Abstract:A 80-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of appetite loss, dry cough, and dyspnea on exertion. Chest X-ray film showed massive right pleural effusion. On physical examination, the right thorax was dull to percussion, and breath sounds of the right lung field were diminished. Examination of the cardiovascular system was unremarkable. Hepatosplenomegaly and ascites were not evident. The character of the pleural fluid was transudative. Cytological findings were negative and culture of the pleural fluid was normal. First, the pleural fluid was diminished by thoracic drainage. But, after the cessation of drainage, the pleural fluid soon reaccumulated. Abdominal ultrasonography showed typical liver cirrhosis pattern without ascites. An intraperitoneal injection of 99mTc-sulfur colloid was followed by positive uptake of radioactivity in the right pleural cavity from 1 hour after the injection, demonstrating the existence of a direct perito-pleural communication. Thus, the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis presenting with right pleural fluid, without ascites was made. This case indicates that the absence of ascites cannot exclude cirrhosis as the etiologic cause of pleural effusion.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a deterministic mixed-integer programming model to schedule weekly production quantities for semiconductor manufacturing in order to meet forecasted demand over a six-month planning horizon. The model considers facility capacities, facility qualifying, limits on the number of facilities to use, and unit-level minimum inventory requirements. Model validity is demonstrated with a simple test case based on an industry dataset. A case study is then presented using actual industry data. Minimum inventory requirement levels are varied and compared to results obtained from traditional safety stock policies.

Abstract:SummaryPaenibacillus sp. F6‐B70 was selected from several dozens of isolates with activity against methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus using a 16S rDNA‐based screening method. F6‐B70 contained polyketide synthase (PKS) and non‐ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) clusters in its genome revealed by PCR amplification of conserved adenylation and ketosynthase (KS) domains. Phylogenetic data suggested that the strain hosts trans‐AT PKSs and their product may be a branched molecule. An antibiotic was subsequently isolated from the methanol extract of F6‐B70 cells. The molecular formula of the antibiotic was deduced to be C33H50NaO6 ([M + Na]+, m/z 565.3505) by analysis of electrospray ionization mass spectral data. Elucidation of the structure by nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy revealed that the active compound, paenimacrolidin (PAM), was a novel 22‐membered macrolide with side‐chains. The new antibiotic, mainly as a bacteriostatic agent, inhibits a couple of multidrug‐resistant Staphylococcus sp. strains. The antibiotic capacity of PAM was compromised by its instability, which can be overcome significantly with addition of an anti‐oxidant. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the isolation of an active macrolide from paenibacilli, which may be a promising source of novel antibiotics.
Development of a Novel Antibacterial Peptide, PAM-5, via Combination of Phage Display Selection and Computer-Assisted Modification

Abstract:Antibacterial peptides (ABPs) have been proposed as potential candidates for alternative antibacterial agents due to the extensive dissemination of antibiotic resistance. However, ABP isolation from natural resources can be tedious without consistent yield. Moreover, many natural ABPs are not developed for clinical application due to potential toxicity to mammalian cells. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a potent ABP with minimal toxicity via phage display selection followed by computer-assisted modification. Briefly, a 12-mer phage-displayed peptide library was used to isolate peptides that bound to the cell surface of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with high affinity. The affinity-selected peptide with the highest selection frequency was modified to PAM-5 (KWKWRPLKRKLVLRM) with enhanced antibacterial features by using an online peptide database. Using in vitro microbroth dilution assay, PAM-5 was shown to be active against a panel of Gram-negative bacteria and selected Gram-positive bacteria. Interestingly, the peptide was stable in human plasma by exhibiting a similar bactericidal effect via ex vivo assay. Scanning electron microscopy and SYTOX Green uptake assay revealed that PAM-5 was able to cause membrane disruption and permeabilization of the bacteria. Additionally, the peptide was also able to bind to bacterial DNA as demonstrated by gel retardation assay. In the time-kill assay, PAM-5 was shown to kill the bacteria rapidly in 10 min. More importantly, PAM-5 was non-cytotoxic to Vero cells and non-haemolytic to human erythrocytes at all concentrations tested for the antibacterial assays. Thus, this study showed that the combination of phage display screening and computer-assisted modification could be used to develop potent novel ABPs, and PAM-5 derived from these approaches is worth to be further elucidated for its potential clinical use.

