Abstract:Here, we reported an excellent carbon-based solid acid catalyst for the catalytic synthesis of biodiesel, which was prepared by carbonizing a mesoporous phenolic resin and then followed by sulfonation with concentrated sulfuric acid. The influence of carbonization temperature on the pore structure and acidity was studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectrum analysis and an indirect titration method were used to demonstrate the successful modification of -SO3H groups on the carbon surface and determine the acidities of catalysts. N-2 adsorption-desorption and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the mesoporous structure and pore structure parameters. These results indicated that the sulfonated catalyst carbonized at a low temperature (400 degrees C) showed the highest acidity of 2.21 mmol H+ g(-1), meanwhile, retaining a mesoporous structure and relatively large surface area. The esterification reaction of oleic acid with methanol was employed to evaluate the performance of catalysts. The sulfonated mesoporous carbon catalyst exhibited a highly efficient activity, above 95% conversion of oleic acid with a 30 : 1 methanol/oleic acid at 70 degrees C for 3 h. Experimental parameters, including the molar ratio of reactants, reaction time and reaction temperature, were optimized and a superior recycling property was presented after five consecutive cycles.
Synthesis, characterization and application of a novel carbon-doped mix metal oxide catalyst for production of castor oil biodiesel

Abstract:A novel carbon-doped CaO–MgO catalyst had been successfully synthesized via co-precipitation method, and was utilized for the production of castor oil biodiesel through the transesterification of oil with methanol. The conditions of carbon-doped CaO–MgO catalyst preparation were optimized, and the optimal preparation parameters were as follows: urea amount of 6 wt%, calcium/magnesium molar ratio of 1:1, calcination temperature of 800 °C and calcination time of 5 h. The TGA , XRD, SEM, EDS, Basicity, BET and XPS were used for the characterization of prepared catalyst. The effects of transesterification reaction parameters on biodiesel production have been investigated, and the conversion ratio of 91.1% was achieved under the optimal conditions: methanol to oil molar ratio of 21:1, catalyst dosage of 8 wt%, reaction temperature of 70 °C and reaction time of 4 h. Meanwhile, the kinetics and thermodynamics studies indicated that the transesterification of castor oil followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics and was a non-spontaneous, endothermic reaction. Furthermore, the characterization analysis results showed that the excellent catalytic activity of composite catalyst was due to the textural property, the basicity of composite and the doped carbon in the prepared catalyst. Meanwhile, the possible reaction mechanism involved in the transesterification catalyzed by carbon-doped CaO–MgO catalyst was presented. The results of turnover frequency, environmental factor and process mass index showed that the transesterification of castor oil to synthesize biodiesel catalyzed by the prepared efficient catalyst possessed the distinct characteristic of environmentally friendly process.

Abstract:Biochar loaded with metal ions has been widely used to activate persulfate to degrade organic pollutants. However, the preparation conditions of catalysts are always controversial. In this study, the co‐heating conditions of soybean straw with high carbon and low nitrogen and nano‐iron oxide were systematically discussed by response surface method, and an efficient catalyst (Fe@BC) was obtained. Fe@BC can effectively activate sodium persulfate (PS) and degrade three synthetic azo dyes (Methyl orange (MO), Amino black 10B (AB10B), and Orange II) and rhodamine B (RhB). Under the optimum conditions, the removal rate of total organic carbon of these four dyes reached 41.1%–89.8% and the final degradation rate could reach 100%. The physicochemical properties of Fe@BC were studied by SEM, BET, XRD, XPS and TGA. The results revealed that the specific surface area of Fe@BC was 195.6m2/g. Further, reducing iron oxide by C generated C0.09Fe1.91 and zero‐valent iron. Free radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements showed that the main reactive oxide species (ROS) in the Fe@BC/PS system were hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2). Finally, Several Fe@BC modification systems were explored, the optimum pH of Fe@BC/PS system was analyzed, and the effects of Fe@BC and PS dosage on degradation performance were also studied. This study provides a scientific basis for the production of efficient catalysts and biochar energy, and an effective treatment scheme for printing and dyeing wastewater.

