Abstract:One of the limitations of the dung beetle optimization (DBO) is its susceptibility to local optima and its relatively low search accuracy. Several strategies have been utilized to improve the diversity, search precision, and outcomes of the DBO. However, the equilibrium between exploration and exploitation has not been achieved optimally. This paper presents a novel algorithm called the ODBO, which incorporates cat map and an opposition-based learning strategy, which is based on symmetry theory. In addition, in order to enhance the performance of the dung ball rolling phase, this paper combines the global search strategy of the osprey optimization algorithm with the position update strategy of the DBO. Additionally, we enhance the population's diversity during the foraging phase of the DBO by incorporating vertical and horizontal crossover of individuals. This introduction of asymmetry in the crossover operation increases the exploration capability of the algorithm, allowing it to effectively escape local optima and facilitate global search.

Abstract:The Dung Beetle Optimization (DBO) algorithm is a powerful metaheuristic algorithm that is widely used for optimization problems. However, the DBO algorithm has limitations in balancing global exploration and local exploitation capabilities, often leading to getting stuck in local optima. To overcome these limitations and address global optimization problems, this study introduces the Multi-Strategy and Improved DBO (MSIDBO) Algorithm. The MSIDBO algorithm incorporates several advanced computational techniques to enhance its performance. Firstly, it introduces a random reverse learning strategy to improve population diversity and mitigate early convergence or local stagnation issues present in the DBO algorithm. Additionally, a fitness-distance balancing strategy is employed to better manage the trade-off between diversity and convergence within the population. Furthermore, the algorithm utilizes a spiral foraging strategy to enhance precision, promote strong exploratory capabilities, and prevent being trapped in local optima. To further enhance the global search ability and particle utilization of the MSIDBO algorithm, it combines the Optimal Dimension-Wise Gaussian Mutation strategy. By minimizing premature convergence, population diversity is increased, and the convergence of the algorithm is accelerated. This expansion of the search space reduces the likelihood of being trapped in local optima during the evolutionary process. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the MSIDBO algorithm, extensive experiments are conducted using benchmark test functions, comparing its performance against other well-known metaheuristic algorithms. The results highlight the feasibility and superiority of MSIDBO in solving optimization problems. Moreover, the MSIDBO algorithm is applied to path planning simulation experiments to showcase its practical application potential. A comparison with the DBO algorithm shows that MSIDBO generates shorter and faster paths, effectively addressing real-world application problems.

Abstract:The dung beetle optimization (DBO) algorithm is acknowledged for its robust optimization capabilities and rapid convergence as an efficient swarm intelligence optimization technique. Nevertheless, DBO, similar to other swarm intelligence algorithms, often gets trapped in local optima during the later stages of optimization. To mitigate this challenge, we propose the Move-to-Escape dung beetle optimization (MEDBO) algorithm in this paper. MEDBO utilizes a good point set strategy for initializing the swarm's initial population, ensuring a more uniform distribution and diminishing the risk of local optima entrapment. Moreover, it incorporates convergence factors and dynamically balances the number of offspring and foraging individuals, prioritizing global exploration initially and local exploration subsequently. This dynamic adjustment not only enhances the search speed but also prevents local optima stagnation. The algorithm's performance was assessed using the CEC2017 benchmark suite, which confirmed MEDBO's significant improvements. Additionally, we applied MEDBO to three engineering problems: pressure vessel design, three-bar truss design, and spring design. MEDBO exhibited an excellent performance in these applications, demonstrating its practicality and efficacy in real-world problem-solving contexts.
Dung beetle optimizer: a new meta-heuristic algorithm for global optimization

Abstract:In this paper, a novel population-based technique called dung beetle optimizer (DBO) algorithm is presented, which is inspired by the ball-rolling, dancing, foraging, stealing, and reproduction behaviors of dung beetles. The newly proposed DBO algorithm takes into account both the global exploration and the local exploitation, thereby having the characteristics of the fast convergence rate and the satisfactory solution accuracy. A series of well-known mathematical test functions (including both 23 benchmark functions and 29 CEC-BC-2017 test functions) are employed to evaluate the search capability of the DBO algorithm. From the simulation results, it is observed that the DBO algorithm presents substantially competitive performance with the state-of-the-art optimization approaches in terms of the convergence rate, solution accuracy, and stability. In addition, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Friedman test are used to evaluate the experimental results of the algorithms, which proves the superiority of the DBO algorithm against other currently popular optimization techniques. In order to further illustrate the practical application potential, the DBO algorithm is successfully applied in three engineering design problems. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DBO algorithm can effectively deal with real-world application problems.

