Abstract:The adsorption characteristics of rice-husk biochar (RHB) rich in silicon (Si) for Cd2+ in solution and soil were investigated. Three biochars were produced at different pyrolytic temperatures of 300 °C(RHB300), 500 °C(RHB500) and 700 °C (RHB700). The pH effect, adsorption kinetics and isotherms were examined, and chemical analyses of Cd2+-loaded biochars were conducted by SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD and Boehm titration. Biochars produced at higher temperature have much larger pH and surface area, resulting in greater adsorption capacities and faster adsorption kinetics. Maximum adsorption capacities calculated from Langmuir isotherm were 62.75, 77.37 and 93.50 mg/g for RHB300, RHB500 and RHB700, respectively. Cd2+ adsorption was primarily attributed to cation exchange and precipitation, which jointly contributed 59.55% (RHB300) to 76.05% (RHB700) of the total adsorption, but the mechanisms of complexation and coordination were of minor importance in total adsorption. The relationship of each mechanism with biochar's properties was further discussed. Si-containing minerals within biochar made a much larger contribution to precipitation than total adsorption, as the respective contribution proportion were 33.92% and 8.33% on average. When added to highly Cd-polluted soil, the biochars could effectively reduce the availability of Cd2+ after incubation for 35 days, and ameliorate soil acidification through the speediness of Si released into soil solutions. These demonstrate that rice husk-derived biochar, produced at high temperatures, can be suitable applied to mitigate Cd-contamination of soil and water, and the presented analyses shed light on the mechanisms underlying the adsorption by this Si-rich biochar.

Mechanisms for synergistically enhancing cadmium remediation performance of biochar: Silicon activation and functional group effects

Abstract:This work proposes an advanced biochar material (β-CD@SiBC) for controllable transformation of specific silicon (Si) forms through endogenous Si activation and functional group introduction for efficient cadmium (Cd) immobilization and removal. The maximum adsorption capacity of β-CD@SiBC for Cd(II) reached 137.6 mg g-1 with a remarkable removal efficiency of 99 % for 200 mg L-1Cd(II). Moreover, the developed β-CD@SiBC flow column exhibited excellent performance at the environmental Cd concentration, with the final concentration meeting the environmental standard for surface water quality (0.05 mg L-1). The remediation mechanism of β-CD@SiBC could be mainly attributed to mineral precipitation and ion exchange, which accounted for 42 % and 29 % of the remediation effect, respectively, while functional group introduction enhanced its binding stability with Cd. Overall, this work proposes the role and principle of transformation of Si forms within biochar, providing new strategies for better utilizing endogenous components in biomass.
Si-enriched biochars improved soil properties, reduced Cd bioavailability while enhanced Cd translocation to grains of rice

Abstract:Biochar and silicon (Si) have been widely considered to play an important role in mitigating cadmium (Cd) toxicity. In this study, wild-type rice (WT, high-Si) and Si-deficient mutant rice ( lsi1 , low-Si) were used as raw materials to prepare biochar at 500°C; the Si concentrations of high- and low-Si biochar were 15.9% and 5.3%, respectively. The impacts of different application rates (0%, 2%, 4%) of high- and low-Si biochars on soil chemical properties, Si and Cd fractions and availability, Cd absorption, and translocation were investigated. The results showed that both types of biochars increased soil pH, soil available nitrogen, and available phosphorus and potassium; and promoted Si uptake and plant growth of rice. Soil available Si, CaCl 2 -Si, acetic-Si, H 2 O 2 -Si, oxalate-Si, and Na 2 CO 3 -Si were also increased by biochar supply, especially for high-Si biochar treatments. In addition, both types of biochars had no effects on soil total Cd, but reduced soil available Cd by 2–17% in early season 2022, and reduced oxidizable Cd and residual Cd. Biochar application did not influence Cd concentrations in roots, stems, and leaves, but significantly increased Cd uptake and transport from stems and leaves to grains. The results suggested that Si-rich biochar could improve soil nutrients, change soil Si/Cd fractions and availability, promote rice growth but increase the risk of Cd toxicity in grains, indicating the complex of straw biochar in remediating Cd-contaminated paddy soil.

