Abstract:Abstract Background Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common childhood disabilities, impacting many areas of a child’s life. Increasingly, quality of life (QOL) measures are used to capture holistic wellbeing of children with CP. However most validated QOL measures for children are based on adult perspective only, with limited focus on child perspective. Conceptual differences between children’s and adults’ definitions of QOL may reflect different underlying QOL models which contribute to measurement score divergence. This qualitative study investigated the conceptual meaning of QOL for children with CP, comparing child and parent perspectives. Eighteen families completed 8 child interviews and 18 parent interviews. Children (11 boys, 7 girls) represented the spectrum of motor functioning, with comorbidities including epilepsy, intellectual disability, and communication impairments. Child and parent interviews were analysed separately using constructivist grounded theory methods and then findings were integrated to examine similarities and differences. Results All participants sought child inclusion in social activities, education, and recreation, requiring negotiation, adaptations, and advocacy. Five conceptual categories emerged from child interviews: socialising, play, negotiating limitations, self-identity, and developing agency. This reflected an individual model of QOL supporting child development goals. Parent interview findings revealed concepts related to child-specific QOL (day-to-day functioning and enabling child goals), as well as parent and family functioning concepts aligned to models of “family QOL”, embracing impacts of family relationships and the interdependence of QOL among family members. Conclusions This study identified similarities and differences in child and parent perceptions of QOL for the child with CP. Children provided insights into the importance of play and peer support, and their developing self-identity and sense of agency. Self-directed free play, especially, was identified by children but not parents as a central everyday activity promoting wellbeing and social inclusion. Parents discussed family functioning and aspects outside of child sight, such as managing time and financial resources. Relying on parents’ perspective alone to model child QOL misses valuable information that children contribute. Equally, child report alone misses parent experiences that directly influence child QOL. There is value in incorporating family QOL into parent reports while developing a conceptually separate child self-report QOL instrument.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To describe self-reported health status and quality of life (QOL) of ambulatory youths with cerebral palsy (CP) compared with sex- and age-matched typically developing youth (TDY).DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional cohort comparison.SETTING: Community-based.PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of 81 youth with CP (age range, 10-13 y) with Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I through III and 30 TDY participated. They were recruited from 2 regional children's hospitals and 1 regional military medical center.INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants completed the Child Health Questionnaire-Child Form (CHQ-CF87) for health status and the Youth Quality of Life for QOL.RESULTS: Youth with CP reported significantly lower health status than age- and sex-matched TDY in the following CHQ-CF87 subscales: role/social behavioral physical, bodily pain, physical function, and general health (CP mean rank, 46.8-55.2; TDY mean rank, 62.2-80.9). There were significant differences across GMFCS levels. There were no significant differences in self-reported QOL.CONCLUSIONS: Self-reported health status, but not QOL, appears sensitive to the functional health issues experienced by ambulatory youth with CP. Pain management and psychosocial support may be indicated for them.

Disparity of child/parent-reported quality of life in cerebral palsy persists into adolescence

Abstract:Aim: To examine the evolution of child-parent discrepancy in reporting quality of life (QoL) between childhood and adolescence in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to investigate potential factors associated with such a discrepancy. Method: We used data from the SPARCLE (Study of PARticipation of Children with CP Living in Europe) study, a population-based cohort study of children with CP, aged 8 to 12 years at baseline (in 2004-2005), in nine European centres, who were followed up at the age of 13 to 17 years. The KIDSCREEN-52 Quality of Life measure was used at baseline and follow-up; 354 child-parent dyads out of 500 eligible dyads were followed up (201 males, 153 females). We used intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) to examine agreement between parent proxy-reports and self-reported QoL. We used linear regression to examine factors associated with child-parent discrepancy in QoL reporting. Results: Agreement was low to moderate (ICC=0.16-0.48) in childhood and in adolescence across all QoL domains. In four domains (moods and emotions, self-perception, relationship with parents and home life, and social support and peers), the extent of the discrepancy increased significantly between childhood and adolescence. Parenting stress, child pain, and child behaviour problems influenced parent proxy-reports during both childhood and adolescence. Interpretation: The points of view of the child and their parents should be treated as complementary to obtain better knowledge regarding the QoL of children and adolescents with CP.
Primary Gastric Lymphoma Presenting as Acute Pancreatitis: A Case Report.