Abstract:In high-dimensional scenarios, path planning is a challenging and computationally complex optimization task that requires finding optimal paths within complex domains. Metaheuristic (MH) algorithms offer a practical approach to addressing this issue. The Dung Beetle Optimizer (DBO), categorized as a MH algorithm, takes inspiration from the biological behaviors exhibited by dung beetles. However, DBO exhibits limitations, including inadequate global search capabilities and a tendency to converge on local optima. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a multi-strategy Improved Dung Beetle Optimization algorithm (IDBO) for UAV 3D path planning. Initially, cubic chaos mapping is applied for population initialization, enhancing diversity. Subsequently, a novel global exploration strategy replaces the DBO's original rolling phase, improving information exchange and minimizing parameter dependence. Third, an adaptive t-distribution is introduced to adjust dung beetle positions, balancing exploration and exploitation. Finally, an enhanced population update strategy is proposed, utilizing varied behavioral logic at different algorithm stages to improve solution quality and search efficiency. Additionally, performance comparisons with six advanced algorithms on the CEC2017 test suite, and the validation of IDBO's effectiveness via the Wilcoxon rank-sum and Friedman mean rank test. Meanwhile, in UAV 3D path planning experiment, IDBO achieves the best cost index, which is 1.34% higher than the best cost of original DBO, and is also significantly better than the most advanced algorithms such as WOA, GSA, HHO, COA, and the standard deviation is reduced by 99.93% compared with DBO algorithm, which proves the effectiveness and robustness of IDBO in UAV 3D path planning.

Abstract:Path planning is a challenging, computationally complex optimization task in high-dimensional scenarios. The metaheuristic algorithm provides an excellent solution to this problem. The dung beetle optimizer (DBO) is a recently developed metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the biological behavior of dung beetles. However, it still has the drawbacks of poor global search ability and being prone to falling into local optima. This paper presents a multi-strategy enhanced dung beetle optimizer (MDBO) for the three-dimensional path planning of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). First, we used the Beta distribution to dynamically generate reflection solutions to explore more search space and allow particles to jump out of the local optima. Second, the Levy distribution was introduced to handle out-of-bounds particles. Third, two different cross operators were used to improve the updating stage of thief beetles. This strategy accelerates convergence and balances exploration and development capabilities. Furthermore, the MDBO was proven to be effective by comparing seven state-of-the-art algorithms on 12 benchmark functions, the Wilcoxon rank sum test, and the CEC 2021 test suite. In addition, the time complexity of the algorithm was also analyzed. Finally, the performance of the MDBO in path planning was verified in the three-dimensional path planning of UAVs in oil and gas plants. In the most challenging task scenario, the MDBO successfully searched for feasible paths with the mean and standard deviation of the objective function as low as 97.3 and 32.8, which were reduced by 39.7 and 14, respectively, compared to the original DBO. The results demonstrate that the proposed MDBO had improved optimization accuracy and stability and could better find a safe and optimal path in most scenarios than the other metaheuristics.

Abstract:To improve the performance of the sparrow search algorithm in solving complex optimization problems, this study proposes a novel variant called the Improved Beetle Antennae Search-Based Sparrow Search Algorithm (IBSSA). A new elite dynamic opposite learning strategy is proposed in the population initialization stage to enhance population diversity. In the update stage of the discoverer, a staged inertia weight guidance mechanism is used to improve the update formula of the discoverer, promote the information exchange between individuals, and improve the algorithm's ability to optimize on a global level. After the follower's position is updated, the logarithmic spiral opposition-based learning strategy is introduced to disturb the initial position of the individual in the beetle antennae search algorithm to obtain a more purposeful solution. To address the issue of decreased diversity and susceptibility to local optima in the sparrow population during later stages, the improved beetle antennae search algorithm and sparrow search algorithm are combined using a greedy strategy. This integration aims to improve convergence accuracy. On 20 benchmark test functions and the CEC2017 Test suite, IBSSA performed better than other advanced algorithms. Moreover, six engineering optimization problems were used to demonstrate the improved algorithm's effectiveness and feasibility.

