Abstract:Rhinoconjunctivitis and allergic asthma are among the most frequent diseases in the world, and pollen is their main cause. The incidence of respiratory allergic diseases is expected to grow in the coming years as a consequence of ambient pollution, changes in land use and land cover in cities, and climate change. In this context of global change, the environmental information provided by monitoring and warning networks must be as updated as possible in order to be useful to the end users in the cities. The Madrid Autonomous Region (central Spain) has suffered a noticeable change in its land-use configuration in recent decades and a significant upward temperature trend throughout the entire area. We found that the aerobiological stations in the Madrid Region Palynological Network, covering the most populated cities of this region in central Spain, registered a marked shift towards a greater airborne pollen load of the most abundant tree pollen taxa (Cupressaceae, Platanus and Quercus , but also Pinaceae, Olea and others). These temporal changes are very evident in the pollen calendar for two periods, 1994–2004 (past) and 2012–2022 (present), pointing to changes in the phenology and intensity of the airborne pollen dynamic in cities in the Madrid Region. Based on these findings, we present a technical proposal to the Madrid Region Palynological Network to generate pollen calendars for each city using the reference period of the last ten years, and to update this information every three years. Finally, we propose the latest pollen calendar for all the aerobiological stations in the Madrid Region Palynological Network for the last ten years (2013–2022), which is considered the reference aerobiological information at present for one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe.

Abstract:Allergic respiratory diseases are considered to be among the most important public health concerns, and pollen is the main cause of allergic respiratory diseases worldwide. However, the biological component of air quality is largely underestimated, and there is an important gap in the legislation in this area. The aims of this study were to characterise the occurrence and incidence of pollen exposure in relation to potential pollen sources and to delineate the main areas of aerobiological risk in the Madrid Autonomous Region based on homogeneous patterns of pollen exposure. This study uses the historical aerobiological database of the Madrid Region Palynological Network (central Spain) from ten pollen stations from 1994 to 2022, and the land-use information from the Corine Land Cover. Multiple clustering approaches were followed to group the sampling stations and subsequently all the 1 × 1km pixels for the Madrid Autonomous Region. The clustering dendrogram for land-use distribution was compared to the dendrogram for historical airborne pollen data. The two dendrograms showed a good alignment with a very high correlation (0.95) and very low entanglement (0.15), which indicates a close correspondence between the distribution of the potential pollen sources and the airborne pollen dynamics. Based on this knowledge, the Madrid Autonomous Region was divided into six aerobiological risk areas following a clear anthropogenic gradient in terms of the potential pollen sources that determine pollen exposure in the Madrid Region. Spatial regionalisation is a common practice in environmental risk assessment to improve the application of management plans and optimise the air quality monitoring networks. The risk areas proposed by scientific criteria in the Madrid Autonomous Region can be adjusted to other operational criteria following a framework equivalent to other air quality networks.

Abstract:This study presents the results of a quality assurance evaluation program applied to the method routinely used for the evaluation of a large elemental profile in aerosol samples from the air quality surveillance network of Extremadura, Spain, where low pollution levels are usually encountered. A critical evaluation of the most relevant analytical steps is presented, including long-term blank values evaluation, limits of detection, certified reference material recoveries, method uncertainty and results of comparison studies for gravimetric and trace element analysis. Results obtained at the air quality network of Extremadura for the gravimetric and multielemental analysis are presented for the 2008 campaign.

Abstract:Airborne pollen is produced by plants for their sexual reproduction and can have negative impacts on public health. The current monitoring systems are based on manual sampling processes which are tedious and time-consuming. Due to that, pollen concentrations are often reported with a delay of up to one week. In this study, we present an open-source user-friendly web application powered by deep learning for automatic pollen count and classification. The application aims to simplify the process for non-IT users to count and classify different types of pollen, reducing the effort required compared to manual methods. To overcome the challenges of acquiring large labelled datasets, we propose a semi-automatic labelling approach, which combines human expertise and machine learning techniques. The results demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces the effort required for users to count and classify pollen taxa accurately. The model achieved high precision and recall rates ( mAP@0.5), enabling reliable pollen identification and prediction.

Abstract:Low-cost light-scattering particulate matter (PM) sensors are often advocated for the dense monitoring networks. Recent literature has focused on evaluating their performance. Nonetheless, low-cost sensors are also considered unreliable and imprecise. Consequently, exploring techniques for anomaly detection, resilient calibration, and data quality improvement should be discussed more. In this study, we analyse a year-long acquisition campaign by positioning 56 low-cost light-scattering sensors near the inlet of an official PM monitoring station. We use the collected measurements to design and test a data processing pipeline composed of different stages, including fault detection, filtering, outlier removal, and calibration. These can be used in large-scale deployment scenarios where the quantity of sensors' data can be too high to be analysed manually. Our framework also exploits sensor redundancy to improve reliability and accuracy. Our results show that the proposed data processing framework produces more reliable measurements, reduces errors, and increases the correlation with the official reference.

