Abstract:Both of nanoplastics (NPs) and Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) are organic pollutants widely detected in the environment and organisms. The large specific surface area of NPs makes them ideal vectors for carrying various toxicants, such as organic pollutants, metals, or other nanomaterials, posing potential threats to human health. This study used Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) to investigate the neurodevelopmental toxicity induced by combined exposure of TBBPA and polystyrene NPs. Our results showed that combined exposure caused synergistic inhibitory effects on the survival rate, body length/width, and locomotor ability. Furthermore, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipofuscin accumulation, and dopaminergic neuronal loss suggested that oxidative stress was involved in induction of neurodevelopmental toxicity in C. elegans. The expressions of Parkinson's disease related gene (pink-1) and Alzheimer's disease related gene (hop-1) were significantly increased after combined exposure of TBBPA and polystyrene NPs. Knock out of pink-1 and hop-1 genes alleviated the adverse effects such as growth retardation, locomotion deficits, dopaminergic loss, and oxidative stress induction, indicating that pink-1 and hop-1 genes play an important role in neurodevelopmental toxicity induced by TBBPA and polystyrene NPs. In conclusion, TBBPA and polystyrene NPs had synergistic effect on oxidative stress induction and neurodevelopmental toxicity in C. elegans, which was mediated through increased expressions of pink-1 and hop-1.
Maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics during gestation and lactation induces hepatic and testicular toxicity in male mouse offspring

Abstract:Nanoplastics have raised considerable concerns since their ubiquity in the environment and potential hazard to health. It has been proven that polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) can be maternally transferred to the offspring. In this study, mice were exposed gestationally and lactationally to PS-NPs (size 100 nm) at different doses (0.1, 1 and 10 mg/L) to investigate the trans-generational poisonousness. Our data illustrated that maternal PS-NPs exposure in pregnancy and lactation resulted in a decline in birth and postnatal body weight in offspring mice. Furthermore, high-dose PS-NPs reduced liver weight, triggered oxidative stress, caused inflammatory cell infiltration, up-regulated proinflammatory cytokine expression, and disturbed glycometabolism in the liver of male offspring mice. In addition, pre- and postnatal PS-NPs exposure diminished testis weight, disrupted seminiferous epithelium and decreased sperm count in mouse offspring. Moreover, PS-NPs induced testicular oxidative injury, as presented by increased malondialdehyde generation and altered superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in the testis of offspring mice. These findings declared that maternal exposure to PS-NPs in pregnancy and lactation can cause hepatic and testicular toxicity in male mouse pups, which put forward new understanding into the detrimental effects of nanoplastics on mammalian offspring.
Effects of nanoplastic exposure during pregnancy and lactation on neurodevelopment of rat offspring

Abstract:Microplastics have emerged as a prominent global environmental contaminant, and they have been found in both human placenta and breast milk. However, the potential effects and mechanisms of maternal exposure to microplastics at various gestational stages on offspring neurodevelopment remain poorly understood. This investigation delves into the potential neurodevelopmental ramifications of maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) during distinct phases of pregnancy and lactation. Targeted metabolomics shows that co-exposure during both pregnancy and lactation primarily engendered alterations in monoamine neurotransmitters within the cortex and amino acid neurotransmitters within the hippocampus. After prenatal exposure to PS-NPs, fetal rats showed appreciably diminished cortical thickness and heightened cortical cell proliferation. However, this exposure did not affect the neurodifferentiation of radial glial cells and intermediate progenitor cells. In addition, offspring are accompanied by disordered neocortical migration, typified by escalated superficial layer neurons proliferation and reduced deep layer neurons populations. Moreover, the hippocampal synapses showed significantly widened synaptic clefts and diminished postsynaptic density. Consequently, PS-NPs culminated in deficits in anxiolytic-like behaviors and spatial memory in adolescent offspring, aligning with concurrent neurotransmitter and synaptic alterations. In conclusion, this study elucidates the sensitive windows of early-life nanoplastic exposure and the consequential impact on offspring neurodevelopment.

