Abstract:In-situ detection of analytes on curved surfaces is a persistent and great challenge in the application of SERS technique. A hydrogel-based flexible SERS substrate demonstrates a unique charm for providing close contact to the real-sample surface but limited by its weak enhancement capability in the quantitative analysis. Herein, we report a reinforced hydrogel by reduction of plasmonic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on a PNIPAM membrane with the aid of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surfactant. The modification of AgNPs on PNIPAM endows the AgNPs/PNIPAM composite hydrogel with good mechanical properties and reinforced swelling property. Moreover, the AgNPs/PNIPAM hydrogel-based SERS sensor exhibits an enhanced SERS sensitivity as well as improved signal uniformity (RSD <10 %), and the detection concentration for pesticide molecules can be down to 10 -9 M. Due to the fingerprint feature of SERS, multicomponent detection of pesticide mixtures was readily realized. In addition, the flexible AgNPs/PNIPAM hydrogel was successfully applied to the curved apple surface for SERS detection. Notably, it is capable of achieving qualitative and quantitative analyses of different pesticides, which has lower analytical concentrations than European Union (EU) standards, indicating the potential applications in rapid in-situ pesticide analysis.

Research on a three-dimensional SERS substrate based on a CNTs/Ag@Au/SiO2 composite for detection of fipronil and imidacloprid pesticides

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has a unique fingerprint spectrum, which allows for rapid, highly sensitive, and non-destructive detection without the need for sample pretreatment. However, SERS substrates have disadvantages such as short storage time and poor reproducibility. In this study, carbon nanotubes, gold, and silver were combined to take advantage of their inherent structural and characteristic properties that enhance the Raman effect. A new type of SERS composite substrate, CNTs/Ag@Au/SiO2, was prepared using a hydrothermal method and seed growth method. The substrate was characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the average distance between the core-shell nanoparticles was found to be 3.1 nm, which is more suitable than other gold-silver combined core-shell structures and significantly improves the SERS enhancement factor. The substrate demonstrated high sensitivity even at low concentrations of probe molecules and good uniformity at five randomly selected locations. After storage for 45 days, the substrate still exhibited good stability. In most gold-silver combined core-shell structures, the detection limit for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is 10-9 mol L-1, while in this substrate, the detection limit for R6G is 10-11 mol L-1. Furthermore, the contribution of the substrate's enhancement was deeply investigated using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), which revealed that the substrate's hotspots were present in two forms: the "hotspots generated between Ag@Au nanoparticles" and the "hotspots generated between Ag@Au nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes". These two forms of hotspots also demonstrated that the performance brought about by the preparation of the substrate structure was reliable. The simulation results were compared with the experimental results, and the analysis showed that the real environment would have an impact on the substrate's structure during the actual substrate preparation process. Finally, the substrate was used for detecting the pesticide fipronil, and the results showed clear peaks even at a concentration of 0.1 mg L-1. The results indicated that the Raman intensity was linearly exponential with the fipronil solution concentration, with a determination coefficient of R2 = 0.991. This study provides a new SERS substrate for pesticide residue detection and further explores the improvement of pesticide detection limits.

Abstract:Flexible, transparent and mechanically robust surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrates is currently the most attractive research focus in the field of Raman detection, and also a powerful analysis and identification technique in the biological research. Herein, we introduced a low-cost and large-scale method to fabricate flexible and transparent AgNPs/WPU plasmonic metafilm with monolayer-island phase nanostructures based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and waterborne polyurethane emulsion (WPU) film. The obtained AgNPs/WPU plasmonic metafilm demonstrated excellent SERS sensitivity, signal uniformity and reproducibility, and the SERS substrates could still maintain excellent stability even after being bent or stretched over 100 cycles. The detection concentration was as low as 10–9 M with 4-Mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as probe molecule, and the enhancement factor was high to 2.2 × 107. More importantly, the flexibility and adhesivity of AgNPs/WPU plasmonic metafilm could be directly conformal coverage on the apple surface for in situ detection of thiram residue, and the detection limit was as low as 9.0165 ng cm−2. This versatile AgNPs/WPU plasmonic metalfilm would be a promising SERS substrate for the detection of pesticide residue in chemical and biological applications.