Abstract:While the antibiotic era has come and gone, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) hold promise as novel therapies to treat multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens in an age where the threat of multidrug resistance escalates worldwide. Here, we report the bactericidal properties of NuriPep 1653, a novel 22 mer and non-modified peptide. NuriPep 1653 was identified within the sequence of the non-antimicrobial P54 protein, which is involved in nutrient reservoir activity in Pisum sativum. Total bacterial clearance of Acinetobacter baumannii cells (1 × 108 cells/mL) was observed using only 4 × MIC (48 μg/mL) of NuriPep 1653 after just 20 min of treatment. We uncovered a synergistic interaction between NuriPep 1653 and another antimicrobial peptide, colistin. The MIC of NuriPep 1653 and colistin dropped from 12 and 8 μg/mL to 2 and 1 μg/mL, respectively, when they were combined. NuriPep 1653 exhibits no cytotoxicity in different human cell lines and has a low propensity to induce bacterial resistance in a colistin resistant clinical isolate of A. baumannii. The existence of these peptides embedded in proteins unearths potentially new classes of antimicrobials with activity against clinically relevant pathogens. Our findings push the boundaries of traditional peptide discovery and represent a leading edge for natural bioactive compounds which may have a common existence in nature but remain unexposed.

Abstract:Within 1 h 15-(p-iodophenyl)-pentadecanoic acid (p-IPPA) can easily be labeled with 123I by iodine-isotope exchange. In contrast to the electrophilic aromatic substitution procedure this method enables a 95% radiochemical yield. The so formed p-123IPPA can be used without the application of any complicated separation techniques. By comparison with commercially available 17-[123I]iodoheptadecanoic acid (123IHA) p-123IPPA shows a remarkably higher uptake in a rabbit heart. Additionally the background activity of p-123IPPA proved to be lower than that measured with 123IHA. p-123IPPA thus indicating its suitability for routine applications in nuclear medical heart diagnosis.

Abstract:The emergence and prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have posed a serious threat to public health. Of particular concern are methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and blaNDM, mcr-1 and tet(X)-positive Gram-negative pathogens. The fact that few new antibiotics have been approved in recent years exacerbates this global crisis, thus, new alternatives are urgently needed. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) originated from host defense peptides with a wide range of sources and multiple functions, are less prone to achieve resistance. All these characteristics laid the foundation for AMPs to become potential antibiotic candidates. In this study, we revealed that peptide WW307 displayed potent antibacterial and bactericidal activity against MDR bacteria, including MRSA and Gram-negative bacteria carrying blaNDM-5, mcr-1 or tet(X4). In addition, WW307 exhibited great biofilm inhibition and eradication activity. Safety and stability experiments showed that WW307 had a strong resistance against various physiological conditions and displayed relatively low toxicity. Mechanistic experiments showed that WW307 resulted in membrane damage by selectively targeting bacterial membrane-specific components, including lipopolysaccharide (LPS), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and cardiolipin (CL). Moreover, WW307 dissipated membrane potential and triggered the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Collectively, these results demonstrated that WW307 represents a promising candidate for combating MDR pathogens.

