Abstract:Nuclear pre–messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) splicing is an essential processing step for the production of mature mRNAs from most eukaryotic genes. Splicing is catalyzed by a large ribonucleoprotein complex, the spliceosome, which is composed of five small nuclear RNAs and more than 100 protein factors. Despite the complexity of the spliceosome, the chemistry of the splicing reaction is simple, consisting of two consecutive transesterification reactions. The presence of introns in spliceosomal RNAs of certain fungi has suggested that splicing may be reversible; however, this has never been demonstrated experimentally. By using affinity-purified spliceosomes, we have shown that both catalytic steps of splicing can be efficiently reversed under appropriate conditions. These results provide considerable insight into the catalytic flexibility of the spliceosome.

Abstract:Use of wireless sensor network for health care and human rescue missions have resulted in an improved performance and reliability along with achieving high speed, energy efficiency. This paper suggests Modular Wireless Sensor Network (MWSN) can be applied to the system architecture for autonomous drone based on dual hardware platform, Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Using ZigBee and Bluetooth, our system consists of a fleet wireless sensor network for unmanned aerial vehicle that can move autonomously for the assisting rescue operation. For protecting against unforeseen emergencies in the inaccessible place for safety reasons, our MWSN architecture is helpful to save people effectively.
Conditions for transplantation of primordial germ cells in the yellowtail tetra, Astyanax altiparanae

Abstract:Biotechniques, including surrogate propagation derived from primordial germ cell (PGC) transplantation, are valuable tools for the reconstitution of endangered fish species. Although promising, there are no previous studies reporting such approaches using neotropical fish species. The aim of this study was to establish germline chimeras in neotropical fish by using the yellowtail tetra Astyanax altiparanae as a model species of the order Characiformes. Germline chimeras were obtained after transplantation of PGCs cultivated under different conditions: saline medium and supplemented with DMEM, amino acids, vitamins, glutamine, pyruvate, and fetal bovine serum, and subsequently transplanted into A. altiparanae triploids and triploid hybrids from the cross between A. altiparanae (♀) and A. fasciatus (♂). The results indicate ectopic migration in host embryos after transplantation of PGCs cultivated in saline medium. However, PGCs cultivated in supplemented medium migrated to the region of the gonadal ridge in 4.5% of triploid and 19.3% in triploid hybrid. In addition, the higher expression of dnd1, ddx4 and dazl genes was found in PGCs cultivated in supplemented culture medium. This indicates that the culture medium influences the maintenance and development of the cultivated cells. The expression levels of nanos and cxcr4b (related to the differentiation and migration of PGCs) were decreased in PGCs from the supplemented culture medium, supporting the results of ectopic migration. This is the first study to report the transplantation of PGCs to obtain germline chimera in neotropical species. The establishment of micromanipulation procedures in a model neotropical species will open new insights for the conservation of endangered species.

Abstract:Piracanjunba (Brycon orbignyanus) is an endangered South American fish, and ovarian tissue cryopreservation is an alternative method for preserving maternal germplasm and genetic diversity. Therefore, our aim was to test a vitrification protocol for ovarian tissue containing primary growth (PG) oocytes of B. orbignyanus as a strategy to avoid the threat of extinction. Two vitrification solutions were evaluated (VS1: 1.5 M methanol + 4.5 M propylene glycol and VS2: 1.5 M methanol + 5.5 M Me2SO) and compared using control/fresh ovarian tissue. After vitrification, the following factors were analyzed: membrane integrity using trypan blue, morphology using a histological assessment, oxidative stress (total reactive antioxidant potential (TRAP) and reduced thiol [-SH]), mitochondrial activity using MTT, and DNA damage using a comet assay. The vitrified oocytes (VS1 = 24.3 ± 0.49% and VS2 = 24.8 ± 0.69%) showed higher DNA damage than the control group (control = 20.7 ± 1.03%) (P = 0.004). In contrast, in most evaluations (membrane integrity, membrane damage, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial activity), there were no discernible differences between the control group and the vitrified samples. In addition, oocyte (P = 0.883) and nuclear diameter (P = 0.118) did not change after vitrification. VS2 treatment resulted in higher nuclear damage (15.7 ± 1.45%) than in the control treatment (3.5 ± 1.19%); however, VS1 treatment did not result in significantly more damage (9.5 ± 3.01%) than in the control (P = 0.015). Therefore, the protocol for ovarian tissue vitrification tested in this study resulted in high maintenance of PG oocyte cell integrity, making it a promising alternative for B. orbignyanus maternal genome preservation.
Traceability of primordial germ cells in three neotropical fish species aiming genetic conservation actions

