Abstract:Abstract Background WHO has stated that childhood obesity is one of the most serious challenges facing public health in the 21st century, with obese children and adolescents facing a plethora of health complications and increased risk of many chronic diseases. Using a literature review and quantitative analysis of the WHO Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) data, we aimed to better understand obesogenic behaviours in South Asian adolescents in England. Methods We searched electronic databases (Embase, Scopus, Medline, Web of Science) from inception of the database to April 10, 2016, and the references of relevant papers. Grey literature including reports and non-peer reviewed sources were also included. Inclusion criteria were: adolescents aged 11–18 years of age, articles in English language, and studies based in England. Quantitative analysis of HBSC data from 2010 examined variables such as physical activity, dietary behaviours, and mental health indicators. We compared adolescents from Bangladeshi, Indian, and Pakistani groups for each variable, by sex, with white British adolescents. Pearsonu0027s χ 2 test was carried out to compare all groups against each other. Ethics approval was given by the University of Hertfordshire Ethics committee for Health and Human Sciences (HSK/SF/UH/00007). Ethical sensitivity was also enhanced through the work of reference groups with young people, which informed the conduct of the study within schools. Findings The HSBC 2010 sample consisted of 51 Bangladeshi, 96 Indian, 111 Pakistani, and 3476 white British adolescents. Two (8·7%) of 23 Bangladeshi girls undertook 5 or more daysu0027 physical activity, compared with 744 (44·1%) of 1688 white British girls, 13 (27·7%) of 47 Indian girls, and 16 (33·3%) of 48 Pakistani girls. South Asian adolescents had significantly worse outcomes in terms of number of times physical activity was undertaken per week (p=0·023) or any physical activity in the previous 7 days (p=0·002). 11 (20·0%) of 55 Pakistani girls never ate vegetables or ate them less than once a week, compared with 94 (5·3%) of 1771 white British girls (consumption of vegetables, p Interpretation Key findings from the literature review and HBSC 2010 data were that South Asian adolescents have lower physical activity levels compared with their white peers, have worse dietary behaviours, and have barriers to engaging in healthier lifestyles, compared with their white British counterparts. These negative lifestyle behaviours will need careful consideration of upstream policy and local health service provision and interventions in South Asian adolescents in England. Taking this evidence into action will be crucial to address the obesity epidemic and reduce existing health inequalities. Funding None.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES This paper explores the practice of patient-centred care (PCC) within dentistry. The aim of this research was to explore the barriers and opportunities dentists face in practicing PCC. METHODS The results of N = 20 thematically analysed, in-depth semi-structured qualitative interviews with a range of dentists working across clinical and teaching positions within a large UK dental school are presented. RESULTS PCC was generally considered a positive, to be embraced concept which dentists believe they practice daily in the absence of any formal training. PCC presented dentists with opportunities to deliver treatment to highly compliant patients. The main barriers revolved around patients (e.g. disengaged or overly inquisitive) and practice factors (e.g. time and funding). CONCLUSIONS PCC is a concept that is generally seen as important in the dental surgery, presenting dentists with opportunities for compliance-enhanced practice. Significant work is needed if dentists are going to be supported in overcoming self-identified barriers to their delivery of PCC as per UK General Dental Council guidelines.

