Abstract:This study investigates how top-down attention modulates neural tracking of the speech envelope in different listening conditions. In the quiet conditions, a single speech stream was presented and the subjects paid attention to the speech stream (active listening) or watched a silent movie instead (passive listening). In the competing speaker (CS) conditions, two speakers of opposite genders were presented diotically. Ongoing electroencephalographic (EEG) responses were measured in each condition and cross-correlated with the speech envelope of each speaker at different time lags. In quiet, active and passive listening resulted in similar neural responses to the speech envelope. In the CS conditions, however, the shape of the cross-correlation function was remarkably different between the attended and unattended speech. The cross-correlation with the attended speech showed stronger N1 and P2 responses but a weaker P1 response compared to the cross-correlation with the unattended speech. Furthermore, the N1 response to the attended speech in the CS condition was enhanced and delayed compared with the active listening condition in quiet, while the P2 response to the unattended speaker in the CS condition was attenuated compared with the passive listening in quiet. Taken together, these results demonstrate that top-down attention differentially modulates envelope-tracking neural activity at different time lags and suggest that top-down attention can both enhance the neural responses to the attended sound stream and suppress the responses to the unattended sound stream.
Neurophysiological Evaluation of Right-Ear Advantage During Dichotic Listening

Abstract:Right-ear advantage refers to the observation that when two different speech stimuli are simultaneously presented to both ears, listeners report stimuli more correctly from the right ear than the left. It is assumed to result from prominent projection along the auditory pathways to the contralateral hemisphere and the dominance of the left auditory cortex for the perception of speech elements. Our study aimed to investigate the role of attention in the right-ear advantage. We recorded magnetoencephalography data while participants listened to pairs of Japanese two-syllable words (namely, “/ta/ /ko/” or “/i/ /ka/”). The amplitudes of the stimuli were modulated at 35 Hz in one ear and 45 Hz in the other. Such frequency-tagging allowed the selective quantification of left and right auditory cortex responses to left and right ear stimuli. Behavioral tests confirmed the right-ear advantage, with higher accuracy for stimuli presented to the right ear than to the left. The amplitude of the auditory steady-state response was larger when attending to the stimuli compared to passive listening. We detected a correlation between the attention-related increase in the amplitude of the auditory steady-state response and the laterality index of behavioral accuracy. The right-ear advantage in the free-response dichotic listening was also found in neural activities in the left auditory cortex, suggesting that it was related to the allocation of attention to both ears.

Abstract:Persons with single-sided deafness (SSD) typically complain about the impaired ability to locate sounds and to understand speech within background noise. However, the findings from previous studies suggest that paying attention to sounds could mitigate the degraded spatial and speech-in-noise perception. In the present study, we characterize the pattern of cortical activation depending on the side of deafness, and attentional modulation of neural responses to determine if it can assist better sound processing in people with SSD. For the active listening condition, adult subjects with SSD performed sound localization tasks. On the other hand, they watched movies without attending to speech stimuli during passive listening. The sensor-level global field power of N1 and source-level N1 activation were computed to compare the active- and passive-listening conditions and left- and right-sided deafness. The results show that attentional modulation differs depending on the side of deafness: active listening increased the cortical activity in individuals with left-sided deafness but not in those with right-sided deafness. At the source level, the attentional gain was more apparent in left-sided deafness in that paying attention enhanced brain activation in both hemispheres. In addition, SSD participants with larger cortical activities in the right primary auditory cortex had shorter durations of deafness. Our results indicate that the side of deafness can change top-down attentional processing in the auditory cortical pathway in SSD patients.
Selective Attention Modulates Human Auditory Brainstem Responses: Relative Contributions of Frequency and Spatial Cues

