Abstract:The four Id (inhibitor of differentiation) proteins (Id1, Id2, Id3, and Id4) dimerize and neutralize the transcriptional activity of basic helix‐loop‐helix (bHLH) proteins. The Id proteins negatively regulate differentiation and promote proliferation hence the expression of specific subsets of Id proteins is high in many different types of cancers. However, the expression of all the Id isoforms and their potential function in specific cancer cell types is not known. In this study, the expression and function of all four Id isoforms in prostate cancer cell lines was investigated to gain a better understanding of the role of each Id isoform in normal prostate epithelial and prostate cancer cells.

Abstract:Purpose of review This review seeks to provide a summary of the most recent research findings regarding the utilization of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot, in the field of ophthalmology in addition to exploring the limitations and ethical considerations associated with its application. Recent findings ChatGPT has gained widespread recognition and demonstrated potential in enhancing patient and physician education, boosting research productivity, and streamlining administrative tasks. In various studies examining its utility in ophthalmology, ChatGPT has exhibited fair to good accuracy, with its most recent iteration showcasing superior performance in providing ophthalmic recommendations across various ophthalmic disorders such as corneal diseases, orbital disorders, vitreoretinal diseases, uveitis, neuro-ophthalmology, and glaucoma. This proves beneficial for patients in accessing information and aids physicians in triaging as well as formulating differential diagnoses. Despite such benefits, ChatGPT has limitations that require acknowledgment including the potential risk of offering inaccurate or harmful information, dependence on outdated data, the necessity for a high level of education for data comprehension, and concerns regarding patient privacy and ethical considerations within the research domain. Summary ChatGPT is a promising new tool that could contribute to ophthalmic healthcare education and research, potentially reducing work burdens. However, its current limitations necessitate a complementary role with human expert oversight.

Abstract:Background: The emergence of Chat-Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) by OpenAI has revolutionized AI technology, demonstrating significant potential in healthcare and pharmaceutical education, yet its real-world applicability in clinical training warrants further investigation. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between April and May 2023 to assess PharmD students' perceptions, concerns, and experiences regarding the integration of ChatGPT into clinical pharmacy education. The study utilized a convenient sampling method through online platforms and involved a questionnaire with sections on demographics, perceived benefits, concerns, and experience with ChatGPT. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, including descriptive and inferential analyses. Results: The findings of the study involving 211 PharmD students revealed that the majority of participants were male (77.3%), and had prior experience with artificial intelligence (68.2%). Over two-thirds were aware of ChatGPT. Most students (n= 139, 65.9%) perceived potential benefits in using ChatGPT for various clinical tasks, with concerns including over-reliance, accuracy, and ethical considerations. Adoption of ChatGPT in clinical training varied, with some students not using it at all, while others utilized it for tasks like evaluating drug-drug interactions and developing care plans. Previous users tended to have higher perceived benefits and lower concerns, but the differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Utilizing ChatGPT in clinical training offers opportunities, but students' lack of trust in it for clinical decisions highlights the need for collaborative human-ChatGPT decision-making. It should complement healthcare professionals' expertise and be used strategically to compensate for human limitations. Further research is essential to optimize ChatGPT's effective integration.
ChatGPT as a Tool for Medical Education and Clinical Decision-Making on the Wards: Case Study

Abstract:Background: Large language models (LLMs) are computational artificial intelligence systems with advanced natural language processing capabilities that have recently been popularized among health care students and educators due to their ability to provide real-time access to a vast amount of medical knowledge. The adoption of LLM technology into medical education and training has varied, and little empirical evidence exists to support its use in clinical teaching environments. Objective: The aim of the study is to identify and qualitatively evaluate potential use cases and limitations of LLM technology for real-time ward-based educational contexts. Methods: A brief, single-site exploratory evaluation of the publicly available ChatGPT-3.5 (OpenAI) was conducted by implementing the tool into the daily attending rounds of a general internal medicine inpatient service at a large urban academic medical center. ChatGPT was integrated into rounds via both structured and organic use, using the web-based "chatbot" style interface to interact with the LLM through conversational free-text and discrete queries. A qualitative approach using phenomenological inquiry was used to identify key insights related to the use of ChatGPT through analysis of ChatGPT conversation logs and associated shorthand notes from the clinical sessions. Results: Identified use cases for ChatGPT integration included addressing medical knowledge gaps through discrete medical knowledge inquiries, building differential diagnoses and engaging dual-process thinking, challenging medical axioms, using cognitive aids to support acute care decision-making, and improving complex care management by facilitating conversations with subspecialties. Potential additional uses included engaging in difficult conversations with patients, exploring ethical challenges and general medical ethics teaching, personal continuing medical education resources, developing ward-based teaching tools, supporting and automating clinical documentation, and supporting productivity and task management. LLM biases, misinformation, ethics, and health equity were identified as areas of concern and potential limitations to clinical and training use. A code of conduct on ethical and appropriate use was also developed to guide team usage on the wards. Conclusions: Overall, ChatGPT offers a novel tool to enhance ward-based learning through rapid information querying, second-order content exploration, and engaged team discussion regarding generated responses. More research is needed to fully understand contexts for educational use, particularly regarding the risks and limitations of the tool in clinical settings and its impacts on trainee development.

