Abstract:Intensive anthropogenic activities associated with the food production and consumption system (FPC) drive massive reactive nitrogen inputs to city clusters resulting in serious nitrogen (N) pollution. We conducted a substance flow analysis to examine N flows in the FPC within the Yangtze River Delta city cluster from 2011 to 2019. The total N input and output showed parabolic downward trends, with decreases from 4008.27 to 3472.57 Gg N yr-1 and 3518.65 to 3061.29 Gg N yr-1, respectively; chemical fertilizer (54.7%-57.3%) and N loss (87.1%-90.9%) were the primary components of N input and output, respectively. The decreased total N input was related to reductions in chemical fertilizers and livestock numbers. However, a notable increase in N input to the human subsystem was observed, and urbanization was associated with increased N inputs within the human subsystem via higher amounts of food N consumed per capita and proportions of animal-based food N consumed. Total N loss initially increased then decreased; Nantong, Jiaxing, Shanghai, Yancheng, Taizhou, and Yangzhou were the top six cities in N loss intensity. The proportion of cultivated land area, livestock numbers per unit area, and population density were important factors influencing the spatial heterogeneity of N loss intensity. Twenty-six cities were divided into six groups based on their N loss composition, and various N management strategies were proposed. This study highlights the strong influences of cropland and urbanization on N flows within the FPC, which can be used as a reference for N management at a city cluster scale.

Abstract:The nitrogen (N) cascade in rural areas of Changshu County should be measured and evaluated due to the large increase in anthropogenic disturbances in China's Yangtze Delta. Here, we developed a village-scale N flow model using Changshu County and its towns as a case study. The model included four subsystems and was used to describe the driving forces behind the N cascade from agricultural food production and household consumption to the environment (agriculture-food-environment) system. It was found that from 1998 to 2018 the N input increased from 274.63 to 848.65 kg N ha-1. The cropland N use efficiency (NUEc) decreased by 10.35%, whereas the livestock feed N use efficiency (NUEa) increased by 51.84%. A relatively lower NUE, with a higher N input, was found in Shajiabang Town, which was attributed to hairy crab farming. Changes in dietary patterns led to the food N cost (FNC) being in the range of 4.59-7.74 kg kg-1. Over the past two decades, the N losses from the agriculture-food-environment system decreased by 45.40% from 12,436.60 t N yr-1 (1998). The contribution of the croplands, livestock-breeding, and household consumption to the N losses were 32.44%, 37.78%, and 29.78%, respectively. About 62.83% of the total N losses entered the water environment. Nitrogen emissions from the croplands accounted for 63.21% of the N losses into the atmosphere. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions accounted for 38.50% of the gas emissions, followed by NH3 (28.36%) and N2O (2.81%). The total N losses decreased annually but losses to the water environment increased by 5.10% from 60.16% (1998). The contribution of food production to the total N loss displayed a decreasing trend, while that of food consumption exhibited an increasing trend. Population growth and increased volumes of domestic waste in the Changsu area were the main driving forces for the increased contribution of household food consumption. The significant decline in cropland area and increase in built-up and heavily trafficked areas indicated an overall increase in anthropogenic disturbances, stimulating the N cascade in the Yangtze Delta from 1998 to 2018.

Abstract:With the increases of cropland area and fertilizer nitrogen (N) application rate, general N balance characteristics in regional agroecosystems have been widely documented. However, few studies have quantitatively analyzed the drivers of spatial changes in the N budget. We constructed a mass balance model of the N budget at the soil surface using a database of county-level agricultural statistics to analyze N input, output, and proportional contribution of various factors to the overall N input changes in croplands during 2000-2010 in the Yangtze River Basin, the largest basin and the main agricultural production region in China. Over the period investigated, N input increased by 9%. Of this 87% was from fertilizer N input. In the upper and middle reaches of the basin, the increased synthetic fertilizer N application rate accounted for 84% and 76% of the N input increase, respectively, mainly due to increased N input in the cropland that previously had low synthetic fertilizer N application rate. In lower reaches of the basin, mainly due to urbanization, the decrease in cropland area and synthetic fertilizer N application rate nearly equally contributed to decreases in N input. Quantifying spatial N inputs can provide critical managerial information needed to optimize synthetic fertilizer N application rate and monitor the impacts of urbanization on agricultural production, helping to decrease agricultural environment risk and maintain sustainable agricultural production in different areas.