Abstract:In animal species, the brain-gut axis is a complex bidirectional network between the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the central nervous system (CNS) consisting of numerous microbial, immune, neuronal, and hormonal pathways that profoundly impact organism development and health. Although nanoplastics (NPs) have been shown to cause intestinal and neural toxicity in fish, the role of the neurotransmitter and intestinal microbiota interactions in the underlying mechanism of toxicity, particularly at environmentally relevant contaminant concentrations, remains unknown. Here, the effect of 44 nm polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on the brain-intestine-microbe axis and embryo-larval development in zebrafish (Danio rerio) was investigated. Exposure to 1, 10, and 100 μg/L PS-NPs for 30 days inhibited growth and adversely affected inflammatory responses and intestinal permeability. Targeted metabolomics analysis revealed an alteration of 42 metabolites involved in neurotransmission. The content of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC; dopamine metabolite formed by monoamine oxidase activity) was significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner after PS-NP exposure. Changes in the 14 metabolites correlated with changes to 3 microbial groups, including Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes, as compared to the control group. A significant relationship between Firmicutes and homovanillic acid (0.466, Pearson correlation coefficient) was evident. Eight altered metabolites (l-glutamine (Gln), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), serotonin, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), l-cysteine (Cys), l-glutamic acid (Glu), norepinephrine (NE), and l-tryptophan (l-Trp)) had a negative relationship with Proteobacteria although histamine (His) and acetylcholine chloride (ACh chloride) levels were positively correlated with Proteobacteria. An Associated Network analysis showed that Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were highly correlated (0.969). Furthermore, PS-NPs accumulated in the gastrointestinal tract of offspring and impaired development of F1 (2 h post-fertilization) embryos, including reduced spontaneous movements, hatching rate, and length. This demonstration of transgenerational deficits is of particular concern. These findings suggest that PS-NPs cause intestinal inflammation, growth inhibition, and restricted development of zebrafish, which are strongly linked to the disrupted regulation within the brain-intestine-microbiota axis. Our study provides insights into how xenobiotics can disrupt the regulation of brain-intestine-microbiota and suggests that these end points should be taken into account when assessing environmental health risks of PS-NPs to aquatic organisms.

Abstract:Airborne plastic particles have received increasing attention due to their ubiquity in the atmosphere and potential human health risks. Previous studies have demonstrated that early-life exposure to environmental toxicants is associated with abnormal metabolic function. However, the impact of exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) through inhalation on the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in mothers and offspring remains unknown. In the present study, mice were gestationally exposed to PSNPs at different doses (0, 1, 5, and 25 μg μl−1) through inhalation to investigate health hazards to the dam at weaning and to adult offspring. Gestational exposure to PSNPs at high doses significantly induced hepatic steatosis in the dam and upregulated genes involved in de novo lipogenesis, fatty acids (FAs) uptake, and triacylglycerol (TG) synthesis in the monoacylglycerol acyltransferase pathway. Gestational exposure to high doses of PSNPs led to hepatic steatosis in adult female offspring but not male offspring, and expression levels of genes related to FAs uptake and TG synthesis in the glycerol 3-phosphate pathway were significantly elevated. Collectively, our data demonstrate that gestational exposure to airborne PSNPs induced different development processes of NAFLD in the dam and offspring, providing vital data about plastic particulate toxicology.

