Abstract:Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and progressive neurological disease that affects the central nervous system, resulting in a wide spectrum of cognitive, emotional, and physical deficits. The progressive course of MS poses significant challenges to patients and has a profound impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The style of coping adopted plays a critical role in determining how individuals with MS adapt to and face the challenges of the disease and their overall well-being. This paper aims to examine the impact of coping strategies on HRQoL in young adults un-/minimally impaired (<5 years, EDSS ≤ 2.5) by MS (age 18–35 years). This retrospective cross-sectional cohort study included 98 young adults (33 males and 65 females) with relapsing–remitting MS who underwent neurological assessment using the Expanded Disability Status Scale. Participants completed the Italian version of the Multiple Sclerosis QoL-54 (MSQoL-54), which provides a physical and mental health score, and the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory (Brief-COPE). The results showed a significant relationship between COPE scores and physical and mental health. Subjects affected by MS who tend to use more frequent coping strategies such as active planning, personal growth, and acceptance showed a better overall well-being and quality of life. These findings are relevant to clinical practice given the need to understand the coping variable to improve HRQoL. Understanding these relationships is crucial for developing effective interventions to enhance the well-being of MS subjects.

Abstract:Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS), affects functional ability and quality of life (QoL). Depression, fatigue, and disability status are among the many factors that have been shown to impact QoL in people with MS, but the extent to which MS-related cognitive impairment is related to QoL is understudied in the literature. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine relevant predictors of QoL from a wide list of symptoms including physical disability, and a multi-dimensional computerized cognitive assessment battery (CAB), depression, fatigue, and demographic variables (including employment status). In addition, the unique predictive power of cognitive impairment on QoL was explored in relation to other common factors of disease impact. Methods: 171 people with MS (PwMS) were evaluated with a computerized assessment battery (CAB), EDSS examination, and validated Patient Reported Outcome (PRO) measures (Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale, MSIS-29; Beck Depression Inventory - Second Edition BDI-2; and the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, MFIS). Results: 171 PwMS were included [Age: 46.02 years ± 9.85, 124 (72.5%) female]. Depression and fatigue scores were highly correlated with MSIS-29. EDSS, unemployment, memory, executive functioning, and motor skills were moderately correlated with MSIS-29. Predictors of QoL were EDSS, depression, fatigue, executive functioning, and attention. Attention and executive functioning were predictive of QoL even after controlling for demographic variables, fatigue, depression, and physical disability status. Conclusion: Findings indicate the need for comprehensive and quantified evaluation of all factors associated with disease burden, which will ultimately serve to improve the QoL in PwMS through more targeted and patient-centered care.

Abstract:Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by a variety of symptoms that have a major impact on quality of life (QoL) even in early stages. In addition to individual motor, sensory, visual disturbances, and brainstem and sphincter disorders, which are expressed through the widely used Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), other manifestations of MS have a detrimental effect on overall functioning and quality of life, such as cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, fatigue, and pain. However, when talking about QoL, categorical definitions cannot be used because although the concept is generally understood, it is highly nuanced. Suffering from MS can significantly reduce QoL. Numerous research studies have focused on trying to identify and assess which are the elements that most affect the loss of QoL in MS people. However, in addition to the fact that the measurement of QoL can be subjective, it is very difficult to consider these elements in isolation, as they are interrelated. One such limiting factor of QoL that has been investigated is cognitive impairment (CI). This has been shown to have an impact on the lives of MS people, although the different approaches that have been taken to assess CI have evident limitations.

