Abstract:The progression of game theory from classical to evolutionary and spatial games provided a powerful means to study cooperation, and enabled a better understanding of general cooperation-promoting mechanisms. However, current standard models assume that at any given point players must choose either cooperation or defection, meaning that regardless of the spatial structure in which they exist, they cannot differentiate between their neighbours and adjust their behaviour accordingly. This is at odds with interactions among organisms in nature who are well capable of behaving differently towards different members of their communities. We account for this natural fact by introducing a new type of player—dubbed link players—who can adjust their behaviour to each individual neighbour. This is in contrast to more common node players whose behaviour affects all neighbours in the same way. We proceed to study cooperation in pure and mixed populations, showing that cooperation peaks at moderately low densities of link players. In such conditions, players naturally specialize in different roles. Node players tend to be either cooperators or defectors, while link players form social insulation between cooperative and defecting clusters by acting both as cooperators and defectors. Such fairly complex processes emerging from a simple model reflect some of the complexities observed in experimental studies on social behaviour in microbes and pave a way for the development of richer game models.

Abstract:A multi-agent system (MAS) that composed of multiple interacting intelligent agents can be used to solve problems which are difficult or impossible for an individual agent or monolithic system to solve. Since the agent is autonomous and intelligent, it is reasonable to assume that it choice the behavior to bring itself the maximal benefit. Thus, the cooperation and coordination can be achieved successfully if we can wisely design the utility function for every agent so that every agent can get the maximal reward from the cooperation to accomplish a given task. However, the utility function of one agent usually involves those of others for most “real-world” cooperation needed tasks. Moreover, it is not uncommon that the conflicts between the gains of these agents arise. In other words, the individual optimality is not always consistent with collective optimality in MAS. These conflicts will reduce the collective utility if there is no coordination among these decentralized, autonomous agents. This paper addresses the essential that in MAS the action of one agent may influence the action of others and there usually be conflicts among the payoff of one another. We investigated the optimal coordination approach for multi-agent foraging, a typical MAS task, from the point view of game theory. After introduced several concepts, we built the equivalence between the optimal solution of MAS and the equilibrium of the game corresponding to that situation, and then we introduced evolutionarily stable strategy into the approach hope that it maybe be of service in addressing the equilibrium selection problem of traditional game theory. Finally, based on the hawk-dove game model, an evolutionarily cooperation foraging algorithm (ECFA) is proposed to evolve a stable evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) and bring the maximal reward for the group. If there be some change in the configuration of the environment, ECFA can, then, evolve to the new ESS automatically. And we also proposed a reinforcement factor to accelerate the convergence process of ECFA and thus make a new algorithm Accelerated ECFA (AECFA). These techniques were shown to be successful by the multi-agent foraging simulations.

Abstract:The optimal solution for the cooperation win-win task for Multi-agent system (MAS) was studied and a automatic negotiation reciprocal mechanism was build in this paper for the typical case of multi- agent foraging. The equivalences between agent in MAS and player in game theory, optimal solution in MAS and equilibrium in game theory, and cooperation task in MAS and multi-stage Markov game were then established. To the difficulties of equilibriums selection, a hawk dove game model, which is a uncorrelated asymmetry game, is build from the point view of evolutionary game theory. And a self-enforcing cooperative algorithm based on replicator dynamic was proposed to find the evolutionary stable strategy of hawk dove game. The simulation verified the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Situations involving cooperative behaviour are widespread among animals and humans alike. Game theory and evolutionary dynamics have provided the theoretical and computational grounds to understand what are the mechanisms that allow for such cooperation. Studies in this area usually take into consideration different behavioural strategies and investigate how they can be fixed in the population under evolving rules. However, how those strategies emerged from basic evolutionary mechanisms continues to be not fully understood. To address this issue, here we study the emergence of cooperative strategies through a model of heuristics selection based on evolutionary algorithms. In the proposed model, agents interact with other players according to a heuristic specified by their genetic code and reproduce -- at a longer time scale -- proportionally to their fitness. We show that the system can evolve to cooperative regimes for low mutation rates through heuristics selection while increasing the mutation decreases the level of cooperation. Our analysis of possible strategies shows that reciprocity and punishment are the main ingredients for cooperation to emerge, being conditional cooperation the more frequent strategy. Additionally, we show that if in addition to behavioural rules, genetic relatedness is included, then kinship plays a relevant role. Our results illustrate that our evolutionary heuristics model is a generic and powerful tool to study the evolution of cooperative behaviour.

