Abstract:Background The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a loss of clinical clerkship opportunities for medical students. To address this problem while maintaining patient safety, this pilot study explored the feasibility of using a wearable headset to live stream teaching ward rounds to remotely based medical students. Methods Three live streamed teaching ward rounds were delivered to three groups of medical students (n=53) using the Microsoft HoloLens 2 device and Microsoft Teams software, and results pooled for analysis. Feedback was gathered from students and instructors using the evaluation of technology-enhanced learning materials (ETELM). Patient feedback was gathered using the Communication Assessment Tool to explore any impact on interpersonal communication. Results The response rate for the ETELM-learner perceptions was 58% (31/53), 100% for the ETELM-instructor perceptions. Students strongly agreed that the overall quality of the teaching session and instructors was excellent. However, 32% experienced issues with audio or video quality and one remote student reported cyber sickness. The statement ‘educational activities encouraged engagement with session materials/content’ returned the most varied response. Instructors reported technological problems with delivery while using the HoloLens 2 device and environmental noise in the ward was a disruptive factor. Preparation and skilled facilitation were key to delivering a high-quality teaching session. Patients reacted generally favourably to the technology and no negative effects on interpersonal communication were identified. Conclusion The experience of live streamed ward rounds was well received by patients, medical students and teaching faculty. However, there remain limitations to the routine use of HoloLens 2 technology in our setting including steep learning curves, hardware costs and environmental factors such as noise and WiFi connectivity. Live streamed ward rounds have potential postpandemic implications for the judicious use of resources, and the possibility for few educationally minded clinicians to teach at scale in a patient-friendly manner.
The feasibility and usability of mixed reality teaching in a hospital setting based on self-reported perceptions of medical students

Abstract:Background: Clinical teaching during encounters with real patients lies at the heart of medical education. Mixed reality (MR) using a Microsoft HoloLens 2 (HL2) offers the potential to address several challenges: including enabling remote learning; decreasing infection control risks; facilitating greater access to medical specialties; and enhancing learning by vertical integration of basic principles to clinical application. We aimed to assess the feasibility and usability of MR using the HL2 for teaching in a busy, tertiary referral university hospital. Methods: This prospective observational study examined the use of the HL2 to facilitate a live two-way broadcast of a clinician-patient encounter, to remotely situated third and fourth year medical students. System Usability Scale (SUS) Scores were elicited from participating medical students, clinician, and technician. Feedback was also elicited from participating patients. A modified Evaluation of Technology-Enhanced Learning Materials: Learner Perceptions Questionnaire (mETELM) was completed by medical students and patients. Results: This was a mixed methods prospective, observational study, undertaken in the Day of Surgery Assessment Unit. Forty-seven medical students participated. The mean SUS score for medical students was 71.4 (SD 15.4), clinician (SUS = 75) and technician (SUS = 70) indicating good usability. The mETELM Questionnaire using a 7-point Likert Scale demonstrated MR was perceived to be more beneficial than a PowerPoint presentation (Median = 7, Range 6-7). Opinion amongst the student cohort was divided as to whether the MR tutorial was as beneficial for learning as a live patient encounter would have been (Median = 5, Range 3-6). Students were positive about the prospect of incorporating of MR in future tutorials (Median = 7, Range 5-7). The patients' mETELM results indicate the HL2 did not affect communication with the clinician (Median = 7, Range 7-7). The MR tutorial was preferred to a format based on small group teaching at the bedside (Median = 6, Range 4-7). Conclusions: Our study findings indicate that MR teaching using the HL2 demonstrates good usability characteristics for providing education to medical students at least in a clinical setting and under conditions similar to those of our study. Also, it is feasible to deliver to remotely located students, although certain practical constraints apply including Wi-Fi and audio quality.
Augmented Reality in Medical Education: A Mixed Methods Feasibility Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Augmented reality (AR) is a novel technology with many applications in medical education. Perhaps one of the most beneficial potential applications is to enable better clinical access for students; however, there is limited research into this use. The purpose of this mixed-methods feasibility study was to evaluate the applicability and acceptability of AR in undergraduate and early postgraduate medical education.METHODS: Single-group quasi-experimental study design was developed for critical care-themed simulation teaching delivered using Microsoft HoloLens (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington, United States). Post-test questionnaires were completed including a validated adapted immersive experience questionnaire (AIEQ) and an abridged intrinsic motivation inventory (AIMI). The AIMI focused on the domains of 'interest and enjoyment', and 'value and usefulness'. Following the teaching, focus group interviews with thematic analysis were conducted to evaluate participants' experiences with AR.RESULTS: All 15 participants (100%) completed the AIEQ and AIMI. Co-located airway teaching (i.e., the demonstrator and participants were placed in the same AR environment) was reported as having a moderate level of user immersion (median 72) and a high level of user enjoyment and value (median 52). Thematic analysis revealed four key themes: visual conceptualization for learning, accessibility, varied immersion, and future application. Conclusions: Remote simulation for the management of airways in critical care was found to be acceptable and afforded a high level of enjoyment and value. Similarly, this was reflected in the thematic analysis. However, immersion was rated variably in both AIEQ and thematic analysis. The challenges identified with the application of AR included technical infrastructure and patient consent. AR-enabled education benefits are relevant to a number of clinical teaching areas.