Abstract:CONTEXT Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the commonest form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Gastro-intestinal tract and bone marrow are common extra-nodal sites of lymphomatous involvement. CASE REPORT A 54-year-old woman presented with acute onset epigastric pain. On evaluation, raised serum amylase and radiological features of acute pancreatitis were detected. Gastroscopy revealed thickened folds in distal stomach, which on histopathology revealed large B-cell lymphoma. Subsequently, the patient developed extra-hepatic biliary obstruction due to peripancreatic lymph nodal mass that was relieved with plastic biliary stenting. Subsequent chemotherapy regime directed against lymphoma led to resolution of lymphoma. CONCLUSION In this patient , pancreatitis was the initial presentation of primary gastric lymphoma, which has not been commonly reported and therefore should be considered in the etiological workup.

Abstract:This study aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the CDPQOL questionnaire, a coeliac disease (CD)-specific paediatric health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instrument (CDPQOL), in Spanish children with CD. The CDPQOL questionnaire has two versions for children aged 8–12 and 13–18. Translation and linguistic validation were performed following an international consensus process. Internal consistency was calculated using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients, and convergent validity was assessed with average variance extracted (AVE). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA), when necessary, were carried out to assess the construct validity. A total of 235 children were included. In the 8–12 age group, a change in the distribution of items to a new structure of three dimensions (negative emotions, food feelings and social interaction) was required. In this new model, CFA supported the fit of the model ( χ 2 /gl = 1.79, RMSEA = 0.077 (IC 95% 0.05–0.100), CFI = 0.969, TLI 0.960, SRMR = 0.081) and Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients were > 0.7 in all three dimensions. In the 13–18 age group, CFA showed that all fit indexes were acceptable ( χ 2 /gl = 1.702, RMSEA = 0.102 (IC 95% 0.077–0.127), p 0.7 in all three dimensions, except for uncertainty dimension.

Factors influencing agreement between child self-report and parent proxy-reports on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL) generic core scales

Abstract:Background: In situations where children are unable or unwilling to respond for themselves, measurement of quality of life (QOL) is often obtained by parent proxy-report. However the relationship between child self and parent proxy-reports has been shown to be poor in some circumstances. Additionally the most appropriate statistical method for comparing ratings between child and parent proxy-reports has not been clearly established. The objectives of this study were to assess the: 1) agreement between child and parent proxy-reports on an established child QOL measure (the PedsQL) using two different statistical methods; 2) effect of chronological age and domain type on agreement between children's and parents' reports on the PedsQL; 3) relationship between parents' own well-being and their ratings of their child's QOL. Methods: One hundred and forty-nine healthy children (5.5 - 6.5, 6.5 - 7.5, and 7.5 - 8.5 years) completed the PedsQL. One hundred and three of their parents completed these measures in relation to their child, and a measure of their own QOL (SF-36). Results: Consistency between child and parent proxy-reports on the PedsQL was low, with Intra-Class correlation coefficients ranging from 0.02 to 0.23. Correlations were higher for the oldest age group for Total Score and Psychosocial Health domains, and for the Physical Health domain in the youngest age group. Statistically significant median differences were found between child and parent-reports on all subscales of the PedsQL. The largest median differences were found for the two older age groups. Statistically significant correlations were found between parents' own QOL and their proxy-reports of child QOL across the total sample and within the middle age group. Conclusion: Intra-Class correlation coefficients and median difference testing can provide different information on the relationship between parent proxy-reports and child self-reports. Our findings suggest that differences in the levels of parent-child agreement previously reported may be an artefact of the statistical method used. In addition, levels of agreement can be affected by child age, domains investigated, and parents' own QOL. Further studies are needed to establish the optimal predictors of levels of parent-child agreement.