Abstract:The overuse of traditional antibiotics has resulted in bacterial resistance and seriously compromised the therapeutic efficacy of traditional antibiotics, making the exploration of new antimicrobials particularly important. Several studies have shown that bioactive peptides have become an important source of new antimicrobial drugs due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial action and lack of susceptibility to resistance. In this study, a novel bioactive peptide Nigrosin-6VL was characterised from the skin secretion of the golden cross band frog, Odorrana andersonii, by using the 'shotgun' cloning strategy. Modifications on the Rana Box of Nigrosin-6VL revealed its critical role in antimicrobial functions. The peptide analogue, 2170-2R, designed to preserve the Rana Box structure while enhancing cationicity, exhibited improved therapeutic efficacy, particularly against Gram-negative bacteria, with a therapeutic value of 45.27. Synergistic studies demonstrated that 2170-2R inherits the synergistic antimicrobial activities of the parent peptides and effectively enhances the antimicrobial capacity of cefepime and gentamicin against both planktonic cells and biofilms. Specifically, 2170-2R can synergise effectively with cefepime and gentamicin against different strains of P. aeruginosa biofilms. Consequently, 2170-2R holds promise as a potent antimicrobial agent developed to combat infections induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Abstract:Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising therapeutic alternatives compared to conventional antibiotics for the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections. However, the application of the overwhelming majority of AMPs is limited because of the high toxicity and high manufacturing costs. Amphibian skin secretion has been proven to be a promising source for the discovery and development of novel AMPs. Herein, we discovered a novel AMP from the skin secretion of Odorrana schmackeri, and designed the analogues by altering the key factors, including conformation, net charge and amphipathicity, to generate short AMPs with enhanced therapeutic efficacy. All the peptides were chemically synthesised, followed by evaluating their biological activity, stability and cytotoxicity. OSd, OSe and OSf exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial effects, especially OSf, which presented the highest therapeutic index for the tested bacteria. Moreover, these peptides displayed good stability. The results from scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies, indicated that brevinin-OS, OSd, OSe and OSf possessed rapid bactericidal ability by disturbing membrane permeability and causing the release of cytoplasmic contents. In addition, OSd, OSe and OSf dramatically decreased the mortality of waxworms acutely infected with MRSA. Taken together, these data suggested that a balance between positive charge, degrees of α-helicity and hydrophobicity, is necessary for maintaining antimicrobial activity, and these data successfully contributed to the design of short AMPs with significant bactericidal activity and cell selectivity.

Abstract:With the increasing number of drug-resistant bacteria, there is an urgent need for new antimicrobial agents, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which exist in the human non-specific immune system, are one of the most promising candidates. It is an effective optimization strategy to modify antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) according to the distribution of amino acids and hydrophobic characteristics. The addition of bacterial pheromones to the N short peptide can increase the ability to recognize bacteria. In this study, we designed and synthesized AMP1–6 by amino acid substitution of mBjAMP1. Additionally, P-6, S-6, and L-6 were designed and synthesized by adding bacterial pheromones based on 1–6. Functional tests showed that the four AMPs had the ability to kill Gram-negative Vibrio anguillarum , Pseudomonas mendocina , and Vibrio parahaemolyticus , and Gram-positive Micrococcus luteus and Listeria monocytogenes . Additionally, all four AMPs induced permeabilization and depolarization of bacterial cell membranes and increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Importantly, they had little or no mammalian cytotoxicity. At the same time, 1–6 and L-6 protected the stability of intestinal flora in Sebastes schlegelii and increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillaceae . In summary, our results indicate that the designed AMPs have broad application prospects as a new type of polypeptide antimicrobial agent.

Abstract:Multidrug resistance to pathogens has posed a severe threat to public health. The threat could be addressed by antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) with broad-spectrum suppression. In this study, Brevibacillus halotolerans 7WMA2, isolated from marine sediment, produced AMPs against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The AMPs were precipitated by ammonium sulfate 30% (w/v) from culture broth and dialyzed by a 1 kDa membrane. Tryptone Soy Agar (TSA) was used for the cultivation and resulted in the largest bacteria-inhibiting zones under aerobic conditions at 25 °C, 48 h. An SDS-PAGE gel overlay test revealed that strain 7WMA2 could produce AMPs of 5–10 kDa and showed no degradation when held at 121 °C for 30 min at a wide pH 2–12 range. The AMPs did not cause toxicity to HeLa cells with concentrations up to 500 μg/mL while increasing the arbitrary unit up to eight times. The study showed that the AMPs produced were unique, with broad-spectrum antimicrobial ability.

