Abstract:The discharge of rare earth element (REE) tailings wastewater results in serious ecological deterioration and health risk, due to high ammonia nitrogen, and strong acidity. The low C/N ratio makes it recalcitrant to biodegradation. Recently it has been shown that microalgal technology has a promising potential for the simultaneous harsh wastewater treatment and resource recovery. However, the low nitrogen removal rate and less biomass of microalgae restricted its development. In this work, Chlorococcum sp. was successfully isolated from the rare earth mine effluent. The microalgae was capable of enhancing nitrogen contaminants removal from REEs wastewater due to the carbonate addition, which simulated the activity increase of carbonic anhydrase (CA). The total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal rate reached 4.45 mg/L h−1, which compared to other microalgal species, the nitrogen removal rate and biomass yield were 7.8- and 4.9-fold higher, respectively. Notably, high lipid contents (mainly triglycerides, 43.85% of dry weight) and a high biomass yield were obtained. Meanwhile, the microalgae had an excellent settleability attributed to higher extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) formation, leading to easier resource harvest. These results were further confirmed in a continuous-flow photobioreactor with a stable operation for more than 30 days, indicating its potential for application.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to establish a practical approach to remove ammonium nitrogen of rare earth elements (REEs) wastewater by an indigenous photoautotrophic microalga. Firstly, a new microalgal strain was successfully isolated from REEs wastewater and identified as Chlamydomonas sp. (named Chlamydomonas sp. YC). The obtained results showed that microalga could completely remove the NH4+-N of 10% REEs wastewater after 10 days of cultivation; however, the highest NH4+-N removal rate was attained by microalga to treat undiluted REEs wastewater. Then, three cultivation modes including batch, semi-continuous and continuous cultivation methods were developed to evaluate the ability of NH4+-N removal rate by this microalga to treat diluted (10%) and undiluted REEs wastewater. It was found that, Chlamydomonas sp. YC exhibited superior performance towards NH4+-N removal rates (32.75–61.05 mg/(L·d)) by semi-continuous and continuous processes for the treatments of 10% and undiluted REEs wastewater in comparison to the results (19.50–30.38 mg/(L·d) by batch process. Interestingly, under the same treatment conditions, among the three cultivation modes, microalga exhibited the highest removal rates of NH4+-N in undiluted REEs wastewater by semi-continuous (61.05 mg/(L·d)) and continuous (57.10 mg/(L·d) processes. In term of the biochemical analysis, microalgal biomass obtained from the wastewater treatment had 35.40–44.40% carbohydrate and 4.97–6.03% lipid, which could be potential ingredients for sustainable biofuels production. And the highest carbohydrate and lipid productivities attained by Chlamydomonas sp. YC in the continuous mode were 226.36 mg/(L·d) and 32.98 mg/(L·d), respectively. Taken together, the established processes mediated with Chlamydomonas sp. YC via continuous cultivation was the great promising approaches to efficiently remove NH4+-N of REEs wastewater and produce valuable biomass for sustainable and renewable biofuels in a simultaneous manner.

Abstract:Microalgae appear to be a promising and ecologically safe way for nutrients removal from rare earth tailings (REEs) wastewater with CO 2 fixation and added benefits of resource recovery and recycling. In this study, a pilot scale (50 L) co-flocculating microalgae photobioreactor (Ma-PBR) as constructed and operated for 140 days to treat REEs wastewater with low C/N ratio of 0.51–0.56. The removal rate of ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) reached 88.04% and the effluent residual concentration was as low as 9.91 mg/L that have met the Emission Standards of Pollutants from Rare Earths Industry (GB 26451–2011). Timely supplementation of trace elements was necessary to maintain the activity of microalgae and then prolonged the operation time. The dominant phyla in co-flocculating microalgae was Chlorophyta , the relative abundance of which was higher than 80%. Tetradesmus belonging to Chlorophyceae was the dominant genus with relative abundance of 80.35% The results provided a practical support for the scaling-up of Ma-PBR to treat REEs wastewater.