Abstract:Selective attention is the mechanism that allows focusing one's attention on a particular stimulus while filtering out a range of other stimuli, for instance, on a single conversation in a noisy room. Attending to one sound source rather than another changes activity in the human auditory cortex, but it is unclear whether attention to different acoustic features, such as voice pitch and speaker location, modulates subcortical activity. Studies using a dichotic listening paradigm indicated that auditory brainstem processing may be modulated by the direction of attention. We investigated whether endogenous selective attention to one of two speech signals affects amplitude and phase locking in auditory brainstem responses when the signals were either discriminable by frequency content alone, or by frequency content and spatial location. Frequency-following responses to the speech sounds were significantly modulated in both conditions. The modulation was specific to the task-relevant frequency band. The effect was stronger when both frequency and spatial information were available. Patterns of response were variable between participants, and were correlated with psychophysical discriminability of the stimuli, suggesting that the modulation was biologically relevant. Our results demonstrate that auditory brainstem responses are susceptible to efferent modulation related to behavioral goals. Furthermore they suggest that mechanisms of selective attention actively shape activity at early subcortical processing stages according to task relevance and based on frequency and spatial cues.

Abstract:Social media brand communities have been widely adopted by marketers as a marketing channel to engage consumers, and by consumers as a source of product/brand information prior to their purchase decisions. The popularity of social media brand communities has attracted some academic research efforts. However, there still exist important research gaps to be addressed in the existing literature. First, previous studies only focused on the impact of consumers’ engagement in the community of a brand on their purchases from that particular brand. However, consumers could have preference for multiple brands within a product class. As such, the impact of engagement in the community of a brand on consumers’ purchases from other preferred alternative brands remains unknown. Second, previous studies implicitly assumed that consumers only engage in a single community of a preferred brand. However, consumers would engage in multiple communities of multiple preferred brands within a product class. As such, the impact of consumers’ engagement in communities of multiple similar brands on their purchases from those engaged brands also remains unknown. This study thus proposes a set of research hypotheses, aiming to fill these research gaps. The findings from this study would offer several notable theoretical contributions.
Dichotic listening and interhemispheric integration after callosotomy: A systematic review

Abstract:The right-ear advantage (REA) for recalling dichotically presented auditory-verbal stimuli has been traditionally linked to the dominance of the left cerebral hemisphere for speech processing. Early studies on patients with callosotomy additionally found that the removal of the corpus callosum leads to a complete extinction of the left ear, and consequently the today widely used models to explain the REA assume a central role of callosal axons for recalling the left-ear stimulus in dichotic listening. However, later dichotic-listening studies on callosotomy patients challenge this interpretation, as many patients appear to be able to recall left-ear stimuli well above chance level, albeit with reduced accuracy. The aim of the present systematic review was to identify possible experimental and patient variables that explain the inconsistences found regarding the effect of split-brain surgery on dichotic listening. For this purpose, a systematic literature search was conducted (databases: Pubmed, Web of Knowledge, EBSChost, and Ovid) to identify all empirical studies on patients with surgical section of the corpus callosum (complete or partial) that used a verbal dichotic-listening paradigm. This search yielded k s = 32 publications reporting patient data either on case or group level, and the data was analysed by comparing the case-level incidence of left-ear suppression, left-ear extinction, and right-ear enhancement narratively or statistically considering possible moderator variables (i.a., extent of the callosal surgery, stimulus material, response format, selective attention). The main finding was an increased incidence of left-ear suppression (odds ratio = 7.47, CI 95% : [1.21; 83.49], exact p = .02) and right-ear enhancement (odds ratio = 21.61, CI 95% : [4.40; 154.11], p < .01) when rhyming as compared with non-rhyming stimuli were used. Also, an increase in left-ear reports was apparent when a response by the right hemisphere was allowed (i.e., response with left hand). While the present review is limited by the overall small number of cases and a lack of an appropriate control sample in most of the original studies, the findings nevertheless suggest an adjustment of the classical dichotic-listening models incorporating right-hemispheric processing abilities as well as the perceptual competition of the left- and right-ear stimuli for attention.