Abstract:To improve the convergence speed and optimization accuracy of the Dung Beetle Optimizer (DBO), this paper proposes an improved algorithm based on circle mapping and longitudinal-horizontal crossover strategy (CICRDBO). First, the Circle method is used to map the initial population to increase diversity. Second, the longitudinal-horizontal crossover strategy is applied to enhance the global search ability by ensuring the position updates of the dung beetle. Simulations were conducted on 10 benchmark test functions, and the results demonstrate that the improved algorithm performs well in both convergence speed and optimization accuracy. The improved algorithm is further applied to the hyperparameter selection of the Random Forest classification algorithm for binary classification prediction in the retail industry. Various combination comparisons prove the practicality of the improved algorithm, followed by SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved dung beetle optimization algorithm (IDBO) combined with dynamic window approach (DWA) is proposed for the path planning problem in static and dynamic environments. This method mathematically models the rolling, breeding, foraging, and stealing behaviors of dung beetles. To address the constraints of the conventional dung beetle optimizer in path planning, four improvement facets are proposed to augment the algorithm's efficacy. First, to enhance the search randomness and diversity, an initial population initialization method using Chebyshev chaos map is introduced. Then, curve adaptive golden sine strategy (CGSS) is used to replace the rolling dung beetle position update formulation to increase convergence rate and accuracy during the search. Third, the position update formula for reproductive and foraging dung beetles was improved by using the Levy flights with Cauchy- t mutation strategy (LCTS) to increase the exploratory power and adaptability of the search. Finally, dynamic weight coefficient is introduced to adjust the stealing behavior formulation in order to improve the adaptability and robustness of the algorithm to different problems. The improved algorithm exhibits remarkable enhancements in search efficiency and solution quality by utilizing test functions and experimentally validating the path planning problem. Compared with the traditional dung beetle optimization algorithm with other optimization algorithms, the improved algorithm can converge to the optimal solution faster and has better global search capability and stability.

Abstract:As the underwater environment is complex, the existence of obstacles will produce a certain collision interference to underwater robot operations, which causes the overall path planning and time costs to increase. In this paper, we propose a Tent chaotic mapping and dung beetle hybrid algorithm (MDBO) application for trajectory optimal planning and effective obstacle avoidance for an underwater telescopic arm robot. The method invokes the unique obstacle avoidance habit and foraging optimization idea of the dung beetle algorithm. Introducing it into the chaotic Tent mapping idea prevents the dung beetle algorithm (DBO) from falling into local optimality and increases the coverage of a global search. Simulation results show that the MDBO algorithm exhibits strong optimization ability and stability when multiple algorithms are verified using eight test functions. The MATLAB test reflects the performance indexes of the six joints of the underwater telescopic arm, and compared with various algorithms, the MDBO algorithm has an obvious convergence trend and strong global search ability. The algorithm is applied to real underwater experiments to verify that the improved dung beetle algorithm has better obstacle avoidance ability and reduces trajectory planning time by 30%, which helps the underwater robot to complete motion planning.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of high dimensionality, multi-constraint, multi-phase, non-linearity, and the fact that the established model is not easy to solve for the optimal scheduling of reservoir group flood control, this paper improved the dung beetle optimization algorithm by adopting a variety of strategies, proposes a new intelligent optimization algorithm, the multi-strategy improved dung beetle algorithm (MIDBO), and firstly applied it to the optimal scheduling of flood control in reservoir groups. In addition, this study analyzed and contrasted the MIDBO algorithm's calculation results with the examples of the particle swarm and dung beetle optimization algorithms in relation to the reservoir cluster in the middle and lower sections of the Yellow River. And the peak reduction rates of these algorithms are 52.82%, 51.48%, and 50.25% in turn. The outcomes demonstrate that the MIDBO algorithm has strong performance, fast optimization efficiency, obvious peak reduction effect, and is a feasible method to solve the optimization problem of reservoir flood control and scheduling.

