Abstract:Despite the growing attention to non-cognitive factors and their effects explored in studies inspired by Positive Psychology, there remains a scarcity of research examining how these factors impact young heritage learners' language development in Chinese as a Heritage Language (CHL) learning, weakening the generalization of prior findings. Given the importance of speaking ability in developing communication skills and fostering language proficiency, this study investigates the interplay effects of L2 grit, motivational intensity, and willingness to communicate (WTC) on the L2 speaking performance among young CHL learners (N N = 383), employing structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings indicate that 1) L2 grit, which encompasses perseverance of effort (PE) and consistency of interest (CI), significantly and positively predicts motivational intensity; 2) PE and WTC are direct predictors of speaking performance, whereas CI is not a direct predictor; 3) CI indirectly predicts speaking performance through the mediation of WTC; and 4) both PE and CI can positively predict speaking performance through the serial mediation of motivational intensity and WTC. The research concludes by presenting its implications for CHL educators and instructors in designing tailored approaches to enhancing young learners' speaking skills within the framework of heritage language and beyond.
Emotional Intelligence as a Predictor of EFL Learners’ Willingness to Communicate

Abstract:Emotional intelligence (EI) as a recent notion in psychology has rightly found its way into studies related to foreign language learning (FLL). Appreciating its significance, the present study was conducted to test EI in relation to English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' willingness to communicate (WTC). To do so, 67 EFL learners filled out the EI questionnaire and WTC in a foreign language questionnaire. Pearson product moment correlation was employed to explore the existence of any possible correlation between the two variables, and Multiple Regression analysis was used to indicate the degree of prediction of each EI component in EFL learners' WTC. The results indicated a significant correlation between the participants' EI and their WTC. Among the six components of EI, Utilization of Emotions in Problem Solving (UEPS) and Emotional Regulation of Others (ERO) proved highly capable of predicting the participants' WTC. As it is plausible to promote and heighten emotional aspects alongside social interactional aspects in classrooms on the one hand and as EI facilitates communication considerably on the other, giving special consideration and importance to EI in EFL classrooms seems to be highly effective.
Relationship among critical thinking, multiple intelligence, and Iranian EFL learners’ speaking skill

Abstract:Focusing on multiple intelligence (MI) and critical thinking (CT), which are often thought to be the important factors in improving second language (L2) learners’ skills, has been the major concern of researchers in recent decades. This study investigated the (possible) relationship among MI, CT, and Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking skill. Seventy intermediate participants were chosen from Shahrekord University, Iran, and a language institute in Yazd, Iran. To identify the participants’ MI profiles, the Persian translation of McKenzie’s MI Inventory Questionnaire was administered to the participants. Also, to determine the participants’ CT, the Persian translation of California CT Skill Test was used. Thereafter, the participants’ speaking skill was measured by the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) speaking test. Results of the Pearson correlation coefficient showed that there was not any significant relationship between the participants’ MI and the speaking skill, whereas there was a significant relationship between their CT and speaking skill. In addition, the results revealed that, first, MI and the speaking skill did not correlate significantly and, second, the findings showed that the higher the participants were critical thinkers, the better and more fluent they were in their L2 speaking. Findings have some implications for L2 practitioners, students, administrators, and researchers in English language teaching, suggesting the incorporation of and CT skills in L2 learners’ class activities and their textbooks.

Relationship between using educational technology and academic passion with academic achievement and creative self-efficacy: structural equations modelling approach

Abstract:This study aims to determine the relationship between educational technology (ET) and academic passion (AP) with English Foreign Language ( EFL) learners' creative self-efficacy (CSE) and academic achievement (AA). Few studies have been conducted in this field. The sample of the present study includes all intermediate language learners, including 5800 people. There are 28 institutes in Zanjan city (16 for females and 12 for males). The researchers used the multi-stage sampling method for selecting participants. In the first stage, out of 28 institutions two institutions (one male and one female institution) were selected by a simple randomized method. For gathering data, four questionnaires were administered to collect data: CSE, ET, AP, and AA. SPSS 26 and AMOS 24 software were used to analyze the collected data from questionnaires. Descriptive, inferential, and Structural Covariance Matrix (SEM) statistics were conducted to explore the relationship among these variables. The results show that the application of ET has a positive and significant effect on CSE, AP, and ET. Considering the relationship between ET and these variables, it is recommended that the authorities adopt programs to promote using ET for students and thus be effective in increasing the AP with CSE and AA of EFL learners.

