Abstract:Examining the role of implicit, unconscious thinking on reasoning, decision making, problem solving, creativity, and its neurocognitive basis, for a genuinely psychological conception of rationality. This volume contributes to a current debate within the psychology of thought that has wide implications for our ideas about creativity, decision making, and economic behavior. The essays focus on the role of implicit, unconscious thinking in creativity and problem solving, the interaction of intuition and analytic thinking, and the relationship between communicative heuristics and thought. The analyses move beyond the conventional conception of mind informed by extra-psychological theoretical models toward a genuinely psychological conception of rationality—a rationality no longer limited to conscious, explicit thought, but able to exploit the intentional implicit level. The contributors consider a new conception of human rationality that must cope with the uncertainty of the real world; the implications of abandoning the normative model of classic logic and adopting a probabilistic approach instead; the argumentative and linguistic aspects of reasoning; and the role of implicit thought in reasoning, creativity, and its neurological base. Abstract:Culture &Psychology, Ahead of Print. The notion of "realistic optimism" seems paradoxical, intertwining the contradictory elements of objective judgment and a positive outlook. Extant research often falls short in analyzing this dilemma and in capturing the cultural nuances. Given Confucianism's endeavors to reconcile realism and optimism, this paper explores the cultivation of realistic optimism in Confucian classics. Further, an account of a contemporary Confucian merchant is provided to illustrate the enduring relevance of these ancient principles in the contemporary business world. This paper highlights two Confucian approaches that facilitate the development of realistic optimism. Firstly, from a preventive stance, "desire modesty" enhances realism by lowering cognitive dissonance and fosters optimism by reducing external motivation that often hinders creative solutions. Secondly, from a promotive perspective, "discernment clarity" promotes realism by cultivating a strong need for cognition; "meaningful adversity" mitigates pessimistic feelings by reframing hardships; and "sincere creativity" bolsters optimism by inspiring innovative solutions. Overall, this paper underscores the crucial role of culture in shaping realistic optimism by illuminating the profound influence of Confucian teachings in transforming this seeming paradox into a lived reality.

Abstract:Understanding the affective, cognitive and behavioural processes involved in risk taking is essential for treatment and for setting environmental conditions to limit damage. Using Temporal Difference Reinforcement Learning (TDRL) we computationally investigated the effect of optimism in risk perception in a variety of goal-oriented tasks. Optimism in risk perception was studied by varying the calculation of the Temporal Difference error, i.e., delta, in three ways: realistic (stochastically correct), optimistic (assuming action control), and overly optimistic (assuming outcome control). We show that for the gambling task individuals with 'healthy' perception of control, i.e., action optimism, do not develop gambling behaviour while individuals with 'unhealthy' perception of control, i.e., outcome optimism, do. We show that high intensity of sensations and low levels of fear co-occur due to optimistic risk perception. We found that overly optimistic risk perception (outcome optimism) results in risk taking and in persistent gambling behaviour in addition to high intensity of sensations. We discuss how our results replicate risk-taking related phenomena.

Abstract:Rationality has been an intriguing topic for several decades. Even the scope of definition of rationality across different subjects varies. Several theories (e.g., game theory) initially evolved on the basis that agents (e.g., humans) are perfectly rational. One interpretation of perfect rationality is that agents always make the optimal decision which maximizes their expected utilities. However, subsequently this assumption was relaxed to include bounded rationality where agents have limitations in terms of computing resources and biases which prevents them to take the optimal decision. However, with recent advances in (quantum) computing, artificial intelligence (AI), science and technology etc., has led to the thought that perhaps the concept of rationality would be augmented with machine intelligence which will enable agents to take decision optimally with higher regularity. However, there are divergent views on this topic. The paper attempts to put forward a recent survey (last five years) of research on these divergent views. These viewsmay be grouped into three schools of thoughts. The first school is the one which is sceptical of progress of AI and believes that human intelligencewill always supersede machine intelligence. The second school of thought thinks that advent of AI and advances in computing will help in better understanding of bounded rationality. Third school of thought believes that bounds of bounded rationality will be extended by advances in AI and various other fields. This survey hopes to provide a starting point for further research.

