Abstract:In this work, a novel method of solid sample pretreatment technique of bismuth fire assay (Bi-FA) combined with solid sample determination by laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS) was reported for the determination of ultra-trace Pt and Pd in geochemical samples. Bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) was used as fire assay collector to directly enrich Pt and Pd from solid samples, and Ag protection cupellation was employed to generate Ag granules. After cleaning, weighing and annealing, the Ag granules were compressed into thin slices and determined by LA-ICP-MS for 195 Pt, 105 Pd and 109 Ag ( 109 Ag was selected as the internal standard isotope). Bi 2 O 3 provided exceptionally low blanks compared to nickel oxide and lead oxide commonly employed in fire assay procedures, and could be applied directly without purification. Different from traditional empirical coefficient method, the Chinese Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for Pt and Pd were treated by the same procedure to obtain completely matrix matched Ag slices. And then modified empirical coefficient method and internal standard calibration strategy was used to reduce the instability of LA-ICP-MS, and random multipoint laser ablation was employed to further reduce analytical variation resulting from heterogeneity of Pt and Pd in the Ag slice. Under optimal conditions, excellent calibration curves for Pt and Pd were obtained (0.407–2958 μg g −1 and 0.407–2636 μg g −1 , respectively), with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.9996. The method detection limits for Pt and Pd were 0.074 and 0.037 ng g −1 , respectively. The established method was applied successfully to analysis of real geochemical samples, with determined values in good agreement with the results of traditional Pb-FA graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS), and spiked recoveries between 87.8 and 125.0%.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), iridium (Ir), and osmiun (Os) are platinum-group elements with similar physic-chemical properties, and have important applications in geochemistry and environmental chemistry. However, due to their low abundance and inhomogeneous distribution in natural ores as well as the nugget effect, the accurate determination of the platinum-group elements has been a challenge for geological analysis. In this work, self-prepared and purified sodium carbonate (NiCO3) instead of commercial nickel oxide (NiO) was used as the fire assay collector in order to greatly reduce the reagent blank and method detection limits. In addition, the fuming time of HClO4 was strictly controlled at 10 min and a high sensitive method was developed for the simultaneous determination of ultra-trace Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, and Ir in minerals by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) following preconcentration with the nickel sulfide fire assay. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges of Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, and Ir were between 0 and 100 ng mL−1, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.9997. The detection limits were 0.015, 0.056, 0.014, 0.004, 0.012 ng mL−1 (for 10 g sample) for Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh and Ir, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to analyze Chinese Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) GBW07288, GBW07289, GBW07290, GBW07291, GBW07292, GBW07293, GBW07294, GBW07101, GBW07102 and GBW07201 and the determined values were in good agreement with the certified values. The relative standard deviations (n = 5) of Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh and Ir were between 3.42% and 6.87% for the determination of GBW07291.

Abstract:Background: Platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh) and iridium (Ir) are platinum group elements (PGEs) and also important elements of geochemistry and environmental chemistry with the similar physic-chemical properties, which have been widely used in industry and laboratory. However, due to the low abundance and inhomogeneous distribution in natural ore as well as the nugget effect, the accurate determination of PGEs has been a challenge to analytical chemistry. Methods: In this work, a novel fire assay method was reported for the determination of ultra-trace Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir in geochemical samples. Tin powder (Sn) instead of stannic oxide (SnO 2 ) was used as a fire assay collector to reduce the melting temperature from 1250°C to 1050°C, the escape of molten material caused by high temperature was successfully avoided. Tin bead was compressed into thin slice and dissolved by HCl. For the target Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir, HCl insoluble substance such as PtSn 4 , PdSn 4 , RhSn 4 and Ir 3 Sn 7 were formed and separated from matrix by filtering. The metal compounds precipitate together with filter paper were microwave-assisted completely digested by aqua regia (50%, v/v), thence the sample solution was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results: Compared with nickel oxide and lead oxide in nickel sulfide /lead fire assay, the reagent blank of tin powder were relatively low and could be directly employed in tin fire assay to collect Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir without purifying. Moreover, the harm of nickel oxide and lead oxide to the analyst and environment was avoided by using the non-toxic tin powder. The decomposition method of chromite and black shale was investigated as well as the amount of tin powder and flour, microwave digestion program for the determination of Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir were optimized. Besides, the influence of mass spectrum interference of co-existing elements was discussed and the standard mode and kinetic energy discrimination collision pool mode were compared. Under the optimal conditions, excellent curve fitting of Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir were obtained between 0.01~100 ng mL -1 , with the correlation coefficients exceeding 0.9996. The detection limits were from 0.003 ng g -1 to 0.057 ng g -1 . Conclusion: The developed method was applied to analyze the Chinese Certified Reference Materials and the determined values were in good agreement with the certified values.

