Abstract:This paper elaborates the development of spatial structure in our country.Because the forms and types are colorful and incessantly innovating,it is necessary to divide spatial structure by component elements.After the 21th century,the development of our nation’s spatial structure comes into a new period that the application range and fields for spatial structure extend continuously.Besides the large-span public buildings such as gymnasiums and airports,there are extensive and innovative applications including large-scale railway stations,stations awning without column,bridges and high-rise buildings for spatial structure.About the international cooperation,it is suggested to have an open mind and optimistic view towards the fact that that architecture scheme for our nation’s spatial structures are frequently led by foreign companies.China is already a country with a great deal of the top of the world spatial structures,thus it is our responsibility to strive to create even better and advanced spatial structures.Some issues which we should pay more attention are pointed out.

Abstract:The biomedical industry is developing at an unprecedented speed and the establishment and improvement of a digital infrastructure for biomedical research and development (R&D) is crucial for biotechnology innovation and Health China construction. This study analyzes the implication, classification, and systematic framework of the digital infrastructure for biomedical R&D in the new era. It summarizes the strategic layouts and development paths of the digital infrastructures for biomedical R&D in the United States, the European Union, and China, and examines the gap between China and European and American countries in terms of international influence and authority, development model design and efficiency, sustainability, and management organization construction. Moreover, it presents the challenges faced by the digital infrastructure of China regarding top-level design, management, and governance. Furthermore, we suggest that the following aspects should be strengthened: top-level framework design, coordination of biomedical and healthcare resources, clustered construction and governance of the platform, and capacity building and operationguarantee of the open platform.

Abstract:Research infrastructures are large facilities primarily aimed at basic or fundamental research, built and made available to a wider community of researchers, and characterized by an Open Access policy based on the free competition among proposals/experiments that are ranked only by looking at their scientific content at an international level. These facilities have the extraordinary capability not only to stimulate and support the research of the host country, for which they have been funded and built, but may attract dozens of researchers from abroad, generating wealth in the territory where they are located. What is the situation in China, what research infrastructures are operating and how many of those under construction will be available in the coming years? Since development of science and technology as well as innovation and management system are strategic components to drive changes in a country, understanding the status and the impact of large research facilities is fundamental to estimate how China will grow toward the frontiers of science and innovation, and what will be the role of this country in many key disciplines at mid‐century. Research infrastructures increase the prestige of a nation and its technology capabilities. Moreover, in the case of China, they even represent one of the key issues to understand the extraordinary growth of this country.

Abstract:Large research infrastructures (RIs) are expected to play an important role in the development of scientific activities in China and the construction of China's national scientific systems. However, few studies have been devoted to the systematic evaluation of the scientific effects of China's RIs. This paper attempts to fill this gap by designing a comprehensive analytical framework composed of the input-side, output-side, process-side and environment-side effects of RIs on scientific activities. The analysis is implemented based on a novel sample composed of nine of China's typical RIs. More specifically, this paper classified these nine Chinese RIs into the following three types according to their functions: dedicated research infrastructure, public experimental platform and public infrastructure. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the features of the scientific effects of these RIs in terms of the following four typical scientific effects: science and technology advancement effect, capability cultivation effect, networking effect and clustering effect. In addition to the finding that RIs have promoted scientific advancements in many disciplines in China, the study found that RIs are important to the acquisition of new knowledge, and also contribute to the propagation of competitive scientific organizations and scientific talent. Networking and clustering impacts are also important scientific effects of RIs, as they increase the effectiveness of scientific activities in China. This paper not only contributes to developing an analytical framework for evaluating the functions and effects of large RIs but also presents evidence regarding the development of large RIs in emerging countries.

Abstract:The accelerating pace of technological advancements necessitates specialised expertise and cutting‐edge instruments to maintain competitive research in life sciences. Core facilities – collaborative laboratories equipped with state‐of‐the‐art tools and staffed by expert personnel – are vital resources that support diverse scientific endeavours. However, their adoption in lower‐income communities has been comparatively stagnant due to both financial and cultural challenges. This paper explores the perils of not supporting core facilities on national research enterprises, underscoring the need for balanced investments in discovery science and crucial infrastructure support. We explore the implications from the perspectives of funders, university leaders and lab heads. We advocate for a paradigm shift to recognise these facilities as essential components of national research efforts. Core facilities are positioned not as optional but as strategic investments that can catalyse breakthroughs, particularly in environments with limited resources.