Abstract:Healthcare education and practice has significantly been impacted by COVID-19. This includes the challenge on pedagogical approaches that highlight the potential of technology to facilitate innovative new approaches in response to social distancing, lockdowns, remote learning and improving the patient experience and positive outcomes. Many of these innovative approaches are not fundamentally new but are now seeing relevance beyond early adopters to mainstream implementation. This presentation draws upon collaborations with educational researchers and technologists that have explored the integration of technology into healthcare education and practice. COVID-19 Adversity to Opportunity Many healthcare programmes required reenvisaging teaching and learning approaches in response to COVID-19 restrictions. This had a particular impact on the development of interpersonal and practical knowledge and skills essential for healthcare graduates. The limited access to on-campus learning provided an opportunity for both institutional and individual evaluation of pedagogical practices. The affordances of traditional, didactic, and “hands-on” skills were compared with those that could be facilitated using online asynchronous/ synchronous strategies. A particular concern was the development of the interpersonal and practical skills required in safe and effective healthcare practice. Alongside easing of restrictions, these skills were adapted using online demonstrations within the limits of socially distanced “bubbles”, telehealth and limited clinical placements. Reconsideration of summative assessments was also required- with the introduction online synchronous and asynchronous verbal assessments, and asynchronous submissions of practical skills online (Cochrane et al., 2021; Narayan et al., 2021). In the prospect of COVID-19 restrictions continuing to lift, it is envisioned that most of the reenvisaged pedagogical approaches to healthcare education will persist, without compromising student critical thinking or practical skills. Interprofessional Collaboration This presentation will highlight the importance of interprofessional collaboration in healthcare curriculum design using a Design-Based-Research methodology (Chen et al., 2020; Kartoğlu et al., 2020) to facilitate authentic learning and develop self-determined learning capabilities for healthcare professionals. DBR- Design Principles in response to COVID Transferable design principles will be introduced for enhancing healthcare education that will improve practice in a COVID19 world, particularly drawing from eight healthcare projects including: STUDIO602 – enhancing clinical practice with mobile technologies (Cochrane & Sinfield, 2021), developing a virtual reality handover experience for healthcare students (Cochrane et al., 2018), using immersive reality to develop critical thinking in clinical health education (Stretton et al., 2018), enhancing first responder clinical simulation education using immersive reality and biometrics (Cochrane et al., 2020), designing authentic learning for graduate entry nursing students (Macdiarmid et al., 2021), designing public and environmental health education (Kersey et al., 2018), Biomedical engineering (Lam et al., 2021), and physiology education (Fabris et al., 2019). Abstract:Background: In the wake of challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic to conventional medical education, the demand for innovative teaching methods has surged. Nurse training, with its focus on hands-on practice and self-directed learning, encountered significant hurdles with conventional approaches. Augmented reality (AR) offers a potential solution to addressing this issue. Objective: The aim of this study was to develop, introduce, and evaluate an AR-based educational program designed for nurses, focusing on its potential to facilitate hands-on practice and self-directed learning. Methods: An AR-based educational program for nursing was developed anchored by the Kern six-step framework. First, we identified challenges in conventional teaching methods through interviews and literature reviews. Interviews highlighted the need for hands-on practice and on-site self-directed learning with feedback from a remote site. The training goals of the platform were established by expert trainers and researchers, focusing on the utilization of a ventilator and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation system. Intensive care nurses were enrolled to evaluate AR education. We then assessed usability and acceptability of the AR training using the System Usability Scale and Technology Acceptance Model with intensive care nurses who agreed to test the new platform. Additionally, selected participants provided deeper insights through semistructured interviews. Results: This study highlights feasibility and key considerations for implementing an AR-based educational program for intensive care unit nurses, focusing on training objectives of the platform. Implemented over 2 months using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides and HoloLens 2, 28 participants were trained. Feedback gathered through interviews with the trainers and trainees indicated a positive reception. In particular, the trainees mentioned finding AR particularly useful for hands-on learning, appreciating its realism and the ability for repetitive practice. However, some challenges such as difficulty in adapting to the new technology were expressed. Overall, AR exhibits potential as a supplementary tool in nurse education. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study to substitute conventional methods with AR in this specific area of critical care nursing. These results indicate the multiple principal factors to take into consideration when adopting AR education in hospitals. AR is effective in promoting self-directed learning and hands-on practice, with participants displaying active engagement and enhanced skill acquisition. Immersive medical training: a comprehensive longitudinal study of extended reality in emergency scenarios for large student groups