Abstract:BackgroundConsideration of the quality of life in relation to individual health status is crucial for planning and maintaining a system of patient-centered care. Until recently, there have been no suitable instruments to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL,) of children and adolescents with severe, non-ambulant cerebral palsy (GMFCS functional levels IV and V). The “Caregiver Priorities and Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities Questionnaire” (CPCHILD©) was developed in English specifically for this population, and has been validated in Canada. The aim of this study was to translate and adapt the CPCHILD© Questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese, thus permitting researchers in Brazil to access this important tool for measuring HRQoL in this population, as well as the possibility of making comparisons with other studies that use the same questionnaire in other languages.MethodThe cross-cultural adaptation included two forward translations by independent translators, their synthesis, two back-translations by independent translators, an assessment of the versions by an expert committee and the development of a pre-final version, which was tested on 30 caregivers of children (5 -18) with severe cerebral palsy (GMFCS IV & V).ResultsDespite the relative equivalence between the two translations, some items required adaptations for the synthesized version. Certain modifications were necessary in the pre-final version to achieve idiomatic equivalence. The modifications were required to account for the socioeconomic and cultural levels of the target population.ConclusionThe translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the CPCHILD© questionnaire provides a Brazilian Portuguese equivalent to measure the HRQoL of children with severe developmental disabilities, with the potential to measure the benefits of various procedures that are indicated for these patients. This adaptation exhibited a satisfactory level of semantic equivalence between the Portuguese target and the original English source versions. The validity of the Brazilian version of the instrument must be established in the future by assessing its psychometric properties on Brazilian epidemiological samples.

Translation and Validation of the Arabic Version of the Cerebral Palsy-Quality of Life Child Self-Reported Questionnaire Among Children in the Saudi Arabian Population

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Cerebral Palsy-Quality of Life Child Self-Reported (CP-QoL Child Self-Report) questionnaire after it was translated and culturally adapted into Arabic. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted during the period from February 2021 to June 2023 in Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City (SBAHC) and the Children with Disability Association in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on children with cerebral palsy (CP) between the ages of nine to 12 years. After translation and cross-cultural adaptation, the questionnaire was administered to 65 children. The reliability and internal consistency of the tool were assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's alpha. The validity was analyzed through the association between the CP-QoL Child Self-Report questionnaire and the Arabic version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) 3.0-CP module (Mapi Research Trust, Lyon, France) using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The overall internal consistency was 0.870, where it ranged from 0.616 for the pain and impact of disability domain to 0.748 for the social well-being and acceptance domain. The interobserver (test-retest) reliability ranged from 0.540 to 0.779. There was a weak correlation between the domains of the CP-QoL Child Self-Report questionnaire and different domains of PedsQL-CP module. The overall quality of life (QoL) score of the children with CP who participated in the current study was 57.86±4.97. Conclusions: The result of the current study suggests that the English version of the CP-QoL Child Self-Report questionnaire was effectively translated into Arabic and had good psychometric properties in evaluating the QoL of Saudi children with CP aged between nine and 12 years.
Quality of Life-CI: Development of an Early Childhood Parent-Proxy and Adolescent Version