The Influence of Task Complexity, Task Difficulty and Proficiency Level on Chinese Students' Accuracy in Performance

Abstract:It has now been widely acknowledged that both accuracy and fluency should be the ideal goals of language teaching. The field of TEFL is now witnessing strong interests in the idea of seeking a balance between meaning and form in instruction and accordingly accuracy and fluency in students' production. Much literature has been devoted to the theoretical and practical concerns of fluency and the research on accuracy remains a fertile but unexplored field. With the information processing model of language learning as a departure, the present study explores the influences of task complexity, task difficulty and proficiency level on Chinese students' accurate performance in communication and their interactional effects. Forty-eight subjects from Zhejiang University, all freshmen and non-English majors, participated in the research. They were at different levels of proficiency in English. There were two between-subject factors (Processing condition and Proficiency level) and one within-subject factor (task type) in the design. Effects of task complexity on accuracy were studied from two different perspectives: we studied task complexity owing to inherent task structure, content or condition and the variable was indicated by three task types; we also investigated the effects of manipulating task complexity and the factor was opera-tionalized as two performance conditions: planning and no planning. Subjects were divided into small groups, with four in each. Half of the groups were randomly assigned to planning condition and half to no planning condition. Each group had to do all the three tasks. While completing the tasks, subjects under both conditions were audio taped. Immediately following performance of each task, subjects were asked to complete a brief questionnaire composed of five items. Responses to these five items were used to measure learner perceptions of task difficulty. All the quantitative data were processed by SPSS for windows 10. ANOVAs, Correlations and Linear Regression analyses were used respectively to analyze the relationships between the variables and the interactions between them. The significance level was set at . 05 level. Some quantitative data were also collected to answer the call for triangulation. The findings of the study show that task complexity does exert considerable influences on accuracy and accuracy is in reverse relationship with task complexity, with more complex tasks resulting in lower accuracy. Proficiency level has a prevalent impact on accuracy, with learners at higher levels producing more accurate language, but there is no significant interaction between proficiency level and task complexity. Subjects, in spite of their proficiency levels, achieve higher accuracy in less complex tasks and participants at higher proficiency levels consistently produce more accurate language in any task. Some affective factors contributing to task difficulty are correlated with accuracy, among which perception of overall difficulty and stress are most prominent. They are both significantly negatively correlated with accuracy. In addition to planning, task structure and task condition are found to be relevant to task complexity.
Can Learning a Foreign Language Foster Analytic Thinking?—Evidence from Chinese EFL Learners' Writings

Abstract:Language is not only the representation of thinking, but also shapes thinking. Studies on bilinguals suggest that a foreign language plays an important and unconscious role in thinking. In this study, a software—Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count 2007—was used to investigate whether the learning of English as a foreign language (EFL) can foster Chinese high school students’ English analytic thinking (EAT) through the analysis of their English writings with our self-built corpus. It was found that: (1) learning English can foster Chinese learners’ EAT. Chinese EFL learners’ ability of making distinctions, degree of cognitive complexity and degree of thinking activeness have all improved along with the increase of their English proficiency and their age; (2) there exist differences in Chinese EFL learners’ EAT and that of English native speakers, i. e. English native speakers are better in the ability of making distinctions and degree of thinking activeness. These findings suggest that the best EFL learners in high schools have gained native-like analytic thinking through six years’ English learning and are able to switch their cognitive styles as needed.

Abstract:This study investigates the relationship between English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' global trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) as well as its four constituent factors (well-being, self-control, emotionality, and sociability) and their overall English performance as well as their listening, speaking, reading and writing performance. Seventy-two Chinese postgraduate EFL learners were administered the short-form Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire and an English proficiency test. Descriptive data showed that the subjects generally perceived themselves as having a moderate to high trait EI, with a relatively high well-being and low sociability, and the four factors showed inter- and intra-subject variety. Small to medium correlations were found between students' global trait EI, well-being, and emotionality with their overall, listening, and speaking performance. Regression analysis revealed that students' global EI significantly predicted their overall, speaking and listening performance. Among the four factors, well-being had a significant influence on students' overall and listening performance; well-being and self-control as well as self-control and emotionality had significant interaction effects on students' speaking performance. These findings highlight the complex and multifaceted nature of trait EI and its interactive role in second language learning. Theoretical and practical implications as well as research limitations are discussed accordingly.

