Abstract:Background: The interplay between teaching engagement and performance has garnered attention in both theoretical and empirical research, primarily due to its influence on student academic achievement, teacher well-being, and the realization of institutional goals. This is especially pertinent in the realm of preschool education, where the scope of learning extends beyond academic content to encompass the broader socialization of children. Drawing from Affective Neuroscience research, this study investigates the role of affective tendencies as mediators in the relationship between work engagement and job performance. Objective: The primary aim of this research is to examine a chain mediation model that hypothesizes the predictive role of teacher engagement. This model posits the intermediary influence of four basic emotions—CARING, SEEKING, ANGER, and FEAR—followed by the mediating effect of job satisfaction on teacher job performance. Method: The study utilized a sample of 842 Chinese preschool teachers. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, employing a time-lagged design. The analysis was conducted using Model 80 of the PROCESS Macros. Results: The findings reveal that both positive and negative emotions significantly predict teachers' job satisfaction. However, job satisfaction does not influence job performance. The analysis confirmed the direct and total effects of teacher engagement, as well as the indirect effects, particularly through the positive emotion of Caring. Implications: The results are instrumental in informing and refining interventions designed to enhance teacher engagement and performance, underscoring the importance of emotional factors in the educational environment.

Abstract:For high-intensity muscular exercise, the time-to-exhaustion (t) increases as a predictable and hyperbolic function of decreasing power (P) or velocity (V ). This relationship is highly conserved across diverse species and different modes of exercise and is well described by two parameters: the "critical power" (CP or CV), which is the asymptote for power or velocity, and the curvature constant (W') of the relationship such that t = W'/(P - CP). CP represents the highest rate of energy transduction (oxidative ATP production, V˙O2) that can be sustained without continuously drawing on the energy store W' (composed in part of anaerobic energy sources and expressed in kilojoules). The limit of tolerance (time t) occurs when W' is depleted. The CP concept constitutes a practical framework in which to explore mechanisms of fatigue and help resolve crucial questions regarding the plasticity of exercise performance and muscular systems physiology. This brief review presents the practical and theoretical foundations for the CP concept, explores rigorous alternative mathematical approaches, and highlights exciting new evidence regarding its mechanistic bases and its broad applicability to human athletic performance.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine Chinese college students' engagement and satisfaction with their university learning experience. In particular, the study focused on emotional engagement and how it was associated with student satisfaction. Nationally representative data from the 2012 China College Student Survey (CCSS) which drew from 55 higher education institutions (N = 67,182; 45.6% female) indicated that Chinese students had high levels of emotional engagement. Emotional engagement positively predicted student satisfaction and also moderated the effect of cognitive engagement on satisfaction. Educational implications are discussed.

Abstract:Background: In the evolving landscape of Chinese education, understanding the factors that influence the emotional health and engagement of English language learners is increasingly vital. Against this backdrop, our study delves into how teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, teachers' harmony, and peer support impact these key educational outcomes. Aim: This study investigates the roles of teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, teachers' harmony, and peer support in influencing the emotional health and engagement of English language learners in China. Method: Involving a diverse sample of 68 English Language Teachers and their 389 students from various Chinese universities, the study leverages a convenience sampling method. Results: Key findings indicate that students' emotional health is predominantly influenced by peer support, while student engagement is significantly affected by a combination of teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, peer support, and teachers' harmony. These outcomes highlight the importance of both teacher behavior and peer relationships in educational settings, underscoring their crucial roles in enhancing student well-being and engagement. The study's methodology, incorporating a diverse sample from multiple educational institutions and a comprehensive analytical approach, offers robust insights. However, the limitations of convenience sampling and reliance on self-reported data necessitate a careful interpretation of the findings. Implications: Implications from this research are vital for educational policy and practice, emphasizing the need for interventions that enhance teacher-student relationships and foster supportive peer environments. This study adds to the body of knowledge on factors influencing emotional health and engagement among English language learners, advocating for a comprehensive approach in educational strategies and interventions.

