Abstract:High concentrations of Al, Li, Ga, rare earth elements and yttrium, U and Ba in the Ordos Basin have been reported separately by lots of authors. These elements have even formed coal-associated deposits in some coalfields. The purpose of this review paper is to summarize their accumulation mechanisms and set up a mode of occurrence of these elements in the entire Ordos Basin. The Al and rare elements show different patterns of distribution and affinity relationships with organic and inorganic matter. The strong peraluminous granites and moyite from the Yinshan Oldland and Lüliang Peninsula may be the main source of the Al and rare elements in the coals. The carriers of barium are witherite and strontianite, both of which are of epigenetic origin. It is inferred that the barium was originated from the Ba-ore deposits in the black shales in the Qinling Mountains, located to the south of the Ordos Basin. Uranium deposits occur near the margin of the basin and are mainly hosted in sandstones of the Jurassic.

Abstract:Modes of occurrence of elements in Ge-rich coals are important because they provide an understanding of Ge mineralization and insight into Ge behavior during coal combustion and the modes of occurrence for Ge in the resulting combustion products. Previous researchers showed that the leaching of granite by N 2 – CO 2 mixed hydrothermal solutions in the Lincang coal in southwest China led to the enrichment of Ge. Elevated Ge concentrations from leaching of granite by hydrothermal solutions have been established in the nearby Lincang Ge ore deposit; however, the influence of hydrothermal solutions, especially mixed hydrothermal solutions, on the modes of occurrence of elements in coal have not been quantitatively analyzed. In this paper, we focus on the quantitative analysis of the influence of mixed hydrothermal solutions on the modes of occurrence of elements in coal. Samples used in this study were collected from the Dazhai Mine, located in the Lincang Ge ore deposit, Yunnan Province, southwestern China. The correlation coefficients between pyrite, ash yield, Al 2 O 3 , and SiO 2 versus elemental concentrations in coal are processed with the correlation analysis algorithm. The results show that a distinct break in pyrite content of ∼16.8 wt.% as a threshold for different elemental modes of occurrence of elements as a result of hydrothermal fluids. The modes of occurrence of As and Hg changes from an organic-inorganic mixed affinity to predominantly in pyrite by the influence of volcanic hydrothermal fluids when the content of pyrite is higher than 16.8 wt.%.

Abstract:<p>To explore the source, migration, and enrichment mechanism of germanium (Ge) and the metallogenic model of the Wulantuga coal-hosted Ge ore deposits in the Shengli Coalfield, this study analyzed the geochemical parameters of Ge-rich coal seams, including major element, trace elements, and rare earth element (REE) compositions, with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). An isoline map of Ge concentration and a cross-section map of sedimentary strata and Ge element distribution were drawn with the sampling data. The results showed that there were three periods of Ge accumulation in the Wulantuga coal seam. The enrichment coefficients of the low-content Ge samples and high-content Ge samples displayed that Ge was enriched together with As, Mo, Sb, and W. Compared with the Ge-bearing parent rocks located southwest of the Wulantuga area, the Ge-rich samples are clearly enriched in heavy REEs relative to light REEs in the REE distribution pattern, with positive anomalies of Tb, Ho, Tm, (La/Yb)n and (La/Sm)n >1, as well as a very high positive δEu anomaly, which indicated that the Ge ore deposit in Wulantuga was indeed likely affected by hydrothermal fluids with a left-slanting REE distribution pattern. In addition, based on the sulfophilic affinity and organic affinity of Ge and the geochemical characteristics of Ge in hydrothermal fluids, the authors speculate that the Ge-rich fluids originated from thermal convection and the interaction between surface freshwater carrying O<sub>2</sub> and hydrothermal fluids from the mantle.</p>