Abstract:Rapid and effective detection of pesticide residues from complex surfaces of fruits and vegetables has important significance. Herein, we report a novel three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous functional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, which is fabricated by successive two-step hydrothermal synthesis strategy of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and cobalt oxide nanowires (Co3O4 NWs) on the 3D copper foam framework as Cu@Co3O4@Ag-H. The strategy offers a new avenue for localized plasmonic materials distribution and construction, which exhibits better morphology regulation ability and SERS activity (or hotspots engineering) than physical spurring obtained Cu@Co3O4@Ag-S. The developed Cu@Co3O4@Ag-H possesses large surface area and rich hotspots, which contributes to the excellent SERS performance, including homogeneity (RSD of 7.8%), sensitivity (enhancement factor, EF of 2.24 × 108) and stability. The Cu@Co3O4@Ag-H not only provides plenty of Electromagnetic enhancement (EM) hotspots but also the trace detection capability for droplet rapid sensing within 2 s. Cu@Co3O4@Ag-H substrate is further developed as an effective SERS sensing platform for pesticide residues detection on the surfaces of fruits and vegetables with excellent LOD of 0.1 ppm, which is lower than the most similar reported works. This work offers new potential for bioassay, disease POCT diagnosis, national security, wearable flexible devices, energy storage and other related fields.

Abstract:Chlorpyrifos is one of the most widely used organophosphate insecticides in agricultural production. Nevertheless, the residues of chlorpyrifos in agricultural by-product seriously threaten human health. Thus, the ultrasensitive detection of chlorpyrifos residues in agri-food products is of great demand. Herein, an AuNP/HNT-assembled disposable paper SERS substrate was prepared by an electrostatic self-assembly method to detect chlorpyrifos residues. The AuNP/HNT paper substrate exhibited high SERS activity, good reproducibility, and long-term stability, which was successfully used for quantitative detection of chlorpyrifos; the detection limit reached 7.9 × 10−9 M. For spiked apple samples the calculated recovery was 87.9% with a RSD value of 6.1%. The excellent detection ability of AuNP/HNT paper-based SERS substrate indicated that it will play an important role in pesticide detection in the future.

Abstract:Recently, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based on noble metal nanomaterials has attracted increasing attention due to its unique characters of the high sensitivity and the capability of chemical fingerprints recognition. The traditional SERS substrates are generally designed as a planar device. Here, we fabricated a nonplanar SERS substrate using a silver nanoparticles coated glass bead to achieve quantitative SERS measurements. Moreover, the developed substrate could be dipped into sample solution, which provided high surface area for detection and efficient transport of analyte to its surface. Unlike traditional SERS detection process of "drop-dry-measure", the proposed sensing process of "dip-dry-measure" avoided the coffee-ring, thus led to the high uniformity of SERS signal. The utility of the designed SERS substrate was demonstrated by detecting chlorpyrifos and imidacloprid in the extract solution from apple with the limits of detection of 10 ng/mL and 50 ng/mL, respectively. The proposed non-planar SERS substrate is a promising candidate for practical application in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Compared to rigid surface-enhanced Raman scatting (SERS) substrates, flexible SERS substrates offer significant advantages for the detection of pesticide residues on vegetable and fruit surfaces, primarily due to their convenient sampling process and shorter detection times. However, for paper-based SERS substrates, the AuNPs are easy to form ineffective dispersion in the three-dimensional network structure of paper, resulting in unsatisfactory SERS enhancement. To address this challenge and achieve high-performance flexible SERS substrates, a novel sandwich structure is proposed. Specifically, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are aggregated on expanded graphite (EG) through a chemical enhancement process facilitated by LiCl. EG is found to improve the adsorption capacity of targeted molecules while preventing signal attenuation caused by filter papers. By employing an aggregating agent at specific concentrations, it is possible to significantly increase the amounts of hot spots to provide a more pronounced enhancement effect. Furthermore, the developed flexible SERS substrates are applied to qualitatively and quantitatively detect pesticide residues, including Thiram, Nitrofural and Dinotefuran. The flexible SERS substrates demonstrate high accuracy and robustness, making them easily storable and suitable for practical applications.