Abstract:The present study aimed to purify and characterize a novel low-molecular-weight antimicrobial peptide (AMP) named as PNMGL2 produced by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NMGL2. The AMP was effectively separated and purified by ethyl acetate extraction and DEAE-Sepharose anion exchange chromatography. Tricine-SDS-PAGE of the purified AMP showed a major protein band below 1.7 kDa, which was identified by MALDI-TOF MS to be a hexapeptide LNFLKK (761.95 Da), and structurally characterized to be combination of helixes and random coil by a PEP-FOLD 3 De novo approach. The antimicrobial activity of LNFLKK was confirmed by chemical synthesis of the peptide that showed clear inhibition (MIC 7.8 mg/mL) against both Gram-positive bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes ), and Gram-negative bacteria ( Enterobacter sakazakii , Escherichia coli and Shigella flexneri ). PNMGL2 was pH resistant (pH 2–9), heat stable (121 °C, 30 min), and protease sensitive. Treatment of UV rays, sodium chloride and organic solvents did not decrease the activity. Sequencing of the whole genome of L. plantarum NMGL2 revealed presence of a bacteriocin gene cluster with two putative bacteriocin genes (ORF4 and ORF5) that were not expressed, confirming the significance of PNMGL2 contributing the antimicrobial activity of the strain. This study demonstrated the low-molecular-weight AMP that was uncharacterized in the relevant available databases, suggesting its potential application as a novel natural food preservative.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii is on the rise around the world, highlighting the urgent need for novel antimicrobial drugs. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) contribute to effective protection against infections by pathogens, making them the most promising options for next-generation antibiotics. Here, we report two designed, cationic, antimicrobial-derived peptides: Mt6, and its dextroisomer D-Mt6, belonging to the analogs of MAF-1, which is isolated from the instar larvae of houseflies. Both Mt6 and D-Mt6 have a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity that is accompanied by strong antibacterial activities, especially against A. baumannii planktonic bacteria and biofilms. Additionally, the effect of D-Mt6 against A. baumannii is stable in a variety of physiological settings, including enzyme, salt ion, and hydrogen ion environments. Importantly, D-Mt6 cleans the bacteria on Caenorhabditis elegans without causing apparent toxicity and exhibits good activity in vivo. Both Mt6 and D-Mt6 demonstrated synergistic or additive capabilities with traditional antibiotics against A. baumannii, demonstrating their characteristics as potential complements to combination therapy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) experiments revealed that two analogs displayed rapid bactericidal activity by destroying cell membrane integrity. Furthermore, in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophage cells, these AMPs drastically decreased IL-1β and TNF-a gene expression and protein secretion, implying anti-inflammatory characteristics. This trait is likely due to its dual function of directly binding LPS and inhibiting the LPS-activated mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways in macrophages. Our findings suggested that D-Mt6 could be further developed as a novel antimicrobial/anti-inflammatory agent and used in the treatment of A. baumannii infections. IMPORTANCE Around 700,000 people worldwide die each year from antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Acinetobacter baumannii in clinical specimens increases year by year, and it is developing a strong resistance to clinical drugs, which is resulting in A. baumannii becoming the main opportunistic pathogen. Antimicrobial peptides show great potential as new antibacterial drugs that can replace traditional antibiotics. In our study, Mt6 and D-Mt6, two new antimicrobial peptides, were designed based on a natural peptide that we first discovered in the hemlymphocytes of housefly larvae. Both Mt6 and D-Mt6 showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, especially against A. baumannii, by damaging membrane integrity. Moreover, D-Mt6 showed better immunoregulatory activity against LPS induced inflammation through its LPS-neutralizing and suppression on MAPK signaling. This study suggested that D-Mt6 is a promising candidate drug as a derived peptide against A. baumannii.
A Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Spampcin56-86 from Scylla paramamosain Exerting Rapid Bactericidal and Anti-Biofilm Activity In Vitro and Anti-Infection In Vivo