Effect of La-Fe/Si-MCM-41 Catalysts and CaO Additive on Catalytic Cracking of Soybean Oil for Biofuel with Low Aromatics

Abstract:La-Fe modified Si-MCM-41 (La-Fe/Si-MCM-41) catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation method and used in catalytic cracking of soybean oil (CCS) for biofuel production. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, XPS, Py-FTIR and CO2-TPD. The results showed that the aromatics content increased with the increase in B/L value, while the content of oxygenated compounds decreased, indicating that Bronsted acid sites were the major active sites for deoxygenation and aromatization reactions. Compared with Si-MCM-41, the Bronsted acidity of LFM-6 sharply decreased from 22.49 to 5.86 mu mol g(-1). Accordingly, the aromatics content was re- duced from 37.51 wt.% to 14.52 wt.% which was lower than the limitation (15 wt.%) according to the global environmental legislation. However, for the LFM-6 catalyst, the excessive loss of Bronsted acid sites and sharp decrease in BET surface area and pore volume led to the decrease in deoxygenation. As a result, the fatty acids content increased from 2.71 wt.% to 16.67 wt.% and the acid value reached 35.20 mgKOH g(-1). When the La-Fe loading increased to 15 wt.%, part of fatty acids were converted into ketones by the active sites on Fe2O3/La2O3 and strong Lewis acid sites on catalysts. Besides, the new weak Lewis acid and basic sites on Fe2O3/La2O3 exhibited the synergistic effect on promoting the generation of alkenes. The CaO/LFM-6 composite catalysts prepared by the mechanical mixing of LFM-6 and Ca0 were used in CCS to reduce the acid value of biofuel. LFM6-C-3 was proved to be an effective catalyst for CCS to produce biofuel with low aromatics (12.31 wt.%) and fatty acids (2.76 wt.%) content.
In-depth Study of Synergism Between Torrefaction and Catalyst for Balanced Production of Bio-Oil from Rice Husk Pyrolysis Based on Hydrocarbons Production, Energy Yield and Deoxygenation Degree

Abstract:Previous studies concerning biomass to bio-oil mainly focused on hydrocarbons production, and how to balance the bio-oil production in terms of hydrocarbons production, energy yield and deoxygenation degree is a challenging issue. After the pretreatment of torrefaction, catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) was performed at two-zone fixed-bed reactor. The synergism between torrefaction and catalyst during torrefaction-catalytic fast pyrolysis (T-CFP) was investigated for the balanced production of bio-oil from rice husk. Firstly, the results of two catalysts (ZrO2/n-ZSM-5 and ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/attapulgite) indicated that the catalyst with the incorporation of attapulgite (ATP) could realize the balance between the acid and basic sites, which resulted in deeper deoxygenation. Then, the results of torrefaction-catalytic pyrolysis showed that, among three torrefaction temperatures adopted, mild torrefaction (210 degrees C) had better synergistic effects with both catalysts. Specifically, catalytic pyrolysis of biomass after mild torrefaction over both catalysts realized the enhancement of deoxygenation degree and energy yield. Moreover, with the pretreatment of mild torrefaction, the performance of ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/ATP turned out to be obviously superior to ZrO2/n-ZSM-5 in terms of hydrocarbons production (7.5% > 0.8%) and deoxygenation mode. Therefore, the combination of ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/ATP and mild torrefaction could achieve more balanced production of bio-oil from T-CFP process.

Abstract:The development of heterogenous catalysts using renewable materials has received wide attention. A heterogenous catalyst has been a preferred choice as it evades the disadvantages of homogeneous catalysts, nevertheless, heterogenous catalysts has limited activity and a longer separation process. The current study emphasises the preparation of a new magnetic catalyst using oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) fibre as a carbon-based support material. The effect of different alkaline pre-treatments over the methyl ester conversion rate were investigated. The catalyst preparation parameters were studied by using the single factor optimisation approach, including the fibre loading, impregnation time, calcination temperature, and calcination time. Their effects in the esterification of oleic acid were investigated in this study. The optimisation study shows that the Na2CO3-treated(T)-EFBC magnetic catalyst had the highest esterification rate of 93.5% with 7 g EFB fibre loading, a 2 h impregnation time and a calcination temperature of 500 °C for 2 h. The catalyst possessed a good acidity of 3.5 mmol/g with excellent magnetism properties. This study showed that the catalysts are magnetically separable and exhibited good stability with 82.1% after five cycles. The oil palm EFB supported magnetic acid catalyst indicates it as a potential option to the existing solid catalysts that is economical and environmentally friendly for the esterification process.