A systematic review of the association between coping strategies and quality of life among caregivers of children with chronic illness and/or disability

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Background</h3><p class="Para">Parents of children with chronic illness have reported decreased psychological and physical quality of life (QoL) relative to parents of children without such illness, which may be associated with the extent of complexity involved in the caregiving role. Given that coping strategies have been reported to influence QoL, our goal was to synthesize existing research about the association between coping strategies and QoL in caregivers of children with chronic illness. We were particularly interested in whether coping strategies may mediate the association between caregiving complexity and QoL, or may modify the association.</p><h3 class="Heading">Methods</h3><p class="Para">We developed an electronic search strategy to identify relevant citations in Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO and CINAHL. Two reviewers independently assessed retrieved citations against pre-specified inclusion criteria in two stages of screening. One reviewer abstracted data on study characteristics, methods to address confounding, measurement tools, risk of bias, and results with respect to associations of interest. A second reviewer validated extracted data. We summarized results narratively.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">2602 citations were screened and 185 full-text articles reviewed. The 11 articles that met inclusion criteria addressed 5 diseases and included a total of 2155 caregivers. Ten of the 11 included studies were cross-sectional. We identified some evidence that coping was associated with QoL: in three studies, coping strategies considered to be adaptive were positively associated with psychological QoL while in one study, maladaptive strategies were negatively associated with psychological QoL. Only two studies considered coping as a potential mediating variable in the association between caregiving complexity and parental QoL, with inconsistent findings and challenges in interpreting cross-sectional associations. No studies considered coping as a moderating variable. The variability among instruments used to measure key constructs, particularly coping strategies, made it difficult to synthesize results.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">We found that coping strategies may be associated with psychological QoL among parents of children with chronic illness. We also identified important research gaps related to the consistent and clear measurement of coping strategies and their prospective association with QoL. Understanding how coping strategies are associated with QoL is important to inform the development of interventions to support families of children with chronic illness.</p>

Understanding lifestyle self-management regimens that improve the life quality of people living with multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Lifestyle self-management as an intervention for people living with multiple sclerosis (plwMS) is an emerging area of research. Previous reviews have highlighted a need to systematically identify effective self-management regimens that influence the health and well-being of plwMS using a common metric of success. Objectives: To examine the effectiveness of lifestyle self-management strategies and interventions aimed at improving the quality of life (QOL), and/or disability of plwMS. The review also aimed to narratively explore common elements of self-management interventions that were effective at improving the outcomes of interest. Methods: A systematic search was performed using five scientific databases. The review process followed the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and was registered with PROSPERO (Ref: CRD42021235982). Results: A total of 57 studies including 5830 individuals diagnosed with MS, met the inclusion criteria. Self-management interventions included physical activity, fatigue, dietary, stress/coping, emotional, symptom and medical management, and lifestyle and wellbeing programs. Self-reported QOL improved in 35 of 47 studies. Dietary intervention had no statistically significant overall effect on reducing MS disability, (P = 0.18). Heterogeneity limited the ability to pool the effects from a large number of eligible studies of the same design. Conclusion: Multicomponent self-management interventions, multimodal delivery methods, and cognitive behavioural theory principles were common elements of self-management interventions that improved the QOL of plwMS. However, these results should be interpreted with caution and care should be taken in its clinical application. This review has the potential to inform future management practices for plwMS and has revealed a significant gap in the literature, warranting high-quality, large-scale experimental, and observational studies that address lifestyle management.

Abstract:Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), which mainly affects women and young adults in their most productive years of life. Given to fact that the disease is unpredictable and has uncertain outcomes, the grater are physical and emotional efforts that an individual has to take, and that inevitably causes additional exhaustion. Assessment of disease severity based only on an objective clinical finding is not enough, because it does not give insight into the subjective experience of disease symptoms and difficulties with which these patients meet in everyday life life. Most MS sufferers most likely will experience a wide range of physical, psychological and social problems. Physical disability, fatigue, motor incapacity and sexual dysfunctions that occur with the progression of the disease, most often lead to the deterioration of the quality of life in people with MS. In addition to these factors, changes in psychological status are inevitable. Depression is the most common psychiatric comorbidity of MS that worsens the health condition of the patient. Studies on psychiatric comorbidities and ways of coping with MS generally highlight the connection between depression and alexithymia in MS. Prevalence alexithymia in MS patients goes up to 50%, it is associated with anxiety and significantly contributes to the severity and severity of depression. When it comes to the therapy of depression in MS of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (CBT) is recommended as the first line of treatment, but also the application of pharmacotherapy i.e. administration of sertraline and escitalopram with short-term use of alprazolam, and more recently, more and more studies are investigating neuroprotective effect of antidepressants, and recommend the use of fluoxetine. Directing preventive measures to improving social activities and prevention institutionalization ie. combining medical rehabilitation, psychosocial help and social support prevent that the disease from becoming a disability leading to complete isolation. It is also necessary to direct resources to adequate treatment of depression as determining factor of quality of life, mental health and prognostic factor of the clinical picture and course of MS.