Abstract:The abuse of antibiotics leads to the increase of bacterial resistance, which seriously threatens human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find effective alternatives to antibiotics, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are the most promising antibacterial agents and have received extensive attention. In this study, a novel potential AMP was identified from the marine invertebrate Scylla paramamosain and named Spampcin. After bioinformatics analysis and AMP database prediction, four truncated peptides (Spa31, Spa22, Spa20 and Spa14) derived from Spampcin were screened, all of which showed potent antimicrobial activity with different antibacterial spectrum. Among them, Spampcin56-86 (Spa31 for short) exhibited strong bactericidal activity against a variety of clinical pathogens and could rapidly kill the tested bacteria within minutes. Further analysis of the antibacterial mechanism revealed that Spa31 disrupted the integrity of the bacterial membrane (as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy observation, NPN, and PI staining assays), leading to bacterial rupture, leakage of cellular contents (such as elevated extracellular ATP), increased ROS production, and ultimately cell death. Furthermore, Spa31 was found to interact with LPS and effectively inhibit bacterial biofilms. The antibacterial activity of Spa31 had good thermal stability, certain ion tolerance, and no obvious cytotoxicity. It is worth noting that Spa31 could significantly improve the survival rate of zebrafish Danio rerio infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, indicating that Spa31 played an important role in anti-infection in vivo. This study will enrich the database of marine animal AMPs and provide theoretical reference and scientific basis for the application of marine AMPs in medical fields.

Abstract:Acinetobacter baumannii is designated by the World Health Organisation as a critical priority pathogen. Previously we discovered antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), namely Lynronne-1, -2 and -3, with efficacy against bacterial pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Here we assessed Lynronne-1, -2 and -3 structure by circular dichroism and efficacy against clinical strains of A. baumannii . All Lynronne AMPs demonstrated alpha-helical secondary structures and had antimicrobial activity towards all tested strains of A. baumannii (Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations 2–128 μg/ml), whilst also having anti-biofilm activity. Lynronne-2 and -3 demonstrated additive effects with amoxicillin and erythromycin, and synergy with gentamicin. The AMPs demonstrated little toxicity towards mammalian cell lines or Galleria mellonella . Fluorescence-based assay data demonstrated that Lynronne-1 and -3 had higher membrane-destabilising action against A. baumannii in comparison with Lynronne-2, which was corroborated by transcriptomic analysis. For the first time, we demonstrate the therapeutic activity of Lynronne AMPs against A. baumannii .

Abstract:ABSTRACT Antibiotic resistance poses a significant public health threat worldwide. The rise in antibiotic resistance and the sharp decline in effective antibiotics necessitate the development of innovative antibacterial agents. Based on the central symmetric structure of glycine–serine–glycine, combined with tryptophan and arginine, we designed a range of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Notably, AMP W 5 demonstrated a rapid and effective sterilization against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), displaying both a minimum inhibitory concentration and a minimum bactericidal concentration of 8 μM. Mechanistic studies revealed that AMP W 5 killed bacterial cells by disrupting the cytoplasmic membrane integrity, triggering leakage of cell contents. AMP W 5 also exhibited excellent biocompatibility in both in vitro and in vivo safety evaluations. AMP W 5 treatment significantly reduced skin bacterial load in our murine skin infection model. In conclusion, we designed a novel centrosymmetric AMP representing a promising medical alternative to conventional antibiotics for treating MRSA infections. IMPORTANCE Increasing antibiotic resistance and the paucity of effective antibiotics necessitate innovative antibacterial agents. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major pathogen causing bacterial infections with high incidence and mortality rates, showing increasing resistance to clinical drugs. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) exhibit significant potential as alternatives to traditional antibiotics. This study designed a novel series of AMPs, characterized by a glycine–serine–glycine-centered symmetrical structure, and our results indicated that AMP W5 exhibited a rapid and effective bactericidal effect against MRSA. AMP W5 also demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and a bactericidal mechanism that disrupted membrane integrity, leading to leakage of cellular contents. The notable reduction in skin bacterial load observed in mouse models reinforced the clinical applicability of AMP W5. This study provides a promising solution for addressing the increasing threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and heralds new prospects for clinical applications.

