Abstract:By reacting an asymmetric semi-rigid V-shaped linker H(3)dpob (H(3)dpob = 3-(2'3'-dicarboxylphenoxy)benzoic acid) and Ln(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O, nine novel Ln-based luminescent materials, from 1D to 3D, namely {[Eu.dpob).phen)]center dot H2O}(n) (1), {[Ln(Hdpob)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (Ln = Eu(2), Sm(3), Gd(4), Tb(5)), {[Eu(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O}(n) (6), and {[Ln(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot mH(2)O} n (Ln = Eu(7), Gd(8), Tb(9), m = 0.5 for 7 and 9; m = 1 for 8) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; H(2)ox = oxalic acid) have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and PXRD. The crystal structures of 1-9 indicate that the coordination modes and coordination configuration of the H(3)dpob ligand play critical roles in the formation of the lanthanide architectures. Complexes 1-5 display multiple structures from double-stranded 1D chains to 4-connected 2D layers, through [Eu-2(CO2)(4)] or [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] dinuclear units with different auxiliary ligands. Complexes 6 and 7 are genuine supramolecular isomers which are induced by the concentration effect. 6 possesses a 2D kgd network with a Schlafli symbol of (4(3))(2)(4(6).6(6).8(3)) built from 6-connected [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] units and 3-connected H(3)dpob, which further connects to a (3,8)-connected tfz-d topology through O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. 7 displays a 3D (3,6)-connected rtl network with the Schlafli symbol (4.6(2))(2)(4(2).6(10).8(3)). Eu complexes 1, 2, 6, and 7 as well as Tb complexes 5 and 9 could provide intense and bright characteristic D-5(0) -> F-7(J)/D-5(4) -> F-7(J) red/green luminescence under UV excitation in the solid state at 298 K and 77 K. The calculated singlet and triplet energies of H(3)dpob as well as phen and H(2)ox ligands indicate that these ligands act as antenna chromophores that are able to efficiently absorb and transfer energy to Ln(III) ions. In complexes 1, 2 and 5, ligand-to-metal energy transfer processes could occur in mixed ligands. However, these processes occurred in a single H3dpob ligand in complexes 6 and 7. With careful adjustment of the relative concentration of the lanthanide ions and by varying the excitation wavelengths of {[Gd0.92Eu0.04Tb0.04(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O} n (10), tunable yellow (CIE coordinate: 0.51, 0.40) to white-light (CIE coordinate: 0.33, 0.34) emission has been obtained.
Magnetic and Luminescent Dual Responses of Photochromic Hexaazamacrocyclic Lanthanide Complexes

Abstract:Herein, hexaazamacrocyclic ligand LN6 was employed to construct a series of photochromic rare-earth complexes, [Ln(LN6)-(NO3)2](BPh4) [1-Ln, Ln = Dy, Tb, Eu, Gd, Y; LN6 = (3E,5E,10E,12E)- 3,6,10,13-tetraaza-1,8(2,6)-dipyridinacyclotetradecaphane-3,5,10,12-tet-raene]. The behavior of photogenerated radicals of hexaazamacrocyclic ligands was revealed for the first time. Upon 365 nm light irradiation, complexes 1-Ln exhibit photochromic behavior induced by photo-generated radicals according to EPR and UV-vis analyses. Static and dynamic magnetic studies of 1-Dy and irradiated product 1-Dy* indicate weak ferromagnetic interactions among DyIII ions and photogenerated LN6 radicals, as well as slow magnetization relaxation behavior under a 2 kOe applied field. Further fitting analyses show that the magnetization relaxation in 1-Dy* is markedly different from 1-Dy. Time-dependent fluorescence measurements reveal the characteristic luminescence quenching dynamics of lanthanide in the photochromic process. Especially for irradiated product 1-Eu*, the luminescence is almost completely quenched within 5 min with a quenching efficiency of 98.4%. The results reported here provide a prospect for the design of radical-induced photochromic lanthanide single-molecule magnets and will promote the further development of multiresponsive photomagnetic materials.
Demographic, Military, and Health Characteristics of VA Health Care Users and Nonusers Who Served in or During Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2009-2011

Abstract:An estimated 60% of all Operation Enduring Freedom / Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans who have left the military had used the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care services as of March 31, 2015. What is not known, however, are the differences in demographic, military, and health characteristics between OEF/OIF veterans who use the VA for health care and OEF/OIF veterans who do not. We used data from the 2009-2011 National Health Study for a New Generation of US Veterans to explore these differences. We found that VA health care users were more likely than non-VA health care users to be non-Hispanic black, to be unmarried, to have served on active duty and in the army, to have been deployed to OEF/OIF, and to have an annual income less than $35 000. The prevalence of 21 chronic medical conditions was higher among VA health care users than among non-VA health care users. OEF/OIF veterans using the VA for health care differ from nonusers with respect to demographic, military, and health characteristics. These data may be useful for developing programs and policies to address observed health disparities and achieve maximum benefit for the VA beneficiary population.

