Abstract:Fluoride ferroelectrics containing 3d transition metal ions are potential single-phase multiferroics. Pure phase Pb5Fe3F19 powders are prepared by the solid-state reaction, which is confirmed by the X-ray diffraction with isostructure to Pb5Cr3F19. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms that Fe ions are in the valence state of +3. Ferroelectricity is confirmed by the observation of amplitude and phase hysteresis loops by piezoresponse force microscopy at room temperature. Two anomalies are observed at T N1 of 78 K and T N2 of 21 K in the temperature dependent magnetization (M−T) curves, which is due to the onset of two antiferromagnetic transitions. The bifurcation between the zero-field cooled and field cooled M−T curves at temperatures below T N1 of 78 K is attributed to competition of the complicated antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the neighboring Fe3+ ions, leading to the magnetic relaxation. Small hysteresis with negligible coercivity can be observed in the field dependent magnetization curves below T N1. The magnetization and coercivity are significantly enhanced with further decreasing temperature, indicating the weak ferromagnetism. The observed ferromagnetism might be due to the magnetoelectric coupling between the ferroelectric polarization and magnetization, leading to the spin canting of the antiferromagnetic coupling between neighboring Fe3+ ions. The magnetoelectric coupling is confirmed by the observation of magnetodielectric effect, which is due to the strong magnetic and structural coupling.

Abstract:Fluoride ferroelectrics containing 3d transition metal ions are potential multiferroic candidates due to their ionic bonds rather than the covalent bonds in oxide ferroelectrics. In this work, Pb3Fe2F12 ceramics are prepared by solid-state reaction. Rietveld refinement of the x-ray diffraction pattern suggests that Pb3Fe2F12 adopts a crystalline structure similar to that of Pb5Fe3F19, containing FeF6 octahedra chains and isolated FeF6 octahedra. The deficiency of Pb content leads to the mixed valence states of Fe ions and strong distortion among the octahedra, thus, complicating exchange interactions between Fe ions. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN1 is observed at 160 K, which is significantly higher than that of stoichiometric Pb5Fe3F19. Various magnetic anomalies are observed at low temperatures due to the onset of different antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between Fe ions of different strengths with TN2 (∼45 K), TN3 (∼37 K), and TN4 (∼10 K). Weak ferromagnetism can be observed below TN2, and significant exchange bias is observed below TN4. Dielectric peaks, together with a magnetic field tunable pyroelectric current peak, are observed at around TN1, suggesting the multiferroic nature and magnetoelectric coupling in Pb3Fe2F12.

Theoretical Study of Co-Doping Effects with Different Ions on the Multiferroic Properties of BiFeO3 Nanoparticles

Abstract:Using a microscopic model and the Green's function theory, the size and co-doping effects on the multiferroic and optical (band gap) properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) nanoparticles are investigated. The magnetization increases, whereas the band gap energy decreases with decreasing nanoparticle size. The substitution with Co/Mn, Nd/Sm, Ce/Ni, and Cd/Ni is discussed and explained on a microscopic level. By the ion co-doping appear different strains due to the difference between the doping and host ionic radii, which leads to changes in the exchange interaction constants for tuning all properties. It is observed that by co-doping with Nd/Sm at the Bi site or with Co/Mn at the Fe site, the multiferroic properties are larger than those by doping with one ion. Moreover, by doping with Ni, the multiferroic properties are reduced. But by adding another ion (for example Ce or Cd), an increase in these properties is obtained. This shows the advantages of the co-doping, its flexibility, and its greater possibility of tuning the multiferroic properties compared to single ion substitution. The band gap energy decreases for all co-dopants. The polarization increases with increasing magnetic field. This is evidence of magnetoelectric coupling, which is enhanced by co-doping with Co/Mn. The observed theoretical results are in good qualitative agreement with the existing experimental data.
Exploring Doping Effects on Magnetocaloric, Magnetoelastic, and Magnetostriction Properties of Fe 2 AlB 2 : A First-Principles Study