Abstract:Fe-modified biochar has been shown to have high sorption ability for cadmium (Cd), while Cd immobilization effects of Fe-modified biochars with Si-rich and S-rich feedstocks have been rarely addressed. To explore the effects of Fe-modified Si-rich and S-rich biochars on Cd translocation in the soil-rice system, a pot experiment was carried out with an acidic Cd-contaminated sandy loam paddy from central South China and a late season rice cultivate during July to November 2018. Rice straw and rice husk were chosen as Si-rich feedstocks, and rape straw was applied as S-rich feedstock, these feedstocks were further collected and pyrolyzed at 450 °C. Pristine and Fe-impregnated rice straw (BRS/BRS-Fe), rice husk (BRH/BRH-Fe) and rape straw (BRE/BRE-Fe) biochars were applied at 0 and 10 t/ha, respectively. The reductions in Cd concentrations in rice grains were 23.8%, 22.3% and 46.1% with treatments of BRE, BRS and BRH, respectively, compared to the control. Compared to other pristine biochars, BRH is more effective in Cd remediation in paddy soil. For Fe-modified biochars, BRE-Fe achieved the highest reductions in Cd concentrations in rice grains with 46.7% and 30.1%, compared with the control and BRE, respectively. BRE-Fe decreased Cd remobilization from leaves to grains. Only BRE-Fe enhanced the formation and Cd sorption capacity of iron plaque. BRS-Fe and BRH-Fe enhanced Fe content in rice plants, which might induce the reduction in iron plaque formation. Fe and S-contained complexes contents increased in the contaminated pristine biochar particles, but reduced in the contaminated BRE-Fe particles. Therefore, Fe modification could not enhance Cd immobilization effect of Si-rich biochar, while Fe modified S-rich biochar has promising potential for Cd remediation with enhancement in iron plaque formation and Cd fixation in rice leaves.

Recycled biochar adsorption combined with CaCl2 washing to increase rice yields and decrease Cd levels in grains and paddy soils: A field study

Abstract:Field-scale trials were conducted to remove cadmium (Cd) from paddy soil by using recycled hydroxyapatite modified biochar (HBC) plus low-level CaCl2 washing. Synergistic reduction efficiencies of total and available Cd in soil (45.6 % and 36.8 %) were achieved by the combined amendments compared with only HBC or CaCl2. The release of Cd from soil particulates was facilitated by CaCl2 washing and the increased soluble Cd in soil water (hardly removed by drainage) could be removed efficiently by recycled HBC adsorption. Significantly decreases in Cd translocation and accumulation in rice plants benefited from the decrease of Cd level and availability in soil and the increase of available silicon (Si). As a result, Cd contents in early/late rice grains decreased by ~85 % and met the Chinese national food standard. SOM, CEC, and soil nutrients after remediation were increased due to 10 %-15 % of HBC residual. Grain yields of the early and late rice increased by 34.1 % and 9.91 %, respectively. The collected HBC (>85 % of the total used HBC) was in-situ regenerated and could be used in the next field trials. The generated wastewater together with drainage from field treatment could be reused as irrigation water after the treatment with a small-scale reclamation ecosystem. The work provides a novelty remediation strategy for Cd-contaminated paddy soil. The noticeable remediation efficiency for Cd reduction in soil and grains, and improved productivity-relevant soil properties have important implications for paddy soil with poor fertility, severe desilicification, and Cd contamination in South China whereas the application of biochar or chemical washing alone did not.
Environmental Factors Influence the Effects of Biochar on the Bioavailability of Cd and Pb in Soil Under Flooding Condition

Abstract:Biochar, as a sustainable amendment, effectively remediates soils contaminated with potentially toxic metals. However, the immobilization efficiencies of biochar can vary according to the soil properties. To investigate the critical impact factor of soil properties on the immobilization of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in soil by biochar, this study was conducted with an incubation batch experiment and a pot experiment by using an acid soil sample (soil A), a weakly acidic soil sample (soil B), and an alkaline soil sample (soil C). The results showed that the CaCl 2 -extracted Cd in the three soil samples was reduced by 15.2% (soil A), 44.3% (soil B), and 22.0% (soil C) with biochar application, and the decrease rate of the available Cd concentration is significantly negatively ( P < 0.05) related with soil pH, cation exchange capacity, and the proportion of illite and illite–smectite mixed layers of clay minerals. Biochar significantly reduced the soil available Pb concentration of soil A, soil B, and soil C by 57.2%, 52.3%, and 40.3%, respectively. And the decreased rate of available Pb concentration is significantly negatively related to soil pH and soil organic materials ( P < 0.05). The Cd concentration of rice shoots is positively related to the amount of iron plaque. Biochar application decreased the formation of iron plaque on rice roots grown in soils A and B due to the biochar slowing down the decreasing trend of the redox potential during flooding. However, biochar increased the amount of iron plaque on rice roots grown in soil C, which had a higher pH. As a result, biochar reduced the accumulation of Cd and Pb in rice shoots and promoted the biomass of rice grown in soils A and B (acid soils) but had the opposite effect on soil C (an alkaline soil).