Abstract:To effectively extract target analytes from complex sample surfaces is of great significance for the practical application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. A plasmonic substrate with multiple "hotspots" for highly sensitive detection of pesticide residues were prepared successfully by assembling gold nanoparticles on buckypaper (AuNPs-BP). The substrate exhibited high SERS enhancement and excellent detection sensitivity, with a detection limit (LOD) of 2.03 × 10 -11 M and 6.88 × 10 -12 M for the probe molecule R6G and MB, respectively. Combined with 3D finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) simulation, the excellent SERS performance of the substrate was attributed to the enhancement of the electromagnetic field around the "hotspots". Additionally, the substrates exhibited excellent flexibility, allowing easy contact with irregular surfaces and facilitating the collection of target molecules on the sample surface. Using a portable Raman spectrometer, the substrate achieved in situ analysis of chlorpyrifos residues on peach, with a LOD as low as 6.8 × 10 -11 M. The method showed high accuracy, with a recovery value ranging from 94.2 % to 115.5 %. The results indicate that the substrate has great potential for rapid and highly sensitive detection of pollutants, especially on non-planar surfaces.

Abstract:In this work, the novel versatile surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spheroid end-facet optical fiber substrate based on directly planting Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the surface of Ag nano-dendrites (AgNDs) via an in-situ growth method with dual-laser assisted was successfully fabricated. The enhancement factor (EF) for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was calculated to be 2.54 × 107 and reached the highest value compared with other AuNPs and AgNDs SERS substrates. 40-day-duration stability tests showed that the Raman intensity of R6G on AuNPs/AgNDs SERS substrate reduced only by 11.16% and improved more stable than the AgNDs SERS substrate of 44.07%. Moreover, due to high SERS performance of AgNDs nanostructures and the chemical stability of AuNPs, the AuNPs/AgNDs SERS substrates were employed for rapid detection of cypermethrin and fenthion with limit of detection (LOD) of 2.87 × 10−4 ppm and 1.7 × 10−4 ppm, respectively. The AuNPs/AgNDs SERS spheroid end-facet optical fiber platform possesses high sensitivity, good uniformity and outstanding temporal stability thus can be used for realization of integrated portable pesticide detection devices.

Abstract:Current label-free surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) assay for the detection and analysis of organophosphorus pesticides has achieved initial success, but the application still faces constraints of substrate portability and specificity. To this end, this paper demonstrates a method for portable, rapid, and specific detection of low concentrations of fenthion pesticides based on a solid substrate of gold nanoparticle monolayers combined with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). The nano-monolayers were transferred to the surface of mercapto-silicon wafers by interfacial self-assembly technique to form a stable connection with S–Au bonds and, at the same time, prevent nanoparticles from dropping off during the surfactant removal process. Then, the fenthion MIPs were directly generated on the surface of the monolayer film by spin-coating with a pre-polymerization solution and ultraviolet-induced polymerization. Tests showed that the molecular imprint was able to accurately bind to fenthion, but not other molecules, in a mixture of structural analogs, achieving a low concentration detection of 10–8 mol/L. The composite substrate maintained a signal uniformity of a relative standard deviation (RSD) = 7.05% and a batch-to-batch reproducibility of RSD = 10.40%, making it a potential pathway for the extended application of SERS technology.

Abstract:In this study, we present the fabrication and demonstrate the high performance of a fiber optic surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform featuring self-assembled gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on silver dendrite nanostructures (AgD nanostructures) using a laser-assisted plasmon-mediated method. The uniform distribution of AuNPs on AgD nanostructures resulted in exceptional Raman intensity enhancement, with analytical enhancement factors estimated at 3.37 × 10 7 for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and a consistent SERS signal with an excellent relative standard deviation (RSD) value of 4.8%. Additionally, the stability of this substrate was evaluated over different time intervals, with SERS data for a 1-μM R6G solution collected over 14 days. The substrate's potential was further explored by detecting two toxic pesticides, Chlorpyrifos and Chlordane, with estimated detection limits of 1.24 ppb and 1.64 ppb, respectively. Consequently, the proposed fiber optic SERS platform shows significant potential for detecting Chlorpyrifos and Chlordane in the environment.