Abstract:Fe2AlB2 boasts promising magnetocaloric properties and anisotropic magnetic behavior. This study explores the impact of elemental substitutions on its magnetic and magnetocaloric properties using density functional theory, the cluster expansion method, and Monte Carlo simulations. Results show that doping at Fe or B sites induces a rotation of the easy axis of magnetization and noticeably changes the magnitude of magnetic anisotropy energy. Predicted Curie temperatures are 308, 210, and 359 K for Fe2AlB2, Fe2GaB2, and Fe2SiB2, respectively. The magnetic entropy change exhibits anisotropic behavior, especially near the transition temperature. Interestingly, full substitution of Al with Ga or Si does not significantly enhance the magnetic entropy change, suggesting other factors play a dominant role in enhancing magnetocaloric properties of these materials. Therefore, our study delves into magnetostructural coupling and defect formation due to partial chemical substitutions. The C doping induces substantial lattice parameter changes, Si, Ga, and Ge doping improves magnetocaloric properties, while Cr and V doping reduces magnetostructural coupling. Antisite defect formation at the Al site are induced by Fe near Ga, Ge, and Si atoms, indicating enhanced defect formation and increased saturation magnetization. Fe2AlB2 exhibits anisotropic features in its magnetoelastic constants and magnetostrictive coefficients. This implies that the material’s response to changes in magnetic fields is contingent on the orientation of its crystal lattice, and, additionally, Fe2AlB2 can experience expansion or contraction along distinct crystallographic directions in response to alterations in the magnetization direction.

Abstract:Electronic polarization or bond relaxation can effectively alter the electronic and magnetic behavior of materials by doping impurity atom. For this aim, the thermodynamic, electronic and magnetic performances of cubic BiFeO3 have been modulated by the 3d transition metal (TM) dopants (Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) based on the density functional theory. Results show that the doped specimen with low impurity concentration is more stable than that with high impurity concentration. The Mulliken charge values and spin magnetic moments of TM element are making major changes, while those of all host atoms are making any major changes. Especially, it is the linear relation between the spin magnetic moments of TM dopants and the total magnetic moment of doped specimens; thus, the variations of total magnetic moment of doped specimens are decided by the spin magnetic moments of TM dopants, thought the total magnetic moments of doped specimens mainly come from Fe atom and TM dopants. Besides, as double TM atoms substitution the Fe atoms, the Sc-, Ti-, Mn-, Co-and Zn-doped specimens show AFM state, while the V-, Cr-, Ni-and Cu-doped specimens show FM state. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Influence of Fe Substitution on Multiferrocity and Magneto-Dielectric Properties in CoCr2O4

Abstract:The present work reports the magnetic, dielectric, ferroelectric, magneto-dielectric and magneto-electric coupling/behavior of two polycrystalline compounds of Fe substituted CoCr2O4, i.e. Co(Cr0.95Fe0.05)2O4 and Co(Cr0.925Fe0.075)2O4. Dielectric anomalies observed at the onset of the collinear ferrimagnetic (FIM) transition (TC), compensation temperature (Tcomp), non-collinear magnetic spin-spiral transition (TS) and lock-in transition (TL), which depict the magnetodielectric coupling in the studied compounds. The ferroelectric transition has been observed around 24 and 23 K for Co(Cr0.95Fe0.05)2O4 and Co(Cr0.925Fe0.075)2O4, respectively. Significant change in magnitude of ferroelectric polarization by the application of magnetic field reveals the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in the studied compounds. The novel result of this work is that the nature of magnetodielectric coupling changes across the compensation temperature in the collinear FIM region. Based on the Landau theory, we deduce that the magnetodielectric coupling across Tcomp appears to originate from P2M2 term in the total free energy. Our results also suggest that the strength of the polarization scales with the application of the external magnetic field.

Abstract:We use combine high resolution neutron diffraction (HRPD) with density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the exchange striction at the Curie temperature (TC) of Fe2P and to examine the effect of boron and carbon doping on the P site. We find a significant contraction of the basal plane on heating through TC with a simultaneous increase of the c-axis that results in a small overall volume change of ~0.01%. At the magnetic transition the FeI-FeI distance drops significantly and becomes shorter than FeI-FeII . The shortest metal-metalloid (FeI-PI) distance also decreases sharply. Our DFT model reveals the importance of the latter as this structural change causes a redistribution of the FeI moment along the c-axis (Fe-P chain). We are able to understand the site preference of the dopants, the effect of which can be linked to the increased moment on the FeI-site, brought about by strong magneto-elasticity and changes in the electronic band structure.
Multiferroic and Phonon Properties of the Double Perovskite Pr2FeAlO6