Abstract:Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have led to increased nitrogen (N) inputs, causing excess N in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) and leading to various environmental issues. Based on the basic statistical data and related parameters of the YRB from 2000 to 2019, an N flow model was characterized using the full nitrogen flow analysis (FNFA) and the emission factor method to analyze the characteristics of N inputs and outputs in the YRB. The results revealed that over the past 20 years, both the total N inputs and outputs in the YRB have shown a significant increasing trend. Specifically, the total N input rose from 12,806.69 to 18,553.42 Gg, while the total output increased from 9250.93 to 12,955.0 Gg. Among the subsystems, the industrial and cropland subsystems were the largest contributors to the N balance, accounting for 28.30% and 26.22% of total N input and 40.48% and 26.23% of total N output, respectively. Overall nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUE) across the subsystems requires improvement, particularly within the cropland subsystem, which exhibited an NUE ranging from 25.67% to 36.10%. In contrast, the livestock subsystem had only half the NUE of the cropland subsystem. High emissions and inefficient N utilization have led to a continuous increase in environmental N loads, particularly in atmospheric N loads. Additionally, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of industrial N revealed that a substantial amount of N was enriched in the atmosphere. These findings provide a scientific basis for regulating N inflow and outflow within watershed areas and for formulating more rational integrated management strategies for N.

Abstract:Anthropogenic inputs of reactive nitrogen (Nr) provide sufficient food, energy, and industrial products to meet human demands; however, only a fraction of Nr is consumed as food and nonfood goods, and the rest is lost to the environment and negatively affects ecosystems. High-resolution studies of nitrogen flows are invaluable to increase nitrogen use efficiencies and reduce environmental emissions. In this study, a comprehensive substance flow analysis of nitrogen for China in 2014 is presented. Based on the conceptual framework, which highlights the key roles of human drivers, the analysis of the synthetic ammonia supply and demand balance shows that 75% of ammonia is used for agricultural purposes. Moreover, the life cycle analysis of food nitrogen shows that human food consumption accounts for approximately 7% of the total Nr inputs. A quantitative analysis of pollutant emissions shows that industrial and crop production are the main sources of atmospheric emissions, while livestock farming and crop production are the main sources of water emissions. Finally, we investigate four scenarios (efficiency improvement, high recycling rate, nitrogen oxide emission reduction, and a combined scenario) and provide relevant policy recommendations (large farm size, standardized agricultural production model, flue gas denitration, etc.) for improving nitrogen management practices.

Abstract:Human activities along the entire food supply-consumption-waste treatment-recycling chain have an essential influence on Nitrogen (N) metabolic features, especially for densely-populated urban agglomeration. A few studies carried out research on detailed analysis and comparison of N flow patterns along the entire food chain among cities, to recognize these influences and accordingly explore effective measures for improving N use efficiencies. In this study, we developed an integrated N flow analysis model to quantify N flows in the food system illustrated by production, processing, consumption, and waste management sectors. Influence of anthropogenic activities on N flow patterns is recognized through comparison among cities and predictions of future scenarios. Using the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region as a case study, we find that (1) in 2016, the annual N import into the production sector in the food system in the PRD region was about 714.5 Gg, among which only 241.6 Gg entered food products. The removal rate of N pollution in all waste stream was about 62.3%, and only 9% of N became resources through reclamation. (2) Among the nine cities in the PRD region, the average amounts of N pollution emission to the air, water, and soil all range from 0.57-5.38 kg cap(-1) yr(-1), showing significant discrepancy among cities. Cities with relatively lower economic development undertake substantial N pollution embedded in their exported agricultural products. (3) Recycling of agricultural waste is the prior N management measure for Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, and Huizhou, while highly urbanized cities should mainly concentrate on recycling of food waste and sewage sludge. We further put forward suggestions such as cross-city resource recycling to realize better N resource recycling and pollution reduction on the whole urban agglomeration scale. Abstract:Nitrogen (N) cycling has been increasingly disturbed by agricultural activities throughout the world and in China as well. By applying a previously developed model, i.e. Eubolism (Elementary Unit based nutrient Balance mOdeLing in agro-ecoSysteM), this study quantified China's agricultural N flows in 2011 and provided a systematic comparison of the environmental performance of the N flows between China and other countries in terms of N balance, productivity, efficiency, recycling, and emissions. The potential of different N management options, including reducing synthetic fertilizer and substituting synthetic fertilizer with organic N resources, to enhance the environmental performance of N flows were also evaluated with the model. China's agricultural N flows are characterized by high input, high output, high surplus, and high dependency on synthetic fertilizer, yet with an internal imbalance between cropland and grassland. The "four highs" characteristics have supported the high productivity of China's agriculture while also caused its low efficiency in N utilization and high N emissions to the environment. Reducing the application of synthetic fertilizer by 30% in China would significantly decrease its soil N surplus and total N emissions without threatening its food security. However, reducing the application of synthetic fertilizer alone has limitations on its effectiveness, and increasing the recycling of organic wastes to substitute synthetic fertilizer has the potential to augment its effectiveness, including more decrease in total N emissions and less loss in N productivity. China is now on the right track to implement integrated N management policies, whereas more ambitious targets and better coordinated actions among government ministries are needed. Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Nitrogen Budgets under Anthropogenic Activities in Metropolitan Areas