Abstract:Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are embryonic pluripotent cells that can differentiate into spermatogonia and oogonia, and therefore, PGCs are a genetic source for germplasm conservation through cryobanking and the generation of germline chimeras. The knowledge of PGC migration routes is essential for transplantation studies. In this work, the mRNA synthesized from the ddx4 3'UTR sequence of Pseudopimelodus mangurus, in fusion with gfp or dsred, was microinjected into zygotes of three neotropical species (P. mangurus, Astyanax altiparanae, and Prochilodus lineatus) for PGC labeling. Visualization of labeled PGCs was achieved by fluorescence microscopy during embryonic development. In addition, ddx4 and dnd1 expressions were evaluated during embryonic development, larvae, and adult tissues of P. mangurus, to validate their use as a PGC marker. As a result, the effective identification of presumptive PGCs was obtained. DsRed-positive PGC of P. mangurus was observed in the hatching stage, GFP-positive PGC of A. altiparanae in the gastrula stage, and GFP-positive PGCs from P. lineatus were identified at the segmentation stage, with representative labeling percentages of 29% and 16% in A. altiparanae and P. lineatus, respectively. The expression of ddx4 and dnd1 of P. mangurus confirmed the specificity of these genes in germ cells. These results point to the functionality of the P. mangurus ddx4 3'UTR sequence as a PGC marker, demonstrating that PGC labeling was more efficient in A. altiparanae and P. lineatus. The procedures used to identify PGCs in P. mangurus consolidate the first step for generating germinal chimeras as a conservation action of P. mangurus.
Primordial germ cell identification and traceability during the initial development of the Siluriformes fish Pseudopimelodus mangurus

Abstract:Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are responsible for generating all germ cells. Therefore, they are essential targets to be used as a tool for the production of germline chimeras. The labeling and route of PGCs were evaluated during the initial embryonic development of Pseudopimelodus mangurus, using whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH) and mRNA microinjection in zygotes. A specific antisense RNA probe constituted by a partial coding region from P. mangurus nanos3 mRNA was synthesized for the WISH method. RNA microinjection was performed using the GFP gene reporter regulated by translation regulatory P. mangurus buc and nanos3 3'UTR sequences, germline-specific markers used to describe in vivo migration of PGCs. Nanos3 and buc gene expression was evaluated in tissues for male and female adults and initial development phases and larvae from the first to seventh days post-hatching. The results from the WISH technique indicated the origin of PGCs in P. mangurus from the aggregations of nanos3 mRNA in the cleavage grooves and the signals obtained from nanos3 probes corresponded topographically to the migratory patterns of the PGCs reported for other fish species. Diffuse signals were observed in all blastomeres until the 16-cell stage, which could be related to the two sequences of the nanos3 3'UTR observed in the P. mangurus unfertilized egg transcriptome. Microinjection was not successful using GFP-Dr-nanos1 3'UTR mRNA and GFP-Pm-buc 3'UTR mRNA and allowed the identification of potential PGCs with less than 2% efficiency only and after hatching using GFP-Pm-nanos3 3'UTR. Nanos3 and buc gene expression was reported in the female gonads and from fertilized eggs until the blastula phase. These results provide information about the PGC migration of P. mangurus and the possible use of PGCs for the future generation of germline chimeras to be applied in the conservation efforts of Neotropical Siluriformes species. This study can contribute to establishing genetic banks, manipulating organisms, and assisting in biotechnologies such as transplanting germ cells in fish.
Spermatogonia From Cryopreserved Testes of Critically Endangered Chinese Sturgeon Efficiently Colonized and Preferentially Proliferated in the Recipient Gonads of Yangtze Sturgeon