Abstract:The remediation of cadmium (Cd) contaminated cropland has been related to food safety and public health. While biochar derived from sewage sludge (SS) has been widely used for soil remediation due to its high efficiency of Cd immobilization, it has a low specific surface area and the ecological risk of heavy metals. Co-pyrolysis of straws and SS could resolve these issues. To date, little is known about the effect of biochar from SS/rice straw (RS) on Cd immobilization in soils. Here, we explored the soil remediation efficiency and mechanism of biochar derived from different mixing ratios (1:0, 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 0:1) of RS and SS named as RBC, R3S1, R2S1, R1S1, R1S2, R1S3 and SBC. It was shown that R1S2 amendment had the most efficiency of Cd immobilization among all amendments, which decreased the bioavailable Cd by 85.61% and 66.89% compared with RBC and SBC amendments. Results of biochar after soil remediation revealed that cation-π interaction, complexation, ion exchange and precipitation were the key mechanisms of Cd immobilization by biochar. All biochar amendments indirectly promoted Cd immobilization through increasing soil pH values, cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic carbon (SOC) and available phosphorous (AP). Compared with RBC, R1S2 reduced bioavailable Cd mainly through the increased soil pH, CEC and AP. However, the enhanced efficiency of Cd immobilization in R1S2 amendment than that in SBC amendment because of the more developed pore structure, functional groups and larger specific surface area of R1S2. Overall, our study showed a new type of biochar for the effective remediation of Cd-contaminated soil.

Abstract:To assess biochar potential for cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil, a pot experiment was conducted with samples of typical farmland soil from Shenyang area(North China), which was contaminated with cadmium due to sewage irrigation. Two maize-straw-derived biochar concentrations(11250 and 22500 kg.hm(-2)) were tested. The results showed that the biochar prepared with dry distillation of carbonization technology under oxygen-deficient conditions and low temperature(400-450 degrees C) had appropriate structural features and physical and chemical properties. The use of such biochar reduced the available-Cd ions in the contaminated soil, with a "passivation or inhibitory" effect which displayed a variable time-dependent response. The biochar led to soil pH changes during rice growth(increase followed by a decrease). Furthermore, the biochar significantly improved the soil organic matter and available-nutrients(N, P, K), and indeed a cumulative effect with time was observed. More importantly, the biochar significantly reduced the cadmium content in rice grains by an average of 33.01% compared to the control(CK), the treatment with higher biochar concentration being more effective; this indicates a decreased bio-availability of the cadmium. These results suggest that maize-straw-derived biochar is an effective remediation material for Cd-contaminated soil, which has good application potential for the environment.
Iron and silicon modified biochar for enhancing cadmium removal from water: Unveiling the crucial role of iron-induced silicon dissolution

Abstract:The interaction mechanisms of silicon (Si) and active ingredient iron (Fe) on cadmium (Cd) removal are still unknown. Herein, the Fe/Si modified biochar (Fe/Si-BC) was synthesized to enhance Cd removal by pre-immersion of Fe and ball milling loading of Si. Detailed characterizations indicated that Fe and Si were successfully introduced into Fe/Si-BC, resulting in the formation of a new metallic silicate (Ca 2.87 Fe 0.13 (SiO 3 ) 2 ). The maximum Cd adsorption capacity of Fe/Si-BC (31.66 mg g −1 ) was 3.6 times and 2.5 times higher than that of Fe-BC (8.89 mg g −1 ) and Si-BC (11.03 mg g −1 ), respectively, deriving from an enhancement of Si dissolution induced by Fe introduction. The dissolved Si could capture and combine Cd to form CdSiO 3 precipitation, which was strongly supported by the random forest regression and correlation between dissolved Si content and Cd adsorption capacity. This study advances the mechanistic insights into synergistic functions of Si and Fe in Cd removal.