Abstract:A new family of lanthanide complexes with the general formula {[Ln(nphth)(Hnphth)(H2O)3·H2O]2}n (Ln=Pr, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, 1–5 and H2nphth=3-nitrophthalic acid) have been synthesized under hydrothermal condition and four of them have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy. These compounds are isostructural and the lanthanide ions are all nine coordinated and europium complex emits characteristic red fluorescence of Eu3+ ions at room temperature while other three lanthanide complexes exhibit the particular emission ascribed H2nphth ligand, which suggest that the different energy transfer process takes place.

Abstract:Dinuclear lanthanide complexes of the general for Ln2(TTA)4(PAN)2 (Ln=Eu, Gd, Tb, Yb; TTA and monodeprotonated thenoyltrifluoroacetone and PAN 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol, respectively) were prepared and structurally characterized. These novel complexes, representing the first examples of crystallographically characterized lanthanide–PAN complexes, each feature a dinuclear core with the metal atoms bridged by the phenolato O atoms of the chelating-bridging PAN ligands. Electronic spectroscopic and photoluminescence studies were carried out for the Eu(III) complex, and the results are consistent with ligand-mediated energy transfer and ligand-sensitized luminescence characteristic of Eu(III). The Eu(III) complex doped into a polymeric film was shown to effectively limit a nanosecond 523-nm laser pulse, and the limiting effect is rationalized in terms of reverse saturable absorption due to the strong absorption of the metal’s excited triplet states that are populated by intersystem crossing.

Abstract:Four mononuclear lanthanide complexes, [Ln(depma)2(H2O)6]Cl3·xH2O·yCH3OH [Ln = Dy (1Dy), x = 6, y = 0; Gd (2Gd), x = 3, y = 1; Er (3Er), x = 6, y = 0; Yb (4Yb), x = 3, y = 1; depma = 9-diethylphosphono-methylanthracene], are reported and structurally characterized. The octa-coordinated environment of LnIII is composed of two oxygen atoms from two different depma ligands and six oxygen atoms from each bound water molecule. All four complexes show photoluminescence in the solid state at room temperature, originating from the ligand-centered emissions of depma. Furthermore, slow magnetization relaxation is found in 1Dy, 3Er and 4Yb with the energy barriers (Ueff) of 40.5 K (1 kOe), 9.8 K (1 kOe) and 28.9 K (0.75 kOe), respectively.

Abstract:Several dinuclear lanthanide complexes of Ln2(HTH)6TPPHZ (Ln=Eu, Sm, Er, Nd, Yb, Ho; TPPHZ=Tetrapyrido (3,2-a:2′,3′-c:3′,2″-h:2′″,3′″-j) phenazine; HTH=4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluroro-1-(2-thienyl)hexane-1,3-dione were synthesized and their photoluminescence properties were investigated. After ligand-mediated excitation, all the complexes showed the characteristic luminescence of the corresponding Ln(III) ions in the visible and NIR regions attributed to energy transfer from the ligands to the metal center. For Eu2(HTH)6TPPHZ complex, the quantum efficiency was calculated as 9.6% with the major 5D0 lifetime (477.86 μs) by the equation ϕ=τobs/τR, where τobs was observed luminescence lifetime and τR was radiative (or natural) lifetime (5 ms), and 14.9% with air-equilibrated aqueous [Ru(bpy)3](II)·2Cl− solution as a standard sample (ϕstd=2.8%), in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature.

Abstract:Solid complexes of lanthanide nitrates with an novel multipodal ligand, 1,2,4,5-tetramethyl-3,6-bis{N,N-bis[((2'-furfurylaminoformyl)phenoxyl)ethyl]-aminomethyl}-benzene (L) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra and molar conductivity measurements. At the same time, the luminescent properties of the Sm(III), Eu(III), Tb(III) and Dy(III) nitrate complexes in solid state were investigated. Under the excitation of UV light, these complexes exhibited characteristic emission of central metal ions. The lowest triplet state energy level of the ligand indicates that the triplet state energy level (T1) of the ligand matches better the resonance level of Tb(III) than other lanthanide ions.

