Abstract:To investigate the association of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution with the risk of allergic rhinitis (AR), we performed a longitudinal analysis of 379,488 participants (47.4% women) free of AR at baseline in the UK Biobank. The annual average concentrations of PM2.5, PMcoarse, PM10, NO2, and NOx were estimated by land use regression models. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A weighted polygenic risk score was constructed. During a median follow-up period of 12.5 years, 3095 AR cases were identified. We observed significant associations between the risk of AR and PM2.5 (HR: 1.51, 95% CI: 1.27-1.79, per 5 μg/m3), PMcoarse (HR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.06-1.55, per 5 μg/m3), PM10 (HR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.20-1.74, per 10 μg/m3), NO2 (HR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.09-1.19, per 10 μg/m3), and NOx (HR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.05-1.15, per 20 μg/m3). Moreover, participants with high air pollution combined with high genetic risk showed the highest risk of AR, although no multiplicative or additive interaction was observed. In conclusion, long-term exposure to air pollutants was associated with an elevated risk of AR, particularly in high-genetic-risk populations, emphasizing the urgent need to improve air quality.

Abstract:Particulate matter pollution is a serious environmental problem. Individuals exposed to particulate matters have an increased prevalence to diseases. In the present study, we performed an epidemiological study to investigate the effects of particulate matter less than 10 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM 10 ) and particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM 2.5 ) on allergic rhinitis in Nanjing, China. Daily numbers of allergic rhinitis patients (33,063 patients), PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and weather data were collected from January 2014 to December 2016 in Nanjing, China. Generalized additive models (GAM) were used to evaluate the effects of PM 10 and PM 2.5 on allergic rhinitis. We found that the interquartile range (IQR) increases in PM 10 (difference of estimates, 5.86%; 95% CI, 3.00–8.81%; P = 4.72 × 10 −5 ) and PM 2.5 (difference of estimates, 5.39%; 95% CI, 2.73–8.12%; P = 5.67 × 10 −5 ) concentrations were associated with the higher increased numbers of allergic rhinitis patients with 3-day cumulative effects in single-pollutant model. In addition, we found that the IQR increase in PM 10 (age ≥ 18 years: 7.37%, 3.91–10.96%, 2.14 × 10 −5 ; 0–17 years: 0.83%, − 4.00–5.91%, 0.740) and PM 2.5 (age ≥ 18 years: 7.00%, 3.78–10.32%, 1.40 × 10 −5 ; 0–17 years: 0.40%, − 4.10–5.10%, 0.866) increased the number of allergic rhinitis patients in adults, but not in children. In summary, our findings suggested that exposure to PM 10 and PM 2.5 was associated with the risk of allergic rhinitis.

Abstract:Allergic conjunctivitis is a common problem that significantly impairs patients' quality of life. Whether air pollution serves as a risk factor for the development of allergic conjunctivitis remains elusive. In this paper, we assess the relationship between air pollutants and weather conditions with outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis. By using a time-series analysis based on the largest dataset ever assembled to date, we found that the number of outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis was significantly correlated with the levels of NO2, O3, and temperature, while its association with humidity was statistically marginal. No associations between PM10, PM2.5, SO2, or wind velocity and outpatient visits were seen. Subgroup analyses showed that sex seemed to modify the effects of humidity on outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis, but not for NO2, O3, or temperature. People younger than 40 were found to be susceptible to changes of all four parameters, while those older than 40 were only consistently affected by NO2 levels. Our findings revealed that higher levels of ambient NO2, O3, and temperature increase the chances of outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis. Ambient air pollution and weather changes may contribute to the worsening of allergic conjunctivitis.
Acute effects of ambient air pollution on outpatients with chronic rhinitis in Xinxiang, China

