Abstract:Background Erosive tooth wear (ETW) has become a crucial oral health problem over the decades in China. Objectives To explore the prevalence and risk indicators of ETW among adolescents in Guangzhou, south China. Methods A cross-sectional survey of 720 participants was conducted in Guangzhou, using an equal-sized, stratified, multistage random sampling approach. The participants were from two different age groups (12- and 15-year-olds), 360 per group. The ratio of males to females was 1:1 in each group. ETW was recorded utilising the basic erosive wear examination (BEWE) index as the dependent variable. Independent variables included age, gender, region, socioeconomic status, dietary factors, oral health measures and others. Results The prevalence rates (weighted) of ETW and dentin exposure (DE) were 56.1% and 26.2% among adolescents in Guangzhou, with mean teeth (weighted) of 1.8 +/- 2.5 and 0.6 +/- 1.5, respectively. No matter the prevalence or the mean teeth, the 15-year-olds were higher than the 12-year-olds; the mean teeth of ETW of males was higher than that of females; the mean teeth of ETW and DE of the adolescents of low socioeconomic status were higher than those of high socioeconomic status. Medium to high risk levels were found for 10.1%. In the multiple regression model, age, gender and taking acidic foods/drinks before sleep were associated with ETW. Conclusions Moderate ETW in the permanent dentition was common among adolescents in Guangzhou. However, the teeth involved were low. Dietary factors and demographics were the main risk indicators.
Risk indicators for the severity of erosive wear in deciduous dentition of Mexican schoolchildren aged 5 to 7 years

Abstract:The objective of this work was to estimate the prevalence and severity of erosive tooth wear (ETW), and to identify risk indicators of deciduous dentition of a group of schoolchildren from public schools in Tlalnepantla de Baz, State of Mexico. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 352 schoolchildren from 5 to 7 years old. The severity of the ETW was evaluated using the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE). Risk indicators were evaluated through a survey which included food and beverage consumption, consumption habits, vitamin C consumption, gastroesophageal reflux, heartburn, belching, xerostomia, vomiting and teeth grinding. Multinomial logistic regression models were fitted. The prevalence of ETW was 99.7% (n = 351). Regarding severity, 46.6% were at a null/mild level, 27.3% moderate, and 26.1% severe. Males were more likely to present severe ETW (odds ratio (OR) = 2.23, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.27-3.93; p = 0.005). The risk indicators for the severity of ETW were the frequent consumption of citrus fruits (OR = 2.09, 95% CI, 1.12-3.89; p = 0.021), fruit juice (OR = 1.99, 95% CI, 1.06-3.75; p = 0.033), processed beverages (OR = 2.15, 95% CI, 1.23-3.78; p = 0.008) and hot sauce (OR = 1.82, 95% CI, 1.03-3.20; p = 0.036). The prevalence of ETW in the deciduous dentition was very high (99.7%) and ~1/3 for severe ETW. The dietary factors associated with severe ETW are part of the regular consumption of Mexican school-age children, which impact their oral health condition. It is important to establish intervention strategies from the infant stage, focused on both children and their caregivers.
The Prevalence of Erosive Tooth Wear and Related Risk Factors in 6- to 12-Year-Old Students

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of erosive tooth wear in primary school students aged 6-12 in Jinzhou, including: prevalence, severity, extent, intraoral distribution and associated risk factors. Materials and methods: The data collection consists of two parts: the first part is the clinical examination of the participants. All erupted teeth were clinically assessed by three calibrated examiners, and classified according to the basic erosive wear examination (BEWE); The second part is a questionnaire about demographic information, parafunctional movement and lifestyle, completed by the parents or their guardians. Results: A total of 1,469 children were included in this experiment; erosive tooth wear (ETW) prevalence (BEWE ≥ 1) was 54.9%. According to cumulative BEWE index, the proportion of different ETW severity (high, medium, low, none) was 6.8%, 16.3%, 27.0% and 49.9%, respectively. In an analysis of risk factors, family factor, age, gender, extracurricular study time, oral hygiene habit, bruxism, unilateral mastication and acid diet was associated with the prevalence of ETW. Conclusions: This study shows that ETW has a high prevalence in students aged 6-12, and more common in deciduous molars and deciduous canine. Abrasion, attrition and erosion play an important role in ETW.
Caries experience in adolescents 13-14 years with and without erosive tooth wear: a case-control study