Abstract:Background: Patient education plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for patients with heart failure. As artificial intelligence continues to advance, new chatbots are emerging as valuable tools across various aspects of life. One prominent example is ChatGPT, a widely used chatbot among the public. Our study aims to evaluate the readability of ChatGPT answers for common patients' questions about heart failure. Methods: We performed a comparative analysis between ChatGPT responses and existing heart failure educational materials from top US cardiology institutes. Validated readability calculators were employed to assess and compare the reading difficulty and grade level of the materials. Furthermore, blind assessment using The Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT) was done by four advanced heart failure attendings to evaluate the readability and actionability of each resource. Results: Our study revealed that responses generated by ChatGPT were longer and more challenging to read compared to other materials. Additionally, these responses were written at a higher educational level (undergraduate and 9-10th grade), similar to those from the Heart Failure Society of America. Despite achieving a competitive PEMAT readability score (75 %), surpassing the American Heart Association score (68 %), ChatGPT's actionability score was the lowest (66.7 %) among all materials included in our study. Conclusion: Despite its current limitations, artificial intelligence chatbots has the potential to revolutionize the field of patient education especially given theirs ongoing improvements. However, further research is necessary to ensure the integrity and reliability of these chatbots before endorsing them as reliable resources for patient education.

Medical educators are increasingly asked to perform more administrative, written, and assessment functions with less time and resources. Safe use of chatbots, like ChatGPT, can help medical educators efficiently perform these functions. In this article, we provide medical educators with tips for the implementation of ChatGPT in medical education. Through creativity and careful construction of prompts, medical educators can use these and other implementations of chatbots, like ChatGPT, in their practice.

Abstract:Background: ChatGPT, a powerful AI language model, has gained increasing prominence in medicine, offering potential applications in healthcare, clinical decision support, patient communication, and medical research. This systematic review aims to comprehensively assess the applications of ChatGPT in healthcare education, research, writing, patient communication, and practice while also delineating potential limitations and areas for improvement. Method: Our comprehensive database search retrieved relevant papers from PubMed, Medline and Scopus. After the screening process, 83 studies met the inclusion criteria. This review includes original studies comprising case reports, analytical studies, and editorials with original findings. Result: ChatGPT is useful for scientific research and academic writing, and assists with grammar, clarity, and coherence. This helps non-English speakers and improves accessibility by breaking down linguistic barriers. However, its limitations include probable inaccuracy and ethical issues, such as bias and plagiarism. ChatGPT streamlines workflows and offers diagnostic and educational potential in healthcare but exhibits biases and lacks emotional sensitivity. It is useful in inpatient communication, but requires up-to-date data and faces concerns about the accuracy of information and hallucinatory responses. Conclusion: Given the potential for ChatGPT to transform healthcare education, research, and practice, it is essential to approach its adoption in these areas with caution due to its inherent limitations.

