lower among women than men. Prevalence of body image dissatisfaction was present even among normal weight individuals of both sexes. Body image dissatisfaction was associated with less moderate PA in women and with intense PA in men. Overweight and obese men had higher chances of high intensity PA. Obese women had lower OR of engaging in intense PA. Body image as well as nutritional status is related to PA practice in both sexes, but the association differs according to PA intensity.

Abstract:BackgroundPhysical activity in adolescents is associated with short- and long-term health benefits. Physical activity can occur in various domains and is influenced by a complex network of factors. The aims of this study are 1) to describe the physical activity of Brazilian adolescents in physical education classes, during leisure time, and during active commuting and 2) to investigate the socio-demographic and behavioral factors associated with physical activity.MethodsThe representative sample included 109,104 Brazilian students in the final year of elementary school from 2,842 schools. The weekly frequency and duration of physical activity were assessed. A variety of socio-demographic and behavioral factors were studied. A multiple Poisson regression analysis was used to test for associations between physical activity and the socio-demographic and behavioral variables.ResultsMost of the students (97.0%) engaged in physical activity in at least one of the domains studied, especially physical education at school (81.7%) and leisure time physical activity (67.5%). However, only 29% of the adolescents reached the recommended level of physical activity. Among the adolescents who reached the minimum recommended time for physical activity, the various domains contributed the following proportions to total physical activity: leisure time physical activity (PR 12.5; 95% CI 11.17-13.97), active commuting (PR 1.63; 95% CI 1.59-1.67), and physical education at school (PR 1.36; 95% CI 1.29-1.44). The weekly frequency of all activities was greater among boys than among girls. Moreover, nearly two-thirds (61.8%) of students spent more than two hours per day engaging in sedentary behaviors; the prevalence of sedentary behaviors was similar between boys and girls (59.0 and 64.5%, respectively).Total level of physical activity, leisure time physical activity, and active commuting were associated with higher nutritional scores.ConclusionsPhysical activity is important in any health promotion program. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in policies and interagency initiatives that promote all domains and to ensure that the general population helps determine the scope and design of such policies.