Enhanced Osteoclastogenesis Causes Osteopenia in Twisted Gastrulation‐Deficient Mice Through Increased BMP Signaling

Abstract:The uncoupling of osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity is central to disorders such as osteoporosis, osteolytic malignancies, and periodontitis. Numerous studies have shown explicit functions for bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in skeletogenesis. Their signaling activity has been shown in various contexts to be regulated by extracellular proteins, including Twisted gastrulation (TWSG1). However, experimental paradigms determining the effects of BMP regulators on bone remodeling are limited. In this study, we assessed the role of TWSG1 in postnatal bone homeostasis. Twsg1‐deficient (Twsg1−/−) mice developed osteopenia that could not be explained by defective osteoblast function, because mineral apposition rate and differentiation markers were not significantly different compared with wildtype (WT) mice. Instead, we discovered a striking enhancement of osteoclastogenesis in Twsg1−/− mice, leading to increased bone resorption with resultant osteopenia. Enhanced osteoclastogenesis in Twsg1−/− mice was caused by increased cell fusion, differentiation, and function of osteoclasts. Furthermore, RANKL‐mediated osteoclastogenesis and phosphorylated Smad1/5/8 levels were enhanced when WT osteoclasts were treated with recombinant BMP2, suggesting direct regulation of osteoclast differentiation by BMPs. Increase in detectable levels of phosphorylated Smad 1/5/8 was noted in osteoclasts from Twsg1−/− mice compared with WT mice. Furthermore, the enhanced osteoclastogenesis in Twsg1−/− mice was reversed in vitro in a dose‐dependent manner with exposure to Noggin, a BMP antagonist, strongly suggesting that the enhanced osteoclastogenesis in Twsg1 mutants is attributable to increased BMP signaling. Thus, we present a novel and previously uncharacterized role for TWSG1 in inhibiting osteoclastogenesis through regulation of BMP activity.

Abstract:The lateralization of neuronal processing underpinning hearing, speech, language, and music is widely studied, vigorously debated, and still not understood in a satisfactory manner. One set of hypotheses focuses on the temporal structure of perceptual experience and links auditory cortex asymmetries to underlying differences in neural populations with differential temporal sensitivity (e.g., ideas advanced by <a href="#B64">Zatorre et al. (2002)</a> and <a href="#B47">Poeppel (2003)</a>. The Asymmetric Sampling in Time theory (AST) (<a href="#B47">Poeppel, 2003</a>), builds on cytoarchitectonic differences between auditory cortices and predicts that modulation frequencies within the range of, roughly, the syllable rate, are more accurately tracked by the right hemisphere. To date, this conjecture is reasonably well supported, since – while there is some heterogeneity in the reported findings – the predicted asymmetrical entrainment has been observed in various experimental protocols. Here, we show that under specific processing demands, the rightward dominance disappears. We propose an enriched and modified version of the asymmetric sampling hypothesis in the context of speech. Recent work (<a href="#B50">Rimmele et al., 2018b</a>) proposes two different mechanisms to underlie the auditory tracking of the speech envelope: one derived from the intrinsic oscillatory properties of auditory regions; the other induced by top-down signals coming from other non-auditory regions of the brain. We propose that under non-speech listening conditions, the intrinsic auditory mechanism dominates and thus, in line with AST, entrainment is rightward lateralized, as is widely observed. However, (i) depending on individual brain structural/functional differences, and/or (ii) in the context of specific <i>speech listening</i> conditions, the relative weight of the top-down mechanism can increase. In this scenario, the typically observed auditory sampling asymmetry (and its rightward dominance) diminishes or vanishes.

Abstract:Dichotic listening performance of consonant vowel stimuli was studied in 51 adult right- and left-handers in three attention conditions: non-directed and directed to either the right or left ear. In the non-directed condition, a significant right-ear advantage was found in both handedness groups with a stronger asymmetry in right-handers. There are at least three explanations for this ear bias. The classic or structural hypothesis suggests that to the right ear projects more strongly to the language dominant left hemisphere. The callosal relay hypothesis is based on the influence of inhibitory connections via the corpus callosum. The attentional hypothesis suggests that each hemisphere primarily directs attention to contralateral space and because the left hemisphere is dominant for language in both groups, and is aroused by speech stimuli, attention is primarily directed to the right ear. Neither hypothesis can explain why greater than 95% of right-handers have left hemisphere language dominance, but only 70-80% have a right ear bias. Our results demonstrate that in the directed attention conditions both groups increased their lateral biases when directed to either the right or left. The classic or structural hypothesis cannot account for these changes, thereby providing support for the attentional hypothesis. In addition, the right-handed subjects exhibited a greater shift of bias than did the left-handed subjects, when directing their attention leftward. This finding suggests that right-handed people are better able to shift their attention than left-handed people.
Hemispheric specialization of functions are tuned by conduction velocities of neuronal propagation in large-scale brain networks