Abstract:Background and AimsThe pregnancy weight is usually retained in the form of abdominal fat during the postpartum period. The willingness to lose weight is influenced by knowledge, attitude, beliefs and practices. This study aims to comprehend the awareness, beliefs and perspectives of postpartum women regarding their perceived factors, barriers and facilitators associated with post-pregnancy weight status.MethodsOverweight and obese postpartum women aged between 20 and 40 years and had delivered an infant in the last 2 years were recruited via convenience and purposive sampling techniques. The final sample comprised 27 participants with a mean age of 29.96 ± 4.50 years. Four focus group discussions and eight in-depth interviews carried out were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Codes, sub-themes and themes were generated using Atlas.ti 9 software.ResultsMajor themes identified were perceived factors causing postpartum weight retention/weight gain including social and cultural beliefs related to diet and exercise specifically associated with this period, perceived motivators and deterrents of weight loss including eagerness to lose weight and perceived facilitators and barriers to weight loss including intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as time, energy, evidence-based knowledge about diet and physical activity, family support and obligation to family's advice.ConclusionThe unique challenges and barriers associated with postpartum weight loss efforts should be taken into consideration by healthcare professionals and public health policy-makers to design strategies specific to postpartum women.
Gender-specific determinants of overweight and obesity among older adults in India: evidence from a cross-sectional survey, 2017-18

Abstract:Background: A major societal trend of the twenty-first century is the rapidly ageing population as a consequence of the decline in fertility and increase in life expectancy. Along with the rise in ageing population, the burden of obesity and related non-communicable diseases is also equally rising. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential gender-specific determinants of overweight and obesity among older adults in India. Subjects and methods: The present study used data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) wave 1 (2017-18). A total sample of 25,952 older adults (≥ 60 years) was selected for the study. Descriptive statistics, bivariate chi-square test, and logistic regression estimation were applied to accomplish the study objectives. Body mass index (BMI) has been classified in this study according to the WHO criteria. Results: The prevalence of overweight was higher among women (18.15% in rural areas and 46.62% in urban areas) compared to men (12.9% in rural areas and 30.61% in urban areas). Similarly, obesity was higher among women than men who were residing in urban areas (17.07% vs. 5.37%), had secondary or above education (32.38% vs. 6.1%) belonged to richest strata (16.37% vs. 4.50%), or had mobility impairment (9.2% vs. 2.8%). Despite adjustment for several confounders, women were more likely to be overweight (OR: 2.18; CI: 1.86, 2.55) and obese (OR: 3.79; CI: 2.86, 5.03) than men. However, among both the elderly men and women, those who were highly educated were 2.29 times (OR: 2.29; CI: 1.80, 4.11) and 2.71 times (OR: 2.71; CI: 1.78, 4.11), respectively more likely to be overweight than their illiterate counterparts. Older adults living in urban areas were more likely to suffer from obesity compared to rural men (OR: 1.47; CI: 1.07, 2.02) and women (OR: 2.58; CI: 1.85, 3.60). Both men and women, who were highly educated were 2.64 times (OR: 2.64; CI: 1.71, 4.09) and 2.94 times (OR: 2.94; CI: 1.40, 6.20), respectively, more likely to be obese than their illiterate counterparts. Older men and women who were richest (OR: 1.60; CI: 1.19, 2.14 & OR: 2.12; CI: 1.63,2.76), or had mobility impairment (OR: 1.33; CI: 1.09,1.61 & OR: 1.72; CI: 1.42,2.08) were more likely to be overweight than their counterparts who were poorest or did not have any mobility limitation, respectively. Conclusions: This study found increased vulnerability of overweight and obesity among older women than men irrespective of their socioeconomic, demographic, and health status. The present study suggests that introducing preventative measures such as campaigns to encourage physical activity, and community awareness may help reduce the high burden of overweight and obesity. Finally, the findings are important for better functioning of any public health programme and suitable intervention techniques to maintain a healthy body in order to lower the prevalence and risk factors of non-communicable diseases in later life.
Nutrition Transition and Obesity Among Teenagers and Young Adults in South Asia