Abstract:The critically endangered Chinese sturgeon, Acipenser sinensis, presents late sexual maturity and has a large body size. Germ cell transplantation is a powerful technique for the production of gametes from large-bodied species in closely related recipients with a smaller body size and shorter generation time. To accelerate reproduction of Chinese sturgeon, donor spermatogonia collected from the cryopreserved testes of 3-year-old Chinese sturgeon were intraperitoneally transplanted into 7–8 days post-hatch larvae of Yangtze sturgeon (Acipenser dabryanus) with shorter generation interval. At 2 months post-transplantation (mpt), donor spermatogonia had colonized in the 81.25% of recipient gonads, with average numbers about two times those of endogenous primordial germ cells. Within the next 2 months, the rate of endogenous germ cell division in females (2–3 times) was faster than that in males (once), whereas colonized donor-derived spermatogonia divided about 2–3 times and twice in recipient females and males, respectively. Furthermore, the expression of germ cell-related genes, dazl, dead end, and vasa, in transplanted fish was higher than that in non-transplanted fish, suggesting the incorporation and proliferation donor spermatogonia in recipient. At 18 mpt, donor-derived spermatogonia survived in the 75.00% of recipient gonads. These results showed that the somatic microenvironment of Yangtze sturgeon gonad can support the long-term colonization, proliferation, and survival of xenogeneic germ cells. Thus, this study suggested that small-bodied Yangtze sturgeon is promising recipient as surrogate for Chinese sturgeon gamete production.

Abstract:Several sturgeon species are near extinction; therefore an efficient conservation strategy is required. Germ stem cells can be used for long-term storage and restoration of genetic information using surrogate reproduction. This study compared cryopreservation procedures of early stages of Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii testicular and ovarian cells. Whole gonad tissue or dissociated cells were frozen at a cooling rate of 1 °C/min in phosphate buffered saline with 0.5% bovine serum albumin, 50 mM glucose, and one of four different 1.5 M cryoprotectants: dimethyl sulfoxide, glycerol, ethylene glycol, or dimethyl sulfoxide with propanediol. The number of living cells obtained from 0.1 g of gonadal tissue after freeze/thaw of both whole tissue and dissociated cells was higher using ethylene glycol than with other cryoprotectants. Although there were no differences in the number of living cells in cryopreserved whole tissue vs. dissociated cells, the number of dead cells was lower with whole tissue cryopreservation, indicating that cells that died during freeze/thaw were digested during subsequent enzymatic dissociation. This resulted in more than 90% live cells after freeze/thaw and dissociation. The thawed tissue cryopreserved using ethylene glycol as protectant as well as fresh gonadal tissue were dissociated, and the cells were labelled by PKH26 and transplanted into larvae of sterlet Acipenser ruthenus. Ninety days post-transplant of both fresh and cryopreserved cells, introduced cells proliferated in more than half of the recipients.

Abstract:Spermatogenesis is a continuous and dynamic developmental process, in which a single diploid spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) proliferates and differentiates to form a mature spermatozoon. Herein, we summarize the accumulated knowledge of SSCs and their distribution in the testes of teleosts. We also reviewed the primary endocrine and paracrine influence on spermatogonium self-renewal vs. differentiation in fish. To provide insight into techniques and research related to SSCs, we review available protocols and advances in enriching undifferentiated spermatogonia based on their unique physiochemical and biochemical properties, such as size, density, and differential expression of specific surface markers. We summarize in vitro germ cell culture conditions developed to maintain proliferation and survival of spermatogonia in selected fish species. In traditional culture systems, sera and feeder cells were considered to be essential for SSC self-renewal, in contrast to recently developed systems with well-defined media and growth factors to induce either SSC self-renewal or differentiation in long-term cultures. The establishment of a germ cell culture contributes to efficient SSC propagation in rare, endangered, or commercially cultured fish species for use in biotechnological manipulation, such as cryopreservation and transplantation. Finally, we discuss organ culture and three-dimensional models for in vitro investigation of fish spermatogenesis.