Abstract:In biology, evolutionary game-theoretical models often arise in which players' strategies impact the state of the environment, driving feedback between strategy and the surroundings. In this case, cooperative interactions can be applied to studying ecological systems, animal or microorganism populations, and cells producing or actively extracting a growth resource from their environment. We consider the framework of eco-evolutionary game theory with replicator dynamics and growth-limiting public goods extracted by population members from some external source. It is known that the two sub-populations of cooperators and defectors can develop spatio-temporal patterns that enable long-term coexistence in the shared environment. To investigate this phenomenon and unveil the mechanisms that sustain cooperation, we analyze two eco-evolutionary models: a well-mixed environment and a heterogeneous model with spatial diffusion. In the latter, we integrate spatial diffusion into replicator dynamics. Our findings reveal rich strategy dynamics, including bistability and bifurcations, in the temporal system and spatial stability, as well as Turing instability, Turing–Hopf bifurcations, and chaos in the diffusion system. The results indicate that effective mechanisms to promote cooperation include increasing the player density, decreasing the relative timescale, controlling the density of initial cooperators, improving the diffusion rate of the public goods, lowering the diffusion rate of the cooperators, and enhancing the payoffs to the cooperators. We provide the conditions for the existence, stability, and occurrence of bifurcations in both systems. Our analysis can be applied to dynamic phenomena in fields as diverse as human decision-making, microorganism growth factors secretion, and group hunting.

Abstract:Coordinated decision making and actions have become the primary solution for the overexploitation of interacting resources within ecosystems. However, the success of coordinated management is highly sensitive to biological, economic, and social conditions. Here, using a game theoretic framework and a 2-species model that considers various biological relationships (competition, predation, and mutualism), we compute cooperative (or joint) and non-cooperative (or separate) management equilibrium outcomes of the model and investigate the effects of the type and strength of the relationships. We find that cooperation does not always show superiority to non-cooperation in all biological interactions: (1) if and only if resources are involved in high-intensity predation relationships, cooperation can achieve a win-win scenario for ecosystem services and resource diversity; (2) for competitive resources, cooperation realizes higher ecosystem services by sacrificing resource diversity; and (3) for mutual resources, cooperation has no obvious advantage for either ecosystem services or resource evenness but can slightly improve resource abundance. Furthermore, by using a fishery model of the North California Current Marine Ecosystem with 63 species and seven fleets, we demonstrate that the theoretical results can be reproduced in real ecosystems. Therefore, effective ecosystem management should consider the interconnection between stakeholders’ social relationship and resources’ biological relationships.
Coevolutionary game dynamics with localized environmental resource feedback

Abstract:Dynamic environments shape diverse dynamics in evolutionary game systems. We introduce spatial heterogeneity of resources into the Prisoner's Dilemma Game model to explore the co-evolution of individuals' strategies and environmental resources. The adequacy of resources significantly affects the survival competitiveness of surrounding individuals. Feedback between individuals' strategies and the resources they can use leads to the dynamic of the "oscillatory tragedy of the commons". Our findings indicate that when the influence of individuals' strategies on the update rate of resources is significantly high, individuals can form sustained spatial clustered patterns. These sustained patterns can directly trigger a transition in the system from the persistent periodic oscillating state to an equilibrium state. These findings align with observed phenomena in real ecosystems, where organisms organize their spatial structures to maintain system stability. We discuss critical phenomena in detail, demonstrating that the aforementioned phase transition is robust across various system parameters including: the strength of cooperators in restoring the environment, the initial distributions of cooperators, and noise.