Abstract:Introduction: Obesity among teenagers/adolescents and young adults is associated with significant adverse short and longer-term effects on health. To date, no narrative reviews have evaluated nutrition transition and its contribution to the obesity epidemic among adolescents and young adults in the South Asian (SA) region. Method: Data were retrieved by a four-stage systematic search process. A search of the online Pub- Med/Medline, SciVerse Scopus and Web of Science databases was performed. The age groups were defined as follows; teenage:13-19 years, adolescence:10-18 years and young adult:19-24 years. Results: Among teenagers/adolescents, the prevalence of overweight ranged from 11.0% (Sri Lanka) to 19.0% (India), while obesity ranged from 2.4% (Sri Lanka) to 11.0% (Pakistan). In young adults, prevalence of overweight ranged between 7.9% (Nepal) to 15.0% (Pakistan), while obesity showed a much wider variation (0.005%[Nepal] - 22.8%[India]). Nutritional risk factors associated with overweight/ obesity among SAs of this age group included reduced fruit and vegetable consumption, a total vegetarian diet, consumption of fast food and soft drinks, and skipping breakfast. Other contributing factors identified were: adding extra salt to meals, eating meals outside of the home, frequently visiting restaurants and eating while watching television. Daily milk/yoghurt consumption and a family supper have shown a protective effect against overweight/obesity. Conclusion: Overweight and obesity are common amongst teenagers/adolescents and young adults of the SA region. Several food types and habits were identified as being associated with overweight/ obesity in this population. Identifying common protective and contributory factors is very important for the development of a shared regional preventive strategy.
A comparative analysis of cytokine production and tolerance induction by bacterial lipopeptides, lipopolysaccharides and Staphyloccocus aureus in human monocytes

Abstract:Monocytes (MO) and macrophages (MAC) are important producers of cytokines involved in the pathophysiology of bacterial sepsis. Most studies concentrate on the effects of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) regarding the induction of cytokine gene expression and secretion in MO/MAC. Here we report that besides LPS, the synthetic lipoprotein analogue lipopeptide N‐palmitoyl‐S‐(2,3‐bis(palmitoyl)‐(2RS)‐propyl)‐(R)‐cysteinyl‐alanyl‐glycine (Pam3‐Cys‐Ala‐Gly), another component of the outer membrane of Gram‐negative bacteria, as well as heat‐killed Staphyloccocus aureus (S. aureus/SAC) are potent stimuli for cytokines in human MO. For all three investigated stimuli we found an individual pattern of cytokine induction: LPS was most potent in inducing interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) synthesis, whereas for tumour necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α) secretion SAC was the best stimulus. Comparable amounts of IL‐8 were induced by either LPS or Pam3‐Cys‐Ala‐Gly, with SAC being less effective even at higher concentrations. The addition of serum led to an increase in LPS‐, SAC‐ and Pam3‐Cys‐Ala‐Gly‐stimulated TNF‐α secretion, indicating that the presence of serum is critical not just for LPS stimulation. Furthermore, as is known for LPS, Pam3‐Cys‐Ala‐Gly and SAC rendered MO refractory to a second bacterial stimulus. Pam3‐Cys‐Ala‐Gly and SAC induced tolerance for itself, but LPS could partially overcome this effect. As the CD14 molecule is discussed as a common receptor for different bacterial components, we investigated whether the TNF‐α response of MO could be blocked by anti‐CD14 antibodies. MY4, a CD14 antibody, selectively blocked the TNF‐α secretion induced by LPS but not by Pam3‐Cys‐Ala‐Gly or SAC. In summary, we conclude that besides LPS, lipopeptide Pam3‐Cys‐Ala‐Gly and SAC are potent stimuli for human MO, while the mechanisms of activation seem to be partially different from LPS.
Study of Overweight and Obesity and Associated Factors among Undergraduate Medical Students in North India