Transparent, Flexible Plasmonic Ag NP/PMMA Substrates Using Chemically Patterned Ferroelectric Crystals for Detecting Pesticides on Curved Surfaces

Abstract:Transparent and flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have attracted much interest for the detection of probe molecules on the curved surfaces of real samples, but a facile route to fabricate such substrates is still lacking. Herein, we present a rationally designed, high-performance flexible SERS substrate fabricated using a simple drop and peel-off technique for the ultrasensitive detection of pesticides. The proposed SERS substrate consists of a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) film anchored with plasmonic silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), which are photoreduced using chemically patterned ferroelectric templates. The photoreduced Ag NPs extracted onto the PMMA film offer strong electromagnetic enhancement and produce intensive hotspots for the effective enhancement of the Raman signal. They provide superior SERS performance for the detection of parathion (PT) and fenitrothion (FNT) at trace-level concentrations of 10–9 M and 10–10 M with excellent enhancement factors in the order of 108 and 109, respectively. Moreover, the Ag NP/PMMA SERS substrate has good spot-to-spot uniformity and batch-to-batch reproducibility with the reservation of high detection sensitivity even after the mechanical deformation of bending and torsion up to 50 cycles. The multiplex detection ability is also investigated for the simultaneous detection of PT and FNT. To ensure the practical feasibility, the in-situ, real-time detection of PT and FNT on the curved surfaces of tomato and lemon using a fiber-coupled Raman probe is performed with limits of detection of 4.24 × 10–8 M and 2.74 × 10–9 M. Abstract:Plasmonic gold nanoparticles of different shape attract much interest due to their unique physicochemical properties. Compared to gold nanorods and gold nanospheres, multi-spiny gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with rough surfaces have higher adsorptivity and SERS activity. However, at present, one of the greatest challenges is effective tuning the density of spines of AuNPs. In this work, we describe a synthesis of AuNPs with a tunable number of spines. Furthermore, we propose a new mechanism to explain the causes of morphological evolution of AuNPs. The synthesized AuNPs with optimum number of spines exhibit extremely high sensitivity to 4-aminothiophenol, its lower limit of detection (LOD) is almost 1 nmol L−1. The SERS spectroscopy with prepared AuNPs was used to detect thiram residues in grapes, and LOD was lower than 1 µmol L−1. These results demonstrate that AuNPs are excellent SERS substrates for detection of chemical contaminants in food.

Surface Imprinted Layer of Cypermethrin upon Au Nanoparticle as a Specific and Selective Coating for the Detection of Template Pesticide Molecules

Abstract:The detection of specific pesticides on food products is essential as these substances pose health risks due to their toxicity. The use of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) takes advantage of the straightforward technique to obtain fingerprint spectra of target analytes. In this study, SERS-active substrates are made using Au nanoparticles (NPs) coated with a layer of polymer and followed by imprinting with a pesticide–Cypermethrin, as a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). Cypermethrin was eventually removed and formed as template cavities, then denoted as Au NP/MIP, to capture the analogous molecules. The captured molecules situated in-between the areas of high electromagnetic field formed by plasmonic Au NPs result in an effect of SERS. The formation of Au NP/MIP was, respectively, studied through morphological analysis using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and compositional analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Two relatively similar pesticides, Cypermethrin and Permethrin, were used as analytes. The results showed that Au NP/MIP was competent to detect both similar molecules despite the imprint being made only by Cypermethrin. Nevertheless, Au NP/MIP has a limited number of imprinted cavities that result in sensing only low concentrations of a pesticide solution. Au NP/MIP is thus a specific design for detecting analogous molecules similar to its template structure.

Abstract:Nanocellulose holds considerable promise as an effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for sensitive detection of trace targets. Flexible and high-sensitivity two-dimensional (2D) SERS substrates based on nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) film were successfully developed via self assembly of two plasma nanoparticles: gold nanoflowers (AuNFs) and silver-coated gold nanocubes (Au@AgNCs). The loading process allows the precise control of nanoparticle distribution density and uniformity on CNC film, which are closely related to the plasma coupling effect between particles. The obtained CNC/Au@AgNC flexible two-dimensional substrate could sensitively detect pesticide residues on apple surface, and the detection limits (LOD) of dimethoate and acetamiprid were 4.1 and 10.7 μg/L, respectively. In addition, Raman signal intensity showed a good linear relationship with pesticide concentration in the range of 10-100 μg/L, which provided great potential for high sensitivity and field detection of dangerous targets.