Abstract:Air pollution exposure leads to increased mortality and morbidity rates of respiratory diseases. Most of the evidence was founded on acute diseases such as acute lower respiratory diseases. However, limited studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of air pollution on chronic respiratory diseases. This time-series study was conducted to examine the acute effects of 6 criteria ambient air pollutants on hospital outpatients with chronic rhinitis (CR) in Xinxiang, China. We retrieved 223,826 outpatient records of patients with respiratory diseases, of which 62,901 were those of patients with CR. Results showed that the current 10-μg/m3 increase in fine particulate matter (PM2.5), inhalable particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO) corresponds to 0.67% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.15–1.18%), 0.58% (95% CI: 0.24–0.92%), 1.89% (95% CI: 0.52–3.27%), 3.01% (95% CI: 1.66–4.35%), and 0.06% (95% CI: 0.03–0.10%) increments in outpatients with CR, respectively. In addition, the effects in the male were stronger than those in the female. Higher effect estimates were observed in the old (≥ 65 years of age) and younger (< 15 years of age) groups. Our study confirmed the association between air pollution and outpatients with CR in Xinxiang, China. More stringent air pollution control measures must be implemented.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To assess the effects of ambient air pollutants on hospital outpatient visits for allergic disease and pollinosis.METHODS:The monitoring data of daily air pollution (SO(2), NO(2) and PM(10)) in 8 national monitoring and controlling sites of Beijing air quality, airborne pollen in 4 monitoring sites of Beijing, and daily meteorological data, along with the daily numbers of outpatients visits for allergic disease and pollinosis at the Allergy Department of Beijing Shijitan Hospital from April to September in 2004 were collected. Associations between the levels of air pollutants and outpatient visits for allergic disease and pollinosis were estimated by time serial analysis using a generalized addictive model (GAM), considering lag effect and the influence of multipollutants.RESULTS:During the study period, the average daily ambient concentrations of SO(2), NO(2) and PM(10) were (20.9 ± 12.9), (58.6 ± 13.6) and (126.8 ± 64.1) µg/m(3), respectively. The mean daily pollen count was (163.8 ± 209.0) grains/1000 mm(2), while the average daily numbers of doctor visits for allergic disease and pollinosis were (16.3 ± 5.3) and (3.5 ± 5.0), respectively. Time serial analysis showed that significant positive associations were found between levels of airborne pollen and doctor visits, with an excess risk (ER) of 2.44% (95%CI: 0.75% - 4.13%)for allergic disease and 6.58% (95%CI: 3.82% - 9.34%) for pollinosis per 100 grains/1000 mm(2) increase in pollen, in single-pollutant models. There were associations between ambient air pollutants (SO(2), NO(2), PM(10)) and doctor visits with lag effects. A 10 µg/m(3) increase in NO(2) was associated with a 3.14% (95%CI: 0.42% - 5.85%) increase in doctor visits for allergic disease at lag 6 d. For pollinosis, the highest ER was observed for 10 µg/m(3) increases in SO(2) at lag 1 d, NO(2) at lag 6 d, PM(10) at lag 3 d. However, this association was not statistically significant (RR (95%CI) were 1.0460 (0.9640 - 1.1280), 1.0325 (0.9633 - 1.1017), 1.0079 (0.9942 - 1.0217), respectively). The associations enhanced slightly in multi-pollutant models with an ER of 2.56% (95%CI: 0.80% - 4.31%) for allergic disease and 6.81% (95%CI: 3.91% - 9.71%) for pollinosis per 100 grains/1000 mm(2) of pollen.CONCLUSIONS:Our results suggest that level of airborne pollen may have a stronger effect than ambient air pollutants on allergic disease and pollinosis.

Abstract:Limited evidence was seen as the association between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and physician visits for allergic rhinitis (AR), especially in countries with extreme air pollution exposure. This paper addressed the issues about the association between PM2.5 and daily outpatient visits for AR among individuals residing in Beijing, China. Data on daily outpatient visits for AR obtained from Beijing Medical Claim Data for Employees and daily PM2.5 concentrations available from US embassy reports were linked by date from January 1, 2010, to June 30, 2012. A time-series analysis was conducted with a generalized additive Poisson model to assess the association between PM2.5 and AR, adjusting for daily average temperature, relative humidity, day of the week, calendar time, and public holiday. Totally, 229,685 outpatient visits for AR were included in the analysis. The daily mean (SD) concentration of PM2.5 was 99.5 (75.3) μg/m3 during the study period. We found that a 10-μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 content was associated with a 0.47% (95% CI: 0.39% to 0.55%) increase in the number of outpatient visits on the same day. Furthermore, results from subgroup analyses suggested that the association was consistently significant among the groups of different ages (< 65 years and ≥ 65 years) and gender. However, this study failed to find a statistically significant association in the autumn season but found significant positive associations during the spring and summer seasons (P for interaction < 0.001). This study indicated a possible association between PM2.5 and AR outpatients, which may benefit further researches in studying PM2.5 and its influence on diseases in a real and seriously air-polluted context.
Auditory evoked potentials recorded directly from the human VIIIth nerve and brain stem: origins of their fast and slow components.