Abstract:A family of ternary beta-diketonate lanthanide(III)-cored complexes based on the combination of 2-(5-bromothiophen)imidazo[4,5-f] [1,10] phenanthroline (5-Br-TIP)/2-thiophenimidazo[4,54][1,10]phenanthroline (TIP) and 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate (TTA) ligands have been described herein, i.e. Ln(TTA)(3)(5-Br-TIP) [Ln = Eu (1), Dy (2), Er (3), Tb (4), Sm (5), Yb (6)] and Eu(ITA)(3)(TIP) (7). According to the fluorescence spectra of complexes 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7, characteristic luminescence of the Ln(3+) ions in the visible and near-infrared band ranges is observed, which is attributed to efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the metal centers. The room-temperature luminescence intensity of 7 is analogous to that of the strong fluorescent complex Eu(TTA)(3)(phen), but the fluorescence intensity of 1 is much weaker. In addition, complexes 1 and 7 show 1.1 and 1.4 times greater fluorescence intensity at 77 K compared with the fluorescence spectra at room temperature. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of homodinuclear lanthanide complexes Ln2(HTH)6Bpm (where Ln=Eu, Sm, Er, Yb, Pr; HTH=4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluroro-1-(2-thienyl)hexane-1,3-dione; Bpm=2,2′-bipyrimidine) were synthesized and the photoluminescence properties of these complexes are described. After ligand-mediated excitation of the complexes, they all show the characteristic luminescence of the corresponding Ln3+ ions in the visible and NIR regions attributed to efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the metal centres. For the Eu2(HTH)6Bpm complex a lifetime of 738.8μs (100%, χ2=1.362) is found in solid and two lifetimes of 455.4μs (12.88%) and 618.5μs (87.12%) (χ2=1.652) are found in CH2Cl2 solution, respectively. Its quantum efficiency in air-equilibrated CH2Cl2 solution is found to be 28.4%, by using air-equilibrated aqueous [Ru(bpy)3]2+·2Cl− solution as reference sample (Φstd=2.8%).

Abstract:OBJECTIVE This study sought to evaluate the existence and implications of familial aggregation of emotional and behavioral problems of childhood in a general population sample. METHOD The children included in the study were chosen with the use of a sampling technique that identified households in which there were two or more children aged 4-16 years living at home at the time of the survey. Ratings on checklists of emotional and behavioral problems were obtained from parents, teachers of children in elementary school, and the children themselves if they were adolescents aged 12-16. Children were classified as having problems if their scores on scales of conduct, attention deficit, or emotional problems were in the top 10% of the distribution of scores from any informant. RESULTS There was evidence for familial aggregation of these problems, particularly conduct and emotional problems. However, this was largely derived from the parents' reports of symptoms, not the teachers' or adolescents' reports. The degree of familial aggregation varied according to certain sibship characteristics and patterns of comorbidity. CONCLUSIONS Familial aggregation of emotional and behavioral problems does exist in a community population and is not simply an artifact of clinic attendance.
Effect of Doping on the Photodimerization Reaction and the Modulation of Magneto.optical Properties of Erbium. and Neodymium.anthracene Complexes