Abstract:This work was the first time to establish the desired approach with two heterotrophic Chlorella species for ammonium sulfate (AS)-rich rare earth elements (REEs) wastewater treatment by heterotrophic cultivation. The results showed that these two Chlorella species treated by 6 g/L CaCO3 performed the best ability to remove NH4+-N and SO42- of REEs wastewater. Moreover, the established process performed similar features in REEs wastewater treatment by replacing CaCO3 with eggshell powder (ESP) and oyster shell powder (OSP) enriched in CaCO3. Furthermore, microalgae treated by ESP/OSP in a 10-L fermenter showed 837.39 mg/(L·d) NH4+-N and 1,820 mg/(L·d) SO42- removal rates. The developed kinetic models could be well fitted to the experimental data obtained by the 10-L fermenter. Taken together, the established process mediated with two Chlorella species and ESP/OSP by heterotrophic cultivation was the great potential for AS-rich REEs wastewater treatment in a cost-effective manner.
Self-flocculating Spirulina platensis CMB-02 to efficiently treat ammonia nitrogen of rare earth elements wastewater

Abstract:The study aimed to evaluate the cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis CMB-02 (S. platensis CMB-02) with self-flocculation properties to treat the ammonia nitrogen of rare earth elements (REEs) wastewater. The results demonstrated that S. platensis CMB-02 could effectively remove total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and total inorganic nitrogen within 5 days. Simultaneously, a self-flocculation efficiency of 82.59 % was achieved by microalga in 30 min after wastewater treatment. The pH, tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS), and cell morphology of S. platensis CMB-02 were identified as key factors influencing its self-flocculation capabilities. Moreover, the established semi-continuous process with a 20 % renewal rate showed a stable treatment effect, representing a TAN degradation rate of 10.9 mg/(L·d). These obtained findings could conclude that the developed approach mediated with self-flocculating S. platensis CMB-02 was a promising way for REEs wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, a novel oscillating membrane (OM) photoreactor combined with salt-tolerated Chlorella was developed for old landfill leachates treatment, in which harvesting of highly-active algae was easily performed on large scale. Compared with control membrane photo-bioreactor (CMPBR), OM-MPBR exhibited excellent NH3-N removal efficiency as high as 94.0%. With light time prolonged, an increase in biomass production and NH3 removal rates was observed due to more energy provided for Chlorella cells. By comparison, it was found the highest membrane flux (99.6 L/m(2) h bar) was obtained in OM-MPBR, which was attributed to strong shear stress on interface of liquid/membrane effectively reducing bio-foulants. It was clear that energy consumptions of OMMPBR on biomass productivity (0.68 kWh/kg cell) and NH3 removal (0.0151 kWh/kg NH3-N) were lower than CMPBR. The new coupling system opens a door to scalable development of promising and economical MBR for environmental pollution control and biomass energy production.

Abstract:This work evaluated the performance of real rare earth elements (REEs) wastewater purification and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) fixation by an Chlamydomonas sp. YC with pilot-scale airlift-photobioreactors (AL-PBRs), tubular photobioreactors (TB-PBRs) and raceway ponds (ORWPs) under high-temperature outdoor conditions in summer. The obtained results showed that Chlamydomonas sp. YC at 1 g/L oyster shell piece (OSP) and 3% CO 2 had the highest biomass (1.9 g/L) and NH 4 + -N removal efficiency (34.0%) during the REEs wastewater treatment. Among the selected photobioreactors, Chlamydomonas sp. YC to treat real REEs wastewater at 3% CO 2 under high-temperature outdoor conditions attained the highest biomass (2.3 g/L) in the TB-PBRs with the best NH 4 + -N removal efficiency (43.0%). Furthermore, the input cost and CO 2 net sequestration evaluation revealed that TB-PBRs was more economical photobioreactors to treat REEs wastewater and fix CO 2 by Chlamydomonas sp. YC, providing some vital scientific details for REEs wastewater and CO 2 fixation by microalgal biotechnology.

Enhancement of Ammonium Removal from Landfill Leachate Using Microalgae by an Integrated Strategy of Nutrient Balance and Trophic Mode Conversion

Abstract:Landfill leachate is heavily-polluted wastewater generated from municipal solid wastes, which generally includes amounts of ammonium that are highly toxic to living organisms and the environment. The locally isolated microalgae have great potential in removing ammonium and producing value-added biomass from leachate. In this study, we determined the most robust algal strain, which was isolated and screened from a local landfill, and identified using the 18 s RNA gene sequences analysis. Subsequently, the integrated strategy of nutrient balance and trophic mode conversion was employed to make the leachate suitable for ammonium removal and algal growth. The results showed that a most robust, locally isolated strain NCU-9 (Nanchang University-9), was a promising strain and was selected out of four candidates and identified as Chlorella pyrenoidosa. This strain had a high tolerance to ammonium and leachate-borne bacteria when grown in unsterilized leachate. An optimal strategy was used, which included the nutrient balancing of nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) ratio (N/P) at 30:1 along with trophic mode conversion of N deprivation, to enhance the ammonium removal rate to as high as 95% in leachate remediation. The protein analysis of the cell composition was used to confirm this optimum strategy for ammonium removal, while the potential of NCU-9 was also considered as a value-added feedstock for animal feed in the downstream industry. Based on these results, we can conclude that microalgae-based leachate remediation has practical potential for nutrient recovery and biomass utilization.
Microalgae treatment of food processing wastewater for simultaneous biomass resource recycling and water reuse