Abstract:Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in humans are composed of fast pseudorhythmic positive waves and slow positive and negative waves. The sources of these components have been identified on the basis of the observation of amplitude increase in depth records during surgery and by tracing these potentials from their intracranial maximum to the scalp by using movable electrodes within the IVth, IIIrd and lateral ventricles. The first wave I represents postsynaptic activities of the first auditory neurones; axonal volleys travelling along the auditory nerve do not contribute to this wave, which is obviously discrepant with the currently accepted view. Waves II and III are primarily generated within the pons, with possible contributions from the auditory nerve. Waves IV and VI originate from the pons and the medial geniculate body respectively. Both slow positive and negative waves have their origin in the inferior colliculus (IC). The slow positive waves probably represent incoming axonal volley and the negative waves, the postsynaptic potentials in the IC.
Short-term Exposure to High Ambient Air Pollution Aggravates Respiratory Symptom and Lung Function in Asthma Patients in Bejing, China

Abstract:Background: Air pollution can cause acute exacerbation of asthma. We aimed to investigate the short-term respiratory effects of ambient air pollution in asthma patients in Beijing, China. Methods: A panel of 32 asthma patients was recruited and repeatedly recorded for asthma control test ( ACT ) score, and measured for lung function in November 2015 - December 2016 . Daily ambient air pollution data including PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2 and CO were obtained from nearby central air-monitoring stations. Mixed effects models in R 3.3.2 were used. Results: We collected repeated clinical datas every 1 month for 2 to 13 times for 32 asthma patients (totally 266 visits). Interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM2.5 (74.5 μg/m3, 6-d ), PM10 (78 μg/m3, 5-d), SO2 (10 μg/m3, 7-d), NO2 (37 μg/m3, 6-d) and CO (0.7 μg/m3, 6-d) were significantly associated with reduction in ACT score of 3.6 % (95% CI: -6.3%, -0.9%), 2.8% (95% CI:-5.1%, -0.5%), 3.2 % (95% CI: -5.5%, -0.9%), 3.8% (95% CI:-7.0%, -0.5%) and 2.9 % (95% CI: -4.3%, -1.4%), respectively. An IQR of 78μg/m3 in 7-d PM10 moving average concentrations were significantly associated with a 3.6%（95%CI: -5.6%, -1.5%）reduction in FEV1% and a 6.0%（95%CI: -9.2%, -2.7%）reduction in FEF 25%, respectively. Conclusions: Ambient air pollution may aggravate respiratory symptoms and lung function of asthma patients in Beijing, China.

Abstract:Background Short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and its specific constituents might exacerbate allergic rhinitis (AR) conditions. However, the evidence is still inconclusive. Method We conducted a panel study of 49 patients diagnosed with AR > 1 year prior to the study in Taiyuan, China, to investigate associations of individual exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents with oxidative parameters, symptoms, and quality of life among AR patients. All participants underwent repeated assessments of health and PM exposure at 4 time points in both the heating and nonheating seasons from June 2017 to January 2018. AR patients' oxidative parameters were assessed using nasal lavage, and their subjective symptoms and quality of life were determined through in-person interviews using a structured questionnaire. Short-term personal exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents was estimated using the time-microenvironment-activity pattern and data from the nearest air sampler, respectively. We applied mixed-effects regression models to estimate the short-term effects of PM 2.5 and its constituents. Results The results showed that exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents, including BaP, PAHs, SO2-4, NH+ 4, V, Cr, Cu, As, Se, Cd, and Pb, was significantly associated with increased oxidative stress, as indicated by an increase in the malondialdehyde (MDA) index. Exposure to PM 2.5 and its components (V, Mn, Fe, Zn, As, and Se) was associated with decreased antioxidant activity, as indicated by a decrease in the superoxide dismutase (SOD) index. Additionally, increased visual analog scale (VAS) and rhinitis-related quality of life scale (RQLQ) scores indicated that exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents exacerbated inflammatory symptoms and affected quality of life in AR patients. Conclusion Exposure to PM 2.5 and specific constituents, could exacerbate AR patients' inflammatory symptoms and adversely affect their quality of life in the heavily industrialized city of Taiyuan, China. These findings may have potential biological and policy implications.