Abstract:ChatGPT is an AI tool that can be used to enhance medical education by helping students develop subjective learning and expression skills. These skills are critical in clinical practice, but the current medical education system is heavily focused on objective assessments, such as Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). Students from non-English speaking backgrounds can particularly struggle with expressing themselves in English, which is the primary language of instruction in many medical schools worldwide. ChatGPT can provide additional language support for these students to help them develop their language skills and communicate effectively. ChatGPT can be used in small group assessments to serve as a benchmark for students to strive for in their medical education. By comparing their answers to ChatGPT's responses, students can identify gaps in their knowledge and work to fill them. ChatGPT can also provide students with feedback on their writing style and language usage, helping them to improve their subjective expression of medical knowledge. Furthermore, ChatGPT can be used to simulate patient encounters for medical students. By interacting with ChatGPT, students can practice taking medical histories and documenting symptoms accurately. In continuing medical education (CME) programs, physicians can also benefit from ChatGPT's capabilities. By using ChatGPT to search for the latest research articles, clinical trials, and treatment guidelines, physicians can stay informed and provide the best care possible to their patients. Abstract:ChatGPT is a virtual assistant with artificial intelligence (AI) that uses natural language to communicate, i.e., it holds conversations as those that would take place with another human being. It can be applied at all educational levels, including medical education, where it can impact medical training, research, the writing of scientific articles, clinical care, and personalized medicine. It can modify interactions between physicians and patients and thus improve the standards of healthcare quality and safety, for example, by suggesting preventive measures in a patient that sometimes are not considered by the physician for multiple reasons. ChatGPT potential uses in medical education, as a tool to support the writing of scientific articles, as a medical care assistant for patients and doctors for a more personalized medical approach, are some of the applications discussed in this article. Ethical aspects, originality, inappropriate or incorrect content, incorrect citations, cybersecurity, hallucinations, and plagiarism are some examples of situations to be considered when using AI-based tools in medicine.

Abstract:Background ChatGPT is a well-known large language model–based chatbot. It could be used in the medical field in many aspects. However, some physicians are still unfamiliar with ChatGPT and are concerned about its benefits and risks. Objective We aim to evaluate the perception of physicians and medical students toward using ChatGPT in the medical field. Methods A web-based questionnaire was sent to medical students, interns, residents, and attending staff with questions regarding their perception toward using ChatGPT in clinical practice and medical education. Participants were also asked to rate their perception of ChatGPT’s generated response about knee osteoarthritis. Results Participants included 124 medical students, 46 interns, 37 residents, and 32 attending staff. After reading ChatGPT’s response, 132 of the 239 (55.2%) participants had a positive rating about using ChatGPT for clinical practice. The proportion of positive answers was significantly lower in graduated physicians (48/115, 42%) compared with medical students (84/124, 68%; P<.001). Participants listed a lack of a patient-specific treatment plan, updated evidence, and a language barrier as ChatGPT’s pitfalls. Regarding using ChatGPT for medical education, the proportion of positive responses was also significantly lower in graduate physicians (71/115, 62%) compared to medical students (103/124, 83.1%; P<.001). Participants were concerned that ChatGPT’s response was too superficial, might lack scientific evidence, and might need expert verification. Conclusions Medical students generally had a positive perception of using ChatGPT for guiding treatment and medical education, whereas graduated doctors were more cautious in this regard. Nonetheless, both medical students and graduated doctors positively perceived using ChatGPT for creating patient educational materials.

Abstract:Science fiction literature and films no longer focus on artificial intelligence. In contrast to all other aspects of life, medical education and clinical patient care have been progressing slowly. Recently, a lot of text from the internet was used to construct and train chatbots, especially ChatGPT. The language model ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, has emerged as a useful resource for medical research and education. It has proven to be a useful tool for researchers, students, and medical professionals because of its capacity to produce human-like answers to challenging medical queries. However, using ChatGPT also has significant drawbacks. The possibility of erroneous or biased information being spread, which could have negative effects on patient care, is one of the key worries. Moreover, the overreliance on technology in medical education could also lead to a decline in critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills. Overall, ChatGPT has the potential to be a boon to medical education and research, but its use must be accompanied by caution and critical evaluation.
An explorative assessment of ChatGPT as an aid in medical education: Use it with caution