Iron-modified biochars and their aging reduce soil cadmium mobility and inhibit rice cadmium uptake by promoting soil iron redox cycling

Abstract:Iron (Fe) modified biochar has been widely used for cadmium (Cd) contaminated soil remediation. However, the accompanying anions introduced during the modification process potentially affect the behavior of Cd in soil. In this study, we investigated the distinct Cd immobilization mechanisms by Fe2(SO4)3 modified biochar (FSBC) and Fe(NO3)3 modified biochar (FNBC) in a two-year pot experiment. Results showed that both FSBC and FNBC significantly reduced Cd concentrations in rice grains by 23%-42% and 30%-37% compared to pristine biochar (BC). Specifically, NFBC promoted the formation of amorphous Fe oxides by enhancing the NO3--reducing Fe(II) oxidation process, which significantly increased Fe/Mn oxide-bound Cd and decreased soil CaCl2-extractable Cd. For FSBC, the introduction of SO42- significantly promoted the formation of Fe plaques by enhancing the Fe(III) reduction process, which blocked the Cd transfer from the soil to the rice roots. More importantly, after two years of biochar application, an organo-mineral complex layer is formed on the biochar surface, which immobilized a large amount of Cd. The Cd immobilization on the surface of aged biochar could be due to the fixation by the secondary Fe oxides within the organo-mineral layer and the complexation by the surface functional groups. The result of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry showed that the Cd content on aged FNBC and FSBC was 5.9 and 2.6 times higher than on aged BC. This might be attributed to the Fe-modified biochar's higher electron exchange capability (EEC), which promoted the development of organo-mineral complexes. Notably, the EEC of biochar was maintained during its aging process, which may keep the biochar surface active and facilitate continual Cd immobilization. This study revealed the complex mechanisms of soil Cd immobilization with Fe-modified biochar, providing new insights into sustainable biochar environmental remediation.
Iron-modified Phosphorus- and Silicon-Based Biochars Exhibited Various Influences on Arsenic, Cadmium, and Lead Accumulation in Rice and Enzyme Activities in a Paddy Soil

Abstract:Contamination of paddy soils with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has become a severe environmental issue. Application of functionalized biochar for rice cultivation has been proposed as an effective means to reduce environmental risks of these PTEs in paddy soils. This work was undertaken to seek the positive effects of a rice husk-derived silicon (Si)-rich biochar (Si-BC) and a pig carcass-derived phosphorus (P)-rich biochar (P-BC), as well as their Fe-modified biochars (Fe-Si-BC and Fe-P-BC) on the enzyme activity and PTE availability in an As-Cd-Pb-contaminated soil. A rice cultivation pot trial was conducted using these functionalized biochars as soil amendments for the alleviation of PTE accumulation in rice plants. Results showed that Si-BC decreased the concentrations of As in rice grain and straw by 59.4 % and 61.4 %, respectively, while Fe-Si-BC significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced plant growth, increasing grain yield (by 38.6 %). Fe-Si-BC significantly (P < 0.05) elevated Cd and Pb accumulation in rice plants. P-BC enhanced the activities of dehydrogenase, catalase, and urease, and reduced grain-Pb and straw-Pb by 49.3 % and 43.2 %, respectively. However, Fe-P-BC reduced plant-As in rice grain and straw by 12.2 % and 51.2 %, respectively, but increased plant-Cd and plant-Pb. Thus, Fe-modified Si -and P-rich biochars could remediate paddy soils contaminated with As, and enhance the yield and quality of rice. Application of pristine P-rich biochar could also be a promising strategy to remediate the Pb-contaminated paddy soils and limit Pb accumulation in rice.
Combined use of lime, bentonite, and biochar for immobilization of Cd and mobilization of Se in paddy soil