Abstract:Microplastics can enter the human body via direct body contact or the food chain, increasing the likelihood of adverse impacts on pregnancy and fetal development. We investigated the potential effects and modes of action of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) in placenta and fetus using mice as a model species. Maternal PS-NP exposure (100 nm; 1 and 10 mg/L) via drinking water induced a significant decline in fetal weights at the higher exposure concentration. Abnormal morphologies of cells in the placenta and fetus were observed after exposure. For the placenta, transcriptomic analyses indicated that PS-NPs significantly disturbed cholesterol metabolism and complement and coagulation cascades pathways. Metabolomics showed appreciable metabolic disorders, particularly affecting sucrose and daidzein concentrations. For the fetal skeletal muscle, transcriptomics identified many significantly regulated genes, involving muscle tissue development, lipid metabolism, and skin formation. Transcriptomic analysis of the placenta and fetal skeletal muscle at the high PS-NP concentration showed that APOA4 and its transcriptional factors, facilitating cholesterol transportation, were significantly regulated in both tissues. Our study revealed that PS-NPs caused fetal growth restriction and significantly disturbed cholesterol metabolism in both placenta and fetus, offering new insights into the mechanisms underlying the placental and fetal effects in mice exposed to PS-NPs.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) are unavoidable hazardous materials that result from the human production and use of plastics. While there is evidence that NPs can bioaccumulate in the brain, no enough research regarding the pathways by which NPs reach the brain was conducted, and it is also urgently needed to evaluate the health threat to the nervous system. Here, we observed accumulation of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) with different surface modifications (PS, PS-COOH, and PS-NH2) in mouse brains. Further studies showed that PS-NPs disrupted the tight junctions between endothelial cells and transport into endothelial cells via the endocytosis and macropinocytosis pathways. Additionally, NPs exposure induced a series of alternations in behavioral tests, including anxiety- and depression-like changes and impaired social interaction performance. Further results identified that NPs could be internalized into neurons and localized in the mitochondria, bringing about mitochondrial dysfunction and a concurrent decline of ATP production, which might be associated with abnormal animal behaviors. The findings provide novel insights into the neurotoxicity of NPs and provide a basis for the formulation of policy on plastic production and usage by relevant government agencies.

Abstract:The production of plastic is still increasing globally, which has led to an increasing number of plastic particles in the environment. Nanoplastics (NPs) can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and induce neurotoxicity, but in-depth mechanism and effective protection strategies are lacking. Here, C57BL/6 J mice were treated with 60 μg polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs, 80 nm) by intragastric administration for 42 days to establish NPs exposure model. We found that 80 nm PS-NPs could reach and cause neuronal damage in the hippocampus, and alter the expression of neuroplasticity-related molecules (5-HT, AChE, GABA, BDNF and CREB), and even affect the learning and memory ability of mice. Mechanistically, combined with the results of hippocampus transcriptome, gut microbiota 16 s ribosomal RNA and plasma metabolomics, we found that the gut-brain axis mediated circadian rhythm related pathways were involved in the neurotoxicity of NPs, especially Camk2g, Adcyap1 and Per1 may be the key genes. Both melatonin and probiotic can significantly reduce intestinal injury and restore the expression of circadian rhythm-related genes and neuroplasticity molecules, and the intervention effect of melatonin is more effective. Collectively, the results strongly suggest the gut-brain axis mediated hippocampal circadian rhythm changes involved in the neurotoxicity of PS-NPs. Melatonin or probiotics supplementation may have the application value in the prevention of neurotoxicity of PS-NPs.
Ferroptosis Is Involved in Sex-Specific Small Intestinal Toxicity in the Offspring of Adult Mice Exposed to Polystyrene Nanoplastics during Pregnancy

Abstract:Nanoplastics are common contaminants in the living environment. Thus far, no investigations have focused on small intestinal injury in the offspring of adult mice that were exposed to nanoplastics through the respiratory system during pregnancy. Here, we evaluated potential intestinal injury in the offspring of adult mice that were subjected to maternal 80 nm polystyrene nanoparticle (PS-NP) exposure during gestation. PS-NP exposure significantly reduced the birth weight of female mice compared with male mice. However, the adult body weights of the female and male offspring were substantially greater in the PS-NP-exposed groups. Additionally, we found that exposure to PS-NPs during pregnancy caused histological changes in the small intestines of both female and male offspring. Mechanistic analysis revealed upregulation of reactive oxygen species in the small intestines, as indicated by changes in the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Furthermore, exposure to PS-NPs led to downregulation of GPx4, FTH1, and FTL protein levels, indicating initiation of ferroptosis. Notably, the changes in mRNA expression levels of GPx4, FTH1, and FTL differed between female and male offspring. Although all phenotypes failed to demonstrate classic dose-dependent effects, the data imply that small intestinal toxicity is greater in female offspring than in male offspring. Our results suggest that PS-NP exposure during pregnancy causes sex-specific small intestinal toxicity, which might contribute to reactive oxygen species activation and subsequent ferroptosis. Overall, this study showed toxic effects in offspring after PS-NP exposure during pregnancy.
Inhibitory Impact of Prenatal Exposure to Nano-Polystyrene Particles on the MAP2K6/p38 MAPK Axis Inducing Embryonic Developmental Abnormalities in Mice

