Abstract:Background/Objectives: There is potential utility and increasing interest in engaging professionals in non-traditional vaccination settings to participate in efforts to reduce human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancer. This study assessed the impact of a multi-disciplinary HPV educational intervention on oral health care professionals' perceived role, comfort level, and scope of practice in HPV-related cancer prevention efforts. Methods: The virtual educational intervention was provided by a multi-disciplinary panel of experts. Seventy-three oral health care professionals attended the educational intervention and completed a questionnaire at three time points (pre-session, immediate post-session, and at the 1-month follow-up). Data were analyzed using Friedman's ANOVA and post-hoc analyses. Results: Respondent's median belief that it is the role of an oral health professional to recommend the HPV vaccine increased from pre-session (Median = 3.0, IQR = 3.0–4.0) to immediate post-session (median = 4.5, IQR = 4.0–5.0), and this increase was maintained 1 month after the session (median = 4.0, IQR = 4.0–4.5; p < 0.001). Additionally, respondent's belief that they were up-to-date on the latest guidelines for HPV vaccination also increased from pre-session to immediate post-session (p < 0.05), and this increase was maintained 1 month after the session (pre-session median = 2.0, IQR = 2.0–3.0 vs. 1-month post-session median = 4.0, IQR = 4.0–5.0; p < 0.005). Conclusions: The multi-disciplinary HPV educational intervention was well-received by oral health professionals. Data suggest the intervention had a lasting impact on their beliefs about their role, comfort level, and scope of practice relating to HPV cancer prevention. More research needs to be conducted to better understand how obstetrician-gynecologists, other obstetric care providers, and oral health communities can support each other in promoting HPV-related cancer prevention.

Abstract:Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and related cancers are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Routine vaccination against HPV is recommended for patients starting at age 9-12 years. Discussing this vaccine with parents of young children can be challenging for clinicians. Barriers include parental beliefs, strength and quality of clinician recommendations, physician knowledge of HPV disease and vaccines, and provider comfort levels with discussing sexuality. Methods: Our interactive workshop began with a predidactic role-play session addressing common concerns about the HPV vaccine where participants took turns playing a concerned parent or provider. We then gave a 30-minute didactic lecture and conducted a postdidactic role-play session to practice communication skills in promoting the HPV vaccine. All participants completed pre- and postintervention knowledge and skill self-assessments. Results: Twenty-eight pediatric residents and medical students participated. We observed significant improvement in their ability to appropriately recommend the HPV vaccine in the postdidactic role-play (all ps < .02). Learner knowledge improved from pre- to postintervention (from 34% to 100%, p < .0025, based on average score), as did self-perceived comfort and confidence levels (from 3.6 to 4.3, p < .0001, average score based on a 5-point Likert scale). Discussion: An interactive workshop utilizing role-play supplemented by a didactic lecture was effective in improving participants' knowledge, communication skills, comfort levels, and confidence levels regarding HPV disease and vaccines. The workshop offers a practical and interpersonal approach to improving learners' skills in discussing the HPV vaccine with parents.
Providers’ Perceptions of Parental Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Hesitancy: Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine hesitancy among parents contributes to low vaccination coverage in adolescents. To improve health care provider communication and vaccine recommendation practices with hesitant parents, it is important to understand how providers perceive parental HPV vaccine hesitancy.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize perceived reasons for parental HPV vaccine hesitancy and identify factors associated with perceived parental hesitancy among providers at community-based pediatric clinics.METHODS: In 2018, providers in 23 community-based pediatric clinics in Tennessee were invited to complete a Web-based baseline survey as part of a larger quality improvement study focused on HPV vaccine uptake. These survey data were used for a cross-sectional, secondary data analysis. Scale scores ranging from 0 to 100 were calculated for provider self-efficacy (confidence in ability to recommend HPV vaccine), provider outcome expectations (expectations that recommendation will influence parents' decisions), and perceived parental HPV vaccine hesitancy. Provider confidence in HPV vaccine safety and effectiveness were categorized as high versus low. Clinic-level exposures examined were clinic size and rural-urban location. Descriptive analyses were used to characterize perceived parental barriers by provider type. Mixed-effects linear regression models were fit taking one exposure variable at a time, whereas controlling for provider type, age, gender, and race to identify provider- and clinic-level factors associated with perceived parental barriers to HPV vaccination.RESULTS: Of the 187 providers located in the 23 clinics, 137 completed the survey. The majority of physician providers were white and female, with a higher percentage of females among nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs). The most common parental barriers to HPV vaccination perceived by providers were concerns about HPV vaccine safety (88%), child being too young (78%), low risk of HPV infection for child through sexual activity (70%), and mistrust in vaccines (59%). In adjusted mixed models, perceived parental HPV vaccine hesitancy was significantly associated with several provider-level factors: self-efficacy (P=.001), outcome expectations (P<.001), and confidence in HPV vaccine safety (P=.009). No significant associations were observed between perceived parental HPV vaccine hesitancy and clinic-level factors clinic size nor location.CONCLUSIONS: Researchers developing provider-focused interventions to reduce parental HPV vaccine hesitancy should consider addressing providers' self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and confidence in HPV vaccine safety to help providers communicate more effectively with HPV vaccine hesitant parents.
Knowledge matters and empowers: HPV vaccine advocacy among HPV-related cancer survivors