Abstract:The impact of subjective cognitive concerns (SCCs) on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) has practically not been studied. In this study the relationship between subjective cognitive concerns and quality of life in PwMS was explored. Furthermore, to explore whether psychological resilience acts as a mediator in the relationship between SCCs and QoL. A total of 214 PwMS were surveyed using the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Inventory, the Multiple Sclerosis Neuropsychological Questionnaire (MSNQ) and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Our results showed that, SCCs is a predictor of levels of perceived QoL in PwMS. Patients who report higher scores on the MSNQ also showed a worse quality of life in global terms. The results also showed that resilience mediates the relationship between SCCs and QoL, both for the physical dimension of quality of life (physical health composite) and for the mental health dimension (mental health composite). In our patients, as resilience levels increase, the negative impact of SCCs on QoL decreases. Considering that resilience is a modifiable protective factor, the implementation of interventions aimed at enhancing resilience can have a favorable impact on the psychological well-being and quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis.

Abstract:The second triennial FASEB Summer Research Conference on “Clonal Senescence and Differentiation” (August 17‐22, 1996) focused on the interrelationships between aging processes and DNA damage and repair. The attendees represented a cross section of senior and junior investigators working in fields ranging from classic cellular gerontology to yeast and nematode models of aging to basic mechanisms of DNA damage and repair. The perceived impact of multiple sclerosis and self-management: The mediating role of coping strategies

Abstract:Low level of self-management in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered to be a predominant factor that leads to poor rehabilitation efficacy. Studies focusing on the relationship between self-management and psychological variables that can be modified could contribute to expanding the knowledge needed to propose interventional programs aiming at patient activation. This study aimed to analyze whether coping strategies play a mediating role in the association between the perceived impact of MS and level of self-management in people with MS. The cross-sectional study included 382 people with MS. The participants completed the Multiple Sclerosis Self-Management Scale—Revised, Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale-29, and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations. The study hypothesis was evaluated using mediation analysis. The STROBE checklist specifically prepared for cross-sectional research was applied in this study for reporting. Results indicate that the emotion- and problem-focused strategies of coping can be treated as mediating the association between the MS impact and level of self-management in people with MS. A negative relationship was found between the perceived MS impact and problem-oriented coping, while a positive relationship was found between problem-oriented coping and self-management. Furthermore, a positive relationship was found between the MS impact and emotion-oriented coping, while a negative relationship was found between emotion-oriented coping and self-management. The indirect role of avoidance-oriented coping was not significant. Our study confirms the role played by coping strategies in individuals’ self-management. In MS, self-management determined by perceived MS impact can be controlled by decreasing emotional-coping while increasing problem-coping strategies. Our study imparts new knowledge regarding the potential interventions for improving the level of self-management in people with MS. It indicates that recognition of individuals’ illness perceptions as well as maladaptive coping strategies can help health professionals identify those who might be having lower level of self-management.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Self-management interventions have become increasingly popular in the management of long-term health conditions; however, little is known about their impact on psychological well-being in people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).PURPOSE: To examine the effectiveness of self-management interventions on improving depression, anxiety and health related quality of life in people with MS.METHOD: A structured literature search was conducted for the years 2000 to 2016. The review process followed the PRISMA guidelines, and is registered with PROSPERO (no. CRD42016033925).RESULTS: The review identified 10 RCT trials that fulfilled selection criteria and quality appraisal. Self-management interventions improved health-related quality of life in 6 out of 7 studies, with some evidence of improvement in depression and anxiety symptoms.CONCLUSION: Although the results are promising more robust evaluation is required in order to determine the effectiveness of self-management interventions on depression, anxiety and quality of life in people with MS. Evaluation of the data was impeded by a number of methodological issues including incomplete content and delivery information for the intervention and the exclusion of participants representing the disease spectrum. Recommendations are made for service development and research quality improvement.