Abstract:Dandelion Optimizer (DO) is a recently proposed swarm intelligence algorithm that coincides with the process of finding the best reproduction site for dandelion seeds. Compared with the classical Meta-heuristic algorithms, DO exhibits strong competitiveness, but it also has some drawbacks. In this paper, we proposed an adaptive hybrid dandelion optimizer called DETDO by combining three strategies of adaptive tent chaotic mapping, differential evolution (DE) strategy, and adaptive t-distribution perturbation to address the shortcomings of weak DO development, easy to fall into local optimum and slow convergence speed. Firstly, the adaptive tent chaos mapping is used in the initialization phase to obtain a uniformly distributed high-quality initial population, which helps the algorithm to enter the correct search region quickly. Secondly, the DE strategy is introduced to increase the diversity of dandelion populations to avoid algorithm stagnation, which improves the exploitation capability and the accuracy of the optimal solution. Finally, adaptive t -distribution perturbation around the elite solution successfully balances the exploration and exploitation phases while improving the convergence speed through a reasonable conversion from Cauchy to Gaussian distribution. The proposed DETDO is compared with classical or advanced optimization algorithms on CEC2017 and CEC2019 test sets, and the experimental results and statistical analysis demonstrate that the algorithm has better optimization accuracy and speed. In addition, DETDO has obtained the best results in solving six real-world engineering design problems. Finally, DETDO is applied to two bar topology optimization cases. Under a series of complex constraints, DETDO produces a lighter bar structure than the current scheme. It further illustrates the effectiveness and applicability of DETDO in practical problems. The above results mean that DETDO with strong competitiveness will become a preferred swarm intelligence algorithm to cope with optimization problems.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel meta-heuristic algorithm named Rhinopithecus Swarm Optimization (RSO) to address optimization problems, particularly those involving high dimensions. The proposed algorithm is inspired by the social behaviors of different groups within the rhinopithecus swarm. RSO categorizes the swarm into mature, adolescent, and infancy individuals. Due to this division of labor, each category of individuals employs unique search methods, including vertical migration, concerted search, and mimicry. To evaluate the effectiveness of RSO, we conducted experiments using the CEC2017 test set and three constrained engineering problems. Each function in the test set was independently executed 36 times. Additionally, we used the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Friedman test to analyze the performance of RSO compared to eight well-known optimization algorithms: Dung Beetle Optimizer (DBO), Beluga Whale Optimization (BWO), Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), African Vultures Optimization Algorithm (AVOA), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), Atomic Retrospective Learning Bare Bone Particle Swarm Optimization (ARBBPSO), Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimizer (GTO), and Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO). The results indicate that RSO exhibited outstanding performance on the CEC2017 test set for both 30 and 100 dimension. Moreover, RSO ranked first in both dimensions, surpassing the mean rank of the second-ranked algorithms by 7.69% and 42.85%, respectively. Across the three classical engineering design problems, RSO consistently achieves the best results. Overall, it can be concluded that RSO is particularly effective for solving high-dimensional optimization problems.

Abstract:With the development of science and technology, high-dimensional global optimization problems have become increasingly prevalent for scientific research and engineering, such as gene recognition, vehicle routing, job scheduling, and network topology. These problems are typically characterized by enormous and complex search spaces and numerous local minima, making it challenging to find the global optimal solution with limited computing resources. This paper introduces an enhanced sparrow search swarm optimizer (ESSSO) based on a bio-mimetic method. The ESSSO employs an adaptive sinusoidal walk strategy based on the von Mises distribution, a learning strategy utilizing roulette wheel selection, a two-stage evolution strategy, and a selection mutation strategy to address these issues. The proposed sinusoidal walk strategy, grounded in the von Mises distribution, supports a balanced evolutionary search. This mechanism disperses the individuals in a swarm in various directions based on a circular normal distribution. It then leads the search and adaptively adjusts their step sizes according to the size of the search domain during each generation of evolution. The learning strategy, based on roulette wheel selection, enhances the diversity of the population and improves the global search capability of the algorithm during the initial iterations. The two-stage evolution strategy involves a sine-learning mechanism based on the von Mises distribution and an adaptive mutation mechanism. The former is designed to boost the convergence speed of ESSSO, while the latter prevents ESSSO from getting trapped in a local optimum. Additionally, the selection mutation strategy further enhances convergence speed while maintaining population diversity. These strategies promote exploration in the early stages of evolution and exploitation in the later stages, enabling a well-balanced search for optimal solutions. We conducted comprehensive experiments two standard benchmark sets (i.e., CEC2010 and CEC2013), antenna array optimization, feature selection, and four engineering design problems. The results indicate that ESSSO outperforms ten comparison algorithms, especially in scenarios with smaller population sizes. This confirms its effectiveness in high-dimensional global optimization tasks and demonstrates that it can achieve better results with less computational resource consumption.