Abstract:In recent years, many studies have been done to identify the factors that affect teacher emotions at schools. However, the empirical evidence on how teachers’ emotions influence students’ outcomes and performance is not extensive. Against this background, this study explored the correlation between teacher EI and student academic achievement and possible mechanisms may lie in this relationship. A sample of 365 Chinese teachers from 25 public middle schools participated in this study by completing measurements of teacher EI, teacher work engagement, and teacher self-efficacy. The student academic achievement was assessed by the grades of the previous term (February to June 2020) reported by the students. The results indicated that teacher work engagement partially mediated the path from teacher EI and student academic achievement. Moderated mediation further showed that teachers with high self-efficacy had a more significant positive impact on the relationship between teacher work engagement and student academic achievement than teachers with low self-efficacy. The limitations of this study were also discussed.

Abstract:Given the global challenge of increasing teacher attrition and turnover rates, the exploration of factors and mechanisms that improve teachers’ organizational commitment has become a pivotal topic in educational research. In this context, the present study examines the influence of teachers’ emotional intelligence on their organizational commitment, with a specific inquiry into the mediating role of teachers’ psychological well-being and the moderating role of principal transformational leadership, as informed by the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions and the trait activation theory. We verified this study’s hypotheses based on 768 valid questionnaires collected from Chinese primary and secondary school teachers. The results reveal that teachers’ emotional intelligence can predict their organizational commitment both directly and indirectly through the mediating role of psychological well-being. Additionally, principal transformational leadership amplifies the positive effect of teachers’ emotional intelligence on psychological well-being and, subsequently, organizational commitment. These findings theoretically deepen our understanding of the psychological pathways and the boundary conditions linking teachers’ emotional intelligence to their organizational commitment, while also offering valuable practical implications for building a stable and effective teaching workforce.
Relations between perceived teacher support and academic achievement: positive emotions and learning engagement as mediators

Abstract:This study examines the relationship between perceived teacher support and academic achievement and the mediating role played by positive emotions and learning engagement in a sample of 497 middle school students from three middle schools in eastern China. Participants’ ages ranged from 12 to 15 years old, with a mean of 13.19 (SD = 0.688). The results show that: (1) positive emotions mediate the relationship between perceived teacher support and academic achievement; (2) learning engagement also mediates the relationship between perceived teacher support and academic achievement; and (3) positive emotions and learning engagement show a chain-mediating effect in the relationship between perceived teacher support and academic achievement. The findings not only reveal the mediating role of positive emotions and learning engagement between perceived teacher support and academic achievement but are also important for Chinese teachers to help students improve their academic achievement.

Abstract:Abstract Although teacher emotion has been recognized as one important factor affecting teaching, learning, and teachers’ wellbeing, less attention has been paid to its role in school management. As an emotional perspective of explaining organizational behavior, the Affective Event Theory was used to uncover the emotional mechanism of the associations between leader feedback quality and teacher voice behavior. A sample of 491 teachers from 27 primary and secondary schools participated in this study. A moderated mediation model was used in data analysis. The result demonstrated that: First, leader feedback quality was positively associated with teacher voice behavior. Second, teacher positive emotion mediated the relationship between leader feedback quality and teacher voice behavior while teacher negative emotion played a masking effect. Third, leader feedback accuracy moderated the relationship between leader feedback quality and teacher negative emotion.

Abstract:Teaching endeavors to improve learners' well-being and educational engagement, as both factors contribute to progress facilitated by the integration of PP into the learning procedure, enhancing success in the academic cycle. Some studies have affirmed the significant effect of teacher support on learners' academic performance. Nevertheless, the precise mechanism linking teacher support, particularly emotional support, to student learning remains unclear. This research was structured to scrutinize the mediating influence of learner motivation in the connection between perceived emotional support and learners' engagement and well-being, employing the perspective of, a widely acknowledged psychological theory that centers on human motivation and the determinants influencing individuals to participate in specific behaviors, including learning. Consequently, the objective of this research was to assess the relationship between perceived emotional support, well-being, and student engagement with particular attention to the mediating role of motivation among 590 college students in Chinese universities. The results of the Structural Equation Model (SEM) indicate approximately 72% of the variations in perceived emotional support, well-being, engagement, and motivation. These relationships are significant at the 95% confidence level, indicating the robustness of the model in capturing the intricate dynamics among the variables within the educational context. Consequently, several implications are suggested for teachers, learners, teacher trainers, and other academic stakeholders.