Abstract:Background Obesity negatively affects one's health or well-being. Due to rising prevalence of obesity and its adverse health effects it is being recognized as a serious public health concern. Medical students are very prone to obesity because of so much stress. Also junk food consumption is very common in medical student which is an important risk factor for obesity. Aims and objectives This study was undertaken to find out the prevalence of overweight and obesity its association with different risk factors in undergraduate medical students in a medical college of north India. Material and method The cross-sectional study was conducted on 128 undergraduate medical students. A detailed history was taken. Anthropometric measurements including weight, height, body mass index, waist-hip ratio and waist-height ratio were taken according to WHO criteria. Result & Conclusion The study showed high prevalence of overweight (30.2%) and obesity (3.9%). Obesity was significantly associated with non-vegetarian diet (p<0.01). Prevalence of overweight and obesity was highest in students with blood group B (12.4%) and least in blood group AB (0%). There was no significant association of obesity with junk food, family history and sleep duration (p >0.05). The importance of healthy eating habits and healthy life style needs to be emphasized. We created awareness for healthy living among medical students during the study.

Overweight/Obesity Prevalence among Under-Five Children and Risk Factors in India: A Cross-Sectional Study Using the National Family Health Survey (2015–2016)

Abstract:The occurrence of overweight and obesity has increased in recent years in India. In this study, we investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors of overweight/obesity among children aged 0-59 months in India. Using data from the 2015-2016 National Family Health Survey-4 (NFHS-4), the research sample included 176,255 children aged 0 to 59 months. Bivariate and multivariate techniques were used to analyze children's risk factors for overweight/obesity. We identified that the prevalence of overweight/obesity among children aged 0-59 was 2.6% in India. The study findings reveal that factors such as child sex, age, birth weight, birth rank, maternal education, number of children, age at marriage, mother's BMI, media exposure, social group, and dietary diversity score were most significantly correlated with childhood overweight and obesity in India. Furthermore, we found that male children (ARR: 1.08) aged between 0 and 11 months (ARR: 3.77) with low birth rank (ARR: 1.24), obese (ARR: 1.81) children whose mothers married after the age of 18 (ARR: 1.15), children who belong to a scheduled tribe family (ARR: 1.46), and children who consumed 7-9 food items (ARR: 1.22) were at highest risk of being overweight and obese. However, breastfeeding (ARR: 0.85) and Muslim families (ARR: 0.87) appeared to be protective factors with respect to childhood overweight and obesity in India. Pertinent public health programs, clinical follow-up, and awareness about sedentary lifestyles can help to reduce overweight/obesity risks in children.
Spatial clustering of overweight/obesity among women in India: Insights from the latest National Family Health Survey

Abstract:Background: Overweight/obesity has become global health concern with increasing prevalence. This study examined district-level disparities and spatial clustering of overweight/obesity among women of reproductive age (WRA) in India using the latest National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-2021) data. Method: Information of 623,656 women aged 15 to 49 from the NFHS-5 (2019-2021) were analysed in this study. The outcome variable was BMI as classified by the world health organisation (WHO). Utilising Global Moran's I, Anselin's Local Moran's I, and spatial regression models spatial clustering and associated factors were analysed. Result: The study found that 24% (95% CI: 23.8-24.3) of WRA in India were overweight/obese in 2019-21. The prevalence was greatest in Punjab (41%) and lowest in Meghalaya (11%). Additionally, the Global Moran's I value for the outcome variable was 0.73, indicating a positive spatial autocorrelation in the overweight/obesity. Districts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, and Delhi were hotspots of overweight/obesity. Several factors of overweight/obesity among WRA were identified, including place of residence (β: 0.034, p: 0.011), parity (β: 0.322, p: 0.002), social group (β: -0.031, p: 0.016), religion (β: -0.044, p: <0.001), household wealth status (β: 0.184, p: <0.001), mass-media exposure (β: 0.056, p: 0.031), and diabetes (β: 0.680, p: <0.001). Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of targeted interventions and region-specific strategies, while also stressing the need to address associated factors to develop effective public health initiatives aimed at reducing overweight/obesity prevalence among WRA in India.