Abstract:Background: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) and dental caries have common etiological factors, such as unhealthy eating habits, and reduced salivary flow rate. Aim: To analyze the association between caries experience (CE) and ETW in adolescents 13-14 years. Study designs: Ninety-seven cases with distinctive ETW were identified and then sex-matched with a group of 97 controls and a group of 97 cases with initial ETW. The variables included were CE, presence of debris/dental calculus, salivary parameters, food and beverage consumption, chewable vitamin C tablet consumption, gastroesophageal reflux, frequent vomiting, and tooth brushing. Multinomial logistic regression models were adjusted. Results: An association was found between cases with a distinctive ETW defect and CE (OR = 1.09 (95% CI: 1.01-1.17); p = 0.020), sweet carbonated drinks consumption (OR = 1.16 (95% CI: 1.03-1.31); p = 0.012), and frequent vomiting (OR = 3.19 (95% CI: 1.02-10.01); p = 0.047). Conclusions: The preventive management of both ETW and dental caries should aim to reduce exposure to foods and beverages with high acid and sugar content. Given the association between ETW and acid attack by gastric juice, this would be an indicator of the need for referral to a specialist for treatment.
Self-reported dental pain in Mexican schoolchildren: a national ecological study

Abstract:The objective of this study was to quantify the prevalence of and identify the factors associated with dental pain among elementary- and middle-school students in Mexico. An ecological study was carried out with data from the 2008 National School-based Student-Health Survey. Information on dental pain from schoolchildren (aged 5 to 16 years) was collected from public schools across the 32 states of Mexico. In the original study, a questionnaire was used to explore various factors that affect the oral and dental health status of schoolchildren. The outcome variable was the prevalence rate (for dental pain) reported at state level. Various contextual socioeconomic variables were included, in addition to dental caries. Analyses were performed using Stata software. 52.9% of interviewees were girls; 26.9% of male and female schoolchildren in Mexico experienced gum or dental pain during the period analyzed (95% Confidence Interval = 26.02, 27.77%); according to the Spearman correlation results, self-reported dental pain was unrelated (p > 0.05) to the socioeconomic and sociodemographic variables that make up the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Human Development (HDI), as well as the marginalization and the Gini indices. However, the estimated percentages of self-reported dental pain and caries were positively correlated in the elementary- (r = 0.8958, p < 0.0001), middle-school (r = 0.8958, p < 0.0001) and total populations (r = 0.8542, p < 0.0001). Prevalence of self-reported dental pain was 28%, or about one in three, of the Mexican children and adolescents in the study sample. The state-level sociodemographic and socioeconomic risk indicators were not associated with the prevalence of dental pain. Self-reported caries was positively correlated with self-reported dental pain.

Abstract:Oral Mucosal Lesions (OMLs) are conditions of the oral mucosa that cause alterations in their presentation and pain in the affected patient, highlighting their importance for study. The aim of this research is to determine the prevalence of oral lesions in the Ecuadorian Austro. Descriptive statistics were used to associate variables, yielding statistically significant findings based on oral lesions, sex, and geographical environment. This study was conducted under the appropriate bioethical permissions. The results obtained correspond to the prevalence of lesions by province. Morona Santiago displays a rate of 17% for abscesses, surpassing the provinces of Azuay (13.50%) and Cañar (10.67%). However, gingivitis for pathology, Azuay stands out with 13.17%, while Cañar and Morona Santiago present 10.50% and 8.33%, respectively. There is also a predominant occurrence of abscesses in rural areas (41.17%) compared to urban ones (26.33%). Regarding sex, girls show a higher percentage of abscesses (41.17%) compared to boys who have a clear tendency to present GUM lesions (22.33%). The data indicates that in the studied provinces, geographical environment and sex are key variables to understand the distribution of oral lesions. These findings encourage us to continue pursuing this type of research, which contributes to improving the quality of life for children.