Abstract:Purpose To describe knowledge about human papillomavirus (HPV), HPV-related care behavior, and advocacy intent (e.g., vaccine recommendation and willingness to become an advocate for vaccination) and to investigate associations between knowledge, HPV-related care behavior, and advocacy intent among HPV-related cancer survivors. Methods A cross-sectional online survey was offered through Qualtrics to HPV-related cancer survivors who were either volunteers at a cancer center or patients of survivorship clinics. Results A total of 200 survivors responded. Only 33.2% of respondents reported knowing their cancer was HPV-related and 56.8% reported HPV vaccine is safe. Participants who knew that their cancer was caused by HPV were more likely to have vaccinated their children ( p < .001). Also, participants who knew that the vaccine is safe were more willing to recommend the vaccine ( p < .001), to be a peer mentor for others with HPV-related cancers (43.2% vs. 14.0%, p < .001), and to act as an advocate for increasing vaccination rates (44.1% vs. 24.4%, p = 0.01). Finally, survivors who were aware of the vaccine’s effectiveness in decreasing precancerous lesions were more likely to recommend the vaccine (45.7% vs. 12.0%, p = .002). Conclusions Raising survivor awareness of the link between HPV and cancer and HPV vaccine safety may increase their willingness to serve as powerful opinion leaders and peer mentors to promote HPV vaccination. Providers may take the simple step of informing patients that their cancer is HPV-related and HPV vaccine is safe to increase the number of informed and empowered survivors.
"That Was an Eye Opener for Me": Mixed-Methods Outcomes Educating Texas Community Health Workers on HPV Vaccination Using Project ECHO®

Abstract:Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known to cause six different types of cancer. HPV vaccination can prevent over 90% of these cancers. Community health workers (CHWs) have the potential to drive HPV vaccination demand through education and navigation by addressing vaccine hesitancy and dis/misinformation and by reaching non-English speaking, vulnerable, or rural populations. Despite their possible reach, there is limited research on HPV vaccination education programs for CHWs. In 2020–2021, the American Cancer Society (ACS) HPV Cancer Free Texas (HPVCFT) Project implemented the eight-session Mission: HPVCFT Vaccination ECHO–CHW Program ten times. This manuscript details the program's implementation processes and outcomes. The program used the Project ECHO model and was offered in both English and Spanish. One hundred and forty-six Texan CHWs completed pre- and post-training surveys. The participants demonstrated significant HPV vaccination knowledge increases and desirable shifts in their foundational HPV vaccination beliefs, including the belief that the HPV vaccine is for cancer prevention. The participants also reported increased confidence in communicating about the HPV vaccine in the community. Improving knowledge, beliefs, and confidence in HPV vaccination is the first step in addressing concerns and increasing uptake. Future research and interventions are needed to better understand how CHWs can be more systematically linked to vaccination opportunities or provided with clearer paths for directing patients to providers that vaccinate.