Abstract:This paper attempts to reconcile the claims that the mind is both flat (Chater, 2018) and highly rational (Oaksford & Chater, 2020). According to the flat mind hypothesis, the mind is a mass of inconsistent and contradictory fragments of experience. However, standard accounts of rationality from formal epistemology argue that to be rational, our beliefs must be consistent, and we must believe all the logical consequences of our beliefs. A social account of rationality is developed based on Brandom's (1994) logical expressivism, in which respecting the norms of logic and probability theory is still central but where these standards apply to our public commitments in social dialogical contexts rather than to our individual belief systems (Skovgaard‐Olsen, 2017). According to this account, even if someone's individual beliefs are inconsistent, they cannot be condemned as irrational if they acknowledge the inconsistency and seek to resolve it. It is shown how this approach interacts with people's fragmented and shallow world knowledge, and its social distribution yields some counterintuitive consequences, such as it sometimes being rational individually not seeking to resolve contradictions. Other consequences of this social expressivist approach are considered, including for dual process theories of reasoning, our view of beliefs, the status of logic, and Fodor's (1983) view of central systems. It is concluded that people can have flat minds and yet be highly rational.

Abstract:This chapter explains the role that theoretical and practical rationality play in decisional autonomy. The author contrasts his rationalist approach with other prominent rationalist theories of autonomy in bioethics developed by Rebecca Walker and Julian Savulescu. He suggests that one way in which both of these theories fall short is that they fail to offer a deep explanation of why we should trust that our evaluative judgements are the seat of autonomous decision-making. In order to provide such an explanation, in the second half of the chapter, the author situates his rationalist account in the literature on the philosophy of action. The discussion suggests that coherence theories of personal autonomy can offer this kind of explanation, and argues that supplementing such theories with considerations of theoretical rationality and an objectivist account of reasons can help to forestall some objections to such an approach.

Abstract:Rationality is frequently associated with making the best possible decisions. It's widely acknowledged that humans, as rational beings, have limitations in their decision-making capabilities. Nevertheless, recent advancements in fields, such as, computing, science and technology, combined with the availability of vast amounts of data, have sparked optimism that these developments could potentially expand the boundaries of human bounded rationality through the augmentation of machine intelligence. In this paper, findings from a computational model demonstrated that when an increasing number of agents independently strive to achieve global optimality, facilitated by improved computing power, etc., they indirectly accelerated the occurrence of the "tragedy of the commons" by depleting shared resources at a faster rate. Further, as agents achieve optimality, there is a drop in information entropy among the solutions of the agents. Also, clear economic divide emerges among agents. Considering, two groups, one as producer and the other (the group agents searching for optimality) as consumer of the highest consumed resource, the consumers seem to gain more than the producers. Thus, bounded rationality could be seen as boon to sustainability.

Abstract:To make sense of the social world, people reason about others' mental states, including whether and in what ways others can form new mental states. We propose that people's judgments concerning the dynamics of mental state change invoke a "naive theory of reasoning." On this theory, people conceptualize reasoning as a rational, semi-autonomous process that individuals can leverage, but not override, to form new rational mental states. Across six experiments, we show that this account of people's naive theory of reasoning predicts judgments about others' ability to form rational and irrational beliefs, desires, and intentions, as well as others' ability to act rationally and irrationally. This account predicts when, and explains why, people judge others as psychologically constrained by coercion and other forms of situational pressure. Abstract:Standard economic theory says that the rational approach to a decision is to weigh all alternatives on all relevant dimensions and then to select the one with the highest weight. Such a procedure would maximize subjective expected utility. But, because of constraints on time and available information, people and other animals often bypass this process by using “fast and frugal” heuristics to make decisions. Rationality is thus said to be “bounded” by time and information constraints. The articles in this book describe and organize common heuristics. They show that use of such heuristics is generally the best approach to many real world problems and therefore not irrational. Heuristics evolved, they say, not as deviations from rationality but as aids to rationality in cases where the standard model would have proved to be too slow or inefficient. Although the approach of almost all of the authors of these papers is that of cognitive psychology—a focus on internal cognitive mechanisms—their findings and even their theories may be interpreted in terms of reinforcement and punishment acting on behavioral patterns.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Collagen production by human skin fibroblast cultures was studied by incubation with [3H] proline and several glucocorticosteroids known to produce dermal atrophy in vivo. Collagen production was measured as formation of [3H]hydroxyproline or collagenase‐digestible3H‐polypeptides, and the values were corrected for changes in cell number in the same cultures. The steroids, in a wide concentration range, failed to elicit any consistent alterations in collagen production. Review of the literature dealing with corticosteroid‐induced changes in collagen production by human skin fibroblasts indicate conflicting results even under apparently similar incubation conditions. Consequently, no unifying hypothesis for steroid‐induced dermal atrophy can be developed presently based on the in vitro data.