Abstract:Background: Adolescent overweight and obesity (AOO) is a global public health problem and risk for noncommunicable diseases. Understanding context-specific risks is crucial for interventions. Objective: Determine the prevalence of AOO in the Indonesian National Health Survey (INHS) 2013, assess the 5-year trend from 2013 to 2018, and identify risks. Methods: We selected adolescents aged 10 to 19 years (n = 174 290) from the INHS 2013 and used hierarchical logistic regression to identify gender-specific risks for those aged 15 to 19 years (n = 77 534). Change in AOO was assessed by comparison to INHS 2018 reports. Results: The national AOO prevalence increased over 5 years by 48% in young adolescents (13-15 years) and 85% in older ones (16-18 years). High prevalence areas included the urban location of Jakarta (20.9%) and the remote rural region of Papua (19.4%). Overall, AOO risks were being sedentary, male, lower education, married, younger adolescent, and school enrollment, with urban residence and higher wealth being persistent risks for all analyses. Data for depressive symptoms were available for older adolescents whose additional risks were being sedentary, depressive symptoms, and high-fat diet. Male risks were being sedentary and lower education, and female risks were being married, depressive symptoms, high-fat intake, and lower education. Higher intake of fruits and vegetables and fewer sweets did not protect against AOO if a high-fat diet was consumed. Conclusions: Adolescent overweight and obesity in Indonesia is rapidly increasing, especially in older adolescents and males, and with gender-specific risks. Customized multisectoral interventions to identify strategies for lifestyle change are urgently needed.

Abstract:Background: Overweight and obesity are the fifth greatest risk of global deaths. Over 1.9 billion persons aged 18 and older were overweight in 2016. Over 650 million of these men and women were obese. Instead of changes in dietary intake or other causes, it has been suggested that the increase in body weight in industrialized nations is mostly the result of decreased levels of physical activity.Aim and Objectives: To assess the eating behaviour/pattern and type of physical activity/duration of physicalactivity among college students in Indore city, and to determine correlation of eating behaviour & physical activity with overweight /obesity.Materials and Methods: A cross–sectional study conducted between January to June 2023 among 200 randomly selected students of age 17 to 25 years of various colleges of Central India in Indore district who gave consent, using a pre-designed, semi-structured, pre-tested questionnaire. Data entered in Microsoft excel was analysed using SPSS software25.0 (trial version).Results: 46% had Body Mass Index (BMI) in normal range and 42.5% were overweight. 60% male participantshad their BMI in normal range and 30.4% were overweight whereas 58.8% female participants were overweight.Majority (75.3%) of female participants had low Metabolic Equivalent of Task(MET) score whereas only 48.7% of male participants had low MET score. Both the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) Scores and International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ) Scores were found to be statistically significant (p-value <0.05) among BMI categories.100% of obese participants, 91.8% of overweight participants and 32.6% of participants with BMI in normal range had low MET score, found to be statistically significant (p-value<0.001). Conclusion: TFEQ and MET scores were found to be statistically significant (p-value<0.001) among BMI categories suggesting that, both eating behaviour and physical activity were associated with overweight and obesity.

Abstract:Introduction Obesity is a complex, multifactorial chronic disease involving genetic, physiological, metabolic, behavioural, psychological and environmental components. The global epidemic of overweight and obesity—“globesity”—is rapidly becoming a major public health problem. It has reached epidemic proportion in India in the 21st century. Methods The present population based study has been conducted in rural and urban areas of Ludhiana district, Punjab State (India). The study included 1615 Punjabi adults comprising 875 from rural and 740 from urban area. Demographic variables (age, sex, SES, lifestyle) and anthropometric parameters—height, weight, waist circumference and hip circumference were recorded. Biochemical analysis viz. cholesterol, Na and K were also done. Results Out of 1615 subjects, 44% were males and 56% were females. Half of the subjects were in the age group of 20–40 years. Overall prevalence of overweight and obesity has been found be 18.8% and 46.6%, respectively. Prevalence of obesity is slightly higher in rural subjects than the urban. The percentage of obese subjects is 54%, 55.35% and 56.44% in the age groups of ≤30 years, 31–40 years and 41–50 years, respectively. Prevalence of obesity has been computed in relation to sex, SES and lifestyle. Serum cholesterol level was significantly (p=0.007) higher among obese (192.24±41.39) than non obese (179.27±39.57) subjects. No significant difference of Na and K was observed between obese and non obese subjects. Conclusion The prevalence of obesity is alarmingly high in adult population of Punjab.