Abstract:Abstract Improving human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is a national priority but uptake declined following the coronavirus pandemic. A strong predictor of HPV vaccination in the USA is a strong provider recommendation. Therefore, we developed a brief, asynchronous training on HPV vaccine recommendations in clinical and community settings as part of a multisite quality improvement initiative. This paper aims to describe the implementation and initial outcomes of the training provided. A 20-minute training on HPV vaccine bundled recommendations, motivational interviewing, and brief responses to patient concerns (Communicating about HPV vaccination to Adults and Teens; HPV CHAT) was implemented at seven safety-net clinics, two practice-based research network clinics, and nine county immunization clinics. We integrated training with clinical care teams; thus, we assessed immediate training outcomes across their different clinical roles compared to pre-training. In April–May 2022, HPV CHAT training was launched. One hundred eighty-seven people participated in the training and completed the pre-/postevaluation surveys. Knowledge about the HPV vaccine guidelines improved with notable changes in correctly reporting vaccine eligibility (P < .05). A significant change in participants’ confidence when addressing safety concerns and answering questions about the HPV vaccine (clinicians, 26.8% and 17.1%; nurses, 29.0% and 23.2%, and clinical staff, 18.2% and 37.7%) was observed. At post-test, more than 85% of clinicians and nurses reported their plan to routinely recommend the HPV vaccine. This quality improvement initiative demonstrated implementation feasibility of a brief HPV vaccine training that improved provider and clinical staff knowledge, confidence, and intention to routinely recommend HPV vaccination.

Abstract:Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is an underutilized tool in cancer prevention. HPV vaccine completion rates in adolescents age 13 to 15 years remain low at 59%. The HPV vaccine can prevent more than 90% of cases of cancer caused by HPV, including cervical, oropharyngeal, anal, penile, vulvar, and vaginal. HPV vaccine is very safe and effective, as demonstrated by numerous large-scale studies. Practice-based strategies can improve vaccination rates, such as having providers give a strong presumptive recommendation for the vaccine, using motivational interviewing for hesitant families, and using electronic health record reminders to prompt providers to offer it, among other interventions. Offering HPV vaccine starting at age 9 years is another evidence-based strategy to improve HPV vaccine completion rates, which has been shown to be acceptable to both providers and parents. Abstract:Background: Although many interventions to address vaccine hesitancy until now have operated on the presumption that misperceptions are due to a lack of knowledge about HPV and the vaccine, this may not always be the reason behind vaccine hesitancy. Nyhan et. al found [1] that correcting myths about vaccines- such as autism links or vaccine side effects- do not increase vaccine rates among adolescents. Medical providers play a crucial role on influencing parents’ decision to vaccinate. In a study exploring how vaccination coverage among children 19-35 months old is associated with health care providers' influence on the parents' decision to vaccinate, parents who report their providers as being influential in the study are twice as likely to respond that vaccines are safe for children [2]. In the 2016 Clinical Report on Countering Vaccine Hesitancy by the American Academy of Pediatrics, motivational interviewing is listed as a potential communication technique that may be useful as pediatricians discuss vaccines with vaccine-hesitant parents. Research Question: The research attempting to find the best approaches to reverse the increasing rates of unvaccinated minors is limited and inconclusive. This project addressed the impact of medical providers’ attitudes of HPV vaccination on their early adolescent patient populations. Methods: Our cohort prospective study first examined medical providers’ baseline attitudes and approaches of HPV vaccination in privately insured clinics in rural areas of Nebraska. A survey was sent to eleven Phase III patient centered medical home (PCMH) NE clinics. The survey assessed medical staffs’ attitudes and approaches to HPV vaccination, particularly among specific patient age groups. In addition to each clinic’s collective survey responses, baseline HPV vaccination data was collected at eleven Phase 3 PCMH rural clinics in Nebraska for pediatric patients 11-15-years-old. The follow-up intervention implemented educational interventions in the clinics to increase HPV vaccination rates for pediatric patients 9-15-years-old. Our educational outreach program at the selected 10-13 clinics will serve as these rural clinics’ first efforts to selectively work toward improving HPV vaccination rates. Results: America’s Health Rankings (2017) found 42.4% of adolescents living in rural areas compared to 52.4% in urban areas are up-to-date on their HPV immunizations. The eleven rural clinics selected for the study show only a 0.9% completion of the vaccine series for 9-11-year-old patients (n=855), and 25.0% completion of the series for 12-15-year-old patients (n=1268) as of 2019. This implies a pressing health disparity that needs addressing in rural Nebraskan communities. 92.6% of all respondents chose the 12-15 age range as the patient population the clinics would typically ask about the vaccine versus 59.6% who chose the 9-11 age range. The most chosen reason for not mentioning the HPV vaccine is “parents previously voiced vaccine hesitancy” (33.3%) followed by “not enough clinic time” (22.2%). The most popular reason contributing to parental hesitancy is “they have concerns the vaccine is not safe for their child” (70.4%). The greatest benefit of the HPV vaccine was listed as “prevention from multiple forms of cancer” (33.3%) and the greatest drawbacks were both “multiple dose series completion” (40.7%) and “difficulty in convincing parents to vaccinate minors” (40.7%). The 9-11 age range was chosen as the most difficult age group to vaccinate (33.3%). The most difficult scenarios when addressing HPV vaccination concerns were “lack of vaccine education” (55.6%), “religious reasons against the vaccine (44.4%), and “language/cultural barriers” (37%). Qualitative results were also analyzed separately and focused on each individual clinic’s strengths and weaknesses regarding vaccination encouragement. Discussion: The baseline patient data show that clinics selected for the study exhibit a large disparity of HPV vaccination rates among a vulnerable age group. Survey responses show both a clinical observation regarding parents’ low-level education levels about the HPV vaccine as well as a lack of comfort engaging in open dialogue between patients and healthcare personnel. Focusing on these two variables alone could help increase rates of vaccination significantly. Survey results ultimately illustrate the urgent need for empirically-supported educational resources that will enhance communication- both within individual clinics among staff as well as between medical staff and patients’ families- to sustainably increase HPV vaccination rates across rural clinics.
Gender comparisons of perceived benefits of and barriers to physical activity in middle school youth.