Abstract:Solid acid catalyst has high catalytic esterification activity but with a free acid excess problem. In this paper, washing pretreatments were adopted in the catalyst preparation processes and their influences on catalytic activity and residual free acid amount were investigated. Residual free acid amount can be reduced by 33% with both washing before calcinations and washing after calcinations pretreatments. But their influences on catalyst activities were different. Washing before calcinations pretreatment reduced the catalytic activity from 80.29% to 57.72% while the other washing pretreatment had little influence on the catalyst activity. In order to describe the influence mechanism of washing pretreatments, catalysts were characterized by FT-IR and XRD. Finally, typical compounds in bio-oil were selected to form a bio-oil model compounds system. The catalyst pretreated by washing after calcinations was used on the esterification research of this bio-oil model system. The volume ratio of propanol to bio-oil model compound was 3:1. The reaction temperature was 90 °C and the amount of catalyst was 2wt% of total liquid mass. Combined with the GC-MS qualitative and quantitative results, carboxylic acids, such as formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid were converted to esters effectively.
Preparation of Fe-char Catalyst from Tank Cleaning Oily Sludge for the Catalytic Cracking of Oily Sludge

Abstract:As a hazardous organic waste, the disposal and utilization of oily sludge discharged from crude oil storage tank have received widespread attention. In this study, a novel method was proposed that Fe-char was prepared from oily sludge and was further applied to the catalytic cracking of heavy oil in oily sludge. The char exhibited a porous structure and the inherent iron oxides were directly reduced to metallic iron (Fe degrees) at 900 degrees C after carbonization. The catalytic effects of the char prepared at 600 degrees C (Char600) and 900 degrees C (Char900) were compared in terms of oil conversion efficiency and gas yield. The oil conversion efficiency over Char900 was higher than that over Char600 at 600 degrees C (90.2% vs. 80.1%). Meanwhile, the polyaromatics in the oil product were cracked into monocyclic aromatics and the H-2 and CO yields were increased significantly by using Char900, indicating that Fe degrees exhibited better catalytic performance for the cracking of hydrocarbons than iron oxides. The effects of catalytic temperatures (600-800 degrees C) on the performance of Char900 were also investigated. At 800 degrees C, the oil conversion efficiency reached the highest (95.8%) and the CO yield was 9.5 times higher than that under uncatalyzed conditions. Overall, the catalytic effect of Char900 can be attributed to the combined effects of char and Fe degrees. Char not only provided a porous surface for the adsorption of hydrocarbons, but also can react with moisture in the oily sludge through water gas reactions, enhancing the production of syngas. Moreover, Fe degrees played a significant role as a catalytic medium for promoting the hydrocarbons reforming and water gas shift (WGS) reactions.
Effective transesterification of castor oil to biodiesel catalyzed by novel carbon-based calcium composite

Abstract:A novel carbon-based calcium catalyst was prepared through impregnation-calcination method, and was successfully applied as an effective catalyst for transesterification of castor oil to produce biodiesel. The catalyst prepared through the calcination at 500 °C for 3 h (Ca/C-500–3) exhibited the optimal performance. The prepared carbon-based calcium catalyst had excellent crystallinity and morphology, high basicity and surface area according to the characterization analysis results. Based on the XPS analysis, the combination of CaO and C in Ca/C-500–3 could improve the oxygen ion donating ability, which was beneficial for the reaction of triglycerides with methanol. The optimum composite of carbon-based calcium catalyst (Ca/C-500–3) displayed the excellent catalytic activity in castor oil transesterification, and 95.44 % of biodiesel conversion was obtained with the following conditions: methanol to oil molar ratio of 18:1, catalyst dosage of 5 wt%, reaction temperature of 65 °C and reaction time of 3 h. The TOF indicated that Ca/C-500–3 was an efficiency catalyst. Meanwhile, the calculation results of E-factor and PMI manifested that the transesterification of castor oil to biodiesel catalyzed by Ca/C-500–3 was a green reaction. Ca/C-500–3 could retain its high catalytic activity after five reaction cycles. The LCC cost analysis results suggested that, using Ca/C-500–3 as catalyst, biodiesel production from castor oil as feedstock had lower production cost compared to other biodiesel productions. The various factors affecting the cost of producing biodiesel were investigated using sensitivity analysis. Finally, the possible mechanism of catalytic transesterification reaction using carbon-based calcium composites was revealed.