Abstract:Young healthcare professionals and medical graduates often fall short in the practical experience necessary for handling medical emergencies. This can not only lead to strained feelings of inadequacy and insecurity among future physicians and less experienced healthcare providers in general, but also to detrimental outcomes for patients as emergency medicine demands rapid decision-making with low tolerance for errors. New didactic modalities and approaches may be needed to effectively address this shortcoming. Immersive technologies are powerful novel educational tools with untapped potential in medical training, and may be particularly suitable for simulation trainings in the high-stakes field of emergency medicine.Herein, we systematically explored the educational potential of extended reality (XR) technology, particularly virtual reality (VR), in the management of patients presenting as medical emergencies, combining the use of the STEP-VR application with an untethered hardware setup.Importantly, we aimed at studying multiple, large cohorts of senior medical students involving a total of 529 participants and collecting data over a period of two years. We assessed students' acceptance of the training through a modified questionnaire measuring device handling, content complexity, degree of immersion, learning success, and seminar design.Our results show high, sustained acceptance and ease of use across different student cohorts and subgroups, with most students finding XR/VR engaging and beneficial for acquiring emergency medicine skills. Importantly, the prevalence of simulation sickness was minimal. Moreover, no major effect of the head-mounted displays (HMDs) price range was noted with regard to the learning experience. The results underscore the potential of XR/VR capabilities in effectively enhancing medical education, particularly in areas of high-stakes clinical scenarios and emergency care, by providing realistic and reproducible immersive training environments.In summary, our findings suggest that XR/VR-based training approaches could significantly contribute to preparing future physicians for the complexities of emergency medical care, encouraging the integration of such technologies into medical curricula. However, careful consideration must be given to its suitability for all students and the practical challenges of its implementation, highlighting the need for further research to harness its full potential for medical education.
Structured Exposure Achieves High Acceptance of Immersive Technology Among Medical Students and Educators

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) is a potent educational tool with untapped potential in medical training. However, its integration into medical schools faces challenges such as cybersickness and hesitancy among medical students and professionals. Notably, there has been no systematic assessment of the acceptance of medical educational VR applications by both students and educators. In our single-center study, we enrolled 133 medical students and 14 medical educators. Following a practical demonstration of the established VR anatomy application, Sharecare YOU VR, participants completed a self-reporting survey based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), exploring user acceptance of information technologies and focusing on perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEU), and attitude toward using (ATU). We also sought insights into potential future applications of VR in medical education. Our findings indicate a high level of acceptance among medical students and educators upon structured exposure to VR with significantly positive responses for all three TAM variables (PU, PEU, and ATU). Intriguingly, hands-on experience influenced acceptance. Students envisioned VR's benefits in anatomy, surgery, emergency medicine, and communication skill training with patients. Both students and educators believed that VR could enhance traditional approaches and complement the existing curriculum, anticipating improved preparedness for medical students through VR training applications. In conclusion, our results demonstrate the receptivity of both students and educators to immersive technologies, including VR, in medical education. Importantly, the data suggest that the adoption of VR in this field would be welcomed rather than resisted, potentially enhancing students' self-efficacy and enriching the medical school curriculum.