Abstract:Introduction This study investigated the influence of teacher–student relationship on Chinese high students' academic motivation for the ideological and political subject and the parallel mediating roles of positive and negative academic emotions on this influence. Method The participants of this study were 425 Chinese high school students. This study measured teacher–student relationship, academic motivation, and academic emotions through several self-reported questionnaires. Structural equation models were used to analyze data and investigate the direct and indirect influence of teacher–student relationship on Chinese high school students' academic motivation for the ideological and political subject. Results Teacher–student relationship had a significant, positive, and direct impact on Chinese high school students' academic motivation for the ideological and political subject. Moreover, positive and negative academic emotions, in parallel, mediated the relationship between these two factors. Discussion This study demonstrates the important influence of teacher–student relationships on Chinese high school students' academic motivation for the ideological and political subject. A positive teacher–student relationship can directly increase students' academic motivation for this subject and indirectly enhance their motivation by generating positive academic emotions. Therefore, teachers should express care for their students, make friends with them, and be their partners in learning and life. Additionally, teachers need to pay close attention to students' academic emotions and provide them emotional support so that they can develop positive academic emotions while learning, and strive to establish and maintain a good teacher–student relationship.

The impact of teachers' emotional support on EFL learners' online learning engagement: The role of enjoyment and boredom

Abstract:Learning engagement is acknowledged as a vital proxy for evaluating the quality of online education, and teachers' emotional support, as an essential component of social support within the educational environment, positively influences learners' online learning engagement. The present study draws on Person-environment Interaction Model and Broaden-and-Build Theory to investigate the effect of teachers' emotional support on online learning engagement for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and the mediating roles of academic emotions, specifically enjoyment and boredom. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 411 Chinese college EFL learners who were selected through convenience sampling. The results revealed that teachers' emotional support was not a direct predictor of online learning engagement but indirectly affected it through the mediating role of enjoyment and the serial mediating roles of both enjoyment and boredom. Additionally, the mediating effect of enjoyment was much stronger than the chain mediating effect of enjoyment and boredom. Teachers should pay more attention to facilitating learners' enjoyment and relieving their boredom, which would enhance the positive impact of teachers' emotional support on online learning engagement. These results have some pedagogical implications for improving students' online English learning engagement and enhancing the quality of sustainable online education.

Abstract:Emotional labor plays an essential role in school leadership and teaching, as principals and teachers undergo complex interactions with students, colleagues, and parents. Although researchers have realized the influence of leaders' behaviors on followers' emotions in management and educational contexts, the relationship between leadership behaviors, teachers' emotional labor, and related organizational outcomes has been underexplored. As leadership and emotional labor are situated and influenced by cultural contexts, the current study focused on the relationship between teachers' emotional labor strategies, multidimensional teacher commitment, and paternalistic leadership, a unique leadership type rooted in Confucianism. Paternalistic leadership is a style that combines strong authority with fatherly benevolence, which is prevalent in East Asia and the Middle East. A sample of 419 teachers was randomly selected to participate in a survey. The results showed that principals' authoritarian leadership behaviors had negative influences on teachers' commitment to the profession and commitment to the school. Benevolent leadership had positive effects on teachers' commitment to students, commitment to the profession, and commitment to the school. Teachers' deep acting played positive mediating effects, while surface acting was a negative mediator. The results imply that school leaders could properly exert parent-like leadership practices to facilitate teacher commitment through managing teachers' emotions.