Abstract:In recent years, with the continuous development of urbanization in China, construction equipment and technology in the field of building are developing rapidly. China has made much progress in this field, but there is also a gap in comparison. Rapid growth needs to follow the appropriate direction of development. In the future, China will further accelerate the speed of urban intensive construction, so it is of great significance to find a correct direction for the development of Chinese cities. Based on this purpose, this paper summarizes the current situation and rules of building equipment and technology in the view of the rapid development of modern architecture and related practical achievements. This article further analyses the building technology and equipment from the aspects of social culture, political economy, laws and regulations, and discipline development. The conclusion is that in the future development of buildings, the energy saving of construction equipment and technology will become an important symbol of construction technology progress. Finally, this paper puts forward the problems existing in the development of construction equipment and technology in China and the ways to solve these problems.

Abstract:Objective:To analyze the current situation of allocation and utilization of major medical equipment in China and make policy recommendations.Methods:Literature review and field survey methods were used to achieve the purpose.Results:The utilization of major medical equipment in the inpatients was higher than that in the outpatients.The service amount of CT was the biggest and service amount of major medical equipment decreased from east to west.Utilization efficiency varied among sample provinces(city),and positive detection rate was generally high.Excessive use and under use coexisted.Macro distribution and utilization management need to be improved.Conclusion:The macro-governance policy on major medical equipment should be optimized during the new health system reform.Some mechanisms for major medical equipment should be developed and improved,including distribution,investment,monitoring and evaluation.

Abstract:According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the basic sciences to support the human health are chemistry, physics and informatics. Chemistry is the base of pharmacy. Physics is the base of medical instruments and equipments (MIE). The diagnosis and therapy of diseases are relying on informatics. Therefore, as the fusion results of physics and medicine, medical physics is the creative source science of MIE. Among all diagnosis tools, medical imaging devices are the fastest-developed and the most-complicated MIE since Roentgen discovered X-ray which was quickly used in medical diagnosis in 1895. Among all treatment tools, the radiotherapeutical devices are the most-widely used and the most effective MIE for tumor treatments since Mrs. Courier found the nature radiation isotope Radium at the end of 19th century and began to use it in tumor therapy. Although the research and development (R&D) of so-complicated MIE need many subjects of science and engineering, the kernel science is medical physics. With the results of more than 50 years' development in developed countries, medical physics has defined its own field, which is the medical imaging physics and the radiotherapeutical physics. But, the definition has been expanded to be wider and wider. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the establishment of Medical Physics in China. In order to develop medical physics in china, the bases of R&D and clinical practice should be also built.

Abstract:Science Progress, Volume 107, Issue 4, October-December 2024. This article reviews 'large-scale research infrastructures' work and other relevant literature from the science policy and management domains. Through a systematic literature review, the study identifies that there are no firm inclusion or exclusion criteria for a large-scale research infrastructure. The findings identify the need for filling this knowledge gap to support future analyses for large-scale research infrastructures to help scientists and science policymakers understand, plan, and evaluate their own work. A refined version of one of the concepts examined in this article, the 'large international science project', provides the most fruitful starting point.

Abstract:The open sharing of core facilities is an important and unavoidable question that university must give answer .Many universities paid great efforts to investigate this subject , and a large number of practical methods were pointed out .This paper systematically summarizes the core facilities construction methods and mechanism in Tsinghua University ,and puts forward a series of conceptions ,for example ,the university management departments should collect the common demand all over the university ,do the top‐level design , and control the construction process .This paper insists that the core facilities should provide services with reasonable fees ,to keep sustainable operation and management .Information technology should be used deeply along with the services , to enhance service ability , and to improve the service efficiency . At last , the technician is a key factor in core facilities operation .All above concepts and methods were applied in Tsinghua University ,and some good results have been received .It will be sharing with other universities .