Abstract:This paper provides new geochemical data focusing on valuable elements in the coal, parting, and floor samples in the No. 5 coal seam of the Taiyuan Formation from the Wujiawan mine, Datong coalfield, northern China. The minerals mainly consist of kaolinite, calcite, and pyrite, as well as trace amounts of quartz and illite. The No. 5 coal is enriched in Li, Ga, high field strength elements (HFSEs), and rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) when compared with world hard coals. Of particular interest is the high average concentration of Li (67.66 mu g/g), which is around seven times higher than the value for world hard coals. Lithium, Ga, and HFSEs have strong inorganic affinities, whereas REY have organic affinities. The main carrier of Li, Ga, and HFSEs is aluminosilicate minerals, while REY appear to occur with organophosphorus. These HFSEs are enriched, both in the parting and in the adjacent coal samples. This suggests that these elements are likely to leach out during the diagenetic process. The distribution patterns of REY, along with the ratio of Al2O3/TiO2 and the figure of Zr/TiO2 vs. Nb/Y are suggestive of their derivation from felsic parent material. In the northern and eastern part of the Datong coalfield, there are several regions where the Li content is higher than the mineable grade, in particular in the northern Datong coalfield where there is a mine with an Li content of 294.6 mu g/g. This is significantly higher than the mineable grade. Therefore, there is a potential for financially viable recovery of Li in these coals of the Datong coalfield.

Abstract:This paper describes the modes of occurrence of significantly-enriched barium in a Jurassic coal in the Ordos Basin, northern China. A total of 14 bench samples were taken from a mining face in the Huangling 2 Mine, situated southeastern of the Ordos Basin, China. The coal investigated in this study is characterized by high volatile matter, low ash yield, and low sulfur content. The average content of barium (5728μg/g) is about 36 times higher than that of common Chinese coals. SEM–EDS data show that the carriers of barium are witherite and strontianite, both of which are of epigenetic origin. It is inferred that the barium was originated from the Ba-ore deposits in the black shales in the Qinling Mountains, located to the south of the Ordos Basin.

Abstract:The geological and geochemical controls of the Ge distribution in the Cretaceous Wulantuga high-Germanium coal deposit in the Shengli coal field, Inner Mongolia are investigated. This paper focuses mainly on the spatial distribution of the Ge contents in coal. The high-Ge coals mainly occur in three splits of the #6 coal in the southwestern part of the Shengli coal field. Mean germanium contents in the coal range from 32 to 820 μg/g, with a mean value of 137 μg/g, on a bulk coal basis (mean of 939 coal samples from 75 boreholes in the #6 coal seam) in an area of 2.2 km2. The highest Ge content occurs SW of #6 coal seam, close to the margins of the coal basin, decreasing with a fan-shaped trend towards NW, the direction of the coal basin. There is an negative correlation between the mean Ge content and the thickness of the coal seam. Different distribution patterns of Ge content were found in vertical profiles. High Ge concentrations may occur in the middle parts of coal seams, at the bottom and/or the top of thick coal seams and inconspicuous variation. A major organic affinity was determined for Ge, with a special enriched in the banded bright and semibright coal.

Abstract:Previous studies on modes of occurrence of Li, Ga, and Nb in coal are primarily based upon statistical analyses due to the low concentrations of these elements and the lack of methods of direct analysis. Laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) can be used for the in-situ determination of trace elements in minerals. The strong heterogeneity and diversity of macerals lead to a lack of suitable internal calibration elements required for LA-ICP-MS-based analysis of trace elements in coal, making the determination of trace elements in organic matter in coal challenging. In this study, the previously investigated high-Al and Li-Ga-Nb enriched No. 6 coal in the Haerwusu Mine of the Jungar Coalfield, Ordos Basin, China, was chosen for revealing the distribution and modes of occurrence of Li, Ga, Nb, and rare earth elements (REEs; REY if Y included) in coal, using the LA-ICP-MS method of mapping (imaging) technology. The results indicate that the majority of Ga and Nb present within the coal was concentrated within a specific collotelinite layer. Gallium and Nb have an organic association and are rare within minerals (i.e., clay minerals and boehmite). Lithium is homogeneously distributed throughout the clay minerals in the collodetrinite. Most of the La and Ce in the coal are concentrated in La- and Ce-enriched minerals, including monazite, bastnaesite, and lanthanite. The other REEs are concentrated in the Ga- and Nb-enriched collotelinite, along with small amounts of La and Ce. A similar characterization processing may be used to determine the modes of occurrences of trace elements in other organic-rich rocks or fine-grained sediments.