Abstract:In this paper, a new meta-heuristic algorithm, called beetle swarm optimization algorithm, is proposed by enhancing the performance of swarm optimization through beetle foraging principles. The performance of 23 benchmark functions is tested and compared with widely used algorithms, including particle swarm optimization algorithm, genetic algorithm (GA) and grasshopper optimization algorithm . Numerical experiments show that the beetle swarm optimization algorithm outperforms its counterparts. Besides, to demonstrate the practical impact of the proposed algorithm, two classic engineering design problems, namely, pressure vessel design problem and himmelblaus optimization problem, are also considered and the proposed beetle swarm optimization algorithm is shown to be competitive in those applications.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Ahead of Print. This research presents a multi-strategy augmented dung beetle algorithm (CDBO) for UAV path planning in intricate 3D environments. Its main objective is to address the path planning challenge by formulating an integrated cost function model and environment representation that aligns the optimisation task with the navigation prerequisites and safety constraints of the UAV. Firstly, the algorithm initialises the particle population based on the Lévy flight principle to improve the species diversity and adequately search the solution space. Subsequently, an exponentially decreasing inertia weighting strategy is introduced to improve the convergence speed of the algorithm. In addition, the algorithm uses an adaptive [math]-distribution with perturbed variation of the updated positions so that the algorithm avoids falling into a local optimum. Finally, to enhance the robustness of the system, the algorithm incorporates an elite retention strategy based on the Pareto principle. In this study, rigorous tests using 12 CEC2022 test functions and Wilcoxon rank sum test are conducted as benchmarks for the performance of the algorithm. The results show that the enhanced dung beetle algorithm outperforms the traditional algorithm, highlighting its efficiency and robustness. In addition, the efficacy of the enhanced dung beetle algorithm was validated in a variety of complex 3D environments, affirming its ability to generate optimal paths. Abstract:A swarm intelligence-based optimization algorithm, named Duck Swarm Algorithm (DSA), is proposed in this study, which is inspired by the searching for food sources and foraging behaviors of the duck swarm. Two rules are modeled from the finding food and foraging of the duck, which corresponds to the exploration and exploitation phases of the proposed DSA, respectively. The performance of the DSA is verified by using multiple CEC benchmark functions, where its statistical (best, mean, standard deviation, and average running-time) results are compared with seven well-known algorithms like Particle swarm optimization (PSO), Firefly algorithm (FA), Chicken swarm optimization (CSO), Grey wolf optimizer (GWO), Sine cosine algorithm (SCA), and Marine-predators algorithm (MPA), and Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA). Moreover, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, Friedman test, and convergence curves of the comparison results are utilized to prove the superiority of the DSA against other algorithms. The results demonstrate that DSA is a high-performance optimization method in terms of convergence speed and exploration–exploitation balance for solving the numerical optimization problems. Also, DSA is applied for the optimal design of six engineering constrained optimization problems and the node optimization deployment task of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Overall, the comparison results revealed that the DSA is a promising and very competitive algorithm for solving different optimization problems.

Abstract:In response to the shortcomings of Dwarf Mongoose Optimization (DMO) algorithm, such as insufficient exploitation capability and slow convergence speed, this paper proposes a multi-strategy enhanced DMO, referred to as GLSDMO. Firstly, we propose an improved solution search equation that utilizes the Gbest-guided strategy with different parameters to achieve a trade-off between exploration and exploitation (EE). Secondly, the Lévy flight is introduced to increase the diversity of population distribution and avoid the algorithm getting stuck in a local optimum. In addition, in order to address the problem of low convergence efficiency of DMO, this study uses the strong nonlinear convergence factor Sigmaid function as the moving step size parameter of the mongoose during collective activities, and combines the strategy of the salp swarm leader with the mongoose for cooperative optimization, which enhances the search efficiency of agents and accelerating the convergence of the algorithm to the global optimal solution (Gbest). Subsequently, the superiority of GLSDMO is verified on CEC2017 and CEC2019, and the optimization effect of GLSDMO is analyzed in detail. The results show that GLSDMO is significantly superior to the compared algorithms in solution quality, robustness and global convergence rate on most test functions. Finally, the optimization performance of GLSDMO is verified on three classic engineering examples and one truss topology optimization example. The simulation results show that GLSDMO achieves optimal costs on these real-world engineering problems.