Abstract:The rapid growth of metropolitan regions is closely associated with high nitrogen (N) flows, which is known as the most important reason for widespread water pollution. It is, therefore, crucial to explore the spatiotemporal patterns of N budgets under intensive human activity. In this study, we estimated the long-term (2000-2015) N budgets by integrating the net anthropogenic nitrogen input (NANI) and the export coefficient model (ECM) in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA), a typical metropolitan area with strong human disturbances. The results revealed that the NANI decreased by 10% from 2000 to 2015, while N exports showed a 6% increase. Hotspots for N budgets were found in the northeastern areas, where cropland and construction land were dominant. The linear regression showed a close relationship between the NANI and N export, and about 18% of the NANI was exported into the river system. By revealing the critical sources and drivers of N budgets over time, our work aimed to provide effective information for regional policy on nitrogen management. Future strategies, such as improving the fertilizer efficiency, optimizing the land use pattern, and controlling the population density, are necessary in order to address the environmental challenge concerns of excessive N.
Evaluating the anthropogenic nitrogen emissions to water using a hybrid approach in a city cluster: Insights into historical evolution, attribution, and mitigation potential

Abstract:Anthropogenic reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions from agricultural production and food consumption in city clusters have caused water quality degradation and scarcity. In this study, anthropogenic Nr emissions to the water environment were quantitatively evaluated in the Yangtze River Delta city cluster from 2011 to 2020 using coupling nitrogen (N) flow analysis and the grey water footprint (GWF) method. The spatiotemporal characteristics of the GWF and the relative contributions of natural and human factors to the water pollution level (WPL) were analyzed. The results showed that from 2011 to 2020, the total N-related GWF decreased by 12.1 %, mainly driven by reduced fertilizer application and livestock numbers. In 2020, the primary pollution source changed from livestock to humans; however, non-point sources still dominated the GWF. The spatial clustering trend of the GWF was significant: high and low GWF were mainly concentrated in the northeast and southwest regions, respectively. From 2011 to 2020, the mean center of the GWF moved west due to the decrease and increase in the eastern and western regions, respectively, supporting the pollution haven hypothesis. The WPL ranged from 2.67 to 5.03 and fluctuated due to variations in precipitation. The relative contributions of natural and human factors to the WPL evolution were 72.9 % and 27.1 %, respectively. According to the scenario analysis, increasing the N use efficiency to 50 %, manure recycling rate to 80 %, and sewage treatment rate in urban and rural regions to 98 % and 40 %, respectively, could decrease GWF by 39.6 %. The present study establishes an open framework to evaluate anthropogenic N emissions to water, and the outcomes provide valuable references for sustainable N management in city clusters.