Development of Sperm Cryopreservation Protocols for Sharks and Rays: New Tools for Elasmobranch Conservation

Abstract:Elasmobranchs are one of the most endangered vertebrate groups on the planet, but despite this situation the use of reproductive techniques in elasmobranch conservation strategies has been scarce. Among these techniques, sperm preservation is a potential tool for ex situ conservation and aquaria sustainability. However, there are no widespread preservation protocols for elasmobranch sperm, and shark sperm cryopreservation has never been achieved before. Here we present the establishment of successful cryopreservation protocols for elasmobranch sperm, tested in several species. We have formulated a sperm extender that can be used for different elasmobranch species, capable of maintaining sperm motility for several weeks. Additionally, we achieved the cryopreservation of sperm by previously diluting it in our extender and supplementing it with different combinations of cryoprotectants. The effects of methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide as permeating cryoprotectants were evaluated, as well egg yolk as a non-permeating cryoprotectant. Sperm quality was assessed by studying the motility and membrane integrity post-thawing, demonstrating its effectiveness in the 10 species tested, including two which are considered Critically Endangered. This is the first time that shark sperm cryopreservation has been reported, broadening our knowledge of the reproductive techniques that can be applied to elasmobranchs and laying the foundations for the first cryobanks for shark and ray sperm. Outcomes from this study will be useful for ex situ conservation efforts developed by public aquaria. A regular supply of frozen sperm will reduce the problems that result from the transport of specimens, inbreeding or lack of synchronized reproductive cycles in captivity.

Malignant mesothelioma of the pleura: interobserver variability.

Abstract:AIMS--To assess the consistency of histopathological diagnosis of pleural malignant mesothelioma by estimating interobserver agreement between five pathologists. METHODS--Eighty eight histological sets pertaining to original diagnoses of pleural malignant mesothelioma were reviewed separately by each pathologist. Diagnostic likelihood was graded as definite (A), probable (B), possible (C), improbable (D), and definitely not (E) malignant mesothelioma. The following indexes were estimated: observed proportion of agreement (Po), kappa statistics and proportion of agreement for "positive" (Ppos) and "negative" (Pneg) diagnoses. RESULTS--Sixty cases (68.2%) were rated by at least three reviewers as A or B and by none of the others as D or E. Five (5.7%) were rated by at least two reviewers as D or E and by none of the others as A or B. Nine (10.2%) showed a serious disagreement, rated A or B and D or E. Agreement for sets obtained at necropsy/surgery (median kappa w = 0.57) was similar to that for endoscopic material (median kappa w = 0.54). Agreement was poor on material obtained by needle biopsy (median kappa w = 0.21). The median value of Ppos varied between 0.94 (necropsy/surgery) and 0.67 (needle biopsy) and that of Pneg between 0.78 (necropsy/surgery) and 0.34 (unspecified biopsy). Interobserver agreement on histological typing was good overall (median kappa = 0.59). CONCLUSIONS--Of the original histological diagnoses, 70% were consistently reproduced through panel review. Most indexes of agreement between pathologists ranged from poor (needle biopsy) to moderate (necropsy/surgery). Agreement in confirming malignant mesothelioma was greater than that regarding exclusion of this diagnosis. Of the cases finally considered to have malignant mesothelioma, the reproducibility of histological typing was relatively satisfactory.
Successful Spermatogonial Stem Cells Transplantation within Pleuronectiformes: First Breakthrough at inter-family Level in Marine Fish

Abstract:As a promising biotechnology, fish germ cell transplantation shows potentials in conservation germplasm resource, propagation of elite species, and generation of transgenic individuals. In this study, we successfully transplanted the Japanese flounder (P. olivaceus), summer flounder (P. dentatus), and turbot (S. maximus) spermatogonia into triploid Japanese flounder larvae, and achieved high transplantation efficiency of 100%, 75-95% and 33-50% by fluorescence tracking and molecular analysis, respectively. Eventually, donor-derived spermatozoa produced offspring by artificial insemination. We only found male and intersex chimeras in inter-family transplantations, while male and female chimeras in both intra-species and intra-genus transplantations. Moreover, the intersex chimeras could mature and produce turbot functional spermatozoa. We firstly realized inter-family transplantation in marine fish species. These results demonstrated successful spermatogonial stem cells transplantation within Pleuronectiformes, suggesting the germ cells migration, incorporation and maturation within order were conserved across a wide range of teleost species.
Peptide-coating 2D and Small Chemical Molecules Prolong the Passage of Porcine Spermatogonia Stem Cells