Abstract:IntroductionAlthough the prevalence of underweight is declining among Indian women, the prevalence of overweight/obesity is increasing. This study examined the prevalence and factors associated with underweight and overweight/obesity among reproductive-aged (i.e., 15–49 years) women in India.MethodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2015–16 National Family Health Survey. The Asian and World Health Organization (WHO) recommended cutoffs for body mass index (BMI) were used to categorize body weight. The Asian and WHO BMI cutoffs for combined overweight/obesity were ≥ 23 and ≥ 25 kg/m2, respectively. Both recommendations had the same cutoff for underweight, < 18.5 kg/m2. After prevalence estimation, logistic regression was applied to investigate associated factors.ResultsAmong 647,168 women, the median age and BMI was 30 years and 21.0 kg/m2, respectively. Based on the Asian cutoffs, the overall prevalence of underweight was 22.9%, overweight was 22.6%, and obesity was 10.7%, compared to 15.5% overweight and 5.1% obesity as per WHO cutoffs. The prevalence and odds of underweight were higher among young, nulliparous, contraceptive non-user, never-married, Hindu, backward castes, less educated, less wealthy, and rural women. According to both cutoffs, women who were older, ever-pregnant, ever-married, Muslims, castes other than backwards, highly educated, wealthy, and living in urban regions had higher prevalence and odds of overweight/obesity.ConclusionThe prevalence of both non-normal weight categories (i.e., underweight and overweight/obesity) was high. A large proportion of women are possibly at higher risks of cardiovascular and reproductive adverse events due to these double nutrition burdens. Implementing large-scale interventions based on these results is essential to address these issues.

Abstract:The premise for effective prevention and treatment of obesity is the availability of accurate prevalence figures. However, the prevalence of pediatric obesity and overweight in South Asian countries has seldom been analyzed. This article provides a comprehensive review and meta-analysis of studies on overweight and obesity to provide a more precise prevalence estimate. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022320625). PubMed and Embase databases were comprehensively searched from inception till September 2023. The random-effects model was utilized to derive the pooled prevalence of obesity and overweight. Subgroup meta-analysis was used to assess variations in prevalence estimates across subgroups. A meta-regression analysis was also performed to assess the trend of overweight and obesity over the years. 152 studies were included with 489,525 participants. The pooled prevalence was 12.4 (95% CI 11.1–13.6) for overweight, 6.6% (95% CI 5.6–7.8) for obesity, and 19.3% (95% CI 17.1–21.7) for obesity and overweight. In subgroup analysis, Bangladesh reported a higher prevalence for both obesity (8.9%; 95% CI 4.9–13.9) and overweight (13.6%; 95% CI 9.2–18.8). Meta-regression analysis found a significant association between obesity prevalence and the publication year (β = 0.004; p = 0.03; R 2 = 2.74%). The results of this study indicate a relatively higher prevalence of childhood obesity in South Asia, emphasizing the necessity for large-scale awareness efforts and context-specific preventative methods.