Abstract:With the help of a microscopic model and Green's function technique, we studied the multiferroic and phonon properties of the recently reported new multiferroic Pr2FeAlO6 (PFAO) compound, which belongs to the double perovskite A2BB'O6 family. The magnetization decreases with the increase in temperature and disappears at the ferromagnetic Curie temperature TCFM. The polarization increases with the application of an external magnetic field, indicating strong magnetoelectric coupling and confirming the multiferroic behavior of PFAO. In the curves of dependence of the phonon energy and their damping with respect to temperature, a kink is observed at TCFM. This is due to the strong anharmonic spin–phonon interactions, which play a crucial role below TCFM and are frequently observed in other double perovskite compounds. Above TCFM, only anharmonic phonon–phonon coupling remains. The phonon mode is controlled by an external magnetic field.

Abstract:Electric, dielectric, and optical (band gap) properties of pure multiferroic as well as La- and Ni-doped SrFe12O19 (SFO) (at different sites) are investigated using a microscopic model and Green's function technique. The concentration dependence of the polarization P is considered for substitution of rare earths ions on the Sr sites. For a small La ion doping concentration, x = 0.1, La-doped SFO is ferroelectric, whereas for a larger doping concentration, for example x = 0.5, it is antiferroelectric. The real part of the dielectric constant ε increases with an increasing magnetic field h. ε decreases with an increasing frequency and La dopants. Therefore, La-doped SFO is suitable for microwave application with a low dielectric constant. The magnetic properties of pure SFO NPs are also studied. Ni doping at the Fe site of SFO leads to enhanced ferroelectric polarization and dielectric constant. The band gap decreases or increases by substitution of Ni or In ions on the Fe site, respectively. The results reveal that the tuned band gap of Ni-doped SFO makes it a crucial candidate for optoelectronic and solid oxide fuel cell applications.

Enhancement of optical absorption in multiferroic (1-x)PZT-xPFN thin films: Experiments and first-principles analysis

Abstract:Multiferroic compounds have gained research attention in the field of ferroelectric photovoltaics due to the presence of transition-metal d states from magnetic ions, which tend to reduce the bandgap value. In this work, 0.5Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 - 0.5Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 PZTFN0.5 thin films were synthesized using a sol-gel route to investigate the effect of iron doping on optical and multiferroic properties. For comparative analysis, the end-member compositions, Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) and Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 (PFN), were also synthesized under identical conditions. Our results revealed that the presence of Fe ions, besides inducing multiferroic behavior, effectively enhances the optical absorption of the material in the visible light region. Optical transitions at 3.0 eV (2.4 eV) and 2.7 eV (2.2 eV) for the direct (indirect) bandgap were determined for PZTFN0.5 and PFN, respectively, indicating that the absorption edges of the iron-containing films result more promising than PZT (Eg 3.6eV) for photovoltaic applications. Both PZTFN0.5 and PFN thin films exhibit multiferroic behavior at room temperature, with different electric and magnetic properties. While PZTFN0.5 presents saturated hysteresis loops with remanent polarization values around 10 uC/cm2 and magnetization of 1.6 emu/cm2, PFN displays significantly larger remanence (31 emu/cm2) but poorer ferroelectric properties due to the presence of leakage. Abstract:To explore the novel thin film with multiferroicity at room temperature, the bismuth-layer-structured Bi5Fe0.5Co0.5Ti3O15 (BFCT) thin films were prepared using chemical solution deposition technique. The microstructure, electric, and magnetic properties were investigated in BFCT film. A defined hysteresis loop of the BFCT film was obtained with the remnant polarization (2Pr) ∼ 31.7 μC/cm2 at 1 kHz under the electric field 300 kV/cm. To exclude contribution of the leakage current to polarization, we studied the dependence of hysteresis loops on the measuring frequency in the range from 100 Hz to 2 kHz and made the positive-up-negative-down (PUND) measurements in BFCT thin film. Both the results indicate the intrinsic ferroelectric property, and the leakage current does not play a big role in BFCT film. Meanwhile, the ɛ-V curve can also support the natural ferroelectricity in the BFCT film. We also found that the BFCT film shows weak ferromagnetism with the saturated magnetization (Ms) ∼2.6 emu/cm3. Furthermore, the magneto-dielectric effect was observed with MDC ∼ 0.39% at the frequency 100 kHz. The origin of weak ferromagnetism and the magneto-dielectric effect was discussed.