Abstract:We propose a tuning-by-delay hypothesis to explain the hemispheric specialization of function that has intrigued psychologists, philosophers, neurologists and neuroscientists for decades. In the auditory domain, speech and melody processing are understood to be lateralized in the left and the right hemispheric brain areas, respectively. Thus, analogous to the notion of pleiotropy where one gene can influence two or three unrelated traits, there exists a shared structural connectome encompassing both hemispheres underlying speech and melody processing, which however gets segregated along left vs right hemispheres, respectively. Here, we demonstrate how empirical observations of hemispheric specialization of speech and melody are shaped by the computational time-scales of information integration in cortical networks. First, we demonstrate that context-specific causal outflow of information emerging from primary auditory cortices (PAC) drives the hemispheric specialization of speech and melody processing when human volunteers listened to songs placed within a delayed match to sample task while electroencephalogram (EEG) were recorded. Second, together with participant specific whole-brain connectome model guided by diffusion weighted imaging, we predicted individual specific lateralization indices of inflow in cortical sources - after rigorous source time series reconstruction of EEG spectra. High levels of accuracy in the prediction of laterality indices in the extended large-scale auditory related regions can be achieved after optimizing conduction speeds of information propagation over a neuro-oscillatory network - a novel way to interpret about the neural mechanisms. We demonstrate that parametric modulation of conduction speeds that effectively controls the transmission delays - a key metric for understanding information processing and control of any biological network. Thus, the transmission delay in turn, acts as the switch and triggered by the spectro-temporal complexity of the task context to select the geometry of lateralization.

Abstract:The electrophysiological changes after a single session of neurofeedback training (↑SMR/↓Theta) and its effects on executive attention during a dichotic listening test with forced attentional procedures were measured in a sample of 20 healthy women. A pre–post moment test double blind design, with the inclusion of a group receiving sham neurofeedback, allowed for minimization of alien influences. The interaction of Moment × Group was significant, indicating an enhancement of SMR band after the real neurofeedback. The dichotic listening scores were correlated with the amplitude of Beta band in baseline conditions. The performance on the forced left attentional condition in dichotic listening was significantly improved and correlated positively with the post-training enhancement of the SMR band. The sham neurofeedback group also improved DL scores, so a clear affirmation about the benefits of neurofeedback training over cognitive performance could not be unambiguously established. It is concluded that the protocol showed a good independence and acceptable trainability in modifying the EEG results, but there was limited interpretability regarding cognitive outcomes.

Abstract:Evidence suggests that subcortical structures play a role in high-level cognitive functions such as the allocation of spatial attention. While there is abundant evidence in humans for posterior alpha band oscillations being modulated by spatial attention, little is known about how subcortical regions contribute to these oscillatory modulations, particularly under varying conditions of cognitive challenge. In this study, we combined MEG and structural MRI data to investigate the role of subcortical structures in controlling the allocation of attentional resources by employing a cued spatial attention paradigm with varying levels of perceptual load. We asked whether hemispheric lateralization of volumetric measures of the thalamus and basal ganglia predicted the hemispheric modulation of alpha-band power. Lateral asymmetry of the globus pallidus, caudate nucleus, and thalamus predicted attention-related modulations of posterior alpha oscillations. When the perceptual load was applied to the target and the distractor was salient caudate nucleus asymmetry predicted alpha-band modulations. Globus pallidus was predictive of alpha-band modulations when either the target had a high load, or the distractor was salient, but not both. Finally, the asymmetry of the thalamus predicted alpha band modulation when neither component of the task was perceptually demanding. In addition to delivering new insight into the subcortical circuity controlling alpha oscillations with spatial attention, our finding might also have clinical applications. We provide a framework that could be followed for detecting how structural changes in subcortical regions that are associated with neurological disorders can be reflected in the modulation of oscillatory brain activity.