Abstract:Aim and Background: The global upsurge of the obesity epidemic has led to an urgent need for measurement tools for obesity research and practice. Patient-oriented tools are important for determining the effectiveness of management and treatment of obesity. The current study objective was to evaluate the clinical validity of an obesity risk assessment tool in a large sample of patients suffering from obesity in India. Methods: This study was conducted between August 2021-August 2022 in which a user-friendly, patient-oriented obesity risk assessment questionnaire was digitally administered to patients suffering from obesity. Data was analysed using a multivariate ordered logistic regression model (OLM), and discriminant analysis was performed to validate the model’s predictability. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 1046 patients includes 639 (61.09%) female and 407 (38.91%) male participants. The mean age of patients was 41.29±12.4 years (age range: 15–97 years), and the mean BMI was 46.75±19.41 kg/m2 . The ordered regression model predicted bariatric surgery for 66.63% of patients, diet and exercise for 6.9%, and pharmacotherapy for 4.6% of patients. Overall, our findings suggest that the model had an accuracy of 78%, providing evidence for the validity of the tool and suggesting next action steps to be taken by patient. Conclusion: The obesity risk assessment tool has potential as a patient-oriented tool because of its ease of use for the assessment and providing guidance to seek next steps for appropriate management of obesity. It can be applied to both sexes at all ages and may provide the simplest and most valid risk assessment tool to enable patients to move from awareness to action.

Females in India are more prone to being overweight and obese than their male counterparts, more specifically in affluent families than the poor ones. Abstract:Objectives: The Awareness, Care and Treatment In Obesity maNagement (ACTION) Teens study explored attitudes, behaviours, perceptions and barriers regarding effective obesity care among adolescents living with obesity (ALwO), caregivers and healthcare professionals (HCPs). Design: Cross-sectional online survey study. Setting: Study across 10 countries; here, we report data from UK respondents. Participants: Overall, 416 ALwO (aged 12 to <18 years; body mass index ≥95th percentile for age and sex (WHO charts)), 498 caregivers and 250 HCPs in the UK completed the survey (August-December 2021). Primary and secondary outcome measures: Survey questions addressed key aspects of obesity management for ALwO. Results: Overall, 46% of ALwO perceived their weight as normal or below normal and 86% believed their health was at least good; 56% and 93% of caregivers responded similarly for their ALwO. Despite this, most ALwO (57%) had attempted to lose weight in the past year and 34% felt highly motivated to lose weight. YouTube and social media were most often used by ALwO for information about weight management (41% and 39%); few ALwO and caregivers sought information from a doctor (13% and 22%). Among ALwO who had discussed weight with an HCP (n=122), 49% trusted their weight-management advice. Only 10% of ALwO and 8% of caregivers were told by a doctor that they/their child had obesity. For HCPs, obesity-related comorbidities were the most common reason for initiating weight conversations with ALwO (73%), while short appointment times were the most common barrier (46%). Overall, 30% of ALwO and 11% of caregivers did not feel comfortable bringing up weight with an HCP. Conclusions: Improved education and communication are needed among ALwO, caregivers and HCPs in the UK to help improve awareness of obesity, its aetiology and its impact on health, and to support HCPs to proactively initiate weight-related conversations and build trust with ALwO and caregivers. District-level heterogeneity in overweight or obesity among women of reproductive age: A geo-spatial analysis in India