Abstract:The evaluation of the flow direction of platinum group elements (PGEs) during gold-copper ore mining is challenging due to the uneven distribution and low content. Therefore, it is vital to accurately and simultaneously determine ultra-trace PGEs Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ir in gold mining residue samples. In this study, a method to simultaneously determine ultra-trace Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ir in gold mining residue is reported using Sb–Cu fire assay, microwave digestion, and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The Sb–Cu fire assay was used to enrich Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ir, obtaining Sb–Cu alloy particles that concentrate these elements. An optimal microwave method was employed to digest the Sb–Cu alloy particles. In ICP-MS, the collision reaction interface was used to eliminate the interferences of other elements and improve the accuracy. Moreover, the matrix-matched multi-external standards combined with internal standard calibration were utilized to reduce the error. High concentrations of Au, Ag, and Pb showed no interferences with Pt, Pd, Rh, or Ir determination. The limits of detection for Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ir were 0.018, 0.052, 0.064, 0.035 ng·g −1 , respectively, and the relative standard deviation was 5.18, 4.66, 1.55, and 3.17%. Additionally, the determination of Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ir in standard reference materials showed good agreement with the certified values. In summary, a reliable and efficient method is provided to determine various PGEs which is of great significance for gold-copper ore mining.

Abstract:Recent advances in sample digestion, separation and instrumental measurement for analysis of platinum group elements (PGE) in geological samples are reviewed.The low concentration of the PGE in most of the geological samples and their heterogeneous distributions (nugget effect) make accurate determination of PGE very difficult.Separation of PGE from sample matrix are required to reduce nugget effect, to minimize the blank level and detection limits, and to avoid interferences.Fire assay, acid treatment, alkali fusion and Carius tube techniques for digesting geological samples, tellurium coprecipitation and ion exchange methods for separating PGE from the matrix, atomic absorption spectrometry(AAS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES), instrumental neutron activation analysis(INAA) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for determination of PGE, are reviewed in this paper.Because of the diverse contents and distributions of PGE in geological samples, the analytical methods should be used suitably for routine analysis.According to the advantages and disadvantages of each method and the experience of our laboratory, this paper also summarizes the suitable digestion and pre-concentrating methods for different geological samples.
Combined use of multiple external and internal standards in LA-ICP-MS analysis of bulk geological samples using lithium borate fused glass