Abstract:Objectives: Severe to profound hearing loss is associated with communication, social, and behavioral difficulties that have been linked to worse health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared to individuals with normal hearing. HRQoL has been identified as an important health outcome that measures functional ability, particularly for chronic conditions and disabilities. The current study developed the QoL-cochlear implant (CI) for early childhood and adolescents using the recommended Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency guidelines on patient-reported outcomes. Design: Three phases of instrument development were conducted for both the early childhood (0 to 5 years old; parent proxy) and adolescent/young adult (13 to 22 years old) versions of the QoL-CI. Phase 1 included the development of our conceptual framework, which informed the discussion guides for stakeholder focus groups (e.g., audiologists, physicians, and therapists) at CI clinics in Miami and Philadelphia (n = 39). Open-ended interviews with parents (N = 18 for early childhood; N = 6 for adolescent/young adult version) and adolescents/young adults using CIs (n = 17) were then completed at both sites during phase 2. All interviews were transcribed and coded to identify common themes, which were then used to draft items for the QoL-CI. Both versions of the QoL-CI were developed using Qualtrics to allow for quick, easy electronic administration of the instruments on a tablet device. Last, phase 3 included cognitive testing in a new sample (N = 19 early childhood, N = 19 adolescent) to ensure that the draft instruments were clear, comprehensive, and easy to use. Results: Participant responses obtained via the open-ended interviews yielded an early childhood and adolescent version of the QoL-CI that was reportedly easy to complete and comprehensive. The final QoL-CI Early Childhood instrument yielded 35 questions across eight functional domains (environmental sounds, communication, social functioning, behavior, CI device management and routines, school, CI benefits, and early intervention). Similarly, the final QoL-CI adolescent/young adult version consisted of 46 items across eight domains (noisy environments, communication, CI usage and management, advocacy, social functioning, emotional functioning, acceptance, and independence). Conclusions: The QoL-CI is a condition-specific QoL instrument that can be used for children ages birth through 22 years. These instruments capture the "whole" child by not only focusing on communication and auditory skills but also academic, social and emotional functioning. Once validated, these CI-specific measures will enable providers to track long-term outcomes and evaluate the efficacy of new interventions to improve overall CI use and QoL for pediatric and young adult users.

Abstract:Purpose: The study aimed to investigate comprehensively the determinants of the quality of life (QOL) of caregivers of children with cerebral palsy (CP) based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY). Methods: A total of 167 children with CP (mean age 9.06 years, SD 2.61 years) and their caregivers (mean age 40.24 years, SD 5.43 years) participated in this study. The QOL of caregivers was measured with the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF-Taiwan version (WHOQOL-BREF-TW). The potential determinants of QOL were collected, including child characteristics, caregiver characteristics, and environmental factors from all dimensions of the ICF-CY and analysed using multiple regression models. Results: Four multiple regression models revealed that determinants of the QOL of caregivers of children with CP was multidimensional, encompassing child characteristics (age, type of CP, fine motor impairment, other diseases, behaviour and emotions, visual impairment, hearing impairment), caregiver characteristics (general mental health, parenting stress, marital status, family coping patterns, and socio-economic status), and environmental factors (child's medication, school setting, and current rehabilitation service, caregiver's spouse's age, family life impacts, and domestic helper). Conclusions: Knowledge of the determinants of QOL could serve as a guide in a holistic approach to evaluation and intervention and help plan interventions targeted at these determinants to improve the QOL of caregivers of children with CP. Implications for Rehabilitation Caregivers of children with CP had lower QOL, except the environment QOL. The QOL determinants of caregivers of children with CP are multidimensional, including child characteristics, caregiver characteristics, and environmental factors. In addition to child characteristics of severity of fine motor impairments and emotional and behavioural problems, caregiver characteristics of general mental health, parenting stress, and coping patterns, and environmental factors of family life impacts, and school setting demonstrated important relationships with caregiver QOL.