Abstract:Remediation of soil contaminated with cadmium (Cd) that can produce rice enriched with selenium (Se) is highly significant for improving the public health in China. A key issue needing resolution in this regard is the simultaneous immobilization of Cd and mobilization of Se. To explore a potential promising method to remediate median-high Se soil that is contaminated by Cd, a potted experiment was conducted, and seven combined amendments (0.03–0.12% lime, 0.03–0.18% bentonite, and 0.3–1.2% biochar of the dry soil weight) were used to immobilize Cd in three paddy soils, in which the concentrations of Cd and Se are 0.46 and 0.45 mg/kg, 1.12 and 0.33 mg/kg, and 2.96 and 0.31 mg/kg, respectively. The soil pH increased by 1.5–2 units after the application of the amendments, and the soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration increased notably with the addition of large quantities of biochar. As the pH and SOC concentration increased, the concentrations of the available Cd in the soil decreased by 35–50%, and the FTIR spectrum showed that O-containing groups and Si–O facilitated the Cd immobilization. The concentration of Cd in brown rice decreased with a decrease in the available Cd. There was no apparent correlation between the Se concentration in the brown rice and the concentration of the available Se in the soil, although the available Se increased by 40–80% after the application of amendments. The accumulation of Se in rice grains was regulated by interactions among the lime, bentonite, biochar, and the soil. An SEM–EDS analysis showed that the biochar particles were covered with bentonite and other soil minerals that could postpone biochar aging and contribute to the longevity of the combined amendments in the soil.

Engineered biochars for simultaneous immobilization of as and Cd in soil: Field evidence

Abstract:Agricultural soil contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) poses a serious threat to food security. Immobilization serves as a widely used approach for the remediation of PTEs contaminated soils, nevertheless, the long-term effectiveness for the simultaneous immobilization of both cations and oxyanions remains a challenge. In order to effectively enhance the synergistic immobilization effect of soil As and Cd contaminated by multiple elements and improve the ecological environment of farmland. In this study, a typical polluted tailings area farmland was selected for situ immobilization experiments, and biochar was prepared from cow manure (CMB), rice straw (RSB), and pine wood (PWB) as raw materials. On this basis, the pristine biochar was modified with ferric chloride (F), potassium permanganate (K), magnesium chloride (M), and aluminum chloride (A), respectively. Furthermore, the immobilization effect of modified biochar on As-Cd and the stress effect on soil respiration were investigated. The results showed that CMB and RSB reduced the bioavailability of heavy metals, potassium permanganate has strong oxidizing properties, and the strong oxidability of potassium permanganate stimulated the generation of more oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of biochar, thereby enhancing the adsorption and complexation effect of modified materials on As and Cd. Among them, the extracted Cd concentration of Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) in KCMB and KRSB in 2020 decreased by 8.23-43.12% and 9.67-35.29% compared to other treatments, respectively. Meanwhile, the KCMB and KRSB treatments also reduced the enrichment of As and Cd in plant tissues. In addition, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in KCMB treatment was relatively high, and the carbon stability of the material was weakened. Simultaneously, the soil respiration emission of KCMB treatment was increased by 5.63% and 11.93% compared to KRSB and KPWB treatments, respectively. In addition, the structural equation also shows that DOC has a large positive effect on soil respiration. In summary, the KRSB treatment effectively achieve synergistic immobilization of As-Cd and provide important guiding significance for green and low-carbon remediation of polluted farmland.

Abstract:Biochar enriched in oxygenated functional groups and minerals has a high adsorption capacity for heavy metals. The roles and contributions of the organic and mineral fractions in biochars to heavy metal adsorption are critical to understanding the long-term effect of biochar application in contaminated soil. Batch adsorption experiments were performed on differently treated rice-bran-derived biochars to determine the contributions of the organic and mineral fractions to cadmium (Cd) adsorption in this study.
Remediation of Cd contaminated paddy soil using different kinds of biochar and mineral materials: a field trial

Abstract:In order to study the remediation effect of different immobilization materials,three kinds of straw biochar (rice biochar-SD,wheat biochar-XM and corn biochar-YM) and three kinds of mineral materials (calcium-magnesium phosphate-GM,phosphate rock powder-P,silicon fertilizer-GF) were selected and applied in the field of cadmium contaminated paddy soil. The results showed that different immobilization materials had no significant effect on rice yield except for high dosage GF treatment decreased rice yield. The increcse in soil pH and the decrease of soil available Cd content in YM and GM treatments were greater than those in other treatments. The decreased in Cd content in brown rice with high dosage GM treatment was 45.9％,respectively 58.5％ (from 0.179 mg/kg to 0.137 mg/kg). In three kinds of biochar treatments,treatment with high dosage SD can significantly reduce the Cd content of brown rice. The use cost of biochar was obviously higher than that of mineral materials. Considering remediation effect and use cost of different materials,GM is a highly recommended immobilization material,and the use of biochar as immobilization material still need to consider some factors such as costs and remediation efficiency.
Novel insights into effects of silicon-rich biochar (Sichar) amendment on cadmium uptake, translocation and accumulation in rice plants