Abstract:Excessive nitrogen (N) losses from food production and consumption have resulted in noticeable environmental impacts, e.g., air pollution and climate change, saturation of soil N, and water eutrophication. In the present study, a rural-scale N flow model was constructed in Quzhou county, Hebei province to investigate the characteristics of the N flux, N use efficiency (NUE), and N loss and their driving factors in the food production and consumption system during 1997–2017. Our results show that the N fluxes of the crop-production subsystem (CPS), the livestock-breeding subsystem (LBS), and the household-consumption subsystem (HCS) all followed an upward trend. During 1997–2017, the N losses from the system were high (51.38%), and the CPS was a major source. When the N fertilizer application level was optimal (403–475 kg N ha−1), the NUE in the CPS (NUEc) decreased sharply, resulting in a higher N cost than that observed at larger scales. For the LBS, the NUE of animal feed (NUEa) was high (46.37%); however, the waste utilization rate of the HCS was below 30%. The chemical fertilizer application level, feed input, animal-food demand, and livestock manure application level were closely related to the environmental N losses. Due to the lack of reasonable N treatment and utilization methods, the increasing N losses are expected to have a large future impact on environmental issues such as haze, soil acidification, and frequent algal blooms. Therefore, adjusting N management in the processes of food production and consumption is of great significance to the improvement of global NUE and reduction of environmental pollution.

Abstract:China has experienced rapid agricultural development over recent decades, accompanied by increased fertilizer consumption in croplands; yet, the trend and drivers of the associated nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions remain uncertain. The primary sources of this uncertainty are the coarse spatial variation of activity data and the incomplete model representation of N 2 O emissions in response to agricultural management. Here, we provide new data‐driven estimates of cropland‐N 2 O emissions across China in 1990–2014, compiled using a global cropland‐N 2 O flux observation dataset, nationwide survey‐based reconstruction of N‐fertilization and irrigation, and an updated nonlinear model. In addition, we have evaluated the drivers behind changing cropland‐N 2 O patterns using an index decomposition analysis approach. We find that China's annual cropland‐N 2 O emissions increased on average by 11.2 Gg N/year 2 ( p < .001) from 1990 to 2003, after which emissions plateaued until 2014 (2.8 Gg N/year 2 , p = .02), consistent with the output from an ensemble of process‐based terrestrial biosphere models. The slowdown of the increase in cropland‐N 2 O emissions after 2003 was pervasive across two thirds of China's sowing areas. This change was mainly driven by the nationwide reduction in N‐fertilizer applied per area, partially due to the prevalence of nationwide technological adoptions. This reduction has almost offset the N 2 O emissions induced by policy‐driven expansion of sowing areas, particularly in the Northeast Plain and the lower Yangtze River Basin. Our results underline the importance of high‐resolution activity data and adoption of nonlinear model of N 2 O emission for capturing cropland‐N 2 O emission changes. Improving the representation of policy interventions is also recommended for future projections.
Variations and its driven factors of anthropogenic nitrogen loads in the Yangtze River Economic Belt during 2000–2019