Abstract:We describe a method for LA-ICP-MS elemental analysis of geological materials using low-dilution Li-borate fused glass WDXRF pellets, with samples, drift monitor, and 18 reference materials (RMs) identically prepared. After analysis for 46 elements by WDXRF, LA-ICP-MS intensities from samples and RMs are collected, and background corrected with Iolite software. HALite , a new software application, was developed to derive the elemental compositions from the LA-ICP-MS net signals. In HALite , elements are drift corrected using polynomial functions, and flux-fused RM element sensitivities are calculated from known mass fractions. Multiple internal standard (IS) elements are used to model each sample's laser response. Analyte mass fractions in unknowns are determined using the calibrated sensitivity correlation models for multiple IS elements. Either the WDXRF mass fractions or the initial round of calculated LA-ICP-MS mass fractions are used to calculate weighted mean sensitivities. Validation experiments with flux-fused RMs run as unknowns yield results with less than 5-10% total relative uncertainty for most analytes. We derive equations which allow calculation of the precision and total uncertainty as a function of mass fraction for each analyte element. Abstract:Sulfur isotopes serve as critical tracers for understanding the material sources and cycling in earth science. The in situ sulfur isotope ratio analysis by laser ablation multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) has been a proven important technique, yet the precision and accuracy of measurement are limited by matrix-matched reference materials. In this study, we investigated three new potential reference materials (pyrite NWU-Py, gypsum NWU-Gy and arsenopyrite NWU-Apy) for sulfur isotope ratio analysis by LA-MC-ICP-MS. The ultra-fine powders of pyrite, gypsum and arsenopyrite were synthesized into a solid block using the fast-hot-pressing sintering method (FHP). The reliability of these reference materials was evaluated by large quantities of sulfur isotope measurements by LA-MC-ICP-MS, with mean δ 34 S values of 3.48 ± 0.26‰ (2SD, n = 787) for NWU-Py, 18.19 ± 0.32‰ (2SD, n = 290) for NWU-Gy, and −0.19 ± 0.32‰ (2SD, n = 383) for NWU-Apy, which are highly consistent with those obtained from isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Furthermore, the F -testing and H-index indicate that the three materials have excellent homogeneity of sulfur isotope compositions. Therefore, NWU-Py, NWU-Gy, and NWU-Apy can serve as bracketing matrix-matched reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope measurement by LA-MC-ICP-MS.

Abstract:Constraints on accurate quantitative trace element and sulfur (S) isotope analysis of sulfide minerals, especially pyrite, by laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) remain imperfectly understood at the present time. Mapping of S isotope distributions within a complex sample containing several minerals requires an evaluation of the matrix effects and accuracy. Here, we apply LA-Q(quadrupole)-ICP-MS and LA-MC(multiple collector)-ICP-MS methods to analyze trace elements and S isotopes in sulfides. Spot analysis of S isotopes was conducted to evaluate the influence of matrix effects. The matrix effects from siderite and magnetite are deemed to be negligible in mapping analysis at the precision of this study. Both Fe and S were used as internal standard elements to normalize trace element concentrations in pyrite. Fe proved to be the better choice because the normalized counts per second ratio of trace elements with Fe is much more stable than if using S. A case study of a sulfide sample from the Chengmenshan Cu deposit, Jiangxi Province, South China, demonstrates the potential of combined S isotope and trace element mapping by LA-(MC)-ICP-MS. The results suggest that this deposit underwent multi-stage ore formation. Elements, including Au and Ag, were hosted in early-stage pyrite but were re-concentrated into multi-component sulfide assemblages during a late-stage hydrothermal event, which also led to crosscutting veins containing pyrite largely devoid of trace elements, except Se. Combining in situ S isotope and trace element analysis on the same sample represents a powerful tool for understanding ore-forming processes.

Abstract:Bulk chemical composition analysis is a primary and pivotal analytical task for extraterrestrial geological samples (e.g., lunar soil, asteroids, or meteoroids). However, the analysis of mg-level consumption of extraterrestrial geological samples poses a significant challenge to existing analytical techniques. In this study, a new method was developed for trace elements determination in bulk extraterrestrial geological samples prepared as lithium borate glasses, following customized procedures for X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis with 10 mg sample by femtosecond LA-ICP-MS. All thirty-two trace elements in the borate glass samples were evenly distributed with homogeneity indices (H) < Hcrit. For the borate glass samples, Si was more suitable as an internal standard for Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, whereas Al was better for the others. The femtosecond laser greatly reduces the influence of matrix effect, making calibration by non-matrix-matched external standards (NIST 612 and 614) accurate. Although the mass ratio of the flux and sample was as high as 35:1, the analytical results of 32 trace elements in six silicate rock reference materials (covering mafic to felsic rock types) using the developed technique were consistent with the reference values within 10% for most elements, and analytical precision (RSD) was also within 10% for most elements. Finally, one lunar basalt (NWA14526) and one shergottite (NWA13190) were assayed using the proposed method, and a comparison with the results of solution nebulization (SN)-ICP-MS confirmed the reliability of the method. The proposed method, combined with XRF, achieved the rapid, simultaneous, and accurate determination of major and trace elements in the same small sample aliquot (10 mg), which is highly suitable for the analysis of extraterrestrial geological samples.