Abstract:Porcine spermatogonia stem cells (pSSCs) are the only type of somatic stem cell that can pass genetic information to the successive generations. Little is known about pSSCs vitality in vitro, and due to their increasing importance in stem cell research, here, we optimized a protocol to culture pSSCs and explored their potential fate in vitro. Utilizing a feeder-free culture system with a 2D peptide-coating and small chemical molecules (including CHIR99021, Repsox, vitamin C, folic acid, and CD lipid concentrate), we were able to prolong the culture time of pSSCs by at least three months compared with previous methods. Moreover, we found that pSSCs could proliferate and self-renew in the seminiferous tubules of infertile mice. However, they could not perform meiosis. Our study shows that this feeder-free culture system optimizes cell culture and may facilitate advanced research on SSC biology and genetic manipulation of germ cells.
Successful xenogeneic germ cell transplantation from Jundia catfish (Rhamdia quelen) into adult Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) testes

Abstract:Fish germ cell transplantation presents several important potential applications for aquaculture, including the preservation of germplasm from endangered fish species with high genetic and commercial values. Using this technique in studies developed in our laboratory with adult male Nile tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus), all the necessary procedures were successfully established, allowing the production of functional sperm and healthy progeny approximately 2months after allogeneic transplantation. In the present study, we evaluated the viability of the adult Nile tilapia testis to generate sperm after xenogeneic transplant of germ cells from sexually mature Jundia catfish (Rhamdia quelen) that belong to a different taxonomic order. Therefore, in order to investigate at different time-periods post-transplantation, the presence and development of donor PKH26 labeled catfish germ cells were followed in the tilapia seminiferous tubules. From 7 to 20days post-transplantation, only PKH26 labeled spermatogonia were observed, whereas spermatocytes at different stages of development were found at 70days. Germ cell transplantation success and progression of spermatogenesis were indicated by the presence of labeled PKH26 spermatids and sperm on days 90 and 120 post-transplantation, respectively. Confirming the presence of the catfish genetic material in the tilapia testis, all recipient tilapias evaluated (n=8) showed the genetic markers evaluated. Therefore, we demonstrated for the first time that the adult Nile tilapia testis offers the functional conditions for development of spermatogenesis with sperm production from a fish species belonging to a different order, which provides an important new venue for aquaculture advancement.
Xenogenesis in Teleost Fish Through Generation of Germ-Line Chimeras by Single Primordial Germ Cell Transplantation1

Abstract:Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the only cells in developing embryos with the potential to transmit genetic information to the next generation. PGCs therefore have the potential to be of value for gene banking and cryopreservation, particularly via the production of donor gametes with germ-line chimeras. Currently, it is not clear how many PGCs are required for germ-line differentiation and formation of gonadal structures. In the present study, we achieved complete germ-line replacement between two related teleost species, the pearl danio (Danio albolineatus) and the zebrafish (Danio rerio), with transplantation of a single PGC into each host embryo. We isolated and transplanted a single PGC into each blastula-stage, zebrafish embryo. Development of host germ-line cells was prevented by an antisense dead end morpholino oligonucleotide. In many host embryos, the transplanted donor PGC successfully migrated toward the gonadal anlage without undergoing cell division. At the gonadal anlage, the PGC differentiated to form one normally sized gonad rather than the pair of gonads usually present. Offspring were obtained from natural spawning of these chimeras. Analyses of morphology and DNA showed that the offspring were of donor origin. We extended our study to confirm that transplanted single PGCs of goldfish (Carassius auratus) and loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) can similarly differentiate into sperm in zebrafish host embryos. Our results show that xenogenesis is realistic and practical across species, genus, and family barriers and can be achieved by the transplantation of a single PGC from a donor species.

Abstract:Chemical dosing is a significant process of water treatment system because it influences on water quality and operational cost. This paper presents a chemical dosing pH control using temporal logic technique for ultrafiltration water treatment system, in order to validate and analyze an appropriate control approach. In this study, a simulation was built in Matlab Simulink, and has been tested with the data collected from a pilot-scale ultrafiltration water treatment system. As stated in the simulation results, the proposed control scheme can achieve the performance specification in pH control.
Surrogate Production of Genome Edited Sperm from a Different Subfamily by Spermatogonial Stem Cell Transplantation