Abstract:Since the millennium, China has economically taken off with rapid urbanization, and anthropogenic nitrogen emission intensity has undergone remarkable changes. To better understand the impact of urbanization on anthropogenic nitrogen, this study calculated the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of anthropogenic nitrogen in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) since 2000, based on the estimation, using obstacle analysis to quantify the driving of industry and agriculture on N growth and using the gray model to analyze the impact of urbanization on N changes. Additionally, using the environmental pressure model to predict the future N load. The results indicated N load in the YREB increased rapidly from 21.4 Tg in 2001 to a peak of 24.5 Tg in 2012 and then decreased to 22.2 Tg in 2019. Although N flux gradually increased from the west to the east of the YREB, the growth rate had an opposite trend with a negative growth in the eastern region. Hotspots are mainly concentrated in urban agglomerations, which contributed to ~ 60% N load of the YREB, and the YREB contributed to ~ 90% N load of the Yangtze River Basin. Obstacle degree scores indicated wastewater was a major industrial driver of N growth before 2010, and then became waste gas; increased mechanization and fertilizer control effectively reduced nitrogen emissions during agricultural development. The gray analysis of urbanization indicated urban population, industry, and services had the strongest correlation with N load changes. Scenario simulations suggest N loads of the YREB remain at a high level by 2030; however, there are still opportunities to effectively control N growth through high technological innovation and reducing the proportion of industry under an enormous population. This research contributes to a better understanding of the impact of urbanization on anthropogenic nitrogen and helps developing countries to precisely control nitrogen hotspots and sources.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) runoff loss from croplands due to excessive anthropogenic N additions is a principal cause of non-point source water pollution worldwide. Quantitative knowledge of regional-scale N runoff loss from croplands is essential for developing sustainable agricultural N management and efficient water N pollution control strategies. This meta-analysis quantifies N runoff loss rates and identifies the primary factors regulating N runoff loss from uplands (n = 570) and paddy (n = 434) fields in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB). Results indicated that total N (TN) runoff loss rates from uplands and paddy fields consistently increased from upstream to downstream regions. Runoff depth, soil N content and fertilizer addition rate (chemical fertilizer + manure) were the major factors regulating variability of TN runoff loss from uplands, while runoff depth and fertilizer addition rate were the main controls for paddy fields. Multiple regression models incorporating these influencing factors effectively predicted TN runoff loss rates from uplands (calibration: R2 = 0.60, n = 242; validation: R2 = 0.55, n = 104) and paddy fields (calibration: R2 = 0.70, n = 189; validation: R2 = 0.85, n = 82). Models estimated total cropland TN runoff loss load in YRB of 0.54 (95% Cl: 0.23-1.33) Tg, with 0.30 (95% Cl: 0.15-0.56) Tg from uplands and 0.24 (95% Cl: 0.08-0.77) Tg from paddy fields in 2017. Guangxi, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan and Henan provinces within the YRB were identified as cropland TN runoff loss hotspots. Models predicted that TN runoff loss loads from croplands in YRB would decrease by 0.8-13.7% for five scenarios, with higher TN load reductions occurring from scenarios with decreased runoff amounts. Reducing upland TN runoff loss should focus primarily on soil N utilization and runoff management, while reducing N fertilizer addition and runoff provided the most sensitive strategies for paddy fields. Integrated management of water, soil and fertilizer is required to effectively reduce cropland N runoff loss.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) plays a central role in livestock development and food production in agricultural and pastoral regions, while its flow and loss can affect environmental quality, biodiversity and human health. A comprehensive understanding of the sources, patterns and drivers of N flow helps to alleviate its negative effects and promote sustainable management. We developed a county-scale N flow model to quantitatively analyze the N use efficiency (NUE), N losses and their driving forces in the food production and consumption system (FCPS) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). More sustainable N utilization was further investigated through scenario analyses. Our results revealed that N fluxes doubled from 1998 to 2018 to maintain the growing demands for human food production and consumption in Ledu County, which was related to the increasing N losses to the atmosphere and water environment. The surging N fluxes greatly changed the N distribution pattern, resulting in a relatively low NUE (mean value: 29.41%) in the crop-production subsystem (CPS) and a relatively high NUE (mean value: 23.50%) in the livestock-breeding subsystem (LBS). The CPS contributed the most to the N losses. The urban population, animal-derived consumption, crop planting structure, imported fodder and N fertilizer application level were closely associated with N losses. The scenario analysis indicated that combined reasonable changes in planting structure, precision animal feeding, fertilizer management, diets and conversion of cropland into pasture could reduce N losses in 2030 to 5%-61% of Business as usual level. Our results highlighted the strong anthropogenic impact on the N flow of food production and consumption and suggested a sustainable N flow management strategy to harmonize the relationship between N flow and anthropogenically driven factors on the QTP.

Abstract:The net anthropogenic nitrogen input (NANI) is an important nutrient source that causes eutrophication in water bodies. Understanding the spatio-temporal variation of NANI is important for regional environment assessment and management. This paper calculated NANI in the upper Yangtze River basin (YRB), upstream of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), from 1990 to 2012, and analyzed its spatio-temporal characteristics. Over the past 23 years of the study, the average annual NANI increased from 3200 kg N km−2 to 4931 kg N km−2. The major components were fertilizer N application, atmospheric N deposition, and net food and feed N import. In the northwest high mountainous region with a sparse population, the main component was atmospheric N deposition. Fertilizer N application and net food and feed N import were concentrated in the Chengdu Plain because of the high population density and large areas of farmland. This research found that NANI increased with rapid urbanization and increasing population. The Pearson correlation results illustrated that the spatial distributions of NANI and its major components were affected by land cover/use, agricultural GDP and total population. Increasing NANI has been the major cause of the degrading stream water quality over the past 20 years and is becoming a major threat to the water quality of the TGD reservoir.