Abstract:In evolutionary game, aspiration-driven updates and imitation updates are the two dominant game models, and individual behavior patterns are mainly categorized into two types: node player and link player. In more recent studies, the mixture strategy of different types of players has been proven to improve cooperation substantially. Motivated by such a co-evolution mechanism, we combine aspiration dynamics with individual behavioral diversity, where self-assessed aspirations are used to update imitation strategies. In this study, the node players and the link players are capable to transform into each other autonomously, which introduces new features to cooperation in a diverse population as well. In addition, by driving all the players to form specific behavior patterns, the proposed mechanism achieves a survival environment optimization of the cooperators. As expected, the interaction between node players and link players allows the cooperator to avoid the invasion of the defector. Based on the experimental evaluation, the proposed work has demonstrated that the co-evolution mechanism has facilitated the emergence of cooperation by featuring mutual transformation between different players. We hope to inspire a new way of thinking for a promising solution to social dilemmas.

Abstract:The emergence of collective cooperation in competitive environments is a well-known phenomenon in biology, economics, and social systems. While most evolutionary game models focus on the evolution of strategies for a fixed game, how strategic decisions coevolve with the environment has so far mostly been overlooked. Here, we consider a game selection model where not only the strategies but also the game can change over time following evolutionary principles. Our results show that coevolutionary dynamics of games and strategies can induce novel collective phenomena, fostering the emergence of cooperative environments. When the model is taken on structured populations the architecture of the interaction network can significantly amplify pro-social behavior, with a critical role played by network heterogeneity and the presence of clustered groups of similar players, distinctive features observed in real-world populations. By unveiling the link between the evolution of strategies and games for different structured populations, our model sheds new light on the origin of social dilemmas ubiquitously observed in real-world social systems.

Abstract:Abstract Eco-evolutionary game dynamics which characterizes the mutual interactions and the coupled evolutions of strategies and environments has been of growing interest in very recent years. Since such feedback loops widely exist in a range of coevolutionary systems, such as microbial systems, social-ecological systems and psychological-economic systems, recent modeling frameworks that unveil the oscillating dynamics of social dilemmas have great potential for practical applications. In this perspective paper, we overview the latest progress of evolutionary game theory in this direction. We describe both mathematical methods and interdisciplinary applications across different fields. The ideas worthy of further consideration are discussed in prospects, with the central role of promoting cooperations in a changing world.

Abstract:As evidenced by many cases in human societies, individuals often make different behavior decisions in different interactions, and adaptively adjust their behavior in changeable interactive scenarios. However, up to now, how such diverse interactive behavior affects cooperation dynamics has still remained unknown. Here we develop a general framework of interactive diversity, which models individuals' separated behavior against distinct opponents and their adaptive adjustment in response to opponents' strategies, to explore the evolution of cooperation. We find that interactive diversity enables individuals to reciprocate every single opponent, and thus sustains large-scale reciprocal interactions. Our work witnesses an impressive boost of cooperation for a notably extensive range of parameters and for all pairwise games. These results are robust against well-mixed and various networked populations, and against degree-normalized and cumulative payoff patterns. From the perspective of network dynamics, distinguished from individuals competing for nodes in most previous work, in this paper, the system evolves in the form of behavior disseminating along edges. We propose a theoretical method based on evolution of edges, which predicts well both the frequency of cooperation and the compact cooperation clusters. Our thorough investigation clarifies the positive role of interactive diversity in resolving social dilemmas and highlights the significance of understanding evolutionary dynamics from the viewpoint of edge dynamics.
The coupling effect between the environment and strategies drives the emergence of group cooperation

Abstract:Introducing environmental feedback into evolutionary game theory has led to the development of eco-evolutionary games, which have gained popularity due to their ability to capture the intricate interplay between the environment and decision-making processes. However, current researches in this field focus on the study to macroscopic evolutionary dynamics in infinite populations. In this study, we propose a multi-agent computational model based on reinforcement learning to explore the coupled dynamics between strategies and the environment in finite populations from a bottom-up perspective. Our findings indicate that even in environments that favor defectors, high levels of group cooperation can emerge from self-interested individuals, highlighting the significant role of the coupling effect between the environment and strategies. Over time, the higher payoff of defection can be diluted due to environmental degradation, while cooperation can become the dominant strategy when positively reinforced by the environment. Remarkably, individuals can accurately detect the inflection point of the environment solely through rewards, when a reinforcing positive feedback loop are triggered, resulting in a rapid increase in agents' rewards and facilitating the establishment and maintenance of group cooperation. Our research provides a fresh perspective on understanding the emergence of group cooperation and sheds light on the underlying mechanisms involving individuals and the environment.