Abstract:Objectives: Many people who live with long-term illness experience a decline in their quality of life. The primary aim of this qualitative study was to identify aspects of life that contributed to the quality of the lives of people who had one particular chronic illness, namely multiple sclerosis (MS). A secondary aim was to use this information to highlight areas where there was potential for effective intervention by health or social services. Methods: Sixteen people with MS who lived in a variety of circumstances and had a range of disabilities were interviewed in depth. Views relating to personal experience of chronic illness, diagnosis, living with disability, and conventional and alternative treatments were explored. Transcripts were analysed using a grounded theory approach. Results: Analysis of the interviews revealed that being subjectively reasonably happy and as socially active as desired was central to an acceptable quality of life. The extent of the personal control that participants were able to exert and their individual illness trajectory were found to be central to whether or not this aim was achieved. In addition, the importance of social comparison was revealed, although its influence upon quality of life was somewhat inconsistent. A number of other factors were found to play an influential role in the quality of people's lives. These are described and plausible links between factors are proposed. Conclusions: Many aspects of living with chronic illness are unavoidable, but health or social intervention can affect others. Inappropriate personal assistance may result in dependency, which detracts from personal control and worsens quality of life. When appropriate, however, support may have beneficial consequences. By recognising the specific factors that link personal control and the illness trajectory, appropriate and timely support can be negotiated.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To investigate the relationship between coping mechanisms in people with multiple sclerosis (MS, pwMS) and cognitive, physical, and psychosocial factors such as socio-demographic characteristics, disability, personality, stigma, quality of life, depression, and anxiety. Method One hundred and two pwMS were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Demographics and clinical characteristics were recorded. Coping with the MS Scale (CMSS), including seven subscales, which are problem-solving, physical assistance, acceptance, avoidance, personal health control, energy conservation, and emotional release, was used to measure coping. Anxiety and depression levels, stigma, neuropsychological symptoms, and personality were measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), EuroQol-5D Quality of Life Scale (EQ-5D), Quality of Life in Neurological Diseases (NeuroQoL) -Stigma Scale, Multiple Sclerosis Neuropsychological Questionnaire (MSNQ), and Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Abbreviated Form (EKA-GGK), respectively. Results There was a weak statistically significant positive correlation between the physical support subscale and age and the disease duration and a strong positive correlation with EDSS (r = .214, p = .035; r = .213, p = .036; r = .582, p ≤ .0001, respectively). There was a moderate negative relationship between the physical support subscale and the EQ-5D mobility, self-care, pain, and health subscales (r = −.434, p = .000; r = −.482, p = .000; r = −.526, p ≤ .001, respectively), a weak negative correlation with anxiety, and a strong negative relationship with usual activities (r = −.379, p ≤ .001; r = −.243, p = .017; r = −.384, p ≤ .001, respectively). Conclusion It has been shown that coping with MS can be affected by cognitive, physical, and psychosocial factors.

Abstract:Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) causes patients' perceptions of self-efficacy and social support to decline. Patients with MS have to change day-to-day activities and encounter various physical and psychosocial problems while adapting to the new lifestyle. Aims: The research aimed to define the quality of life, self-efficacy and social support in patients with MS and to determine the relationship between quality of life, perception of self-efficacy and perceived social support. It is descriptive and correlational research. Data were collected using surveys. Methods: The sample consisted of 116 patients with MS. Patients who applied at the neurology in-patient and outpatient clinics between March 2021 and September 2021 were assessed for inclusion criteria. Written and verbal consent was obtained. The patients read and answered the questionnaires. Their quality of life was assessed using the Functional Assessment of Multiple Sclerosis Scale (FAMS). Self-efficacy perception was measured using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), and social support was assessed using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Results: The study found that the other concerns, symptoms, thinking and fatigue were most negatively affected the quality of life subscales. Perception of self-efficacy was found to be moderate, while social support was high. Analyses revealed a positive correlation between MSPSS scores, FAMS scores and GSE scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: Health professionals need to provide education and counselling to manage MS-related symptoms, use therapeutic communication techniques to improve self-efficacy, give positive reinforcement and cooperate with families to increase social support.
A Systematic Review of Caregiver Coping Strategies in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Frontotemporal Dementia