Abstract:The Mengtuo Basin is proximal to the Bangmai Basin, which holds the world-class coal-hosted Ge deposit and shares the same sediment material provenance as the Lincang batholith. Herein, the mineralogy and geochemistry of Neogene Mengtuo lignite were reanalyzed using supplementary data on major element oxides and minerals. The results indicated that Mengtuo lignite is a medium-ash lignite A. The minerals in lignite are composed of quartz, kaolinite, illite, chamosite, bassanite, and rutile. Compared to common Chinese coals, Mengtuo lignite is significantly enriched in Sb, Cs, and W, enriched in Rb and U, and slightly enriched in Be, As, Cd, Bi, and Th. The rare earth elements plus yttrium (REY) are characterized by significantly positive Ce and Gd anomalies and negative Eu anomalies. A positive Ce anomaly is inherited from the sediment source material. The local Lincang granite around the Mengtuo Basin dominates the mineralogy and geochemistry of lignite and carbonaceous mudstone. Because of the lack of hydrothermal fluids, an indispensable condition for Ge mineralization in the Mengtuo Basin, a large-scale coal-hosted Ge deposit cannot be discovered.

Abstract:Rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) in coal deposits are considered promising alternative sources for these resources owing to their increasing global demand. This paper reports the geochemical characteristics of REY in the Late Permian coals from an underground K1a seam section of the Zhongliangshan coalfield in Chongqing, southwestern China. The mineralogy, degree of enrichment, distribution patterns, modes of occurrence, and sediment origin of REY were investigated. Compared with the average of world coals, the concentration of REY in the K1a coals were normal, dominated by light REY (LREY), with less medium and heavy REY (MREY, HREY). The fractionation degree of the MREY and HREY are higher than that of LREY in most K1a coal samples, deduced from the mixed enrichment type of REY, mainly including M-H-type, and a few L-M type and H-type. In addition, the combination of anomalies of Ce, Eu, Gd, and Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 parameters, the terrigenous materials in the K1a coal were derived from the felsic-intermediate rocks at the top of the Emeishan basalt sequence, and the samples were affected by seawater intrusion during early peat accumulation. Although the minerals primarily consist of kaolinite, illite, pyrite, and small amounts of quartz, calcite and anatase, REY are correlated with ash yield, SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 , revealing that the REY mainly occur in aluminosilicate minerals, especially kaolinite and illite. Meanwhile, REY positively relate to P 2 O 5 and Zr, which may exist in phosphate-containing minerals or zircon. Furthermore, most samples in the K1a coal or ash do not reach the cut-off grade for the beneficial recovery of REY. With the exception of central Guizhou, southwestern Chongqing, and the junction of western Guizhou and northeastern Yunnan, the REY content in coals from southwestern China are high, and its by-products are suitable as potential REY sources.

Abstract:AbstractLead (Pb) has gained much attention since the 1970s because of its potential and cumulative toxicity. As one of the most hazardous elements in coals, Pb can be released into the environment during coal mining, processing, and utilization. This study presents a synthesis on the abundance, distribution, modes of occurrence, and environmental impacts of Pb in Chinese coals. Using the expected coal reserves as the weighting factor and based on the previously published Pb content in 4,304 coal samples (including results obtained in our laboratory) from main coalfields or coal mines in China, the weighted mean Pb content in Chinese coals is 13.0 μg/g, which is higher than that of the American coals (11 μg/g) and average world coals (7.8 μg/g). With respect to regional distribution of Pb in Chinese coals, Pb content can be arbitrarily divided into three groups (<20, 20–40, >40 μg/g). Following this classification, coals from Tibet have the highest average Pb content (128.94 μg/g). The abundance of Pb in coals varies with coal-forming periods and coal ranks, with the late Triassic and higher rank coals having the highest Pb content, which could be ascribed to regional geochemical differences and later geological evolution as well as magma hydrothermal activities. The enrichment of Pb in coals is influenced by several geological factors, including coal-forming plants, source rocks, hydrothermal fluid, and depositional environment. Pb, dominantly associates with sulfide minerals, especially galena in coals. During coal combustion or pyrolysis, Pb is partly emitted into the atmosphere and partly partitioned to solid residues. Accumulation of Pb from coal utilization in human body could lead to a range of health problems and increase the risk of cancer.