Abstract:Objective: To explore the use of ChatGPT by educators and students in a medical school setting. Method: This study used the public version of ChatGPT launched by OpenAI on November 30, 2022 (https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/). We employed prompts to ask ChatGPT to 1) generate a content outline for a session on the topics of cholesterol, lipoproteins, and hyperlipidemia for medical students; 2) produce a list of learning objectives for the session; and 3) write assessment questions with and without clinical vignettes related to the identified learning objectives. We assessed the responses by ChatGPT for accuracy and reliability to determine the potential of the chatbot as an aid to educators and as a "know-it-all" medical information provider for students. Results: ChatGPT can function as an aid to educators, but it is not yet suitable as a reliable information resource for educators and medical students. Conclusion: ChatGPT can be a useful tool to assist medical educators in drafting course and session content outlines and create assessment questions. At the same time, caution must be taken as ChatGPT is prone to providing incorrect information; expert oversight and caution are necessary to ensure the information generated is accurate and beneficial to students. Therefore, it is premature for medical students to use the current version of ChatGPT as a "know-it-all" information provider. In the future, medical educators should work with programming experts to explore and grow the full potential of AI in medical education.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed our interactions with the world, spawning complex apps and gadgets known as intelligent agents. ChatGPT, a chatbot hybrid of AI and human-computer interaction, converse with humans and have a wide range of possible uses. Chatbots have showed potential in the field of medical education and health sciences by aiding learning, offering feedback, and increasing metacognitive thinking among undergraduate and postgraduate students. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, an dvanced language model, has substantially enhanced chatbot capabilities. Chatbots are being used in the medical related field for teaching & learning, mental state categorisation, medication recommendation, health education and awareness. While chatbots have been well accepted by users, further study is needed to fully grasp their use in medical and healthcare settings. This study looked at 32 research on ChatGPT and chatbots in medical-related fields and medical education. Medical education, anatomy, vaccines, internal medicine, psychiatry, dentistry, nursing, and psychology were among the topics discussed in the articles. The study designs ranged from pilot studies to controlled experimental trials. The findings show the exponential growth and potential of ChatGPT and chatbots in healthcare and medical education, as well as the necessity for more research and development in this sector.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence, specifically advanced language models such as ChatGPT, have the potential to revolutionize various aspects of healthcare, medical education, and research. In this narrative review, we evaluate the myriad applications of ChatGPT in diverse healthcare domains. We discuss its potential role in clinical decision-making, exploring how it can assist physicians by providing rapid, data-driven insights for diagnosis and treatment. We review the benefits of ChatGPT in personalized patient care, particularly in geriatric care, medication management, weight loss and nutrition, and physical activity guidance. We further delve into its potential to enhance medical research, through the analysis of large datasets, and the development of novel methodologies. In the realm of medical education, we investigate the utility of ChatGPT as an information retrieval tool and personalized learning resource for medical students and professionals. There are numerous promising applications of ChatGPT that will likely induce paradigm shifts in healthcare practice, education, and research. The use of ChatGPT may come with several benefits in areas such as clinical decision making, geriatric care, medication management, weight loss and nutrition, physical fitness, scientific research, and medical education. Nevertheless, it is important to note that issues surrounding ethics, data privacy, transparency, inaccuracy, and inadequacy persist. Prior to widespread use in medicine, it is imperative to objectively evaluate the impact of ChatGPT in a real-world setting using a risk-based approach.

Abstract:Sialidases catalyse the hydrolysis of terminal sialic acid of the carbohydrate moiety of glycoconjugates. Sialic acids play a key role in the expression or masking of antigenic sites and in cell-cell interactions. As an example, removal of sialic acid from the human erythrocyte membrane unmasks underlying molecules such as the specific carbohydrates (Gal-GalNac) of the so-called T or Thomsen-Friedenreich cryptic antigen. A consequence of this, is the recognition of that antigen by natural serum antibodies. Since the T antigen has been shown to be present in the lung, we have investigated the possible presence of sialidase and of specific antibodies to sialidase-treated cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF) from patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). By using a fluorogenic substrate (4-methyl umbelliferyl-alpha-D-N-acetyl sodium neuraminate), we were able to detect a sialidase activity in BALF from eight out of nine patients with IPF and from ten out of thirty-five patients with sarcoidosis. BALF from normal volunteers and serum from both patients and normal volunteers were devoid of activity. BALF sialidase has an optimum pH activity of 5.4, it is not inhibited by EDTA and has a molecular weight close to 21 kD. BALF anti-T antibodies (galactose specific) were detectable in minute amounts in only one out of the nine normal volunteers. By contrast, they were frequently present in BALF from sarcoidosis (77%) or IPF (66%) patients and sarcoidosis patients had a higher mean activity. No correlation was observed between the enzymatic and antibody activities.