Abstract:The effects and mechanisms of biochars with different silicon (Si) contents on Cadmium (Cd) uptake, translocation and accumulation in rice plants are not fully understood. Herein, we report a pot study to disentangle the interaction mechanisms of Si-rich biochars (Sichar RH300, RH700) and Si-deficient biochars (WB300, WB700) with high-Si soil (HSS) and low-Si soil (LSS) on Cadmium (Cd) and Si accumulation in rice (including grains, straw, and roots). Sichar was found to be better than Si-deficient biochars in reducing Cd uptake and accumulation in rice, and RH300 amendment was better than the RH700 treatment. The surface complexation of Cd with carboxyl groups and Si from biochar led Cd immobilization in soil, as portrayed by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The high Si content of biochars indicates a relatively lower bioaccumulation factor and translocation factor of Cd. The Sichar (e.g., RH300) treatment significantly increases the silicon concentration in rice (including grains, straw, and roots), but the Si concentrations of rice grains and roots decrease with WB700-amended LSS. Negative correlations between the concentrations of rice Si and Cd were observed, which could be related to lower expression as observed by Si transport genes (Lsi1 and Lsi3) in rice by Sichar amendment. These findings suggest that the Si released from Sichars can reduce the gene expression of Si transport channel of rice roots and inhibit the transport channel of Si, thus thereby inhibiting the Cd uptake, probably due to the utilization of same channel for Cd and Si. Integrative mechanisms of Sichar (RH300 and RH700) reduced Cd plant accumulation can be proposed by soil immobilization, inhibition of root transport, and prevention of plant translocation. Abstract:In recent years, cadmium pollution in water environment has become an environmental problem that could not be ignored. As a porous carbon rich solid material, biochar is an environment-friendly new material because of its ultra-high adsorption capacity and strong chemical stability. In this study, rice straw biochar (RS-Biochar) was successfully prepared at different temperatures for removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution. Through a series of characterization and adsorption experiments, the adsorption principle of Cd(II) by RS-Biochar was deeply studied. The results showed that RS-Biochar prepared at 600 °C (BioC600) has high specific surface area (232.6 m 2 /g) and shows high Cd(II) removal rate of 91.23% with the maximum Cd(II) adsorption capacity of 8.62 mg/g. The Langmuir model fit well to describe the adsorption process of Cd(II) on the BioC600. The mechanism analysis showed that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the biochar surface were concerned in the removal of Cd(II). The formation of CdCO 3 in the adsorption process was also be proven. Importantly, RS-Biochar could be conveniently produced with needed scale, displaying a promising approach for remediating Cd(II)-contaminated water environment and a huge application potential.

Abstract:Co-pyrolysis of straw and Ca(OH)2 is a feasible modification method to improve the adsorption capacity of biochar for Cd. However, few studies have quantitatively analyzed the contribution of different adsorption mechanisms of alkali-modified biochar. In this study, the alkali-modified (Ca) biochar were prepared by co-pyrolyzing lime (Ca(OH)2) and soybean straw (SBB) or rape straw (RSB) at 450 °C. The adsorption mechanism was investigated by a series of experiments and was provided by quantitative analysis. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cd2+ by Ca-SBB and Ca-RSB were calculated to be 78.49 mg g−1 and 49.96 mg g−1, which were 1.56 and 1.48 times higher than SBB (50.40 mg g−1) and RSB (33.79 mg g−1), respectively. Compared with the original biochar (SBB, RSB), alkali-modified biochar (Ca-SBB and Ca-RSB) were found to have faster adsorption kinetics and lower desorption efficiencies. The mechanism study indicated that Ca(OH)2 modification effectively enhanced the contribution of ion exchange and decreased the contribution of functional groups complexation. After Ca(OH)2 modification, precipitation and ion exchange mechanisms dominated Cd2+ absorption on Ca-SBB, accounting for 49.85% and 34.94% of the total adsorption, respectively. Similarily ion exchange and precipitation were the main adsorption mechanism on Ca-RSB, accounting however for 61.91% and 18.47% of total adsorption, respectively. These results suggested that alkali-modified biochar has great potential to adsorp cadmium in wastewater.