Abstract:We develop a model of wishful thinking that incorporates the costs and benefits of biased beliefs. We establish the connection between distorted beliefs and risk, revealing how wishful thinking can be understood in terms of risk measures. Our model accommodates extreme beliefs, allowing wishful-thinking decision-makers to assign zero probability to undesirable states and positive probability to otherwise impossible states.

Abstract:This chapter discusses responses to the author’s “Rationality’s Fixed Point (or: In Defense of Right Reason).” Among other things, the chapter: explains how the author understands rationality; explains why akrasia is irrational; intuitively overviews the argument from the Akratic Principle to the Fixed Point Thesis; explains why you can’t avoid this argument by distinguishing the rational from the reasonable, ideal rationality from everyday rationality, or substantive from structural norms; responds to the suggestion that misleading higher-order evidence creates rational dilemmas; explains why the Fixed Point Thesis doesn’t assume objectivist or externalist notions of rationality; dismisses complaints about agents who aren’t able to “figure out” what’s rational; then responds to an objection that peer disagreement undermines doxastic justification. Finally, the chapter modifies the author’s steadfast position on peer disagreement to take into account cases in which peer disagreement rationally affects an agent’s first-order opinions without affecting higher-order ones.

Abstract:This is a response to Barbara Fredrickson's comment [American Psychologist 68, 814-822 (2013)] on our article arXiv:1307.7006. We analyze critically the renewed claims made by Fredrickson (2013) concerning positivity ratios and "flourishing", and attempt to disentangle some conceptual confusions; we also address the alleged empirical evidence for nonlinear effects. We conclude that there is no evidence whatsoever for the existence of any "tipping points", and only weak evidence for the existence of any nonlinearity of any kind. Our original concern, that the application of advanced mathematical techniques in psychology and related disciplines may not always be appropriate, remains undiminished.

Abstract:This study assessed the construct validities and the relationships between Optimism [21], Hope [27], Self-Efficacy [18], and Locus of Control [12]. The validities and relationships between these scales were examined not only because they are to some degree rival constructs but also because there is an outstanding theoretical question in the literature of whether each of these variables is a state or trait variable or both. Synder' Hope scale was the "know marker" trait-state scale in this study. Data were obtained on all scales from 78 at-risk university students and 22 regular (or normal) students, as all scales either make claims about or have existing data on these two different types of subjects. Other background data were also collected. A Manova on the 13 variables for which data were obtained found significant profile differences between the two groups of subjects as theory and the literature predicted at the 0.01 level. The trait-state two factor structure of Synder's Hope scale was found except the structure was orthogonal in at-risk students as opposed to the oblique structure Synder found in normals. The same strong results were obtained for Schiever and Carver's Optimism scale which additionally resolved an outstanding interpetability issue with this scale. Hypothesized factor structures were not obtained for the self-efficacy or the locus of control scales and both scales best fit the trait-sate model, which contradicts Bandura's and other prevailing view of these two variables, but supports the results found by Bandalos et al. [2].

Abstract:We review the literature showing that positive illusions (i.e., self-aggrandizement, unrealistic optimism, and exaggerated perceptions of control) are common and associated with successful adjustment to stressful events, including conditions of extreme adversity. Using theory and recent data, we offer a basis for integrating positive illusions with the constraints of reality. We explicitly contrast the social psychological model of positive illusions with a personality viewpoint that addresses the question "Do higher levels of positive illusions predict higher levels of adjustment?" These issues are explored in the context of people coping with an array of normal stressful events, as well as those coping with more extreme stressful events, including cancer, heart disease, and HIV infection.