Abstract:As a critical element, Li is currently in high demand due to rapid technological development. Anomalous Li enrichment in Pennsylvanian coals, such as those in Shanxi Province, has been discovered in China. Previous studies have shown that Li enrichment in coal and coal-bearing strata in Shanxi Province is generally evident in clay minerals and is related to mineral matter originating from nearby granite or bauxite and, in some cases, it is associated with hydrothermal fluid. Determining the exact sources of Li responsible for the Li enrichment in these coals is essential. This study investigated the spatiotemporal provenance of mineral matter evolution and source-to-sink system of No. 9 coal seam in the Anjialing Mine, Ningwu Coalfield, northeastern Shanxi Province, China. In total, 17 coal samples, six parting samples, one roof sample, and one floor sample from No. 9 coal seam were collected. Geochemical, mineralogical, and geochronological analyses were conducted using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy for minerals, inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP–OES) for major-element oxides, inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) for trace elements, and laser ablation–ICP–MS (LA–ICP–MS) for geochronology. The mineral matter in the coal samples consists mainly of kaolinite, boehmite, quartz, with varying proportions of calcite, pyrite, nacrite, anatase and goyazite, whereas in non-coal samples, the mineral matter is dominated by kaolinite, quartz, with minor amounts of anatase and pyrite. There are two heavy mineral assemblages: titanite–biotite–zircon–apatite and titanite–biotite–anatase–apatite. Relative to the elemental composition of the World hard coal, the coal benches are enriched in Li and Sr and slightly enriched in Ga, Zr, Hf, and Th. Relative to the elemental composition of the World clays, the parting samples in No. 9 coal seam are enriched in Li and slightly enriched in Mo, the roof sample is slightly enriched in Hf, and the floor sample is slightly enriched in Li and Hf. Detrital zircon ages in the roof and floor samples can be divided into two main ages: 2500–1700 and 326–293 Ma. The youngest UPb ages of zircon grain in the roof and floor samples are 292.7 ± 7.1 and 295.5 ± 9.7 Ma, respectively, indicating a well-constrained Early Asselian–Sakmarian stage. Detrital zircons, with ages of 326–293 Ma, in No. 9 coal seam are mainly derived from granitic intrusions and volcanic rocks in the Inner Mongolia Paleo-uplift (IMPU) rather than bauxite deposits. Based on mineralogical, geochemical, and geochronological evidence, the high Li enrichment in the studied samples is mainly caused by detrital material input. The dominant detrital materials in the coal and non-coal samples originate from felsic-intermediate igneous rocks in the IMPU.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) is an important strategic resource, and with the increasing demand for Li, there are some limitations in the exploitation and utilization of conventional deposits such as the pegmatite-type and brine-type Li deposits. Therefore, it has become imperative to search for Li from other sources. Li in coal is thought to be one of the candidates. In this study, the petrology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of No. 21 coal from the Hebi No. 6 mine, Anhe Coalfield, China, was reported, with an emphasis on the distribution, modes of occurrence, and origin of Li. The results show that Li is enriched in the No. 21 coal, and its concentration coefficient (CC) value is 6.6 on average in comparison with common world coals. Lithium in the studied coal is mainly present in aluminosilicates, mainly clay minerals, some of which contain a significant amount of Ti. The Li enrichment in the No. 21 coal is mainly controlled by the terrigenous materials and sourced from the moyite of the Yinshan Upland. Furthermore, Li in the No. 21 coal is more enriched in coals formed in acidic and humid conditions and coals influenced by fresh water during peat accumulation.