Abstract:RATIONALE Plans for NHS reform include strategies to reduce the gap between theory and the realities of clinical practice, with the aim of improving patient care. The role of Lecturer Practitioners (LPs) as educators for nurses who 'bridge' the theory-practice gap forms a central part of this strategy. Given the amount of investment in the role and its potential, this study sought to evaluate the impact of the LP role within the education and practice setting from the perspective of key stakeholders. METHODOLOGY The study, which included five LPs from a range of backgrounds, followed the principles of stakeholder evaluation. Each LP and their line manager identified six informants who were familiar with the LP's role. The total sample consisted of 36 participants. Semi-structured interviews were used to gain the perceptions of stakeholders about the LP role. The emerging themes were then discussed, consensus reached, and a collaborative project report produced. FINDINGS The findings were derived from the perceptions of the stakeholders. Minimally interpretive analysis of the data resulted in identification of five themes: (i) general overview of LP's individual qualities; (ii) preconceived notions of the post; (iii) reality of the post; (iv) areas of concern; and (v) developing the role. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicated that the LP role provides a credible and valuable link between theory and practice and, as such, is an important contribution to the modernization agenda of the NHS. It was apparent, however, that there are a number of areas in which developments are needed, and that organizational and individual actions are necessary in order to achieve the most from these posts.
An inverse relationship between dental fluorosis and Molar Incisor Hypomineralization in Mexican schoolchildren in an area with a high concentration of fluoride in drinking water: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the association between the frequency and severity of dental fluorosis and Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) in 8-12-year-old schoolchildren living in an area with a high concentration of fluoride in the drinking water. Methods: The present cross‑sectional study was conducted on Mexican children (n = 573) selected from one community presenting a drinking water fluoride concentration of 1.39 ppm/F. The prevalence of dental fluorosis was ascertained using the Thylstrup and Fejerskov Index (TFI). The presence and severity of MIH was evaluated using the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (EAPD) criteria. A multinomial regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence intervals (CI), using the severity of MIH as the result. Results: The prevalence of MIH was 37.7% and, by severity, was 16.1% mild, 14.3% moderate, and 7.3% severe. The prevalence of dental fluorosis in permanent dentition was 70.9% (TFI ≥1) and, by severity, was 29.2% (TFI = 0), 45.6% (TFI 1-3) and 25.3% (TFI ≥4), while 54.5% of subjects were found to have poor oral hygiene. Schoolchildren with fluorosis (TFI ≥4) were 49% less likely [OR = 0.51; p = 0.025] to present mild MIH than children with fluorosis (TFI <4). Similarly, children with fluorosis (TFI ≥4) were 53% [OR = 0.47; p = 0.019] and 62% [OR = 0.38; p = 0.036] less likely to present moderate and severe MIH than children with fluorosis (TFI <4). Conclusion: An inverse relationship between the presence of fluorosis and MIH was found. The results obtained by the present study may contribute to both the early identification of disorders affecting the enamel and the creation and implementation of long-term oral health prevention, promotion, and intervention programs in the affected population.

Abstract:Introduction Dental caries continues to be a public healthcare problem due to its high prevalence and morbidity. It was proposed to evaluate caries indicators in relation to healthcare access and hygienic‐dietary habits in Spanish preschoolers. Materials and Methods A cross‐sectional study was carried out on a random sample consisting of 343 patients ranging from 3 to 5 years of age in the primary care setting, the main measurements were: dental care access, hygienic‐dietary habits, and caries registration according to WHO criteria. Results The prevalence of caries was 35.3% and mean ± standard deviation (SD) dft was 1.51 ± 2.93. Preschoolers who had ever visited the dentist had a higher dft occurrence than those who had never attended the dentist. The lower prevalence of caries was significantly associated with the frequency of two daily brushings versus non‐daily brushing (p = 0.007; 25.3% vs. 47.1%) and was 10.7% lower in patients who had the habit of night brushing (p = 0.041). The consumption of sugary liquids between meals implied a higher dft index. Conclusions The high prevalence of early childhood caries and the dental care access associated with poor oral health suggest the need to implement a multidisciplinary oral healthcare program that involves both healthcare and dental healthcare professionals in Primary Health Care Units without forgetting the participation of the community and local administrations.