Abstract:Food processing wastewater presents a considerable challenge for treatment owing to its elevated nitrogen and phosphorus levels. Nonetheless, it possesses inherent value attributed to its abundant nutrients and organic content. This study presents an innovative approach for treating food processing wastewater and reusing biomass. Initially, the secondary-treated wastewater undergoes flocculation and sedimentation, followed by reverse osmosis to ensure that the effluent meets reuse standards. Subsequently, reverse osmosis concentrates, generated at varying water recovery rates, are utilized for microalgae cultivation to recover nitrogen and phosphorus. Furthermore, this study highlights the potential of reverse osmosis concentrates in reducing the water demand for microalgae cultivation and in producing commercial-grade nutrients. The findings reveal that reverse osmosis achieves removal rates exceeding 90 % for both nitrogen and phosphorus and effluent meets reuse standards. Following seven days of cultivation, microalgae cultured in reverse osmosis concentrated water with an 80 % water recovery rate demonstrate denitrification and phosphorus removal rates of 73.88 % and 80.92 % respectively, with a biomass concentration of 563 mg/L and a protein yield of 128 mg/L. Moreover, a total volumetric energy yield of 10.08 kJ/L is obtained, facilitating energy valorization. In conclusion, this study offers practical solutions for wastewater treatment and resource recovery, enabling the attainment of zero discharge of pollutants while generating valuable resources through microalgae cultivation.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment by microalgae is the economical and environmentally friendly strategy, but is still challenged with the strict discharge standards and valuable biomass exploitations. The carbon and nitrogen metabolism of Chlorella pyrenoidosa was improved by the red LED light and starch addition to treat Tilapia aquaculture wastewater (T-AW) and produce protein simultaneously in a plate photobioreactor. The red LED light was applied to improve the nutrient removals at an outdoor temperature, but the concentrations except total nitrogen did not satisfy the discharge standards. After starch addition, the removal efficiencies of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, and total ammonia nitrogen were 85.15, 96.96, 88.53, and 98.01 % in a flat-plate photobioreactor, respectively, which met the discharge standards and the protein production reached 0.60 g/L. At a molecular level, the metabolic flux and transcriptome analyses showed that red light promoted carbon flux of the Embden-Meyerhof-Pranas pathway and tricarboxylic cycle, and upregulated the levels of genes encoding α-amylase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate dehydrogenase, nitrate transporter, and ammonium transporter, which facilitated nutrients removal and provided nitrogen sources for protein biosynthesis. The harvesting C. pyrenoidosa possessed the 62 % essential amino acids and great lipid composition for biofuels. This study provided a new orientation for outdoor wastewater treatment and protein production by collaboratively regulating the carbon and nitrogen metabolism of microalgae.

Abstract:Using microalgae for rare earth elements wastewater treatment has been proved to be effective, however, the technology is challenged by the unstable performances caused by the changeable wastewater qualities and natural conditions. In this study, a corrected response surface methodology was first used to provide an optimized operation strategy for the application of wastewater treatment using microalgae, by investigating the effects and interrelations of three main factors including temperature, illumination intensity and microalgae concentration, taking rare earth elements wastewater in Southern Jiangxi as an example. Nine models were obtained using nine types of wastewater. The models were then modified by categorizing wastewaters into two classes (error range <12%) according to their initial ammonia nitrogen concentrations. The optimal conditions for ammonia nitrogen removal in class I and class II wastewater were as follows: temperature of 21.0 and 23.6 °C, illumination intensity of 46.8, 45.3 LX %, microalgae concentration of 1.64 and 1.67 g dry weight/L. The results are confirmed by stable operation of a continuous-flow photobioreactor for more than 122 days. The amount of microalgae required to treat wastewater under natural conditions is 1.5–1.8 g dry weight/L estimated by the corrected model. It implies that nearly 16,710 kg and 46,520 kg of ammonia nitrogen could be removed from two typical wastewaters with optimal microalgae dosage in 2020. The results demonstrated that corrected response surface methodology provides a powerful approach for optimizing the operational conditions for wastewater treatment by microalgae.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides are the main components of fossil flue gas causing the most serious environmental problems. Developing a sustainable and green method to treat carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides of flue gas is still challenging. Here, a co-cultured microalgae/bacteria system, Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp., was developed for simultaneous sequestration of CO2 and removal of nitrogen oxides from flue gas, as well as producing valuable microalgae biomass. The co-cultured Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp. showed the highest CO2 fixation and NO3--N removal rate of 0.482 g L-1d-1 and 129.6 mg L-1d-1, the total chlorophyll accumulation rate of 65.6 mg L-1 at the initial volume ratio of Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp. as 1:10. The NO3--N removal rate can be increased to 183.5 mg L-1d-1 by continuous addition of 0.6 g L-1d-1 of glucose, which was 37% higher than that of co-culture system without the addition of glucose. Photosynthetic activity and carbonic anhydrase activity of Chlorella vulgaris were significantly increased when co-cultured with Pseudomonas sp. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy indicated that the humic acid-like substances released from Pseudomonas sp. could increase the growth of microalgae. This work provides an attractive way to simultaneously treatment of CO2 and NOX from flue gas to produce valuable microalgal biomass.