Abstract:Background: The Paediatric Eosinophilic Oesophagitis Module (PedsQL-EoE) was developed in English as a valid and reliable questionnaire to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with EoE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the PedsQL-EoE that was previously adapted to Spanish by our group. Methods: This cross-sectional multicentre study was conducted in 36 paediatric gastroenterology units. Groups with and without dietary restrictions were studied separately. The PedsQL-EoE consists of 33 items divided into seven factors. Age-specific versions of the PedsQL-EoE were sent by e-mail to children and parents. Statistical analysis was used to study the questionnaire structure by means of exploratory factor analysis and interitem correlations. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied to verify the proposed model as well as its psychometric properties through SMSR (standardized root mean square), outer loadings and R-square. To study construct validity and reliability, Cronbach´s alpha coefficient, convergent validity (AVE), discriminant validity (HTMT) and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were used. Results: A total of 341 children and 394 parents participated with 307 matched answers. The median age was 12 years, and 75% were male. The questionnaire structure explained 68% and 66% of the total variance for parents and children, respectively. Five items showed negative correlations and were removed from the questionnaire. CFA applied to the new model supported the following construct: SMRS was less than 0.08, outer loadings measured above 0.5, and R2 explained more than 89% of the total variance. Once the modifications were performed, good internal consistency was demonstrated, with Cronbach's alpha values > 0.7, AVE values > 0.5 and HTMT < 0.9 with good child/parent agreement (ICC = 0.80). The most robust model of the PedsQL-EoE module was formed by seven factors: Symptoms I (6 items), Symptoms II (4 items), Treatment (4 items), Worries (3 items), Communication (5 items), Food and Eating (3 items) and Food Feelings (3 items). Conclusions: The final PedsQL-EoE Module version, after the removal of five items, is a valid and reliable tool to be used in children with EoE. The Spanish validated version appears to be a useful instrument for measuring the impact of EoE on Spanish children´s quality of life.
Parent‐proxy pediatric CMT quality of life outcome measure: Validation of the Italian version

Abstract:Background and Aims The parent‐proxy reports can offer complementary informations or be the only source of Quality of Life measurement in young children. The aim of this study was to provide and validate the Italian version of the recently published parent‐proxy pCMT‐QOL for patients aged 8–18 years old, making it available for possible trials in Italian speaking children. Methods The English‐language instrument was translated and adapted into the Italian language using standard procedures: translation, transcultural adaptation, and back‐translation. Parent‐proxy pCMT‐QOL was administered to parents of patients with a genetic diagnosis of CMT, aged 8–18 years old. All parents were retested 2 weeks later to assess reliability. Results A total of 21 parents of CMT patients (18 CMT1A, 2 CMT2A, 1 CMT2K) were assessed during their children clinical appointments. The Italian‐pCMT‐QOL showed a high test–retest reliability; none of the parents had any difficulties with the completion of the questionnaire and no further revisions were necessary after completion. Interpretation The Italian parent‐proxy pCMT‐QOL is a reliable, culturally adapted, and comparable version of the original English instrument. This questionnaire will improve the quality of the follow‐up and will make it possible to monitor more accurately the severity of the disease in Italian‐speaking families.

Quality of Life of Children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Their Caregivers from the Perspective of Caregivers: a Chinese Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal-recessive motor neuron disease leading to dysfunction of multiple organs. SMA can impair the quality of life (QoL) of patients and family. We aimed to evaluate the QoL of children with SMA and their caregivers and to identify the factors associated with QoL in a cross-sectional study conducted in China. Methods We recruited 101 children aged 0–17 years with SMA and their caregivers from a children’s hospital in China. Twenty-six children had type I SMA, 56 type II and 19 type III. Each child’s QoL was measured by the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 3.0 Neuromuscular Module (PedsQL NMM), which was completed by the child’s caregivers. The caregiver’s QoL was measured by the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Family Impact Module (PedsQL FIM). Information on sociodemographic characteristics, disease-specific characteristics, and treatments were collected using the proxy-reported questionnaire. Two-sample t tests and one-way ANOVA were used to compare differences in average scores of QoL across subgroups. Results Children with type III SMA had a higher average Total score of PedsQL NMM and higher average scores in domains Neuromuscular disease and Family resources than children with type I or type II SMA ( p < 0.001). Caregivers of children with type III SMA reported higher average scores in the domains of Physical, Emotional, Social, and Cognitive functioning of the PedsQL FIM than those of children with types I or II SMA ( p < 0.05). In addition, disease-related characteristics (e.g. limited mobility, stable course of disease, skeleton deformity, and digestive system dysfunction) and respiratory support were associated with lower average scores of PedsQL NMM and PedsQL FIM ( p < 0.05). Exercise training, multidisciplinary team management and use of the medication Nusinersen were each associated with higher average scores in both PedsQL NMM and FIM ( p < 0.05). Conclusion Our study has demonstrated factors that may impair or improve QoL of children patients with SMA and their parents. Particularly, QoL was relatively poor in children with type I and type II SMA as well as in their caregivers compared to those with type III SMA. We strongly recommend that standard of care in a multidisciplinary team be strengthened to improve the QoL of SMA patients. Our study called for increased attention from clinical physicians on measuring QoL in their clinical practices in order to enhance the understanding of impacts of SMA and to make better decisions regarding treatment.