Abstract:The N and Fe doped carbon dot (CD NFe ) was prepared by microwave procedure. Using CD NFe as the nano-substrate, fipronil (FL) as the template molecule and α-methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, the molecular imprinted polymethacrylic acid nanoprobe (CD NFe @MIP) with difunction was synthesized by microwave procedure. The CD NFe @MIP was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and other techniques. The results show that the nanoprobe not only distinguish FL but also has a strong catalytic effect on the HAuCl 4 –Na 2 C 2 O 4 nanogold indicator reaction. When the nanoprobes specifically recognize FL, their catalytic effect is significantly reduced. Since the AuNPs generated by HAuCl 4 reduction have strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) effects, a SERS/RRS dual-mode sensing platform for detecting 5–500 ng/L FL was constructed. The new analytical method was applied to detect FL in food samples with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.3–8.1 % and a recovery rate of 94.6–104.5 %.

Abstract:In situ fast detection of contaminants in solution is the most mature commercial SERS detection protocol and serves as an effective workflow solution for protecting the public from unexpected exposure to harmful pollutants. However, it is frequently hindered by weakly adsorbed species, trace content, and complicated organic compounds. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanoprobes, constructed through a simple and cost-effective fabrication method, are widely employed in sensing trace substances across various research fields. They excel in providing fingerprinting identification of individual molecules, making them a valuable tool for the detection and quantification of harmful components. Herein, we introduce a novel centrifuge tube-based SERS chip designed as an analytical tool for achieving field-deployable solution detection. This chip is created through a consecutive process involving the unique assembly of heterogeneous plasmonic materials. We achieve this by the co-coupling of Au nanospheres (NSs) and Ag nanocubes (NCs) to form AgNCs/AuNSs films based on a centrifugation process. This approach offers remarkable advantages, including simplicity of operation, straightforward integration, and mass production capabilities. Concurrently, the co-assembly of AgNCs and AuNSs efficiently generates plasmonic metasurfaces and reduces interparticle distance inside the centrifuge tube, ensuring ultrasensitive and reproducible SERS measurements. The optimized SERS sensor demonstrates ultrahigh sensitivity at trace concentrations of 10 -10 M, a high enhancement factor (EF) of 4.69×10 8 , and strong reproducibility with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of approximately 7.5% at 10 -6 M. To assess its practical feasibility, experimental results show that the sensor can directly identify thiram pesticide residues at a low concentration of 10 -8 M with an EF of 1.38 × 10 7 . This proposed sensor not only offers a sensitive, portable, and cost-effective tube-based SERS platform but also has the potential to serve as a versatile SERS sensor for field-deployable identification in ultra-trace molecular detection in solution.

Abstract:Owing to good flexibility, prominent mechanical properties, three-dimensional (3D) nanofibrous structure and low background interference, sustainable bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a highly attractive matrix material for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor. Herein, a highly sensitive, flexible and scalable silver nanorod-decorated BNC (AgNRs@BNC) SERS sensor is developed by a simple vacuum-assisted filtration. The AgNRs were firmly locked in the 3D nanofibrous network of cellulose nanofibers upon vacuum drying process, resulting in the formation of 3D SERS hotspots with a depth of more than 10 μm on the sensor. With 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as a target molecule, a lowest distinguishable level of 10-12 M and a high enhancement factor of 1.1 × 109 were realized by the optimal AgNRs1.5@BNC SERS sensor. Moreover, the AgNRs@BNC SERS sensor exhibits high detectable level of 10-9 M for thiram molecules by integrating with a portable Raman spectrometer. Besides, toxic thiram residues on grape surface could be directly on-site identified by the combination of AgNRs@BNC SERS sensors and a portable Raman spectrometer through a feasible press-and-peel method. The flexible AgNRs@BNC SERS sensor cooperated with portable Raman system demonstrates great potential for on-site detection of pesticide residues on irregular food surfaces.