Abstract:Nanoplastics, created by the fragmentation of larger plastic debris, are a serious pollutant posing substantial environmental and health risks. Here, we developed a polystyrene nanoparticle (PS-NP) exposure model during mice pregnancy to explore their effects on embryonic development. We found that exposure to 30 nm PS-NPs during pregnancy resulted in reduced mice placental weight and abnormal embryonic development. Subsequently, our transcriptomic dissection unveiled differential expression in 102 genes under PS-NP exposure and the p38 MAPK pathway emerged as being significantly altered in KEGG pathway mapping. Our findings also included a reduction in the thickness of the trophoblastic layer in the placenta, diminished cell invasion capabilities, and an over-abundance of immature red cells in the blood vessels of the mice. In addition, we validated our findings through the human trophoblastic cell line, HTR-8/SVneo (HTR). PS-NPs induced a drop in the vitality and migration capacities of HTR cells and suppressed the p38 MAPK signaling pathway. This research highlights the embryotoxic effects of nanoplastics on mice, while the verification results from the HTR cells suggest that there could also be certain impacts on the human trophoblast layer, indicating a need for further exploration in this area.

Abstract:Early-life exposure to different sizes of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) affects biotoxicity, which is related not only to the dose but also directly to particle size. In this study, pregnant ICR mice received drinking water containing 5 μm polystyrene microplastics (5 μm PS-MPs) or 0.05 μm polystyrene nanoplastics (0.05 μm PS-NPs) from pregnancy to the end of lactation. Histopathological and molecular biological detection, 16s rRNA sequencing for intestinal flora analysis, and targeted metabolomics analysis were used to look into how early-life exposure to MNPs of various sizes affects young mice's growth and development, gut flora, and metabolism. The outcomes showed that 0.05 μm and 5 μm PS-MNPs can pass through the placental and mammary barriers, and MNPs accumulating in various organs were size-dependent: the greater the accumulation in organs, the smaller the particle size. Further studies found that the larger 5 μm PS-MPs caused only small accumulation in organs, with the main health hazard being the disruption of intestinal barrier and liver function, indirectly causing gut dysbiosis and metabolic disorders. In contrast, the smaller 0.05 μm PS-NPs caused excessive accumulation in organs, not only impaired the function of the intestine and liver, but also caused direct mechanical damage to physical tissues, and ultimately resulted in more severe intestinal and metabolic disorders. Our findings underline the size-dependent risks associated with micro- and nanoplastics exposure early in life and highlight the necessity for tailored approaches to address health damages from early MNPs exposure.
Detection of enterotoxin in faeces and anti-enterotoxin in serum after Clostridium perfringens food-poisoning.

Abstract:Two outbreaks of Clostridium perfringens food-poisoning involving the same person were investigated. In the first, typical symptoms with diarrhoea and abdominal pain were observed. In the second, there were no classical signs of food-poisoning; the victim felt some flatulence and the faeces had a pasty appearance and an unpleasant smell. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis and the reversed passive haemagglutination test were rapid and reliable assay methods for enterotoxin in faeces. In the first outbreak, 13–16 μg enterotoxin/g faeces were detected, and 3–4 μg/g in the second. The detection of enterotoxin in faeces indicates the potential use of enterotoxin tests on diarrhoeal samples for diagnosing C. perfringens food-poisoning. No enterotoxin was detected in serum during the acute stage of the illness, but the antibody titre showed a considerable rise in the first two months after the food-poisoning outbreak.
Selective bioaccumulation of polystyrene nanoplastics in fetal rat brain and damage to myelin development