Abstract:The conversion of waste cooking oil to biofuel is appealing as it encompasses waste management and the introduction of an alternative clean source of energy. The biofuels market will prosper with the increasing demand for fuels, environmental laws and concerns, and energy security issues. This research aims to increase the hydrocarbon yield in catalytic cracking of waste cooking oil over acid-modified activated carbon. Sulfuric acid is used as an acid-modifying agent to increase the surface acidity of coconut-shell–activated carbon with varying acid concentrations. The modified catalysts have been characterized by BET, SEM–EDX, XRD, FTIR, TPD-NH3, and TGA. The performance of the acid-treated catalysts has been compared with that of pristine activated carbon and non-catalytic processes. It was found that increasing the acid concentration during preparation increased the liquid yields while lowering gas output. In the present study, using a 20% sulfonated AC catalyst gave the highest alkene fraction (36%) in the hydrocarbon yield. Hence, acid modification with sulfuric acid could be regarded as a low-cost and simple pre-treatment step for activated carbon in order to increase its acidity for better catalytic cracking performance.

Ph-SO3H-modified Mesoporous Carbon As an Efficient Catalyst for the Esterification of Oleic Acid

Abstract:Mesoporous carbon materials with thin pore walls (∼1.7nm) were synthesized using low-cost γ-Al2O3 as a hard template and in situ polymerized resorcinol–furfural resin as the carbon precursor. Compared with sugar, resin, a widely used carbon precursor, has higher carbon yield and simplifies the synthetic process. Ph-SO3H modified mesoporous carbon was synthesized by covalent grafting of Ph-SO3H groups on mesoporous carbon via the diazonium salt. The resulting materials were characterized by means of nitrogen adsorption analysis, TEM, 13C NMR, XRD, FTIR and sulfur elemental analysis. The modified carbons were shown to possess high surface area (∼1000m2/g), a bimodal pore size distribution and high strong acid density (1.86mmolH+/g). These sulfonated carbons were used as solid acid catalysts in the esterification of oleic acid and methanol, a key reaction in biodiesel production. Compared with the traditional solid acid Amberlyst-15, the optimized carbon catalyst exhibited much higher activity with a rate constant (1.34h−1) three times to that of Amberlyt-15 and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 128h−1 eight times that of Amberlyst-15. The efficient catalytic ability was attributed to the high surface area and a proper mesopore texture. This carbon catalyst could then be easily separated from the product by filtration. The catalyst was reused six times, and no distinct activity drop was observed after the initial deactivation.

Abstract:The effective utilization of biomass resources can bring significantly environmental and economic benefits. In this context, tea saponin, which can be easily and extensively extracted from the oil cake as the biomass waste during the seed oil production from camellia seeds, is explored as the precursor to synthesize porous carbon bearing abundant –OH and –COOH groups via a simple carbonization process. Owing to the obtained porous structure and existence of rich oxygen-containing groups serving as Lewis acidic sites, the carbonized tea saponin (CTS) can display impressive catalytic activities for CO2 cycloaddition reaction with both high selectivity (> 99%) and high yield of target cyclic carbonate under either thermally driven (80 °C and 0.1 MPa CO2) or photo-thermally driven (UV-Vis light irradiation with the light intensity of 350 mW/cm2) conditions. In addition, benefiting from the good chemical stability, CTS can be reused for many cycles with almost no catalytic activity loss, making CTS a promising biomass-based catalyst for CO2 fixation under mild conditions.