Furthermore, it outlines targeted and strategic improvement measures aimed at addressing these issues directly. By offering a detailed assessment of the current situation and practical solutions, we aim to empower relevant personnel with the knowledge and insights necessary to enhance laboratory safety management, reduce the risk of accidents, and foster a safe, secure, and efficient research environment.

Abstract:Abstract High-quality biodiversity data are the scientific basis for understanding the origin, sustainable utility of biodiversity and dealing with its extinction risk. Gathering big data of biodiversity and mining novel discoveries cross disciplines will lead to the change of the way how life system should be understood, and how biodiversity resources should be utilized sustainably. Therefore, to establish an infrastructure for the big biodiversity data in China is urgently needed. This infrastructure (BioONE) incorporates big biodiversity data from both macro and micro scales, and integrate data service and data mining system. It incorporates BioDatasets, BioMapping, Biotools, BioSevices and BioKnowledge systems. The BioDatasets integrated palaeontology, genomics, traits, taxonomy and habitats. The BioMapping data that come from geography, climatology, remote sensing, environmental science and economy are also included as a comprehensive rasterized dataset being available to the public. It could provide standardized visualization services to our governments to promote the conservation of biodiversity resources and ecological safety. These services will also contribute greatly to exploring the frontiers in the advancement of the biodiversity scientific discoveries and innovations, providing fundamental data products for fulfilling the international biodiversity obligations, the biodiversity monitoring, prevention and control of infectious disease, and ensuring the ecological security and the sustainable development of economy.

Abstract:Energy is crucial to the development of human civilization. Energy infrastructure, such as oil and gas pipelines, power generation systems, and storage facilities, provide core support for the exploitation and utilization of various types of energy. Thus, energy infrastructure is vital to the economic sustainable development of a country. This paper provides the motivations and a brief introduction to the Special Issue entitled "Frontiers in Construction Technology of Advanced Energy Infrastructure", which aims to present advanced technologies and theories for energy infrastructure. The primary challenges in the current construction technology of energy infrastructure are described. Furthermore, the focus of current research in this field addressed in this Special Issue is presented. A comparison of the articles included or considered for inclusion in this Special Issue with other available literature on this topic is performed, which proves the prospects and relevance of this Special Issue. Finally, perspectives on future directions of energy utilization and energy infrastructure construction are provided.

Abstract:Large-scale research infrastructures (LSRIs) are widely acknowledged as a crucial instrument for venturing into the uncharted territories of science and technology, as well as contributing to the well-being of society. However, only a limited number of literature have scrutinized the impact of LSRIs, founded upon a causal inference framework. Moreover, the function of LSRIs in the advancement of innovation at the regional level remains inadequately identified. Drawing on the resource-based view, this study develops a conceptual framework that links the scientific effect of LSRIs to innovation resources in order to assess their impact on knowledge innovation (KI). Taking China's National Supercomputing Center (NSC) as a case, three major mechanism hypotheses are proposed for the impact of NSC on KI, including basic effect, network effect, and technology effect. Using panel data from 283 cities in China from 2000 to 2020, we employ a spatial difference-in-differences estimation model to examine the impact of NSC on KI. The research finds that: (1) The construction of NSC stimulates KI in local and surrounding areas. (2) The main mechanisms by which NSC promotes KI include the increase in fiscal investment and talents in science, the improvement of digital infrastructure, as well as the enhancement of urban network centrality and innovation efficiency. (3) Geographical proximity, cooperation proximity, and digitization proximity constitute the main channels of policy spillover. (4) NSC has not shown significant promotion of regional innovation convergence, and its radiation influence needs further improvement. (5) The knowledge innovation effects of NSCs manifest heterogeneity based on the distinct knowledge orientation and innovation environment, with this impact being notably pronounced in application innovation-oriented cities such as Shenzhen. The results of this study reveal the positive yet limited impact of NSC on KI and provide a reference for other economies in the areas of LSRIs, digital infrastructure, and the formulation of place-based innovation policy.