Genetic Relationship of Ge-coal Deposit in Shengli Coalfield and Micro-Environment of Coal-Forming Swamp

Abstract:Germanium (Ge) contents of 200 coal samples from 29 boreholes along coal seams were studied. The result is that Ge was found to be distributed inhomogeneously - high content of Ge may appear on the top, middle and bottom of coal seams with the maximum mostly in the middle. This result is different from previous research which found that the maximum content is only at the top or bottom of the coal seams. According to the relation between Ge content and coal facies, Ge content has direct correlation with huminite content (V), ratio V/I, V/w(F+SF) and gelification index, and negative correlation with inertinite content (I), inertinite ratio, transformation index. However, the relationship with tissue preservation index is still unclear. It is concluded that the accumulation of Ge in coal has a genetic relationship with the micro-environment of coal-forming swamp. The favorable Ge accumulation conditions are weak water dynamics, low water level and highly reductive stagnant swamp. 11 refs., 2 figs., 3 tabs.
Environmental geochemical characteristics of Xuanwei Formation coal and their controlling geological factors, with comments on the relationship with lung cancer incidence and distribution

Abstract:This paper attempts to review the environmental geochemical characteristics (re.: enriched elements) in coals of the late Permian Xuanwei Formation of Northwest Yunnan, China, and gauge the possible existence of significant relationships with the incidence and distribution of lung cancer in the region. To achieve this goal, 27 samples were collected in this region; the mineralogical characteristics and major and trace elements were analyzed; the Pb isotopic composition was traced; the contribution of the source rock was calculated; and principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out. Our current findings are summarized as follows: (1) the minerals are mainly quartz (silica), chamosite, calcite, and kaolinite. (2) MnO, SiO 2 , V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, and W are enriched. (3) The LREYs (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, and Eu) and HREYs (Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Y) have similar enrichment degrees, and the fractionation degree of HREYs is higher than LREYs. (4) The source distance restricts the Pb isotope composition. (5) MnO, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, and Cd are controlled by the Emeishan basalt; the origin of SiO 2 (authigenic quartz) is unclear. (6) The lung cancer tissue characteristics, PCA, and toxicological characteristics of elements suggest that the main components of enriched elements probably come from V, Cr, Co, Ni, and Cd, not SiO 2 . In conclusion, the carcinogenic elements V, Cr, Co, Ni, and Cd may be related to lung cancer. Since our study is highly explorative, this result leaves many interesting aspects to be further studied. Abstract:This paper describes the organic geochemical characteristics and their roles on barium enrichment in the No. 2 Coal from Huanglong Jurassic Coalfield, China. A total of 18 bench samples were taken from Huangling Mine 2. The average content of barium (3701 mg/kg) was about 23 times higher than that of common world coals. Terrestrial higher plants were the main coal-forming parent material. Relying on the parameters of OEP, Pr/Ph and so on, there is little correlation between organic geochemical characteristics and barium enrichment. Therefore, organic material has little influence on the process of coal-forming and the enrichment of barium.
Geological Constraints on the Gas-Bearing Properties in High-Rank Coal: A Case Study of the Upper Permian Longtan Formation from the Songzao Coalfield, Chongqing, Southwest China

Abstract:The Permian Longtan Formation in the Songzao coalfield, Southwest China, has abundant coalbed methane (CBM) stored in high-rank coals. However, few studies have been performed on the mechanism underlying the differences in CBM gas content in high-rank coal. This study focuses on the characterization of coal geochemical, reservoir physical, and gas-bearing properties in the coal seams M6, M7, M8, and M12 based on the CBM wells and coal exploration boreholes, discusses the effects of depositional environment, tectono-thermal evolution, and regional geological structure associated with CBM, and identifies major geological constraints on the gas-bearing properties in high-rank coal. The results show that high-rank coals are characterized by high TOC contents (31.49~51.32 wt%), high Tmax and R0 values (averaging 539 °C and 2.17%), low HI values (averaging 15.21 mg of HC/g TOC), high porosity and low permeability, and high gas-bearing contents, indicating a post-thermal maturity and a good CBM production potential. Changes in the shallow bay–tidal flat–lagoon environment triggered coal formation and provided the material basis for CBM generation. Multistage tectono-thermal evolution caused by the Emeishan mantle plume activity guaranteed the temperature and time for overmaturation and thermal metamorphism and added massive pyrolytic CBM, which improved the gas production potential. Good geological structural conditions, like enclosed fold regions, were shown to directly control CBM accumulation.