Abstract:Perceived benefits of and barriers to physical activity (PA) reported by 206 middle school boys and girls in a survey were compared. Only "take care of myself, stay in shape, and be healthier" emerged as a greater benefit for girls than boys. Among students not on a sports team, boys reported fewer barriers than girls. Among those selecting an active pursuit, boys perceived more barriers than girls. When controlling for sports team participation and perceived benefits and barriers, boys reported more minutes of vigorous PA than girls. As boys and girls reported relatively similar benefits of and barriers to PA, nurse counseling with both groups can focus on the same information. Effort is particularly needed to increase PA among girls.

Abstract:The risks of secondary cancers associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection are as much as three times higher for survivors of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancer (PYAC) compared to the general population. Despite this, HPV vaccination rates among PYAC survivors remain low. Whereas pediatric oncology providers endorse HPV vaccination of PYAC survivors, many lack the resources or opportunities to intervene. The responsibility of HPV vaccination, therefore, falls to primary care providers and practices. This article provides an overview of the challenges with HPV vaccination that are distinct to PYAC survivors and discusses potential strategies to increase HPV vaccine coverage in this population.

[Selective activation of adrenaline secretion by the rat adrenal in neuroglycopenia detected via microdialysis].

Abstract:Secretion of adrenaline (A) and noradrenaline (NA) was measured in conscious Wistar rats using the microdialysis probe implanted into the adrenal gland. Changes in contents of A and NA in plasma as well as in dialysate samples in response to i. v. administration of 500 mg/kg 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) were measured by HPLC with electrochemical detection. 2-DG-induced neuroglycopenia led to a selective increase in adrenal secretion of A which reached maximum 20 m after 2-DG administration, whereas an increase in A and NA contents occurred in plasma. Elevation in the plasma NA content seems to reflect an enhancement in sympathetic nervous activity.