Abstract:This study developed a comprehensive nitrogen (N) flow model utilizing localized data in 2000–2019. Enhancements were conducted upon previous models: (1) variations in feed N intake of cows across different production phases was considered; (2) N emission in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the European Monitoring and Evaluation Program and the European Environment Agency (EMEP/EEA) was incorporated; (3) emission factor (EF) of NH 3 was corrected based on local climate; and (4) field application of manure was excluded from the system boundary to accommodate China's production status. The effects of farm scale (LF, ≥100 heads; SF, 56 %). Sensitivity analysis indicated that NUE was mostly influenced by LF milk protein content, followed by milk production, body weight of dairy cow, and herd structure. Different forms of N emission were substantially decided by manure EFs and indoor excretion ratio. The scenario simulation suggested that the use of productive breed, low-protein feed, and N abatement procedures could enhance NUE by >30 % and reduce annual emission of NH 3 and N 2 O to 38 % and 13 % of BAU. The study may provide valuable insights into the policy development of dairy industry in China, aiming at boosting productivity improvement and minimizing N loss.

Abstract:Reactive nitrogen (Nr) is an indispensable material for food production. However, it may cause serious envi-ronmental problems. The enhancement of nitrogen management in the food supply chain is an effective way to reduce Nr loss and increase Nr use efficiency. While Nr flows in association with the food chain have synergy in a mega-region, in-depth investigations at a cross-regional scale have remained relatively undocumented. This study developed a food-related Nr flow model based on a material flow analysis for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH) during the years 1978-2017. A multi-regional input-output method was applied to investigate the Nr emissions embodied in the transboundary food supply. The results showed that the total Nr emissions from the food system during the years 1978-2017 in the BTH region increased until 2004 and subsequently decreased gradually. In 2017, Beijing exhibited the lowest Nr emissions per capita (2.3 kg N/cap) and per land use (3089 kg N/km(2)), while Hebei and Tianjin demonstrated the greatest Nr emissions intensity by capita (13.6 kg N/cap) and by land use (6392 kg N/km(2)), respectively. While farming and livestock husbandry dominated the regional Nr emissions (i.e., responsible for 90% of the total in 2017), food consumption and waste management have had an increasingly substantial role, as their shared percentage in the total increased by 22% over the study period. Nr emissions resulting from the inner-transboundary food supply chain decreased by 81% between 2012 and 2015 but dramatically increased by 231% between 2015 and 2017. This rebound effect partially resulted from the implementation of coordinated development planning for the BTH region in 2015. This study can facilitate the efficient regulation of regional nitrogen flows and the desired transition of food supply chain.

Abstract:Human has greatly disturbed nitrogen (N) cycles through the food production and consumption (FPC) activities, which caused serious environmental consequences. A few studies address the pathways of N cycles to clarify the interrelationships between human activities and the altered N cycles, especially in terms of the spatial aspects of N flows, which are also influenced by natural factors. Here, we developed an integrated model to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of N flows within the FPC and applied it to the Chaohu Watershed from 1949 to 2012. We found that total N inputs into the FPC increased by 6-fold during 1949-2012, while N inputs from chemical fertilizer had the largest increase, with an annual growth rate of 8.6%. N generation in manure doubled, but the recycling rate decreased by 50% in the study period. The total N losses increased from 17 to 130 Gg-N/yr between 1949 and 2012. Annually, similar to 7% of total N losses was discharged into surface water annually, which peaked at 95 Gg-N/yr during 1998-2003, two times as that in the early 1980s when algae blooms first occurred in Chaohu lake. Spatially, around one-fifth of the catchment area was responsible for all of N losses to surface water. These intensive areas located in the eastern and southern-central regions, which were identified as the critical areas for priority N mitigation. This study provided a method to depict spatiotemporal patterns of regional N flows for identifying the critical sources and areas of N pollution for precision watershed management. Spatial Planning Needed to Drastically Reduce Nitrogen and Phosphorus Surpluses in China’s Agriculture

Abstract:China's fertilization practices contribute greatly to the global biogeochemical nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) flows, which have exceeded the safe-operating space. Here, we quantified the potentials of improved nutrient management in the food chain and spatial planning of livestock farms on nutrient use efficiency and losses in China, using a nutrient flow model and detailed information on >2300 counties. Annual fertilizer use could be reduced by 26 Tg N and 6.4 Tg P following improved nutrient management. This reduction N and P fertilizer use would contribute 30% and 80% of the required global reduction, needed to keep the biogeochemical N and P flows within the planetary boundary. However, there are various barriers to make this happen. A major barrier is the transportation cost due to the uneven distributions of crop land, livestock, and people within the country. The amounts of N and P in wastes and residues are larger than the N and P demand of the crops grown in 30% and 50% of the counties, respectively.