Abstract:Abstract Successful perception of speech in everyday listening conditions requires effective listening strategies to overcome common acoustic distortions, such as background noise. Convergent evidence from neuroimaging and clinical studies identify activation within the temporal lobes as key to successful speech perception. However, current neurobiological models disagree on whether the left temporal lobe is sufficient for successful speech perception or whether bilateral processing is required. We addressed this issue using TMS to selectively disrupt processing in either the left or right superior temporal gyrus (STG) of healthy participants to test whether the left temporal lobe is sufficient or whether both left and right STG are essential. Participants repeated keywords from sentences presented in background noise in a speech reception threshold task while receiving online repetitive TMS separately to the left STG, right STG, or vertex or while receiving no TMS. Results show an equal drop in performance following application of TMS to either left or right STG during the task. A separate group of participants performed a visual discrimination threshold task to control for the confounding side effects of TMS. Results show no effect of TMS on the control task, supporting the notion that the results of Experiment 1 can be attributed to modulation of cortical functioning in STG rather than to side effects associated with online TMS. These results indicate that successful speech perception in everyday listening conditions requires both left and right STG and thus have ramifications for our understanding of the neural organization of spoken language processing.

Abstract:Continuously prioritizing behaviourally relevant information from the environment for improved stimulus processing is a crucial function of attention. Low-frequency phase-locking of neural activity (entrainment) in primary sensory areas, with respect to attended/ignored features has been suggested to support top-down prioritization. Entrainment of frontoparietal regions has not been widely studied, despite general implication of these in top-down selection of information. In the current MEG study, we studied how entrained oscillatory activity of both sensory and non-sensory brain regions are differentially impacted upon by attentional focus. Participants performed an established intermodal selective attention task, where low-frequency auditory (1.6 Hz) and visual (1.8 Hz) stimuli were presented simultaneously. We instructed participants to either attend to the auditory or to the visual stimuli and to detect targets while ignoring the other stimulus stream. As expected, the strongest entrainment was observed in primary sensory regions for auditory and for visual stimulation, independent of attentional focus. We found greater differences in entrainment between attended and ignored stimulation for the visual modality. Interestingly, auditory temporal regions show small but significant attention-dependent entrainment even for visual stimulation. Extending findings from invasive recordings in non-human primates, we demonstrate an effect of attentional focus on the phase of the entrained oscillations in auditory and visual cortex. In contrast to the effects in sensory areas, attentional focus adjusted the peak frequencies in nonsensory areas. Spatially these areas show a striking overlap with core regions of the dorsal attention network. This suggests that these areas prioritize the attended modality by optimally exploiting the temporal structure of stimulation. Overall, our study complements and extends previous work by showing a differential effect of attentional focus on entrained oscillations in primary sensory areas and core areas of the dorsal attention network.

Abstract:In two experiments investigating hemispheric asymmetries in auditory distraction, the spatial location of to-be-ignored sound was manipulated. Prior studies indicated a left-ear disadvantage for changing-state sequences during short-term serial recall but lacked a direct measure of the changing-state effect. Experiment 1 compared changing-state with steady-state sequences in a visual-verbal serial recall task, confirming that left-ear disruption resulted from the acoustically varying nature of the sound, emphasizing right hemisphere dominance for processing acoustic variation in unattended stimuli. Experiment 2 replicated these findings and explored participants' metacognitive awareness of auditory distractors' disruptive potential. While participants were aware that changing-state sequences were more disruptive than steady-state sequences, they lacked awareness of the left-ear disadvantage. The study suggests individuals have metacognitive awareness of the disruptive impact of changing-state over steady-state sound but not of the accompanying left-ear disadvantage, raising implications for theoretical accounts of auditory distraction.