Novel antimicrobial peptides based on Protegrin-1: In silico and in vitro assessments

Abstract:The development of antibiotic resistance has caused significant health problems. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered next-generation antibiotics. Protegrin-1 (PG-1) is a β-hairpin AMP with a membrane-binding capacity. This study used twelve PG-1 analogs with different amino acid substitutions. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to assess these analogs, and their physicochemical properties were computed using the Antimicrobial Peptide Database. Three AMPs, PEP-D, PEP-C, and PEP-H, were chosen and synthesized for antibacterial testing. The microbroth dilution technique and hemolytic assays evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy and cellular toxicity. The checkerboard method was used to test the combined activity of AMP and standard antibiotics. Cell membrane permeability and electron microscopy were used to evaluate the mode of action. The chemical stability of the selective AMP, PEP-D, was assessed by a validated HPLC method. PEP-D consists of 16-18 amino acid residues and has a charge of +7 and a hydrophobicity of 44 %, similar to PG-1. It can efficiently inactivate bacteria by disrupting cell membranes and significantly reducing hemolytic activity. Chemical stability studies indicated that AMP was stable at 40 °C for six months under autoclave conditions. This study could introduce the potential therapeutic application of selective AMP as an anti-infective agent.

Abstract:Aggregation of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) enhances their efficacy by destabilising the bacterial cell wall, membrane, and cytosolic proteins. Developing aggregation-prone AMPs offers a promising strategy to combat antibiotic resistance, though predicting such AMPs and understanding bacterial responses remain challenging. Octopus bimaculoides , a cephalopod species, lacks known AMP gene families, yet its protein fragments were used to predict AMPs via artificial intelligence tools. Four peptides (Oct-P1, Oct-P2, Oct-P3, and Oct-P4) were identified based on their aggregation propensity. Among them, Oct-P2 reduced the viability of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by up to 90%, confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It further aggregated plasmid DNA in vitro , and the presence of extracellular DNA reduced their antibacterial activity. With knockout mutants, it revealed that Oct-P2 was internalised into bacterial cells, possibly through membrane transport proteins, enhancing its antibacterial effect. Aggregation-induced emission assays and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that Oct-P2 aggregates with transcription promoter DNA, inhibiting transcription and translation in vitro. This dual-target mechanism not only highlights the potential of Oct-P2 as a lead template for new antimicrobial drug development, but also opens a new window for discovering AMPs from protein fragments against the upcoming challenge of bacterial infections. Statement of significance A popular strategy for identifying antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in specific genomes uses the conserved regions of AMP families, but this strategy has limitations in organisms lacking classical AMP gene families, such as Octopus. Fragments from non-antimicrobial proteins serve as a rich source for the identification of new AMPs. In this study, we used artificial intelligence tools to search for potential candidate AMP sequences from non-antimicrobial proteins in Octopus bimaculoides . The successful identification of aggregation-prone AMPs was shown to decrease bacterial viability, increase permeability, and reduce biomass. One candidate, Oct-P2, kills the gram-negative bacteria E. coli by aggregating with DNA and inhibiting transcription and translation, suggesting a new intracellular mechanism of AMP activity.

Abstract:Power quality is one of the major concerns in the distribution network nowadays. Many methodologies and equipment have been designed and developed to mitigate power quality issues that are encountered in an electrical system. All devices are susceptible to failure or malfunction when they encounter a power quality problem. This paper reviews the different types of power quality issues, their causes, and lists possible solutions for the mitigation of these issues, particularly the power electronics type solutions. The Dynamic Voltage Restorer and the Distribution Static Compensator are investigated in detail, simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and PSCAD, and the simulation results are compared to determine which device is best suited for mitigating power quality issues pertaining to voltage sags in a distribution network. Conclusions are drawn based on the simulation results and recommendations are made for possibility of future work.
Histometric analysis of rat alveolar wound healing.

Abstract:The chronology of alveolar wound healing was analyzed by a standard stereological method (point-counting volumetry) in normal rats. The upper right incisors were extracted and the animals were killed 1, 2, 3 and 6 weeks postoperatively. A light camera was used to determine the volume fraction of histologic components in the apical, middle and cervical thirds of the alveolus. Progressive bone neoformation was quantified, in parallel to a decrease in percent volume of connective tissue. A significantly smaller volume fraction of bone trabeculae in the cervical third of the socket was observed at all periods except the 6th week. The present histometric data show that bone neoformation continued to proceed beyond the 3rd postoperative week.