Insight from the association between critical thinking and English argumentative writing: catering to English learners’ writing ability

Abstract:Introduction English argumentative writing (EAW) is a ‘problem-solving’ cognitive process, and its relationship with critical thinking has drawn attention in China. This is because fostering EAW proficiency is a crucial element but a challenging task for Chinese high school English teaching and learning. The present study examined how critical thinking is related to Chinese high school students’ EAW performance. The study identified eight critical thinking disposition (CTD) subscales and aims to determine whether EAW and CTD are correlated. Methods A questionnaire modified from the Chinese Version Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CTDI-CV) and the Evaluation Criteria for English Argumentative Writing (ECEAW) were employed in this study. Both instruments were administered to 156 students from Grade 12. A purposive sampling of high school students was used in this study. Student EAW performance was scored by two experts based on the Evaluation Criteria for English Argumentative Writing. Results A significant relationship was found between students’ CTD and EAW abilities. Furthermore, among the eight CTD subdispositions, cognitive maturity, truth-seeking, analyticity, and justice were found to be positively correlated with EAW, and they all were found to be the main predictors of EAW proficiency among high school students. Conclusion Zhangzhou high school students’ CTDs were overall positive, and students’ EAW performance correlated significantly with the overall CTD and its four subdispositions of cognitive maturity, truth-seeking, analyticity, and justice. These four subdispositions showed a significantly predictive validity on EAW performance as well.

Abstract:There is ample evidence that the success or failure of language learning is influenced by psychological processes in learners' minds. This review attempted to review the related studies on the relationship between English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' emotional intelligence, communication apprehension, and self-efficacy. Few studies have been done on the correlation between self-efficacy and emotional intelligence. A positive significant correlation between emotional intelligence and self-efficacy has been confirmed in the literature. Studies have shown that interpersonal relationships, self-awareness, problem-solving skills, self-adequacy, self-confidence, self-actualization, and stress tolerance can act as mediator variables in the correlation between self-efficacy and emotional intelligence among EFL learners. Moreover, the related studies have shown that emotional intelligence is significantly correlated with communication apprehension. The investigations have accentuated the mediating role of learners' willingness to communicate and academic achievement in the correlation between emotional intelligence and communication apprehension. The correlation between communication apprehension and self-efficacy has been verified in the related literature. Finally, the pedagogical implications are expanded to foster language learning quality. This review also provides some suggestions for further research to elucidate our viewpoints over emotional variables and their interactions with each other.

Abstract:The present study investigated the interactions of trait emotional intelligence (trait EI), foreign language anxiety (FLA), and foreign language enjoyment (FLE) in the foreign language speaking classroom. Data collected from 274 Chinese postgraduate EFL learners showed that the subjects generally had medium to high scores on global trait EI; in terms of the four trait EI factors, they scored relatively high on emotionality and well-being, followed in turn by self-control and sociability. They had high mean levels of FLE and moderate to high mean levels of FLA. Significant small to medium correlations were found between trait EI, FLE, and FLA. Regressions revealed that trait EI was a stronger predictor of FLA than of FLE. Trait EI played a fundamental role in its significant interactions with FLA and FLE. In addition, well-being and emotionality figured significantly to both FLE and FLA, while sociability only significantly predicted FLA. High levels of self-control hindered the effect of other significant factors. It is implied that fostering learners' trait EI can potentially boost FLE and alleviate FLA. The findings also offer suggestions for the development of EI-based intervention programmes.

Abstract:Psychological factors, such as the fear of misunderstandings, making grammatical mistakes, and academic demotivation contribute to students' anxiety when speaking English in language classes. Some students may struggle to contribute actively to tasks and activities in English because they do not perceive themselves to be autonomous agents, feel engaged with the specific task, or are more generally academically demotivated. It is a critical goal of all English language teachers to assist these students in developing academic self-confidence and autonomy and in honing their spoken English. Drawing upon a quantitative method, the current study delved into a university setting to investigate the impact of autonomy and academic engagement on willingness to communicate, foreign language learning self-esteem, and L2 grit in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Three hundred eighty-seven EFL students completed a survey. The results of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), along with the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) as part of the measurement model validation, demonstrated that enhancing the EFL students' autonomy and academic engagement could significantly foster their willingness to communicate in English, as well as their self-esteem, and L2 grit. Overall, the results highlighted how the two pillars of self-determination theory, autonomy and academic engagement, contribute to positive psychology outcomes in the EFL domain. Relevant pedagogical consequences of this investigation are discussed based on the findings of the study.