Abstract:Combining photoreactive anthracene moieties with lanthanide ions, we obtained three new isostructural mononuclear compounds with the formulas Ln(SCN)(2)(NO3)(depma)(2)(4-hpy) (2) (Ln=Er (Er-1), Nd (Nd-2), Y (Y-3), where depma is 9- diethylphosphonomethylanthracene, and their single molecule magnet and photodimerization behaviors were studied. All contain face- to-face p- p interacted anthracene groups that meet the Schmidt rule for a [4+4] photocycloaddition reaction. 1Er and 2Nd show characteristic near-infrared (NIR) luminescence owing to the efficient energy transfer from the ligand to the lanthanide ion, while 3Y displays excimer emission in the visible region. As a result, only 3Y underwent photocycloaddition reaction under 395 nm UV light irradiation to form [Y(SCN)(2)(NO3) (depma(2))(4-hpy) 2] n (Y-3. UV). Magnetic studies revealed a field- induced slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures for compounds 1Er and 2Nd, and the dominant relaxation process was the Raman process for Nd-2. After doping Er. or Nd. into 3Y, we constructed the isomorphic samples Ln(0.1)Y(0.9)(SCN)(2)(NO3)(depma)(2)(4-hpy) 2 (Ln= Er ( Er-1@Y), Nd (2Nd@Y)). Interestingly, the diluted samples exhibited an incomplete photocycloaddition reaction, accompanied by changes in their luminescence colors from yellow-green to blue. Furthermore, partial photocycloaddition of anthracene groups in 2Nd@Y led to a slight change in the magnetic dynamics, manifested by an increase in the n value of the Raman process from 3.8 (2Nd@ Y) to 5.2 (2Nd@Y. Abstract:The synthesis and properties of a new sensitizing bidentate ligand, diphenyl((5-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)methyl)phosphine oxide, 2, capable of demonstrating the emissive properties of lanthanide elements, is described. Two ligands are attached to LnCl3 moieties, Ln = Sm, Eu and Tb, resulting in complexes of formulae LnCl3(2)2. These complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and have geometries that are pentagonal bipyramidal with the two bidentate ligands in a cisoid conformation on the equatorial plane and the three chloride ligands in a mer-configuration. The coordination bond distances decrease from Sm to Tb paralleling the decrease in lanthanide ionic radii. The photoluminescent properties of these complexes were examined and, one of them, TbCl3(2)2, was assessed a ΦF of ca. 1.00. DFT calculations were conducted to understand the mechanism of proton transfer in ligand 2 for a hydrogen atom hopping between nitrogen atoms on the pyrazolyl moiety and, to assess aspects of the coordination sphere of the lanthanide complexes.

Abstract:Four 2D lanthanide complexes [Ln(2,6-DMBA)2(terpy)(NO3)]2·4(terpy) (Ln = Sm(1), Eu(2), Gd(3), Tb(4)); 2,6-DMBA = 2,6-dimethylbenzoate; terpy = 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine) were obtained via conventional solution method at room temperature. The crystal structures are characterized by IR, X-ray single crystal diffraction and elemental analysis. The results show that the four complexes are isomorphic, and the coordination number of each metal center is nine, showing a distorted monocapped square anti-prismatic geometry. The complexes 1-4 form a 2D supramolecular framework structure by CH⋯O hydrogen bond interactions. The thermal decomposition mechanism of complexes 1-4 were investigated by the technology TG/DSC-FTIR. The luminescence studies show that the crystal complexes 1, 2 and 4 have good luminescent properties and show good potential as fluorescent materials. The luminescence lifetimes of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes are 1.03 ms and 1.24 ms, respectively.

Abstract:Seven lanthanide complexes [Ln(OPPh3)3(NO3)3] (1–3) (OPPh3 = triphenylphosphine oxide, Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd), [Dy(OPPh3)4(NO3)2](NO3) (4), [Ln(OPPh3)3(NO3)3]2 (5–7) (Ln = Pr, Eu, Gd) were synthesized by the reactions of different lanthanide salts and OPPh3 ligand in the air. These complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, IR and fluorescence spectra. Structure analysis shows that complexes 1–4 are mononuclear complexes formed by OPPh3 ligands and nitrates. The asymmetric units of complexes 5–7 consist of two crystallographic-separate molecules. Complex 1 is self-assembled to construct a 2D layer-structure of (4,4) net topology by hydrogen bond interactions. The other complexes show a 1D chain-like structure that was assembled by OPPh3 ligands and nitrate ions through C–H···O interactions. Solid emission spectra of compounds 4 and 6 are assigned to the characteristic fluorescence of Tb3+ (λem = 480, 574 nm) and Eu3+ (λem = 552, 593, 619, 668 nm).

Abstract:Three dinuclear lanthanide complexes were prepared using 2,6-dimethylbenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline as main ligand and auxiliary ligand, namely: [Eu(2,6-DMBA)3(phen)]2(1), [Gd(2,6-DMBA)3(phen)]2·1.5H2O(2) and [Tb(2,6-DMBA)3(phen)]2·2.5H2O(3) (2,6-DMBA = 2,6-dimethylbenzoate; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) and characterized by Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the three complexes were centered on 9 coordination Ln(III) ions and form a single hat tetragonal inverse prism geometry with surrounding nitrogen and oxygen atoms. The adjacent structural units form a 1D chain structure through C–H…O hydrogen bond interaction. TG-DSC/FTIR was used to study the thermal decomposition mechanism of the complexes and the main components of gases escaping during the decomposition process. Solid-state fluorescence studies showed that complexes 1 and 3 emitted strong red and green light, respectively.