Abstract:Caregivers of patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) often experience distressing symptoms related to their caregiving role. This review evaluates the existing literature on coping and their relationship to ALS and FTD caregiver psychological wellbeing. Published articles were identified via a systematic search of four databases (Cinahl Complete, Medline, Embase and PsycINFO). Overall, problem-focused coping strategies such as active coping and planning was used most often by ALS and FTD caregivers. Positive emotion-focused coping strategies such as acceptance were also frequently used by FTD caregivers. In contrast, dysfunctional coping strategies such as self-oriented reactions including self-blame, denial and self-preoccupation appeared to be the most salient coping strategy negatively impacting on caregiver psychological wellbeing. Six different coping measures were used and their psychometric properties were typically under-reported or satisfactory at best when reported. While coping is as an important aspect of caregivers’ experience, it remains unclear how the temporal dimensions of the coping process as well as stressor specificity influences psychological adaptation, and consequently, development of targeted caregiver intervention. The need for future studies to define the coping process more clearly in order to capture the unique stressors encountered by ALS and FTD caregivers throughout the different disease stages is emphasised.

Abstract:Background: Determining the relative importance of factors that predict quality of life (QoL) in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) must be addressed through multiple regression metrics, e.g. relative weights, which are designed to solve colinearity problems. Objective: We aimed to compare disease variables, Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), depressive symptomatology (BDI-FS), cognitive performance and coping in predicting MS patients’ QoL, using relative weights. Methods: We assessed 97 patients with MS, using the Functional Assessment of MS (FAMS) as the criterion. Results: EDSS predicted global and physical QoL domains, whereas BDI-FS predicted general contentment and global QoL. Conclusion: EDSS and BDI-FS are relevant determinants of QoL in people with MS.
Coping Strategies in Patients with Acquired Brain Injury: A Scoping Review

Abstract:In recent years, there has been marked interest in looking at the psychological consequences of medical conditions, such as traumatic or acquired brain injuries. Coping strategies are essential for clinical recovery and for dealing with the stressful events that a clinical condition brings with it. The purpose of this review is to analyze studies that explore how coping strategies influence psychological changes in patients with acquired brain injury. Studies were identified from research in the PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases. According to our findings, patients with ABI utilize different coping strategies based on the circumstances and factors such as the diagnosis severity, their age, time lived with the pathology, and personal characteristics, which have an influence on quality of life and rehabilitation. This review demonstrated that coping strategies have an impact on different aspects of the clinical and personal lives of patients with ABI. The rehabilitation process must consider the influence of these mechanisms on dealing with situations, as they can change cognitive and emotional perceptions of patients' experience with the disease, as well as laying the foundations for functional or dysfunction in terms of the propensity of a person for the path of psychological and physical recovery.

Abstract:The ability to cope with major stressors and adversity in our lives is as individual as the human experience. An unpredictable disease such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can demand major adjustments to one's lifestyle, employment, and personal relationships. Why is it that some sail smoothly through major upheaval in all of these realms despite the acquisition of significant physical disability while others are immobilized by seemingly trivial disruptions in their routine. How can we, as health professionals, assist those who are coping in a non-adaptive manner, to identify and implement more effective strategies. Does focused counseling early in the disease promote effective coping? Existing literature reviews coping with chronic illness, detailing the tools and strategies which individuals may use to manage stressors. This paper will build on this foundation of knowledge. How well you are determines how well you cope. The emphasis will be on "premorbid" personality traits which may be critical to coping. The author will critically examine the practicality of utilizing existing assessment tools for those at differing stages of MS and offer assessment guidelines for nurses working both with newly diagnosed and well-established disease. Suggestions for counseling techniques which may promote effective coping behaviors will be offered. How an individual copes with a chronic illness such as MS has implications for that person's family, social network and society at large. Those who become overwhelmed by a disease such as MS will stop working earlier, utilize more healthcare resources, and rate themselves as having poor quality of life. Nurses and other health professionals who have regular contact with those with MS may be able to influence this scenario.
The relationship between psychopathology, psychosocial adjustment, social support and quality of life in multiple sclerosis