Abstract:The surrogate reproduction technique, such as inter-specific spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) transplantation (SSCT), provides a powerful tool for production of gametes derived from endangered species or those with desirable traits. However, generation of genome-edited gametes from a different species or production of gametes from a phylogenetically distant species such as from a different subfamily, by SSCT, has not succeeded. Here, using two small cyprinid fishes from different subfamilies, Chinese rare minnow (gobiocypris rarus, for brief: Gr) and zebrafish (danio rerio), we successfully obtained Gr-derived genome-edited sperm in zebrafish by an optimized SSCT procedure. The transplanted Gr SSCs supported the host gonadal development and underwent normal spermatogenesis, resulting in a reconstructed fertile testis containing Gr spermatids and zebrafish testicular somatic cells. Interestingly, the surrogate spermatozoa resembled those of host zebrafish but not donor Gr in morphology and swimming behavior. When pou5f3 and chd knockout Gr SSCs were transplanted, Gr-derived genome-edited sperm was successfully produced in zebrafish. This is the first report demonstrating surrogate production of gametes from a different subfamily by SSCT, and surrogate production of genome-edited gametes from another species as well. This method is feasible to be applied to future breeding of commercial fish and livestock.

Abstract:A numerical study of Brownian motion of noninteracting particles in random potentials is presented. The dynamics are modeled by Langevin equations in the high friction limit. The random potentials are Gaussian distributed and short ranged. The simulations are performed in one and two dimensions. Different dynamical regimes are found and explained. Effective subdiffusive exponents are obtained and commented on.

Abstract:Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are unique adult stem cells capable of self-renewal and differentiation into sperm. Grouper is a protogynous hermaphroditic fish farmed widely in the tropical and subtropical seas. In this study, we established an SSC line derived from adult testis of orange-spotted grouper, Epinephelus coioides. In the presence of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), the cells could be maintained with proliferation and self-renewal over 20 months and 120 passages under in vitro culture conditions. The cells exhibited strong alkaline phosphatase activity and the characteristics of SSCs with the expression of germ cell markers, including Vasa, Dazl, and Plzf, as well as the stem cell markers Nanog, Oct4, and Ssea1. Furthermore, the cultured cells could be induced by 11-ketotestosterone treatment to highly express the meiotic markers Rec8, Sycp3, and Dmc1, and produce some spherical cells, and even sperm-like cells with a tail. The findings of this study suggested that the cultured grouper SSC line would serve as an excellent tool to study the molecular mechanisms behind SSCs self-renewal and differentiation, meiosis during spermatogenesis, and sex reversal in hermaphroditic vertebrates. Moreover, this SSC line has great application value in grouper fish aquaculture, such as germ cell transplantation, genetic manipulation, and disease research.

Immunopathologic features of Staphylococcus epidermidis-induced endophthalmitis in the rat.

Abstract:PURPOSE To investigate the clinical, histopathologic and immunologic responses to Staphylococcus epidermidis endophthalmitis in a rat model. METHODS Experimental rats received an intravitreal injection of viable S. epidermidis (7000 organisms), while control rats received sterile saline. The clinical scores, cellular infiltrate in vitreous, and levels of serum and vitreous IgM, IgG and IgA to glycerol teichoic acid (GTA), the major antigenic determinant of S. epidermidis cell wall, were all measured from day 1 to day 30 after injection. RESULTS The ocular inflammation was largely resolved by day 14. The red reflex was abolished in 50% of rats between days 3 and 10. The bacteria were cleared from the vitreous by day 7. In vitreous, the neutrophils peaked at day 1 and decreased by day 7, and plasma cells were seen between days 1 and 3. Presence of B cells (CD45+/CD3-) was confirmed by flow cytometric analysis of pooled vitreous humor. IgM and IgG but not IgA antibodies to GTA were found in vitreous of injected eyes. The peak of anti-GTA IgM was observed in vitreous of S. epidermidis-infected rats on day 1 and declined by day 7. In contrast to vitreous antibodies, serum anti-GTA IgM antibodies were significantly elevated throughout the course of S. epidermidis endophthalmitis. A weak IgG but no IgA response were observed in serum. Anti-GTA antibodies were also found in low level in normal sera but not in normal vitreous. CONCLUSIONS The vitreous antibodies may be involved in neutrophil-mediated opsonophagocytosis leading to 'spontaneous sterility' of the bacteria, and may play a role in the immunopathogenesis of staphylococcal endophthalmitis in the rat.