Abstract:The ligand Hhfth [4,4,5,5,6,6,6‐heptafluoro‐1‐(2‐thienyl)hexane‐1,3‐dione], which contains a heptafluoropropyl group, has been used to synthesize several new ternary lanthanide complexes (Ln = Er, Ho, Yb, Nd) in which the synergistic ligand is 1,10‐phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2′‐bipyridine (bipy). The two series of complexes are [Ln(hfth)3phen] [abbreviated as (Ln)1, where Ln = Er, Ho, Yb] and [Ln(hfth)3bipy] [abbreviated as (Ln)2, where Ln = Er, Ho, Yb, Nd]. Members of the two series have been structurally characterized. The growth morphology, diffuse reflectance (DR) spectra, thermogravimetric analyses, and photophysical studies of these complexes are described in detail. After ligand‐mediated excitation of the complexes, they all show the characteristic near‐infrared (NIR) luminescence of the corresponding Ln3+ ions (Ln = Er, Ho, Yb, Nd). Abstract:. Lanthanide complexes Ln(bta) 3 L 2 (Ln 3+ : Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ and Ho 3+ ; bta: benzoyltrifluoroacetonate; L: N-octadecyl-2-hydroxy-4-tetradecyloxybenzal- dimine) are synthesized. Their photoacoustic (PA) spectra are reported and interpreted. In the region of ligand absorption, PA intensity increases for Eu(bta) 3 L 2 , Tb(bta) 3 L 2 and Ho(bta) 3 L 2 , respectively. It is found that the PA intensity of the ligand bears a relation to the intramolecular energy transfer process. By comparison with luminescence spectra, the energy transfer process and phase transition of lanthanide complexes are studied from two aspects: radiative and nonradiative processes.

Abstract:The synthesis and structure determination of five novel lanthanide complexes {[Ln(3,5-DmeoxBA)3(phen)]2 (Ln=Pr(1) Nd (2), Sm (3), Eu (4), and Ho (5); 3,5-DmeoxBA = 3,5-Dimethoxybenzoate; phen=1,10-phenanthroline)} are reported. In the isomorphous complexes 1 to 5, two Ln3+ ions are connected together by four bridging 3,5-DmeoxBA ligands. Each Ln3+ ion is octa-coordinated, yielding a distorted square-antiprism comformation. The thermal properties of the title complexes were investigated by simultaneous TG/DSC-FTIR techniques. The activation energy E values of the first decomposition stage for complexes 1 to 5 were calculated by integral iso-conversional non-linear (NL-INT) and Starink methods. Heat capacities of the five complexes were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). And the values of the experimental heat capacities were fitted to a polynomial equation with the least-squares method. Furthermore, based on the fitted polynomial and thermodynamic equations, the smoothed heat capacities and thermodynamic functions (HT–H298.15K), (ST–S298.15K), and (GT–G298.15K) were calculated. The fluorescent property of complex 4 was also studied.

Abstract:Six new binuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(2,4-DMBA)3(terpy)(H2O)]2 (Ln = Eu <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0005">(1)</a>, La <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0010">(2)</a>, Pr <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0015">(3)</a>, Nd <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0020">(4)</a>, Sm <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0025">(5)</a>, Gd <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0030">(6)</a>) (2,4-DMBA = 2,4-dimethylbenzoate; terpy = 2,2:6',2"-terpyridine) and four mononuclear complexes [Ln(2,4-DMBA)3(terpy)(H2O)] (Ln = Dy <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0035">(7)</a>, Ho (8), Er (9), Tb (10)) have been synthesized. Complexes 1–6 and 7–10 are isomorphous, adopting interesting structures. In the structures of complexes 1–6, two nine-coordinated Ln(III) centers are linked by two 2,4-DMBA ligands in bridging mode. The other two 2,4-DMBA ligands coordinate with one Ln(III) cation in monodentate and chelating modes. In the structures of complexes 7–10, the Ln(III) center is eight-coordinated. Complexes 1–6 and 7–10 can each aggregate to form one-dimensional and two-dimensional supramolecular structures. Thermal decomposition of complexes 1–10 has been investigated by TG-DSC/FTIR. Interestingly, all of the complexes exhibit a similar three-step decomposition process. The Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes show strong red and green visible light luminescence. Finally, fluorescence lifetimes and intrinsic quantum yields have been calculated for complexes 1 and 10.