Abstract:Objectives: The allergic airway disease, such as allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, asthma, is a general term of a range of inflammatory disorders affecting the upper and lower airways and lung parenchyma. This study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of air pollutants and meteorological factors on AAD-related daily outpatient visits. Study design: An ecological study. Methods: Data on outpatient visits due to AAD (n = 4,554,404) were collected from the platform of the Ningbo Health Information from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2021. A Quasi-Poisson generalized additive regression model was established to analyze the lag effects of air pollution on daily outpatient visits for AAD. Restricted cubic spline functions were used to explore the potential non-linear relationships between air pollutants and meteorological and daily outpatient visits for AAD. Results: PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, or CO were associated with daily outpatient visits for AAD, and there was a significant increasing trend in the cumulative lag effects. SO2 had the largest effect at Lag07, with a 25.3% (95% CI: 21.6%-29.0%) increase in AAD for every 10 μg/m3 increase in exposure concentration. Subgroup analysis showed that the 0-18 years old age group had the strongest effects, especially for AR, and all effects were stronger in the cold season. Conclusions: Given that patients aged 0-18 are more susceptible to environmental changes, protective measures specifically for children should be taken during dry and cold weather conditions with poor air quality.
Association between air pollution and outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis: Effect modification by ambient temperature and relative humidity

Abstract:Mounting evidence indicated the associations between air pollution and outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis (AR), while few studies assessed the effect modification of these associations by ambient temperature and relative humidity (RH). In this study, dataset of AR outpatients was obtained from Chinese People's Liberation Army Strategic Support Force Characteristic Medical Center in Beijing during 2014 to 2019, and the average concentrations of air pollutants including particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) and ≤10 μm (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and meteorological factors (temperature and RH) at the same period were collected from one nearby air monitoring station. We performed a time-series study with Poisson regression model to examine the effects of air pollutants on AR outpatients after adjustment for potential confounders. And the effects modification analysis was further conducted by stratifying temperature and RH by tertiles into three groups of low, middle and high. In total of 33,599 outpatient visits for AR were recorded during the study period. Results found that a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and SO2 was associated with significant increases in AR outpatients of 1.24% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.69%, 1.78%), 0.79% (95% CI: 0.43%, 1.15%), 3.05% (95% CI: 1.72%, 4.40%) and 5.01% (95% CI: 1.18%, 8.96%), respectively. Stronger associations were observed in males than those in females, as well as in young adults (18-44 years) than those in other age groups. Air pollution effects on AR outpatients increased markedly at low temperature (<33.3th percentile) and high RH (>66.7th percentile). Findings in this study indicate that air pollution is associated with increased risk of AR outpatients, and the effects of air pollution on AR could be enhanced at low temperature and high RH.

Abstract:Background/Aims: There is increasing evidence that exposure to air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2), might aggravate preexisting skin diseases such as eczema and urticaria. Here we investigated if a possible link exists between air pollution and acne vulgaris. We assessed the association between ambient air pollutant concentrations and the number of visits of patients for acne vulgaris to a dermatological outpatient clinic in Beijing, China, from April 1, 2012 to April 30, 2014. Methods: In this time period, 59,325 outpatient visits were recorded because of acne vulgaris. Daily air pollution parameters for PM10, PM2.5, SO2, and NO2 were obtained from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center. Results: Increased concentrations of ambient PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 were significantly associated with increased numbers of outpatient visits for acne vulgaris over the 2 years. These effects could be observed for NO2 in a single-pollutant model and for PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 in 2-pollutant models, which are closer to real-life exposure. Of note, these effects were specific because they were not observed for increased SO2 concentrations, which even showed negative correlations in all test models. Conclusion: This study provides indirect evidence for a link between acne vulgaris and air pollution.