Abstract:Abstract The advent of automatic pollen and fungal spore monitoring over the past few years has brought about a paradigm change. The provision of real-time information at high temporal resolution opens the door to a wide range of improvements in terms of the products and services made available to a widening range of end-users and stakeholders. As technology and methods mature, it is essential to properly quantify the impact automatic monitoring has on the different end-user domains to better understand the real long-term benefits to society. In this paper, we focus the main domains where such impacts are expected, using Europe as a basis to provide qualitative estimates and to describe research needs to better quantify impacts in future. This will, in part, also serve to justify further investment and help to expand monitoring networks.

Abstract:<p>Air quality has become a central issue in public health and urban planning management, due to the proven adverse effects of airborne pollutants. Considering temporary mobility restriction measures used to face low air quality episodes, the capability of foreseeing pollutant concentrations is crucial. We thus present SOCAIRE (Spanish acronim for "operational forecast system for air quality"), an operational tool based on a Bayesian and spatiotemporal ensemble of neural and statistical nested models. SOCAIRE integrates endogenous and exogenous information in order to predict and monitor future distributions of the concentration for the main pollutants. It focuses on modelling available components which affect air quality: past concentrations of pollutants, human activity, and numerical pollution and weather predictions. This tool is currently in operation in Madrid, producing daily air quality predictions for the next 48 hours and anticipating the probability of the activation of the measures included in the city's official air quality NO<sub>2</sub> protocols through probabilistic inferences about compound events.</p>

Abstract:According to the Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC, air quality zoning divides a territory into air quality zones where pollution and citizen exposure are similar and can be monitored using similar strategies. However, there is no standardized computational methodology to solve this problem, and only a few experiences in the Comunidad of Madrid based on chemistry transport models. In this study, we propose a methodological improvement based on the application of deep learning. Our method uses the CHIMERE-WRF air quality modelling system and adds a step that uses neural networks architectures to calibrate the simulations. We have validated our method in the Region of Murcia. The results obtained are promising given the values of the Pearson coefficient, obtaining for and for , improving 86 % and 29 % the performances reported in the state of the art. In addition, the cluster score improves after applying neural networks, demonstrating that neural networks improve the consistency of clusters compared to the current air quality zoning. This opened new research opportunities based on the use of neural networks for dimension reduction in spatial clustering problems, and we were able to provide recommendations for a new measurement point in the Region of Murcia Air Quality Network.

Seasonal Changes of the Airborne Microbiome in a Large Urban Area

Abstract:Abstract Background Compared to soil or aquatic ecosystems, the atmosphere is still an underexplored environment for microbial diversity. Besides its ecological importance, the spatial and temporal characterization of aerosolized microorganisms is relevant for understanding allergy and disease outbreaks, especially in highly populated cities. Results In this study, we surveyed the composition, variability and sources of microbes (bacteria and fungi) in the near surface atmosphere of a highly populated area, spanning ~ 4,000 Km 2 around the city center of Madrid (Spain), in different seasonal periods along two years. We found a core of abundant bacterial genera robust across space and time, most of soil origin, while fungi were more sensitive to environmental conditions. Microbial communities showed clear seasonal patterns driven by variability of environmental factors, mainly temperature and accumulated rain, while local sources played a minor role. We also identified taxa in both kingdoms characteristic of seasonal periods, but not of specific sampling sites or plant coverage. Conclusions The present study suggests that the near surface atmosphere of urban environments constitutes a stable ecosystem, with a relatively homogenous composition, modulated by climatic variations. As such, it contributes to our understanding of the long-term changes associated to the human exposome in the air of highly populated areas.

Abstract:It is distinguished that deficient outdoor air quality is responsible for substantial health and climate issues. The aim of our study was to investigate the air quality in the city of Zaragoza (Spain) by characterizing atmospheric particulate matter (PM10) during two seasons (winter and spring). PM10 samples were collected in 2022 in quartz filters through a low-volume sampler and chemically analysed by complementary analytical techniques: Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Raman Spectroscopy (RS) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS). Results have revealed, together with a temperature inversion phenomenon in winter, the presence of both natural (Al, Ca, Mg, Ti, Sr, Fe, etc.) and anthropogenic particles. The latter mainly formed by black carbon with an origin on fossil fuel combustion emissions. Additionally, chemical analyses of PM10 filters showed the presence of three types of microplastics suspended in the air of the city: polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamides (PA) and polystyrene (PS). The results obtained from this research are of special interest to take into account for future air quality policies, particularly those with the aim of reducing air pollution in cities.