THE ROLE OF OPTIMISM FOR MENTAL WELL-BEING IN A POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY INTERVENTION

Abstract:Introduction: In recent years, growing evidence suggests that increasing mental health proves to be an effective way of reducing symptoms of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. This study investigates the role of optimism in mental well-being. A secondary analysis was conducted on a positive psychological self-help intervention to ascertain the relationship between optimism and mental well-being and to find out if optimism can be effectively improved by taking part in a positive psychological intervention. Methods: A total of 275 participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n=137) which received self-help book or to a wait-list control condition (n=138). They filled in online self-reporting questionnaires at baseline and after three and six months. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyse the relation between optimism and mental wellbeing. A repeated measures ANOVA analysis was used to determine to what extent optimism had increased after the intervention. Results: A significant positive correlation between optimism and mental well-being has been found at all times of measurement. This correlation was particularly strong three and six months after the start of the intervention. The repeated measures ANOVA analysis revealed a significant and time-stable increase in levels of optimism after the intervention for both the merged group and the experimental group. Discussion: The findings of this study underline the importance of optimism for mental wellbeing. Furthermore, the results indicate that optimism could be well-suited as a component of future positive psychological interventions. Additional research is necessary to establish the effects of other similar concepts on mental well-being.

Abstract:We propose that, in the pursuit of ongoing goals, optimistic expectations of future goal pursuit have greater impact on immediate actions than do less optimistic considerations, such as retrospections on past goal pursuit or less optimistic expectations. Further, we propose that the direction of the impact is determined by the framing of goal pursuit: it motivates goal-congruent actions when goal pursuit is framed as commitment to the goal but motivates goal-incongruent actions when the pursuit is framed as progress toward the goal. Four studies provided consistent support for the proposed hypothesis.
Scepticism, closure and rationally grounded knowledge: a new solution

Abstract:Radical scepticism contends that our knowledge of the external world is impossible. Particularly, radical scepticism can be motivated by the closure principle (i.e., if one knows that P and one can competently deduce Q from P, then one is in a position to know that Q). Several commentators have noted that a straightforward way to respond to such arguments is via externalist strategies, e.g., Goldman (Justification and knowledge, Reidel, Dordrecht, 1979, Epistemology and cognition, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, 1986), Greco (Putting skeptics in their places, Cambridge University Press, New York, 2000), Bergmann (Justification without awareness, Oxford University Press, New York, 2006). However, these externalist strategies are not effective against a slightly weaker form of the argument, a closure principle for rationally grounded knowledge, \({closure}_{RK.}\) The sceptical argument, framed around the \(\hbox {closure}_{\mathrm{RK}}\) principle (i.e., if S has rationally grounded knowledge that P, and S competently deduces Q from P, thereby forming a belief that Q on this basis while retaining her rationally grounded knowledge that P, then S has rationally grounded knowledge that Q), targets rationally grounded knowledge. Although externalist strategies are ineffective against this form of argument, its conclusion can nonetheless be resisted by combining, in a novel way, the resources of Wittgenstein and Davidson. In particular, I argue that the sceptic is assuming an unrestricted way of using the \(\hbox {closure}_{\mathrm{RK}}\) principle, which is incorrect. Alternatively, I argue for The Conditionality of Rational Support Thesis, i.e., the thesis that rational support via competent deduction is conditional. In particular, rational support must be provided within an evaluative system in which hinge propositions are presupposed and contentful beliefs are being evaluated. In the end, we can resist the \(\hbox {closure}_{\mathrm{RK }}\)-based sceptical argument while retaining the \(\hbox {closure}_{\mathrm{RK}}\) principle.

Abstract:Some examples of human behavior which seem paradoxical or irrational in view of the utility maximization principle can be explained as rational if we distinguish between two types of utility. The first type is the conventional utility – cardinal or ordinal – which the rational economic actors are expected to maximize. The second type is connected to actions which fulfill some psychological needs and might appear irrational by cost-effective calculations. Two instances of the second type are philanthropy and altruism on the one hand and excessive consumption, on the other. Although they stem from totally different drives, both are economically irrational but can be linked to the utility of the second type. The two-utilities model is rooted in Humanistic Psychology tenets, such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs as well as in recent results in Happiness Economics. It can be assumed that, on the average, the richer a person is, the less he cares about maximizing the first type of utility, while the importance of the second type in his life increases. As the society becomes more prosperous, both positive and negative trends of the second type of utility become more widespread: more resources are wasted on unnecessary products and services, and more money is spent on philanthropy. The two-utilities model can explain some seemingly odd features of the prosperous society, and may have practical applications as well. This article is scheduled to be a chapter in a book on the economics of the prosperous society. My claim is that there is a gap between economic theory and economic reality in the western world, since economics was traditionally established to deal with conditions of scarcity. As many of our current problems are associated with abundance rather than with scarcity, new tools are needed to tackle the modern dilemmas.