Abstract:The air pollution in China is a severe problem. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of air pollutants on acute respiratory outcomes in outpatients. Outpatient data from 2 December 2013 to 1 December 2014 were collected, as well as air pollutant data including ozone (O-3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10). We screened six categories of acute respiratory outcomes and analyzed their associations with different air pollutant exposures, including upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), acute bronchitis (AB), community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), acute exacerbation of asthma (AE-asthma), and acute exacerbation of bronchiectasis (AEBX). A case-crossover design with a bidirectional control sampling approach was used for statistical analysis. A total of 57,144 patients were enrolled for analysis. PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, and CO exposures were positively associated with outpatient visits for URTI, AB, CAP, and AEBX. PM10, SO2, and CO exposures were positively associated with outpatient visits for AECOPD. Exposure to O-3 was positively associated with outpatient visits for AE-asthma, but negatively associated with outpatient visits for URTI, CAP, and AEBX. In conclusion, air pollutants had acute effects on outpatient visits for acute respiratory outcomes, with specific outcomes associated with specific pollutants.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most common allergic diseases in the world, and usually persists throughout the activity. Epidemiological studies have shown a positive association between air pollution and allergic rhinitis. However, we could not find any meta-analysis of the risk of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, O3 and CO) on the prevalence of AR in people of all ages.OBJECTIVES: Carry out a meta-analysis on the results of recent studies (up to 2020) to present valid information about exposure to air pollution and risk of prevalence of AR.METHODS: We systematically searched three databases for studies up to December 17, 2020, including air pollution and AR. Random effect models were conducted to estimate the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Subgroup analysis, funnel plot, Egger's test, and the trim-and-fill method were also conducted.RESULTS: Thirty-five studies across 12 countries, including a total of 453,470 participants, were included. The OR per 10 μg/m3 increase of pollutants was 1.13 (1.04-1.22) for PM10 and 1.12 (1.05-1.20) for PM2.5. The OR per 10 μg/m3 increment of gaseous pollutants were 1.13 (1.07-1.20) for NO2, 1.13 (1.04-1.22) for SO2 and 1.07 (1.01-1.12) for O3. No significant association was observed between CO and AR. Children or adolescents are more sensitive to air pollution than adults. The effects of PM10 and SO2 were significantly stronger in Europe than Asia. The effects of air pollutants were more significant and higher in developing countries than in developed countries, except for PM10. A significant difference of subgroup test was found between developed and developing countries of NO2.CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis showed a positive association between air pollution and the prevalence of allergic rhinitis, and identified geographic area and economic level as the potential modifiers for the association.

Abstract:Background Poor air quality increases the risk of developing chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and other airway diseases. However, there are limited data on air pollutants and CRS‐specific disease severity. We assessed the impact of air pollutants on sinonasal‐specific and general quality‐of‐life (QOL) measures in a multi‐institutional cohort of patients with CRS. Methods Participants with CRS were prospectively enrolled in a cross‐sectional study and self‐selected continued appropriate medical therapy or endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The 22‐item SinoNasal Outcome Test (SNOT‐22) and Medical Outcomes Study Questionnaire Short‐Form 6‐D (SF‐6D) health utility value scores were recorded. Patient exposure to air pollutants was determined using residence zip codes. Unadjusted group differences were compared and correlation coefficients were evaluated to identify the magnitude of bivariate association. Results 486 patients were enrolled and followed for a mean of 6.9 [SD±2.3] months. Pollutant exposure did not significantly correlate with baseline SNOT‐22 or SF‐6D scores. Revision ESS was associated with higher median fine particulate matter (PM2.5; Δ = 0.12, (95% CI: 0.003, 0.234); p = 0.006) compared to primary surgery. PM2.5, PM10 and nitrogen dioxide concentrations (ug/m3) did not correlate with change in total SNOT‐22 or SF‐6D scores after treatment. Nevertheless, sulfur dioxide (SNOT‐22: ρ = ‐0.121 (95% CI: ‐0.210, ‐0.030); p = 0.007; SF‐6D: ρ = 0.095 (95% CI: 0.002, 0.186); p = 0.04) and carbon monoxide (SNOT‐22: ρ = ‐0.141 (95% CI: ‐0.230, 0.050); p = 0.002) exposure did correlate with these outcome measures. Conclusion Air pollutants may contribute, at least in part, to disease severity in CRS; future investigation is needed to further elucidate the nature of this relationship. Abstract:Purpose of reviewThe prevalence of allergic rhinitis as well as other allergic diseases has been increasing for at least five decades. A possible cause of this increase could be the exposure of genetically predisposed individuals to a constantly changing indoor and outdoor environment. Two of the changes strongly implicated in the sensitization process and in the triggering of symptoms of allergic diseases are air pollution and global warming induced by climate change, factors which are closely related to each other.Recent findingsEnvironmental pollutants may act on a developing immune and respiratory system, which increases the possibility of a negative impact on the structural and functional maturation of the respiratory system, and on the immune response in children. The increase in allergic respiratory diseases appears to be related with an increase in the atmospheric concentration of gases and respirable particulate matter.SummaryThis article summarizes the main consequences of the complex relationship that exists between allergic rhinitis, environmental pollution, and climate change and presents some potential measures aiming at modifying some aspects of this intriguing relationship to achieve a clinical benefit in patients suffering from allergic diseases, especially allergic rhinitis.