High Precision In-Situ Pb Isotopic Analysis of Sulfide Minerals by Femtosecond Laser Ablation Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:An in-situ microanalysis of Pb isotopic compositions in sulfide minerals is carried out by using femtosecond laser-ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(fs LA-MC-ICP-MS).High-temperature-activated carbon was used to filter Hg contained in the carrier gas,which reduced the Hg background signal by 48%and also lowered the detection limit of the analysis.Fractionation and mass discrimination effects existing in the ICP-MS analytical processes were corrected using an internal reference Tl in conjunction with an external reference NIST SRM 610.The proposed method was used to analyze the Pb isotopic compositions of chalcopyrite,pyrite,and sphalerite from the Dulong Sn-Zn-In polymetallic ore district.The results showed that in this ore district,the sulfide minerals and different grains of the same sulfide mineral show a large variation in Pb content up to 1000-fold.The studied pyrites show relatively higher Pb contents and homogeneous Pb isotopic compositions,whereas the sphalerites have low Pb contents but most variable Pb isotopic compositions.It is suggested that the large variation of Pb isotopic composition may reflect a late hydrothermal superimposition on the primary sulfide formation.In addition,radiogenic Pb accumulated by radioactive decay of trace amounts of U over time in the host minerals may also be one of the causes for the large variation range of Pb content and Pb isotopic composition of those low-Pb sphalerites.Chalcopyrite and sphalerite grains with Pb content greater than 10 ppm presented a consistent Pb isotopic distribution,whereas all the sulfide grains with Pb content greater than 100 ppm had consistent Pb isotopic composition within 2s measurement uncertainties.The in-situ analysis of Pb isotopic composition agreed well with the results obtained by conventional chemical methods within2s measurement uncertainties,indicating that the data obtained by fs LA-MC-ICP-MS are reliable.Additionally,this study indicates that the Pb isotopic composition could truthfully record the source of ore-forming minerals only for sulfide minerals with high Pb content.On the contrary,the Pb isotopic composition of low-Pb sulfide minerals may be affected by trace amounts of U in the host minerals that may lead to a highly radiogenic Pb isotope ratio.Alternatively,it is also possible that late fluid metasomatic overprinting may alter the Pb isotopic compositions.

Abstract:The standard addition method (SA) has been successfully employed in measuring metal-stable isotopes in recent years. Here, utilizing hydride generation (HG)-multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS, Nu Plasma II and Neptune Plus), we evaluated the method's robustness through achieving the high-precision δ 123 Sb(antimony) values (relative to NIST 3102a) in samples with more complex matrices and low-Sb concentrations. By using element doping ( 113/111 cadmium) coupled with sample-standard bracketing (SSB), a mass discrimination correction model was presented. The Sb isotope ratios of 30 geological reference materials (GRMs) were reported, in which the selected GRMs agreed well with previously published values. The SA method was then used to determine four of these with low-Sb samples. The analytical precision (2 standard deviations: 2SD) was found to mainly depend on the sample fraction(fspl) in SA, with the ideal mixing range recommended to be f spl ≥ 0.5 for single- and ≥0.45 for double SA when expected precision is ≤ 0.09‰ (2SD). The δ 123 Sb ratio calculated for basalt BCR-2 (Sb = 0.30 μg g -1 ) was 0.28 ± 0.09‰, and together with other four GRMs, confirmed that the accurate and precise Sb isotopes can be analyzed for samples with low-Sb samples using SA. Validating the measurement of Sb isotope composition in low-Sb samples with complex matrices by SA will expand the application of Sb isotopes in environmental, agricultural, life, Earth, and Planetary sciences.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REE) are widely used as important geochemical tracers in earth and planetary sciences. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) techniques have been routinely used for the determination of REE concentrations in various minerals. Nevertheless, it is challenging to determine ultra-low REE contents (down to ng g-1). Cassiterite with ng level REE contents shows false positive Gd and Tb anomalies in various datasets obtained by LA-ICP-MS. Herein, a novel analytical protocol for accurate determination of ultra-trace REE by LA-ICP-MS/MS is developed using oxygen as reaction gas in mass shift mode, which avoids analytical artifacts caused by polyatomic interferences. Its application to cassiterite effectively eliminates Gd and Tb false positive anomalies. Both laser and solution cassiterite results have been used to testify the robustness of our protocol. The accuracy and precision of our approach, tested using the glass reference materials NIST 612 and NIST 614, is better than 10%. Our method can greatly facilitate analysis of other geological, archeological, environmental materials with large amounts of tin in the matrix that disturbs REE measurement.