Abstract:Teacher's emotions have been shown to be highly important in the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning. There is a recognized need to examine the essential role of teacher's emotions in students' academic achievement. However, the influence of teacher's displays of emotions on students' outcomes in small-group interaction activities, especially in the online environment, has received little attention in prior research. The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between teacher's different emotional displays and students' perceptions of the teacher's competence, as well as students' collaborative feelings and productivity in online small-group discussions. Using a three-level between-subjects design, 74 participants were randomly divided into four-member groups comprising a teacher and three other participants. All the groups were asked to discuss an open-ended realistic problem using online software, during which the teacher's display of emotions varied (positive vs. negative vs. neutral). The participants' self-reported questionnaire data (perception of the teacher's competence, students' feeling of pleasure, collaborative satisfaction, and willingness to continue collaborating) and productivity (number of effective ideas expressed within a given time) were measured to compare the participants who were exposed to different emotional displays. As expected, the results showed that the participants who received the teacher's positive emotional display reported that they experienced higher levels of pleasure during the task. However, in contrast to our expectations, those under the negative emotional display condition showed a significantly higher level of productivity in the group task. In addition, compared to emotional display, the participants' perceptions of the teacher's competence were rated significantly higher under the neutral condition, and they reported higher levels of collaborative satisfaction and greater willingness to continue collaborating with their group. The findings have the potential benefit of informing educational practice on whether teachers should display their emotions in a small-group discussion or how they should display emotions following adjustment for the relative aim of the teaching activities.

Abstract:Exploring the influence of positive learning emotion on college students' classroom learning effect facilitates fully understanding college students' online learning effect and emotional state, and is beneficial to improving students' learning quality and teachers' teaching quality. At present, few scholars have summative evaluation of students' classroom learning effect from the perspective of students' learning emotions and prove from the perspective of theory and practice that good emotional state is an important influencing factor to improve college students' classroom learning effect. Therefore, this article fully considers the positive learning emotion, and makes a research on the prediction of college students' classroom learning effect. Firstly, this article defines the behavior data of students in the online learning process based on learning emotions, and studies the correlation between college students' classroom learning behaviors based on Hawkes process. Then, based on the learning participation under the influence of different learning emotions, the online learning effect of students is quantified, and the prediction model of students' classroom learning is constructed by combining the learning behavior sequence analysis results represented by Hawkes process and the characteristic information of students themselves and courses. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the model, and the significance test results confirm the positive effect of positive emotion on learning effect.
Linking teacher support to achievement emotion profile: the mediating role of basic psychological need satisfaction

Abstract:The current study used a person-centered approach to explore the co-occurrence of college students' achievement emotions. It also examined the impact of teacher support on achievement emotion profiles and the mediating effect of need satisfaction. A total of 866 college students participated in the survey. A robust three-step latent profile analysis was employed to analyze the data. Four profiles of achievement emotions were identified: moderate mixed emotions, the blends of high positive emotions, the blends of moderate positive emotions, and high mixed emotions. Higher perceived teacher support was associated with a greater likelihood of being classified into the blends of moderate positive emotion profile or the blends of high positive emotion profile. Moreover, basic psychological need satisfaction mediated the relationship between teacher support and the four emotion profiles. Our findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the role of teacher support in shaping achievement emotion profiles, helping to broaden the application of self-determination theory to explain the mechanism by which external support influences emotion profiles.

Abstract:The key purpose of this research was to investigate the mediating role of academics’ self-efficacy in teaching and research (termed ‘academic self-efficacy’) in the relationship between emotions in teaching and teaching styles. Two hundred and thirty-two academics from 13 higher educational institutions in Shanghai, mainland China, responded to three self-report inventories, each assessing academics’ emotions in teaching, efficacy in teaching and research, and teaching styles, respectively. Results showed that academics’ emotions in teaching statistically predicted teaching styles, both directly and indirectly – through academic self-efficacy. Findings have enriched the literature on emotions in teaching, that on teaching styles, and that on teacher/academic self-efficacy. Practical implications are proposed in relation to academics and university senior managers.