Abstract:Growth rate of the microalga Chlorella PY-ZU1 mutated by nuclear irradiation was optimised for use in the purification of undiluted anaerobic digestion effluent of swine manure (UADESM) with 3745 mg L (1) chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 1135 mg L (1) total nitrogen content. The problem of accessible carbon in UADESM was solved by continuous introduction of 15% (v/v) CO2. Adding phosphorus to UADESM and aeration of UADESM before inoculation both markedly reduced the lag phase of microalgal growth. In addition, the biomass yield and average growth rate of Chlorella PY-ZU1 increased significantly to 4.81 g L (1) and 601.2 mg L (1) d (1), respectively, while the removal efficiencies of total phosphorus, COD and ammonia nitrogen increased to 95%, 79% and 73%, respectively. Thus, the findings indicate that Chlorella PY-ZU1 can be used for effective purification of UADESM, while the biomass can be safely used as animal feed supplement. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:An innovative electro-Fenton enhanced membrane photobioreactor with satisfactory membrane fouling mitigation was constructed for microalgae harvesting. The porous carbon and carbon nanotubes hollow fiber membranes (PC-CHFMs) were used as the separation unit and cathode, simultaneously. H2O2 was generated by cathode reducing O2 in-situ, which would further produce •OH as the main oxidant by coupling H2O2 with Fe2+. The •OH could deeply remove the extracellular organic matter (EOM) deposited on the membrane surface or inside the pores. Experimental results showed that the permeate flux recovery rates of PC-CHFMs by electro-Fenton at the 18th, 29th and 41st day were 100%, 100% and 98.3%, respectively. The corresponding recovery rates by chemical cleaning at the same time were 99.8%, 81.7% and 54.4%. The stable and high permeate flux of PC-CHFMs made a great contribution to the microalgae harvesting efficiency, where the concentration factor could be 4.8 times higher than that of the control group. Filtrating superiority of PC-CHFMs was becoming more prominent with the extension of operating time. In addition, the removal efficiency of NH4+-N and TP in wastewater was approximately 100% at stable culture period.

Abstract:The microalgae treatment of mariculture wastewater can effectively reduce pollution of the coastal marine environment while utilizing the nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients of wastewater to accomplish resource recovery under carbon-neutral demand. Microalgae co-culture systems have attracted extensive interest due to their improved system stability and environmental adaptability compared to monocultures. This study aims to construct a microalgae co-culture system for actual mariculture wastewater treatment, with a thorough evaluation of species screening, condition optimization, synergistic mechanism analysis, and outdoor validation. The Chlorella sp. and Phaeodactylum tricornutum were screened to the co-culture system using simulated marine aquaculture wastewater. The optimal conditions were an inoculation ratio of 1:8 (Chlorella sp.: P. tricornutum, in cell density), a nitrogen-phosphorus (N/P) ratio of 12, and an aeration rate of 0.2 L/min. The removal rates of NH4+-N, TN, and TP were 100 %, 93.26 %, and 96.12 %, respectively; The contents of protein, polysaccharides, and lipid were 37.11 %, 33.99 %, and 10.21 %, respectively. Nitrogen and phosphorus were primarily removed by biological immobilization and assimilation. In the co-culture system with a 1:8 inoculum ratio, P. tricornutum showed inhibition to Chlorella sp. and the release of polysaccharides was stimulated in EPS. The soluble algae products of P. tricornutum could promote photosynthetic activities of Chlorella sp., and enhance the growth of Chlorella sp. as a carbon source under dark heterotrophic environments. The co-culture process increased the GS activity and decreased the GDH activity, while NiR and NR activities peaked earlier, improving microalgae nitrogen removal. The microalgal co-culture system was proven to treat actual wastewater under outdoor conditions, resulting in met water quality standards and a considerable increase in lipid content above the laboratory. The recycled biomass for the integrated production of bait and other by-products is a promising strategy. This study preliminary reveals the feasibility and resource potential of co-cultured microalgae for mariculture wastewater treatment.