Abstract:Background Globally by 2030, 38% of the world’s population would be overweight, and another 20% would be obese. This has led to rising concerns regarding how swiftly and substantially the world is moving towards this epidemic of "globesity". India too is facing an increased burden of overweight and obese population. The changing dietary patterns are significantly associated with the increasing prevalence of overweight/obesity and related complications, especially among women. Hence, the present study aims to observe the spatial patterns of overweight or obesity among women in reproductive age group in India and factors associated with it. Methods The study analyzed data from a cross-sectional nationwide household survey, i.e. National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), 2015–16. The primary outcome variable of this study was overweight/obesity among reproductive-age women, which was measured through the body mass index (BMI) of the women. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data. Additionally, for spatial analysis in terms of overweight/obesity among women in India, univariate and bivariate Moran’s I index measurements were used along with the usage of spatial regression models. Results The value of spatial-autocorrelation for overweight or obese was 0.64, which depicts the moderately high prevalence of the overweight/obesity coverage over districts of India. The overall prevalence overweight/obesity among women in India is around 25% and higher proportion of women from urban areas (37.8%), and non-poor (33.4%) economic group reported to be overweight or obese. From spatial lag model, the lag coefficient was found to be 0.28, implying that a change in the prevalence of overweight/obesity among women in a certain district may statistically lag the prevalence of overweight/obesity by 28% in the neighbouring districts. There were significantly high clustering of overweight/obese women and non-poor wealth quintiles in 132 districts, mainly from states of Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, there was high-high clustering of overweight/obese women and those who ever had caesarean in 82 districts, mostly from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Conclusion The spatial patterns on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in India show that the women belonging to the southern states’ districts are more overweight or obese in comparison to other states. The determinants like older age, higher education, urban residence, higher economic status are the key factors contributing to the prevalence of overweight or obesity among women in the reproductive age group. The study concludes and recommends an urgent need of interventions catering to urban women belonging to higher socio-economic status, to reduce the risks of health consequences due to overweight and obesity.

Abstract:Summary Background Childhood obesity (5–9 years) in India is likely to contribute 11% to the global burden by 2030. Methods Data from India's Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS, 2016–2018) was used to assess the prevalence and key associated factors of overweight and obesity. Multivariable logistic regression models were applied to identify potential determinants associated with being overweight and obese. Results Overweight prevalence (including obesity) varied from 1.6% (0–4 years) to 4.8% (10–19 years). The majority of states reported a higher proportion of adolescents overweight and obese, than younger age group 5–9 years. A significantly higher prevalence of children and adolescents with obesity was reported in higher wealth quintiles and residents of urban areas. The prevalence of overweight and obesity and associated demographic and health factors in India included: the presence of NCD risk factor (adolescents: 1.68, 95% CI [1.31–2.14]), micronutrient deficiency (5–9 years children: 1.72, 95% CI [1.30–2.28]), mother's education (5–9 years children: 4.84, 95% CI [2.92–8.03]; adolescents: 2.17, 95% CI [1.42–3.32]), wealth (adolescents: 1.92, 95% CI [1.16–3.19]), place of residence (5–9 years children: 1.68, 95% CI [1.39–2.03]; adolescents: 1.39, 95% CI [1.16–1.66]), child age (5–9 years children: 1.64, 95% CI [1.40–1.93], and screen‐time (adolescents: 1.63, 95% CI [1.22–2.19]. Conclusion The findings set out policy and research recommendations to pave the path for curtailing the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity and achieving the World Health Assembly's Global Nutrition target of 'no increase in childhood overweight (Target 4) by 2025'.

Abstract:Purpose To determine the contribution of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) to overall macronutrient intake and their association with anthropometric measurements, and to explore the perceptions regarding UPF consumption among young adults in Puducherry, India. Methods This study included 630 participants from three colleges selected using multistage cluster sampling. Following the demonstration of portion estimation, dietary data from previous day were collected using a Google Form-based tool. The participant's anthropometric measures were taken. Food items were classified into NOVA groups and intake analysis was performed using DietSoft software. The participants with low and high consumption were identified and focus group discussions were conducted in each group using criterion sampling. Results Of all the participants, 178 (28.3%) were overweight or obese. UPF contributed 9.3% of total energy intake and 2.8% protein, 9.9% fat, and 9.9% carbohydrates. The most consumed UPFs were biscuits, wafers (25%), and potato chips(16.2%). No significant association was found between anthropometric measures and UPF consumption. Qualitative findings revealed four major themes, further explained using the socio-ecological framework. Conclusion UPF consumption in the region was lower than that reported in other global and Indian studies. While our study did not find a significant association between UPF consumption and anthropometric measures, there is a concerning shift from traditional diets to increased UPF reliance, driven by convenience and commercial factors. Addressing this is crucial for healthier choices and combating non-communicable diseases during this pivotal life stage.