Learning Outcomes of Immersive Technologies in Health Care Student Education: Systematic Review of the Literature

Abstract:Background There is a lack of evidence in the literature regarding the learning outcomes of immersive technologies as educational tools for teaching university-level health care students. Objective The aim of this review is to assess the learning outcomes of immersive technologies compared with traditional learning modalities with regard to knowledge and the participants’ learning experience in medical, midwifery, and nursing preclinical university education. Methods A systematic review was conducted according to the Cochrane Collaboration guidelines. Randomized controlled trials comparing traditional learning methods with virtual, augmented, or mixed reality for the education of medicine, nursing, or midwifery students were evaluated. The identified studies were screened by 2 authors independently. Disagreements were discussed with a third reviewer. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI). The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews) in April 2020. Results Of 15,627 studies, 29 (0.19%) randomized controlled trials (N=2722 students) were included and evaluated using the MERSQI tool. Knowledge gain was found to be equal when immersive technologies were compared with traditional learning modalities; however, the learning experience increased with immersive technologies. The mean MERSQI score was 12.64 (SD 1.6), the median was 12.50, and the mode was 13.50. Immersive technology was predominantly used to teach clinical skills (15/29, 52%), and virtual reality (22/29, 76%) was the most commonly used form of immersive technology. Knowledge was the primary outcome in 97% (28/29) of studies. Approximately 66% (19/29) of studies used validated instruments and scales to assess secondary learning outcomes, including satisfaction, self-efficacy, engagement, and perceptions of the learning experience. Of the 29 studies, 19 (66%) included medical students (1706/2722, 62.67%), 8 (28%) included nursing students (727/2722, 26.71%), and 2 (7%) included both medical and nursing students (289/2722, 10.62%). There were no studies involving midwifery students. The studies were based on the following disciplines: anatomy, basic clinical skills and history-taking skills, neurology, respiratory medicine, acute medicine, dermatology, communication skills, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. Conclusions Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality play an important role in the education of preclinical medical and nursing university students. When compared with traditional educational modalities, the learning gain is equal with immersive technologies. Learning outcomes such as student satisfaction, self-efficacy, and engagement all increase with the use of immersive technology, suggesting that it is an optimal tool for education.

Abstract:This paper describes the findings of a case-controlled study of 100 patients with primary liver cell carcinoma, sex- and age-matched with another 100 patients seen at the orthopaedic clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Contrary to widespread belief, the relative risks of cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption were not found to be statistically significant. The implication of this on the possible aetiology of primary liver cancer is discussed.

Abstract:The medial and lateral menisci play important roles in knee biomechanics, kinematics, and stability. Unfortunately, these structures are prone to damage and, because of a tenuous blood supply, have great difficulty healing. Many interventions have been proposed for treatment of damaged meniscal tissue, but most surgical options are fraught with difficulties, from continued osteoarthritic degeneration to potential for disease transmission. The field of tissue engineering has made wide inroads into constructing meniscal tissue. Investigations involving collagenous tissue, meniscal fibrochondrocytes, chondrocytes, synthetic scaffolds, and gene therapy have all been reported in the literature. Despite these advances, however, more work needs to be done, including incorporating concepts and applications from other engineering disciplines, to potentiate the possibility of a tissue-engineered meniscus that approximates native tissue. In particular, the histologic, morphologic, and biomechanical properties of tissue-engineered meniscal constructs must be better understood to facilitate this goal.