Abstract:The goal of critical thinking for students is to help them learn how to think critically and systematically so they can solve problems and make informed decisions. It aids students in developing their capacity for independent thought, allowing them to generate their own conclusions and base those decisions on facts and evidence. Therefore, one of the key goals of this study was to explore the factors affecting critical thinking of English as foreign language (EFL) learners. This article used social cognitive theory (SCT) to investigate how personal and cognitive factors affect EFL learners' critical thinking. Data from 305 Chinese EFL learners were collected online, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to evaluate the data. The results showed that metacognitive learning strategies (MLS) were positively related to critical thinking and that self-efficacy, self-oriented learning perfectionism, and learner anxiety were significantly related to MLS. Moreover, MLS mediated the link between self-efficacy, self-oriented learning perfectionism, learner anxiety, and critical thinking. The findings further indicated that learner proactivity moderated the association between MLS and critical thinking. By applying social cognitive theory to examine the variables influencing EFL learners' critical thinking, this study adds uniqueness. It does this by emphasizing the moderating influence of learner proactivity and the mediating function of metacognitive learning strategies. The findings of the research have significant ramifications for educators since they emphasize how vital it is to support metacognitive strategies for learning in order to improve EFL learners' critical thinking abilities. Additionally, to create an atmosphere that is favorable for the development of critical thinking skills in EFL education, policymakers should think about implementing support systems and interventions that focus on learner anxiety, learner proactivity, and self-efficacy.
A Mixed-Methods Investigation into the Interplay Between Supportive Work Environment, Achievement Emotions, and Teaching for Creativity as Perceived by Chinese EFL Teachers

Abstract:Teaching for creativity (TfC) has recently received increased attention in English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) contexts. Previous studies confirmed that TfC links with achievement emotions (AEs) in this context. Additionally, a supportive work environment (SWE) has been shown to be associated with AEs. However, relationships among all three variables - SWE, AEs, and TfC - have not been adequately explored in EFL contexts, nor have the underlying bases for these links been elucidated. In this study, we adopted a mixed-methods approach to investigate the complex associations between SWE, AEs (anxiety, pride, enjoyment, and anger), and TfC as perceived by 441 Chinese EFL teachers. Quantitative results revealed that SWE, four AEs, and TfC were significantly correlated, with small to large effect sizes. Furthermore, the four AEs collectively mediated the relationship between SWE and TfC in our structural equation model. Qualitative interviews with 15 EFL teachers provided nuanced insights into possible reasons for these statistical patterns. We discuss the theoretical and pedagogical implications of these findings and suggest directions for future research.

Abstract:The consideration of students’ emotional and psychological health is crucial to facilitate effective teaching and grading practices. This study set out to shed light on the interplay between self-esteem (S-E), cognitive-emotion regulation (CER), academic enjoyment (AE), and language success (LS) in artificial intelligence (AI)-supported online language learning. To this end, the foreign language learning self-esteem scale, the Cognitive Emotion Control Questionnaire, the foreign language enjoyment scale, and a researcher-made test were distributed to 389 English as a foreign language learners in China. Screening the data with confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling, the effects of S-E, CER, AE, and LS were identified and quantified. These results highlighted the important function that online courses assisted by AI perform in enhancing students’ CER and AE. This implied that students who have cultivated a robust sense of self-efficacy are adept at effectively regulating their cognitive and affective processes in AI-supported language learning. Possible improvements in language education are discussed, as are the study’s broader implications.

Abstract:Effective learning is the ultimate goal in every educational system, which can be achieved by considering the intertwined relationships of both cognitive and affective procedures. In line with this argument, this study intends to shed light on the impact of Emotion Based Language Instruction (EBLI) in enhancing teaching productive skills (speaking and writing) to EFL students. To do so, Quasi-Experimental Study was carried out among Iranian English as foreign language (EFL) students. The learning materials and the supplementary parts were selectively developed based on the Metric of Emotioncy designed by Pishghadam (2016). To observe the influence of EBLI, the differences in scores of pre and posttest of IELTS were statistically calculated. The results displayed a significant change in speaking and writing skills among students in the experimental group. The findings of the present study may foster EBLI implementation and increase the related knowledge in teaching foreign/second languages.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to see whether it is possible to enhance emotional intelligence (henceforth, EI) through prepared literature response activities based on Goleman's framework, and (2) to see whether there is any relationship between EI and EFL learners’ reading comprehension achievement. The participants of the study consisted of 63 students studying Interchange 2 course in a language center in Iran. To make sure of the initial comparability of the two groups, a reading comprehension test of 30 items and the TEIQue-ASF (Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Adolescent Short Form, which is used to measure global trait EI) was administered prior to the experiment. Then, some pieces of literary work including short stories with highly emotional content were given to the students of experimental group with the express purpose of inducing them to talk about their emotions and raising their emotional intelligence. Results indicated that the participants in the experimental group showed greater achievement in reading comprehension and they scored higher on our EI test than students who were taught under the ordinary approaches that did not place any emphasis on the emotional content or words. The results also have some implications for EFL teachers and practitioners.