Abstract:Background: The transition to clinical clerkships can be difficult for medical students, as it requires the synthesis and application of preclinical information into diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. ChatGPT—a generative language model with many medical applications due to its creativity, memory, and accuracy—can help students in this transition. Objective: This paper models ChatGPT 3.5's ability to perform interactive clinical simulations and shows this tool's benefit to medical education. Methods: Simulation starting prompts were refined using ChatGPT 3.5 in Google Chrome. Starting prompts were selected based on assessment format, stepwise progression of simulation events and questions, free-response question type, responsiveness to user inputs, postscenario feedback, and medical accuracy of the feedback. The chosen scenarios were advanced cardiac life support and medical intensive care (for sepsis and pneumonia). Results: Two starting prompts were chosen. Prompt 1 was developed through 3 test simulations and used successfully in 2 simulations. Prompt 2 was developed through 10 additional test simulations and used successfully in 1 simulation. Conclusions: ChatGPT is capable of creating simulations for early clinical education. These simulations let students practice novel parts of the clinical curriculum, such as forming independent diagnostic and therapeutic impressions over an entire patient encounter. Furthermore, the simulations can adapt to user inputs in a way that replicates real life more accurately than premade question bank clinical vignettes. Finally, ChatGPT can create potentially unlimited free simulations with specific feedback, which increases access for medical students with lower socioeconomic status and underresourced medical schools. However, no tool is perfect, and ChatGPT is no exception; there are concerns about simulation accuracy and replicability that need to be addressed to further optimize ChatGPT's performance as an educational resource.

Abstract:ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based conversational large language model (LLM). The potential applications of LLMs in health care education, research, and practice could be promising if the associated valid concerns are proactively examined and addressed. The current systematic review aimed to investigate the utility of ChatGPT in health care education, research, and practice and to highlight its potential limitations. Using the PRIMSA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted to retrieve English records in PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar (published research or preprints) that examined ChatGPT in the context of health care education, research, or practice. A total of 60 records were eligible for inclusion. Benefits of ChatGPT were cited in 51/60 (85.0%) records and included: (1) improved scientific writing and enhancing research equity and versatility; (2) utility in health care research (efficient analysis of datasets, code generation, literature reviews, saving time to focus on experimental design, and drug discovery and development); (3) benefits in health care practice (streamlining the workflow, cost saving, documentation, personalized medicine, and improved health literacy); and (4) benefits in health care education including improved personalized learning and the focus on critical thinking and problem-based learning. Concerns regarding ChatGPT use were stated in 58/60 (96.7%) records including ethical, copyright, transparency, and legal issues, the risk of bias, plagiarism, lack of originality, inaccurate content with risk of hallucination, limited knowledge, incorrect citations, cybersecurity issues, and risk of infodemics. The promising applications of ChatGPT can induce paradigm shifts in health care education, research, and practice. However, the embrace of this AI chatbot should be conducted with extreme caution considering its potential limitations. As it currently stands, ChatGPT does not qualify to be listed as an author in scientific articles unless the ICMJE/COPE guidelines are revised or amended. An initiative involving all stakeholders in health care education, research, and practice is urgently needed. This will help to set a code of ethics to guide the responsible use of ChatGPT among other LLMs in health care and academia.

Abstract:In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the fields of medicine and public health grapple with numerous challenges that continue to hinder patients' access to healthcare services. ChatGPT, a publicly accessible chatbot, has emerged as a potential tool in aiding public health efforts in LMICs. This viewpoint details the potential benefits of employing ChatGPT in LMICs to improve medicine and public health encompassing a broad spectrum of domains ranging from health literacy, screening, triaging, remote healthcare support, mental health support, multilingual capabilities, healthcare communication and documentation, medical training and education, and support for healthcare professionals. Additionally, we also share potential concerns and limitations associated with the use of ChatGPT and provide a balanced discussion on the opportunities and challenges of using ChatGPT in LMICs.

Abstract:The primary objectives of medical safety education are to provide the public with essential knowledge about medications and to foster a scientific approach to drug usage. The era of using artificial intelligence to revolutionize medical safety education has already dawned, and ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence models have immense potential in this domain. Notably, they offer a wealth of knowledge, anonymity, continuous availability, and personalized services. However, the practical implementation of generative artificial intelligence models such as ChatGPT in medical safety education still faces several challenges, including concerns about the accuracy of information, legal responsibilities, and ethical obligations. Moving forward, it is crucial to intelligently upgrade ChatGPT by leveraging the strengths of existing medical practices. This task involves further integrating the model with real-life scenarios and proactively addressing ethical and security issues with the ultimate goal of providing the public with comprehensive, convenient, efficient, and personalized medical services.