Abstract:Multi-agent cooperation problem is a fundamental issue in the coordination control field. Individuals achieve a common task through association with others or division of labor. Evolutionary game dynamics offers a basic framework to investigate how agents self-adaptively switch their strategies in accordance with various targets, and also the evolution of their behaviors. In this paper, we analytically study the strategy evolution in a multiple player game model driven by self-learning. Self-learning dynamics is of importance for agent strategy updating yet seldom analytically addressed before. It is based on self-evaluation, which applies to distributed control. We focus on the abundance of different strategies (behaviors of agents) and their oscillation (frequency of behavior switching). We arrive at the condition under which a strategy is more abundant over the other under weak selection limit. Such condition holds for any finite population size of N ≥ 3, thus it fits for the systems with finite agents, which has notable advantage over that of pairwise comparison process. At certain states of evolutionary stable state, there exists “ping-pong effect” with stable frequency, which is not affected by aspirations. Our results indicate that self-learning dynamics of multi-player games has special characters. Compared with pairwise comparison dynamics and Moran process, it shows different effect on strategy evolution, such as promoting cooperation in collective risk games with large threshold.

Abstract:Dynamics of a social population is analyzed taking into account some physical constraints on individual behavior and decision making abilities. The model, based on Evolutionary Game Theory, predicts that a population has to pass through a series of different games, e.g as a consequence of environmental fluctuations, in order to develop social cooperation and communication skills. It differs from the general assumption that evolution of cooperation, the so called Cooperation Paradox, can be explained by a single set of rules for intra-population competitions. The developed methods, potentially, have a practical value for some learning optimization problems in multiagent, e.g. corporate, environment.

Abstract:Interactive identity and interactive diversity are generally regarded as two typical interaction patterns in living systems. The former describes that in each generation every individual behaves identically to all of its opponents, and the latter allows each individual to behave diversely to its distinct opponents. Most traditional research on the evolution of cooperation, however, has been confined to populations with a uniform interaction pattern. Here we study the cooperation conundrum in a diverse population comprising players with interactive identity and with interactive diversity. We find that in homogeneous networks a small fraction of players taking interactive diversity are enough to stabilize cooperation for a wide range of payoff values even in a noisy environment. When assigned to heterogeneous networks, players in high-degree nodes taking interactive diversity significantly strengthen systems' resilience against the shifty environment and enlarge the survival region of cooperation. However, they fail to establish a homogeneous strategy 'cloud' in the neighborhood and thus can not coordinate players in low-degree nodes to reach a socially optimal cooperation level. The most favorable outcome emerges when players in high-degree nodes take interactive identity and meanwhile others adopt interactive diversity. Our findings reveal the significance of the two typical interaction patterns and could be a good heuristic in coordinating them to achieve the social optimum in cooperation.

Abstract:Understanding origin of cooperation denotes one of the most challenging conundrums across myriad disciplines. Different from previous assumption that all the individuals have identical dilemma, here we put forward a heterogeneous sub-population model on regular lattices and complex networks: players face different dilemmas and cooperation tendency inside and outside sub-population. In details, each agent will play different games with the opponents from his own sub-population or from a different sub-population. By means of numerous simulations, we find that sub-population is a useful way to resolve social dilemmas, which is universally effective for interaction topology. Interestingly, less sub-populations can guarantee the optimal environment of cooperation, the continuous increment of sub-population number in turn impedes the evolution of cooperation, which though seems better than the traditional scenario (namely, pure prisoner's dilemma or snowdrift game on network). Moreover, the fraction of cooperation also depends on the related scale of such sub-populations. From the viewpoint of microscopic dynamics, we further explore the transition probability of different strategies and the organization of cooperator clusters. Because this framework of heterogeneous sub-populations is close to realistic life, we hope that it can provide new insight to resolve the social dilemmas.
Evolutionary dynamics in stochastic nonlinear public goods games