Abstract:Dental wear arises from mechanical (attrition or abrasion) and chemical (erosion) factors. Despite its prevalence and clinical significance, accurately measuring and understanding its causes remain challenging in everyday practice. This one-year study with 39 participants involved comprehensive examinations and full-arch intraoral scans at the start and after 12 months. Volume loss exceeding 100 μ on each tooth's surfaces (buccal, lingual/palatine and incisal/occlusal) was measured by comparing three-dimensional scans from both time points. This study also assessed factors such as abrasion and erosion through clinical exams and questionnaires. There were no significant differences in dental wear in participants with sleep bruxism. However, noticeable wear occurred in the front teeth of those with waking bruxism and joint-related symptoms. Increased wear was associated with frequent consumption of acidic drinks, regular swimming, dry mouth, nocturnal drooling and heartburn, while no significant wear was found in patients with reflux. The used methodology proved effective in accurately assessing the progression of dental wear, which is important as many patients may initially be asymptomatic. The variability observed in dental wear patterns underscores the need to develop specific software applications that allow immediate and efficient comparison of wear areas based on extensive analysis of patient databases.

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiology of tooth wear in Beijing and to establish appropriate preventive measures. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional analysis involved a questionnaire survey conducted for 1,812 individuals aged 12–74 years in Beijing. Subjects were local residents living in the region for >6 months before the survey. Subjects were evaluated using clinical examinations with the basic erosive wear examination index and a self-administered questionnaire. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Results: The prevalence of maxillary tooth wear was 84.9% for the molars, 68.9% for the premolars, 74.1% for the canines and 97% for the incisors. In the mandible, the corresponding prevalence rates were 85.2%, 59.3%, 78.6% and 97.4%, respectively. The occlusal, incisal and cervical surfaces showed more frequent wear compared with the other surfaces. Age, acidic beverages, xerostomia and brushing habits were identified as risk factors for tooth wear ( P <0.05). Conclusions: Tooth wear is common in Beijing. Specific preventive measures should be recommended for individuals reporting excessive consumption of fruits and/or acidic beverages, and those with xerostomia. In particular, incisor wear should be carefully monitored in individuals of all age groups.

Abstract:The concept of stator flux orientation control of induction motor (IM) based on the optimal regulator theory has been introduced in the literature. In this paper, the idea is expanded to improve the performance at low speeds by proposing programmable low-pass filter (LPF) for flux vector synthesis. The developed control structure provides high-quality signal for the stator frequency. This signal is utilized here to determine the filter coefficients as well as the vector rotator. Compared with other programmable LPF implementations, the presented one is likely to provide better results since it is independent of the machine equations and doesn't impose additional dynamic delay. Simulation and experimental studies on 1-kW three-phase induction motor are provided to validate the method.
Epidemiological Overview of Overweight and Obesity Related to Eating Habits, Physical Activity and the Concurrent Presence of Depression and Anxiety in Adolescents from High Schools in Mexico City: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Overweight and obesity in adolescents has become a serious public health problem worldwide and Mexico City is no exception. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiological panorama of overweight and obesity related to eating habits, physical activity and the concurrent presence of depression and anxiety in adolescents from high schools in Mexico City. Anthropometric measurements were taken from 2710 adolescents from 33 participating high schools. Likewise, a previously validated eating habit and physical activity questionnaire was administered, which consisted of four different sections, where each of the sections focused on key aspects of the participants' lifestyle: (1) eating habits, (2) intake of non-recommended foods, (3) food and company environment, and (4) physical activity. Moreover, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) for anxiety and depression was applied. In this study, a high prevalence of overweight and obesity (26.5% overweight and 20.0% obese) was found in adolescents from high schools in Mexico City. Only 13.14% of participants had adequate eating habits and 18.19% physical activity habits. An association was found between having inadequate eating habits and obesity in adolescent women (OR = 1.95; CI 1.009–3.76). Additionally, associations were observed between depression symptoms and obesity (OR = 5.68, CI 1.36–32.81; p = 0.01), while anxiety was associated with underweight and obesity adjusted by other dietary habits and psychological factors. Therefore, it is important to identify adolescents with overweight or obesity and establish prevention strategies for weight control in this age group, promoting healthy eating, physical activity and education in mental health.