Abstract:To investigate the coupled technology for advanced wastewater treatment and microalgal biomass production, a photo-membrane bioreactor was constructed. The microalga Scenedesmus sp. LX1 was cultured in the bioreactor using liquor prepared from the effluent of an electronic device factory. The algal cell growth, nitrate nitrogen removal, orthophosphate phosphorus removal were investigated. When cultured with batch operation, the average specific growth rate was about 0.09 d(-1), and low nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) concentrations in the liquor were achieved. However, under continuous operation with an inflow of 60 L h(-1), the average specific growth rate was only 0.02 d(-1), and removal rates of 100% for orthophosphate P and 46% for nitrate N were achieved. With the inflow of 120 L h(-1), the accumulated metal ions in the bioreactor adversely affected the algal cells. The algal cells were much easier to settle, and the removal efficiency for N and P decreased. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
High-efficient removal of ammonium and co-production of protein-rich biomass from ultrahigh-NH4+ industrial wastewater by mixotrophic Galdieria sulphuraria

Abstract:Microalgal cultivation system is regarded as an effective bioremediation system for NH4+-containing wastewater. However, ultrahigh NH4+ concentration in wastewater impeded the normal growth of most microalgal species leading to low NH4+ removal efficiency or even algal death, while indigenous bacteria and other biological contaminants in wastewater are negative for algal growth and eventually crash the microalgal-based wastewater treatment system. If maintaining sterile condition throughout the treatment process, the high consumption of energy must result in a high cost of operation with less valuable output. Aiming to achieve the goal of cost-effective NH4+ removal and protein-rich biomass co-production, a novel strategy of NH4+ reutilization from ultrahigh-NH4+ industrial wastewater was developed through photo-fermentation of the thermoacidophilic red alga Galdieria sulphuraria (G. sulphuraria) as cell factory. Results indicated that the highest protein content (71.66 % DW) was attained under optimal conditions with inoculum density of 1 × 108 cells mL−1, pH 3.5, 3380 mg NH4+ L−1 and light intensity of 230 μmol m−2 s−1 in shake flasks system for 4-day culture. Subsequently, repeated fed-batch culture under sterile and non-sterile mode was performed in ca. 5000 mg NH4+ L−1 wastewater medium in 5 L photo-fermenters, achieving a 98 % of NH4+ removal efficiency with a higher NH4+ removal rate (1705.67 mg L−1 d−1), biomass concentration (64.65 g L−1) and protein productivity (8.75 g L−1 d−1) under non-sterile culture mode. This work provided a new solution for high-efficient NH4+ removal coupled with protein-rich biomass production by a lower cost, high-value biomass output and environment-friendly way.

Abstract:To achieve ultrahigh-efficient ammonium removal and valuable biomass coproduction, Chlorella-mediated short-time acclimation was implemented in photo-fermentation. The results demonstrated short-time acclimation of mixotrophic Chlorella pyrenoidosa could significantly improve NH4+ removal and biomass production in shake flasks. After acclimation through two batch cultures in 5-L photo-fermenter, the maximum NH4+ removal rate (1,400 mg L-1 d-1) were achieved under high NH4+ level (4,750 mg L-1) in batch 3. In 50-L photo-fermenter, through one batch acclimated culture, the maximum NH4+ removal rate (2,212 mg L-1 d-1) and biomass concentration (58.4 g L-1) were achieved in batch 2, with the highest productivities of protein (5.56 g L-1 d-1) and total lipids (5.66 g L-1 d-1). The hypothetical pathway of nutrients assimilation in mixotrophic cells as cell factory was proposed with detailed discussion. This study provided a novel strategy for high-ammonium wastewater treatment without dilution, facilitating the algae-based "waste-to-treasure" bioconversion process for green manufacturing.