Abstract:Key Points Three phosphate matrix reference materials for LA‐ICP‐MS were prepared. Most elements in these matrix reference have good homogeneity and stability. The preliminary reference values and standard uncertainties are obtained by bulk analysis in eight laboratories. A series of three CGSP‐P phosphate matrix reference materials, with variable element mass fractions, were synthesised by co‐precipitation with CaCl2 and (NH4)3PO4 to form a hydroxylapatite matrix. Each powder sample was packaged into multiple bottles and pressed into tablets as replicates. The within‐bottle homogeneity was evaluated by the repeatability of element mass fractions of six spots in per tablet of CGSP‐Ps by LA‐ICP‐MS. For the between‐bottle homogeneity evaluation, one approach adopted the % RSD of element mass fractions in twelve different tablets from twelve bottles in the same reference material in comparison with the repeatability field of LA‐ICP‐MS analyses obtained from homogeneous glasses, and the other used a one‐way analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach. Most of the elements (e.g., Mg, Ca, P, Mn and REE) were homogenous within 10% RSD, and other elements (e.g., Si, Al, K, Rb, Cs and Ni) were considered heterogeneous (with > 20% RSD). All of the elements passed the t‐test except Ni in CGSP‐P3, and V, Cr, Ni, Zr, Gd, Dy and Th in CGSP‐P4 after a 29‐month period stability examination by LA‐ICP‐MS. The preliminary reference values and standard uncertainties for CGSP‐Ps are given with a network of methods and eight laboratories by bulk analysis according to ISO Guide 35:2006 and JJF 1343‐2012.

A Non-Matrix-Matched Calibration Method for In Situ Major and Trace Element Analysis of Scheelite by Nanosecond LA-ICP-MS

Abstract:In this work, a reliable and robust in situ non-matrix-matched calibration method is proposed for element composition determination in scheelite samples. With external calibration against the silicate glass standard reference material NIST SRM 610, the concentrations of both major elements (Ca and W) and trace elements (Si, Fe, Mo, Y, rare earth elements, etc.) in scheelite are determined using an ArF 193 nm excimer nanosecond laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS). Here, the ablation was performed by hole drilling under a helium (He) environment using a laser spot size of 35 μm and a laser repetition of 5 Hz, and the aerosols were then transported to a quadrupole ICP-MS by a mixture of He and make-up gas argon (Ar) with a total gas flow rate of 1.6 L/min. Results showed that there was no apparent matrix effect between the NIST SRM 610 and scheelite by this proposed method. With internal standardization against W, the obtained concentrations of CaO and WO3 were found to yield an average matrix CaO/WO3 mass fraction ratio of 0.245 (2σ = 0.003, n = 19), which agreed well with the value of 0.243 (2σ = 0.002, n = 15) from electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Furthermore, the accuracy of trace element analyses with this proposed non-matrix-matched calibration in situ method was evaluated by comparing the concentration results with those from bulk analysis by solution nebulizer ICP-MS (SN-ICP-MS). It was found that the quantification results from LA-ICP-MS and SN-ICP-MS were comparable, in particular showing a relative concentration bias of the total ∑REE+Y contents of less than 2%. This confirmed that scheelites can be accurately analyzed in situ by LA-ICP-MS without matrix-matched calibration standards. By using this developed in situ method, the element compositions in a series of scheelite samples from different W-associated deposits in China were successfully quantified, promising further genetic process investigation and associated geologic activities of the polymetallic resources.