Abstract:Objectives. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease which affects physical,psychological and social functioning of patients. In this study we aim to indicate psychiatric comorbidity, some psychosocial factors and their associations with quality of life in patients with MS. Methods. A total of 227 patients underwent psychiatric examination and the following scales were applied: Socio-demographic data form, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54 (MSQOL-54), Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self report (PAIS-SR) and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Results. Among 227 patients with MS, 67.8% (n = 154) had psychiatric diagnosis; 24.2% (n = 55) had depression,19.8% (n = 45) had adjustment disorder, 14.9% (n = 34) had anxiety disorder, 7.1% (n=16) had dysthymic disorder and 1.8% (n = 4) had bipolar disorder. Patients with a psychiatric diagnosis had lower scores in role limitations due to emotional problems, emotional well-being, health perceptions, social function, cognitive function, health distress and mental health composite of MSQOL-54. PAIS-SR and MSPSS scores were significantly lower in MS patients with a psychiatric diagnosis. PAIS-SR scores were negatively correlated with role limitations-emotional, emotional well-being, social function, sexual function, satisfaction with sexual function, physical health composite and mental health composite scores of MSQOL-54. MSPSS total score was positively correlated with emotional well-being score of MSQOL-54. Conclusions. In MS patients, there is a high prevalence of psychopathology and it is associated with quality of life, perceived social support and psychosocial adjustment of the patients. Quality of life is reduced especially in emotional and mental aspects in patients with a psychiatric diagnosis. Diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology in MS patients seems crucial to decrease disease burden.
Psychological Resilience as a Mediator Between Depression and Quality of Life in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Abstract:Depression represents a significant and prevalent challenge among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) substantially impacting their quality of life (QoL). This study explores the mediating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between depression and QoL in a sample of patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). This online cross-sectional study involves 179 Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) patients. The PwMS completed three questionnaires: the Chicago Multiscale Depression Inventory, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life (MSQOL-29). The results confirmed that higher levels of depression were associated with lower QoL in RRMS patients. However, the inclusion of psychological resilience as a mediator attenuated this direct effect, suggesting that resilience plays a crucial role in mitigating the negative impact of depression on QoL.

Abstract:BackgroundDespite the importance of coping in caregiving, there are few studies on the relationship between coping and quality of life in caregivers of the frail dependent elderly. Thus, this study aims to analyze the relationship between coping strategies and quality of life dimensions in primary caregivers of dependent elderly relatives.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted from 86 caregivers. Predictive variables were coping strategies (problem-focused, emotion-focused, socially-supported, and dysfunctional); dependent variables were quality of life dimensions (psychological, physical, relational, and environmental); and potential confounding variables were age, gender, perceived health and burden of caregiver, and functional capacity of care receiver. Correlation coefficients were calculated and multiple linear regression analysis was performed.ResultsAfter controlling for potential confounders, dysfunctional coping was related to worse quality of life in the psychological dimension, while emotion-focused and socially-supported coping were related to superior psychological and environmental dimensions of quality of life. The physical and relational dimensions of quality of life were not related to coping strategies.Conclusions1) it is important to consider coping strategies in the assessment of primary caregivers of dependent elderly relatives; 2) the quality of life of caregivers is related to their coping strategies, 3) their quality of life can be worsened by avoidance-type coping, and 4) their quality of life can be improved by active emotion-focused coping and socially-supported coping.