Abstract:Objective: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate patients' knowledge regarding HPV vaccination and vaccine uptake in a diverse patient population. The secondary objective was to evaluate factors influencing the decision to vaccinate, potential barriers to vaccination, and to assess whether HPV vaccines were offered to or discussed with eligible patients in a safety net Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) clinic. Methods: A 28-item survey was developed using Likert scale survey questions to assess patient agreement with statements regarding HPV and the vaccine. The surveys were administered to patients in the Ob/Gyn outpatient clinics from May 2021 through September 2022. Additionally, pharmacy data were reviewed and chart review was performed as a quality improvement initiative to assess the impact of expanded HPV vaccine eligibility to patients with private insurance on vaccine uptake. Descriptive statistics were performed. Results: 304 patients completed surveys from May 2021 through September 2022. The median age of respondents was 32 (range 18-80). 16 (5%) were Non-Hispanic White, 124 (41%) were Hispanic White, 58 (19%) were Non-Hispanic Black, 6 (2%) were Hispanic Black, 29 (9.5%) were Haitian, 44 (14%) were Hispanic Other, 7 (2%) were Non-Hispanic Other, 20 (6.6%) did not respond. 45 (14%) patients were uninsured. Many patients (62%) reported that a physician had never discussed HPV vaccination with them. Seventy nine percent of patients reported they had never received the HPV vaccine, and 69% of patients reported that lack of a medical provider recommendation was a major barrier. Among patients to whom HPV vaccination had been recommended, 57% reported that the vaccine was not available the same day in clinic. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that many patients never had a provider discuss HPV vaccination with them and never received the HPV vaccine. Additionally, amongst those who did initiate HPV vaccination, completion of the series remains a key barrier. Ensuring that providers discuss HPV vaccination and that patients receive HPV vaccines, along with expanding access to and convenience of HPV vaccination are critical aspects of preventing cervical cancer.

Questions and Concerns About HPV Vaccine: A Communication Experiment

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify effective responses to parents’ questions and concerns about human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. METHODS: In 2017–2018, we surveyed a national sample of 1196 US parents of children aged 9 to 17 years. We recorded brief videos of a pediatrician providing messages that addressed 7 HPV vaccination topics that commonly elicit questions or concerns (eg, recommended age). We randomly assigned parents to 1 of the message topics; parents then viewed 4 videos on that topic in random order and evaluated the messages. RESULTS: Parents were more confident in HPV vaccine when they were exposed to messages that addressed lack of knowledge about HPV vaccine (b = 0.13; P = .01), messages that included information about cancer prevention (b = 0.11; P < .001), messages that required a higher reading level (b = 0.02; P = .01), and messages that were longer (b = 0.03; P < .001). Parents were less confident in HPV vaccine when exposed to messages in which urgency was expressed (b = −0.06; P = .005). Analyses conducted by using HPV vaccine motivation as an outcome revealed the same pattern of findings. CONCLUSIONS: We provide research-tested messages that providers can use to address parents’ HPV vaccination questions and concerns about 7 common topics. Important principles for increasing message effectiveness are to include information on the benefits of vaccination (including cancer prevention) and avoid expressing urgency to vaccinate when addressing parents' questions or concerns. Additionally, providers may need to be prepared to have longer conversations with parents who express concerns about HPV vaccine, especially regarding safety and side effects.

Results showed increased knowledge and awareness of the link between HPV infection and oropharyngeal cancers among participants. Intention to recommend was universally endorsed. The use of role-play with youth actors was highly regarded as an effective method for improving communication skills and confidence in recommending the vaccine. These findings emphasize the importance of targeted interventions to enhance oral health professional education and the intention to recommend HPV vaccine.