Synergistic effect between biochar and sulfidized nano-sized zero-valent iron enhanced cadmium immobilization in a contaminated paddy soil

Abstract:Biochar-based sulfidized nano-sized zero-valent iron (SNZVI/BC) can effectively immobilize cadmium (Cd) in contaminated paddy soils. However, the synergistic effects between biochar and SNZVI on Cd immobilization, as well as the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, a soil microcosm incubation experiment was performed to investigate the immobilization performance of SNZVI/BC towards Cd in the contaminated paddy soil. Results indicated that the addition of SNZVI/BC at a dosage of 3% significantly lessened the concentration of available Cd in the contaminated soil from 14.9 (without addition) to 9.9 mg kg −1 with an immobilization efficiency of 33.3%, indicating a synergistic effect. The sequential extraction results indicated that the proportion of the residual Cd in the contaminated soil increased from 8.1 to 10.3%, manifesting the transformation of the unstable Cd fractions to the steadier specie after application of SNZVI/BC. Also, the addition of SNZVI/BC increased soil pH, organic matter, and dissolved organic carbon, which significantly altered the bacterial community in the soil, enriching the relative abundances of functional microbes (e.g., Bacillus , Clostridium , and Desulfosporosinus ). These functional microorganisms further facilitated the generation of ammonium, nitrate, and ferrous iron in the contaminated paddy soil, enhancing nutrients' availability. The direct interaction between SNZVI/BC and Cd 2+ , the altered soil physicochemical properties, and the responded bacterial community played important roles in Cd immobilization in the contaminated soil. Overall, the biochar-based SNZVI is a promising candidate for the effective immobilization of Cd and the improvement of nutrients' availability in the contaminated paddy soil.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination of soil threatens human health, food security, and ecosystem sustainability. The in situ stabilization of Cd has been recognized as a potentially economical technology for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil. Recently, biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC) have received widespread attention as eco-friendly soil amendments that are more beneficial for plant growth, soil health, and remediation of contaminated soil. An experiment was performed in a paddy field to investigate the effects of two different types of BC (maize straw biochar and bamboo biochar) and AC (coconut shell activated carbon) in combination with rape organic fertilizer (R), calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer (P), and fulvic acid (F), respectively, on soil Cd immobilization, Cd accumulation in rice, and yield. The results indicated that the BC/AC-based amendments reduced soil bioavailable Cd (DTPA-Cd) and brown rice Cd by 9.58%–27.06% and 19.30%–71.77%, respectively. The transformation of exchangeable Cd (Ex-Cd) to carbonate-bound Cd (Ca-Cd), Fe-Mn oxide bond (Ox-Cd), and residual (Re-Cd) in soil accounted for the mitigation of Cd uptake and enrichment by rice. Additionally, BC-/AC-based amendments altered soil physicochemical properties, which significantly increased the soil pH and cation exchange capacity (CEC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), soil organic carbon (SOC), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), directly promoting soil health. All BC-/AC-based amendments significantly increased Fe IMP and Mn IMP concentrations by 47.31%–160.34% and 25.72%–73.09% in the Fe/Mn plaque (IMP), respectively. Maize straw and bamboo biochar-based amendments significantly increased rice yield by 10.46%–20.41% and 9.94%–16.17%, respectively, while coconut shell-activated carbon severely reduced rice yield by 65.06%–77.14%. The correlation analysis revealed that leaf Cd and IMP primarily controlled Cd uptake by rice, and soil pH, Eh, CEC, SOC, IMP, and TP influenced DTPA-Cd in soil. This field study demonstrated that maize straw and bamboo biochar-based amendments not only reduced soil DTPA-Cd in paddy fields but also decreased the accumulation of Cd in brown rice, as well as improved rice yield, which has potential application in Cd-contaminated agriculture fields. Coconut shell-activated carbon severely decreased rice yields, which is not appropriate for rice production.