Abstract:The sulfur isotope system is important in tracing a variety of geochemical processes. However, the availability of matrix‐matched reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope ratio measurement is limited. This study analysed four sulfide specimens to investigate their potential as reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope determination, including three natural sulfide minerals (sphalerite SPH‐1, chalcopyrite GC‐1, galena NWU‐GN), and one resin preserved pyrite powder (RPPY). These four sulfides were analysed independently in four laboratories using both bulk and microbeam analysis techniques, all of which gave equivalent results within uncertainty with comparable accuracy and precision. The sulfur isotopes of these four sulfides are homogeneous based on a large number of isotope determinations by solution nebulisation multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS) and laser ablation (LA) MC‐ICP‐MS. The mean δ34S values for SPH‐1, RPPY, GC‐1 and NWU‐GN determined by gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GS‐IRMS) and solution nebulisation MC‐ICP‐MS are ‐7.13 ± 0.41‰ (2s), 3.66 ± 0.24‰ (2s), ‐0.65 ± 0.28‰ (2s), 28.21 ± 0.17‰ (2s) relative to the Vienna‐Canyon Diablo troilite (V‐CDT) reference value, respectively, and which are proposed as potential preferred values. Over 400 spot analyses performed on randomly selected fragments of each sulfide by LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS yielded highly consistent δ34S values with the preferred values. Thus, SPH‐1, GC‐1, NWU‐GN and RPPY are considered a set of candidate matrix‐matched sulfide reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope determination.

Abstract:A method combining inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was developed for multielement determination of 50 species of major, minor, micro, and trace, rare earth, and rare elements in geological samples. The geological samples of stream sediment, soil, and rock were dissolved with HCl-HNO3-HF-HClO4. The instrumental operating parameters were optimized, and the best analytical parameters were determined. The influences of ICP-OES and ICP-MS interferences were investigated. The optimal spectral lines and best isotopes were chosen, and the internal standard elements of 185Re and 103Rh were selected to compensate for signals drifting and for matrix effects. Therefore, the standard solutions were prepared by simultaneously dissolving the certified reference material (CRM) with the samples. The elements of Ti, V, Mn, Ba, Sr, Li, Be, Sc, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb were determined by both ICP-MS and ICP-OES, which show a good correlation between measured values. The methods were used to determine the CRM of stream sediment (GBW07301a, GBW07365), soil (GBW07408, GBW07452) and rock (GBW07107, GBW07121 and GBW07122), and the determined results were in agreement with the certified values for simultaneous determination of 50 elements for bulk geological samples.

Abstract:This study investigated the influences of plasma condition, concentration effect, ablation position and on-line addition of an aqueous Ni standard for non-matrix-matched Fe isotopic analysis by femtosecond laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fs LA–MC–ICP–MS). Deviations up to ~0.7‰ in δ56Fe values caused by non-matrix-matched analyses were difficult to eliminate under dry plasma condition even with fs-LA. However, the nebulized water after the ablation cell efficiently reduces or eliminates the matrix-dependent fractionation of Fe isotopes without reducing signal intensity. Furthermore, concentration- and position-dependent fractionation of Fe isotopes was not observed under wet plasma condition. For instrumental mass bias correction, the standard–sample bracketing (SSB) method and SSB with Ni doping (SSB + Ni) were performed in the presence of nebulized water with fs LA–MC–ICP–MS. Results indicate that both the SSB and SSB + Ni methods are sufficient to correct for instrumental mass bias under wet plasma condition, with the SSB + Ni method being more effective in calibrating short-term fluctuations in mass bias with improved external reproducibility of ~0.15‰ (2SD) for δ56Fe values. Compared to SN–MC–ICP–MS, deteriorated precision offered by fs LA–MC–ICP–MS may represent a major limitation for some applications relying upon precise Fe isotope ratio measurements. This approach for non-matrix-matched analysis of Fe isotopes by fs LA–MC–ICP–MS under wet plasma condition combined with the SSB + Ni method allows for more flexibility in tracing detailed geological processes with large Fe isotope fractionation of a wide range of solids. Relatively precise and accurate Fe isotopic compositions of potential reference materials of Balmat pyrite (δ56Fe = −1.32 ± 0.12‰, δ57Fe = −1.91 ± 0.20‰; 2SD, n = 166) and PZH12–24 ilmenite (δ56Fe = −0.38 ± 0.15‰, δ57Fe = −0.57 ± 0.23‰; 2SD, n = 134) were obtained using this analytical protocol, consistent with reference values obtained by solution nebulization (SN)–MC–ICP–MS within analytical uncertainties (Balmat pyrite: δ56Fe = −1.30 ± 0.04‰, δ57Fe = −1.94 ± 0.07‰, 2SD, n = 3; PZH12–24 ilmenite: δ56Fe = −0.38 ± 0.06‰, δ57Fe = −0.55 ± 0.07‰, 2SD, n = 6).