Abstract:The loss of active components, weak acid resistance, and low recover efficiency of common Ca-based catalysts limited its further development and application. In this study, to effectively produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO), a green and recyclable magnetic acid-base bifunctional CoFe/biochar/CaO catalyst was prepared from sargassum and river snail shell waste via hydrothermal method. The catalysts' structure and properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), CO 2 /NH 3 temperature programmed desorption (CO 2 /NH 3 TPD), etc., The prepared catalyst mainly consisted of the carbon skeleton, CoFe alloy, and CaO. CoFe alloy provided catalyst's ferromagnetism for magnetic separation as well as acid sites for transesterification of WCO. Ca and other metal species with nanoscale (∼5.64 nm) were dispersively anchored on sargassum biochar surface, thereby leading to good catalytic activity (99.21% biodiesel yield) and stability (91.70% biodiesel yield after the 5th cycle). In addition, response surface methodology-Box-Behnken design (RSM-BBD) revealed the optimal operational conditions were 16:1 methanol/oil molar ratio, 3 wt% catalyst dosage, 73 °C for 157 min. The maximum biodiesel yield predicted value was 98.29% and the experimental value was 99.21%, indicating good satisfaction of the established model. Moreover, the quality of WCO biodiesel met the ASTM D6751 standards. This study benefits magnetic waste-derived acid-base bifunctional catalysts for the disposal of WCO towards sustainable biodiesel production.

Abstract:Biomass, the only renewable source of organic carbon, has been widely used and developed as a functional carbon material owing to its low cost and easy accessibility. In this study, a simple and green strategy to prepare an iron catalyst based on waste biomass (litchi shell, LC) as a catalyst carrier is proposed. The Fe/LC composite catalyst was prepared by the one-step carbonization of LC impregnated with iron nitrate to improve its dispersion. During CO2 hydrogenation, the biomass-based carbon material effectively inhibited the oxidation of water on the catalyst. Thus, the stability of the catalyst improved and the formation of olefins was significantly promoted, resulting in excellent catalytic performance. The optimized Fe/LC catalyst exhibited good catalytic performance for CO2 hydrogenation, and its selectivity for light olefins (C2–4=) was 47 wt% (olefin/alkane molar ratio=3.1). The characterization results revealed the formation of a graphitic-carbon-anchored Fe3O4 structure during high-temperature carbonization. This structure played a coordinated role with the natural K minerals in LC, effectively improving the CO2-hydrogenation activity of the catalyst and increasing its selectivity for C2–4= products. The direct use of waste biomass without any chemical pretreatment, purification, or addition of promoters provides a simple design method and synthesis strategy for the low-cost, large-scale preparation of high-performance carbon-based catalysts.

Abstract:In bio-refinery and other catalytic reactions, heterogeneous catalysts confer advantage over homogenous catalysts due to minimized recovery and separation costs. However, templating surfactant and solid support for the synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts ought to consider their cheap sources and environmentally friendliness for their sustainable use. Thus, with the vision to make the process significantly benign, in the present work, solid acids were synthesised from renewable sources (castor oil as surfactant and rice husk as the source of silica). The synthesised castor oil-templated mesoporous sulfonic acid modified catalysts (SO3H-MTS and SO3H-MT-RHS) were characterised and evaluated for catalytic esterification of acetic acid (C2), hexanoic acid (C6), lauric acid (C12), palmitic acid (C16), and ricinoleic acid (C18) with butanol at 110 °C. Physicochemical properties of the synthesised materials were characterised by nitrogen porosimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetry, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The porosimetric analysis of the synthesised materials revealed a type IV adsorption-desorption isotherm reminiscent of the mesoporous structures. The surface area of the synthesised materials decreased upon functionalisation by sulfonic group. The DRIFTS and XPS confirmed the attachment of sulfonic functional group on the synthesised materials. Evaluation of the catalytic performance of the synthesized materials was determined through analysis of carboxylic acid conversions using gas chromatographic technique. SO3H-MTS gave higher acid conversions compared to SO3H-MT-RHS. The sulfated solid acid catalysts showed good catalytic activity on the esterification with conversion ranging from 96-37% for C2-C18 with butanol at 110 °C within 6 h. Such castor oil-templated mesoporous sulphated solid acid catalysts can therefore be applied in biodiesel production upon process optimisation.