Abstract:Among the various methods of application techniques in low level laser therapy (LLLT) (HeNe 632.8 nm visible red or infrared 820-830 nm continuous wave and 904 nm pulsed emission) there are very promising "trigger points" (TPs), i.e., myofascial zones of particular sensibility and of highest projection of focal pain points, due to ischemic conditions. The effect of LLLT and the results obtained after clinical treatment of more than 200 patients (headaches and facial pain, skeletomuscular ailments, myogenic neck pain, shoulder and arm pain, epicondylitis humery, tenosynovitis, low back and radicular pain, Achilles tendinitis) to whom the "trigger points" were applied were better than we had ever expected. According to clinical parameters, it has been observed that the rigidity decreases, the mobility is restored (functional recovery), and the spontaneous or induced pain decreases or even disappears, by movement, too. LLLT improves local microcirculation and it can also improve oxygen supply to hypoxic cells in the TP areas and at the same time it can remove the collected waste products. The normalization of the microcirculation, obtained due to laser applications, interrupts the "circulus vitiosus" of the origin of the pain and its development (Melzak: muscular tension > pain > increased tension > increased pain, etc.). Results measured according to VAS/VRS/PTM: in acute pain, diminished more than 70%; in chronic pain more than 60%. Clinical effectiveness (success or failure) depends on the correctly applied energy dose--over/underdosage produces opposite, negative effects on cellular metabolism. We did not observe any negative effects on the human body and the use of analgesic drugs could be reduced or completely excluded. Abstract:BackgroundThe COVID‐19 pandemic has necessitated the need to develop teaching innovations that provide safe, authentic clinical encounters which facilitate experiential learning. In tandem with the dissemination of teleconsultation and online teaching, this pilot study describes, evaluates and justifies a multi‐camera live‐streaming teaching session to medical students from the clinical environment.ApproachMultiple audio and video inputs capturing an outpatient clinic setting were routed through Open Broadcast Software (OBS) to create a customised feed streamed to remote learners through a videoconferencing platform. Sessions were conducted between September 2020 and March 2021. Twelve students sequentially interacted with a patient who held an iPad. Higher quality Go‐Pro cameras captured the scene, allowing students to view the consultation from the patient and doctor's perspective. A consultant then conducted a 'gold standard' patient consultation observed by students. A faculty member remotely facilitated the session, providing pre‐clinic teaching and debriefing. The equipment required with costing for a standard and low‐cost version is described, as well as a set‐up schematic and overview of ideal conditions and barriers encountered during trials.EvaluationAll students completed a post‐participation questionnaire, rating the overall quality of the sessions as 9.7/10. The quality of online facilitation, utility of observing peers' and consultant interaction with the patient, opportunity for peer‐to‐peer learning and availability of multiple camera angles were particularly valued by students.ImplicationsThis innovation permits an authentic clinical interaction to be experienced by multiple students remotely, promoting equitable access to high‐quality teaching, while maintaining the safety of students and patients.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) is a relatively new technology that allows for digitally generated three-dimensional representations to be integrated with real environmental stimuli. AR can make use of smart phones, tablets, or other devices to achieve a highly stimulating learning environment and hands-on immersive experience. The use of AR in industry is becoming widespread with applications being developed for use not just for entertainment and gaming but also healthcare, retail and marketing, education, military, travel and tourism, automotive industry, manufacturing, architecture, and engineering. Due to the distinct learning advantages that AR offers, such as remote learning and interactive simulations, AR-based teaching programs are also increasingly being adopted within medical schools across the world. These advantages are further highlighted by the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused an even greater shift towards online learning. In this review, we investigate the use of AR in medical training/education and its effect on students' experiences and learning outcomes. This includes the main goals of AR-based learning, such as to simplify the delivery and enhance the comprehension of complex information. We also describe how AR can enhance the experiences of medical students, by improving knowledge and understanding, practical skills and social skills. These concepts are discussed within the context of specific AR medical training programs, such as HoloHuman, OculAR SIM, and HoloPatient. Finally, we discuss the challenges of AR in learning and teaching and propose future directions for the use of this technology in medical education.