Abstract:Using a microscopic model and Green's function theory, we calculated the magnetization and band-gap energy in ion-doped LiMPO4 (LMPO), where M = Fe, Ni, Co, Mn. Ion doping, such as with Nb, Ti, or Al ions at the Li site, induces weak ferromagnetism in LiFePO4. Substituting Li with ions of a smaller radius, such as Nb, Ti, or Al, creates compressive strain, resulting in increased exchange interaction constants and a decreased band-gap energy, Eg, in the doped material. Notably, Nb ion doping at the Fe site leads to a more pronounced decrease in Eg compared to doping at the Li site, potentially enhancing conductivity. Similar trends in Eg reduction are observed across other LMPO4 compounds. Conversely, substituting ions with a larger ionic radius than Fe, such as Zn and Cd, causes an increase in Eg.

Tunable dimensional crossover and magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Fe$_2$P-based alloys

Abstract:Electronic structure calculations are used to examine the magnetic properties of Fe$_2$P-based alloys and the mechanisms through which the Curie temperature and magnetocrystalline anisotropy can be optimized for specific applications. It is found that at elevated temperatures the magnetic interaction in pure Fe$_2$P develops a pronounced two-dimensional character due to the suppression of the magnetization in one of the sublattices, but the interlayer coupling is very sensitive to band filling and structural distortions. This feature suggests a natural explanation of the observed sharp enhancement of the Curie temperature by alloying with multiple elements, such as Co, Ni, Si, and B. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy is also tunable by electron doping, reaching a maximum near the electron count of pure Fe$_2$P. These findings enable the optimization of the alloy content, suggesting co-alloying of Fe$_2$P with Co (or Ni) and Si as a strategy for maximizing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy at and above room temperature.

Abstract:The crystal structure and magnetic properties of AlFe2-xMnxB2 (x = 0-0.5) compounds were investigated. With increasing Mn content, the magnetic properties of these compounds evolve gradually and the lattice parameters change continuously: Curie temperature (T-c) decreases from 312 K (x = 0) to 220 K (x = 0.5) and a new phase transition from the ferromagnetic state (FM) to spin-glass state (SPG) appears upon cooling. The lattice shrinks in the ab plane while it expands in the c direction. The formation of re-entrant SPG around 50 K was studied via temperature dependent ac and dc magnetization as well as the initial magnetization curves in 5 K. The reason for this glass state is the triangular configuration of magnetic atoms and the antiferromagnetic interactions introduced by Mn substitutions. The Curie transition leads to a conventional magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The Mn doping leads to a decrease in the MCE near room temperature, but there is a plane in entropy change (Delta S) for the x = 0.1 compound under low field which makes these compounds good candidates to produce composites used for magnetic refrigeration application in a wide temperature span.

Abstract:The magnetic and dielectric properties of the ferroelectromagnet (FEM) Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2) O3(PFN) single crystals have been investigated. Anomalies in the dielectric constant as a function of temperature have been observed near its Neel temperature of ~ 143 K, which are indicative of the so-called magnetoelectric coupling between the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic orders in this compound. It is demonstrated that a weak magnetic transition appeared at the temperature a little below the Neel temperature, which confirms the earlier prediction from the Monte Carlo simulation in a qualitative sense. The magnetic hysteresis measurement proves that there does exists a weak magnetic order in PFN crystal below its Neel temperature.