Engineered Biomass Waste‐Derived Activated Biochar Catalyst for Biodiesel Production from Jatropha curcas Oil

Abstract:ZnCl2 impregnation of the cellulosic precursor is an effective way to generate carbon catalysts with a mesoporous structure and high specific surface area. Herein, we attempt to explore the synthesis of Citrus Limonum Pericarpium (lemon peel), an activated biochar catalyst produced via pyrolysis and consequent sulfonation. The obtained biochar catalyst exhibited notable characteristics, including a high surface area of 863.0 m2 g−1 and a substantial sulfur content of 4.02 wt.% (1.25 mmol g−1) by EDX. Following, analytical techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy, BET, X‐ray diffraction, Fourier‐transform infrared, and TGA, were conducted for a comprehensive analysis of the catalyst. Subsequently, we applied the catalyst to optimize the transesterification process of Jatropha curcas oil (JCO), yielding an impressive 95.2% ± 0.4% yield. The optimization parameters were established with a reaction duration of 60 min, a temperature of 100°C, 8 wt.% catalyst, and JCO: MeOH ratio of 1 : 20. Catalyst reusability was probed over seven subsequent cycles with the final yield observed of over 88.4% ± 0.6%, while the decrease in yield was explained by EDX analysis. In summary, our investigation successfully navigated the synthesis and practical application of a sulfonated porous biochar catalyst for JCO transesterification, achieving noteworthy yields while addressing environmental concerns.

Abstract:As an important fine chemical products,n-caprylic acid esterification has special application value in many fields such as synthetic cosmetics and pharmaceutical intermediates due to its good reactivity.Concentrated sulfuric acid is generally used as catalyst in the traditional production process of n-caprylic acid esterification,which can result in many serious problems,such as strong corrosiveness to the experimental apparatus,difficult catalyst recovery,serious environmental pollution,etc.So that the traditional production process is not consistent with the current requirements of green,economy and sustainable development.On the contrary,the strong acid macroporouscation exchange resin is widely used as an ideal catalyst due to its many excellent properties,including high catalytic activity and selectivity,good chemical stability,non-corrosiveness to equipment,no"three wastes",and easy separation.Effects of catalyst amount,ratio of the solvent to substrate,temperature,circulating flowofthe intensified reactor andcatalyst cycles were explored to obtain a suitable reaction system.Besides,the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the esterification process were further calculated.It could be seem that the experimental values were almost consistent with the theoretical ones,which provided powerful guidance for the industrial applicationof n-caprylic acid esterification.

Abstract:The sulfonated magnetic porous biochar-based solid catalysts have a significant potential to replace homogeneous acid catalysts in order to decrease corrosion issues and the environmental risks brought on by homogeneous acid catalysts. For this purpose, produced biochar from the rice husk pyrolysis at 700°C was employed for the synthesis of a biochar-based magnetic acid catalyst. The base structure of the catalyst was modified and magnetized using different ratios of ZnCl 2 and FeCl 3 . The magnetic porous biochar was sulfonated with two sulfonation agents including H 2 SO 4 and ClSO 3 H. Characteristic analyzes of BET (Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller), Scanning Electron Microscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometer, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, and elemental analysis were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the synthesized catalysts. The magnetic biochar-sulfonated with ClSO 3 H was evaluated as the selected catalyst in the biodiesel generation process from oleic acid (OA) as a representative of bio-oils. The central composite design (CCD) based on the response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the process and examine the effectiveness of various parameters, including catalyst concentration based on the OA weight (3-15 wt.%), experiment duration (1-5 h), MeOH: Oil molar ratio (5-25), and reaction temperature (40-100°C), on the efficiency of biodiesel generation. The optimum yield was achieved at 98.11 % under the optimal condition, which included an experiment duration of 4.8 h, catalyst concentration of 9.9 wt.%, MeOH: Oil ratio of 16:1, and reaction temperature of 74.8°C.

Abstract:Upcycling Cr-containing sulfate waste into catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation reaction benefits both pollution mitigation and economic sustainability. In this study, FeCrO3/Fe2O3 catalysts were successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal method using Cr-containing sodium sulfate (Cr-SS) as a Cr source for efficient conversion and stable treatment of Cr. The removal rate of Cr in Cr-SS can reach 99.9% at the optimized hydrothermal conditions. When the synthesized catalysts were activated and used for the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, a 50% increase in CO2 conversion was achieved compared with the catalyst prepared by impregnation with a comparable amount of Cr. According to the extraction and risk assessment code (RAC) of the Reference Office of the European Community Bureau (BCR), the synthesized FeCrO3/Fe2O3 is risk-free. This work not only realizes the detoxification of the Cr-SS but transfers Cr into stable FeCrO3 for application in a catalytic field, which provides a strategy for the harmless disposal and resource utilization of Cr-containing hazardous waste.