Elemental Geochemistry and Pb Isotopic Compositions of the Thick No. 7 Coal Seam in the Datun Mining Area, China

Abstract:Thick coal seams recorded abundant petrological, geochemical, and mineralogical information regarding their formation, which in turn can reflect the characteristics of the coal-forming environments, provenance attributes, paleoclimate, and so on. In order to explore the geochemical and lead isotope characteristics of thick coal seams, the No. 7 coal seam in the Datun mining area, Jiangsu Province of China, was selected as the research object. In this work, 29 samples (including coal, roof, and floor rock samples) were collected from three coal mines in the Datun mining area. Through an analysis of the mineral composition and element geochemical characteristics in the coal samples, the enrichment degree of trace elements and modes of rare earth elements were determined. The genetic mechanism of abnormal enrichment of enriched elements is discussed, especially the modes of occurrence and isotope characteristics of Pb. The results showed the following: (1) The main minerals in the coal samples include quartz, potassium feldspar, plagioclase, calcite, dolomite, pyrite, gypsum, and clay minerals, with clay minerals, calcite, quartz, and dolomite being the most common. (2) The major element oxides in coal mainly include SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O, TiO2, P2O5, and FeO. In the vertical direction, the variation of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, K2O, and FeO in coal samples from the three coal mines is consistent. The average value of Al2O3/TiO2 in the samples of Kongzhuang, Longdong, and Yaoqiao coal mines is 28.09–50.52, which basically locates the samples in the felsic source area, such that the sediment source is considered to be felsic source rock. (3) Elements U, La, Pb, and other elements are more enriched in Kongzhuang coal mine samples; elements Th, U, La, Pb, and other elements are more enriched in the Longdong coal mine samples; and elements Th, U, La, Pb, and other elements are more enriched in the Yaoqiao coal mine samples. Furthermore, W is enriched in Yaoqiao mine samples and is highly enriched in Longdong mine samples. The mining area is generally rich in the elements U, La, and Pb. The distribution curves of rare earth elements in the three mines are inclined to the right, with negative Eu anomalies. The enrichment is of the light rare earth enrichment type. (4) Pb isotope data show that the samples from the three mines are mainly distributed in the orogenic belt and the subduction zone lead source areas, where the upper crust and the mantle are mixed, with individual sample points distributed in the mantle and upper crust lead source areas.

Abstract:The Baode block on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin is a key area for the development of low-rank coalbed methane (CBM) in China. In order to find out the genesis of CBM and its storage and seepage space in Baode block, the isotopic testing of gas samples was carried out to reveal the origin of CH4 and CO2, as well, mercury intrusion porosimetry, low temperature nitrogen adsorption, and X-ray CT tests were performed to characterize the pores and fractures in No. 4 + 5 and No. 8 + 9 coal seams. The results showed that the average volume fraction of CH4, N2, and CO2 is 88.31%, 4.73%, and 6.36%, respectively. No. 4 + 5 and No. 8 + 9 coal seams both have biogenic gas and thermogenic methane. Meanwhile, No. 4 + 5 and No. 8 + 9 coal seams both contain CO2 generated by coal pyrolysis, which belongs to organic genetic gas, while shallow CO2 is greatly affected by the action of microorganisms and belongs to biogenic gas. The average proportion of micropores, transition pores, mesopores, and macropores is 56.61%, 28.22%, 5.10%, and 10.07%, respectively. Samples collected from No. 4 + 5 coal seams have developed more sorption pores. Meanwhile, samples collected from No. 8 + 9 coal seams exhibited a relatively low degree of hysteresis (Hg retention), suggesting good pore connectivity and relatively high seepage ability, which is conducive to gas migration. The connected porosity of coal samples varies greatly, mainly depending on the relative mineral content and the proportion of connected pores.