Abstract:Micro(nano)plastic, as a new type of environmental pollutant, have become a potential threat to the life and health of various stages of biology. However, it is not yet clear whether they will affect brain development in the fetal stage. Therefore, this study aims to explore the potential effects of nanoplastics on the development of fetal rat brains. To assess the allocation of NPs (25 nm and 50 nm) in various regions of the fetal brain, pregnant rats were exposed to concentrations (50, 10, 2.5, and 0.5 mg/kg) of PS-NPs. Our results provided evidence of the transplacental transfer of PS-NPs to the fetal brain, with a prominent presence observed in several cerebral regions, notably the cerebellum, hippocampus, striatum, and prefrontal cortex. This distribution bias might be linked to the developmental sequence of each brain region. Additionally, we explored the influence of prenatal exposure on the myelin development of the cerebellum, given its the highest PS-NP accumulation in offspring. Compared with control rats, PS-NPs exposure caused a significant reduction in myelin basic protein (MBP) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) expression, a decrease in myelin thickness, an increase in cell apoptosis, and a decline in the oligodendrocyte population. These effects gave rise to motor deficits. In conclusion, our results identified the specific distribution of NPs in the fetal brain following prenatal exposure and revealed that prenatal exposure to PS-NPs can suppress myelin formation in the cerebellum of the fetus.

Abstract:Nanoplastics-induced developmental and reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity and immunotoxicity are a focus of widespread attention. However, the effects of nanoplastics (NPs) on glycolipid metabolism and the precise underlying mechanisms are unclear at present. Here, we showed that oral administration of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) disrupts glycolipid metabolism, with reactive oxygen species (ROS) identified as a potential key signaling molecule. After PS-NPs treatment, excessive production of ROS induced the inflammatory response and activated the antioxidant pathway through nuclear factor-erythroid factor 2-related factor 2. The activation of nuclear factor-κB (NFκB) signaling pathway induced the phosphorylation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway, which induced the activation of extracellular regulated kinases (ERK) and p38. Constitutive activation of the MAPK signaling proteins induced high continued phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1, in turn, leading to decreased protein kinase B (Akt) activity, which weakened the sensitivity of liver cells to insulin signals and induced insulin resistance. In parallel, phosphorylation of Akt led to loss of control of FoXO1, a key gene of gluconeogenesis, activating transcription of glucose-6-phosphatase (G6PC) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) in a manner dependent on PGC1α. Moreover, the activated ERK promoted lipid accumulation through ERK-PPARγ cascades. Therefore, sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 and levels of its downstream lipogenic enzymes, ACC-1, were up-regulated. Upon treatment with the antioxidant resveratrol, PS-NPs-induced glucose and lipid metabolic disorders were improved by inhibiting ROS-induced activation of NFκB and MAPK signaling pathway in mice. Based on above, PS-NPs exposure disrupts glycolipid metabolism in mice, with ROS identified as a potential key signaling molecule.

Effects of Partial Reduction of Polystyrene Micro-Nanoplastics on the Immunity, Gut Microbiota and Metabolome of Mice

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) and nanoplastic (NP) could cause gut microbiota alterations. Although micro/nanoplastic (MNP) degradation is attracting increasing scientific interest, the evaluation of MNP reduction in gut needs to be further investigated. This study aimed to determine whether partial reduction of polystyrene MNP in gut could affect the immunity, gut microbiota and metabolome of mice. Serum eotaxin/CCL11 was at a lower level in the mice exposed to 200 μg and 500 μg NP (i.e., 2NP and 5NP groups, respectively) compared to those exposed to 500 μg MP (i.e., 5 MP group), while serum IL-2 and IL-4 were both greater in the 5NP group compared to the 5 MP group. The gut bacterial alpha diversity, fungal diversity and evenness were all similar among the MNP and control groups. However, the gut fungal richness was greater in both the 5NP and 5 MP groups compared to the control group. The gut bacterial and fungal compositions were both different between the MNP and control groups. Multiple gut bacteria and fungi showed different levels between the 2NP and 5NP groups, as well as between the 2NP and 5 MP groups. Increased Staphylococcus and decreased Glomus were determined in the 2NP group compared to both the 5NP and 5 MP groups. A Lactobacillus phylotype was found as the sole gatekeeper in the bacterial network of the 2NP group, while a Bifidobacterium phylotype contributed most to the stability of the bacterial networks of both the 5NP and 5 MP groups. Multiple differential gut metabolic pathways were found between the 2NP and 5NP/5 MP groups, and mTOR signaling pathway was largely upregulated in the 2NP group compared to both the 5NP and 5 MP groups. The relevant results could help with the evaluation of partial reduction of MNP in gut.
MicroRNA and Gut Microbiota Alter Intergenerational Effects of Paternal Exposure to Polyethylene Nanoplastics