Abstract:Since the coming of Positive Psychology in the field of second language acquisition (SLA), the significance of emotion, especially positive emotion, has been well recognized by researchers. Educational research has indicated that both emotion and engagement play fundamental roles in learning process and psychological wellbeing, but research on their relationship is scant in SLA. The present study contributed to the development of Positive Psychology in SLA by investigating the relationships between achievement emotions, behavioral engagement, and self-reported English achievements. 633 students from four senior high schools in China participated in the study. Data collected through questionnaires revealed: (1) Participants reported a medium to high level of foreign language enjoyment (FLE), foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA), and behavioral engagement; females had a higher level of FLE and behavioral engagement than males; the participants reported more anxiety and less enjoyment than western samples; (2) significant correlations were found between FLE, FLCA, behavioral engagement, and self-reported achievement; (3) significant mediating effects of behavioral engagement were found between both achievement emotions and self-reported achievement, and the mediating effect of engagement was stronger between FLCA and self-reported achievement. The findings extended the nomological network of achievement emotions, developed our insights into the complex relationships between emotions, learner engagement and language achievement, and revealed the mediating effects of behavioral engagement. Finally, directions for future study and implications for foreign language educators were provided.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between learning engagement and academic self-efficacy towards academic achievement among normal college students in China. The method of this research is a descriptive survey conducted in the field. Students’ statistical community from Shangrao Normal University in Jiangxi Province, China that their number is about 15,000 people, and 1,507 people were selected as a sample by simple random method. Out of these participants, 471 were malearning engagement (31.3%) and 1036 were femalearning engagement (68.7%) students. This study used Learning Engagement Scale-Student (UWES-S), Academic Self-efficacy Questionnaire (ASEQ) and academic achievement assessment as instruments. The data was analyzed using t-tests, one-way ANOVA and regression analysis. The results indicate that there is no significant gender difference observed in learning engagement or academic self-efficacy. However, when considering different grades, learning engagement demonstrates a significant disparity with the lowest level found among Grade 2 students, which significantly differs from Grade 1, Grade 3, and Grade 4 respectively. On the other hand, no significant differences are observed in academic self-efficacy across different grades. Furthermore, there are notable learning engagement variances between students with varying levels of achievement regarding both learning engagement and academic self-efficacy. Regression analysis reveals that learning engagement directly influences academic achievement while academic self-efficacy acts as a mediating factor for academic achievement. The research results confirmed the significant correlation between students’ learning engagement, academic self-efficacy, and academic achievement; learning engagement has a direct impact on academic achievement, meanwhile academic self-efficacy mediates the relationship between learning engagement and academic achievement. Driven and facilitated by the power of the interactive field, the participants can reduce the sense of inferiority, overcome the fear of feeling and enhance the ability of introspection and self-efficacy.

Abstract:Learning engagement is recognized as a critical indicator in the evaluation of online courses, as it is related to the quality of online education and students' performance. Prior studies have found that interactions among learners, instructors, and content were associated with students' learning engagement, yet gaps remain in identifying the internal mechanisms. To contribute to this gap in the knowledge, this study uses self-report survey to examine the mediating roles of online learning self-efficacy and academic emotions in the relationship between interaction and learning engagement in online learning. Data were collected from 474 college students who participated in online courses in China. Multiple mediation analysis showed that (1) learner-content interaction and learner-learner interaction, but not learner-instructor interaction, could predict online learning engagement; (2) online learning self-efficacy and academic emotions (enjoyment; boredom) mediated the link between interactions (learner-content interaction and learner-learner interaction) and learning engagement; (3) both learner-content interaction and learner-learner interaction could predict learning engagement through the sequential mediation of online learning self-efficacy and academic emotions (enjoyment; boredom). This research sheds light on the internal mechanism of different interactions on learners' learning engagement, and provides important theoretical and practical implications for promoting learners' learning engagement in the online learning context.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has posed an unprecedented threat to the resilience of higher education worldwide, and university students had been thrust overnight into the emergency online learning. The end of COVID-19 pandemic is in sight, however, teachers and students have been forced to live with its disruptive effects indefinitely. Online teaching has been regarded as a panacea for maintaining the resilience of higher education during COVID-19 pandemic, it is significantly important to reflect on students’ learning experiences and learning gains in online classes to improve future online teaching quality. Using a sample of 3514 participants located in the Chinese university context, this study aimed to investigate the determinants that affect students’ learning gains in online learning anchored by self-determination theory. The results indicated a significant positive impact of teachers’ emotional support in predicting students’ learning gains in online classes, and also revealed the positive mediating effect of students’ basic psychological needs satisfaction in bridging these two variables. Moreover, the findings highlighted the sophisticated role of students’ achievement motivation interacting with teachers’ emotional support to influence students’ basic psychological needs satisfaction and learning gains. Implications regarding how to improve undergraduate students’ learning gains in the future’s online teaching were discussed.