Abstract:What was the educational challenge?There is a growing need for healthcare simulation options when local expertise or resources are not available. To connect instructors with remote learners, current options for distance simulation are typically limited to videoconferencing on desktop computers or mobile devices, which may not fully capture the complexity of clinical scenarios.What was the solution?Extended reality (XR) technology may provide a more immersive and realistic distance healthcare simulation experience compared to traditional videoconferencing options. Unlike computer- or phone-based video calls, stereoscopic video in XR provides a sense of depth that may increase spatial understanding and engagement in distance simulation.How was the solution implemented?We investigated the impact of XR for synchronous distance simulation compared to traditional desktop-based videoconferencing in Emergency Medicine (EM) resident training for an obstetrical emergency. A randomized controlled experiment was conducted with half of the residents using XR and half using computers to participate in the simulation.What lessons were learned that are relevant to a wider global audience?There was an unanticipated interaction between postgraduate year and condition such that performance in the XR condition was superior for first year residents, while this was reversed for more experienced residents. This indicates that the benefits of XR might be dependent on participant characteristics, such as learner level.What are the next steps?We plan to extend this research to clarify characteristics of learners and tasks that are important determinants of differences in outcomes between stereoscopic XR versus traditional videoconference displays.
Immersive XR Anatomy Teaching Tools: Review of four custom‐built virtual spaces, their deployments and educational value

Abstract:Use of digital anatomical teaching resources mitigate trends of decreased anatomy contact hours, elimination of cadaveric specimens or student‐led dissections of them, remote or hybrid learning in response to COVID‐19, and to integrate anatomy content with radiology, surgery and other clinical applications. While there are a plethora of atlases built with cadaveric images, radiology, and artist‐rendered 3D models, we often find a disconnect between the complex geometry of many anatomical structures and the 2D screen interfaces used by students to access these digital resources. The open‐source Mozilla Hubs platform allows for the creation of customizable 3D virtual spaces, accessible via URL on a mobile, desktop, or virtual reality (VR) device. This platform was used to create four educational experiences deployed to first and second year medical students during pre‐clerkship courses: a desktop‐based tour of the surface and chambers of the heart; a VR tour of the chambers of the heart; a desktop‐based foregut escape room integrated with questions and multimedia clinical supplements; and a VR tour of the structure and neurovasculature of the pterygopalatine fossa. In each experience, the students are immersed within these anatomical spaces, encouraged to explore and appreciate the spatial relationships and orientations of key internal structures. When applicable, radiological imaging, videos, and animations display physiologic processes, the flow of blood and other fluids, and the functionality of a given structure in vivo. Audio and text instructions, labels, and additional information guide student learning, encouraging directed exploration while immersed in the experience. This presentation will discuss the four experiences, display real‐time video capture of the interactions and spaces, their deployment, educational value, and student reception. Students’ feedback suggests that the context and timing of the deployment of these experiences is crucial for student learning and appreciation, including the role of faculty assistance and training on how to navigate the interface prior to the educational intervention. Qualitative feedback and performance on pre‐ and post‐ experience quizzes show that these experiences are both statistically and perceptually valuable educational resources, and that the novel nature of this experience is engaging and exciting to students when deployed appropriately. This presentation will conclude with suggestions for best practices in choosing, developing, and deploying custom immersive educational interventions to anatomy learners.

Mixed methods evaluation of the impact of the COVID-19 ICU remote-learning rehabilitation course for frontline health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK

Abstract:Background: Optimising outcomes for critically ill patients with COVID-19 patients requires early interdisciplinary rehabilitation. As admission numbers soared through the pandemic, the redeployed workforce needed rapid, effective training to deliver these rehabilitation interventions. Methods: The COVID-19 ICU Remote-Learning Rehab Course (CIRLC-rehab) is a one-day interdisciplinary course developed after the success of CIRLC-acute. The aim of CIRLC-rehab was to rapidly train healthcare professionals to deliver physical, nutritional and psychological rehabilitation strategies in the ICU/acute setting. The course used blended learning with interactive tutorials delivered by shielding critical care professionals. CIRLC-rehab was evaluated through a mixed-methods approach, including questionnaires, and follow-up semi-structured interviews to evaluate perceived impact on clinical practice. Quantitative data are reported as n (%) and means (SD). Inductive descriptive thematic analysis with methodological triangulation was used to analyse the qualitative data from the questionnaires and interviews. Results: 805 candidates completed CIRLC-rehab. 627 (78.8%) completed the post-course questionnaire. 95% (n = 596) found CIRLC-rehab extremely or very useful and 96.0% (n = 602) said they were very likely to recommend the course to colleagues. Overall confidence rose from 2.78/5 to 4.14/5. The course promoted holistic and humanised care, facilitated informal networks, promoted interdisciplinary working and equipped the candidates with practical rehabilitation strategies that they implemented into clinical practice. Conclusion: This pragmatic solution to educating redeployed staff during a pandemic increased candidates' confidence in the rehabilitation of critically ill patients. There was also evidence of modifications to clinical care utilising learning from the course that subjectively facilitated holistic and humanised rehabilitation, combined with the importance of recognising the humanity, of those working in ICU settings themselves. Whilst these data are self-reported, we believe that this work demonstrates the real-term benefits of remote, scalable and rapid educational delivery.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies have demonstrated immense potential to transform fields like education and healthcare through immersive and interactive virtual environments (Bower et al., 2014; Dhar et al., 2023; Moro et al., 2021)). However, high costs of proprietary headsets and content platforms have inhibited widespread adoption of these technologies in resource-constrained contexts, especially in developing countries (Karre et al., 2019). Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have the potential to transform how we approach education and healthcare, enhancing access and outcomes especially in developing countries. AR/VR furthers United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 4 through inclusive, equitable education and healthcare (United Nations, 2016). VR can simulate immersive learning environments, providing hands-on medical training to healthcare workers in regions with limited resources. By using VR for anatomy and surgery education, healthcare professionals can gain experience without risk to patients. This improves local healthcare capacity and retention of health workers in remote areas. Similarly, AR and VR can enable experiential learning for students without access to labs or materials (Sinou et al., 2023). This facilitates authentic learning for financially or geographically constrained students (van der Meer et al., 2023). AR/VR health interventions can also improve patient diagnosis and care (Sureja et al., 2023). AR glasses for doctors could display patient vitals or past records during examinations to improve diagnostic capabilities. Remote consultations can connect rural healthcare workers with urban specialists via AR assistive tools during complex treatments. AR/VR distraction therapy has also proven effective during painful procedures for children and the elderly (Vaillant-Ciszewicz et al., 2022). Such solutions enhance community health literacy and comfort with medical services, a key challenge in developing contexts. This presentation proposes a practical methodology for opportunities to expand access to AR/VR healthcare and education tools in low-resource settings through three pathways - utilising low-cost VR headsets, employing inclusive user interface design, and using participatory methodologies during content development. The Educational Design Research (EDR) methodology will guide the project through four main phases (McKenney and Reeves, 2020; Kartoğlu et al., 2020): Analysis and Exploration Phase Conduct a literature review on AR/VR adoption in healthcare education. Engage stakeholders (educators, students, industry partners) through focus groups and interviews. Analyze existing curricula, learning objectives, and assessment practices in healthcare education programs across Australasia. Design and Development Phase Develop design principles and guidelines for creating effective AR/VR experiences in healthcare education. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design and prototype AR/VR experiences aligned with learning objectives and assessment practices. Conduct iterative cycles of prototyping, testing, and refinement with stakeholder feedback. Implementation and Evaluation Phase Implement the developed AR/VR experiences in selected healthcare education programs across Australasia. Evaluate the effectiveness through mixed methods, including quantitative measures of learning outcomes, engagement, and skill development, as well as qualitative analysis of user experiences. Conduct formative evaluations for improvement and refinement. Reflection and Dissemination Phase Analyze and synthesize findings from the implementation and evaluation phases. Refine the design principles and guidelines based on research findings. Develop a comprehensive framework and guidelines for effective AR/VR implementation in healthcare education across Australasia. Disseminate research findings, framework, and guidelines through publications, conferences, workshops, and online resources. The project will apply the principles of EDR, such as interdisciplinary collaboration, contextual adaptation, and iterative refinement, to develop a robust and contextualized solution for AR/VR adoption in healthcare education programs across Australasia.