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs), as emerging contaminants, have been shown to cause testicular disorders in mammals. However, whether paternal inheritance effects on offspring health are involved in NP-induced reproductive toxicity remains unclear. In this study, we developed a mouse model where male mice were administered 200 nm polyethylene nanoparticles (PE-NPs) at a concentration of 2 mg/L through daily gavage for 35 days to evaluate the intergenerational effects of PE-NPs in an exclusive male-lineage transmission paradigm. We observed that paternal exposure to PE-NPs significantly affected growth phenotypes and sex hormone levels and induced histological damage in the testicular tissue of both F0 and F1 generations. In addition, consistent changes in sperm count, motility, abnormalities, and gene expression related to endoplasmic reticulum stress, sex hormone synthesis, and spermatogenesis were observed across paternal generations. The upregulation of microRNA (miR)-1983 and the downregulation of miR-122-5p, miR-5100, and miR-6240 were observed in both F0 and F1 mice, which may have been influenced by reproductive signaling pathways, as indicated by the RNA sequencing of testis tissues and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction findings. Furthermore, alterations in the gut microbiota and subsequent Spearman correlation analysis revealed that an increased abundance of Desulfovibrio (C21_c20) and Ruminococcus (gnavus) and a decreased abundance of Allobaculum were positively associated with spermatogenic dysfunction. These findings were validated in a fecal microbiota transplantation trial. Our results demonstrate that changes in miRNAs and the gut microbiota caused by paternal exposure to PE-NPs mediated intergenerational effects, providing deeper insights into mechanisms underlying the impact of paternal inheritance.

Abstract:The issue of environmental nanoplastic (NPl) particle and microplastic (MPl) particle pollution is becoming increasingly severe, significantly impacting ecosystems and biological health. Research shows that NPl/MPl can penetrate the placental barrier and enter the fetus, leading to transgenerational effects. This review integrates the existing literature on the effects of prenatal NPl/MPl exposure on mammalian offspring, focusing particularly on its negative impacts on the central nervous system, liver, intestinal health, reproductive function, and skeletal muscles. The vast majority of previous studies on prenatal NPl/MPl in mammals have used polystyrene material. Future research should explore the effects of other prenatal NPl/MPl materials on offspring to better reflect the realities of the human environment. It is also essential to investigate the potential harm and underlying mechanisms associated with prenatal NPl/MPl exposure to offspring in greater depth. This will aid in developing appropriate prevention and treatment strategies in the future.

Abstract:Shelf-life of scientific discoveries is usually less than few decades because science itself is an ever evolving discipline. Therefore, it is truly remarkable that pyloromyotomy described by Conrad Ramstedt (Fig. 1) is celebrating centennial this year. In October 1912, Ramstedt described the cure of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) and that serendipitous discovery has stood the test of 100 years! (Fig. 2) It is also the most satisfying of all surgical procedures that offers consistent cure and it has saved millions of infants from premature death. Athena is pleased to join the fraternity of pediatric surgery in celebrating Ramstedt’s achievement [1]. Colossal success of a curative procedure usually obviates the need for further scientific research by solving the underlying problem. Athena is curious to know the impact of Ramstedt on the research and literature pertaining to HPS. She searched Pubmed titles using the key words “pyloromyotomy”, or “hypertrophic pyloric stenosis”. Contrary to the expectations, the number of research articles has progressively increased over the last century (Fig. 3). Some of the recent research papers conclude diametrically opposite of the views held in the past.