Abstract:There is a need for tools that can provide a brief assessment of functioning for children with neurodevelopmental conditions, including health‐related quality of life (HR‐QoL). This study evaluated the psychometric properties of three commonly used and well known HR‐QoL measures in a cohort of children presenting to clinical developmental assessment services. The most common diagnoses received in these assessment services were autism spectrum disorders. Findings showed good internal consistency for the PedsQL and the CHU‐9D, but not the EQ‐5D‐Y. This research also found that the CHU‐9D, EQ‐5D‐Y, and PedsQL correlated with relevant functioning domains assessed by the VABS‐III. Overall, the measures showed that children with neurodevelopmental conditions experienced poor HR‐QoL. The majority of children (>86%) met cut‐off criteria for significant health concerns on the PedsQL. On the EQ‐5D‐Y and CHU‐9D, they showed reduced HR‐QoL particularly on domains relating to school and homework, being able to join in activities, looking after self, and doing usual activities. This study supports the use of the CHU‐9D and PedsQL in this population to assess and potentially track HR‐QoL in a broad neurodevelopment paediatric population.

Abstract:Hyperhomocysteinemia is widely regarded as a risk factor for arterial thrombosis (1)(2), and it is also implicated as a risk factor for venous thrombosis (3)(4)(5)(6). Therefore, homocysteine (Hcy) often is included in hypercoagulability evaluations (7). The Abbott IMx Hcy fluorescence polarization immunoassay instructions recommend EDTA- or lithium heparin-anticoagulated plasma or serum, whereas other coagulation tests are generally performed on citrate-anticoagulated specimens. To simplify specimen collection and avoid unnecessary phlebotomy, we investigated the compatibility of the Abbott IMx Hcy assay with citrate-anticoagulated plasma. Previous reports have suggested that acidic citrate stabilizes the Hcy concentration in whole-blood specimens for at least 6 h at room temperature (8)(9). Therefore, we also studied the stability of Hcy in whole-blood specimens collected in sodium citrate. To evaluate the correlation between citrate and EDTA Hcy values, 114 sets of paired specimens were concurrently obtained from 96 nonfasting individuals (87 healthy volunteer platelet donors and 9 patients undergoing hypercoagulability evaluation) in Becton Dickinson Vacutainer lavender-top [tripotassium EDTA (K3EDTA)] and blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tubes. For each patient, the citrate tube was drawn immediately before the EDTA tube, in accordance with the NCCLS guidelines. The conditions and timing for specimen collection, processing, storage, and assay performance were identical for the two anticoagulants. The specimen pairs were separated from the cells within 30 min of phlebotomy unless specimen transportation would be longer than 30 min, in which case specimen pairs were placed immediately on ice and separated from cells within 4 h. Health-Related Quality of Life Instruments for Children With Cochlear Implants: Development of Child and Parent-Proxy Measures