Abstract:The newly found coal-germanium deposit in Shengli Coalfield in Inner Mongolia is a super-scale germanium deposit. It is the largest coal-germanium in the world with 1805 ton proven resource of germanium. In this deposit, the elemental geochemical characteristics show that the alkaline elements, such as Ca, K, Na, Mg, Al, and so on are enriched, and positively correlated to germanium; that with increasing germanium content, LREE enrichment is gradually weakened and HREE is gradually enriched; that the germanium content is negatively correlated to ∑REE and LREE, while positively to LREE/HREE and δEu, and negatively to La/Yb, La/Sm, (La/Yb)n, (La/Sm)n and δCe; that the content of germanium is negatively correlated to ash index of coal. The coal-forming swamp with sluggish water favored the sufficient absorption of germanium from solution by organic matters. The coal-germanium deposit of Shengli Coalfield is formed in the weaker alkaline and stronger reductive environment. REE geochemical characteristics in coal-germanium deposit have inheritance, and REE mainly comes from inorganic materials in the source area. And, the rocks from the southwest margin of the basin are rich in germanium, and probably become the original source of germanium of this coal-germanium deposit. The supply of germanium from the source area and the hydrologic geology conditions for germanium coming into coal forming swamps are the controlling factors for germanium enrichment.
Resources of critical metals in coal-bearing sequences in China: Enrichment types and distribution

Abstract:Coal is a particular sedimentary organic ore and has a huge resource worldwide. Coal is a resource primarily used for electric power generation, and currently supplies 41% of global electricity needs. Significant quantities of coal are also employed in metallurgical processes, gasification, cement industries, and as raw materials for activated carbon and many common and industrial chemicals, as well as for heat for the wallboard, aluminum, and cement industries. A number of coals can also be considered as an economic source of some critical metals, and thus are coal-hosted ore deposits. The critical metals in coal and coal-bearing sequences occur at concentrations comparable to or even higher than those in conventional economic deposits. China is, and in the coming decades should continue to be, the largest producer and user of coal in the world. The high volume of coal usage in China has led to attention not only on the toxic elements that may be released from coal combustion but also on the critical metals that may occur in the coal and coal-bearing sequences, as well as coal combustion by-products. Critical elements (e.g., Ge, Ga, U, rare earth elements and Y, Nb, Zr, Se, V, Re, Au, and Ag, as well as the base metal Al) in a number of coals (or coal ashes) and some coal-bearing strata in China occur at concentrations comparable to or even higher than those in conventional economic deposits. This paper reviewed the distribution and ore-forming mechanism of some typical coal-hosted ore deposits in China, including Ge, Ga-Al, rare earth elements (REE), and Nb-Zr-REE-Ga. Additionally, other critical metals such as Be, Sc, Li, Mg, V, and Re in coal and coal bearing sequences have also been briefly reviewed. Several geological factors are responsible for the deposition of coal-hosted critical metals, including injection of hydrothermal fluids during peat accumulation or later epigenetic stages, deposition of syngenetic alkali volcanic ashes in peat swamp, input of terrigenous mineral matter into the coal-forming environment, leaching of partings by groundwater, and mixed processes involving both hydrothermal solutions and volcanic ash. Mixed processes involving both hydrothermal solutions and volcanic ash are also important geological factors that contribute to the deposition of coal-hosted critical metals. The critical metals in Chinese coal and coal-bearing sequences may be associated with either the organic matter or minerals. For example, germanium exclusively occurs in the organic matter; gallium mainly occurs in boehmite and kaolinite, and to a lesser extent, in the organic matter; rare earth elements and Y occur as carbonate minerals (e.g., florencite and parisite), phosphate minerals (e.g., rhabdophane, silico-rhabdophane, and xenotime), and in part are associated with the organic matter. Some critical metals (e.g., Ge, Al, and Ga) have been successfully extracted at an industrial scale from Chinese coals, and others have significant potential for such extraction. Major challenges remaining for coal scientists include the development of economic extraction methods from coal ash, and the control of toxic elements released during the metal extraction process to protect human health and to avoid environmental pollution.