For this purpose, the brain should recognize reward information from objects under a given circumstances. Recent experimental and theoretical studies have suggested that primates, including human beings, have at least 2 brain processes that calculate the reward value of objects. One is the process coding a specific reward value of a stimulus or response, depending on direct experience (e.g., classical conditioning and TD learning). The other enables us to predict reward based on the internal model of given circumstances without direct experience (e.g., categorization and inference). To clarify the neuronal correlates of the multiple processes on reward prediction, we have conducted 4 experiments: (1) single-unit recording from the caudate and lateral prefrontal cortex of a monkey, while it performed a memory-guided saccade task with asymmetric reward schedule; (2) human fMRI imaging during random-dot discrimination with asymmetric reward condition; (3) single-unit recording from the monkey dopamine neuron in the random-dot discrimination task with asymmetric reward schedule; and (4) simultaneous single-unit recording from the striatum and lateral prefrontal cortex of monkeys performing a reward inference task. Results suggest that the nigro striatal network and the prefrontal network have different functional roles for reward prediction (value generation). The former applies the model-free method (temporal-difference learning), while the latter uses the model-based method (category-based learning).
Attention-driven modulation of auditory cortex activity during selective listening in a multi-speaker setting

Abstract:Real-world listening settings often consist of multiple concurrent sound streams. To limit perceptual interference during selective listening, the auditory system segregates and filters the relevant sensory input. Previous work provided evidence that auditory cortex is critically involved in this process, and selectively gates attended input towards subsequent processing stages. We studied at which level of auditory cortex processing this filtering of attended information occurs using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a naturalistic selective listening task. Forty-five human listeners (of either sex) attended to one of two continuous speech streams, presented either concurrently or in isolation. Functional data were analyzed using an inter-subject analysis to assess stimulus-specific components of ongoing auditory cortex activity. Our results suggest that stimulus-related activity in primary auditory cortex and the adjacent planum temporale are hardly affected by attention, whereas brain responses at higher stages of the auditory cortex processing hierarchy become progressively more selective for the attended input. Consistent with these findings, a complementary analysis of stimulus-driven functional connectivity further demonstrated that information on the to-be-ignored speech stream is shared between primary auditory cortex and the planum temporale, but largely fails to reach higher processing stages. Our findings suggest that the neural processing of ignored speech cannot be effectively suppressed at the level of early cortical processing of acoustic features, but is gradually attenuated once the competing speech streams are fully segregated. Significance statement When listening selectively to one of multiple speech streams, the attended stream is segregated from the acoustic mixture and gated to further information processing, whereas the processing of irrelevant speech must be attenuated to minimize distraction. We here used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the role of auditory cortex for this attentional filtering of auditory input. Our data suggest that stimulus representations in primary auditory cortex and the planum temporale are hardly affected by attention, whereas responses further along the auditory cortex processing hierarchy get more and more selective for the attended input. This suggests that ignored speech cannot be effectively suppressed on the acoustic feature level but is gradually attenuated once the competing speech streams are fully segregated.

Abstract:Selective attention related top-down modulation plays a significant role in separating relevant speech from irrelevant background speech when vocal attributes separating concurrent speakers are small and continuously evolving. Electrophysiological studies have shown that such top-down modulation enhances neural tracking of attended speech. Yet, the specific cortical regions involved remain unclear due to the limited spatial resolution of most electrophysiological techniques. To overcome such limitations, we collected both EEG (high temporal resolution) and fMRI (high spatial resolution), while human participants selectively attended to speakers in audiovisual scenes containing overlapping cocktail party speech. To utilize the advantages of the respective techniques, we analysed neural tracking of speech using the EEG data and performed representational dissimilarity-based EEG-fMRI fusion. We observed that attention enhanced neural tracking and modulated EEG correlates throughout the latencies studied. Further, attention related enhancement of neural tracking fluctuated in predictable temporal profiles. We discuss how such temporal dynamics could arise from a combination of interactions between attention and prediction as well as plastic properties of the auditory cortex. EEG-fMRI fusion revealed attention related iterative feedforward-feedback loops between hierarchically organised nodes of the ventral auditory object related processing stream. Our findings support models where attention facilitates dynamic neural changes in the auditory cortex, ultimately aiding discrimination of relevant sounds from irrelevant ones while conserving neural resources.