Abstract:Abstract Self-assessment and reflective thinking (RT) can arm learners to monitor and evaluate their learning progress. Despite the long history of the core of self-assessment (CSA) and RT, little is known about how they may contribute to learner enjoyment (LE) and learner immunity (LI). Therefore, the current research attempted to propose a model to depict the interplay among CSA, RT, LE, and LI. To this end, the Core of Self-Assessment Questionnaire (CSAQ), Reflective Thinking Questionnaire (RTQ), Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale (FLES), and Language Student Immunity Instrument (LSIS) were administered to 518 Iranian EFL university students. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that EFL university students with higher levels of CSA and RT skills experienced more enjoyment and were immunized productively. Furthermore, the critical role of RT in CSA was discovered. The implications of this study may unveil new prospects for implementing learning-oriented assessment in the classroom and RT practices in educational programs.

Abstract:As part of the human-computer interaction (HCI) that artificial intelligence has, it has a specific effect on developing critical thinking skills, which is what this study is looking at. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of AI friend apps on EFoLLe (English foreign language learners) interactions with technology. The primary focus of this paper is on a new artificial intelligence-based immersion teaching method for university-level English. Students’ English proficiency and CT are the primary goals of this course. This study employs mixed methods research design using an online survey and classroom observation. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques helped researchers to understand deeply. Still, little research was used to look at the survey and how people acted while they were learning how to use AI to improve CT skills. The participants in this paper were polled using an online survey. A total of 453 people participated in the survey. According to the outcomes of the study, AI friends to enhance students’ critical thinking abilities has a positive impact among the participants. Because AI-based instruction promotes students’ trust, self-confidence, open-mindedness, and maturity in English, it can help them improve their critical thinking skills. This is because critical thinking skills are the foundation for 21st-century skills, and AI-based instruction helps students learn these skills. This study helped AI-based instruction because it helps nonnative English students become more trusting, self-confident, open-minded, and mature in English. It also helps them learn the CT skills that are the foundation of critical thinking, so they can learn new skills in the 21stcentury.
Emotional intelligence and second/foreign language achievement: A meta-analytic review

Abstract:Language Teaching Research, Ahead of Print. A growing body of literature examined the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in second/foreign language learning (L2) achievement. Though positive relationships have been reported, negative or non-significant relationships were also found. To date no study has quantitatively synthesized the overall effect size between EI and L2 achievement or the potential moderators influencing their relationship. The current meta-analysis fills this research gap by examining 39 independent studies with a cumulative sample size of 6,571 participants. Random-effects model yielded moderate-to-large coefficients (r = .43, 95% CI: .32−.53 with actual language performance as the outcome; r = .43, 95% CI: .19−.61 with perceived language proficiency as the outcome). Moderation analyses showed that the effect was stronger for female, collectivistic culture, and final grades as language measures (as opposed to standardized tests) but not influenced by educational level, major, specificity of L2 achievement, skills of language learning or publication year. Reasons for the effect, possible explanations for moderating effects, and pedagogical implications are discussed.

Abstract:The influence of (trait) emotional intelligence (TEI) on academic achievement has been documented in literature, while its influence in the specific domain of L2 learning remains underexplored. The link between EI and negative emotions especially anxiety has been studied in different contexts including applied linguistics. However, it remains unknown how EI is related to positive emotions in L2 learning. Underpinned by theories and assumptions of Positive Psychology, the present study examined the complex relationships between 1307 Chinese high school students' TEI, Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE), and English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learning achievement. The following findings were obtained: (1) Most Chinese high school EFL students reported moderate to high levels of TEI, while low to moderate levels of FLE; (2) Small to medium correlations were found among students' TEI, FLE, self-perceived English achievement and actual English achievement; (3) TEI was partially mediated by FLE to influence perceived achievement and actual achievement indirectly. The results were discussed in accordance with previous relevant findings as well as their theoretical and practical implications for L2 teaching and learning.