Abstract:As a growing part of the world population is suffering from pollen-induced allergies, increasing the number of pollen monitoring stations and developing new dedicated measurement networks has become a necessity. To this purpose, Beenose, a new automatic and relatively low-cost sensor, was developed to characterize and quantify the pollinic content of the air using multiangle light scattering. A field campaign was conducted at four locations around Brussels, Belgium, during summer 2022 and winter–spring 2023. First, the consistency was assessed between the automatic sensor and a collocated reference Hirst-type trap deployed at Ixelles, south-east of Brussels. Daily average total pollen concentrations provided by the two instruments showed a mean error of about 15%. Daily average pollen concentrations were also checked for a selection of pollen species and revealed Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients ranging from 0.71 to 0.93. Subsequently, a study on the spatial variability of the pollen content around Brussels was conducted with Beenose sensors. The temporal evolution of daily average total pollen concentrations recorded at four sites were compared and showed strong variations from one location to another, up to a factor 10 over no more than a few kilometers apart. This variation is a consequence of multiple factors such as the local vegetation, the wind directions, the altitude of the measurement station, and the topology of the city. It is therefore highly necessary to multiply the number of measurement stations per city for a better evaluation of human exposure to pollen allergens and for more enhanced pollen allergy management.

Abstract:In response to difficulties with interpretation of data from narrow beam time-of-flight sonar for robotics, an algorithm for sonar interpretation that uses the entire return signals from several transducers with broad, overlapping fields of view is presented. The result is an algorithm that reconstructs the geometry in front of the robot with only a moderate amount of robot motion. Preliminary results with a three transducer system are shown. The results demonstrate an unusual ability to recover the presence of obstacles even when they are partially masked by closer obstacles. The quality of the reconstruction is limited by the small amplitude of the robot translational motions, by the return signal peak width, and by orientation dead-reckoning error on the robot.<<ETX>>

Abstract:Quercus species are the most frequent autochthonous arboreal taxa in the natural areas of Andalusia region (southern Spain). Due to their abundance and anemophilous character, high airborne pollen concentrations are detected in natural and urban areas of the region. Variations in its reproductive phenology can be considered an important bio-indicator regarding the impacts of climate change on vegetation in the Mediterranean region. This study aims to analyze trends in flowering patterns using airborne pollen concentrations from the capital cities of the 8 provinces of Andalusia region and to study its relationships with meteorological parameters and climate change over decades. Variations in time and intensity of flowering have been studied using different methods for defining the pollen season. This study demonstrates that for comparing results, it is relevant to choose the right definition to calculate the pollen season. The analysis of historical databases of Quercus airborne pollen in Andalusia showed variations in the floral phenology with an increase in the intensity of the pollen season throughout the studied period and an advance in the start trends due to the increase of temperature. Nevertheless, this increase might have been smoothed by the decrease of precipitations in some sampler locations, a limiting factor in the area. It has been also observed a delay in the end dates that caused a lengthening of the season. Climate change could be provoking longer and more intense pollen seasons that will lead to more intense and persistent symptoms in sensitive patients.

Abstract:Mosspheres are a kind of moss transplants which offer a novel approach for detecting atmospheric pollution using devitalized mosses, as they reflect the atmospheric deposition of certain elements and polycyclic hydrocarbons. However, due to the unique features of the mosspheres such as the low elemental concentrations in the cultured material, the data treatment needs to be different from that of conventional biomonitoring studies. In this article, our objectives are to identify the best parameter for expressing the levels of chemical elements accumulated by mosspheres, and to apply a recently developed method to assess the probability of pollution of each sample and of the study area. To do this, we used data from a study in which 81 mosspheres were exposed in a medium-sized city in southwestern Europe. Comparing different pollution indices, we selected the enrichment rate (ER) as the most useful, as it is resilient to fluctuations in the initial concentrations and takes into account the time factor, allowing for greater comparability among studies. Then, we determined that the statistical distribution of the ERs of most elements fitted a normal distribution, showing that most samples did not differ significantly from the background concentrations for these elements. On the other hand, for Ni, Pb and Zn there was a subpopulation of samples above background values. In these cases, we determined the probability of pollution of each sample. Finally, we used indicator kriging to calculate the probability of pollution across the study area, identifying the polluted areas, which for some elements match the distribution of the main industries and highways, indicating that this is a suitable protocol to map elemental pollution in urban areas.