Abstract:Aim: To assess the relationship among caries and age, gender, immigrant condition, socioeconomic status (SES), and a behavioral risk factor (toothbrushing) in a sample of 3-5-year-old children.Materials and methods: We performed a random cross-sectional survey from January to December 2017, carrying out clinical examinations to estimate the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft) score. Parents filled in a questionnaire reporting their education level (SES) and the daily frequency of children's toothbrushing. The multivariate analysis assessed the association between caries occurrence and the independent variables. The dmft score was assessed by zero-inflated negative binomial regression (ZINBR).Results: Out of 1,441 children in the sample, 357 (26.0%) presented at least one caries-affected tooth. Caries risk significantly increased with age and irregular toothbrushing, and it was significantly higher in children with lower SES levels. We modeled caries risk by means of ZINBR. The degree of caries experience increased in children from lower SES positions, immigrant status, and of older age; regular toothbrushing (twice a day) is a predicting factor to belong to the "zero caries" group.Conclusion: Dental caries represent a significant burden in preschool children and can be regarded as an early marker of social disadvantage.Clinical significance: The confirmation of the earliest preventive approach as the only chance to grant a "caries free" dentition in all ages and the first target for a pediatric dentist.How to cite this article: Ferro R, Besostri A, Olivieri A, <i>et al.</i> Early Childhood Caries in a Preschool-based Sample in Northeast Italy: Socioeconomic Status and Behavioral Risk Factors. Abstract:Background: There is a paucity of population-based surveys on oral health conditions in Ecuador. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct an epidemiological survey with a representative sample of children aged 12 years from public schools of Quito, Ecuador. The aim of this initial report was to describe the methodology used in the survey, as well to present results regarding calibration procedures and prevalence of oral-health related outcomes. Methods: We invited 33 public schools' coordinators from the urban area of Quito, and 1100 children (12 years old) to take part in this study. Six trained and calibrated examiners conducted clinical examinations using oral mirrors and ball-ended probes to assess: dental caries, traumatic dental injuries, malocclusion, gingival bleeding, presence of calculus and fluorosis. Children also responded a questionnaire on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). Individual sociodemographic data was collected through a questionnaire sent to parents. Moreover, some contextual data on school environment (infrastructure conditions, promotion of health practices and negative episodes) were also evaluated. Prevalence values, crude and weighted by sampling weights, and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated. Results: Nine hundred and ninety-eight children from 31 schools were examined from March to May 2017. The adjusted prevalence values (95%CI) for the six outcomes evaluated were: dental caries = 60.3% (55.3 to 65.0%); traumatic dental injuries = 20.7% (17.2 to 24.8%); dental fluorosis = 63.7% (58.5 to 68.5%); gingival bleeding = 92.0% (87.1 to 95.2%); presence of calculus = 69.9 (60.5 to 77.9%); and malocclusion = 25.8% (21.8 to 30.3%). Adjusted mean of number of decayed, missed or filled permanent teeth (DMF-T) was 1.61 (1.37 to 1.84). Results on OHRQoL and other contextual variables will be reported in other articles. Conclusion: The prevalence of the majority of oral health problems in 12-year-old children from public schools in Quito-Ecuador was compatible with those observed in other similar cities. However, periodontal health and fluorosis seem to be highly prevalent in children from Quito.
Frequency of Candida spp. in the Oral Cavity of Asymptomatic Preschool Mexican Children and Its Association with Nutritional Status

Abstract:Malnutrition is a public health problem in developing countries, affecting the child population, which favors the appearance of infections such as oral candidiasis. In Mexico, information on the presence of oral colonization by Candida spp. in asymptomatic children is scarce. The present study aimed to determine the presence of Candida spp. in the oral cavity of asymptomatic preschool Mexican children and its association with their nutritional status. A sample of oral mucosa was obtained using a sterile swab and then inoculated in Sabouraud dextrose agar with antibiotics, and the yeast growth was phenotypically identified. The anthropometric profile of children was performed based on the guidelines of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry. In addition, eating habits were investigated. The possible associations between the variables were determined through the chi-square test (IC95%, p < 0.05) (GraphPad Prism 8.0). Among the 743 assessed children (403 boys and 340 girls), the average age was 4.6 years, and the average nutritional status was normal (53.7%), followed by undernutrition (28.4%), overweight (12.4%) and obesity (5.5%). In 52 children, Candida was isolated, and the identified species were C. albicans (87.8%), C. glabrata (11.5%), C. krusei (5.8%) and C. parapsilosis (1.9%). The frequency of colonization was greater in males of six years (69.23%). There was no significant association between the colonization by Candida spp. and the nutritional status; however, a relation was observed with a high intake of simple carbohydrates.