Abstract:Objectives: Severe to profound hearing loss is associated with worse health-related quality of life (HRQoL), reflecting the wide-ranging effects of deafness on spoken language, cognition, and social/behavioral development. However, there are currently no cochlear implant (CI)-specific HRQoL measures that were developed using the Food and Drug Administration Guidance on patient-reported outcomes. This study developed the first HRQoL instruments (CI-QoL) for children with CIs, ages 6 to 12, and a parent-proxy measure for this age group. Design: Two phases of instrument development were conducted. Phase 1 consisted of a literature review yielding a conceptual framework and discussion guides to elicit information from stakeholder focus groups at CI clinics in Miami and Philadelphia (n = 30; e.g., physicians, speech pathologists). During phase 2, open-ended interviews were conducted with 21 parent-child dyads (M child age = 9.1 years) recruited from these two clinics. Interviews were transcribed, followed by content analysis in NVivo to identify the most frequent and difficult themes. Items were then derived from these themes to form the initial draft instruments. A multimodal approach was used to create the child-report version (i.e., pictorial representations, audio recording of items, written text above the drawings) to maximize comprehension and ease of responding. Both measures were developed to be administered electronically on a tablet device. In phase 3, a new set of parent-child dyads (n = 20; child age M = 9.2 years) completed a cognitive testing protocol to ensure clarity, ease of use, and comprehensiveness. Cognitive testing led to revisions and finalization of the instruments. Results: The final self-report measure contained 33 items across eight domains: Noisy Environments, Academic Functioning, Child Acceptance, Oral Communication, Social Functioning, Fatigue, Emotional Functioning, and Device Management. The final parent-proxy measure included 42 items on nine scales: the same eight scales that appear on the child version, with the addition of Behavior Problems. Correlations between child and parent reports on each scale ranged from r = 0.08 to 0.48. Conclusions: CI-specific HRQoL instruments have now been developed for school-age children with CIs, with an accompanying parent-proxy version. After a psychometric validation, these CI-specific measures will enable us to track long-term outcomes, evaluate the efficacy of interventions to improve CI use (e.g., single versus bilateral implantation, AV therapy, maternal sensitivity training), and provide a profile of the "whole child's" functioning to facilitate care.

Abstract:The aim of this correlational study was to compare the participation in out of school activities, activity preferences, and quality of life (QoL) of children between 8 and 12 years of age with cerebral palsy (CP) ( n = 30) and typical development ( n = 60) in Turkey. Outcome measures included the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment, Preferences for Activity of Children, and the Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire. Results suggest children with CP were at a disadvantage compared to their typically developing peers in participating in out-of-school activities, however they tended to report greater preference for these activities than their typically developing peers. Based on these findings, we recommended health professionals aim to increase the quality of life for clients with CP by including social participation as one component of rehabilitation.

Abstract:The Prolapse Quality of Life Questionnaire (P-QoL) is a specific questionnaire created to assess the impact of pelvic organ prolapse on women’s quality of life. The aim of the present study was to cross-culturally adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the P-QoL for Spanish women. The cross-cultural adaptation was conducted by a standardized translation/back-translation method. Psychometric analysis was performed by assessing the validity, reliability, responsiveness and feasibility. A total of 200 Spanish women were recruited and assigned to symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. The Spanish P-QoL version demonstrated good content validity. Convergent validity showed high intercorrelations with the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory short form and the Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire short form. The discriminant validity showed statistically significant differences between the symptomatic and the asymptomatic groups. The internal consistency was high and of acceptable values. The test-retest reliability was shown to be high in all the cases. Regarding responsiveness, the effect size and standardized response mean demonstrated moderate values. The average time for administration was 10 (3) min. The Spanish P-QoL showed considerable support for the appropriate metric properties of validity, reliability, responsiveness and feasibility to evaluate the symptom severity and its impact on the quality of life in Spanish women with urogenital prolapse.