Abstract:Background: Allergy disorders caused by biological particles, such as the proteins in some airborne pollen grains, are currently considered one of the most common chronic diseases, and European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology forecasts indicate that within 15 years 50% of Europeans will have some kind of allergy as a consequence of urbanization, industrialization, pollution, and climate change. Objective: The aim of this study was to monitor and analyze the dissemination of information about pollen symptoms from December 2006 to January 2022. By conducting a comprehensive evaluation of public comments and trends on Twitter, the research sought to provide valuable insights into the impact of pollen on sensitive individuals, ultimately enhancing our understanding of how pollen-related information spreads and its implications for public health awareness. Methods: Using a blend of large language models, dimensionality reduction, unsupervised clustering, and term frequency–inverse document frequency, alongside visual representations such as word clouds and semantic interaction graphs, our study analyzed Twitter data to uncover insights on respiratory allergies. This concise methodology enabled the extraction of significant themes and patterns, offering a deep dive into public knowledge and discussions surrounding respiratory allergies on Twitter. Results: The months between March and August had the highest volume of messages. The percentage of patient tweets appeared to increase notably during the later years, and there was also a potential increase in the prevalence of symptoms, mainly in the morning hours, indicating a potential rise in pollen allergies and related discussions on social media. While pollen allergy is a global issue, specific sociocultural, political, and economic contexts mean that patients experience symptomatology at a localized level, needing appropriate localized responses. Conclusions: The interpretation of tweet information represents a valuable tool to take preventive measures to mitigate the impact of pollen allergy on sensitive patients to achieve equity in living conditions and enhance access to health information and services.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, quantifying the impacts of detrimental air quality has become a global priority for researchers and policy makers. At present, the systems and methodologies supporting the collection and manipulation of this data are difficult to access. To support studies quantifying the interplay between common gaseous and particulate pollutants with meteorology and biological particles, this paper presents a comprehensive data-set containing daily air quality readings from the Automatic Urban and Rural Network, and pollen and weather data from Met Office monitoring stations, in the years 2016 to 2019 inclusive, for the United Kingdom. We describe (1) the sources from which the data were collected, (2) the methods used for the data cleaning process and (3) how issues related to missing values and sparse regional coverage were addressed. The resulting data-set is designed to be used ‘as is’ by those using air quality data for research; we also describe and provide open access to the methods used for curating the data to allow modification of or addition to the data-set.

In a building stock in which mechanical ventilation is not mainstream, it is necessary to evaluate the natural ventilation habits and their impact on indoor air quality. This article describes a methodology to assess indoor air quality using four case studies in which habits and occupancy are representative samples of dwellings in Madrid, Spain. Temperature, relative humidity, formaldehyde, particle matter (PM), and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been measured over several months. The analysis of these values leads to conclusions that each pollutant has a different source. For example, Formaldehyde concentration depends mostly on indoor finishes and materials; indoor activities impact PM concentrations. The results showed high formaldehyde concentrations in the case study decorated with oil paintings, whereas bedrooms with insufficient ventilation showed consistently high CO2 concentrations. Finally, well-ventilated rooms showed high PM concentrations due to the smoking habits and pets that live with the family.

Abstract:Monitoring indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools is critical because children spend most of their daytime inside. One of the main air pollutant sources in urban areas is road traffic, which greatly influences air quality. Thus, this study addresses, in depth, the linkages of meteorology, ambient air pollution, and indoor activities with IAQ in a traffic-influenced school situated south of Madrid. The measurement period was from 22 November to 21 December 2017. Simultaneous measurements of indoor and outdoor PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 mass concentrations, ultrafine particle number concentration (PNC) and equivalent black carbon (eBC) were analyzed under different meteorological conditions. PNC and eBC outdoor concentrations and their temporal trend were similar among the sampling points, with all sites being influenced in the same way by traffic emissions. Strong correlations were found between indoor and outdoor concentrations, indicating that indoor pollution levels were significantly affected by outdoor sources. Especially, PNC and eBC had the same indoor/outdoor (I/O) trend, but indoor concentrations were lower. The time delay in indoor vs. outdoor concentrations varied between 0.5 and 2 h, depending on wind speed. Significant differences were found between different meteorological conditions (ANOVA p-values < 2.14 × 10−6). Atmospheric stability periods led to an increase in indoor and outdoor pollutant levels. However, the highest I/O ratios were found during atmospheric instability, especially for eBC (an average of 1.2). This might be related to rapid changes in the outdoor air concentrations induced by meteorology. Significant variations were observed in indoor PM10 concentrations during classroom occupancy (up to 230 μg m−3) vs. non-occupancy (up to 19 μg m−3) days, finding levels higher than outdoor ones. This was attributed to the scholarly activities in the classroom. Conversely, PNC and eBC concentrations only increased when the windows of the classroom were open. These findings have helped to establish practical recommendations and measures for improving the IAQ in this school and those of similar characteristics.