Abstract:Background: The pediatric population is one of the social groups most affected by oral pathology, and overweight and/or obesity is increasingly frequently observed. This work presents a study of the prevalence of oral disease in the school population in Mallorca and its relationship with overweight/obesity. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 718 students aged 5–6 (n = 255), 12 (n = 230) and 15 years (n = 233). The WHO criteria for diagnosing and coding examined teeth and overweight/obesity prevalence values. To explore the differences in data, the mean was analyzed using the Student's t-test or a one-way analysis of variance followed by the Bonferroni post hoc analysis. Results: Results found that students aged 15 years have a caries prevalence rate of 45.49%, higher than those aged 12 (27.39%). The presence of dental calculus in 15-year-old students is 52.8%, even higher than in 12-year-olds (30%). Students aged 6 and 12 with lower weight percentiles have fewer healthy teeth than those with higher percentiles. Conclusions: The schoolchildren have experienced a decrease in caries and an increase in periodontitis, with weight percentile potentially influencing the number of healthy teeth.

Abstract:Multivariate analyses indicated that saliva secretion, severity of refluxoesophagitis (RO) and proton‐pump inhibitor resistance were associated with the prevalence of erosive tooth wear (ETW), while age, BMI and severity of RO were associated with the severity of ETW. The Odds ratio of saliva secretion and BMI were less than 1, meaning that higher saliva secretion resulted in a lower incidence of ETW, and lower BMI was associated with severe ETW. Background Extrinsic factors for erosive tooth wear (ETW) have been widely reported, but the intrinsic factors for wear remain unclear. Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors associated with the prevalence of ETW in patients with reflux oesophagitis (RO). To prevent severe ETW with RO, factors associated with severity of ETW were also evaluated. Methods A total of 270 patients with RO were recruited. A modified tooth wear index was used to evaluate the prevalence and severity of ETW. Salivary secretion and buffering capacity were assessed prior to endoscopy. Subjects were asked to complete a medical condition and oral self‐care questionnaire. Univariate and multivariate analyses were employed to identify factors collectively associated with the prevalence and severity of ETW. Results A total of 212 cases were categorized as patients with ETW (148 with mild ETW and 64 with severe ETW). Multivariate analyses indicated that saliva secretion, severity of RO and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) resistance were associated with the prevalence of ETW, whereas age, BMI and severity of RO were associated with the severity of ETW. The odds ratio of saliva secretion and BMI were less than 1, meaning that higher saliva secretion resulted in a lower prevalence of ETW and lower BMI was associated with severe ETW. Conclusion Saliva secretion, severity of RO and PPI resistance were associated with the prevalence of ETW, whereas age, BMI and severity of RO were associated with the severity of ETW. Lower saliva secretion and BMI were significant factors for ETW.

Relationship Between Low Education and Poor Periodontal Status among Mexican Adults Aged ≥50 Years

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the association between educational level and the presence of periodontal disease in adults ages ≥ 50 years in Mexico. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2098 Mexican adults, using data from the annual reports of the Epidemiological Monitoring System for Oral Pathologies from 2019-2022. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, age, educational level, oral hygiene, and diabetes. Periodontal status was evaluated using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and was classified into: CPI = 0 (healthy); CPI = 1 (bleeding on probing); CPI = 2 (calculus); and CPI = 3 or 4 (pocket depth ≥ 4 mm). A multinomial regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence intervals (CI), using periodontal status as the result. Results: 39.9% of subjects presented periodontal pockets of ≥ 4 mm, 20.8% presented calculus, and 12.8% presented bleeding, while only 26.4% were classified as healthy. A low level of education (≤ 9 years) (OR = 4.84; p 0.001), age ≥ 65 years (OR = 1.33; p = 0.025), poor oral hygiene (OR = 6.86; p 0.001), smoking (OR = 1.51; p = 0.025), and diabetes (OR = 1.73; p 0.001) were statistically significantly associated with the presence of periodontal pockets ≥ 4 mm. Conclusions: A low level of education is associated with worse periodontal status in adults aged 50 years or more. These findings reiterate the importance of implementing effective strategies and the incorporation of interventions for improving the access to and quality of services targeted at aging communities.