Abstract:Background/Aim: Previous research indicated the detrimental effect of air pollution on respiratory systems. We investigated the association between air pollution and respiratory symptoms in school children based on our school cohort in Hong Kong starting from 2012. Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted with our baseline data: 1735 participants from 17 schools across Hong Kong were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Parents-administrated questionnaires were used to collect information on non-infectious rhinitis, asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis and a wide range of confounders. Data of air quality for each school were retrieved from nearest Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department (HKEPD) monitoring stations. The pollutant concentrations for past 12 months were averaged to estimate the exposure, including particulates (PM2.5, PM10, TSP) and gaseous pollutants (SO2, NO2, O3). A two-level logistic regression model was used for data analysis. Results: In total, 27.3% (473 of 1735) students reported rhinitis occurrence in past 12 months. The simple regression result demonstrated higher likelihood of rhinitis occurrence is significantly associated with higher concentration of NO2 (OR: 1.008, 95%CI: 1.001, 1.014) and PM2.5 (OR: 1.092, 95%CI: 1.011, 1.180). The statistical significance remained after adjusting for asthma, gender and age. For other symptoms, no effect is observed. Conclusions: The result indicated higher concentrations of ambient pollutants in school area may contribute to the occurrence of rhinitis in school children.

Abstract:Background Emerging evidence has underscored the harmful effects of air pollution on the upper airway. We investigated the relationship between ambient particulate matter (PM) level and the frequency of outpatient visits for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Methods We conducted an ecological cohort study of US adults enrolled in The Merative MarketScan outpatient database from 2007 to 2020. For each geographical subunit (core‐based statistical area [CBSA]), we calculated the annual rate of CRS‐related outpatient visits per 1000 well‐patient checkup visits (CRS‐OV). Using data from the Environmental Protection Agency's Air Quality System, we mapped the rolling statistical average of daily PM2.5 and PM10 over the preceding year onto each CBSA × year combination. We employed multivariable negative binomial regression modeling to estimate the association between PM levels and subsequent CRS‐OV. Results Across 3933 observations (CBSA × year combinations), encompassing ∼4 billion visits, the median CRS‐OV was 164 (interquartile range 110–267). The mean PM2.5 level was 8.9 μg/m3 (SD 2.6) and the mean PM10 level was 20.2 μg/m3 (SD 7.2). Adjusting for patient demographics and respiratory comorbidities, a compounded rise in subsequent CRS‐OV was observed with increasing PM levels. Each μg/m3 rise in PM2.5 independently predicted a 10% increase in CRS‐OV (adjusted incidence rate ratio [aIRR]) 1.10, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08–1.13) and each μg/m3 rise in PM10 independently predicted a 3% increase in CRS‐OV (aIRR 1.03, 95% CI 1.02–1.04). Conclusion Elevated ambient PM2.5 and PM10 levels are associated with a subsequent compounded increase in the frequency of CRS‐OV, with PM2.5 predicting a more pronounced rise compared to PM10.

Abstract:Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common chronic inflammatory disease with bothersome symptoms. However, the effect of air pollution on the prevalence of AR in children is controversial. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between air pollution and the prevalence of AR in Chinese children. Methods: This study, in China, included 160,356 students ages 0-18 years who completed a questionnaire about the accuracy of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). The effect of different air pollutants on the prevalence rate were evaluated by meta-analysis. Also, it evaluated the effect of different air pollutants on the prevalence rate. Results: The differences in the effects of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) exposure (combined odds ratio [ORcombined] 1.03 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.01-1.05]; p = 0.010) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) exposure (ORcombined 1.11 [95% CI, 1.05-1.18]; p = 0.0006) on the risk of childhood AR was statistically significant. The effect of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter of <10 μm (PM10) exposure on the risk of childhood AR was statistically significant (ORcombined 1.02 [95% CI, 1.01-1.03]; p < 0.001), the effect of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 μm (PM2.5) exposure on the risk of childhood AR was statistically significant (ORcombined 1.15 [95% CI, 1.03-1.29]; p = 0.02), and the effect of ozone exposure on the risk of childhood AR was not statistically significant (ORcombined 0.98 [95% CI, 0.67-1.41]; p = 0.13). Conclusion: NO₂, SO₂, PM2.5, and PM10 were associated with the prevalence of AR in Chinese children. PM2.5 had the highest correlation with AR prevalence.