Abstract:: Sulfate minerals are widely distributed in nature, and their sulfur isotopic signatures offer a largely untapped source of potential information for improving our understanding of magmatic, hydrothermal, and sedimentary processes. In this study, we describe an analytical procedure for measuring the sulfur isotopic compositions of natural sulfate-bearing samples using a LA-MC-ICP-MS (laser ablation multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) technique. YF-2 barite (BaSO 4 ) from the Yongfu hydrothermal deposit yields a δ 34 S value of 18.1 ± 0.4‰ (n = 11, 2SD), obtained by elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS), and has been adopted as the reference material for sulfur isotopic determination in this study. The sulfur isotopic ratios for NBS 127 and IAEA-SO-5 barium sulfate are validated by using YF-2 pressed powder tablets as the internal reference standard, and this analytical protocol yielded results that overlap with recommended values. The δ 34 S values obtained here for the YF-1, GTS, and DGD barites are similar to those recorded by EA-IRMS for these samples. WC barite displays highly variable sulfur isotopic compositions, although the average δ 34 S value for WC barite is similar to that obtained by EA-IRMS. Sulfates in the barite-celestine solid solution series and anhydrite were analyzed to determine the isotopic fractionation in varied matrices using both the RESOlution and GeoLasHD laser ablation systems. The analytical results suggest minimal sulfur isotopic fractionation between barite and other S-bearing matrices using both laser systems. For non-matrix matched sulfur isotope analysis, the ion signal intensity and laser parameters are important parameters that must be closely monitored. If sulfur isotopic fractionation is observed during sample ablation, this feature can be minimized by employing a smaller beam size, lower repetition rate and fluence output.

Abstract:A new reference material, STDGL3, for the calibration of in situ analyses of sulfide minerals by LA‐ICP‐MS has been developed and characterised. It represents a lithium‐borate‐based glass containing a mixture of Zn‐ and Fe‐sulfide concentrates doped with several chalcophile elements as well as Zr, Gd, Hf and Ta required for assessing common interferences on Ag, Au and Pt. STDGL3 has a wider range of elements and a better homogeneity compared with existing reference materials for LA‐ICP‐MS analysis of sulfides. Compositional variations for most elements are below 3% RSD, below 5% RSD for Ag, Au and Pt, and below 7% RSD for Se, when performing spot analyses with a 50 μm beam size. Its preparation recipe is reproducible allowing for multiple batches to be made. Use of STDGL3 significantly improves accuracy of sulfide mineral analysis by LA‐ICP‐MS when compared with use of other available reference materials. Performance of STDGL3 was evaluated using several different laser systems. No significant change was observed between 193 nm ArF excimer lasers with 5 and 20 ns pulse widths, but use of 213 and 248 nm lasers displays more systematic differences, especially when analysing galena. Correction coefficients are needed for some elements (Zn and Cd in particular) when analysing sulfide minerals using STDGL3 as a calibration reference material.