Abstract:Understanding the evolution of cooperation in multiplayer games is of vital significance for natural and social systems. An important challenge is that group interactions often leads to nonlinear synergistic effects. However, previous models mainly focus on deterministic nonlinearity where the arise of synergy or discounting effect is determined by certain conditions, ignoring uncertainty and stochasticity in real-world systems. Here, we develop a probabilistic framework to study the cooperative behavior in stochastic nonlinear public goods games. Through both analytical treatment and Monte Carlo simulations, we provide comprehensive understanding of social dilemmas with stochastic nonlinearity in both well-mixed and structured populations. We find that increasing the degree of nonlinearity makes synergy more advantageous when competing with discounting, thereby promoting cooperation. Interestingly, we show that network reciprocity loses effectiveness when the probability of synergy is small. Moreover, group size exhibits nonlinear effects on group cooperation regardless of the underlying structure. Our findings thus provide novel insights into how stochastic nonlinearity influences the emergence of prosocial behavior.

Abstract:Evolutionary graph theory is a well established framework for modelling the evolution of social behaviours in structured populations. An emerging consensus in this field is that graphs that exhibit heterogeneity in the number of connections between individuals are more conducive to the spread of cooperative behaviours. In this article we show that such a conclusion largely depends on the individual-level interactions that take place. In particular, averaging payoffs garnered through game interactions rather than accumulating the payoffs can altogether remove the cooperative advantage of heterogeneous graphs while such a difference does not affect the outcome on homogeneous structures. In addition, the rate at which game interactions occur can alter the evolutionary outcome. Less interactions allow heterogeneous graphs to support more cooperation than homogeneous graphs, while higher rates of interactions make homogeneous and heterogeneous graphs virtually indistinguishable in their ability to support cooperation. Most importantly, we show that common measures of evolutionary advantage used in homogeneous populations, such as a comparison of the fixation probability of a rare mutant to that of the resident type, are no longer valid in heterogeneous populations. Heterogeneity causes a bias in where mutations occur in the population which affects the mutant's fixation probability. We derive the appropriate measures for heterogeneous populations that account for this bias.

Evolution of cooperation with the diversity of cooperation tendencies

Abstract:The complete cooperation and the complete defection are two typical strategies considered in evolutionary games in many previous works. However, in real life, strategies of individuals are full of variety rather than only two complete ones. In this work, the diversity of strategies is introduced into the weak prisoners' dilemma game, which is measured by the diversity of the cooperation tendency. A higher diversity means more cooperation tendencies are provided. The complete cooperation strategy is the full cooperation tendency and the complete defection strategy is without any cooperation tendency. Agents with other cooperation tendencies behave as partial cooperators and as partial defectors simultaneously. The numerical simulation shows that increasing the diversity of the cooperation tendency promotes the cooperation level, not only the number of cooperators but also the average tendency over the whole population, until the diversity reaches its saturated value. Furthermore, our work points out maintaining cooperation is based on the cooperation efficiency approximating to the reward of cooperators and that the cooperation efficiency oscillates and quickly decreases to zero when cooperator clusters cannot resist the invasion of defectors. When the effect of the noise for the Femi update mechanism is considered, a higher diversity of strategies not only improves the cooperation level of the whole population but also supports the survival of more rational agents.

Interactive Diversity Promotes the Evolution of Cooperation in Structured Populations

Abstract:Evolutionary games on networks traditionally assume that each individual adopts an identical strategy to interact with all its neighbors in each generation. Considering the prevalent diversity of individual interactions in the real society, here we propose the concept of interactive diversity, which allows individuals to adopt different strategies against different neighbors in each generation. We investigate the evolution of cooperation based on the edge dynamics rather than the traditional nodal dynamics in networked systems. The results show that, without invoking any other mechanisms, interactive diversity drives the frequency of cooperation to a high level for a wide range of parameters in both well-mixed and structured populations. Even in highly connected populations, cooperation still thrives. When interactive diversity and large topological heterogeneity are combined together, however, in the relaxed social dilemma, cooperation level is lower than that with just one of them, implying that the combination of many promotive factors may make a worse outcome. By an analytical approximation, we get the condition under which interactive diversity provides more advantages for cooperation than traditional evolutionary dynamics does. Numerical simulations validating the approximation are also presented. Our work provides a new line to explore the latent relation between the ubiquitous cooperation and individuals' distinct responses in different interactions. The presented results suggest that interactive diversity should receive more attention in pursuing mechanisms fostering cooperation.