Abstract:Objective The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been proven effective in preventing HPV-related cancer. However, vaccination uptake in the United States remains unacceptably low. The aim of this study is to determine whether residents' HPV vaccination status, demographics, or residency training setting are predictive of vaccination prescribing practices. Methods This was an anonymous, IRB-approved, opt-in survey of OBGYN, Family Medicine, and Pediatric residents. Using the National Residency Match Program Web site, surveys were sent to program directors requesting their residents' participation. Demographics, practice settings, HPV vaccination status, reasons for being inappropriately vaccinated, and resident vaccination-prescribing practices were analyzed. Results A total of 853 residents participated. A total of 56.7% of respondents were fully vaccinated against HPV. The most common reasons for being unvaccinated were as follows: age (51.7%, n = 122), monogamous (30.9%, n = 73), do not believe it works (22.5%, n = 53), and affordability/insurance did not cover (14.4%, n = 34). Residents working in an urban setting were more likely to be vaccinated than those in suburban (odds ratio [OR] = 1.93, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.364–3.229, p < .001) or rural (OR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.461–3.359, p 0.01) settings. Males were less likely than females (OR = 0.90, 95% CI 0.702–0.997, p < .001) to be vaccinated. Single residents were more likely to be vaccinated than married (OR = 2.56, 95% CI 2.444–2.704, p < .001) or divorced (OR = 2.15, 95% CI 1.822–3.264, p 0.21) residents. Vaccinated residents were more likely to recommend HPV vaccination to their patients than those who were unvaccinated (OR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.321–2.548, p .004). Conclusions A significant portion of Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and OBGYN residents have not received appropriate vaccination against HPV. Vaccination is highest among residents who identify as female, single, or working in urban settings. Vaccinated residents were also found to be almost 2 times as likely to recommend vaccination to their patients. As such, our data suggest that targeted provider education is needed to increase vaccination rates for both trainees and their patients.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Improving provider recommendations is critical to addressing low human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage. Thus, we sought to determine the effectiveness of training providers to improve their recommendations using either presumptive “announcements” or participatory “conversations.” METHODS: In 2015, we conducted a parallel-group randomized clinical trial with 30 pediatric and family medicine clinics in central North Carolina. We randomized clinics to receive no training (control), announcement training, or conversation training. Announcements are brief statements that assume parents are ready to vaccinate, whereas conversations engage parents in open-ended discussions. A physician led the 1-hour, in-clinic training. The North Carolina Immunization Registry provided data on the primary trial outcome: 6-month coverage change in HPV vaccine initiation (≥1 dose) for adolescents aged 11 or 12 years. RESULTS: The immunization registry attributed 17 173 adolescents aged 11 or 12 to the 29 clinics still open at 6-months posttraining. Six-month increases in HPV vaccination coverage were larger for patients in clinics that received announcement training versus those in control clinics (5.4% difference, 95% confidence interval: 1.1%–9.7%). Stratified analyses showed increases for both girls (4.6% difference) and boys (6.2% difference). Patients in clinics receiving conversation training did not differ from those in control clinics with respect to changes in HPV vaccination coverage. Neither training was effective for changing coverage for other vaccination outcomes or for adolescents aged 13 through 17 (n = 37 796). CONCLUSIONS: Training providers to use announcements resulted in a clinically meaningful increase in HPV vaccine initiation among young adolescents.

Abstract:Pre-existing obesity and postoperative weight gain are related to a poor prognosis in breast cancer regardless of menopausal status. Delayed diagnosis may be one cause, but of more biological significance, especially in younger women, is the association of adiposity with estrogen receptor-negative tumors with a propensity for distant metastasis. After the menopause, the major mechanism for the relationship is the elevated estrogen synthesis by adipose tissue; these hormone-dependent tumors are estrogen receptor-positive. Insulin and some adipokines also stimulate breast cancer growth and metastasis, both directly and most probably by enhanced angiogenesis. Weight control is important, not only to target breast cancer progression, but also to reduce the risk of nonbreast cancer mortality risk associated with excess adiposity.

Abstract:Human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection and causes anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. Although HPV-related cancers can be prevented through vaccination, HPV vaccination rates are low compared to other vaccines. One of the strongest indicators for vaccination is provider recommendation, and dental health providers are well positioned to promote HPV vaccination among their patients. The purpose of this study was to determine if a continuing education (CE) course could improve dental hygienists' HPV-related knowledge and self-efficacy related to HPV vaccination recommendations. Data were collected from a sample of participants ( n = 202) at a large dental hygiene conference in the southern US. A pre- and post-tests were administered with the CE course and differences in HPV vaccine knowledge and self-efficacy in counseling, recommending, and referring for the HPV vaccine were analyzed using SAS. HPV vaccine knowledge overall significantly increased post-CE ( p < .001) and improvement was seen among several specific knowledge areas. However, knowledge regarding the common sites of HPV-related oral and oropharyngeal cancers remained moderate (82% correct) even after the CE intervention. There was no significant change from pre-test to post-test in participants' self-efficacy related to counseling patients about the HPV vaccine, recommending the HPV vaccine to patients, or referring patients for the vaccine. This study demonstrates that continuing education can improve dental hygienists' HPV-related knowledge. Since dental providers may play an important role in HPV-related cancer prevention, future work should develop continuing education tools that can motivate changes in self-efficacy and ultimately improve practice behaviors.