Abstract:In order to break the contradictory requirements of the outer shell electronic structure for multiferroism in oxide perovskites, multiferroic fluorides were selected to be studied, in which the ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism may both come from the same magnetic ions. Pure phase Ba5Fe3F19−δ powders were prepared by solid state reaction. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results indicate the deficiency of Fe. The mixed valence states of Fe3+ and Fe2+ are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The observation of amplitude and phase hysteresis loops measured by piezoresponse force microscopy indicates the ferroelectricity in Ba5Fe3F19−δ. The temperature dependent magnetization curves show a continuous increase with decreasing temperature, without clear phase transition. However, the temperature dependent inverse magnetic susceptibility (χ) follows the Curie–Weiss law above 150 K with Curie–Weiss temperature of −55 K, suggesting predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions between the Fe ions. The χT decreases with the temperature decreasing from 300 K, indicating the onset of weak antiferromagnetic interaction from temperature above 300 K. No hysteresis loop was observed for the magnetic dependent magnetization curves down to 5 K, indicating the lacking of long-range ordering. A peak was observed in the temperature dependent dielectric constant and dielectric loss at around 257 K, which was strongly suppressed by the application of 5 T magnetic field. The observation of magnetocapacitance effect confirms the magnetoelectric coupling, which originates from the magnetic and structural coupling.
Effect of Cr3+ doped on electronic and magnetic properties of SrFe12O19 by first-principles study

Abstract:This theoretical work presents the electronic and magnetic properties of Cr doped SrFe12O19 using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. An improvement in the magnetic properties of SrFe12O19 is predicted when doped with the Cr3+ ion. It was found that the magnetic Cr3+ ion preferentially replaces Fe3+ ion at 2a, 4f1, and 12k sites. The calculation demonstrates that if Cr ion occupies the 4f1 site, a total magnetization of 52.920 emu/g is obtained. On the other hand, SrFe11.5Cr0.5O19 behaves as a semiconductor when Cr occupies the 2a and 12k sites while behaves like half-metal when Cr occupies the 4f1 site. The higher magnetization, identified for the SrFe11.5Cr0.5O19 compound, provides unique qualities in the applications of permanent magnets and/or related devices like spintronics and magnetic semiconductors.

Abstract:Multiferroic heterostructures have gained in recent years a renewed role in spintronic applications due to their possibility in controlling the magnetic properties via interfacial coupling by exploiting the ferroelectric response to various external stimuli. Whereas the main mechanisms ruling the converse magnetoelectric coupling are considered as established, the research on how to optimize the ferroelectric properties is an active field. In particular the complex phase diagram of [Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3]-x[PbTiO3] (PMN-xPT) single crystals, that present relaxor ferroelectric and photovoltaic properties, deserves further investigation. For instance, crystalline quality and thermal stability of the ferroelectric domains in heterostructures need assessment. Here we show how, by thermal annealing over the ferroelectric Curie temperature and then cooling PMN-0.4PT/Fe heterostructures in inert atmosphere the domain population is significantly modified, evolving from a highly disordered, mostly out-of-plane domain population, to improved crystallinity and prevalent in-plane oriented domains. Upon further annealing, the domain population switches back to prevalent out-of-plane orientation suggesting that intermediate annealing steps can freeze PMN-0.4PT domain population in a metastable configuration. The structural analysis was carried out by combining micro-Raman and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. In the three states the magnetic properties of interfacial Fe thin film are affected by the ferroelectric configurations as a consequence of changing interfacial strain, evolving from an isotropic behavior to an anisotropic one and back.

Abstract:BaMF4 (M=Fe, Co, Ni and Mn) family are typical multiferroic materials, having antiferromagnetism at around liquid nitrogen temperature. In this work, polycrystalline BaFeF4 has been prepared by solid state reaction. The slight deficiency of Fe leads to the coexistence of valence states of +2 and +3, facilitating the electrons to hop between the neighboring Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions through the middle F- ion, leading to the strong double exchange interaction with weak ferromagnetism above room temperature. A bifurcation at about 170 K between the zero-field-cooled and field-cooled temperature dependent magnetization curves indicates the onset of 2-dimensional antiferromagnetism, which is completed at about 125 K with the sudden drop of magnetization. Despite the fact of type-I multiferroic, its magnetoelectricity can be evidenced by the pyroelectric current, which shows a peak starting at about 170 K and finishing at about 125 K. The saturated ferroelectric polarization change of around 34 μC/m2 is observed, which is switchable by the reversed poling electric field and decreases to about 30 μC/m2 under a magnetic field of 90 kOe. This magnetoelectricity can be qualitatively reproduced by first-principles calculations. Our results represent substantial progress to search for high-temperature multiferroics in ferroelectric fluorides.
